WELCOME TO THE 39TH ANNUAL

INTERNATIONAL WILDLIFE FILM FESTIVAL Buttercups and bitterroot are blooming in the rockies. Bluebirds and robins have returned. It must be time again for another installment of the perennial International Wildlife Film Festival. This year’s 39th festival features over fifty groundbreaking and inspirational films from around the world – and a variety of special events that help propel our festival into new, creative frontiers. The Official Selections capture rich and captivating tales, and introduce us to a wild menagerie of critters whose remarkable lives provide insight into our planet’s expansive biodiversity, and the very nature of life itself. From exquisite “blue chip” wildlife films, to broader conservationthemed explorations of issues like poaching and pollution, these are the films that speak for the world around us. These stories of survival and adaptation, epic struggles and grave warnings, are an occasion to turn the course of events in favor of the 8 million other species inhabiting our planet, one story at a time. Undeniably, Climate Change is the most urgent issue of our time. This year’s festival is marked by a special focus on Climate Change. Several films and events throughout the seven days focus on the imminent changes we face if as a planet we don’t find a way to change course. One such film, the highly anticipated Sundance film festival hit by Academy Award ® nominated director Josh Fox (Gasland) How to Let Go of the World and Love All the Things Climate Can’t Change will feature a Q&A with Fox and Producer Deia Shlosberg. In addition, we will present a FREE presentation at the University of Montana by renown Marine Biologist and underwater filmmaker Rick Rosenthal entitled El Niño: An Ocean Mystery. The multi-media event will explore the impact of El Niño on ocean life and climate.

| iNTERNATIONAL wILDLIFE fILM FESTIVAL

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the National Parks Service, we are also presenting a special strand of films exploring Natural Parks – both in North America and beyond. (See special feature description on page 67.) Other spotlight programs include Taggart Siegel and Jon Betz’s compelling new film Seed: The Untold Story and Racing Extinction (the new documentary by Academy Award Winning Director Louie Psihoyos (The Cove). Plus new and engaging work from the world’s most talented wildlife filmmakers and challenging and inspiring environmental films from independent conservation and environmental filmmakers. The festival also includes other special events that will help us celebrate the beauty, resilience and adaptability of our world. We have a wealth of family friendly programs including WildWalk and WildFest, a live performance by The Salamanders, as well as daily children’s matinees all week at The Dennison Theater. We’ll celebrate our amazing planet with an Earth Day Party at The Wilma featuring Missoula’s own Whizpops! With dozens of opportunities for exploration, discussion, and insight, this year’s event will welcome filmmakers, industry executives, scientists, conservationists and enthusiasts from around the world to participate in screenings, Q&As, panel discussions and workshops, and other free events around town. Nurtured by the enthusiasm of Missoula’s local community – known for its progressive, engaged and environmentally conscious intelligentsia – this year’s festival brings a world of issues and ideas to our cozy little mountain town. Welcome to springtime in the Rockies. Enjoy, Mike Steinberg IWFF Festival Producer

About IWFF

The mission of the International Wildlife Film Festival is to promote awareness, knowledge and understanding of wildlife, habitat, people and nature through excellence in film, television and other media. IWFF began in 1977 at the University of Montana. We have produced an annual wildlife themed film festival each year since 1977 making us the first and longest running event of its kind. In 2002 we purchased the historic Roxy Theater to act as the anchor/home for the festival. While we present the annual event each year, and some occasional programming, the true potential for the venue was not realized until the summer of 2013 when we launched our year-round screening series and began extensive collaboration with the university, businesses and the community.

IN MEMORY OF COOPER BURCHENAL 1964-2015

We lost a great ally last year with the passing of Cooper Burchenal. As a long-time board member and IWFF/ Roxy supporter, Cooper was extremely instrumental in leading our organization. He began his term in 2011, and served as the acting secretary for three years. He sat on the strategic Planning Committee and helped the organization redefine its mission and vision. He was a major proponent of the expansion of the festival and the development of year-round programming at The Roxy. A lover of nature, film, art, music, and life,

Cooper had an extraordinary smile and the ability to light up a room with his wry sense of humor and his contagious laugh. His exquisite voice and his marvelous head of hair were but two of his many defining, endearing features. He was, by anyone’s account, simply the kindest man, willing to engage in a lengthy, heady attack on a difficult concept or plan, or just sit back and take in the wondrous nature of it all. We are honored to have worked and served with Cooper, and proud to carry his legacy forward. Happy Trails, Coop. iNTERNATIONAL wILDLIFE fILM FESTIVAL |

El Nino: An Ocean Mystery with Rick Rosenthal Free Admission International Wildlife Film Festival and the Office Presented by of the President of The University of Montana are pleased to welcome renowned Wildlife Cinematographer and Marine Biologist Rick Rosenthal for a special presentation entitled El Nino: An Ocean Mystery. The multi-media event will explore the impact of El Nino on ocean life and climate. Rosenthal will present images and film clips from his films and his extensive archive. Trained as a Wildlife Biologist, underwater camerawork played an essential part in his marine research. Aiming to share his observations with the wider world, Rick turned to filmmaking and television. He has since gone on to film some of most challenging wildlife subjects on our planet in over 35 films. Among them are three award-winning programs on the great whales: Riddle of the Right Whale, Humpback Whales and Sperm Whales Back From the Abyss shot for the British television network BBC. Rosenthal was Director of Film and Video for the Marviva Foundation, a privately funded, pro-active international marine conservation organization committed to the preservation of the ocean environments of Latin America. Rick produced Hot Tuna and Superfish: Bluefin Tuna with international production and distribution company Wild Logic. The films are narrated by the celebrated Sir David Attenborough, and are airing currently on television worldwide, with over 10 million people in Japan alone tuning in on a single evening. In the US, Superfish: Bluefin Tuna is airing on the National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo Wild. Rick recently completed The Dark Side Of The Ocean (screening at this year’s International Wildlife Film Festival), a one-hour film, in HD and 4K with Wild Logic.

Animal Homes

Ann Johnson Prum - 55 Minutes - 2015

April 19 – 4:30 pm

Animals, like humans, need a place they can call home to provide a safe and stable place to raise a family, whether it’s a bird nest, a bear den, a beaver lodge or spider web. This three-part series features a blend of animation and signature “architectural blueprints” that highlight engineering principles inside the structures and demonstrate just how animals around the globe build their remarkable homes. Ecologist Chris Morgan (Siberian Tiger Quest, Bears of the Last Frontier) serves as our guide to the materials, locations, neighborhoods, and aesthetics of these animal homes, as well as the intriguing behaviors and social interactions that take place in and around them. iNTERNATIONAL wILDLIFE fILM FESTIVAL |

Brazil – A Natural History - Ep. 1: Fragile Forest 50 Minutes - 2015

April 23 – 11:30 am

This enigmatic forest once stretched along the coast for thousands of kilometres. Now there is only 7% left. Yet it is still home for many remarkable animals. Muriqui are the largest monkeys in South America. These very rare, highly social creatures greet each other with hugs - the closer the friendship, the more intense the hugs. Great dusky swifts fly through the tumbling waters of the mighty Iguaçu Falls to build their nests on the slippery rock faces behind the curtains of water. Coatis are curious looking creatures with their long flexible noses and banded tails, making them quite comical. But appearances can be deceptive, and coatis are efficient hunters. They are also very social, living in allfemale gangs that are composed of sisters, mothers and aunts. The females support one another in their day-to-day lives, keeping a watch out for predators. Blue manakins are also social, but in a completely different way. In the depths of the forest, the males of these startlingly colourful birds work as a team to court a female. Like miniature circus performers they jump and bounce on a branch, one after the other, to excite their audience. Only the lead artist gets to carry out the last act.

Yet this extraordinary event happens every night, in every ocean. Now for the first time, Rick Rosenthal will capture it on camera. But to do so, he must risk the dangers and face the challenges of filming in the open ocean, in the dark. When he succeeds, Rick unlocks the secrets of a bizarre and alien world - a world driven by survival to remain forever in the oceans’ shadows. 30

Giraffe - Up High and Personal Herbert Ostwald - 50 Minutes - 2015

April 17 – 3:00 pm

Long legs, tall neck, wide eyes - giraffes are the beauties of the African savannah. But there is so much more to these gentle giants: their exceptional body, their distinctive behaviour, their secret social life. So far, giraffes have barely been more than decorative extras in wildlife films, towering over the savannah. Our production takes a fresh look at these tallest animals of all, revealing brand new details about the secret lives of this true African icon. We present giraffes in the savannah of Kenya, in the South African grassland as well as in the desert of Namibia. The visual style is very different to the usual approach: amazing camera perspectives, a fresh way of framing and stunning points of view, together with spectacular, never before seen material will add up to a comprehensive and entertaining portrait of Nature’s High Society. 34

The Sagebrush Sea

Marc Dantzker, Tom Swartwout - 53 Minutes - 2015

April 23 – 12:45 pm

One of the most overlooked ecosystems on the continent consists of a massive sea of sagebrush that stretches across 11 states in the American West. This spartan yet spectacular landscape supports more than 170 species of birds and mammals, including deer, eagles, hawks, prairie dogs, cranes, songbirds, badgers and rabbits. And among those that have adapted to survive here are birds found no place else – Greater SageGrouse. These grouse lead remarkable lives mostly hidden in the sage. But once each year, males emerge for days on end to strut and display as prospective mates for extraordinarily discriminating females, nearly all which mate with only one or two of them. Females must then raise their chicks on their own, with little food, water or shelter to sustain them, while plenty of predators wait for their smallest mistake. And today, they must also contend with wells and pipelines tapping the resources buried deep below. The sagebrush and the grouse carry on, but they’re losing ground. iNTERNATIONAL wILDLIFE fILM FESTIVAL |
