Want To Cut Unemployment? Look To The Energy Field

By Parker Hallam North Dakota boasts the lowest unemployment rate in the nation. Texas is outpacing the United States as a whole in job growth. Pennsylvania added 1,300 manufacturing jobs in March alone.

This isn’t a coincidence. Oil and natural gas exploration is fueling a jobs boom.

But if some activists get their way, those jobs could disappear. Citing bogus claims, these activists want to turn back the clock on advances in drilling technology. They want to turn the energy boom into a bust.

The stakes are high. Employment in the oil and gas sector has jumped by 40 percent since 2007, compared to a sluggish 1 percent in other private-sector employment. The rapid growth of energy jobs is revitalizing communities across the nation.

In states rich with natural gas and oil, new pathways to the middle class are opening up. More energy exploration means an increased demand for rig workers and welders, geologists and engineers. The average oil and gas industry worker earns nearly $97,000 yearly, more than double the average American wage.

The oil and gas boom is also boosting hiring in other sectors of the economy. Increased oil and gas production requires new infrastructure -- resulting in jobs for construction workers and manufacturers. Of course, oil and gas needs to be moved to market, creating jobs for truck drivers and shipyard and railroad workers.

In all, the gas and oil sector supports nearly 10 million American jobs.

At the heart of this energy boom is a technique called hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking.” This process injects large volumes of water, chemicals, and sand into wells under high pressure to break apart rock and release once unreachable deposits of oil and gas.

Fracking technology has been around for 50 years, but recent advances in its application have opened up vast new reserves. Fracking opponents argue that the technology uses too much scarce freshwater and could contaminate ground water sources. Both claims are false -- contradicted by the research of both independent experts and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Fracking represents just 0.3 percent of all U.S. freshwater consumption. Even car washes and golf courses account for more than that!

In fact, energy derived from fracking uses water more efficiently than other major energy sources. According to University of Texas researchers, natural gas power plants use 50 percent less water than coal-fired plants, even after accounting for the water lost in fracking.

Anti-fracking activists have circulated tales of flaming faucets and poisoned wells that are nothing more than Hollywood sensationalism. Former EPA head Lisa Jackson debunks these myths: “In no case have we made a definitive determination that the fracking process has caused chemicals to enter groundwater.” Numerous state regulatory officials have reached the same conclusion. Fracking techniques are typically employed at depths more than a mile of impenetrable rock below drinking-water supplies. Furthermore, 99.5 percent of fracturing fluid consists of harmless water and sand.

The United States is now the world’s largest energy producer and the jobs boom from fracking is lifting America out of a recession. The activists have their facts wrong: fracking is a safe way to power our economy.

Alpha House is sending out a little information to the media about where the shelter stands. We would like to share it with the Taft Independent. Here is what is being sent out.

The question has been asked many times lately, “Has Alpha House closed their doors?” The answer is “No.” Alpha House has not closed their doors. They have faced a financial crisis and have had to restructure services temporarily. At the time the decision was made for restructuring Alpha House had 1 adult and 1 child client. Although, staff had to be laid off the clients were still housed at the shelter we were just unable to serve any more than that overnight.

Day services were still offered with those who needed assistance with peer counseling, resources and referrals as well as the 24 hour hotline staying in operation the whole time. After the 2 original clients moved into their own home Alpha House also accommodated another single woman in a domestic violence situation.

When Alpha House first opened its doors in 1992 it was their goal to get 200 people to become monthly donors at $40 each. Alpha House is still working on this goal and although the amount is the same Alpha House has some donors that donate less than $40 and some donors that donate more. Last year Alpha House received a grant from EF&SP a federally funded emergency food and shelter program.

At this time this is the only source of government funding that Alpha House receives. Private grants, donations and fundraisers have always been the source of income that has kept this shelter going.

On Monday, September 29th, 2014 Alpha House will be accepting clients overnight again. The financial crisis is not over, Alpha House is still very much in need of monthly contributors and support. The layoff of staff is still in effect, but the need for services is tremendous, Alpha House has been having to turn away those in need for overnight shelter on a daily basis. During this time Alpha House has had some very generous donations. We would like to take the time to Thank Bob Colston and his family for their donation in Memory of Joann Colston a former Alpha House Board Member, her services to Alpha House were greatly appreciated. We would also like to Thank Rite Way Carpet Cleaning for their support during this time. The Fox Theater in Taft was able to donate over $500 from their Best of Times Fundraiser, Thank you Fox Theater for thinking of us. This community has been a great support to our facility and the staff and board members are grateful to be a part of such a loving, caring and giving community. Center I would like to thank Phillips 66 Taft pipeline office for sponsoring the “Feed the Needs”” barbeque that fed about 200 individuals. The barbeque was organized by Larry Crews, the Major Maintenance Cordinator, and a team of employees who set-up, barbequed, and served the food. The effort was a part of their concern for the community of Taft and partnered with The N.E.E.D.S. Center whose mission is to provide assistance for low income families on the Westside of Kern County.

Miller Time : Washington D.C. Honor Flight

By Randy Miller I had the distinct privilege to be a part of the Kern County Honor Flight this past September 20-22nd on a flight with over forty plus WWII and Korean War veterans to Washington, DC. The flight to DC is for these veterans so that they may see their war memorials as they may never get a chance as WWII vets are passing away by the thousands. The WWII Memorial was only completed in the past 10 years so it is a long time coming for them. The WWII veterans that went on this flight were all in their 90’s and five women vets were a part of this group.

Any WWII vet is eligible and they did not have to have been in combat. The Kern County Honor Flight (KCHF) is part of an all states organization headquartered in Washington, DC. The KCHF has sent nine flights of veterans to see their memorials. I don’t have a total of all the vets from around the nation that have gone but it is in the thousands for sure. Each vet is assigned a ‘Guardian”, many are volunteers, and it can be anyone except for a spouse. I was asked by our own local Korean War vet Howard Minton to be his guardian and I’ll always be more than proud to have been asked. The veterans flight, food, motel room, and ground transportation is all paid for, all they bring money is for souvenirs. The guardians all pay their own way. KCHF raises funds throughout the year to help defray the cost for the vets to go. Each vet and guardian are given two logo t-shirts, blue for vets and red for guardians, and a windbreaker. A carry on duffle bag is provided as there is no checked luggage. The flight left Saturday at 6:30 am with a rousing send off by family and friends and a flag carrying honor guard.

There were actually two flights as the there were about 90 total in the traveling party so two different airlines were Korean War Veteran Howard Minton stands in rthe Arlington National Cemetary in Washington, D.C. used but wound up in Washington about the same time After breakfast the next morning it was on to the our Nation’s Capital where we were after stops in Houston and the other flight in Phoenix. At met by House Leader Kevin McCarthy’s staff that gave us a tour of the rotunda and we were those stops as we got off the planes we were greeted by cheering strangers as well as in Reaprivileged to be able to enter the house chamber and sit in the house members seats, no gan Airport in Washington. After loading two huge buses, we drove around Washington a pictures allowed. After pictures on the Capitol steps it was off to the Navy Memorial (GO little bit and then were treated to an excellent meal at an American Legion Hall in MaryNAVY), which was special to me. They had a nice but small museum and gift shop; bought land. Then off the hotel and bed time. me a new Navy Flag. Then back on the buses to Fort McHenry near Baltimore for a tour of the Fort made famous by Francis Scott Key’s Star Spangled Banner. It was especially interesting to Howard as he was an artilleryman in the Korean War, were he was wounded by rifle fire, to see the old cannons and the artillery balls that were used to stop the British Fleet.

We flew out of Baltimore later and finally made it back to Bakersfield at 10:30 Monday night.

We were met by a huge crowd and many of the vets were overwhelmed and moved to tears.

It was a once in a lifetime trip for all the vets and guardians that they won’t soon forget. The KCHF staff were well trained, Howard stands with his Brothers in Arms at the Tomb of the Unknown soldier.

The next morning on Sunday after breakfast, Howard Minton at the Korean War Monument everything went off without a hitch and most importantly none of the vets had a fall or stumble which was we visited the Korean War Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Viet Nam Memorial, and the hammered in the guardians heads; safety, safety, safety. Also want to give a shout out to Joe WWII Memorial. Then we went over the Potomac River to the Women in Military Service Memorial, and then on to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the changing of the guard Little from Derby Acres who also went on this trip.

Other WWII and Korean War vets from our area have already gone and they are looking at Arlington Cemetery. The KCHF had wreath that was presented by four of our wheel for any vets on the Westside or Kern County to apply. Then it was on to the Iwo Jima (Marine) Memorial and then we got to spend time you’re a great guy, an honorable man, and a hero in my book. in the Smithsonian Museum of American History. Back on the buses once more to go see See you around Town, the Air Force Memorial, and then finally time to go back to the hotel for a quick nap and a business dinner that night. Howard and I got to play “Gin” (cards) in the room and he beat Randy Miller me soundly. End of a great day and great weather. We had box lunches on the flight over and on the bus between memorial visits. Everything went smoothly, was well organized, and Proud to be an American everyone was amazed at what they saw. Hundreds of photos were taken at each stop.

West Side Health Care to Hire Executive Director Jerry Livingston J.D. Jerry.Taft.Independent@gmail.com The West Side Health Care district voted to hire an Executive Director at a special board meeting held last Thursday, September 25th. The decision came as the Board continues to move aggressively on recommendations that resulted from its recent retreat. Board Members Teri Jordan and Ray Hatch were appointed to a search committee and tasked with developing a job description and potential pay range as part of developing a recruitment package. Given that future plans for the District will include a significant amount of development of new funding sources and construction of new facilities, the board will be looking for an “all-rounder” who is familiar with the health care industry but is capable of handling the business side of running and developing a health care district.

The special meeting was a follow up with the districts consultant Dr. Bill Mathis and included the adoption of a set of new guidelines for the Board.

These guidelines are designed to improve the everyday functioning of the Board covering various areas such as the establishment of five standing committees (Personnel, Finance, Public Relations/Admin, Building/ Facilities and Operations), district business workflow starting with committee reviews of issues prior to their presentation to the Board, relationships with the staff, general business management and the need to prepare an annual strategic plan in advance of the annual budgeting process.

The Taft Independent The board also reviewed the ongoing business operations of the district including the development of a new web site spear headed by Hatch, the need to have regular review and compensation surveys to assure that staff is performing the functions assigned in their job descriptions as well as being fairly compensated for the work actually performed.

The board also began the development of a Director’s handbook, reviewing a mockup prepared by Mathis, this included a discussion regarding the need to hire appropriate legal representation for the District to include attorneys familiar with Health District Law, contract and human resources, as well as Open Meeting laws. Taft College STEM Launches New Pilot STEM Branch for Girls, TC GEMS

LINN Energy Presents Gift to Taft College Foundation at Petroleum Partners Luncheon

On Friday, October 17, 2014, the Taft College STEM Program will be launching a pilot branch of their program, Taft College Girls Enjoying Math and Science (TC GEMS).

A luncheon sponsored by Chevron will occur in the Taft College Quad with 45+ female 9th and 10th grade students from Buena Vista High School, Maricopa High School, and Taft Union High School as well as teachers and counselors from these schools. Female Math and Science Faculty as well as Taft College Administration have also been invited to attend.

During the luncheon, students will first hear from six female STEM professionals with diverse STEM careers in areas such as Drafting, Wildlife Biology, and Engineering.

These professionals, from companies such as Chevron, Aera, KSI, Inc., and the Bureau of Land Management, will discuss their careers, the successes they’ve experienced, and what has been challenging. After hearing from these speakers, students will enjoy lunch and have the opportunity to network with these women in STEM. “We need more people pursuing STEM, and that absolutely includes women. We hope that through these STEM opportunities more young women in our community will see STEM as a wonderful option for them,” notes Rachel Belden, Taft College’s STEM Outreach Activities Coordinator. TC GEMS hopes to encourage girls to pursue STEM career pathways through events like the TC GEMS Luncheon.

“Chevron has been an invaluable partner to Taft College in its support of our STEM initiative,” says Dr. Dena Maloney, Superintendent/President of Taft College. “With the support of Chevron, we will be able to further cultivate the interest in STEM careers among 9th and 10th grade female students. Through events and programs like the TC GEMS, we expect to see these same students in our classrooms in the next four or five years, pursuing degrees in STEM-related fields.”

On Thursday, September 25, 2014, the Taft College Foundation hosted the first Petroleum Partners President’s Luncheon.

The Petroleum Partners is a college support group formed by the Taft College Foundation following the highly successful West Kern Petroleum Summit in October 2013. One of the member benefits is participation in the Petroleum Partner’s Luncheon program.

Nearly fifty executives from the Petroleum Partners member organizations and sponsors of the Taft College Foundation enjoyed lunch and speakers from industry. Taft College Superintendent/President Dr. Dena Maloney opened with a presentation on the economic impact of Taft College to the community, and Taft College’s commitment to workforce development.

An Industry update was provided by Bob Barnes, Executive Vice President of North Operations for California Resources Corporation, formerly Occidental of Elk Hills.

Trent Rosenlieb, Asset Manager for LINN Energy spoke to the group about the merger between Berry Petroleum and LINN Energy and the positive impact it has brought to the community and its workforce. At the conclusion of the luncheon, a check was presented to the Taft College Foundation for $15,000 to benefit the Energy Technology and STEM K-12 Outreach programs at Taft College.

Rosenlieb said, “LINN Energy is happy to partner with Taft College. At LINN Energy, we are connected to our communities. We are dedicated to working in harmony with our neighbors and place a high priority on improving the lives of people in communities where our employees live and work.”

Their character can be contributed to the leadership of many different people, but at the moment we want to highlight Joseph Sanchez. Last Friday, Sanchez led the charge against Arvin with a 4128 win. In the game, he scored three touchdowns with two of them being receiving. Coaches have praised Sanchez for his outstanding leadership skills and big game performances.

“We cannot rely on a rule-book written for a different century.”

By Harold Pease, Ph. D “On issue after issue, we cannot rely on a rule-book written for a different century,” so said President Barack Obama to the United Nations General Assembly on Sept. 24, 2014, presumably referencing the U.S. Constitution. You may recall that the current biggest issue is his having initiated war in Syria by bombing ISIS without the constitutional approval of Congress. This is the third country that he has bombed without congressional approval preceded by Libya and Iraq, which gives him a legacy as a war president. Many recall that he was critical of President George W. Bush for having done the same thing.

All war powers are clearly described in Article I, Section 8 and the President is left with none. Once approved, he can execute the war as commander and chief, but still under the funding limitations imposed by the House of Representatives.

The obvious dig on being restricted to a document “written for a different century,” shows a definite lack of respect for the Constitution that he swore by oath to “preserve, protect and defend” (Article 11, Section 1). Some in Congress considered his having done so in Libya an impeachable offense stating thus in Concurrent resolution H. Con. Res. 107, but Democrats did not wish to confine their president.

Still, the Presidents phrase is a mockery to the Constitution and should be unacceptable and embarrassing to every American, whether said by a Republican or a Democrat.

Ironically the Constitution is designed to harness presidents just like him, and his predecessor George W. Bush, but it will never work if the party in power runs interference for their own constitutional abuser.

It also shows a lack of understanding of the Constitution (whether ignorantly or intentionally), which is based upon human nature and natural law, which does not change from century to century. Man and governments are still beset by the same sins as expressed in all ages. There will always be those that wish to rule over others. Government will always attempt to grow its power. There will always need to be a list of the things governments can do and they will always need to be harnessed to that list. There will always need to be division of power and presidents will always, as James Madison said, “have a propensity for war” and wish to use any military power without consent. And there will always be those who wish to use the force of government to redistribute the wealth so that they can, in effect, purchase elections by “gifting” voters. The magic of the Constitution is that it, outside defense, does not distribute benefits to anyone. These are the reasons that it is said to be outdated by those who wish to take from us our liberties. President Obama’s problem with the Constitution is that it restricts him from doing anything that he wishes and thus his belittling and embarrassing comment before the world.

One of my favorite classes to instruct is Contemporary Political Topics. Students are encouraged to first use the Constitution, then natural law in problem solving, rather than political party or philosophical persuasion. This base is justified because every politician has sworn to “protect, preserve and defend” this document. It is the instrument by which everything should be judged. They love it. Amazingly we have yet to find an issue where the Constitution does not address current problems.

So why should the president have the same restrictions on war as those presidents of a different century? It is because he does not fight on the front lines and is not at real personal risk. It is the sons and daughters of the nation who bleed and die for the cause and it is the taxpayer who funds the war. They, through their representatives in the House of Representatives, elected every two years by those most likely to suffer from the decision, are the ones constitutionally

LARRY MICHAEL MCMAINS, JR. 1961 - 2014

Larry Michael McMains, Jr., “Mike,” was born at West Side District Hospital in Taft on August 26, 1961 to Larry “Mike” McMains and Brenda McMains Collins. Mike died on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at his home in Taft. Mike was raised in Taft and attended Taft schools. Upon graduation from Taft High he attended IBEW electrical school and began a career as a lineman.

He worked for various companies and enjoyed all the experiences that a lineman encountered including assisting a helicopter with setting poles in the mountains. Mike enjoyed hunting with his father and brother and looking for treasures with his metal detector. Mike was a loyal 49ers fan and was able to see a game in San Francisco with his brother, Mark, a diehard Buffalo Bills fan. Mike also loved working with his hands, repairing bicycles, motorcycles or just tinkering in his workshop. Looking for Indian arrowheads with his friend, Kurt Streich, was another hobby of his. Mike’s beloved grandmother, Beulah Cochran, preceded him in death; also his best friends, Jeff Decker and Don Bradley. Mike is survived by his son, Brendon Neill; father, Mike McMains, Sr.; stepmother, Johnnie McMains; mother, Brenda Collins; stepfather, Ed Collins; brother, Mark and Jo McMains; and nephews, Mark, Jr. and Cade McMains. A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 6, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. in the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home Chapel, 501 Lucard St., Taft. empowered to make the offering. War would than never be taken lightly. Suffering and cost to the nation would always have its proper place in the equation. When the war goes on too long the President must justify to the House the reasons why, and if the peoples’ representatives do not accept his reasons, funding can be limited incrementally to bring an end to it or cutting it off entirely. In short, the people, rather than just one man, make the decision to go to war.

As it was under George W. Bush, and now is under Barack Obama, one man and his military machine, both benefiting from war, decide entry and exit, not the people..

The “rule book written in a different century” is still as reliable as before on protecting us on entry and exit of war. What we need today are presidents and legislators that love and use it. In this quest we are embarrassingly in short supply.

Edward “Ed” William Davis Ed was born on May 8, 1938, the youngest of 8 siblings, in Shafter, Ca and left us on the afternoon of September 27, 2014, to play his guitar in heaven, forever, with Jesus. Ed was preceded in death by his father, Zolia Franklin Davis and mother, Hazel Marie Nelms Davis; his sisters, Silvia, Lee Audria, Margaret, Barbara, Mary and Jean; his brothers Frank and Orville; and son Ronnie Davis. Ed left behind his beautiful wife of 48 wonderful years of marriage, Donna Davis; daughter, Bonita “Bonnie” and her husband Terry Bullard of Maricopa, Ca; son Larry Davis of Bakersfield, Ca; son Eddie Davis of Taft, Ca; and daughter Susan Davis of Taft, Ca. Nine grandchildren who always found that Grandpa was their biggest supporter and only spoke words of encouragement; eleven great grandchildren that Grandpa, no matter his age or condition, would make his way to the floor to play and visit with them.

Ed joined the Army in 1957, where he completed two tours in Germany. Ed was honorably discharged from the Army in 1961. After returning home, Ed would meet his future wife, Donna, in 1964, in Shafter, Ca where he was a member of a local band and played the guitar. Ed later moved his family to Taft, Ca in 1971, where he remained in the same house until his passing. Some of Ed’s past times included; playing the guitar along with his wife who plays the piano, going to church, and watching all of his children; grandchildren and great grandchildren play various types of sports where Grandpa was their number one fan. Ed also coached little league for several seasons as his children were growing up. Because of the kind, gentle, unconditional loving man that Ed was, he helped mold each of us into the people we are today. Ed has been deemed his families “hero” because of his long, courageous battle with cancer. Every day Ed would explain to his family that he needed to get up and move around so he could build up his strength!

The family would generously like to invite those who wish to pay their respects to come join them at Ed’s viewing on Friday, October 3rd at Erickson & Brown Funeral Home in Taft from 3:00 to 8:00 pm. Services for Ed will be held on Saturday, October 4th at 11:00am, at the First Southern Baptist Church located at 120 Pico St. in Taft.
