Foreword It gives me great pleasure to welcome this exhibition and performance by the Korean Artists Association (KAA), an annual showcase that has now become a regular feature of the Korean Cultural Centre UK’s calendar. Each year their offering continues to evolve and we are happy to provide a platform for these artists to present their works. The theme of this year’s exhibition is ‘Collaboration’, describing both the creative and experimental influences of the artists as well as the exploration of new territories that each chooses to explore. This year’s programme promises to be especially vibrant as it also includes the performance, conference and workshop. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have made this exhibition possible and express my warmest congratulations to the artists for producing this fine body of work. I wish the KAA continued success, not just with this exhibition but also their future programmes as well.

A presentation of The Korean Artists Association UK. First of all, I would like to thank all the members of KAA for their excellent works in promoting Korean arts, music and culture in UK. This is one of the main aims of KAA, but personally I believe one of the most important purposes of KAA is to bring about ‘unity’ among artists in UK. It is in this spirit of 'unity' that we have all worked to bring you in ' /Collaboration’. Such harmony between Korean artists can only strengthen the ties between Korea and UK. Then, I would thank the director Mr. Kabsoo Kim and the Korean Cultural Centre UK for their generous permission to use this most convenient venue in Central London. Finally, I must conclude by thanking this year's sponsors for their kind support and encouragement without which also this event could not go forward. My entry for this exhibition is based on the Eastern theory of Yin/Yang and the Five Elements of Wood, Water, Metal, Fire and Earth. I was interested in interactions of the five elements of which there are two cycles; the generating cycle and overcoming cycle. I explored the relationship between the two elements wood and metal which the theory states are in conflict.

Cell diary: videos display with sound - 2mins, shown on continuous loop
My work explores the visualization of the invisible. The biological cell is my subject, understood as an unseen reality of one’s own being. I draw and record a cell image everyday to capture the character of my constantly changing biological self. Cell diary video records through the bottom of bottles are the intensifying process of observation.

White Blessing consists of pure and innocent confession for the one. The painter and composer present the earnest wishes with literal, metaphorical and musical juxtaposition. These artists have applied Korean traditions to contemporary fine art and textiles, taking inspiration from Minwha (Korean traditional folk painting) Ch’aekkori. They combine Minhwa’s absence of shadow with modern elements (varied perspectives and focuses, use of geometric shapes). Eunjung’s paintings combine mundane objects representing nostalgic places in our collective mind, while Sookhee’s elegant textile designs come with a modern twist. This map of london was inspired during obversation of Korean traditional souvenir, bozagi (a patched wrapping cloths) and Mondrian's pattern design and by developing these two different yet interestingly similar designs from different continents and time periods. Using these patterns, the designers developed their pattern to a friendly daily product.

Miniature Sleep is a three year alliance of four independent artists, Kihyun Kim, Brian Johnson, Eurim Kim and Clarence Chan, who share the combined interest in cross-cultural contemporary artworks. Their collaborative work mixes traditional art and design practices with emerging digital technologies that manifest in the Mandala, a powerful sacred symbol that celebrates harmony, unity and universal well being. Mother Bless The Child That's Got Her Own represents the mothers' pure blessing for their children so they can build a new life after their immigration to the UK. The project aims to show the mentality and psychology of mothers living abroad; in particular their feelings of loneliness, confusion, conflict and rupture caused by their separation from their motherland. Mothers' psychology and blessings have been expressed with literal and metaphorical juxtaposition in photographs.

Sung Hwoa Gong Swimming Narwhal (2013) Animation
This animation was commissioned for a Greenpeace event in London, which highlighted the need to protect the animals of the Arctic. This piece shows a Narwhal whale formation swimming together, gradually hinting at a heart shape by the end.

History means interpretation. This is interpreted differently depending on the visual perception of the spatial relationships of objects. The collaboration – Photography and Painting is re-interpretation based on the historical fact ‘The six martyred ministers’ – Sayuksin. This wishes an approach to allow access for the variable spiritual heritage and a question about tolerance of it by Korean artists in London.

About KAA UK
The Korean Artists Association UK (KAA UK) was established in 1997. The members of the Korean Artists Association are professional Korean Artists who are resident in the UK as first or second generation migrants. Each of the individual artists has done much to represent and promote Korean cultural awareness from within their identity as Koreans here in the UK. The KAA also includes Associate members including non-Korean professional artists and others associated with Korean art and culture here in the UK. Membership 1. Ordinary Member Professionals in the arts or art-related activities who have been, or intend to be, resident in the U.K. for more than a year. 2. Associate Member People engaged in the arts or art-related activities who do not meet the above criteria. 3. KAA Friend At the committee’s discretion, people not meeting any of the above criteria may be invited to join as KAA Friends. KAA Friends contribute to the activities and interests of the Association.
