Taft California “Home of the Taft Oilworkers Monument” “Gateway to the Carrizo Plain National Monument”

Taft Libraries to Feature Astronomy Program International award-winning astronomer and former NASA consultant Kevin Manning is bringing Star Tour USA 2013 to Taft on Thursday, December 5. Astronomy for Everyone: Size and Scale of the Universe will be presented in the Taft College Cougar Room at 6:00 p.m. The public is invited to enjoy a virtual journey into the cosmos to look at the very small and the very large. Weather permitting, they will also be able to view the stars through a powerful custom-designed telescope after the presentation.

This engaging program for all ages, which promotes scientific literacy, is a joint presentation of the Friends of the Taft College Library and the Westside Friends of the Taft Branch Library. For more information, call the Taft Branch at 661-763-3294.

The Historic Fort Holds Holiday Gift Show and Dinner The Historic Fort will hold its annual Holiday Gift Show and Dinner on Thursday, December 5th at 5 p.m.

The show will feature a gift show from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m, with dinner served until 8 p.m.

Dinner will feature oven roasted beef sandwich, salad and coffee or tea.

By John Swearengin Taft Industry Night at the Taft Petroleum Club is this Wednesday.

Dinner is only $12.00 and includes meat, beans, bread, salad, dessert, and door prizes. 50/50 raffle and drink specials. Doors open at 5 and Dinner is at 7:30. Last month the great Asian Experience sponsored Industry Night. To advertise your business bring a prize and tape your business card to it. More changes If you’re a NFL fan like myself, you might have noticed it has changed a lot the last few years. These changes are not good ones. The NFL has some great Quarterbacks like RG3, Payton Manning and a few others but overall there does not seem to be all the great players there were in past years. The attitudes of many players are horrible. There is always the amazing player on the field but a horrible person off the field. Payton Manning seems like one of the last good old boys left.

On Sunday Nights Bob Costas always has his crazy rants at halftime that are not worth watching. On a halftime broadcast I want to hear about good hits, stats, and other games. I do not want to hear about his opinion on the Redskins, Bullying, or his other rants. Bullying is wrong and so are racial comments but all this is over most of our heads.

Most of us have never played in the NFL or even College Football so we can’t say too much about what we know off the field in the NFL. Ray Lewis and Michael Vick have done way worse things and people did not care but things are changing these days.

Kids these days can’t play tag, they have to play freeze tag. Most parks got rid of teeter totters and merry go rounds. The days of Dodge Ball and butt warmer are long gone. It is a law for kids to wear helmets on their bikes but I can’t say much about that because that is actually a good law.

A good friend and I reminisce about the old Taft days a lot. Now that we have kids we talk about what we should do, shouldn’t do, or can’t do that we did as kids. Most of our childhood friends have moved away from Taft. I still talk to several of them and most of them say they miss Taft but will never move back. They say they will not come back because of reasons like their family moved away, no Hospital, no job in their field, too hot, no new housing, everyone goes to Bakersfield so they’ll stay in Bakersfield, and probably the number 1 reason, their wife will not move here.

People are always making comments about how many great people have moved to Bakersfield. I know it is just the way of life but so many amazing Taft people have passed away in the last few years. My Grandma Potter and her Church friends did so much for Taft and now they have almost all passed away. There was a huge group of seniors that met at McDonalds every morning when I was in High School.

Rodney Grantham and I would talk to them every morning and now most of them are gone.

I worked a couple of years at 11-C Market. It was a great job for a young guy. I worked with so many good people and got to know so many good customers. Scott and Heather Niblett were great owners and have such an amazing family. People came from everywhere to buy meat from Dave Borrecco and Colleen Garrett. So many of those great customers and people have now passed away. One of those great customers, Mary Dillard passed away a few months ago. She was a great neighbor, made the best White Elephant cheese dip, worked so hard on many Oildorados, told the best Taft stories, and truly was a great friend to anyone who knew her.

On a very positive note I was honored to attend a 90th Birthday for one of the best ladies in Taft, Helen Swearingen. Helen and all of her family are as good as they come, even though they spell their last name wrong. (That is a Swearengin/ Swearingen inside joke). I saw several amazing Taftians at the party I have not seen in years. Mrs. Wilma McElmurry was there, her late husband, Mac and her were two of my favorite 11-C customers. The Taft Godfather Pete Gianopulos was there. He is the go to guy about any Taft History and is loved by all Taftians. It was great to hear lots of the old Taft stories from everyone.

I love hearing about how people ended up in Taft. Times have changed and people do not end up in Taft like they use too.

After the party, I drove by several of my friends old houses, old 11-C customers houses, and around some of the places that were talked about that day. Most of the houses were in horrible shape and some were even gone. We have lost so many things here and most were not replaced. Some of the stories I heard at the party were about the old 11-C Camp and Standard swimming pool and they are long gone.

Taft is slowly getting better and the future looks bright. Randy Miller always says, “We need to live in Taft, not just reside here.” I agree 100%. Get out and support our stores, restaurants, events, schools, rec, clubs, etc. I did not like it but it was a sign of the times when we lost Hallmart Foods and 11-C Market but it was probably our fault when we lost the great Italian Restaurant Fiorina’s on B Street.

I mentioned all these names because they are just a few of the many Taftians that made Taft great or are still making Taft great. Think how many hundreds of people worked for Ralph or Scott Niblett at 11-C Market. They helped so many of us grow up and learn so much.

A lot of our changes in this world are not for the good or they are a double edged sword. As much as I like video games, remote controls, cell phones, even our right to have “Freedom of Speech,” all of these are

Letters to the Editor A Midway Elementary School Student and the JFK Assassination Late in the morning of Nov. 22, 1963, a knock came on the north door of Room 3 at Midway School in Fellows. At that time, Midway had two kindergarten classrooms and then one room for each grade up to eighth grade. Room 1 was first grade, Room 2 was second grade The author and the late Mrs. Ridgway, and so on. his third-grade teacher at Midway School.

I was an eightyear-old third grader Photo by her daughter Teryl Ridgway. in Mrs. Ridgway’s Room 3 that day and it was Mrs. Ridgway who answered the knock, opening the door that led to the interior grassy area between the two wings of classrooms. A giant eighth-grader was at the door and told Mrs. Ridgway something that was obviously unsettling to the teacher that would be my favorite teacher of all time (I was teacher’s pet that year…).

After closing the door, Mrs. Ridgway walked to the front of the room and said she had something sad to say to our small class. I can’t recall her exact words but of course it was something about President Kennedy being shot and and then passing away. I may not recall Mrs. Ridgway’s exact words but I do remember the tears she had as she told us third-graders what happened in Dallas that morning.

Being eight, I wasn’t really sure what was going on but it was something big as all the grown-ups were all in a very, very serious mood. We were sent home for the day, leaving school about the time we would be eating our 20-cent hot lunch in the cafeteria.

I walked away from Midway east to our new home on 2nd Street with my two best friends, Tim Caudill (his dad was the butcher at the Fellows grocery store) and Leonard the Paiute Indian. The term “Native American,” while true, wasn’t used in 1963. They were Indians and that’s just the way it was back then.

Over the next few days, the shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald by Jack Ruby was live on TV, then of course the sad, sad funeral of JFK. It was all in black-and-white on our TV, on all three channels we could get from Bakersfield. That would be UHF channels 17, 23 and 29. You didn’t click on the channel, you had to turn a UHF knob until the channel would sort of come in, depending on the antenna your dad had put on the the roof.

The death of the president was a major blow to the nation, world and little Fellows of course but to men of my dad’s generation, it was staggering. JFK was a World War II vet like my dad and most of my friend’s dads. It was a fantastic time in America then, wages were high and going higher, prices were low and America was the unquestioned bright light of freedom in the world, at or near its apogee in power and influence.

In the spirit of the season, I want to say just how thankful I am that I grew up in Taft as it was a wonderful, memory filled time of life for me and all of my friends. As much as things have changed I couldn’t imagine a better place to raise my daughter.

I am thankful for the people who are staying positive and who are trying to help Taft have a bright future. Stay positive Taft.

Esther Livingston was awarded Third Place in the Close-up or Scientific category with “Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly.” Both Karen White and Arthur Tamayo, first-time exhibitors, were awarded Honorable Mention, Karen in the Animals category with “Two of a Kind” and Arthur in the Planes, Trains or Automobiles category with “Old Wrecker.” All three photographs may be viewed at West Kern Oil Museum during the Camera Club’s 80th Anniversary Exhibit.

The 80th Anniversary Exhibit will be opened with a reception on Saturday afternoon, November 16, 1:00-3:30, at the Museum. There will also be an exhibit of digital images by club members, some of which are pictured here. Please join us for an afternoon of photography and light refreshments!

TUHS Students, Staff Honored at Rally

Taft Union High School junior Suzette Flud was honored as most improved student and Gary Morris, the retiring director of Maintenance, Operation and Transportation, was feted as the staff member of the year at the fall Renaissance rally Wednesday November 20th in Mullen gym. The rally celebrates academics.

Suzette improved her grade point average by 1.43 points, according to Greg Goossen, Renaissance team coordinator.

Suzette was not happy with her fall semester grades during her sophomore year. She said, “I’m going to try harder. I didn’t want to make the same mistake.” She said she dropped down from English honors and World History honors to college prep and changed another class so she could begin her day with an art class since she loved to draw. “I did a lot better.”

Still, she was surprised that her grade point average improved more than any other Taft High student. “I was very shocked.”

She was sick and not planning to attend school the day of the rally but her mom convinced her to go. “She kept it a secret for a week,” Flud said in amazement. Flud received a $150 Visa gift card and a bag of art supplies from Renaissance. She plans to take a web design class from Taft College online in the spring and then attend TC after she graduates from TUHS. Then she plans to attend the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland for a career in graphic design.

He served on the Board of Trustees for 10 years before accepting his current position, which he has held for 91/2 years. A professional photographer, he takes school dance photos and team sports portraits as well as donating action sports photos to the yearbook. He also founded the school’s trap shooting club and he volunteers with the Future Farmers of America. He plans to continue the photography and advising the trap-shooting club during retirement. He and his wife Coleen have been married for 35 years and have a daughter, Cory, and three grandchildren, who were all there to congratulate him.

His avocation was appropriate because the theme of the rally was “Duck Dynasty,” and included camouflage shirts and plenty of duck calls.

Dozens of Top Cats — students with a GPA above 4.0 in the spring 2013 semester — were honored.

Students nominated by staff for good attitudes and staff nominated by students wore T-shirts they received for their positive attitudes.

The most entertaining aspect of the rally was the last half hour when a hypnotist, who goes by the stage name Hypnotwyz, hypnotized student volunteers and instructed them to sleep, lick dripping ice cream off their forearms, watch the funniest movie they had ever seen, then the saddest, tour a haunted house, model, and dance.

Several of the students said they remembered very little from their hypnotic-induced antics. Hypnotwyz said they would have the best sleep of their life afterward and senior Sierra Holmes said, “That was the best sleep ever. It felt like I was asleep for the entire night each time (he put me to sleep).” Sophomore Jeremy Wilmer added, “I felt like I was dreaming. I slept like a baby last night (the following night).

I had slobber all over my pillow.”

Miller Time Thanksgiving Day in Taft HI Everyone,

Turkey day has finally arrived and brought a little bit of weather with it. Not much rain as I write this, but enough to start knocking down the dust that has covered everything over the past six months or so. I think from my own perspective we’d use a lot less ground water if we didn’t have to wet everything down once in awhile so our lawns and plants can grow without being covered from the sun. The rain makes our homes and commercial buildings a lot brighter and cleaner looking. Whether it is global cooling or warming our weather sure has changed.

Back east is just getting pounded with rain, flooding, tornados, snow, sleet, hail, and horrible winds. But ask them back there if they’d like to live in California, heck no, we have earthquakes; go figure. Living in Taft year around isn’t so bad after all.

I’ve been watching some football lately, since baseball is on hiatus. I like college ball better than the pro’s, but it is still in your face, knock’em down and gloat over them, “hey it’s all about me not the team” attitude that I really think is getting worse and worse. As a former lineman, how about the guys running with or catching the ball giving them some credit, since they don’t get much in the way of TV time.

The stadiums are packed every weekend with knuckle head fans that shout out when someone is laid out and carted off the field. So if the fans are cheering and egging them on and rewarding them with applause when they make their ridiculous little dances, it will probably never go away. If they would start ‘micing’ the players, letting us hear what is really being said on the field, I think there would be a whole lot of embarrassed folks. I don’t want it to be sissy ball, but it would sure be nice to see sportsmanship brought back to the game. I wait for one game every year and that is the “Army/Navy Game” this year on Dec 14th. One of my bucket list items is to go back and see that game in person, hopefully next year. The pomp and pageantry when all the cadets file in, the clean games, the sportsmanship that is played, and both teams going to each other’s respec-

tive sidelines at the end of the game to stand tall to listen to their alma mater school songs; there’s nothing better in sports.

Naturally I prefer Navy, but after four years in the Navy, I can be a little preferential. “GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY”.

As I have been watching the games lately, one thing I have really noticed is the Nike ‘swoosh’ on everyone’s attire; coaches, players, sidelines folks, maybe not the ref ’s yet. The Nike logo is even on most of the footballs. That is a lot of swoosh’s around the college circuit and the pro leagues. Can you imagine what Nike must be paying to provide those logo’s ?? You can get a hint by the price of their shoes and clothing. It is a subtle form of advertising that is becoming so common. Golfers are plastered with logo’s on their shirts and hats. Baseball has the rolling banners behind the batter’s box, basketball has small logo’s on the uniforms, I don’t watch much hockey, if at all, so can’t say much about that. Tennis is starting with logo’s on their clothing.

That is why advertising types get paid the big bucks; product placement !! They sneak those ads into our daily lives wherever we are out and about. You just can’t get away from them.

While I’m on this rant, I really am getting tired of watching the same commercials over and over and over again when watching a game or a TV show. I really get irritated at all those Viagra type commercials; they are on as much as the Mor Furniture commercials. I know that it costs a lot to produce a commercial but do we have to be saturated with them. It just makes me upset with the product and makes me want to never try or buy their product ever. Their psychology is working the reverse on me, how about you ?? How much would your next automobile really cost if they took all the advertising dollars out of the price ?? There is a lot of auto and truck advertising on TV. As we cruise into the holiday season, please make a concerted effort to give your local business a shot at your Christmas shopping dollars. While your local merchants can’t make the TV ad buys or radio commercials, they may have what you want at a very good price. Factoring in the cost of time and gas to go out of town, that slightly higher price might be more attractive.

Remember this, when you send your kids into your local merchants to donate to their team, event, or fund raising effort. The internet and Bakersfield don’t send anything back to Taft by way of sales taxes or donations when you buy from them, ever. You may not be able to buy everything you need in Taft but there are plenty of things that you can buy, give them the chance to earn your business.

This past year has been pretty good, but hopefully next year will be a banner year. New housing, CCF opening, a new motel, new businesses on the rails to trails, industrial park expanding, and if the environmentalists and your state legislators get out of the way, we can frack our way to prosperity and no more dependence on foreign oil. It will then be a very good year. Hope you have enjoyed your gathering with your family wherever it may have been, and hopefully you are all safe, sound, and healthy.

Liberty Under Fire A Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer, Not Turkey Day

Our first Congress wanted a national day of “thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.” Congress directed George Washington to select such a day in one of the very first laws passed by both bodies.

In obedience to the will of the people, he selected Thursday the 26th of November as that day of “public thanksgiving and prayer” and established its purpose. This day he said was “to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks….”

He proceeded to specifically identify some of these blessings “for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the original and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted; for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.”

He saw strength in the prayer aspect of the new national holiday when he wrote, “And also that we

may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplication to the great Lord and Ruler of nations, ….” He then humbly sought forgiveness for national transgressions as well. We “beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgression; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations,.…”

He, himself, humbly implored God for help in performing “our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our national Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discretely and faithfully executed and obeyed; ….”

Then he implored God “to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and generally, to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.”

The Thanksgiving Proclamation ended, “Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the third day of October, A. D. 1789. George Washington Those who reduce this holiday to merely “Turkey Day” undermine its true and uplifting meaning.

Again, it is a day of Thanksgiving and Prayer. Let us take this moment to thank God for the liberties we still have, and to ask forgiveness for our departures from the core values expressed in this proclamation, and in the Constitution. Let us resolve to restore them to prominence before they are lost, not by an enemy from without, but by our own ignorance and neglect from within.

Life Milestones

Jack and Jean Turner (Then) Jack H. & Jeanne M. (Will) Turner of Taft celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with a luncheon in their honor at the Taft Petroleum Club.

The couple was married November 29, 1963, in Buena Park, CA. Their attendants were Darlene Bayard of Fullerton CA, sister of the bride, and Dempsey Gann of Hot Springs, AR, cousin of the groom.

Jean is a certified X-ray technician who is still working and employed at the Federal Prison in Taft.

Jack and Jean Turner (Now) Jack was employed by Chevron USA retiring after 30 plus years of service including offshore.

Both enjoy church, volunteer work, walking and traveling when they slow down, and especially enjoying time with their family and grandchildren.

The Turner’s have three children: Mike Turner, Kevin Turner and Karen (Turner) Barrett. Eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
