OFFICE

OF THE GOVERNOR STATE OF MONTANA

Steve Bullock GOVERNOR

Montana

Mike Cooney LT. GOVERNOR

Dear Fans of Special Olympics Montana,

Fellow Montanans: If you are a fan of sports that create unity in our communities, then you are already a fan of Special Olympics. If you are a fan of dignity, then you are already a fan of Special Olympics. If you are a fan of generosity, then you are already a fan of Special Olympics. To all the fans, I welcome you all to the 2017 Special Olympics Montana State Summer Games in Missoula. Summer Games showcase the hard work and training of athletes and represent a unique opportunity to unify and strengthen our communities and state. They remind us how to play and live unified so all Montanans are valued for their gifts and talents. They give all participants the opportunity to share their talents, skills, and friendship with other athletes and fellow Montanans. We know the strength of this great state is founded upon imagining the possible with the resolve to never give up. This is no more apparent than here, at these Summer Games, where athletes try their best and inspire all of us to do the same. As Honorary Head Coach of the Special Olympics Summer Games, let me be among the first to thank all the athletes, the city of Missoula, the Five Valley Area, and the hundreds of volunteers, organizations, and businesses for all their efforts to showcase the talents of these great athletes—at these Games and throughout the year. Your work puts the “treasure” into Treasure State. To our athletes, congratulations! Regardless of how you finish, having started makes you all champions! I invite you to join us on May 17th, 2017 for the Special Olympics Montana State Summer Games. See you there!

In just a few days, one of Montana’s largest and certainly most inspiring sports competitions will be hosted in Missoula. Please join us for the 2017 Special Olympics Montana State Summer Games, May 16-19, and cheer on some of the world’s most determined athletes. On and off the playing field athletes will inspire you by their tenacity, humble you by their sportsmanship, and challenge you to give your personal best in whatever you do. Join us Wednesday, May 17 at 7 p.m. (6:30 p.m. preshow) for a spirited, fun and family-friendly Opening Ceremony in Washington Grizzly Stadium on the University of Montana campus. The Law Enforcement Torch Run will deliver the Flame of Hope as the high energy High Street Band from Boise, Idaho gets all the fans on their feet. How can you participate? Attend competitions and be a fan in the stands. Encourage athletes and witness the everyday heroism of their can-do attitudes. Watch athletes remove the apostrophe from words like can’t, won’t and don’t, and replace them with can, will and do. Help reveal the champion in all of us. Lend a hand and volunteer! It’s not too late! Just visit www.somt.org and register to volunteer online. As an athlete-centered, family-based, volunteer-driven and sponsor-donor supported movement, we gratefully acknowledge the many coaches who’ve given considerable time to prepare athletes for competition; the volunteer Games Management Team guided by Games Co-Directors Jim Foley and James Scott, Jr. who have given countless hours to prepare to welcome everyone; the hundreds of sponsors and donors who through their financial support underwrite these Games, and to loving families who share their masterful teachers, the athletes, with all of us. To all, thank you for believing in the human spirit and for helping lift up the athletes so they may take their rightful place in our communities. Be part of a joyful revolution that unites all of us around fitness and health, acceptance and respect, and inclusive communities. Join us. Attend the Games. It’s Game On!

Sincerely,

STEVE BULLOCK Governor

Giving Time, Receiving Love he exercise of volunteering nourishes the soul, and its after-effects are contagious. Donating time to a worthy cause, organization or someone in need strikes a chord deep within our core, somewhere the naked eye can’t see. And the good vibrations keep us coming back for more. For First Interstate Bank employees—and countless others—Special Olympics of Montana has provided that platform by celebrating the successes and strengths of some of Montana’s mightiest athletes. Each year, these Olympians remind us that the glory is in the pursuit, not the result, as everyday heroes reveal themselves right before our eyes. We find resolve in their grit, their heart and their spirit. It’s what’s kept First Interstate Bank employees like Sarah Mariani, James Scott and Kara Cook coming back year after year to volunteer for Special Olympics—an organization all three have said changed their lives.

Both sides of the finish line

Two Special Olympics memories stick out in Sarah Mariani’s mind. She fondly remembers watching one athlete (who’d trained for two months straight) come inches from victory, only to pass it up for an even greater reward. Just as he was about to cross the finish line, the young man noticed one of his fellow competitors had tripped, falling to the track. He stopped. Lifted him up, and they crossed the finish line together. “Of course this cost him his medal, but that didn’t bother him at all,” Mariani said. “He cared more about his new buddy than placing on the podium.” There wasn’t a dry eye in the stadium, Mariani said. Mariani has been involved with Special Olympics since 2014, serving on the Summer State Games Management Team as Awards Director. In 2015, she was recruited to join the Five Valleys Area Management Team as a Special Events Coordinator and is now training to become the Athlete Leadership Director. Cheering on Special Olympics athletes is second nature to Mariani, but during one occasion, she found herself on the receiving end of their encouragement and support. She’d volunteered to participate in the Special Olympics “Over the Edge” fundraiser at First Interstate Bank in Billings. Nerves gave way to fear while rappelling down the 18-story building, but a Special Olympics athlete calmed and reassured Mariani so she could finish. “Another Special Olympics athlete was at the bottom of the building after my rappel to drape a participation medal around my neck,” she said. Mariani said the friendships she’s developed with athletes and other Special Olympics volunteers are priceless. “I have yet to meet a volunteer who hasn’t returned to help again,” she said.

In his DNA

James Scott understands and appreciates the value of giving back to the places we call home. As a member of First Interstate Bank’s founding family, James continues to spur on the legacy left by his grandfather, Homer Scott, Sr. The bank has grown from a single location in Sheridan, Wyo., to more than 80 locations throughout Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota. A commitment to giving back to the communities it serves has hallmarked First Interstate’s approach to doing business since the bank was founded in 1968. For James, serving as the Special Olympics Premier Sponsor is simply an extension of that promise. James has served as Co-director for Special Olympics Montana’s State Summer Games from 2015-2017. He’s also been instrumental in raising more than $5 million in sponsorship support and donations for Special Olympics. “I saw the State Summer Games as an excellent way to meet and connect with highly-engaged members of the community while supporting a truly loved organization,” James said. And James isn’t afraid to get his feet wet to support Special Olympics. During the 2015 Super Grizzly Dip, a polar plunge presented by the Law Enforcement Torch Run that benefits Special Olympics Montana, James dressed up as a chicken. His original task was to cheer on people too “chicken” to jump in, but he put an exclamation point on the event by taking the plunge himself. “Being a part of Special Olympics fills your soul and makes you feel part of something bigger than yourself,” James said.

Despite the challenge

What we oftentimes find from volunteering is that the simple act of giving has more intrinsic value to the giver than receiver. Kara Cook, a veteran Special Olympics volunteer, finds this to be true. When she was in college, Cook worked for Beach Transportation on a Special Needs bus helping kids get to and from school. “The relationships I built with the kids have always stuck with me,” Cook said. “Among other things, they taught me to persevere despite the challenge.” A young man who crossed Cook’s path some time ago embodies this spirt. Isaac Baldry came all the way from Miles City to Missoula to speak to hundreds of people at a Special Olympics dinner and auction. He used his iPad to create an uplifting and witty speech. “You see, Isaac is not only wheelchair-bound, but he is also unable to vocalize his thoughts and feelings verbally,” Cook said. Cook holds on to the strength and tenacity Isaac exhibited that day—and every day. “I’m excited to see him compete this year in the wheelchair races,” she added. Working for a company that not only supports but encourages volunteerism at a local level is something Cook is proud of. “The more you give, the more you get out of life,” she said. “I am grateful that First Interstate Bank recognizes the importance of giving back to the community not only through the Foundation, but through the support of its employees.”

Congratulations, Athletes!

Inspiring all of us—one athlete at a time ransformative is a word often used by athletes and their family members to describe the impact of the Special Olympics Montana mission in their lives. While Special Olympics Montana President & CEO, Bob Norbie, says it is humbling to hear this passionate testimonial from those the organization aims to serve, he believes the transformative appreciation doesn’t begin with staff or volunteers, but rather with donors and sponsors like the Dennis & Phyllis Washington Foundation. “For over 25 years the Washington family has demonstrated their commitment for the Special Olympics Montana mission through their generosity. Their annual support has shaped our organization and made us the movement we are throughout Montana today,” said Norbie. “You can tell it’s more about their heart for people than it is the simple, yet meaningful act of offering charitable support. The entire Washington family, to include the employees of the Washington Companies, are devoted to the idea that they can improve Montana lives by helping people find their voice, discover their identity and feel true inclusion,” he continued. “That’s empowerment and love.” As a Premier Sponsor of the 2017 State Summer Games, the Dennis & Phyllis Washington Foundation create a platform for people with intellectual disabilities to experience the power of sports as they demonstrate courage and joy through competition. In addition to their financial support, employees of the Washington Companies share their time and talent with Special Olympics Montana as volunteers, namely hosting the Family and Friends Barbeque at the Washington Family Grant Creek Ranch. Meanwhile, Phyllis serves as an Honorary Co-Chair of the Summer Games, lending her leadership and energetic presence to the events throughout Missoula. “The State Summer Games are an incredible celebration of the human spirit, showcasing athlete abilities over disabilities, and demonstrating the societal values of inclusion and respect,” said Phyllis Washington. “Through these inspiring Montanans, we can all learn more about our world, each other, and ourselves. We are proud to sponsor such a wonderful event.”

World Down Syndrome Day: Logan Charles left lasting impact on community By Jessica Crowley

Missoula. On this day we would like to celebrate Logan once more, and remind his parents and sister that he will never leave our hearts. He made a huge impact on our Missoula community, and we miss him every day. Logan was a perfect example of what individuals, with or without DS, can live like when they choose to live life to the fullest. He was constantly surrounded by people who just couldn’t get enough of his amazing kindness and compassion, and we were so very blessed to know him. Please help the Montana Down Syndrome Association get the word out to families who may be interested and benefit from knowledge of our organization. It is our goal to unite families and support them in many ways, and we would love to hear from you on how we can better serve our communities. Check out our website (www.mtdsa.org) to learn more of what is going on near your hometown, and contact us for further questions, with ideas and to connect. We’d love to hear from you.

Logan Charles and MacKenzie Morrison

arch 21 is recognized as World Down Syndrome Day because the date 3/21 matches the medical reason for Down syndrome, and extra (or third) 21st chromosome. There may be many different ways to celebrate and observe this day all around the world, but in Montana we want to do our own thing. The Montana Down Syndrome Association is a statewide nonprofit organization that seeks to empower individuals with Down syndrome and support their families in varied ways, by offering financial assistance, a lending library of materials, community outreach, and educational, emotional, and social support and encouragement. Our board is made up of awesome people who care endlessly and volunteer tirelessly. We want to engage our community on this day, and year round, by letting our DS community know that we are behind them all the way and that we believe in them! They are needed and honored in our town and all across Montana. Although we have very many friends statewide whom we enjoy each time we meet, and every day, we’d like to call special attention to one. Recently we lost a darling friend, Logan Charles, a beautiful and outgoing high schoolaged young man who had Down syndrome. He was a ray of sunshine to everyone who knew him, kind, joyful and full of life. Many times MTDSA had the pleasure to cheer Logan on in his events at Special Olympics meets, chat with his loving family, and celebrate with him at the annual Buddy Walk in

We Salute You!

Sport is a powerful force. It can shift the focus from disability to ability, from isolation to involvement. We offer competition in 18 Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Alpine Skiing • Floor Hockey • Aquatics • Golf • Athletics (Track & Field) Gymnastics • Basketball • Kayaking • Bocce • Powerlifting • Bowling Soccer • Cross Country Skiing • Snowboarding • Cycling • Snowshoeing Equestrian • Triathlon

Unified Sports Unified Sports training and competition brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to share in the joy of sports and to celebrate all abilities.

Young Athletes Special Olympics Inclusive Young Athletes is an early childhood sports and educational play program for children aged 2 to 7 years old, with and without intellectual disabilities.

Build Communities of Inclusion Inclusive communities foster a supportive environment for athletes to develop their full potential. To build communities of inclusion in Montana, we provide comprehensive programming in health, education, and athlete leadership.

Unified Champion Schools Unified Strategy for Schools is a multi-faceted, education-based project that uses sports and education programs to activate young people to develop school communities where all youth are agents of change. With sports as the foundation, Unified Champion Schools offer a combination of effective interventions that equip young people with tools and training to create sports, classroom and community experiences that: reduce bullying and exclusion, promote healthy activity and interactions, combat stereotypes and stigmas, eliminate hurtful language in schools, and engage young people in pro-social activities that lead to improved behavior and school climate.

Healthy Athletes The Healthy Athletes initiative provides free health exams and education for Special Olympics athletes. Currently, Special Olympics Montana provides these exams at the State Basketball Tournament.

Athlete Leadership Program The Athlete Leadership Program allows athletes to explore roles beyond competition – such as being an assistant coach, volunteer, committee member, or spokesperson.

Law Enforcement Torch Run The Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR) is the largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics in the world. Since its inception in 1981, the Law Enforcement Torch Run has raised more than half a billion dollars. Montana Torch Run began in 1985 and year-round fundraising events include the Torch Run Relay, Polar Plunges®, Tip-a-Cops, Dodgeball Tournament, World’s Largest Truck Convoy, and more.

Mansch On Montana: Trevor shares the Gold By Scott Mansch, Great Falls Tribune

Athlete Trevor Trainer-Windle competes at the World Winter Games in Austria

revor Trainer-Windle was born with a little less aptitude for learning. And also with a lot more capacity to care. And that’s why he only has one gold medal around his neck these days. Because you see, he gave the other one away in an effort to ease a family’s pain. “There should be more people like him,” says his mother, Coral Trainer. Trevor, 26, is a superstar skier who last month in Schladming, Austria, won gold medals in male advanced slalom and giant slalom at the Special Olympics World Winter Games. When he returned home to Great Falls on March 25, he immediately found Tim and Heather Rohlf of Great Falls. Their son Colton had been a Special Olympics “Unified Partner” and a role model for many, including Trevor. “Giving the medal was more than I was expecting it to be,” Trevor says. “It made me feel happy. I looked up at the sky and said ‘Thank goodness for my friend.’ ” Exactly a year ago on March 25, Colton was killed in a car accident. Trevor was discovered to have a learning disability as a small child. He also was diagnosed with ADD and ADHD. “It was a little hard when he was younger,” Coral says. “Just to learn about everything that was going on with him and coming to grips with that.” She pauses. “Then he got into Special Olympics and it was all good.” Trevor attended Sunnyside Elementary, East Middle School and Great Falls High. He later obtained his GED from Paris Gibson Education Center. “He’s been a good kid,” Coral says. “He loved school, so I never had to worry

about that. And now Special Olympics. He doesn’t miss any time with that either.” Trevor started skiing as a 9-year-old. “It was a rough first year,” Coral recalls. “The second year was a little better and he just took off after that.” Trevor also participates in Special Olympics basketball, track and soccer. Skiing is his main sport. He also holds down a full-time job at Arby’s in Great Falls. “It’s a good franchise. I’ve been there five years,” Trevor says, an everpresent smile on his face. “When I came back (from Austria) all my managers put ‘Welcome Home’ on the drive-thru billboard. That was pretty cool.” Trevor and fellow skier Cedar Vance of Whitefish were the only Montanans to qualify for the Special Olympics World Games. “I was a little nervous about how he was going to place when I saw all the athletes there,” Coral says, referring to the 2,500 at the World Games. She shakes her head and smiles. “I never dreamed we’d be where we are today, with him going to Austria and representing Montana and the United States,” she said. What does Trevor hope to accomplish in the future? “Well, after my brother and sister graduate I want to get a place of my own,” he smiles. Oh, he is asked, has it been difficult to live at home? “Not at all,” Trevor says, shooting his mother a smile. “It’s been an easy road.” The trip to Austria, Trevor says, was awesome. “The scenery, the mountains …” he says. “We got to see castles. And a chocolate factory.” More smiles. What was the best thing about the whole trip? He pauses. Was it returning home to see his family? Trevor’s eyes brighten again. And he describes the feeling when he gave the gold medal to Colton’s folks. “He was one of my special best friends,” Trevor says. “It actually brought them a smile, finally. “It felt good.” Coral smiles easily and often, too. But when asked about Trevor and his recent display of generosity, her lips tremble. “Amazing,” she says. “It’s awesome. He’s the most caring and loving person.” The tears roll down her cheeks. “For everyone to know how much he loved somebody and how good a friends they were, and for him to do that … It was really cool for him to give that to Colton’s mom and dad,” she says. Coral notes her son’s sports career means much, but not as much as simply having the opportunity to compete. “Anybody who’s having a bad day, they need to go watch Special Olympics,” Coral says. “Because that will change everything.”

Hundreds of Special Olympics athletes compete in Bocce during Spring Games By Dillon Kato

said the bocce competition also included unified teams where volunteers played alongside the athletes. “We want to get rid of the concept that this is different and set aside for them and have it be about inclusiveness and all of us instead,” he said. Molly Howard, one of the volunteers who officiated the bocce matches, said she’s helped out with this event for three years, although she’s been involved in Special Olympics longer than that. In addition to keeping the game moving along, Howard and Sue Priddy, the other officials working on her court, kept up a steady stream of encouragement to each of the athletes when they stepped forward to make their throw. “This is my favorite event. You really get to work with the athletes the most on this one,” Howard said. The Spring Games will wrap up Friday with swimming events at the Missoula Family YMCA. The Special Olympics Montana State Summer Games will start on May 16. This is the final year of a three-year period wher e the games will be hosted by Missoula.

Five Valleys Area athletes compete in Bocce at the local spring games

ylan Obresley and Moses Yellowrobe slapped a double high five over their heads each time one of them finished his throw. The 14-year-old teammates from Missoula were just a pair of the around 300 who competed in bocce at Playfair Park on Thursday during the second day of the Special Olympics Five Valleys Area Spring Games. This is Obresley’s first year competing in the Spring Games, and he said although he’s also competing in track and field, bocce is the event he’s the best at. “We get to practice almost every week at school, and I just get better every time,” he said. Ten courts rimmed with PVC piping were laid out in the grass at Playfair Park throughout the morning to accommodate all of the athletes. “Our focus here is to set out to create a championship setting. When they go to these games, they get to feel like the champions,” said Special Olympics area director Jose Diaz. The event, which celebrated its 40th anniversary this year, started Wednesday with opening ceremonies and the track and field competitions in Frenchtown. More than 330 athletes from 26 teams came to Missoula for the games, Diaz said. Each athlete can select multiple events to compete in over the three-day games, with around 300 electing to take part in bocce. Athletes typically spend at least eight weeks practicing for their events, said Evan Lopez, the sports and competition coordinator for the games. “Most of these are year-round teams that are always practicing,” Lopez said. “When they come to compete, they bring some of their family members, their friends, and people to cheer them on.” In addition to two- and four-person teams of Special Olympics athletes, Lopez
