DIRECTOR NOTES
Unfortunately, war is always topical. Each week, month, year, decade, century, conflicts arise across the globe, some new, some historical, all with the basis in economic exploitation. Mark Ravenhill is one of the infamous “in-yerface” UK theatre writers of the 90’s. He wrote Shoot. Get Treasure. Repeat in the wake of 9/11, the 2003 invasion of Iraq and consequent ‘War on Terror’. The core theme of this series of short plays is fear of the other: the notion of ‘us and them’ fueled by the rhetoric and fear campaigns of politicians and the media. Ravenhill brilliantly juxtaposes and interrogates the multiple perspectives and experiences of war with both gravity and grim humor.
“You are being bombed. I wake up. You are being bombed. I shower. I prepare fruit. You are being bombed. I juice. I turn on the television and you are being bombed again. The worse so far they tell me.”

PLAY 6. THE ODYSSEY. A group of American soldiers get ready to leave Iraq. WARNING:
I have, as I always do, taken risks and pushed these works beyond the pages. As both a director and human being, I can’t help but feel compelled to meet the actors and audiences with the same level of intensity and honesty as the complicated society/world we live in. This is not just entertainment. It is a commitment. The 3rd year actors have been taken through a lengthy and intense process, confronted with material and knowledge that is often outside their lived experiences. It is only fair that we as creatives and audiences meet these plays head on in the same modus as they have been written, with rigor, abandonment and risk…
