About the TAEA STAR Purpose and Submission Guidelines
The Texas Art Education Association publishes the newsletter, TAEA Star, four times a year: Pre-Conference, Winter, Spring, and Summer Letters, articles, and comments are welcome. Please include your name, address, phone number, and email address on all correspondence for certification purposes.
The purpose of the STAR is to educate and communicate the association’s activities to its Membership. The viewpoints contained in the Star represent those of the writers and not the Texas Art Education Association. Workshop Schedule
Click on https://www.taea.org/TAEA/conference.asp and then click on the Workshop Schedule link for a full list of the tentative workshop schedule. Please note that updates to the schedule can occur up to the time of the conference. Check on the TAEA Conference App when available for schedule updates during conference. To accommodate all workshops at the 2023 TAEA Conference, they will be hosted at two venues - the Marriott Dallas Allen Convention Center and the Hilton Garden Inn Allen. It is a few minutes drive between the two locations. Also, a shuttle will run continuously between the two locations, but the distance can also be walked in 10 – 15 minutes. To allow additional time, sessions in the Marriott will start on the hour and sessions in Hilton will start on the half hour. Please use care if driving or walking between the two locations.
Conference Fees
Conference fees for TAEA members are shown below. You must be a current member or guest to attend. You can join or renew at taea.org. Note fees shown below do not include the cost for any additional Experience Institutes and Tours you may register
(1) Includes 3 memberships and 1 conference fee.
(2) Pre-Service Students are required to attend the Student Division meeting on Saturday. Also, pre-service students must volunteer for two hours of service while attending conference. Contact Amy Semifero (amy.semifero@pisd.edu, 214-514-9611) to sign up for a time.
(3) This is separate registration and does not include access to the rest of conference.

Additional Notes
If you are paying by Purchase Order or check, please plan to do so early to take into account the time required for your district to process your request. If you are sending in a paper registration, only send in the last page. Don’t forget to select any ticketed workshops, experience institutes and tours. Registration via purchase order or check must be mailed in.
If needed, a sample letter to your administrator is available at https://www.taea.org/TAEA/conference.asp
If registering online, you are only allowed to select 2 ticketed workshops to allow late registrants a chance to participate in them as well. Note that the ticketed workshops are only a subset of the workshops available to attend. There are over 200 workshops to choose from.

During this off-site excursion, you will be able to spend an afternoon with museum educators rotating between a variety of activities. You will go on a staff-led gallery activity focusing on integrating artworks into the art classroom; receive time for exploration of the Dallas Museum of Art's collection and have an art-making opportunity in the museum's studios.

Explore the work of Spanish artist Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746 – 1828) with 2023 Moss/Chumley Artist Award Winner Vicki Meek. Meek is a Dallas-based multi-media artist and curator whose work seeks to reclaim lost memory and cultural context by exploring her African heritage. Meek will lead a discussion of Goya’s role as political commentator, analyzing how the artist responded to political events of his time. During the discussion, you will have the unique opportunity to view first edition prints by Goya pulled from the museum’s storage vault specifically for this workshop. Finally, you will create your own work with a hands-on project designed by Meek and inspired by her artistic process.

Come explore the art collection and pop-up projects on an interactive field trip. “NorthPark Center is renowned for making museum-quality art accessible to all by showcasing internationally acclaimed 20th and 21st century art in all of its public spaces. Nearly 50 artworks are on view from the Nancy A. Nasher and David J. Haemisegger Collection.” Your tour will be led by Christina van Hamersveld, RISD Visual Arts Magnet teacher with 19 years experience. You will interact with the current exhibition and learn how to design your own hands-on art activities that connect to the public artwork in your area. Our tour bus will transport you to the NorthPark Center and guides will walk you through the public art collection as you create through hands-on activities and discussion. You will learn how to develop free public art field trips for your students.
EXPERIENCE INSTITUTE and TOUR: Full Circle Studios/ FCS Clayworks

Teachers will be able to float around the studio to different stations where they can explore the following:
• Kiln repair and maintenance: firing schedules for the classroom, tour of the kiln, how to take care of the most crucial machine in the studio. We will be providing resources for parts and maintenance as well as the opportunity to ask our kiln techs anything.
• Teaching clay off the wheel. Hand-building projects for all classroom levels. Project ideas and plans. Hands-on tutorials in the studio for different levels of work.
• Wheel-thrown work: a primer. Teachers will have the opportunity to play and create at the wheel. An instructor will be leading the session, there to answer all questions.
• Stocking the classroom: What kind of clay does their program need? What kind of glaze suits their students best? What do they need for their specific classroom and age group? How to shop for and ship supplies (grouping shipments within the district, budget, and logistics for the clay classroom, how to work with what you’ve got.) Mixed glazes vs. commercial: pros and cons.
• Keep what you make: any work that teachers want to keep can either be shipped to them with their first clay order of the year through Trinity or we can arrange shipping on an individual basis.
