About Special Olympics Montana Our Mission Special Olympics Montana provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Who We Are…
One Team, One Voice, One Vision Special Olympics Montana is an athlete-centered, family-based, volunteerdriven and sponsor-supported movement. In 1970, Special Olympics Montana hosted the first State Summer Games with around 400 athletes. We currently serve nearly 2,400 athletes from 65 Montana communities and 120 local programs who train and compete year-round for Area, Regional, and State Games. Special Olympics Montana has approximately 406 Unified partners who compete as teammates alongside our athletes. Approximately 2-3% or 20,000 to 30,000 Montanans have an intellectual disability. By 2020 SOMT plans to serve at least 3,000 athletes annually. Our athletes range from 8 to 86 years old with an even number of adults and children. More than 140 children participate in the Young Athletes Program. We offer competitions, trainings and health exams to athlete at no charge. Donations received from generous individuals and businesses fund SOMT games and programs. Over 4,000 Montanans annually support the SOMT Mission by giving their time and talent as volunteers.
What We Do…
Transform Lives Through Sports Sports is a powerful force. It can shift the focus from disability to ability, from isolation to involvement. We offer competition in 18 Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Alpine Skiing Aquatics Athletics (Track & Field) Basketball Bocce Bowling Cross Country Skiing Cycling Equestrian Floor Hockey Golf Gymnastics Kayaking Powerlifting Soccer Snowboarding Snowshoeing Triathlon
Unified Sports Unified Sports training and competition brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to share in the joy of sports and to celebrate all abilities. Motor Activities Training Program (MATP) MATP provides comprehensive motor activity and recreational training for people with severe intellectual disabilities or multiple disabilities. MATP places emphasis on training and participation rather than competition. Young Athletes Special Olympics Inclusive Young Athletes is an early childhood sports and educational play program for children aged 2 to 7 years old, with and without intellectual disabilities.
Build Communities of Inclusion
Inclusive communities foster a supportive environment for athletes to develop their full potential. To build communities of inclusion in Montana, we provide comprehensive programming in health, education, and athlete leadership.
Unified Strategy Unified Strategy for Schools is an education and sports-based strategy powered by an engaged youth with and without intellectual disabilities to create communities of acceptance. Nearly 50 schools and more than 21,000 school-age students were part of Unified Strategies in 2015.
Healthy Athletes The Healthy Athletes initiative provides free health exams and education for Special Olympics athletes.
Athlete Leadership Program The Athlete Leadership Program allows athletes to explore roles beyond competition – such as being an assistant coach, volunteer, committee member, or spokesperson.
Law Enforcement Torch Run The Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR) is the largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics in the world. Since its inception in 1981, the Law Enforcement Torch Run has raised more than half a billion dollars. Montana Torch Run began in 1985 and year-round fundraising events include the Torch Run Relay, Polar Plunges®, Tip-a-Cops, Dodgeball Tournament, World’s Largest Truck Convoy, and more.

Missoula Rallies Around Special Olympics Montana State Summer Games
M
by CHELSEA DAVIS issoula County Public Schools students, teachers and staff are some of the biggest cheerleaders for Special Olympics Montana athletes at the Summer Games. For the second of the current three-year rotation, Missoula is hosting Special Olympics Montana’s State Summer Games, May 17-20. Athletes will find a swell of support from MCPS. Each team is adopted by a class, club or group. Those students make posters, decorate the athletes’ hotel doors, make signs and cheer them on at their events. In March, MCPS focused on respect, teaching students about the importance of including everyone, no matter what. Most of all, it’s about supporting the athletes. Last year, the Adams Center’s stands were packed. Locals came out in droves to cheer on the athletes. This year, it’s on to Washington-Grizzly Stadium – “filling that is probably not possible,” laughed MCPS executive regional director Karen Allen, but they’ll try. MCPS is the first school district in the state to jump on board Special Olympics’ Unified Strategy for Schools program. Last year, MCPS was named the Unified Champion School of the Year. “We have a strategy that engages schools, and how we go about it is with three different objectives or components,” said Special Olympics Montana vice president of Unified Strategy LeAnn Dolly-Powell. “The whole school is engaged with opportunities, inclusive sports and youth leadership.” That means getting everyone involved, not just Special Olympics athletes. It’s an effort to use sports and leadership activities as a vehicle to form well-rounded, considerate students. “Our biggest interest was to develop and support the whole idea of inclusion and how we learn together,” Allen said. “We may not all learn in the same way, but we learn together. “I think this year, there was quite a focus on the fact that this is an athletic event, that the kids train and they are doing the sports basically as they were developed. Obviously, when you have Special Olympics athletes, there are some that only can participate in part of a sport, but for the most part the idea is these are athletes and they are participants in sports, just in a different environment and a different venue.” MCPS will transport students, parents and teachers from each elementary, middle and high school to the opening ceremony. “It’s not unusual for different classes to do a field trip to Special Olympics to go cheer on the athletes,” Allen said of the athletic events.

Individual schools each tackle service projects as part of Special Olympics. For example, Big Sky High School’s soccer team hosts a soccer camp every October, inviting Special Olympics athletes from across the state to learn from the Big Sky varsity and junior varsity teams. “The students learn so much from that,” Dolly-Powell said. “For us, we at Special Olympics just see the value in students and student energy and how this can really help bring students of all abilities together. It’s been really inspiring.” Allen agreed that there’s an energy in MCPS and in Missoula that wraps the athletes in support. Special Olympics Montana took note of MCPS’ Graduation Matters initiative, an effort that has now launched statewide to decrease dropout rates and increase graduation rates. “Their initiatives really line up with Special Olympics strategy,” Dolly-Powell said. “We just give them a different vehicle to meet some of those. Through Graduation Matters, students want to belong in school, have that sense of belonging. One way to do that is to be part of something like Special Olympics. It really lined up well, and I think they see that, they see that opportunity to engage in the community as a whole.” School districts across the state participate in Special Olympics, but Dolly-Powell said there’s just something about MCPS. “MCPS is one of those that just stands up and says, ‘We’re in.’ That’s pretty amazing,” she said.

Athletes Rock the House at Dance and Carnival
W
hile competition is central to the Games, athletes kick off their shoes and let their hair down at the Dance and Carnival, which takes place Thursday evening (May 19) at the Adams Center. Athletes, families, friends, and coaches reconnect with peers from the Treasure State for a night of fun. The Adams Center comes alive as athletes get down with their favorite music and challenge the carnival games. “Everyone has a great time—including the volunteers—we like to think of this event as a great way to celebrate the hard work of both the athletes and their coaches,” said Natalie Schaefer, First Security Bank Marketing Project Assistant. First Security Bank generously sponsors the Dance and Carnival, and bank employees organize all festivities.

Johnston-Gleason Finds Her Calling with Special Olympics
RIDE FOR FREE! Special Olympic athletes are always welcome to ride for free at the Missoula Carousel. We wish you good luck in your competitions!
T
by BILL SPELTZ bill.speltz@missoulian.com
here was nothing special about the way Stacey Johnston-Gleason was treated by her high school basketball coach. Back then, it would have been real easy for the special education student to turn her back on athletics. Or at least complain to school administration, putting her coach on the spot. She did neither. “I remember I told my friend Jimmy when we were riding a city bus together,” she recalled. “He said, ‘Why don’t you come join my team!’ I went to his practice and had an excellent time. I joined Special Olympics then and that was in 1985.” Johnston-Gleason found her calling in Special Olympics. It’s a love she’s cultivated for more than three decades -- not just as an accomplished athlete who never met an event she didn’t like, but a member of the International Board of Directors, an International Global Messenger and a member of the World Games Site Selection Committee. Johnston-Gleason will serve as co-emcee of the opening ceremonies with Mick Holien at this year’s State Summer Games on May 18 inside Washington-Grizzly Stadium. It’s the latest chapter in a story that’s truly inspirational. “Being around her when she talks about Special Olympics or when she is competing in Special Olympics, it’s as if it’s her whole life,” said her mother, Ginny Gleason. “It has given her a place where she’s not different and everybody needs that place.”
T
he rewards of competition and camaraderie are just part of JohnstonGleason’s Special Olympics story. Her involvement has also given her a family. She met Ginny and Ron Gleason back in 1997 when they were both single and serving as volunteers during a Special Olympics gathering. Several years later they met again and shared spots on a Special Olympics committee in Spokane. “We just became like instant family, like we had known each other forever,” Johnston-Gleason said. The Gleasons were married in 2002. During the years they became so close with Stacey that she followed them and lived with them in 2011 when they moved to Chester, Mont. “When we moved here I asked if they wanted to adopt me and they said, ‘Well of course!’” said Johnston-Gleason, who at 49 years old is actually four years older than her adoptive mother. In 2014 the Gleasons and their adopted daughter moved to Superior. Johnston-Gleason lives in the downstairs and the Gleasons in the upstairs. “I like the water and the snow,” Stacey said of Superior. “I kayak and we fly fish so it’s nice to have the water.”
Sunday, May 15, 2016 - 17 Missoula last summer but she was unable to golf because of her injury. “It took her away from her favorite sport so she decided to take up cycling and kayaking,” said Missoula Police Sgt. Mark Horner, Stacey’s Special Olympics mentor/friend and her partner for this year’s unified golf event at the UM course. “She’s able to adapt because she’s so darn good and talented. “She’s got the athlete’s mind of doing what you can and never quitting.” Stacey is one of the many athletes that make Special Olympics part of a healthy lifestyle all year long. “It’s not just about showing up at the Games and competing and having fun on that day, which we do,” Ginny Gleason offered. “Our athletes, just like any other athletes, have to train and meet goals and they have to prepare in their sport. “She constantly tells me there is no off-season in Special Olympics.”
J
TOM BAUER, Missoulian Stacey Johnston-Gleason, her service dog Hanai and Mark Horner of the Missoula Police Department stand on the award podium with Johnston-Gleason’s medals for the 200- and 500-meter individual kayak events of the 2015 state Special Olympics Summer Games on Wednesday at Frenchtown Pond. Johnston-Gleason will be co-emcee for opening ceremonies this year with Mick Holien. She will also compete with Horner in golf.
Ginny says the rewards of having Stacey in her family are hard to measure. “We get a million times more than what we have given,” Ginny said.
O
ne of Johnston-Gleason’s most admirable traits is her courage. She admits she’s a little nervous about serving as co-emcee at the upcoming opening ceremonies, but she’s doing it anyway and plans on having fun. Her courage extends into her athletic adventures. She took up downhill skiing to compete in the event in the Special Olympics Winter Games, then injured her knee badly enough that she was forced to sit out. She was intent on competing in the Summer Games when they came to
ohnston-Gleason’s proudest moment in Special Olympics was actually pretty special. Back in 2007 while competing in the World Summer Games in Shanghai, China, she received the Spirit Award. “It’s the highest award you can win in Special Olympics,” Stacey gushed. “It was pretty special. Other people that won it were (volunteer spokespeople) Yao Ming, Vanessa Williams and Nelson Mandela. I was shocked.” Stacey remains down to earth. It’s the participating and competing, not the awards, that make her life enjoyable. “People are put into divisions that are comparable to their times and ability,” Johnston-Gleason noted. “There’s all different abilities in Special Olympics. “The higher ability athletes are going against higher ability athletes. I have gone against the guys in my races so there are enough to compete.” In addition to competing in unified golf with Horner, JohnstonGleason will also participate in the 1K run, 10K run and cycling. And the preparation is just as fun as the actual events, according to Horner. “We’ve gone (golfing) a couple of times already trying to get ready for it and Stacey is hilarious,” said the 59-year-old Horner, who will alternate shots with Johnston-Gleason on the day of competition. “She’s one of those people that ... I put her under every tree that I could. Not that I was trying, that’s just where my shot ended up. On the 8th hole I finally had a good shot and she said to me, ‘Nice shot.’ Then right after that she goes, ‘You know that’s the first time I told you that today!’ She’s quite the character bit she’s a very good golfer, too.” Regardless of whether she earns a spot on the podium, you can bet Johnston-Gleason will be right back at it when the Summer Games are over. She plans on participating in a big event in Florida before the end of the year. Yes, it’s a wonderful existence, indeed. “When I started Special Olympics, I started my life,” Stacey said.
