Rotary Club of Taft Sponsors Community Concert Bus Rides Westside Community Concert members will again have bus transportation to Bakersfield for the sight concerts of the 2012-13 season. The Rotary Club of Taft is sponsoring the round trips to the Rabobank Theater for the season, as part of the Club’s commitment to community service.

TUHS is providing a 2010 50 passenger bus for a nominal fee, as a community service as well. Well-known Gary Rennie is the volunteer driver.

The first concert is October 4th, and those wanting to ride the bus need to be in the TUHS parking lot on Tenth and San Emido before the 5:30 PM departure. Since the Rotary Club of Taft is sponsoring, there will be no fees for the trips. Delivery and pickup is right at the front door, a blessing for many seniors.

Tickets may be purchased at the door, and season tickets by mailing a check for $80 to the Bakersfield Community Concert Association, P.O. Box 11920, Bakersfield, CA 93389-3923. At $10 a concert, and free transportation, the Community Concerts are the best entertainment buy of the year!

Five of the eight concerts are on Sunday afternoons.

Midway-Sunset Lions Club member Tim Crabb puts the finishing touches on the Cemetary sign that will hang over the entrance to the Lions Club Haunted House. According to Larry Robison, President of the Taft Lions Club, the haunted house will be open from Oct. 27th to Oct. 31st from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every night.

Taft College Foundation Third Annual Alumni and Friends Cougar Rib-Eye Cookout Celebrating our 90th Anniversary On Saturday, October 20, 2012, the Taft College Foundation will host its Third Annual (Alumni and Friends) Cougar Rib-Eye Cookout, on the Taft College Campus, in the Quad area. From 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. there will be a Social Hour, with dinner service beginning at approximately 6:00 p.m. and continuing until 8:00 p.m.

The evening will include formal presentation of colors & flag salute, live music by the band “Blackboard Playboys,” from Trout’s of Bakersfield, a couple of surprises, a raffle for all ticket holders to win a $300 gift card, and of course fabulous rib-eye steaks, prepared by our able caterer, Orchel Krier of the Tumbleweed Café & Bar. The dinner menu includes steaks, salad, beans, bread, and ice cream for dessert. Beverages will be available for sale, including beer & wine, as well as sodas. Water will be complimentary. Once again, we are fortunate to have as our event sponsor TRC Operating Company, Inc. As with last year, a special feature of the evening will be a salute to our local veterans, who will be our special guests for the evening. There will be 100 complimentary tickets available to veterans and their spouses on a first come first serve basis.

The Rib-Eye Cookout has become a favorite event at Taft College and in the community”, notes Dr. Dena Maloney, Superintendent-President. “This event will recognize and honor local veterans, who served their county with honor and epitomize the importance of service to others. The Rib-Eye Cookout will also raise funds to support needed programs at Taft College.”

Our Recommendations: Noerr, Krier, Hudgens and Mangum are Best Choice for City Representatives This November Yes, its time again to make decisions about who will lead our fair city this November 6th.

Of course we’re biased because we know all of the candidates and closely follow them at city hall, talk Dave Noerr with them frequently and have come to know each one of them in their roles as elected officials or local businesspeople. In our opinion, these community leaders are best suited to lead the City over the next four years.

Current city councilman and former mayor Dave Noerr is running for reelection and we recommend that he be returned to the city council for another term. Dave is a no-nonsense conservative who can be counted on to make sure the city maintains a heathy reserve and a balanced budget. Taft is fortunate to have someone like Dave who is willing to serve.

City Councilman, Rotarian, and businessman Orchel Krier has also served the people well. Orchel was appointed by the council two years ago when Craig Noble resigned. The council made a wise decision by picking Krier to fill the vacancy. Krier is best known for his generosity and community involvement.

He is always willing to help or donate to a good cause. He is also owner of the Orchel Krier Tumbleweed cafe and a savvy businessman who has brought his talents and skills to the city council. We recommend that Orchel be elected to the city council for a full 4 year term.

Our next recommendation is for city clerk Louise Hudgens. Hudgens, who is unopposed for reelection, has faithfully served the citizens of Taft as city clerk for two terms. Louise is an institution at city hall and no meeting goes unrecorded without her professional touch that ensures accurate record keeping and timely reports so necessary for a smoothly run city. We recommend Louise for another term as city clerk.

Louise Hudgens Finally, we are recommending Ben Mangum for Taft City Treasurer. Ben is the owner of Ben’s Books on Center Street and a retired finance and insurance businessman.

Ben has been involved in business for nearly 40 years and has a lot to offer Taft in terms of business experience and financial expertise.

Ben’s experience as a businessman, his commitment to Taft by opening a small business and his enthusiasm for public service make Ben an Ben Mangum excellent choice for Taft City Treasurer.

Taft Chamber Announces Christmas Parade Plans

The Taft District Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau has announced the theme for this year’s Christmas Parade, scheduled for Monday evening, December 3, 2012, beginning at 6 p.m., on Center Street. The Downtown Business Committee, with the blessing of the Chamber Board of Directors, has chosen the theme, “Miracle on Center Street” for this year’s parade.

“We already have experienced miracles on Center Street this year, with the opening of several new businesses in a time where economics were uncertain at best,” stated Kathy Orrin, Executive Director of the Chamber. “This theme is a testimony to the positive energy expected for this upcoming holiday season.”

The parade will stage on Main Street, as it did last year under the direction of the Taft Lions and the Midway Sunset Lions Clubs. Taft Rotary will be in charge outfitting the Vanguard Division—the dignitaries who are a necessary part of every Christmas parade. The Soroptimists will judge the parade entries, and the Kiwanis Club will provide the award certificates and plaques. “We cannot present a Christmas parade without the cooperation and help of our local service clubs. They have been so generous in their time and monetary support of the parade,” stated Orrin.

Applications for entries into the parade are available at the Chamber, or you can call 765-2165 and an application/entry form will be emailed or mailed to you or your organization. This year the Chamber is asking a $10 donation with each entry fee. The money collected in donations for the parade will be put into the Fourth of July Fireworks Show fund.

The awards for the Christmas Parade entries in each category will be given at the Announcing and Judging Stand, Center Street and Fifth Street Plaza, immediately following the parade.

Taft College Reception for “Alumni Exhibit: Jim Campbell and Larry Jason The Taft College Art Gallery is proud to present the works of two Taft College Alumni: Jim Campbell and Larry Jason. Both attended Taft College in the 1960s, and went on to universities while continuing to reside in. As young adults both were submerged in the sights, sounds, and color of the popular culture of the 1970s. That era had a lingering impact on their individual bodies of work.

Campbell graduated in 1970 and recently retired from teaching in Fresno. He has been actively showing his work in that area for the last several years. His works in this first alumni exhibition are some of his recent work. His work is characterized by precisely painted geometric forms and bold colors and are reminiscent of the work of Ellsworth Kelly all very appealing to the eye.

Jason graduated a few years earlier and has recently been exhibiting his work in the Bakersfield area. Cultural icons such and Caesar Chavez and local landmarks are frequent subjects for Jason’s serigraphs. Also included in this exhibit are a few works reminiscent of Jim Dine in the focus on the colors and textures of fashion.

Viewers will be pleased with the warm, bold colors and images used by these two artists.

Taft College Ribbon Cutting Ceremony For Al Baldock Cougar Sports Center

On Saturday, October 20, 2012, Taft College will formally dedicate the Al Baldock Cougar Sports Center. The formal ceremony will begin at 4:00 p.m., with presentations made outside at the intersection of Emmons Park Drive & Wildcat Way in Taft, CA. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will be conducted by the Taft Chamber of Commerce.

After the presentations, guests will be invited in to the facility where a historical photo perspective of the Taft College Football Program and other memorabilia will be displayed.

Al Baldock was an inspiration to many in this community, not only students and his ball players, but Taft College staff and professors as well as local business leaders and residents. Taft College is delighted to be able to memorialize Coach Baldock Former Taft College Championship Football Coach Al Baldock with this formal dedication and renaming of their sports facility.

Immediately following this event, the Third Annual Cougar Rib Eye Cookout will be held on the Taft College Quad. Social hour will be from 5:00 – 6:00 pm, with dinner service provided from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Orchel Krier and staff will again provide the wonderful steaks, beans, salad & bread, in addition to libations of your choice. Sodas and water will also be available.

Tickets are $20 per person and are available in the Student Services/Administration Building on campus.

“We are pleased to honor the contributions of Coach Al Baldock and the impact he had not only Taft College, but also the lives of the young men he coached while serving as the football coach from (1976-1991), said Dr. Dena Maloney, Superintendent-President of Taft College.

“The Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony is a highlight for those who worked with Al Baldock and enjoyed Cougar Football. The Rib Eye Cookout is a wonderful way to round out the evening”.

Please join us for this very special celebration, to not only honor a wonderful coach, but to also celebrate the 90th Anniversary of Taft College.

Taft College Championship Football Coach Al Baldock Al Baldock believed in men, and lead them to believe in themselves.

He was the Vince Lombardi of college football for a generation in Taft, a natural-born winner that came to the town in the ‘70s and changed a community forever.

Baldock came to California in the 1940’s with his mom and younger sister Rovella when he

was 11 years old. How they got here is a story of hard times in an early childhood without a father and little money.

When he was 11, Al, his sister Rovella and his mom hitchhiked from Texas to Santa Monica, California where they settled down to a life of hard work. Al’s mom supported the family by working for Douglas Aircraft during the war.

Al attended Santa Monica High School where he learned to play football under coach Jim Sutherland, who was like a father to him. Often, when times were tough, Sutherland would come

by Al’s home and sit on the porch and encourage the young quarterback.

As Captain of the Santa Monica High School football team, Al led the team to the CIF Championship in 1947.

His early life of tough times, the example of his mother working to support the family on her own, and the encouragement by Coach Sutherland to do his best are no doubt the personal experiences that Coach Baldock relied on to encourage football players during his over 40 year career of football coaching history.

Al Baldock was born in Holly, Texas on December 17, 1929 and passed away in Taft on September 14, 2009. He moved to Taft in the late 1950s and after a time out of the area came back to Taft in 1976.

A 1954 graduate of the University of Southern California where he earned four letters on the gridiron for the Trojans, Baldock received Collier’s All-American honors in 1950. Baldock began his coaching career in 1951 as a head coach/player for the Ft. Riley, Kansas U.S. Army team.

Beginning in 1954, he served coaching stints at Leuzinger High School and Taft College. He coached the Allan Hancock College Bulldogs three seasons, from 1959 through 1961. He went on to coach at College of the Sequoias for seven years. He then moved on to San Diego State University and Los Angeles City College, before returning to Taft College as the head coach for 16 seasons (1976-1991).

He was a teacher and coach at many schools including, Allan Hancock, Los Angeles City College, San Diego State, and College of the Sequoias. Besides being the Athletic Director at Taft College he was also the football coach from the mid 1970s through the early 1990s.

In 1960 at Allen Hancock College in Santa Maria, head coach Al Baldock, and assistants John Madden and Dick Mannini guided the team to a perfect 10-0 season that culminated in a victory over Riverside City College in the Orange Show Bowl in San Bernardino. A conference championship banner for the 1960 Bulldog football team hangs in the Allan Hancock College basketball gymnasium today. The team was always short of players, and Baldock had to use the players for both offense and defense positions.

During his 32 years as a head coach, his teams compiled a 257-58-10 record. One of the most successful community college coaches in California football history, Baldock led his squads to 15 conference championships, six state championships and two national titles.

In his last 17 seasons as head coach, his teams averaged over 320 yards per game rushing, scored over 6,524 points, and won 84% of their games. He was California Community College Football Coach of the year six times.

Under Coach Baldock Taft College won 15 conference titles, six State Championships, four Potato Bowls, and two National Championships. He was named State Coach of the Year six times.

Former Taft College football player Andy Baroncelli said that Coach Baldock was a great influence on his life.

“Coach Baldock told us we were in control of our own destiny,” Baroncelli said. “He showed us that we could control our destiny and we transformed that into championship status.”

Baroncelli said that he had never seen anyone work as hard as Baldock.

“Late one evening, about 11 pm, when everyone was sleeping, I saw a light on in the gym,” Baroncelli said. “It was Coach Baldock working in his office. Now I had trained all day and all night and I was tired. He was with us during that time, and I thought, if he can still be working this late, I have to work just as hard as the coach.”

Former Taft College football player Mike Octhimer said of Coach Baldock, “There will never be another coach like him and his record speaks for itself. I am just proud to be able to say, he was my coach. I will miss him greatly but will carry him in my heart always.”

Eric Bailey Earns Honor from National Merit Scholarship Program

Peace Lutheran Church Hosts Marketplace November 3rd

Taft Union High School Principal Marilyn Brown presents a letter of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation to senior Eric Bailey, as his father, Ron, mother, Julia, sister, Caitlin, and counselor Claude Bradford watch. Bailey has been named a commended student in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program, an honor bestowed on 34,000 U.S. high school seniors, the top 3 percent.

Taft Union High School senior Eric Bailey has been named a commended student in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. Principal Marilyn Brown presented the standout student with a letter of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation on Thursday, September 27th, as his family watched.

“You are the only one at Taft High to receive this commendation this year,” Brown told him. “I want you to know how proud we are of you and what a great representative of Taft High you are.”

The honor is bestowed on 34,000 U.S. high school seniors, the top 3 percent of 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the 2011 preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship qualifying test (PSAT/NMSQT).

The scholar-athlete plans to study law at Stanford University. Eric is first in his senior class among 218 students, which makes him the leading candidate for valedictorian.

The 6-foot-3, 17-year-old is an offensive lineman, basketball center, shot put and discus thrower and a sprinter. But he wouldn’t tell you of his accomplishments unless you pressed him.

“He is a man of few words,” his father, Ron Bailey said.

His mother, Julia, added, “He is very humble.” But that’s not just how his proud parents view him.

His teachers described Eric Bailey as mature beyond his years.

Physics teacher Joy Reynolds said, “He has a lot of background knowledge that he brings into his courses and thinks further and deeper than the words that are just right in front of him on the page of the book. He also has a filter and knows when it is appropriate to ask deeper questions and when it will just confuse his classmates. He may know where the lecture is going or why you ask a leading question of the class to get them thinking in the right direction, but he doesn’t spoil it for them even though he has often already figured it out or knows the answer.”

His former football coach Steve Sprague said, “Eric was one of my favorite athletes. He is a quiet leader and earns the respect of his coaches and teammates.”

Spanish teacher Sandra Torres added, “Eric is an amazing, young man. He is so bright; he makes the most challenging work seem easy. He’s kind and pleasant and is always willing to help his classmates if they’re struggling. Although quiet, he has a witty sense of humor that often catches me off guard and makes me smile no matter what else is going on! I’ve truly enjoyed having him in my class.”

Movie Review

The Master

By Jane McCabe Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master is as strange a movie as I’ve ever seen—as much as it’s about particular characters, it’s a portrait of this big sprawling country of ours where people can embrace whatever creed or cause they desire; it’s set post-war era of the 1950’s and so has the aura of those times.

It’s not a movie that will make you comfortable—more likely it will disturb and confound you. It doesn’t come to any particular conclusion—it’s more like eating a slice of pie of Americana.

Perhaps it should be more rightly named The Master’s Apprentice because more than being about the “Master”—Lancaster Dodd, (played by the masterful Philip Seymour Hoffman) the leader of a philosophical movement known as The Cause—it’s about Freddy Quell, (brilliantly played by Joaquin Phoenix) a disturbed young man, who when the movie starts has been under psychological evaluation by the Army and has been discharged. Freddy is troubled and dangerous, a misfit and an alcoholic loser, unable to hold down a job for very long because of his erratic behavior.

There are scenes of him working as a family photographer in an upscale department store until he get into a fist fight with a customer and of him working in the farm fields cutting cabbages until accused of poisoning an elderly farm laborer with his toxic brew of alcohol he is forced flee angry workers, whereupon he stumbles aboard a small ship bound for the Panama Canal…

There he meets the ship’s captain, Lancaster Dodd, the leader of a psycho-babble movement in which advocates evoke memories of past lives to solve current illnesses and psychological dilemmas.

Dodd sees Freddy as a good subject for his “processes.” To Freddy, a lost soul, a loose cannon, a man devoid of intimacies, a man tortured by sexual fantasies, a man without family or friends, Dodd’s attentions are welcome, even though he wonders what the hell this is all about.

Dodd is even more a puzzle than Freddy, though to outward appearances he’s much stable and successful—he’s acquired a sufficient following of devoted individuals to lend credence to his ideas and is writing the second volume of his philosophy.

I’m curious about what causes certain individuals to posit themselves as masters who have the answers that have eluded the rest of us

poor souls but it’s a phenomenon that has existed I suppose since the beginning of recorded history.

Perhaps there’s more of an identification with Freddy than meets the eye and that’s why he has taken him under his wing. The rest of the family, particularly his wife, Peggy (played by the formidable Amy Adams) take a lesser view of Freddy and urge him to jettison Freddy from the movement.

At one of Dodd’s lecture he is challenge by a man named John More, who even laughs at his ideas and calls them preposterous. For this he is assaulted and beaten nearly senseless by Freddy.

Freddy is like the pit bulls with a spiked collars that I used to see in the Dominican neighborhoods of New York City. Insult Dodd and he’ll attack you.

Freddie criticizes Dodd’s son Val ( Jesse Plemons) for disregarding his father’s teachings, but Val responds by informing Freddie that his father is a fraud and all of his teachings are improvised as he goes along. Dodd is arrested for practicing medicine without proper qualifications, and Freddie is also arrested for assaulting police officers.

When he is imprisoned, he responds by destroying parts of his jail cell and smashing his head on the top bunk bed…

When Dodd’s publisher criticizes the quality of the book and its teachings to Freddie, he drags the publisher outside and assaults him.

Helen Sullivan (Laura Dern), a key member of The Cause, reads the new book and questions Dodd for contradicting previously-established terms.

When she reminds him he used the term “remembering” in the first volume and now has replaced it with “imagining,” Dodd loses his temper…

Thus the plot lumbers on. Scene after scene accrues in which we see just how misguided the entire venture is.

It’s amazing that these crazy cults perpetuate themselves as long as they do. Freddy eventually abandons the cause. He is skunked down in a movie theater when the usher comes to him with a telephone and hands him the receiver.

Guess who is calling him? It’s none other than Dodd, who says he’s now in England. He tells the poor wretch that he misses him and he wants Freddy to join him. He asks Freddy to please bring him some packs of his favorite cigarettes—Cools.

Once there Dodd tell Freddy that he either join the movement forever or he never wants to see him again. Freddy is not cured. He’s just as much an oddball that he was in the film’s beginning. Freddy chooses to leave and go his own way. In one of last scenes he is in bed with a woman he picked up in a pub, teasing her with the techniques he picked up from Dodd.

This is not a movie that will be easy to shake from my consciousness. In a way I measure the power of movies by how long they linger.

By this measure this movie is great! I think it will be nominated for an Academy Award and both Hoffman and Phoenix for best actor.

Liberty Under Fire Drone Warfare and We Wonder Why they Hate us.

On October 6, an unmanned drone flew deep into Israeli territory before it was shot down. The drone, now thought to have been sent by Lebanon, who acquired it from Iran, raises awareness of the sanctity of a nation’s airspace. As the violation of airspace has traditionally been seen as an act of war, Israel sent warplanes over Lebanon the next day.

This brings to light how calloused and disrespectful of the air space of other countries we have been where we indiscriminately kill our enemies on their soil.

Drones are now our favored weapon of choice and we unleash them on suspected “terrorists,” without the permission of sovereign countries, throughout the Middle East. Moreover, we assume unto ourselves the right of surveillance of all potential adversaries on their soil. We get away with this because we are the “town bully.” Such would be acts of war if done on stronger countries. According to the Washington Post we have “secret facilities, including two operational hubs on the East Coast, virtual Air Force cockpits in the Southwest and clandestine bases in at least six countries on two continents” (Under Obama, an Emerging Global Apparatus for drone killing, by Greg Miller, Dec. 27, 2011).

The paper reported, “Senior Democrats barely blink at the idea that a president from their party has assembled such a highly efficient machine for the targeted killing of suspected terrorists.” What is worse, “officially, they are not allowed to discuss” this most secretive activity although it is not denied.

President Barack Obama can argue that he did not invent this sophisticated “killing machine.” George W. Bush was the first to use it but he limited its use to Pakistan “where 44 strikes over five years had left about 400 people dead.” This is true, but Obama has amplified its use by at least four times the number of strikes and death and proliferated the death to several additional countries in northern Africa and the Middle East and the above numbers are conservative, the paper revealed.

The fact that such killings have included American citizens raises a serious constitutional question as well. Past presidential candidate, Ron Paul, said it best, “American citizens, even those living abroad, must be charged with a crime before being sentenced” (An Unconstitutional Killing, New York Daily News, October 2, 2011).

The latest drone, the Phantom Eye, uses a hydrogen-fueled propulsion system capable of remaining in the air for four days without refueling, and potentially flying at about 65,000 feet, thus vastly increasing the surveillance capabilities of our military (Boeing Phantom drone has 1st flight, by W. J. Hennigan, Los Angeles Times, June 4, 2012). It has a 150-foot wingspan, perhaps the largest of the drones, but others come as small as a humming bird. Should our government be able to see everything?

No wonder we are especially hated in northern Africa, the Middle East and in Pakistan. A poll last June revealed that “about 74 percent of Pakistanis surveyed regard the U. S. as an enemy,” up from 64 percent just three years ago. The Pew Research Center’s Global Attitudes Project revealed that “only 17 percent support our drone strikes” and that this activity fuels the hatred. Has it occurred to this administration that for every alleged al-Qaeda that we kill we potentially create dozens more? This is a recipe that guarantees perpetual enemies and thus perpetual war. Surely, they know this. Are we not facilitating the strength of the Taliban? The increased foreign aid to “buy back” good will in Pakistan has not worked.

Two additional concerns emerge. First, drone warfare makes war too easy. So instead of making it difficult to engage because mothers will lose sons and sisters will lose brothers, and politicians will lose votes, there are no consequences. We just label a few people terrorists, blow them up, and there is no “body bag” coverage on the nightly news—actually no coverage at all.

Second, it sanitizes war. It is like playing a video game from some structure in Nevada. No one from our side gets killed or hurt. Our players do not have to see any blood or witness the sounds of human agony that result. The “video players” from 8,000 miles away can kill and be home with their families by five o’clock for supper, oblivious to the hell that they have inflicted on others. It is virtual war for us, much like the video game “Modern Warfare II,” and we play it so well.

We have violated the air space of probably a dozen countries and killed their people. If they did not fear us we would presently be at war with most of them. Then we wonder why they hate us. When they are stronger they may one day send drones to spy and kill us.

Bailey Wins Peace Poster Contest Oaxacan Community Clean Up Taft Neighborhoods Caitlin Bailey won third place in the state-wide Peace poster contest sponsored by the Lion’s Club. Caitlin attends McKittrick Elementary. She has lived all of her life in Taft. She also enjoys JFL cheerleading and long distance running. Cailtin hopes to some day attend medical school and become a pediatrician.

Volunteers from the Oaxacan community organized a community clean-up last week in Ford City. The volunteers approached the Taft City Council and volunteered to clean-up areas in the city and county areas of Taft, according to local businessman Ed Herrera who asked the city to donate vests and tools to the volunteers. Herrera said the group plans more clean-up days.

Confucious School Bring 100th Celebration to Taft October 21st Water District Issues Vouchers for Old Inefficient Toilets The West Kern Water District held it’s “Junk Your John” day last Saturday which turned out to be very a successful event.

More than 145 old inefficient toilets were turned in by local residents for a $150 voucher issued by the district for the purchase of a new water efficient toilet at Taft True Value Hardware store.

On Sunday, October 21st, the Chinese Confucius School of Bakersfield is bringing its 100th Celebration to OT Cookhouse in Taft from 2 to 5 pm. There will be a program at the OT Cookhouse located in Taft at 205 North 10th Street. This Free event will include the Lion dance, Songs and Music as well and will close with the Chinese Costume Show featuring 5000 years of Fashion.

Four Arrested For Narcotics Violation in Taft Four people were arrested early Wednesday morning on narcotics violations according to Taft Police.

Tamatha Moor, Billy Darcy Jr. and Alex Vasquez were arrested at 1035 Stevens Street in Taft for possession of controlled substances, cultivation of marijuana, and maintaining a house for the sale of drugs.

Leslie Clark who was present in the home was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance.

According to Taft Police Sergeant Shad Swanson, a narcotics search warrant was served at the home at 7 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Taft Police, who had secured the warrant were assisted by the Kern County Probation Department and the Kern Narcotics Enforcement Team.

Alex Vasquez was also arrested on a misdemeanor warrant and was determined to be a parolee at large.

Police secured drug paraphernalia, drug sales materials, prescription drugs, 2 marijuana plants, 1/2 pound of marijuana valued at approximately $500, and 9 1/2 grams of suspected methamphetamine valued at approximately $950.

All four suspects were booked into the Taft city jail.

California Gas Prices Rise .50 Cents Average retail gasoline prices in California have risen 50.0 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $4.66/g yesterday. This compares with the national average that has increased 0.6 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.80/g, according to gasoline price website CaliforniaGasPrices.com.
