travis Wafstet & kari swanson Married October 3, 2015, at The Ranch Club in Missoula, Montana Photography by Jubilee Photography MT • Flowers by Monaco Flowers Event design by Kathy Cambridge, Plan4It Events, LLC • Catering by The Ranch Club Cake by Black Cat Bakery • Music by LA Audio Productions • Hair by Krista Kusan at Burton’s Bride's dress by David’s Bridal • Gifts by Montana Basket Bistro
How did you meet?
Travis and I met at River of Life in East Missoula the Saturday after Thanksgiving in 2012. What followed that evening was the most amazing first date imaginable, complete with fire truck rides, an ambulance ride, and a trip to the ER (don’t worry, it wasn’t my emergency). It was my first opportunity to experience Travis’ heart for others and all the ways he serves our community. It set the groundwork for a future of fun and service which we will continue together in our marriage.
How did you choose your wedding vendors?
We wanted to select vendors who were local to support the small businesses of Montana. Travis found our photographer when he selected her to capture his proposal at Glacier National Park. She took wonderful photos of our engagement so we knew she had to capture the wedding. PLAN4IT Events, LLC, assisted us with potential vendors where we didn’t already have vendors selected (flowers, invitations, hotel accommodations, etc.). The florist she helped us find was a local small business, Monaco Flowers, who assisted in designing the simple floral approach to bring together the whole rustic theme. The Ranch Club was a perfect rustic setting for us. We did some research on wedding venues but nothing compared to the Barn at the Ranch Club. It had so many beautiful features that we envisioned for our special day.
What would you do differently if you had the chance?
Honestly, nothing. It couldn’t have been more perfect. Most of our family and friends were able to make it, whether they lived here or in other states. We felt truly loved. We can’t imagine it any differently.
What was your biggest challenge as you were planning the wedding?
Travis and I were engaged in Glacier National Park in October, 2014. The year that followed between tested our spirits and threatened our future. Less 8
than six months after our engagement, Travis was diagnosed with Stage II Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Travis began chemotherapy treatments. All the while, he continued to work full time as a deputy sheriff and assistant fire chief while I worked hard to plan the special day and also worked full time. Our only hope through it all was that Travis would be well enough to make the occasion come October. With the help of our strong faith, our family and friends, and an amazing wedding planner, our special day went off without a hitch. Travis completed his chemotherapy on schedule and even had his hair back in time for the wedding. We couldn’t have done it without the hard work of our wedding planner, Kathy Cambridge. Travis remains cancer free. Our experiences, although difficult, strengthened our love for each other and built a strong foundation for the many wonderful years of marriage ahead of us. We hope to use the strength and love that we have to embark on many more adventures together as husband and wife.
from the mother of the bride:
As the snow is beginning to fall here in Minnesota we reflect back to our wonderful experience in Missoula as we celebrated our daughter and sonin-law's wedding. Hospitable would be one word to describe our experience. Everywhere we went, whether it be the corner coffee shop, the farmers market, or to a nice restaurant, we were treated like we've known each other for years. Coming from the state of "Minnesota Nice," we like that type of relationship. Our experience with The Ranch Club was perfect in its "rustic simplicity." Also, how can you get any better than the awesome, mountain backdrop? Our stay at the C'Mon Inn was ideal to host our large number of guests. We wouldn't change a thing! Thanks to our wedding coordinator, Kathy Cambridge, who made our daughter’s wedding successful. She has a wide variety of vendor connections to custom-make the day for each individual bride. There is no way we could have done this without her expertise! Thank you Missoula, we'll be back soon!

upid arrived on the scene a few years ago and now you and your loved one have decided to unite your destinies. However, where to start? Time flies! Have you thought about sending out the invitations? Or how about gifts for the guests; the bridal bouquet; the master of ceremonies; speeches; hair, nail and make-up appointments... the marriage license?! Planning a wedding, whether it be for 30 people or 500, can seem daunting, overwhelming, stressful, and just no fun. The whole experience can make you rethink your finances, question your personal style, and even put strain on your relationships. However, only someone who is rested and relaxed can be a blushing bride. So using your resources and getting the best industry expertise can help you avoid all of that unneeded hassle. You’ve already taken a great step in picking up this helpful guide and reading through the articles and tips for planning. There are many more ways to ease your stress and make everything come together flawlessly for your big day. According to many planners, the best piece of advice for organizing a wedding is to establish a plan that includes priorities and a timeline. The most common mistake made by brides and grooms is not having a plan that requires them to look at the details before they try to sketch the big picture. It’s likely that you will begin your planning by gathering your super star list of vendors which can be a challenge all its own. Here is the part where using all of the amazing resources available to you come into play. All the work ahead of you depends on the reservations: the caterer, the officiator at the ceremony, the musicians or the disc-jockey, the venue and the hotel for out-of-town guests who will have to stay in the area. When you’ve chosen your date and set a budget you can start looking through catalogues or on the Internet for inspiration in all facets. You must take into consideration who can fit in your budget, which vendors are available for opposite page: photo by cou cou studio

your wedding date, and of course who can give you the vision you’re looking for. When you begin your search for caterers, photographers, wedding planners etc. be sure that you and your fiancé have discussed and set a wedding budget with your families as well. Within this planning guide you will find a worksheet to help you lay out what you want to spend and where. Keep this book handy and write down your wedding budget so that you can pull it out whenever you need it. To begin, talk with your fiancé about what the most important elements of your wedding are. For example, if you feel strongly about the food being extra special and out of this world allocate more money to your caterer’s services. Keep in mind custom menus will often be at a higher cost. Once you have your budget in place make a list of vendors that you want to contact. Ask friends and family for word of mouth recommendations, search for reviews, and visit their websites. This preliminary information will help you narrow down the list and weed out any that don’t appeal to you.

n the modern age we live in there are so many different media sources available to you in your planning process. Websites such as Pinterest, Wedding Wire, Yelp, and of course our own BridesAndGroomsMT.com are easily accessible and can offer you excellent reviews, examples, and advise to help you. A good trick to make sure nothing is forgotten, which could ruin the most important day of your life, is to obtain a wedding guide such as the one you have in your hand. All guides are different and the goal isn’t to follow one to the letter, but rather to adapt it to your own wedding which will be different from any other, since it’s your own! Don’t be afraid to dive into these sites and publications for inspiration. If you’re lacking direction and feel floundering the featured weddings and love stories can help you pick out what you want and what you really dislike. Another excellent option are the many wedding

associations through out Montana as well as your local chamber of commerce. Why not combine practicality with pleasure by focusing locally when preparing your wedding. By choosing to buy local, not only will you avoid wasting a great deal of time driving long distances but you will also have the pleasure of involving people in your community, those who are a part of your neighborhood and local economy. Your florist, caterer, jeweler, and all those other business people will be eager partners in making your wedding the best party of your life. In Montana we have many small towns and remote locations that can 12
make finding vendors more difficult. Looking at the members of these associations can give you options that you didn’t know were there. A fun travel opportunity for you and your wedding party includes the many local wedding fairs and shows throughout Montana. Montana Brides and Grooms is no stranger to this and hosts a wedding event every year. This provides you the chance to meet the industry experts and ask all of those burning questions that you’ve had for months as well as get answers to the ones you didn’t know you needed to ask. Even if you’re not getting married in Missoula or even western Montana this can be a fun day where you can make new connections and find inspiration for your nuptials. Finding the opportunity to educate yourself on the Dos and Don’ts of wedding planning and execution is also crucial. Tips
for making the most of your day at Montana Brides & Grooms 2016
1. Register at the check-in desk
• Stop by the registration desk on the way in so that you are eligible to win the door prizes from our vendors as well as make it onto our leads list so that you can find the right vendor for you. Let the right vendor come to you!
2. Bring your calendar • The best thing to do is set up tastings, meetings, or conference calls with the vendors you meet. They will want to capture your business so make it easy on yourself and know your schedule. 3. Use your resources • You will be provided with a room lay out and vendor list. Be strategic! There are a lot of booths and a whole day to spare, don’t rush through the room and miss all the goodies. 4. Plan your day • Be sure to check the website and Facebook page for frequent updates on new vendors, workshop times and locations. With so many opportunities you won’t want to miss anything.
5. Attend a workshop • Take a look at the workshop times and locations so that you can be sure to catch the ones that you are most interested in. The chance to gain expert tips is priceless! 6. Be prepared with your wedding budget • Be sure to have an overall budget in mind so that you can tell the vendors exactly what you envision. This will help you find the right one for you as well as give you a chance to meet in person the ones you have already contacted. 7. Don’t bring an army • Don’t bring the whole family. Make it a fun day with your core group so that you can stay focused and cross off that to do list. Too many people will pull you in so many directions you’ll fall short on your goals for the day. 8. Wear comfortable shoes • It will be a full day of fun on your feet so be prepared with a comfortable pair of sneaks 9. Take notes and grab business cards • You won’t want to lose the contact information for the vendors you liked. Make some room in your purse for the collateral and don’t be afraid to ask for tastings and meetings.

How did you meet?
I met my husband through his grandmother. She asked if I was dating anyone and told me all about my future husband. I was living in Kalispell and he was in Bozeman, so she gave me all of his contact information as well as a picture and hassled me to contact him until I finally went to Bozeman and had coffee with him. The rest is history!
content. He is my best friend and I couldn't ask for a better partner in life. I think that the most important thing for us to to always talk through our issues, even small ones. Like so many other great couples, our goal is to never go to bed angry. That is really hard to do, but it honestly helps our relationship. We make a big move right after our wedding and it has been though, but having Pete has made every moment worth it.
How did you choose your wedding vendors?
What are your plans for the future as a couple?
I grew up going to Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp and thought it would be great to have people stay the weekend. We were living in Bozeman, so we went with Bozeman shops for our outfits. For my dress I had to go to Eskay because they have the most beautiful dresses and the staff is just the best around. I found my photographer online and had a referral for Persnickety from a friend.
Tell us your fondest memory from the big day!
The best part of my big day was actually having the weekend at the camp with all of our family and friends, that was very magical to visit with everyone. Most weddings you only get a couple hours with all of your guests, but we got three days!
What would you do differently if you had the chance?
I thought I would save money on not having a DJ and I really regretted it. I think having someone there to make announcements, take requests and just control the flow of the party aspect of the wedding would have been very nice to have.
How is married life treating you?
Married life just seems like normal life. It seems like we have always been together, in a great way. Before I met Pete I was always imagining what type of man I would marry, what that life together would look like, our children, jobs, etc. Now the I have met Pete and we share our lives together life just seems very natural and 22
We plan to buy a house. We just got approved for a home loan and are starting to look at the possibilities. We are almost 30 and I am starting to feel like an actual adult for the first time! After the home, of course we want a anther puppy and a couple of awesome kids. As a couple, we are very excited to what the future holds and excited to do it as a team!
Who was the person that was most helpful to you in the planning process and why?
I am a meeting planner so I thought I could handle it all on my own. I did a pretty good job of it all, but of course I need the help of my mom and my bridesmaids! My mom is very crafty and we both spend a lot of time making paper flowers for all of the tables. We thought it would add a nice touch. She helped me pick out my dress, and helped me talk through things when I needed too. It was such a joy to be able to lean on her during such a big event in my life and for us to grow closer together. The day of the wedding my bridesmaid helped me so much and I am so grateful. They all say how calm I was that day, but really it was because of everyone else taking care of things so I could be calm! My husband also helped a great deal. He addressed all of the invitations, wrote a lot of thank you notes, helped me with my stress and had a lot of great input. I am a very blessed and humble bride for everyone's help-no one can do it alone!

A Guide to
good grooming
T
here is nothing quite as elegant as a bride on her wedding day. Having spent the entire day being primped and pampered to look and feel her absolute best, a groom may begin to worry that he might have a real beauty and the beast situation on his hands if he’s not careful. She’s perfect and you’re an average Joe with a bad haircut and a penguin suit? No! That is NOT how this is going to go down. The wedding day being all about the bride, those days are over. With our advice you will be the single most stylish, suave and debonair gentleman that has ever graced a wedding altar with their presence.
The Ring
Your path to style and sensibility starts with a few small decisions that will set the stage for your entire marriage. So if for some reason you think that shopping for a wedding ring is a lot like shopping for a new set of tires for your truck, we have a few suggestions that will set you down the right path. Now there are a lot of things to consider when ring shopping, so our first suggestion would be march straight on over to her jewelry box to see what style of ring she already has. Once you’re done snooping, it’s time to do some “prospecting.” When choosing a stone for your ring, tradition tells us that a center-set diamond is ALWAYS the way to go, but your lover may want something a little more stylish and unique. You’re also going to want to take consideration of the various cuts and colors of stone that are available as well. Something that is sure to make her ring stand out would be a yellow or pink hue diamond. And if you’re really looking for something different, you could take a look at some chocolate or black diamonds as well. Diamonds are generally cut into ten standard shapes, round being the most common. A helpful hint here, because round is the most common cut, it is also the most expensive. You could save some serious cash for that honeymoon if you choose a different shape. Actually, it is even pretty trendy right now to do a rough cut diamond.
by devin leonardi
Having chosen a stone, it’s now time to think about what metal would be the most appropriate. Generally grooms stick to the main staples of platinum, white gold, yellow gold, and rose gold. Platinum and white gold are by far the most popular choices, but keep mind that platinum is far more durable and about 50% more expensive. Once you have made all of these “little decisions” it’s now time to put your super sleuth skills from earlier to the test. The overall style of the ring is by far the most crucial element. Would she prefer something more sleek and minimalistic, or something with a bit of weight to it? This is where you have to trust your instincts. Think about the clothes she wears, the style of her home. You know her pretty well by now, hopefully, so you should be able to tell what she has a taste for. Put all that together and you should have yourself one sensible and stylish ring.
The Vows
Now that you’ve got the perfect ring, you’re going to need to have the perfect presentation. This is where you get to prove your style and sensibility not only to your future wife, but to all your family and friends. You have the ability to make them laugh, cry, feel pure joy and love. You only get one shot, so let’s make sure we do it right the first time. First things first, you are entering into a new marriage so it might be a good idea to start it out on the same foot. We definitely recommend that you talk with your future Mrs. to agree on a format and tone for your vows. Nothing would be more awkward if she got up there and told a love story comparable to Tristan and Iseult and you followed it up with a terrible standup routine. That wouldn’t be stylish or sensible, now would it? Once you’ve come to an agreement, you’re going to need to do is find some inspiration. If you practice a certain religion, start with the by-the-book vows and work your way out from there. You will be able to use these ideas to create something of your own or use

them as a platform to do something else entirely. Once you find a few you like, take some time to sit down with them and consider what is about them that you appreciate. Reflect on your fiancé and how you first met, when you fell in love, and when you first knew you wanted to marry her. Make sure you write these down. They’re important! Not all of them have to be sappy and beautiful. You’re just taking a few notes on your favorite things about her. A vow is a promise that you will be making to you wife. So you’re going to need to come up with a few promises to make as well. These can be broad or specific, but make sure they are something you truly mean to uphold. Now that you’ve done all that you are ready to start writing it all out. This is where you will authenticate your love, commend your partner, of course offer a 26
few promises and close with a final declaration or vow. We find that this format is pretty fail proof as long as you avoid clichés, anything that would be considered private or embarrassing and keep it to two minutes, maximum. Make sure you practice, practice, practice. You are going to be full of emotion so the better you know this stuff, the easier it will be to overcome your need to weep for joy while speaking publically in front of everyone you know. Practicing out loud will also help you locate any trouble spots that you might stumble over. Fix them now so you can avoid an awkward flub later. Once you’re comfortable the only thing left to do is make yourself a clean copy. Not only will it give you something to go off of, but it will also act as a really nice keepsake later on. Who knows, it might even end up in a wedding photo or two?

The Attire
The final piece that establishes a groom’s style and sensibility is of course the tuxedo. By now you have probably heard the saying “look good, feel good.” Well, it couldn’t be more true than on your wedding day. With all the hustle and bustle you’re going to want to be the guy that looks as though he is the head of a charitable foundation or a multi-national conglomerate, nothing could phase you. Following these five simple rules will be sure to set you up for wedding day success. Rule One: Find something that suits you
The key to looking your best is making sure that you are picking something that is fitting to your body type. For instance, if you are tall and lanky, it may be in your best interest to try and add some bulk to your attire with a double breasted suit. If you’re a broader gentle28
man, try something fitted with a contoured waist to give you the slimmer look you’ve always wanted. Rule Two: Fit the wedding style
Your tux should fit with the venue and overall feel of the wedding. You probably wouldn’t want to wear a linen suit in a formal church venue, would you? Outdoor or daytime weddings are a better fit for lighter colors that are a bit more casual. If it’s an indoor event in a ballroom or church you may want to go with a darker color. If it’s extra-formal, think white on black or straight white. That will be sure to impress. Rule Three: Work together, but do what feels right
Your wedding is the first opportunity you will get to show off your style and sensibility as a couple, so make sure that it is a joint effort. At any rate she will

be able to tell you what she’s wearing, without showing you of course, and will help guide your style in the right direction. If you match her you’ll match the rest of the wedding party, too. While this is somewhat of a team effort, you still want to have that “look good, feel good” attitude, so make sure you don’t let her make the decision for you. Rule Four: A suit fit for a king
Regardless of whether you are renting or buying most shops will custom tailor the suit to your fit. Even the most luxurious tuxedo will look and feel like a burlap sack if not fitted properly. Here are some things to keep an eye out for: • Jacket sleeves should leave one-fourth to one-half inch of the shirt cuff exposed while landing at or near the wrist bone. • Keep an eye on the vent on your coat, it shouldn’t pull open. If it does, it’s too tight. • Your jacket and shirt collars should ALWAYS lie flat. 30
• Your pants should fit comfortably regardless of position and should break over the top third of the shoe leaving just a single crease. • All ties should fit snugly, always and forever. Rule Five: Accessories make the man
It’s great to have everyone matching properly, but you are going to want to stand out from your groomsmen and the rest of the crowd. Achieving a unique look is all in the details. Wedding Day
dos & don'ts
T
he ring is on her finger, now the planning begins. Don’t get overwhelmed. Instead, listen to these pros’ advice for creating the day you want.
Catering: Dominic Glenna
executive chef and owner of A Moveable Feast, Missoula Don’t: Try to please everyone. It’s your day. Do: Know and report any serious guest food allergies. While you shouldn’t worry about everyone’s eating quirks, if someone will die if they eat nuts, your caterer can make sure they don’t use any. Don’t: Serve any food you don’t like. Just because it’s a family recipe, doesn’t mean it has to be on your menu. You should like everything served at the wedding. Do: Consider the season when you are getting married. Are your guests going to want to eat hot clam chowder and mashed potatoes while sitting under the hot summer sun? Don’t: Overdo it. If you are going to offer appetizers during cocktail hour, your guests won’t eat as much food during dinner. Do: Think beyond traditional wedding foods. If you are offering a late-night buffet for guests that have been drinking and dancing, it’s okay to serve French fries and other classic late-night munchies.
Photography: Mae Foresta
Night Owl imagery, Missoula Do: Choose a photographer that matches your style. Don’t: Let family and friends disappear while taking group shots. It can significantly throw off your schedule hunting down people for pictures. Do: Take engagement pictures with the photographer you want to shoot your wedding. It’s the perfect testrun to make sure you mesh and will make you more comfortable around them on your wedding day. Don’t: Let family members and friends get in your photographer’s way. People might want to get

photographs of the wedding and unknowingly block the professional you’ve hired to document your day. Do: Listen to your photographer. Their job is to make you look good.
Wedding dress: Rachelle Klein
manager at Willow Bride, Whitefish Don’t: Wait until the last minute. It takes three to six months to get your dress once you order it. Do: Try on a bunch of dresses and be open to trying styles you haven’t before. Don’t: Listen to convention. If you want a ball gown, but are getting married on the beach, buy the ball gown. Your dream dress trumps the sand. Do: Be honest. Say what you like and don’t. Don’t: Bring more than three people when you try on dresses. Do: Find a good seamstress. No matter how well your dress fits, it might need adjustments. Don’t: Fall in love with something you can’t buy. Know your budget before you start trying on dresses.
Event planner: Kathy Cambridge
PLAN4IT EVENTs, LLC, Missoula Do: Call a wedding planner before you do anything else. A planner can often get you discounts with vendors, but not if you’ve already signed a contract. Most will offer a free initial consultation meeting. Don’t: Think of wedding planners as only for big budget weddings. Whether your budget is $6,000 or six figures, a planner can work with you. Don’t: Be deterred by the cost of a planner. Some planners can save you so much money with vendors they offset their fee. Do: Ask for credentials. A planner should be certified. Don’t: Be afraid to dream. Even if it’s out of your budget, share your vision, good planners have a way of making things happen. Do: Be realistic and willing to make some concessions if your budget is tight.

How did you meet?
We met while pursuing engineering degrees at Montana Tech in Butte, America. Our freshman year, Trevor’s roommate was my chemistry lab partner. When I was forming an intramural volleyball team, his roommate asked, “Can my roommate play? He’s really tall!” I was so excited that I called my mom to tell her about this tall guy. He sure was tall, 6’8” to be exact, but I couldn’t get him to talk to me. He was so shy. A full year and a half later, while playing intramural basketball, someone runs up behind me and picks me up. It was Trevor! He asked me on a date and I guess the rest is history. I later found out that it was margarita Wednesday and it was the liquid courage that gave him the guts to talk to me but I’m not complaining.
How did you choose your wedding vendors?
Luckily, I have a big family so that helped with some of the decisions. My aunt, Trudy, is an amazing florist and my cousin, Dina, is a wonderful photographer. Word of mouth led us to The Flying Horse MT. The beautiful flowers, pond, mountain view and barn set up made our dream wedding become reality. The grounds were so beautiful that we hardly had to decorate. We could tell that Kim and Lynette wanted the day to be just as perfect as we did. Facebook reviews led us to Zootown DJ. When I talked to Brett, the owner, he seemed so excited for us and wanted to help with any detail he could. When you talk to a vendor (on the phone or in person) and you get a good vibe from them, you just know that they will make your big day even bigger than you could imagine.

Tell us your fondest memory from the big day!
Picking just one is incredibly hard. Looking back, we still say that it was the best day EVER. Our favorite part of the big day was having all the people we love in one place for the entire day. How special is that? Everyone helped decorate. Trevor’s dad played his guitar and sang during the ceremony. There was a herd of 15-20 kids running around and dancing the night away with us. Our friends traveled from different states to be there. The toasts from our closest friends had us laughing until we cried. It is amazing how many people took the time to come celebrate with us. I’ve never felt so loved, not just by my new husband, but by all of our family and friends.
What would you do differently if you had the chance?
I would try to stress less in the months before the big day. I felt like I was pretty relaxed until the day came that I had to drop all the save the dates into the mailbox. I told Trevor that I was having anxiety about letting them go because I had spent so much time handwriting all 150 addresses. That’s when I knew I had lost my mind a little bit. In the end, everything happened exactly how it was supposed to happen. It was perfect. No one notices the minor things that might go wrong. Another thing I wish I would have remembered is to not over do it. We worked for hours printing and assembling over 200 programs for the ceremony. You know the cute ones that have a handle and can be used as a fan. The day after the wedding, I realized that over half of them were still in the box. Not worth all the burns from the hot glue gun. I think the key is to remember that you can’t do every single thing you see on Pinterest. If you try, you will end up with a lot of sleepless nights, many trips to Hobby Lobby and empty printer cartridges.

Serve a Spectacular
feast for all
O
ne big decision when planning your wedding is what to serve your guests. The meal is the main event of the reception and also represents a big portion of a wedding budget. Catering typically accounts for 45 to 50 percent of the total wedding budget and will be a large part of what people remember about your day. The possibilities abound where wedding menus are concerned: banquet, barbecue, tapas, cocktail party, buffet, etc. Choose a formula and foods that are in line with your budget and your wedding theme. Being able to see and taste the dishes that will be served at your reception is essential. An experienced caterer will be prepared to offer a tasting, as well as references from prior clients. Think about a menu that includes some hors d’ oeuvres, a main course, and usually your wedding cake for desert. A major budget factor is whether your meal will be served buffet-style or plated as a full-service, sit-down meal. When deciding on the menu, you may want to consider providing choices for children, include an entrée for vegetarians, as well as a general meal for the majority of the other guests. Costs will increase if you choose several general meals, as this lengthens preparation time. If you are providing multiple options on a buffet, keep in mind you will need to provide enough for every guest - not just the vegetarians will eat the veggie option. Chef Dominic Glenna of A Moveable Feast catering in Missoula recommends tailoring your menu to the season and the uniqueness of the wedding couple. “If your wedding takes place in August, you could incorporate locally grown Dixon melons into it, or Flathead cherries and huckleberries are always a way to treat guests to a few Montana favorites. Your chef should also be open to considering family traditions, unique recipes and your heritage into your special day.” For the first course, choose seasonal products, such as a salad during the summer or a soup in the fall or winter. For the main course, chicken is usually a less-
expensive option which can be prepared in a variety of ways. Many menus include two different proteins: chicken and beef, for example. “If a couple is on a tighter budget they might opt for flank steak or tri-tip, rather than prime rib,” Glenna explains. “There are a lot of different ways to prepare these cuts of meat that make them great, less expensive options for weddings.” When it comes to desserts, the wedding cake is definitely the star of the show, however, many couples also offer other sweet treats such as chocolate fountains, a dessert buffet with small bites of pastries, a donut tower, fruit and cheese displays, or candy buffets. A sundae bar is also a big hit for a summer wedding. Be sure to check with your caterer about any restrictions on allowing food from other sources; most will not allow you to serve any food, including a cake that is not prepared by a licensed business. Depending on the theme, timing of your wedding and the tastes of your guests, you could also serve a late-night snack. “A midnight snack is increasingly popular for wedding receptions,” Glenna said. “Couples are offering anything from bar-type foods to live-action stations where a chef cooks small bites to order. Fun menu ideas could be things like gourmet burger sliders, French fries, fried calamari, and grilled cheese sandwiches with hot tomato soup shooters. Some couples even offer a late-night brunch.” Family-style meals are also an up-and-coming wedding trend, according to theknot.com. In fact, more brides and grooms are requesting that their reception meals be served family-style to take the stuffiness out of a sit-down meal. This format allows for more interaction between guests at the table. Large platters take the place of big centerpieces on the tables. Most everyone has heard of the food-truck craze, but they aren’t just for a quick bite after a night out on the town – they are also a trend for wedding receptions.
opposite page: photo by jesse & nelli photography
“Our food cart works well for people with a lessstructured reception where people can mingle and eat throughout the night,” explained Emma Poole, owner of The Clove Cart Pizza Peddlers. “We have done fun events at different parks, in people’s backyards and at other less formal venues. We are a less-expensive and simpler option than a full-service caterer. More than one food cart would be ideal if you want people to eat throughout the night.” According to theknot.com, you should plan on at least one food truck for about every 75 guests. Any fewer and you may have a lot of hungry guests standing in lines. Food trucks are also a great idea for incorporating that late-night snack into your wedding or for rehearsal dinners. “Food carts also work well for people who want something late night or for more laid-back rehearsal dinners. It’s a good way to have a fun, laid-back party and to add 40
a social aspect to your whole meal,” said Poole. Some couples are opting out of a full meal all together and are offering a variety of appetizers throughout the reception or limiting it to a cocktail hour immediately following the ceremony. In order to make this option work, it is all about timing. A late-night reception that starts after dinnertime or a late-afternoon reception is most ideal, and be sure to make it clear that dinner will not be served by adding something on your invitation like, "Join us after the ceremony for cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and dancing." While you can benefit from the inspirations of your caterer, just be sure to choose a meal that fits with your theme and is sure to please both you and your guests. If you are having a difficult time deciding, base your decision on the style of your wedding, the time of year, or the place you have chosen for the reception.

• If you rent your own dishes, who will wash them and return them to the rental company? • What are the charges for staffing, and what services will the staff provide? • Is there a charge for cake cutting and the champagne toast? • Does your caterer have a liquor license or will you need to hire another vendor? • Do you do wedding tastings, and is there a charge? Once you have decided on a menu and ironed out these details, it’s time to plan the drinks. Often times the catering company you choose will help coordinate the beverages as well. If your caterer does not have a liquor license, you should consider hiring a beverage caterer. “The biggest reason to hire a beverage caterer is it takes all the responsibility out of your hands. anything happens to one of your guests during the event or on their way home,” said Melissa Wagner of Badlander Beverage Catering in Missoula. “Another advantage is we can order wine and beer from anywhere in the world. Say a bride and groom are hosting a destination wedding and want a beer from back home we can order it for them.” Many couples are opting to keep bar costs down by offering one or two signature cocktails in addition to beer and wine. Offering his and hers drinks based on the bride and grooms drink preferences can add a fun element to the reception. Pick a drink that features your favorite liquor, matches your color scheme or is just plain delicious. Popular options include mojitos or blueberry mojitos as a twist on the classic mojito, a wedding rum punch, a gin fizz or a hot toddy if you are tying the knot in the winter. Other ideas can be as simple as adding a fruit skewer or sprig of lavender to champagne. Some couples pro-

Montana Destination weddings
by Jessica Lowry
M
ontana has long been known for it’s wide open spaces, rugged landscape, and endless big sky. While Missoula and Bozeman have consistently landed on lists as the best places to live in magazines including Outside Magazine, Men’s Journal and Sunset, locales across the state’s picture-perfect backdrop has become a sought-after spots to tie the knot. Popular wedding blogs including “Style Me Pretty”, “Ruffled”, and “Green Wedding Shoes” have featured the state’s stunning celebrations too. Celebrities including Scarlett Johannson, Kate Bosworth and Chris Klein aren’t alone in choosing Montana as the place to get hitched. A growing number of brides and grooms are following their lead and choosing to plan their romantic destination wedding in Montana. Those working in the wedding industry, including Graham Stanley, Director of Group Sales for The Resort at Paws Up in Greenough, Montana, can see why the trend is growing. “People love being in a natural setting and the Missoula area has some seriously amazing nature backdrops” said Stanely. “Between the Blackfoot River, the surrounding mountains, the pine trees, and the incredible prairie vistas, brides are sure to find something they love!”
With over 140,000 square miles of epic views, the natural beauty of Montana offers a variety of locations and venues across the state for a wedding to remember. From all-inclusive resorts like Paws Up in Greenough and The Ranch at Rock Creek in Phillipsburg to more rustic locations like the shores of Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park or the banks of the Hyalite Reservoir outside Bozeman, couples will find an endless number of beautiful choices. “I think that a lot of people don’t know about the hidden gem that is Montana and that’s part of the allure,” said Stanley. “It’s something different.” For Allison Mouch, who married her husband Drew at Camp Paxson on Seeley Lake, that something different was the laid back feeling of the area. “It's a very relaxed atmosphere and you can take advantage of the local food, drink, art & culture,” said Mouch. “It's one of the most beautiful locations and allowed us to really personalize our wedding and treat our guests to a true Montana experience!” For many of their out-of-town guests, it was their first time in Montana. The opportunity for the bride and groom to share the beauty of the state with their friends and family was the icing on their wedding cake. “They loved it - it gave them a great excuse for an extended vacation.”

How did you meet?
Joe had met my dad and brother-in-law while I lived in Denver. In 2007 I moved back to Montana and they me introduced to Joe. We've been together ever since! Neither of us ever wanted to rush into marriage, we lived together so it seemed like we were kind of already married. After 6 years I decided to take matters into my own hands. We were on vacation cruise and I set up a fake dance contest with the cruise event director. If you and your partner were dancing, you were given a ticket that would be put in a drawing for a prize. Of course I already had the winning ticket, so when the DJ called the number I was given the microphone and asked Joe to marry me. He was completely surprised and of course said yes. Being the traditional guy that he is, a few months later he tied my engagement ring around my dog Nugget's neck with a ribbon. She walked up to me with him following and then he asked me to marry him.

How did you choose your wedding vendors?
Joe's family homesteaded Mungas (2T) ranch in Philipsburg. Montana. The Ranch at Rock Creek borders the Mungas Ranch and has the all included amenities we wanted along with being absolutely stunning. Autumn, our event planner, helped us find the rest of the vendors!
Tell us your fondest memory from the big day!
Our wedding was small - only 18 people. So one of my fondest memories that day was sitting at the dinner table during our “reception” and seeing all of Joe & my loved ones sharing in this special moment with us.
What would you do differently if you had the chance?
I really can’t think of anything I would change. I hired a planner so I never had to worry about a single thing on the wedding day. From my viewpoint, everything was so perfect, I wouldn’t change a thing!

ave you been dreaming about wedding dresses since you were a little girl? As the bride, you will be the focus of everyone’s attention on your big day, including all the guests as well as your beloved. But in order to be the most beautiful woman in the room, the star of the celebration must choose her dress, accessories and style carefully. Here are a few tips to help you.
The Dress
Think before you shop. It’s exhausting trying on dozens of dresses at random in the hopes of finding the perfect one. Before going shopping, be sure to browse some magazines and search the Internet to narrow down the styles you prefer. Shop well in advance. Most people get married in the summer, so dressmakers’ agendas soon fill up and the prettiest dresses fly off the racks quickly. Make sure you plan enough time for the fittings. “We recommend starting to shop six to twelve months out,” explained Rebecca Wagner, owner of Rococo Bridal Missoula, “If it is less than six months it really limits our ability to custom order.” Choose carefully who you shop with. Don’t shop with a crowd of friends who will confuse you with all their comments and diverging opinions. Choose one or two people who know you well and who have good taste. You’ll want them to be able to give you some honest feedback. Choose a dress that you like. Your dress should make you feel good and allow you to be yourself. You also want to be comfortable walking up the aisle and dancing. Naturally, you’ll also want to choose a model that flatters your figure. Bear in mind the general atmosphere. Your outfit should harmonize with the wedding theme and the reception hall. For instance, a formal sequined dress in not really appropriate for an outdoor wedding in Glacier Park.
“Your dress should be one of the first things you purchase because it sets the tone for the rest of your wedding,” Wagner said. “For example if you buy a really fancy dress you will want to coordinate your decorations, bridesmaid dresses etcetera.” Decide how much you want to spend on your dress before you begin your search. That way you won’t ruin your whole wedding budget by splurging on an expensive dress. Thousands of different styles and models of wedding gowns are available on the market, one more beautiful than the next. From white to cream, from long to short, and lace, pearls, and silks: there is certainly no lack of choice. But before you set out on a marathon tour of all the wedding dress boutiques, it is important to know your body type so that you can know what style of dress will best suit you. “If you go to a reputable bridal shop and make an appointment, the consultant should be knowledgeable of different dress silhouettes that fit well with your body type,” explained Wagner. Do you have an hourglass shape (shoulders and hips of equal width, with smaller waist)? You could treat yourself to a “mermaid” gown that accentuates your curves. If you dream of a royal wedding, the princess dress is perfect for you, as is a two-piece dress with a bustier. In short, anything that flatters the waistline will emphasize your feminine curves. For apple or V-shaped figures (shoulder broader than the hips), look more for an empire waist or A-line dress which will balance your proportions. If your hips are wider than your shoulders, you have a pear or A-shaped figure. Look for an A-line style and avoid a straight or mermaid dress that draws eyes where you don’t want them to be. When your shoulders, hips, and waist are all of a similar width, you have a straight or I-shape, avoid a straight dress, opting for an A-line or princess style or one with a bodice, which will create a more curved effect.

If you’re petite, look for a simple dress without too many frills. Belts should be avoided, as they will cut your silhouette in tow where a lengthening effect would be more desirable. According to theknot.com a basic bateau neckline and dipped V neckline are the trends of 2016. Colored dresses are still in fashion but are taking on more subtle tones of blush, shades of pink and rose, and tones of taupe, nude and silver. Cropped tops are
popular for those looking for something unique and a little more risqué. Feathers add a dramatic or delicate finish to dresses. “We are seeing a lot of lace,” said Wagner, “ivory lace over champagne colors really makes the lace stand out. Brides are moving away from white and ivory and towards champagne or blush-colored dresses, to vintage inspired dresses and a lot more straps and sleeves.”

Wedding Hair
A bride’s hairstyle is essential to the look she wishes to create for her wedding day. Choosing among this year’s trends is one way to find the perfect style. “It used to be that up-dos were popular but now they are more reserved for proms and pageants,” said Rachel Kenck stylist at Shear Art Salon. “Beachy waves with half off the face are really in right now. Brides don’t want anything too extravagant they are going more for lacey and classic dresses so that’s also how they want their hair.” Braids are also popular, but, for a more natural look, they should be soft and loose, with a few locks falling around the face to create a slightly tousled look. Choose an accessory to add a more personal touch to a hairstyle. Tiaras or headbands are lovely; some wrap partially or completely around the head and come decorated with flowers and leaf patterns, curves, yellow and rose gold head pieces, statement flowers, 56
pearls, or Swarovski crystals. Such jewels are as perfect in loose hair as they are with loose braids or buns. “What’s really big right now is tiara like headbands. Today’s brides are not into glam but just a little shine,” adds Kenck. With the help of your hair dresser, you can create the hair-style you’ve always dreamed of. Be sure to make an appointment well ahead of your wedding day for a consultation about options and styles. “Our prices include a practice run,” explains Kenck. “We want everything to be perfect for the bride and we like to be hands on. We work with the bride to achieve exactly what they are looking for. Whatever is easier for the bride works for us, we go on location, we work in our salon or we will even travel.” Whether you choose to done your grandmother’s heirloom wedding gown or opt for a trendy asymmetrical hemline all eyes will be on the bride and your prepping and preening will make you the belle of the ball.

A Man's Manual
to matrimony
By Dominic Farrenkopf
I
n order for the groom to put together the perfect wedding day, he must plan accordingly. Here is a brief guide that sheds light on many aspects of "tying the knot." Once the groom has found his perfect match, he must propose to his bride-to-be. There are many opinions as to the logistics of the perfect proposal, but most marriage counselors agree that the setting needs to be a comfortable place both for the man and woman. Before he can propose, he needs a ring. Kari Murphey, manager of family-owned Riddle's Jewelry in Missoula, had this to offer: "In order for the groom to pick the perfect ring, he should try to select the ring based on knowing what she would like. He shouldn't seek help from his family or friends; he's flying solo on this one. Some men do take their bride-to-be windowshopping to get an idea of what she would like, but ultimately it is up to him. He should select a ring that he likes, too, and have it fitted later." If she says "yes," he now needs a venue. "Couples select the venues," said Jenny Hurst, production manager for Habitat Events and Floral Studio. "The time of year can determine an indoor or outdoor wedding, and that, too, can help determine the venue. You should reserve the venue as soon as possible along with your vendors, such as caterers and photographers, especially for weddings on summer weekends. Wedding blogs and websites, such as Style Me Pretty or Wedding Wire, can be helpful. Lastly, a wedding coordinator can be a great resource for finding venues. The next step is planning the honeymoon. "The destination should be planned according to the best match for the couple's interests, travel dates and budget. A cruise has the advantage of unpacking just once and then you can focus solely on one another. However, others like the thrill of figuring out a remote destination together. Consider your fiancÊe: Does she generally like surprises, or are you marrying a person who loves researching and knowing what to expect in advance? Either way, I would suggest booking 2-18

months in advance," said Mary Curry, production manager of Adventure Life Voyage. Another key item is the tuxedo rental. Labreena Homan, manager of Tuxedo Gallery, said the groom should allow at least two weeks for renting the tuxedos. "The bride picks the colors, and together they pick the style of tuxedo. We have all of the styles in-store displayed on mannequins to view, feel and try on," said Homan. Groomsman gifts must also be considered. Things Remembered store manager, Jennie Bridgewater, said gifts that can be engraved are a good idea as they offer something that reminds the groomsman of the day and makes it more personalized. "Some popular items are flasks, money clips, pocket knives and wallets. We ask that you give us a few days' notice before the wedding--please don't procrastinate. Most importantly, be thoughtful with the inscription and know the spelling of the names. We have a full book of ideas that people can draw from when choosing an inscription," Bridgewater said. Planning the bachelor party can be somewhat daunting, but Tami Ursich, owner of The Iron Horse Bar and Grill offered this information: "The groom needs to just show up because the best man plans and pays for the party. First and foremost, get a designated driver. The groom can be fitted with a ball and chain, and jokes can be made all night about being tied down and that he's caught. Try not to get into a fight, have fun and don't forget to get a designated driver." And finally, when the big day comes, accept this advice from the Rev. Wayne D. Wardwell, a retired minister who performed wedding ceremonies for more than 60 years. "Don't worry if you can't remember what to do or say. I have the book in front of me and will tell you what to say and when to do it," Wardwell said. If the groom can manage to get all of these details pulled together, he can relax and truly enjoy his wedding day.

stefan & dylen
stefan & dylen Mccrumb Married October 10, 2015 at The Barn on Finley Point in polson, Montana Photography by Amber Siderius Photography • Flowers by Just Bea’s Floral & Gifts Event design by the bride & groom • Catering by Brett McCrumb, Paul Walhood, & Market on Front Music by Gladys Friday • Bride's dress by Roberta Johnson of Tri-Cities, Washington tuxedo rental by Tuxedo Gallery
How did you meet?
Stefan and I met officially at Swannee's in Polson on Halloween in 2013. I was dressed up as "Babe-raham Lincoln," he wasn't dressed up. We both knew one another, but not very well. He asked me for a haircut before his next guard drill and at the time I knew I would not remember, so I gave him my phone number and the next day he texted me. It must have been my Abe Lincoln beard that got him. That's where it all began and I've been cutting his hair and laughing with him ever since, it took three haircuts before our first date.
How did you choose your wedding vendors?
We were very lucky choosing our wedding vendors, our location actually belongs to Stefan's grandparents Dennis and Lucy McCrumb, so that was easy. The photographer's work speaks for itself, but she is a good friend also. I have used Just Bea's for years, and wouldn't use anyone else. Allentown, Mr. Walhood, and The Market, are all either friends or family and are all spoken highly of. Gladys Friday's members are all friends of mine and they are amazing. The gown I shopped around but couldn't find the one, I contacted Roberta after seeing hers and she was amazing. St.Char-Ro works with Lucy at the Barn a lot, and she referred them, the rest we just did our research and stuck to the budget. We had hair done by Polson's Cutting Edge, and makeup was done by Abana Skin and 406 Beauty
Tell us your fondest memory from the big day!
My favorite memory from that day was the ceremony, it was beautiful and personalized. Stefan's grandfather Bill Anderson was the officiant and we wrote our own vows. We had so much fun, and the weather was beautiful for an October day. The speeches everyone gave at the reception were all pretty amazing to, it's hard to pick one thing. Our first dance was pretty awesome too. It was wonderful having so many people there to support us as well. 62
What would you do differently if you had the chance?
If I had the chance to do things differently I would have done the wedding earlier than 4 p.m. Everyone tells you that the day goes by fast, but you don’t realize how fast it really goes does go by. We had over 300 guests, and for the ones I did get to thank or say hi to I am grateful, but so many were missed. If we would have done it at 2 p.m. I think that would have been ideal. But overall I wouldn’t change a lot. We truly had an amazing day.
Who was the person that was most helpful to you in the planning process and why?
The person that was most helpful in the planning process? Well, that is a hard question to answer. First of all, our parents paid for 90% or more of the wedding. Stefan's grandparents let us use their venue as a gift, which saved us a huge cost. Family and friends really helped a lot with food and setting up. I really can't say one person but The Barn on Finley Point that Stefan's grandparents own has lots of decorations on its own and room to stay upstairs which is where we all got ready. The gals that did hair and makeup are my best friends and coworkers, they did a phenomenal job and it was so fun getting ready with them. Our photographer was phenomenal. Amber did a great job getting us to be timely, and for what we paid, we got all that we wanted and more. Our dessert table was a huge hit, we had at least five ladies help with that. We had a few close family friends help set up that weren't even associated with the bridal party that did a great job. Allentown was amazing working with us on the bar, the Market on Front we got so many compliments on their food. Lastly, Stefan's grandfather put tons of effort into our ceremony as the officiant. It was completely customized and we both are forever grateful. Oh, and we had some high schoolers from Polson's Lutheran Youth Organization that served food for us. It was super helpful and they were so polite!
