Beefed up defense Legacy brings dominating, shrewd presence to Grizzlies By FRITZ NEIGHBOR of the Missoulian

To Montana Grizzlies coach Bobby Hauck, Shawn Lebsock is, “as good a player as we’ve had at linebacker in many, many years.” To opponents, Lebsock is a sturdy gapfiller who is liable to bring a big hit. To his teammates, the Grizzlies’ leading tackler heading into Saturday’s homecoming game against Cal Poly is simply: “Beef.” “I liked to eat,” says the 225-pound senior linebacker, who still isn’t enamored with his nickname. “The joke was something to do with the ‘Where’s the Beef?’ ads. I refused to let anyone call me that from the time I was about 5 years old, but then dad brought it back.” Dad is Ron Lebsock, the former Griz center who has seen three of his five sons suit up for Montana. And he doesn’t remember the origin of his middle son’s nickname quite the same way. “He got that back when he used to ask, ‘What’s for lunch?’ at breakfast,” he said. “Shawn was always eating. He’s always had the barrel chest and the big legs.” So it was almost a given that when Shawn Lebsock got to the UM campus in the summer of 2005, the handle had preceded him. “I got up here and the first day, nobody called me by my first name,” he said. “I didn’t have a choice or a chance.” “Oh, well,” he added. “There could be worse things.” Lebsock has 28 tackles for the 4-0 Grizzlies, including a sack. He was the second-leading tackler a year ago, when Montana went 14-2 and made the Division I Football Championship, losing 24-7 to Richmond. That’s impressive. What’s more impressive is his 3.46 grade-point average in biology. He has a plan, which isn’t surprising if you look at his family. Nick, younger by a year, was playing fullback at UM before hanging up his cleats this fall because of a knee injury. He’s also

Matt, a safety at Montana from 2003-06, is a second-year law student at UM. Then there’s Chris, the oldest. He didn’t get much of a look from the Griz, so he set his sights on Concordia, a Division III school in Moorhead, Minn. “He had a plan,” Ron Lebsock said.

“Concordia placed 87 percent of their premed students in med school. And so he got placed at the University of Washington.” And after med school, Chris promptly headed for the St. John Vianney Seminary in Denver, where he’s studying to join the priesthood. It didn’t surprise his family one bit that he had an even bigger plan. “We always had a feeling that Chris

would go that direction,” Ron says. “He is gifted. “I think he enjoyed medicine. He still enjoys it. But if you have that calling, you pursue it. We’re just very proud of him and everything he’s done.” The Lebsocks are obviously a spiritual See LEBSOCk, Page G22

Tim Anderson

Local gridder earns place on special teams By SCOTT JOHNSON for the Missoulian

Montana senior Tim Anderson has a keen eye for football movies. The fact that he lacks a starring role in Grizzly film sessions doesn’t seem to faze the Missoula native at all. “I’m excited to be out there any time I can be,” said Anderson, a backup safety who primarily contributes as a standout on special teams. “You can’t take any plays for granted.” Anderson was a multi-sport star at Loyola Sacred Heart before walking on with the Grizzlies in 2005. He has four tackles on the season. Anderson, the youngest of seven children, comes from an athletic family. He followed his brothers Andy, Eric, Michael and Isaac in football, basketball and track while his sisters Jennifer and Natalie played basketball and softball. Anderson said it was definitely a positive growing up in a large family. “We’re all really close in age,” he said. “When we played roller hockey my brothers would pair off and make me goalie.” Q: What’s it like to play college football in your hometown? A: Well, it’s been great. You watch the games on Saturdays, you watch the program grow, you get to play in front of your friends and family. Q: Did you go to Griz games

when you were a kid? A: I went whenever tickets were available. I went to more games than I missed. I have four brothers and two sisters, so it was always a scramble to see who got the tickets for the week. Q: Which do you prefer: helping set up a punt return or kickoff coverage? A: I like both equally. They’re two completely different things, but both are similar, too. It’s just a lot fun to fly around to try to make plays for the teams. Q: You blocked a punt against Northern Arizona last year in the first quarter of Montana’s 45-10 victory. What happened on that play? A: It was something Coach (Bobby) Hauck dialed up for that week. It was a stunt off the edge. I came free and got my hand on the ball. Q: Do you wish the coaches would allow you to try to block a punt every time you’re out there? A: I’d like to get after it every week. Sometimes, though, the best thing for that week is me holding up a guy to help set up the return. But it’s also really exciting to do something like that. Q: What can you tell me about Cal Poly? A: They’re a good matchup. We know we’ve got a good team coming here. We’ve been putting a lot of time in on film. We’ve got to give our best effort for a win.

Q: You’ve grown up in Missoula and witnessed the Grizzlies’ ascent as a perennial football power. Before you joined the team, did you have any preconceived notions about the life of a Grizzly football player that were either confirmed or proven false? A: That’s a hard question. You learn from coaches in high school that it was going to be a big commitment. You definitely learn when you’re going through it how much commitment it will take. It helps everybody learn responsibility. It’s definitely helpful. Q: You had a lot of success in high school, but weren’t offered a scholarship by Montana during the recruiting period. Were you considering any other options to play football? A: I tried to analyze what would be the best fit for me academically. I knew Missoula would be the best for me. The professors have been great. I definitely took the time to make a choice. I was confident when I made it. Q: Have you received any scholarship funds during your time with the Grizzlies? A: At the end of my third season I earned a scholarship. Q: You walked on with the Grizzlies in 2005. Did anyone ever call you Rudy, like the Sean Austin character in the movie about the kid that defies the odds to play for Notre Dame? A: No. I was never called Rudy.

I just kept quiet and did the work. Everybody on the team just treats you like you’re a part of the team. It’s a good group of guys. Q: Speaking of movies, what’s your favorite football movie? A: I like the Mark Wahlberg one … “Invincible.” “Little Giants” is a classic. “Remember the Titans” is also like the epitome of a perfect football movie. Q: Although you wear your hair a bit differently, has anyone ever confused you with former Griz safety Colt Anderson? A: No, but people asked if we were cousins. We’re pretty certain we’re not related. Q: The name Anderson has long been associated with Loyola Sacred Heart. How many relatives have gone through the football program? A: I don’t know. Most of my uncles on my dad’s side did. They moved up from Butte. My dad and I think his three brothers went there. Q: Did your brothers try to give you pointers or advice about football since you’re the youngest? A: Not really. They were more into basketball. They were just supportive. Q: What do you like to do in your free time? A: I love guitar. I play every day. Q: Acoustic or electric? A: Both. But not bass guitar. I’ve gotta play acoustic to keep it down. Injuries are part of the game.” How does it feel from the other side? Not so good, of course. Getting an offensive player to admit he’s been hurt? Very tough to do.

“When you’re out there and everything’s flying around and the adrenaline’s flowing, it doesn’t even affect you,” insisted Collin Klein of Kansas State, who’s played both quarterback and receiver – two of the most vulnerable positions. “You just pop right back up and get going,” he added. “Otherwise, they’ve created two or three problems with one hit.” Both sides are playing mind games with each other. A defensive player is trying to intimidate, to make that other guy flinch the next time he runs a similar play or ventures into the same area of the field. The offensive player wants to show everyone the hit didn’t bother him, which is best demonstrated by getting up as quickly as possible. “You’re going to get hit. You’re going to get hit when you’re not looking,” Georgia quarterback Joe Cox said. “But it’s not like a shark attack, where you get bit and don’t go back in the water.” Tebow didn’t have the option of getting back in the water, not that day anyway. If you get there, you’ve got to win it.� This spring he’ll take on 10 credits. He spends Sundays studying and watching Ray Lewis and the Baltimore Ravens, if they’re on. He keeps a Lewis-like intensity in practice, plugging gaps and bringing ballcarriers to a sudden stop. Saturday he’ll see his family, including Chris, in town for homecoming against always-tough Cal Poly. “We’ve been a little inconsistent this year, in certain aspects,� says Lebsock, who anchors a defense that is No. 2 in the nation in rushing yards allowed. “All we can hope for is to continue to get better. “That’s what happened last year. After that Weber State game we took it upon ourselves to get better each week. I don’t

think it’ll take a Weber game like last year for us to get our act together.� Shawn’s Grizzlies – twice national champions with 16 straight playoff berths and 11 straight Big Sky Conference titles – are a far cry from those of Ron’s era. From 1974-77 the Griz won 17 games, though they were 6-4 in Jack Swarthout’s final season as coach. Home games at sparse, wooden Dornblaser Field have given way to packed houses at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. Ron Lebsock wouldn’t trade it for the world. He marvels at what UM football has become 32 years later – “It’s too bad we didn’t have that,� he says – but knows that for everything that has changed, the core values remain the same. “I’ll drive by Dornblaser and think about those days,� he said. “People fell through the stands, you know?
