Religious Entities Must Protect Our Freedom or lose our freedom

By Glenn Mollette Religious entities benefit from being in America. In most cases they enjoy 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. This means Catholics, Protestants, Mormons, Muslims and all other churches, synagogues, temples and mosques do not pay taxes.

Religious entities are also privileged to promote their religion. This is a good thing for our country. Our forefathers and thousands of Americans have paid the price in effort and blood to guarantee our country this privilege.

The Muslim religion has grown dramatically in this country.

From September 11, 2001 until 2010 Muslims grew from one million to 2.6 million followers according to the US Religion Census of 2010. The data was collected by the Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies and released by the Association of Religion Data Archives. The report is available on the ARDA website. During the same time frame, followers of the Christian faith diminished. The number of people in our country who do not align themselves with any religion was reported to be up to 158 million people. This was the fastest growing group during the same timespan.

To trim the budget, lawmakers may suspend a critical element of America’s missile defenses.

But gutting this core national security technology -- the “Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle” -- would seriously undermine national security. Missile defense has never played a more important role in protecting Americans and keeping global threats in check.

The EKV is the part of a missile defense rocket that collides with incoming ordnance. Using sophisticated radars, a defense system detects an enemy missile. It then launches a multi-stage rocket that, once exiting the earth’s atmosphere, ejects the EKV. The EKV then navigates its way to the targeted missile, hits, and destroys it.

Currently, the United States has 30 EKV units in operation. 14 more are under development and are planned to become operational by 2017. Because so much of the legwork is completed, investing in new EKV units is an efficient use of taxpayer resources; engineers don’t have to build a new system from scratch.

By upgrading this system our country will be protected by the most advanced missile defense technology available.

In June, military personnel conducted a successful test of the newest EKV unit, with the interceptor hitting a dummy target.

This is major milestone as it’s the first successful intercept using the second-generation EKV. Some previous test runs have failed, but such failures aren’t unusual. After all, these are incredibly sophisticated systems attempting to hit targets travelling thousands of miles per hour in suborbital space.

Experts from the military and industry have proven they can turn around once-flailing missile defense projects in a timely manner.

I am not aware of any church or religion that teaches that our country or flag should be worshiped. However, every religious entity should stand up for this country, salute our flag and be united in protecting this nation.

Consider the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3), a sea-based interceptor that targets short- to intermediate-range missiles. It also suffered failures in early testing, but with additional resources the kinks were quickly worked out. SM-3 has now successfully intercepted missiles in space 26 times. The lesson: upgrade an existing and capable system, rather than starting over.

When I was a child we often said the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag in Bible school. Part of our worship was respecting and paying tribute to our nation.

Appreciating these nuances, the top military brass has proposed investing another $560 million into EKV development. That’s about 1 percent of what’s apportioned for missile defense of the next three years.

All religious groups including Muslims should cry out against ISIS and Sharia law. There is no room in this nation for the mistreatment of people. This includes all people.

However, some in Congress are pushing back. They want the EKV shelved, in favor of starting over with a new technology.

Militant Islam, discrimination, Sharia law and hurting other people must be forbidden in this country. We could even go a little further with this. What about churches who forbid women to speak and will not allow the divorced to serve?

Christian churches have been offenders of discrimination for centuries.

That’s dangerous. Effective missile defense isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity.

The practice of religion is the opportunity to promote a faith that helps mankind. We’ve had enough hurt in this country from discrimination to mistreating our own citizens. While we have come a long way in this nation we must continue to be vigilant to maintain a free and safe America.

If we don’t all get on board and help each other protect this nation we could lose all of our religious freedoms. We could also lose any other freedom for which hundreds of thousands of Americans have died.

But starting from scratch would waste an enormous amount of time and money. And scrapping EKV would leave our existing defenses bereft of an essential component for several extra years.

Consider North Korea’s nuclear missile program, with the stated goal of being able to launch a pre-emptive attack on the United States. Or Iran’s nuclear weapons program. That country’s ruling elite continues to spout apocalyptic visions.

We have to be ready in case they strike first. And we need our technologies to evolve with the increasingly sophisticated missiles of rogue regimes. As Admiral James A. Winnefeld, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recently stated, “a robust and capable missile defense is our best bet to defend the United States from such an attack.”

We can’t afford to wait to build an entirely new replacement for the EKV. Investing and fixing today’s system with existing technologies will ensure our defense systems will be fully operational as quickly as possible. Scrapping the EKV would leave us vulnerable to dangerous rogue regimes.

Taft High sophomore Rocky Mankini and law enforcement teacher Tom White have been named student and staff member of the month for September.

Mankini is a sophomore who is as sincere as he is smart. The straight A student is ranked 7th in his class. He was nominated by Mike Cowan, his Spanish teacher from last year. “I really enjoyed being in his (Cowan’s) class. He always made my day better,” Mankini said. Cowan praised his former student, “Rocky has the best attitude in town. He is a true leader, … always happy, funny and very helpful.”

His favorite class this year is Mr. (Alan) Popejoy’s English honors class. “I really enjoy the teacher and the subject,” he said.

Mankini has also made a favorable impression on Popejoy, who said, “Rocky is brilliantly unique. … His superior critical thinking skills typically only reside in a person far beyond Rocky’s years. I have always been impressed with his ability to adroitly follow my instruction and produce excellent work. He is articulate, eloquent, cerebral, meticulous, and committed to getting the most out of his educational experience.”

Mankini enjoys playing electric guitar in the jazz band class with Amanda Posey. But in college he plans to major in computer science and hopes to go to MIT, “if I continue to do well.” David Dennis, his computer systems management teacher, describes his student as “always friendly, and kind to others. He is very curious and gives a sincere effort to master every assignment. Oh yeah, he is funny too!”

The West Side Recreation and Park District held a ribbon cutting for its latest venture “The Rec Shoppe” which will provide screen printing for uniforms and include other items for sale such as Frisbee golf discs, whiffile ball supplies and other recreation related items.

The Rec Shoppe will be open for business on November 3rd and hours of operation will be 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 7pm weekdays and 9am to 2pm on Saturdays.

“We are extremely excited to about this new venture” said Deputy Director Les Clark III “we intend to run this venture as a business and hope that any profits we bring in can then be put back in to the community.”

Olsen also stressed that this would be a partnership and sponsorship opportunity for those in the business community that would like to partner with the District in providing for the recreations needs on the West Side.

One of the first print jobs the shop will be doing will be t-shirts for breast cancer awareness a portion of the proceeds from the t-shirt sales will go to support breast cancer research. The shop is also making the shirts for the high school water polo team.

Olsen said that this is another in an ongoing effort to improve recreational opportunities for Districts residents.

Along with the shop opening Olsen touted the Boards approval of $260,000 in improvements for the Little League fields that the District recently took over from the County and the beginning of construction of a second whiffile ball field to be called Scully field in honor of long time Dodgers announcer Vin Scully. The fields may be chosen to hold the west coast regional waffle ball champion ships next June.

Olsen invited local residents to come by and take a look at the new facilities and wanted to remind people of the many existing recreation opportunities the District provides such as their professional level bowling ally, seniors walking and cycling programs, and there well outfitted weight and exercise room.

That praise would describe Tom White, across the street.

White, 41, has taught at the West Side Regional Occupational Program for eight years and said it was an honor to receive the award from the Taft Union High School Renaissance program, which promotes academics. “It was nice that they thought of us (ROP). Sometimes I think we are off the (Taft High) map.” The Taft Union High School District contracts with ROP to provide vocational instruction to students.

“I’m humbled by it (the award) and very appreciative,” White said. “I didn’t expect it. It’s one of those things that you just did not see coming.”

White has established a good rapport with students, he said, because “I treat them like people. I try to make law enforcement fun. It can be a dry subject. This class is designed to get students interested in law enforcement or left them find out that it is not for them. I’ve had eight to 10 students go into law enforcement over that past eight years and seven are at Taft College to pursue a major in criminal justice. Two stopped by yesterday (Sept. 30) to ask for help.”

The retired correctional officer is well known to students because he has coached Little League and the JFL. He has been married to his wife Suzanne for 13 years and they have three children: Lizette Mendoza, 18, Michael, 12, and Tyler, 9.

Ron Waldrop announced at Tuesday’s City Council meeting that he had gathered enough signatures to qualify to run a writein campaign for City Council. Waldrop had previously failed to gather enough signatures to place his name on the ballot for the council during the regular candidate filing period this summer.

With this announcement Waldrop must begin the difficult task of convincing enough voters to enter the voting booth on Election Day with the express purpose of writing his name on their ballot.

The Council has three seats up for election this fall including Randy Miller’s, the seat vacated by Mayor Paul Linder and the seat Waldrop currently holds. The candidate names that will be on the ballot are Miller’s, Renee Bitzer-Hill and Josh Bryant all of whom qualified during the normal filing period.

For racers, the feeling of standing at the top of the podium is unmatchable. It puts the icing on the cake for all those long hours spent on the track training.

In Clay McLean’s case, he can truly attest to that. At the Western Divisional Finals in Reno, he took first place in a very competitive 10 year old Intermediate division. However, Clay didn’t stop there. A month later racing in the same division, he took first place in the California State Championships. With the win, he qualified for the National Championship in Oklahoma City. The race takes place next month and we are confident that Clay will bring his winning ways to the big stage.

Liberty Under Fire President defies UN Charter on Syria

By Harold Pease, Ph. D Three weeks ago President Barack Obama made it clear to the United Nations General Assembly that he no longer intended to be guided, at least in foreign policy, by the U.S. Constitution, “We cannot rely on a rule-book written for a different century,” he told them, then he advocated global government through the UN. “If we lift our eyes beyond our borders – if we think globally and act cooperatively,” he said, “We can shape the course of this century as our predecessors shaped the post-World War II age” (Obama UN Address Sept.24, 2014).

So with this clear directive to follow UN law, as established by those who “shaped the post-World War II age,” he spoke of the bombing of Syria to get rid of ISIS. This without either the permission of Congress, as required

by Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution or that of the United Nations though the UN Charter. Nor did he seek permission from the sovereign country of Syria to invade, with warplanes their soil.

Is an attack warranted under international law and, if not, could we be viewed by the world as an aggressor nation? Consider the following United Nations Charter violations we incurred when we crossed the Syrian border without Syrian permission to illuminate ISIS: Article 2, Sec. 4, “All Members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state….”

Even our threat of the use of force is a violation. The only exception to the use of force is self-defense as stipulated in Art. 51. “Nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of individual or collective self-defence if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations, until the Security Council has taken measures necessary to maintain international peace and security.”

Obama has yet to make a case to the United Nations for attacking the sovereign country of Syria. He has not, and will not, because he would have to justify such action on the basis that Syria had first shown actual aggression toward us necessitating our responding in self-defense.

This he cannot do. Yes, ISIS has a history of aggressive behavior, even beheading two U.S. citizens on Iraqi soil, but Assad had nothing to do with this and has not even been consulted in resolving the problem either approving or denying our war planes entering his country. Were U. S. citizens attacked by Syria we could respond in self-

The Taft Independent defense but we were not. According to the UN Charter such acts of aggression justifying self defense must immediately be provided to the UN Security Council who then decide “such action as it deems necessary in order to maintain or restore international peace and security.”

Obituary

Do not get me wrong, I oppose world government and think it incompatible with a country’s sovereignty and liberty and want us to operate totally independent of it, but Obama made a strong case for global government declining to follow the Constitution that he swore to “uphold, defend, and preserve” in favor of it, yet he refused to follow its charter also. He must follow one or the other or he risks being accused of following no legal path.

Other United Nation Charter rules also need satisfied.

Article 39 stipulates that “the Security Council shall determine the existence of any threat to the peace, breach of the peace, or act of aggression and shall make recommendations, or decide what measures shall be taken in accordance with Articles 41 and 42, to maintain or restore international peace and security.” Even before this takes place Article 40 must be satisfied which reads: “In order to prevent an aggravation of the situation, the Security Council may, before making the recommendations or deciding upon the measures provided for in Article 39, call upon the parties concerned to comply with such provisional measures as it deems necessary or desirable.

Such provisional measures shall be without prejudice to the rights, claims, or position of the parties concerned.

The Security Council shall duly take account of failure to comply with such provisional measures.” Obama went to the UN, not to comply with any of these instructions, but to tell them what he is already doing.

Theoretically Russia, China and Syria could ask the United Nations to define the United States as the aggressor nation and Obama as a war criminal and call for economic sanctions on us as has been used on other nations. . That would be unlikely as they too are showing their own aggressive natures, Russia invading the Ukraine and China coming down oppressively on Hong Kong.

Ironically Obama refuses to be guided by constitutional law or established international law—the very authority that he patronizes in his speech. And since we are the most powerful military power on earth the UN is not likely to press the matter, even more so as other countries, without UN or Syrian permission, are also bombing in Syria. Still, our signature on the Charter document obligates our submission to international law now mocked

by Obama’s not following it. Did we think when we signed the Charter, creating the “world government,” that the rules did not apply to us, that we could just bomb whomever, whenever, and wherever we wished? Obama must think so.

ANDY HOULE Andy was born January 16, 1973 in Taft to Andrew and Joyce (Gunter) Cauvel and passed away in Bakersfield October 4, 2014. Andy had a huge heart and considered everyone he met a friend. From the time Andy could walk he had a love for cars and working on them. He enjoyed spending time at the beach. Andy has touched all of our lives in one way or another and he will be missed by all.

Andy leaves behind wife, Julie; sons, Zack (Liz Fearon) and River (Emily Gentle); daughter, Aubreigh (Delaine Williams); stepchildren, Brittney, Tyler, Chelsey, Bryson, Madison and Destiny; and five grand babies; his mother, Joyce Houle and father, Richard Houle; sisters, Vallorie Rubright ( Jeff ) and Amber Moffitt ( James); brother, Aaron Peterson (Stacy); nephews, Bryndin, Preston, Christian, Andrew, Sean and Tyler; and many loving friends and family. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 17, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at West Side District Cemetery Mausoleum.
