Going Broke It seems prices keep going up, minimum wage is going up, taxes are going up, crime is going up, Terrorism is going up, and unemployment is going up but wages seem to be going down, oil prices are down, their downsizing our Military, President’s approval rating is going down, and trust in our Government is at an all time low. The future does not look bright.

People wonder all the time how President Obama got elected not just once but twice. Some people wanted change and thought he was the answer but that didn’t work out. The Republican Candidate was not much better but we sure wish now he was elected. Luckily the Republican’s are stacked with Candidates and any of them would make an excellent President, while the Democrats don’t have anyone.

During these scary financial times, California decided to raise Minimum Wage again. This kills the small businesses.

Big companies like McDonalds have already started to do more things on the computer instead of using employees.

Minimum Wage was set for High School Students, College Students, and people starting out, it was not made for a career.

There are some businesses doing great in Taft but there are others that are barely hanging on. Please vote smart in the next election. If you go to another Country without permission you go to their Prison. In most other Countries you can’t buy a home there and get any of the privileges their Citizens do. In our Country you can get free medical, college, social security even though you never contributed, food stamps, home buyer programs, section 8 for renters, and so much more to drain our American Tax Payers. The Syrian Refugees that just arrived to American are getting free food, housing, and disability. In most of the pictures or videos they are using smoking, so us taxpayers are also paying for their cigarettes.

We have to support our Taft Businesses now more than ever.

Did you Christmas Shop in Taft? Did you buy gift certificates to our great shops and restaurants or the Fox Theatre? Did you buy jewelry from Acme Jewelry, get your friend’s hair done at Bangs and Tangles, new pants at Blue Jeans and Bling, new shirt at Marty’s, work boots at Shaws Western, new ear rings at Eye Kandi, have a shirt made at Rec Shop, a purse at Personal Style, a table at Westside Furniture, home decor from Old’s Cool, a book at Ben’s Books, did you buy your friends a coffee at Black Gold Brewing Company, get your friends a beer at Art’s Corner, or get a new TV at Pearseys. If you Shopped Taft you helped pay for our street lights, Taft PD, Kern County Fire Department, Halls Ambulance, roads resurfaced, City Crews, supported your neighbor, helped businesses sponsor the Little League, Rec, etc.

Everyone is so worried about our homeless around town. If you noticed our homeless people are not out looking for a job, they are usually either drunk, stoned, or tweaking. I’ve offered several of them rides to the Bakersfield Rescue Mission and none of them would go. The Bakersfield Rescue Mission offers all kinds of services to help someone get back on their feet, the catch is the person has to be sober. I don’t want to sound heartless but we have a problem not just in Taft but everywhere. People do not want to work, they want to steal or get handouts. Next time you see someone begging for money, give them direction to the Bakersfield Rescue Mission. If you want to give, give to the Bakersfield Rescue Mission and other Christian places that actually help and change lives. I know times are hard around Taft, I’m not talking about a family down on their luck, I’m talking about the drunk guy hanging around Center Street, the guy laying on Rails to Trails, the guy that stole from Albertsons again and it was not food- it was alcohol, the crazy tweaker guy living with the sweet Grandma two houses down that is bleeding her to death but she is to nice and still sees the sweet boy from 25 years back.

These people are ruining our Country. Happy New Year.

Higher Royalties for Drilling on Federal Lands Don’t Make Sense

By Merrill Matthews Convinced that there is more money to be extracted from the oil and natural gas industry, liberals and environmentalists are urging the Obama administration to increase the royalties energy production companies must pay when drilling on federal lands.

Two House Democrats, Raul Grijalva and Alan Lowenthal, have asked the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to increase the royalty from 12.5 percent to 18.75 percent, which is the rate for drilling offshore.

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton agreed, calling for “additional fees and royalties from fossil fuel extraction [to be used] to protect the environment.”

The 12.5 percent royalty for onshore oil and natural gas production has remained constant since the 1920s.

However, many states impose much higher royalties for drilling on state-owned land. Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and Montana, for example, all impose a 17 percent royalty fee.

New Mexico and North Dakota have a 19 percent fee. Texas charges 25 percent.

So, the argument goes, if many of the states are imposing higher royalties, why shouldn’t the federal government increase its rates and reap billions of dollars in extra revenue?

But the question overlooks the most obvious problem: If drilling on federal lands is such a financial windfall for oil and gas producers, then why has that drilling declined since Barack Obama became president?

According to the Congressional Research Service (CRS), crude oil drilling on federal land extracted 1.77 million barrels per day in 2009. After declining for several years, it returned to 1.78 million barrels per day in 2014. However, as a percentage of total U.S. crude oil production, oil from federal land declined from 33.8 percent of the total in 2009 to 21.4 percent in 2014.

Meanwhile, crude oil production on nonfederal land increased from 3.47 million barrels per day in 2009 to 6.55 million barrels per day by 2014.

For natural gas, production on federal land fell from 5.38 trillion cubic feet in 2009 to 3.52 trillion cubic feet in 2014.

In the same time, gas production increased from 16.2 to 23.13 trillion cubic feet on nonfederal land.

If federal royalties are such a bargain, why don’t drillers -- who are supposedly only interested in profits -- not realize they could pocket billions if they drilled more on federal lands?

The answer is the challenge of dealing with the federal government.

In 2006, the BLM received 10,492 applications for permits to drill (APD) for oil and gas. But in 2009, Obama’s first year in office, BLM only received 5,257. Over the next six years, APD levels remained similar.

One reason for the decline was the average of 307 days it took for BLM to approve or deny an application in 2011, though the agency was able to shorten that to 194 days in 2013. But that’s still 194 days.

Compare that to applications for state drilling. As CRS said, “crude oil and gas development on federal lands takes place in a wholly different regulatory framework than that of development on private lands.” That’s an understatement.

State agencies sometimes approve permits within 10 business days of submission, according to CRS. That’s 10 days for some states versus 194 days for the federal government. In an industry where time is money, 184 extra days is a lot of time -- and money.

So if environmentalists and liberals were successful in raising the federal royalty rate on oil and gas production, it wouldn’t result in a financial windfall for the federal government. It would simply drive more drilling operations to state and private lands.

Instead of the industry getting an unfair break, the current discounted federal royalty rate may be the only inducement to lure drillers into putting up with the regulations Washington imposes.

Miller Time Hi Everyone, The tide of change is always with us. In my lifetime it seems, that give or take every seven years, something happens to cause change in your life whether it be personal, employment related, or public happenings that affect you. If you have ever had the occasion to visit the Urgent Care, hopefully you had the chance to meet and be treated by Dr. Washington. He is one of those rare doctors that not only diagnose you correctly he tells you like it is in a compassionate and caring manner. I have seen him a couple of times over the years and he was spot on for me. Like everyone, I thought he’d stay forever just like we thought we’d always have a hospital. Well, after eleven years Doc Washington has decided to make a change that best suits him and his family. The board of the Health Care District has worked very hard to try to convince him to stay, offering incentives and to work with him on any issues he had. After talking it over with his wife and family, he has decided to pull back to Bakersfield where he lives and will practice at another clinic. By the number of comments on Facebook, his leaving was not because he wasn’t beloved or respected for sure. It is a sad thing for our community but I have been involved on many boards, commissions, and the council to understand that professionals mostly make monetary decisions and what they perceive as quality of life issues for not remaining in our community. I appreciate that he was here eleven years, we got more from him than I expected. The main concern for the district is to not have an interruption in service to our community. They are searching for a doctor to replace him. You have to understand that any doctor at the urgent care is not a primary care provider

and cannot see patients on an outpatient basis. It is not an emergency room either, but is the best service the district can provide short of building and maintaining a hospital which is not on the horizon for the immediate future. The other thing most folks don’t realize is that the urgent care is subsidized by the district meaning it is not self supporting financially. The district is very cognizant of its responsibility to the taxpayers and the board members should be given a lot of credit for their service, commitment, and diligence to provide the best care they can to the community.

Well Taco Bell has been a big hit and so has the opening of the new sports bar “The Bank” on North Street. What I appreciate about these ventures is that they have looked at Taft, saw a need, and then followed through with their instincts. Both enterprises have opened their bank accounts quite generously to provide very clean, modern, and up to date facilities. The reception to their openings has been very good; mostly they are new and different and we hope their sustainability will last a very long time. That of course puts pressure on the other eating establishments in town to put their best foot forward to reward their customers with the same kind of loyalty, service, convenience, and quality as these two new establishments. Competition is always good for everyone.

7 get so caught up in life that we sometimes don’t appreciate the really good things Taft has to offer; isn’t that why you and I live here ?? There are so many things going on in Taft, it is hard for anyone to say there is nothing to do or that it is boring. What happens is that we get out of sync and habit and don’t go back to those places and things that we enjoyed because we moved on to what we thought was better or new.

Guess what, those places and things are still there waiting for you to come back. Give’m another try, if they are still in business they are doing something right. Re-Visit Taft Again, you might find everything you want right here.

It is hard to ignore what is going on in the world. Luckily for us locally, so far, we are immune to what is going on, but it doesn’t mean something can’t happen. Be diligent in your lives; look out not only for yourself but your neighbors.

Sometimes you have to get involved to do what is right to help protect us all. Live in Taft, don’t just reside here.

Asian Experience, our local Thai Food and Pizza Parlour, is one of Taft’s favorite places to eat mostly for the unique food offerings they serve. They aren’t into breakfast food that is quite popular in Taft, but they have found their niche.

Now they are going to get some national recognition. Guy Fiari from the “Diner, Drive-Ins and Dives” TV show on the food network made his way to Taft while doing some filming in Bakersfield to have dinner at Asian. It was a casual dinner with friends but he enjoyed it so much that they scheduled a segment of filming at the restaurant this past week and it should air in the next couple of months. Liberty Under Fire Cruz vs. Rubio and the Constitution

D The December 15, 2015, Republican Presidential Debate featured a stark clash between the only two Hispanics running from either party, both also the sons of immigrants to this country. A successful bid would make either our first Hispanic president. But on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and the Bill of Rights they are on opposite ends, one opposing the other supporting.

A question with respect to the extremely controversial, largely on constitutional grounds, NDAA should have been a top news item in the presidential debate for three reasons: first, it had just been approved by both houses of Congress and was then on the President’s desk for his signature, second, a new president (presumably one of the debaters) would inherit the power to detain indefinitely and without trial American citizens he or his military suspected was a terrorist threat, and finally, all this in light of the ISIS terrorist attack in San Bernardino by one of our own. It wasn’t. Amazingly no commentator in any of the debates has asked about the NDAA. It would not have come up at all had not Senator Marco Rubio accused rival Senator Ted Cruz of having voted against it every year since its inception in 2011 and accurately assumed that Cruz would veto it were he the president. Senator Cruz responded, “I oppose the federal government having the authority to detain U.S. citizens permanently with no due process.

I have repeatedly supported an effort to take that out of that bill.” Rubio countered, “If you’re an American citizen and you decide to join up with ISIS, we’re not going to read you your Miranda rights. You’re going to be treated as an enemy combatant, a member of an army attacking this country.” Senator Rand Paul attempted several times to have input in support of the Cruz position but was not allowed.

The Taft Independent So why is this an issue? It is the word “suspected.” In the United States you are presumed innocent until proven guilty. And there is the damage to the Bill of Rights.

In the NDAA is a provision authorizing the military, under presidential authority, to arrest, kidnap, detain without trial, and hold indefinitely, American citizens thought to “represent an enduring security threat to the United States.” Simply stated it defied Habeas Corpus (your constitutional right not to disappear at the hand of government) Article I, Section 9, the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 (preventing the military from having a law enforcement function in the United States), and essentially gutted large portions of the Bill of Rights especially amendments 4, 5, and 6 with secondary damage to 1, 2 and possibly 8. It is the single most dangerous law passed by Congress in U.S. History. No freedom or constitutional advocate should be supportive of punishment without trial.

Many seem not to understand that a non-specific definition of terrorism, such as that noted above, can easily be turned into a revolving definition of terrorism and used to wipe out either an opposing party or philosophy. Imagine being arrested, kidnapped, and secretly shipped to Guantanamo Bay (or some other undisclosed location) for defending the Constitution. Such is possible under the NDAA. Republican President Richard Nixon used the IRS to persecute his political enemies in the 1970’s, as has Democratic President Barack Obama in the last seven years. Neither political party is without fault on this issue.

Perhaps Tea Party Senator Ted Cruz said it best when he proudly told his constituents: “Today I voted against the National Defense Authorization Act. I am deeply concerned that Congress still has not prohibited President Obama’s ability to indefinitely detain U.S. citizens arrested on American soil without trial or due process. The Constitution does not allow President Obama, or any President, to apprehend an American citizen, arrested on U.S. soil, and detain these citizens indefinitely without a trial.” We agree and that is why the National Defense Authorization Act of 2015 is still dangerous, still unconstitutional and still unacceptable in a free country!!

and Democrat President Barack Obama, promised to veto it, then reneged on the promise and signed it. It largely nullifies the Bill of Rights for those accused.

No freedom or constitutional advocate should be supportive of punishment without trial. In the 2016 presidential race only Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, from either major political party, have voiced opposition to it. Presumably all other candidates favor it. Senator Rubio consistently voted for it and is probably the most outspoken 2016 presidential contender, from either major political party, advocating it. As such it is unlikely that, if elected president, he could fulfill the oath of office to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
