The Historic Fort Holds Holiday Gift Show and Dinner The Historic Fort will hold its annual Holiday Gift Show and Dinner on Thursday, December 5th at 5 p.m.

The show will feature a gift show from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m, with dinner served until 8 p.m.

Dinner will feature oven roasted beef sandwich, salad and coffee or tea.

It’s that time of year to shop!

Black Friday is next Friday. I know most people hate shopping that day but love the prices. Make sure during this shopping season you keep your eyes open for the bad guys. When loading and unloading, no matter where you are be aware of your surroundings. Last week was the Midnight release of the Play Station 4. That night there were several robbers out and about trying to get the new PS4’s. While shopping, also try not to leave presents in your car but if you do make sure that you hide them. There is always a chance if you go to the Valley Plaza, Maya Theater, or Walmart that when you return from shopping, your car will be gone.

All of these bad things could happen anywhere so why chance it and Shop Taft. Taft’s Big K has some great Black Friday deals and no matter where you shop in Taft you can probably get a parking spot fairly close. If you’re not sure what someone wants, you can always get them a gift certificate to the Fox Theatre, Rejuv 10 23, Acme Jewelry and so many others. My favorites are gift certificates to Pizza Factory and OT Cookhouse because nothing shows love like a good meal.

Get Your Sweet On is making Fudge every day so Fudge is always the perfect gift or snack. One gift most women want is their hair done so get them a gift certificate to one of our great hair salons.

If you love Antique gifts, check out Old’s Cool, Friendly Antiques, Victoria’s, and Braun’s Antiques. Used to be Paul’s Bikes Shop has a great selection of bikes and accessories. There is a new store that is going to open next to Jack’s Flower Shop in December. If you’re going to have a Christmas Party there are so many great places to have it here in Taft. To name a few there is the Rec, the Fort, Taft Petroleum Club, the Moose Lodge, Hacienda backroom, OT Cookhouse, La Salsa backroom, Oasis upstairs, Masonic Lodge, and American Legion. Blue Jeans and Bling specializes in girl parties.

Getting into the Christmas spirit as December knocks on our door there are so many festive events. To name a few we have the Taft Christmas Parade which is Monday, December 2nd at 6pm , Wednesday December 4th is Taft Industry Night at the Taft Petroleum Club, Friday December 6th is Christmas Cruise Night with Santa at 6pm, Monday December 9th is free photos with Santa at Westside Furniture at 6pm, Tuesday December 10th is the Taft College Bookstore Open house at 4pm and Thursday December 12th the Downtown Business Association Mixer is at 6pm.

The last few years the Allens on East San Emidio Street and Lights by the Whites on Hilltop had the best light around.

Like most families with a little one we checked them out most nights. I’m sure everyone remembers the house where the Community Garden is now 30 years back, it had lights everywhere. As a kid the Hill was lit up like Disneyland.

Most houses on the hill have lights up but there but there are a few that do not. I had a friend that lived up on the hill several years ago that had lights up and several of his neighbors got on to him for not having enough lights up. Lights are not cheap and neither is electricity but they sure look nice at night. I hope more lights are up this year. The lights will light up your neighborhood making it safer. Plus good families are out driving around looking at lights making your neighborhood safe, much like a mobile neighborhood watch.

A time to honor and remember loved ones and friends who have been a special part of our lives During the holiday season, Optimal Hospice Foundation will host our Annual “Light Up A Life Celebration”.

The celebration includes a personal reflection by a hospice family member, the reading of the memorial names by hospice nurses & volunteers, candle lighting, inspirational music, and the lighting of our Tree of Life. The Tree of Life is adorned with ornaments representing a light in memory of loved ones and friends.

The Celebration is free to attend and open to everyone, not just those touched by hospice care. For a minimum $10 donation an ornament with your loved ones name will be placed on our Tree of Live and if received prior to the event date their name will be read during the Celebration.

Kern Animal Shelter Saving Animals Lives Did you know that Kern County Animal Services has a wonderful program that helps save the lives of hundreds of animals each year? It’s our foster program, and we are always looking for interested people to become certified foster parents.

Opening your heart and home temporarily to an animal from Kern County Animal Services is a the perfect way to show your passion for helping animals in need. Many of the animals who enter the shelter every year face challenges they can overcome only with the loving support of our wonderful foster volunteers. Fostering need not be a longterm commitment. Sometimes we need short-term foster homes for as little as two weeks or less.

As a foster parent, you may help an animal with special medical or behavioral needs, such as puppies or kittens under eight weeks of age who need special feeding, care and socialization, or animal mothers who are pregnant or nursing litters. Fostering a homeless animal provides rehabilitation in a nurturing home setting and helps to directly prepare the animals to be adopted into a loving forever home.

With the help of the community, Kern County Animal Services was able to save a cat that had allegedly been trapped in a tall pine tree for over a week.

Kern County Animal Services first received a report for a cat trapped in a pine tree earlier this week. Animal Control Officers arrived at the tree located near businesses at Niles and Mt. Vernon Avenue to find what appeared to be a scared adult cat lodged nearly 30 feet up in the tree.

“We were very concerned about Piney’s well-being,” stated Senior Animal Control Officer Tracy Wolfe. “We knew we were going to have to try several different options to see if we could get him out of the tree.

The officers attempted to lure the kitty down with wet food.

Unfortunately, the kitty was not able to come down on his own and a call was made to the Kern County Fired Department to see if the Department could assist with a ladder. Kern County Fire was happy to respond and provided a ladder that would reach the height of the cat. Staff was hopeful that the cat would then be able to be removed from the tree. However, the cat was startled by the noise of the ladder and climbed higher into the tree.

Over the course of the next few days, officers with the Animal Services Department and several community members continued to monitor the cat in the tree, affectionately known as “Piney” and provide him with food and water.

On October 30th, staff received a call that a citizen with their own vehicle, a “boom truck,” was willing to come out and try to get Piney out of the tree. Staff met with Marvin Fuller, from M & S Security Services and one attempt was made in the evening to retrieve Piney. Everyone met at the scene again this morning and this time, Piney was successfully and safely removed from the tree.

Piney is currently resting comfortable at Kern County Animal Services. He was evaluated by Kern County Animal Services’ Veterinarian and found to be in pretty good health, although a bit dehydrated. He was treated for dehydration and will be placed up for adoption after he is released from his stray hold period.

“We are so thankful that the community came together to help us give Piney that second chance he deserves,” added Wolfe.

Los Padres National Forest officials today announced that nominations are now being accepted for 11 positions on the Pacific Southwest Region California Recreation Resource Advisory Committee (RRAC).

Nominations will be accepted through December 8, 2013.

Officials are seeking: Five members of the public who will represent the following recreation interest groups: winter non-motorized recreation, such as snowshoeing, cross country, downhill skiing and snowboarding; summer motorized recreation, such as motorcycles, boaters, and off-highway vehicles; summer non-motorized recreation, such as backpacking, horseback riding, mountain biking, canoeing and rafting.

Three people who represent the following recreation interest groups: non-motorized outfitters and guides; local environmental groups.

Three people who represent the following perspectives: State tourism; Indian tribes; local government.

These term positions will begin March 2014 when the current three-year term appointments expire. Current members who have only served one term may reapply. Terms for the current appointed alternates also expire March 2014 and they may apply for a permanent term. Alternates for these positions may be selected from the applications received. Alternates do not take a member’s place in their absence; they are appointed to fill a vacancy should the member find it necessary to leave the RRAC. The RRAC provides recommendations on recreation fees for federal lands within the state of California. This includes implementing or eliminating fees for Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Forest Service recreation sites and services, expanding or limiting the recreation fee program, and fee level changes.

Recommendations from the RRAC do not supersede the legally established decision authority of the Forest Service or BLM; however, RRACs help federal agencies gather public opinion about recreation fees and programs. All recommendations are carefully considered.

Liberty Under Fire The Kennedy Assassination’s sealed files.

I add my voice to the hundreds of others demanding that the government finally release the thousands of documents yet in government, mostly CIA, vaults dealing with one of America’s most horrific tragedies, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, November 22, 1963. A fifty-year wait is long enough!!

The controversy stems from the unpublished portion of the Warren Commission’s records, which were initially sealed for 75 years (one life time) or until 2039, reportedly to protect “innocent persons who could otherwise be damaged because of their relationship with participants in the case.” The Freedom of Information Act of 1966 was to make specific information available but how does one know what to ask for unless one knows first that it exists? Extracting information from the government one piece at a time has been too slow. Holding back information amplified the perception that the government must have something to hide.

Dissatisfaction with the Warren Commission’s findings came early and it suffered from a touch of illegitimacy, as the person who benefited most from “The White House Down” was the one who became president and created the investigating commission. Congress, not Lyndon B. Johnson, should have created the investigating organization. None the less, investigative panels followed over the years with mixed results: The Ramsey Clark Panel, Rockefeller Commission, Church Committee, and finally the United States House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) in 1976. The HSCA concluded that “President John F. Kennedy was probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy” but it agreed on little else. Moreover, it is doubtful that they had all the documents pertaining thereto. The FBI and CIA tended to respond only to specific requests for information. They, like the Warren Commission, did their investigation mostly in secret. Unbelievably they too sealed their evidence for 50 years under Congressional rules. Still, unlike other assassinations of the 60’s decade, controversy followed this one with marked consistency. In 1992 Congress passed legislation creating the Assassination Records Review Board to collect all the existing documentation relating to the Kennedy and other assassinations.

To their credit millions of pages of formerly secret records were declassified and everything else was to be released in 2019. They also conducted numerous interviews now available to researchers. Some were especially disturbing.

“Navy photo developer Sandra Kay Spencer told the ARRB in sworn testimony that the autopsy photos in the Archives were not those she processed on the weekend after the assassination. Autopsy photographer John Stringer similarly disavowed photos purported to be those he took of JFK’s brain during a supplementary exam. Other medical interviews contained similarly astounding allegations” (ARRB Medical Testimony, Mary Ferrell Foundation). Dr. Charles Crenshaw, a third year resident at Parkland Hospital, and an eyewitness to everything that happened to Kennedy in the trauma room had never been interviewed by any governing agency.

In his ABC 20/20 interview in 1992 (in my possession) he convincingly shares with Barbara Walters and Hugh Downs the following. The shots to the head and neck were entry wounds thus came from the front, not from the back as the Warren Commission had concluded. The back of Kennedy’s head was blown out and the neck wound was the size of ones little finger just large enough for the trachea. Photographs of the autopsy from Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland, after the body had been flown home, showed a neck wound three inches wide, presumably attempting to show an exit wound which would support shots coming from behind and the lone gunman theory. This is important as Crenshaw claims to be the last person to see Kennedy before removal from the room. Someone tampered with the wound.

Kern County Probation Department Looking Out for High Risk Offenders

Felony and repeat misdemeanor DUI offenders are over represented in traffic crashes involving alcohol or other drugs, often with tragic results. A $153,092.00 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to the Kern County Probation Department will be making sure that these worstof-the-worst offenders are complying with all court orders.

“Driving under the influence (DUI) continues to be a major traffic safety concern for Kern County Probation, and law enforcement agencies,” said Chief Probation Officer David Kuge. “Bakersfield continues to rank in the top three, and Kern County in the top half of alcohol-involved collisions based on population. Repeat felony DUI probationers are among the most serious, dangerous offenders, and require intensive supervision. The ability to focus on this high-risk group through the DUI Offender Grant has allowed the Probation Department to utilize strategies and activities aimed at reducing re-offense, and increasing compliance with probation terms that would otherwise have been impossible with average caseloads of 300 offenders.”

The grant will fund officers to intensely monitor drivers on probation for felony DUI or multiple misdemeanor DUI convictions. Supervision for these high-risk offenders will include unannounced home searches, random alcohol and drug testing and monitoring to ensure compliance with court-ordered DUI education and treatment programs.

The Intensive Probation Supervision for High-Risk Felony and Repeat DUI Offenders grant is aimed at reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol and other drug related collisions in the county. In 2010, 45 people were killed and 694 people were injured in such crashes in Kern County.

The Kern County Probation Department will also collaborate with other local law enforcement agencies to conduct DUI/Driver license checkpoints and warrant service operations targeting individuals who fail to make court appearances after DUI arrests.

Drunk driving is one of America’s deadliest crimes. In 2011, nationally 9,778 people died in highway crashes involving a driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. In California, the number killed was 774.

Funding for the grant is from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

A few days later the young Dr. Crenshaw was in Parkland Hospital in Dallas again when Lee Harvey Oswald was brought in. While working on him he was tapped on the shoulder to answer a phone call from the White House. It was President Lyndon B. Johnson requesting a deathbed confession from Oswald. The show 20/20 obtained White House schedule and concluded that it could have happened as Crenshaw claimed. None of this was in the Warren Commission’s report. Dr. Phillip E. Williams, also in the room, confirmed the Johnson call (The Doctor’s World, by Lawrence K. Altman, M.D, NY Times, May 26, 1992).

Why wait? By withholding or resisting the release of any documentation rightfully fuels conspiracy theorist. In this sense the federal government is the origin of such theories.

For most it probably does not mater who conspired to kill Kennedy whether the CIA, communists, (Oswald claimed to be a Marxist), organized crime, President Johnson, who was destined to be dropped from the ticket in the next election, or even a lone gunman, as it happened so long ago. What we want is all the documentation made available and we want it now!

Obituary

Anthony (Tony) David Green August 15, 1979 - November 12, 2013 Tony was born in Santa Rosa, California to Timothy and Jeannie Doolittle. He came to live with his Uncle Steve and Aunt Debbie Green on Easter day April 22, 1984 and was adopted along with his brother, Troy Green, on August 12, 1994. He was a sweet and loving boy who always had a smile for you. He loved sports and hanging out with family and friends. Tony attended both Taft Union High School and Frasier Mountain High School. He worked periodically in the Oilfields.

Recently, Tony found the Lord and was baptized. He is preceded in death by his mother, Jeannie Doolittle.

He leaves behind a daughter, Sarah Dawn Green of Taft, CA, mother and father, Debbie and Steve Green of Taft, CA, sister Tammy Alden of Bakersfield, CA, brother Timothy Doolittle (wife Laura) of Bakersfield, CA, sister Tina Leikam (husband Bob) of Taft, CA, sister Tonya Green of Dustin Acres, CA, sister Tammy Capela (husband Mike) of Taft, CA, sister Misty Doolittle of Taft, CA, and brother Troy Green of Las Vegas, Nevada. He also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. RIP Tony, loving son, father, brother, uncle, and cousin. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Tony’s life which will be held in the banquet room of OT Cookhouse at 205 N. 10th St. in Taft, CA, on November 30, 2013 at 1-4pm.
