Oil Falls to 5-Year Low

Oil tumbled to the lowest level in more than five years on speculation a global supply glut that’s driven crude into a bear market will continue through the first half of 2015.

West Texas Intermediate fell 2.1 percent while Brent slipped 2.6 percent, reversing early gains spurred by an escalating conflict in Libya. Fires have been extinguished at three of six tanks at Es Sider, Libya’s largest oil port, which were set ablaze after an attack by militants, said National Oil Corp. spokesman Mohamed Elharari. Crude also fell as the dollar climbed to a two-year high against the euro, reducing the appeal of raw materials as a store of value.

Futures plunged 46 percent this year, set for the biggest annual drop since 2008, as the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries resisted supply cuts to defend market share in response to the highest U.S. output in three decades. Trading was below average amid Christmas and New Year holidays.

“We’re looking at a significant supply-demand surplus through the first half of 2015,” Tim Evans, an energy analyst at Citi Futures Perspective in New York, said by phone. “The problems in Libya and any reduction in the growth of U.S. production will only help limit the surplus, but it’s not going away anytime soon.”

WTI Futures WTI for February delivery fell $1.12 to close at $53.61 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It was the lowest settlement since May 1, 2009. The volume of all futures traded was 32 percent below the 100-day average at 2:58 p.m.

Brent for February settlement slipped $1.57 to end the session at $57.88 a barrel on the London-based ICE Futures Europe exchange. It’s the lowest close since May 15, 2009.

Volume was 45 percent below the 100-day average. The North Sea oil closed at $4.27 premium to WTI, down from $4.72 on Dec. 26.

Libyan crude production has slumped since a civil war that began in 2011 when Muammar Qaddafi was overthrown after a 42-year rule. The country pumped 580,000 barrels a day in November, down from about 1.59 million at the end of 2010, Bloomberg figures show.

Libya’s Breakdown The tank fires started on Dec. 25 after the Petroleum Facilities Guard gave Islamist militias an ultimatum before air strikes and the rebels fought back. Es Sider has a storage capacity of 6.2 million barrels, the National Oil Corp. said. Libya’s third-largest port of Ras Lanuf was also halted this month by fighting.

The country pumped 352,000 barrels a day on Dec. 25, Elharari said.

Global Balance “The loss of a couple hundred thousand barrels from Libya will have a minimal impact on the global supply balance,” Bob Yawger, director of the futures division at Mizuho Securities USA Inc. in New York, said by phone. “There’s about 2 million barrels a day of excess production right now, so this will just tighten things a little.”

Prices tumbled on Dec. 24 after an Energy Information Administration report showed that U.S. crude and fuel inventories surged the prior week. The EIA, the Energy Department’s statistical arm, is projected to report on Dec. 31 that supplies of crude, gasoline and distillate fuel, a category that includes diesel and heating oil, gained last week, according to a Bloomberg survey of analysts.

“There should be big builds in U.S. product inventories this week,” Evans said. “There’s not a lot of scheduled refinery maintenance right now and demand hasn’t been strong.”

Fuel Prices Gasoline futures decreased 5.59 cents, or 3.7 percent, to $1.4528 a gallon, the lowest settlement since April 2009. Diesel slipped 5.88 cents, or 3.1 percent, to close at $1.8491. It was the lowest settlement since Oct. 8, 2009.

Gas Prices Continue Fall

Average retail gasoline prices in California have fallen 8.5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.49/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 10,526 gas outlets in California. This compares with the national average that has fallen 5.8 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.05/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in California during the past week, prices yesterday were 111.7 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 28.2 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 39.4 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 124.2 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

“The light at the end of the tunnel is dimming as gasoline prices have nearly caught up with the drop in crude oil prices,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy.

“Last week saw a rally in oil prices Wednesday, before caving again Thursday, then rallying again Friday- a sign that perhaps we’ve seen a bottom in oil prices, and perhaps thus a bottom in gasoline prices as well.”

“We’ll certainly be watching the price of oil during this shortened trading week, and if oil fails to continue declining, it’s likely that it won’t get much better at the pump. And while that may sound negative, it certainly has been a great ride for motorists: the national average stands some $1.24/ gas lower than a year ago, and just one in 20 stations has a price over $2.50/gal, while last year saw 100% of stations over that level.

The bright spot remains, however, for diesel consumers. Diesel prices have eclipsed the decline in gasoline prices, with prices averaging a drop twice that of gasoline in the last week. Diesel now sells for an average of $2.89/gal and will fall another 10-25c/gal in the next few weeks,” DeHaan noted.

Some quick gasoline price statistics as of Monday: • Missouri has the lowest state average in the country; at $1.75 today, it is one of 26 states averaging under $2.00/gal.

• There is only one state averaging above $3.00/gal today: Hawaii ($3.324).

• In the lower 48 states, California has the highest average at $2.498, followed by New York at $2.494.

• Every state has a lower average today than the same day last year.

Michigan, at $1.911 today, has seen the biggest drop from the same day last year, down $1.40 from its January 19, 2014 average.

• Only two states have averages less than $1.00 lower than last year: Alaska (86cts lower) and Hawaii (71cts lower).

• There are only three states that don’t have a single station reporting a price under $2.00/gal: 1. Vermont (lowest station reporting at $2.09) 2. Alaska (lowest station reporting at $2.53) 3. Hawaii (lowest station reporting at $2.86) • Of the 48 states (including Washington DC) with at least one station reporting a price under $2.00/gal, 42 of them have over 15 stations reporting under that threshold.

• 22 states don’t have a single station above $3.00/gal: AZ, ID, IN, IA, KS, MA, MI, MS, MO, MT, NE, NM, ND, OK, OR, RI, SC, SD, VT, VA, WV, WY gallon yesterday, according to Heathrow, Florida-based AAA, the nation’s biggest motoring group.

The dollar strengthened against the euro amid concern elections in Greece risk severing the nation’s financial bailout agreement. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index (BCOM) climbed 0.2 percent today, while the Bloomberg Commodity Index dropped 0.4 percent.

Algerian Call Algerian Energy Minister Youcef Yousfi called on OPEC to cut output to boost prices, the Associated Press reported. The group needs to “intervene to correct the imbalance and cut production to bring up prices and defend the income of its member states,” Yousfi said, according to the AP. OPEC decided at a Nov. 27 meeting to maintain its collective output quota at 30 million barrels a day. It pumped 30.56 million a day in November, exceeding that target for a sixth straight month, a Bloomberg survey of companies, producers and analysts shows.

In California, Crime Pays

Increase in local crime blamed on Passage of Prop. 47

By Bill Taft You can thank our Government for our Crime The crime wave is back. The crime is not just in Taft, it is everywhere. Luckily for Taft it is not as bad here as it is everywhere else. There have been several burglaries recently. As bad as it is, Taft is lucky we are not experiencing more serious crimes like in other towns. Taft PD and the Kern County Sheriff Department are working hard but our California laws work against them.

People seem to blame the cops but they are also victims in all this. A few years ago California passed AB109 Prison Realignment. A few months ago California passed Prop 47.

Both of these basically give our thieves a get out of jail pass over and over again. People on Parole use to be afraid of going back to prison but not anymore.

They know now that if they do go back to prison it will not be for long. If you actually do hear of someone getting 10 years in prison they will do maybe half of that, plus they will get credit for the time they did waiting for the trial. Every town has more burglaries before Christmas but this year with these new laws the crime is still going strong.

When the cops arrest someone they have lots of paperwork. When they do a burglary report they really have lots of paperwork. All this paperwork takes them off the street while they complete it. Everyone watches CSI and the other shows and thinks that is how things work, it’s not at all. Everyone cop wants nothing more than to catch the bad guy but the way Cops really work is a lot different than the actors on CSI. If you read the Taft PD arrests every week you usually see the same names over and over. The Cops would love to see these criminals stay in jail or prison just as much as you. Some people like to blame the two Taft prisons for these crimes. Since the prisons have been here the Cops can tell you they could count on one hand how many inmate families have actually moved here. Just because a family has a bad apple in prison does not mean the family is bad. Our crime is basically from the same tweakers that have been doing it for years except now their kids and bad relatives have joined them. We do have some new bums in town that have been causing problems also.

Taft is a caring community and that is why the bums are here. It is nice to help our Taft people that are down on their luck but not the drunk tweaker that is bothering people at the gas pumps that got ran out of another town. We need to take care of our own and these others coming into town causing problems deserve no love and need to go.

Kern County did not vote for these crazy new laws.

We need to continue to vote smart because California is going downhill fast. We need to leave out porch lights on. If you have an alley, leave alley lights on. Install motion lights and other exterior lights to really light up the neighborhood.

Get lights that light up the entire area, unlike lights on Rails to Trails that are bright but only light up a small area.

Look outside when the dogs are barking. If you see anything suspicious call the cops. Remember just because you think it is suspicious it may not be. The criminals have rights also (sadly), so the Cops can’t always do everything you want them too. Talk to your neighbors and let each other know when you’re coming and going. Some pages on Facebook are a great way to communicate but remember the thieves are on these pages too. All Businesses stay united with the Taft Chamber and Downtown Business Association. Watch out for each other, support our Cops, and let our Cops do their job. Taft is still the best town around; don’t let our Government ruin it.

TUHS Offers Free SAT Prep Course Taft Union High School is offering a free, 20-hour class to students who want to prepare for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Many colleges require applicants to take the SAT as part of the admissions process.

Similar classes in Bakersfield cost between $100 and $150. Participants may receive the book, The Official SAT Study Guide. Students may use the book, valued at $21.99, to continue to prepare for the test after the course ends. Refreshments will be provided during all sessions.

Also, several scholarships awarded through the TUHS local scholarship program give special consideration to students who have above-average SAT scores. Seniors received more than $200,000 in scholarships at the annual Honors Night last May. Instructors are English teacher Jim Carnal and math teacher Josh Tofte.

Classes begin Saturday, Jan. 31, and end on Monday, March 2. Classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Saturday, Jan 31; 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3 and 10, Wednesday, Feb.18, and Tuesday, Feb.24; 8 to 1:30 p.m.

All classes will meet in the IRC. The SAT test will be administered at Taft High on Saturday, March 14. Registration for the test costs $52.50 and the deadline to sign up is Feb. 13.

The fall class averaged 50 students who improved their tests scores an average of 219 points, Tofte said.

Miller Time HI Everyone, The people living on the Westside are now seeing the effects of the passage of Proposition 47 on the ballot this past November.

The basic tenets of the proposition are that the threshold for property crimes from a misdemeanor to a felony rose from $50 of value to $950 in value per incident. When the crime is reported and the thieves are caught, if the value is less than $950, the officer has no choice but to issue a citation and release the perpetrator.

The next day they steal again and get caught, if the value is under $950, then another cit and release, and it can keep going. The only way to throw them in jail is if they don’t show up in court, then it is up to the court what to do with them. The other thing is if they were, say seen on a security camera but they have already gotten rid of the goods, your goods, where does restitution come to play ?? I don’t know who thought Prop 47 up, but if it was intended to relieve the pressure on our jails, that may have worked, but it has embolden thievery all over the state. More and more unwanted folks are coming on to your property, mostly to help feed an ugly habit, but what if you or your children are at home and there is a confrontation ?? The Police are being told when they catch these folks they are telling cops “Prop 47, Prop 47 “. Guess they know their rights. Our legislators apparently don’t think that $950 amounts to much but it is our $950 that we have worked hard for and now we have to go out and spend another $950. What if they steal a family heirloom, irreplaceable, no value attached but sentimental value, what then ??

The real creeps in this whole mess are the people who buy this stolen property; “oh, I didn’t know it was stolen “, for pennies on the dollar, when they know the person they are buying it from would never own something like what’s presented to them. They are the ones who should be hit with big time penalties, because they are encouraging these drug

I have a thought on the folks traveling to the Middle East to hook up with ISIS; then they want to come back to this country to bring that brand of terrorism with them.

We need to declare war with ISIS, if you go there to fight, US citizen or not, there is no coming back home. Syria and Iraq are not vacation spots we desire to go to, and if you can’t prove you have legitimate reasons to be there, sorry.

These folks are using the freedoms, which they enjoy in this country, against us in the name that they have rights. These folks are fanatics and they don’t play by any rules and will use any means they can to try to destroy this country. If you think it is so bad here, Ok go, but you give up your citizenship, period. By the way, with all the fighting going on where are the ISIS fighters getting the ammo for their weapons ?? Shouldn’t we and other countries be zeroing in on the manufactures that are producing an oversupply of ammo and disrupt the supply chain that is feeding these terrorists ?? It is known that ISIS is selling stolen oil reserves to support their cause at a tune of a million dollars a day. Aren’t we sophisticated enough to ferret out who is buying this oil and bringing down some harsh penalties on these players ??

Whose feelings are we going to hurt when we get tough, but who really cares, this is an all out war by a cause that wants total world domination and destruction and who wants to pound us all back into the stone age. Sorry, I know this is a home town column but, what is going on all around us can’t help to interrupt our daily lives in one way or another.

There are no easy answers but we need strong leadership to help guide us through what will be a long hard expensive struggle.

When I was younger I took a many a job where the wage was at the minimum with no benefits, and were all part time. I never expected to remain at that low end job nor did I expect it to be a living wage for a family. It was a start that gave me experience, skills, and maturity to where I could move up or on to something better while I supplemented my job experience with education in higher learning settings. In all those jobs, none of those employers expected me to stay, because those jobs were entry level. So the debate rages on, what is a fair minimum ?? All I know is that $15 is not a fair wage for an entry level, part time, no skills, and non educated person. Employers can’t afford it; the economy can’t afford it; and if you throw mandated benefits on top none of us can afford it. See where you stand and let your legislators know your feelings.

I want to give a shout out to the neighbors helping to keep the weeds down at the house on Church and Pilgrim.

Thanks for living in Taft, not residing here. The City is working to secure the property through a tax default sale.

Athelete of the Week January 30, 2015

Reagan Hamilton Reagan Hamilton is an all-around great athlete and student. She excels on the court and in the classroom.

She has been instrumental to the success of the Lincoln 7th grade girls basketball team. We recently had a tournament this past weekend and Reagan averaged 8 points a game with a minimum of 5 rebounds, 5 steals per game. What was more impressive than anything was she had 13 assist in the championship game. She is a very unselfish player and put her team’s needs above her own. Reagan is a natural leader when comes to any sport. She is able to lead her team to success and encourages them daily in practice and games. It is a privilege to coach her and I look forward to watch her grow as an athlete.

Congratulations Reagan and keep up the good work!

Liberty Under Fire Past Global Warming Predictions mostly Hot Air Harold Pease, Ph. D Billed as the storm of the year, and perhaps of the decade or 21st century, tens of millions of people from Philadelphia-to-Boston scurried home before the 50 to 75mph snow-blowing icy winds over took them. Authorities banned travel on all streets in New York City and violators, who lingered too long, could be fined $300. City Mayor, Bill de Blasio warned, “This will most likely be one of the largest blizzards in the history of New York City.” More than 7,700 flights in the Northeast were canceled and governors rushed to declare state of emergencies. Certainly the Northeast could use some of that “hot air” from the global warming predictions of the past to mitigate this mega storm.

Here are a few of those predictions as cited in The New American, “Embarrassing Predictions,” August 25, 2014.

In June 30, 1989, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) warned, “entire nations could be wiped off the face of the earth by rising sea levels if global warming is not reversed by the year 2000.” Crop failures and flooding “would create an exodus of (starving) ‘ecorefugees’.” The year 2000 came and went with no nations disappearing or with fleeing starving “eco-refugees.”

In 2005 the UNEP predicted some 50 million “climate refugees” fleeing the Caribbean and low-lying Pacific islands, along with coastal areas within five years; 2010 came and went without producing a single “climate refugee.” The United States and China both have significant populations within these danger zones. Most of the identified areas, rather than deceasing in population because of the melting ice, actually increased in population.

Not to be outdone a Pentagon Commission Report in 2003 envisioned “a post-apocalyptic world caused by global warming within a decade, only to be proven wrong about everything.” By 2013 California was to be flooded with inland seas, parts of the Netherlands ‘unlivable,’

polar ice all but gone in the summers, and surging temperatures.” The environmentalist U.K. Observer followed with the prediction that “Britain will be ‘Siberian’ in less than 20 years.”

climate. If such a rise has occurred why is the Artic ice twice its 2007 thickness? Global warmists simply move on to the next frightening prediction without explaining why those of the past did not pan out.

Perhaps the most outlandish global warming alarmists predictions was that of the end of snow. David Viner, a climatologist from the University of East Anglia, predicted that a “snowfall would become ‘a very rare and exciting event’…. Children just aren’t going to know what snow is.” And, “skiing in Scotland would soon become just a memory.” Fortunately for skiers, the BBC reported in 2014 “that Scottish hills had more snow than at any point in seven decades.”

Of course, neither the present mega storm in the Northeast, nor the designation of the winter of 2013-14 as one of the coldest on record in the United States, verify or fail to verify global warming. But if any of the predictions had any validity New England would not be so cold this week. Certainly the “hot air” from the global warming alarmists predictions would have easily melted the two to three feet of snow they now endure.

Close behind the end of snow prediction was the end of ice for the Artic prediction, made by former Vice President Al Gore and others in 2007-09. Gore maintained that, “the entire North Polarized cap will disappear in five years.” It didn’t!! When that time came in 2013, ice coverage was actually 50 percent higher than the year before.

In fact, dozens of global warmists, anxious to witness the prophecy fulfilled, boarded the flagship MV Akedemik Shokalskiy for the North Pole and enroute were frozen in place by sea-ice. They had to be rescued by a helicopter because ice cutters were unable to free the ship for two weeks. Actually, Europe’s Cryosat spacecraft measured ice volume in the summer of 2013 at 9,000 cubic kilometers—twice the thickness as reported in 2007 when Gore made his prediction. Obviously the North Pole was still deep in ice.

A similar case can be made for the South Pole. “Sea Ice area in the south is now at the highest point since records began” indeed, “if both poles are considered together, there is about one million square kilometers of frozen area above and beyond the long-term average.”

The embarrassing predictions of the global warming crowd of the past do not give us confidence in their predictions of the future. In the last three months new predictions have surfaced. The latest include: a prediction of a fifty percent increase in lightning strikes this century over the last. Global warming will threaten the survival of more than half of all species of birds in the United States and Canada by the turn of the century. And, the United Nations reported a historic rise in CO2 gases in 2013, which will inevitably force a warming of the
