The fall session of Grandma’s Attic Storytime has begun at the Taft Branch Library and will continue every Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. through November 19.

Aimed at 5 to 8 year-olds, Grandma’s Attic offers an old trunk full of surprises and stories presented by a different volunteer reader each week. Children who participate will receive a form to return to their teacher for credit in their school reading program. Preschool Storytime, for 3 to 5 year-olds, takes place weekly on Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. Parents are always welcome to attend, or may enjoy some library or computer time while their child is occupied.

Taft Chamber of Commerce Annual Fishing Derby Saturday November 12th The Chamber of Commerce Annual Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, November 12, beginning at 6:00AM. Orchel Krier, this year’s Chairman for the event Commerce has announced the Derby will be held at Buena Vista Lake.

Krier, Board member for the Chamber of Commerce, also announced the chance to win $20,000 will be offered again this year.

“The Chamber’s Fishing Derby always is great fun, and we gave away the $20,000 grand prize a few years ago. It could happen again!” stated Chairman Krier.

Fishermen of all ages are invited to compete in the Derby. The entry fee for adults is $20, for children 14 and under it is $10. There is a grand prize of $1,000 for the heaviest trout caught and prizes in each age group. Entry forms are available at the Chamber Office, 400 Kern Street in Taft, or at Bob’s Bait Bucket at 2131 S. Chester Avenue in Bakersfield.

The gates at Lake Evans open for the Derby at 6:00AM, on Saturday, the 12th, and fishing will continue until 2:00 p.m. Awards will be announced at 2:15 p.m.

All fishing laws will be observed, and no observers are allowed to enter during the Derby’s duration.

Taft Wine Club Kicks-Off at Black Gold November 17th Paso Robles Wines to Debut

Local wine lovers will be able to enjoy fine wines from the Paso Robles wine growing region on Thursday, November 17th when Black Gold Cafe and Deli will host it’s first wine club event.

The event will feature red and white wines from the famous coastal wine growing area, with a discussion on each wine and a its uniqueness.

A Sharp Piece of Awesome Community Poetry Slam On November 18th, at 6:00p.m. the Taft College Literary Magazine Club will be holding a community poetry slam at Black Gold Cafe & Deli. Please arrive by 6:15 to receive people’s choice ballot. (Everyone votes!)

Taft City Council Report

By Kent Miller Taft City Councilmembers made quick-work of a short and non-controversial agenda at their meeting Tuesday night.

Six of nine items which required a yes or no were covered in the consent calendar, where passage came with one 5-to-0 vote.

And no one spoke at the public hearing on a recommendation for the city to purchase tax-defaulted properties at 108 4th St. And 111 Center St. For a total of $4,400 in grant funds. It also passed 5-to-0.

Bids rejected The council briefly discussed then approved rejection of all bids without cause for the Rails to Trails Phase 2 project. The five bids received were at least $56,000 – or more than 15 percent – over the Transportation Development Act funds allocated by Kern Council of Governments for the project.

The phase, which covers the area from Hillard Street to 100 feet west of Sandy Creek, will be re-advertised. The city will use its own forces to construct portions of the project and put the remainder out-to-bid, with a maximum of just under $365,000 in grant funds available.

As part of the city’s work on Phase 2, the council in its consent calendar vote approved a temporary equipment operator position. The position will be full-time for six months or less, with the operator also used to work on the Federal Wastewater Treatment Plan Tree Farm Demonstration Project.

Property studies A second item receiving council discussion and then approval was spending a maximum of $36,020 from the Municipal Waste Water Treatment Plant Fund for surveys and studies to identify long-lasting effects of effluent discharge, burn areas and environmental concerns on the property used for the treatment plant.

“It’s a chance to review staff reports,” City Manager Bob Gorson said of the proposal.

Mayor Randy Miller added, “We need to know what is with that property.”

The surveys and studies will provide data that could be retained for future uses of the parcel, said Craig Jones, city public works manager.

This is what was walking around on my front sidewalk Halloween night. Truth be told, my son and his wife decided to build a costume they had seen online. They decided to build this great creepy beast; and forgo their traditional Halloween party.

Cost is $20 for adults and $10 for children. * Councilmember Paul Linder pointed out that businesses can still contact the Kiwanis Club to have flag holders installed in front of their businesses in time to display a flag on Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11. * Councilmember Dave Noerr and Mayor Miller both discussed public mis-use of the Oilworkers Monument. “It’s a work of art that’s meant to admire, not something to climb on,” Miller said. * The Sixth Street project, from Ash to Warren streets, is out to bid with construction possibly starting in mid-December, Jones said. Work on 10th Street couldn’t be combined with the Sixth Street project and will come in early 2012, he said.

It was a quiet Monday morning in the small town of Taft. The four Piggies, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello, had just woken up and decided to take a trip to their favorite place, the Taft College Library.

When the Piggies got to the library, they quickly waddled to the children’s area. They were excited to sit down and read their favorite book together, The Three Little Pigs. Yet, when they got into the children’s area they realized that all the books were out of order. Someone had gone in there and put the books in the wrong spot. “Oh no!” Michelangelo squealed. “How are we ever going to find our favorite book before the library closes?”

The Piggies searched for what seemed like hours on end. They searched the children’s area, the regular stacks, even the law books.

The last place was the reserve books. The wonderful library girls allowed the Piggies to look through the books. They slowly read through all the books, looking at each one. “Look at this,” Raphael said, “Come look at this old book.” Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Donatello scurried over to him. Just as the Piggies were all around, Raphael pulled the book out and dust flew everywhere. But this was no ordinary dust. This dust was an old chemical that libraries used to put on books to preserve them. They stopped using the chemical because of its mutating qualities.

The Piggies coughed and coughed. They all breathed in the harmful chemical. Since Raphael pulled out the book, his whole body was covered in the chemical dust. Slowly, one by one, each Piggie passed out, not knowing what was going to happen when they woke.

When the Piggies woke up, they realized that they were all green and had weird turtle shells on their backs. Michelangelo, Leonardo and Donatello were all normal size, but Raphael had grown triple the size of his other friends. All the Piggies realized that they each had a special power as well. Michelangelo could smell food from 50 miles away, Donatello could yell so loud it broke glass, Leonardo could move as fast as lightning, and Raphael had all the powers of the other Piggies and he had super strength. The Library girls told the Piggies about the chemical dust and its mutating qualities. The Piggies knew exactly what to do.

Each Piggie realized that this was caused by students misbehaving in the Library. Each Piggie put a different colored mask on and swore on that day that they would stop all wrong doers in the Taft College Library. No longer would someone not find a book, no longer would people eat in the library, and no longer would misbehaving be allowed. The Piggies swore they would stay in the Library and protect others from what happened to them. And so the heroes Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello became the Teenage Mutant Ninja Piggies!

In “Publisher’s Clearinghouse” style, a surprise announcement was made recently at the home of Vic Killingsworth and wife Peggy. Chamber Director Kathy Orrin announced to an incredulous Killingsworth, that he had been chosen as the 2011 Grand Marshall of the Taft Christmas Parade. Killingsworth, a Navy veteran of World War II, was chosen not only for his contributions to our country, but also for his contribution to our community through the Taft Oilworker Monument. His daughter Barbara, a member of the original Monument committee, was on hand for the surprise.

The Christmas Parade will have another Grand Marshall this year. Director Orrin stated, “We also will pay tribute to another important member of our community whom we lost this year, Don Gillaspie. His memory will be honored through his naming as Honorary Grand Marshall of the Parade.”

The Taft Chamber is not hosting the Parade by themselves. “We are indebted to the Taft Lions, Midway Sunset Lions, Kiwanis, Rotary, and Soroptimists, along with the Historic Fort who have come together to share the tasks of preparing for the Parade,” stated Orrin.

This year’s Christmas Parade will travel down Center Street on Monday evening, December 5, starting at 7:00PM. A street lighting ceremony begins before the parade at 6:45PM. The chosen theme is Christmas in Red, White, and Blue, and the Chamber plans to give recognition to all veterans who pass by the Judges’ stand.

All are invited to participate in the Parade. Entry forms are available at the Chamber, 400 Kern Street, in Taft, and from this newspaper. There is no fee to enter the parade, but proper paperwork must be completed and turned in to the Chamber by Tuesday, November 22.

TUHS Marching Band Takes First Place At Competition The Taft Union High School marching band took first in its division at a competition at Ridgeview High School Saturday, Oct. 29, according to drum major Christie Rogers. The band played its Blues Brothers Show Featuring soloist Ashley Ramos on Trumpet.

The 53-member Wildcat band won Division 1A over Shafter and Mira Monte.

Taft also placed second in the percussion competition and third in the color guard category.

Eleven high schools participated in the event overall.

The band’s next performance will be the Christmas concert in the TUHS auditorium at 7 p.m. on Friday, December 9, according to band director Amanda Posey.

Joe Geiger Sr., Chito, Joe Geiger Jr. are still calling on us because they are always going to need repairs, home maintenance or plumbing which needs to be taken care of, so we stay busy despite the economy.”

Geiger’s primary clients are homeowners and business owners.

He says that people realize they need to protect their largest investments, so when something needs to be fixed or repaired, they call.

“People want to protect their biggest investments, so when they need our help, they usually call before a needed repair or plumbing job gets worse,” Geiger said.

Geiger has been in the construction and plumbing business for 15 years on the Westside, and he says he loves the business.

Geiger first began his career in construction as a licensed contractor in the early 90’s after he obtained his 1st state contractors license in landscaping. His family was already in the construction business, so obtaining his landscaping license gave the family business another service they could offer the community.

Geiger, intent on growing the family business, and encouraged by his parents, decided to obtain his general contractor license. Joe felt that obtaining this license would grow the family business.

Soon after, Geiger’s father and mother encouraged him to obtain a 2nd license in general construction so that he could build his own identity in construction.

Joe’s wife Laura is a well know local real estate agent. Together they combine their skills to provide complete real estate and construction services to the community.

“Our work and careers compliment each other,” said Geiger. “My wife works on the commercial and residential side of real estate, and I work on the construction and maintenance side.”

“Joe and I are the perfect match,” said Laura Geiger. “He does the construction and I do the sales and rentals. We are an excellent team.”

Laura has been in real estate for more than 10 years. Her company, Laura Geiger Prudential Tobias Realty, is based in Kern County.

Both Joe and Laura were born and raised in Taft and graduated from Taft Union High School.

I remember Mr. Brown at Taft High,” said Joe. “ He was my teacher in 10th and 11th grade in business education. He inspired me and made a real difference in my life.”

Joe and Laura also share a unique hobby together.

“We love to skydive,” said Joe. “We made our first jump together, and today we have about 150 jumps each.”

Family is also important to Joe, and the family business is a very important part of his life today.

“I am proud to carry on the family name,” Geiger said. “We are well know in the community for our service and the quality of our work. Much of the work we get is by word of mouth and has gotten us a lot of business.”

TUHS Fall Renaissance Rally Honors Student & Staff Member

Billy Williams receives award from emcee Greg “Dracula” Goossen Taft Union High School senior Billy Williams was honored as most improved student and mechanic/sports announcer/photographer Gary Rennie was feted as the classified staff member of the year at the fall Renaissance rally on Halloween Monday<Oct. 31> in Mullen gym. The rally celebrates academics.

Williams declined to speak in front of the packed house when he received the award. Later, he said he was, “embarrassed, surprised and happy. I don’t do really good in front of crowds.” As for his motivation to improve his grades and attendance, “I just wanted to improve my grades from last year in case I go to college. I won’t be so far behind.” He also plans to get more involved in his final year and play baseball, besides doing his hobbies of disc golf and

rollerblading.

English teacher Alan Popejoy said, “Billy is a resilient, young man with a great attitude.

I am proud to see him take steps towards reaching his full potential.”

Rennie was described by emcee Greg Goossen, resplendent as Dracula, as “bleeding blue and gold. He gives his all to Taft High.” Rennie, 53, a 1976 TUHS graduate Gary Rennie and a lifelong bachelor, also was congratulated by his mother, Jan Nelson.

A modest man, Rennie said later that he was “shocked and surprised. It’s a very big honor when the kids vote. I just try to make their high school experience enjoyable and support them in every way I can. When I drive a bus to a game I might as well shoot pictures.” He gives the digital images to the school for use in the yearbook, web pages and marquee. He also announces football, softball, basketball and some volleyball games. He’s worked at Taft High for six years and was an auto mechanic before that.

“It’s amazing to watch students come in as freshmen and how much they mature by the time they graduate. It’s nice to be able to see them realize their dreams. It sounds kind of corny but it’s nice.

Getting involved makes coming to work nice.”

“Nice” is a word many of his coworkers use to describe Rennie.

“Gary Rennie is an ‘unsung hero’ at Taft High,” praised last year’s winner athletic director Lindsay O’Neill Brown. “I don’t think many people know just how much he does for our school. I am so glad that the students recognized him for all his hard work and I know this honor means a lot to him coming from the kids.”

Sarah Criss, the principal’s secretary, added, “Before starting work at TUHS, I worked with Gary Rennie from time to time in our previous jobs. Ironically, it was always tied to TUHS events he had volunteered to help with or other community events, usually for children. Gary believes that all of our kids have a future ahead of them with all types of possibilities. He’s a huge supporter of youth activities. Him, being an employee here at Taft High, seems like a natural fit.” English teacher Caroline Schoneweis added, “He’s been really generous about giving me copies of pictures that had my kids in them. They would just show up in my mailbox. He didn’t have to go to that trouble, but he’s done that for years. He’s not just a Taft High employee; he really cares about the kids and how they’re doing and other staff members.”

John Hatton, the local representative of Jostens, which promotes the Renaissance program, said Williams will receive a 10-karat gold class ring and the Taft High Renaissance Club is adding a $250 Visa card. Jostens is giving Rennie a watch and Renaissance added a $100 gift certificate to Café Med. The well-executed rally brought smiles to a lot of faces. The Halloween theme was “Goosebumps” and the gym was festooned with orange and black balloons and plenty of candy. Honored were: Top Cats, students with a GPA of 4.0 or above in the spring 2011 semester; the Point 5ers (students who raised their GPA by at least 0.5); the 39ers (students who didn’t miss a day of school in the first quarter); and, last semester’s honor roll students.

Students nominated by staff for good attitudes and staff nominated by students wore T-shirts they received for their positive attitudes, explained Goossen, Renaissance team coordinator.

The Crypt Kickers, a band composed of staff members, played the “Monster Mash” song for a dance contest. The rally included a monster makeup game and a gruesome relay, which ended in Frankenstein coming to life.

Mitt Romney’s Wall Street Advisors Raises Serious Questions

By Dr. Harold Pease In October, Presidential contender Mitt Romney released the 20 names of those he had selected to advise him in foreign policy and national security matters, more than half of whom, eleven to be exact, are members of the elite, semi-secret Council on Foreign Relations. It isn’t that most of these persons are not qualified to advise, nor is it that very few of the twenty can be said to be conservative, even in a stretch, but it is the fact that for decades the CFR has been the special interest group, Think Tank if you prefer, that provides a majority of the “experts” in every administration, Democrat or Republican.

No special interest group has had more impact than the CFR over foreign policy in the 20th Century, leading many to question if we have but one political party in the United States with two arms. Indeed, many see no significant difference in foreign policy between George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Nor was there between George Bush and Bill Clinton.

CFR candidate Barack Obama, probably the most anti-war candidate in a couple of decades, and so condemnatory of his predecessor in this area, as president not only continued the Bush wars but added Libya and central Africa to the list while sponsoring drone killings in Pakistan, Syria, and Somali. History will view him as having been as pro-war as his predecessor.

Obama’s Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, probably admitted more than she was supposed to in her address at the recent dedication of a branch CFR in Washington D. C. when she said that her source of direction was the CFR subcenter down the street. “I am delighted to be at these new headquarters. I have been often to the mother ship in New York City but it is good to have an outpost of the Council right here down the street from the State Department. We get a lot of advice from the Council so this will mean that I won’t have as far to go to be told what we should be doing and how we should think about the future.” See audio capture of these remarks on post of this article on LibertyUnderFire.org.

Notable political scientist Lester Milbraith observed in his work Domestic Sources of Foreign Policy, page 247, that “the influence of the CFR throughout government is so pervasive that it is difficult to distinguish the CFR from government programs.” Prominent political scientist Thomas R. Dye in his textbook Who’s Running America? The Bush Restoration, page 188, wrote “The history of CFR policy accomplishments is dazzling” then traced in detail their dominating role in foreign policy accomplishment from the 1920’s through the George Bush Administration from their own boasts of success in Council on Foreign Relations Annual Reports.

I have told my students for over 25 years that the next UN Ambassador, Secretary of State, Ambassadors to both Russia and China will be from this organization, as will a third of his/her cabinet. Not might be!! Will be!! Also no one gets to be president without their approval. No exception!! We get to choose which one of their approved party finalists we want, but the first election is theirs. I make the same prediction today for who ever becomes the republican presidential candidate. Such has been the case since the Council on Foreign Relations was founded by its Wall Street creators J.P. Morgan and et. in 1921. It is the special interest group of Wall Street, supported by grants from the Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Ford foundations. Its journal, Foreign Affairs, is “considered throughout the world to be the unofficial mouthpiece of U.S. foreign policy. Few important initiatives in U.S. policy have not been first outlined in articles in this publication.”

But what is the Romney CFR connection? The current CFR membership roster does not list him as a member. In 2007, he also denied such. That said, the CFR website does have a very comprehensive and favorable outline of his policies on 22 foreign policy areas seemingly to invite support for him. They cite him as having published in their July/August 2007 magazine Foreign Affairs. Long-time readers know that no one gets published unless seen favorably by them. His selection of their organization as the source for a majority of his foreign policy and national security advisors suggests that a Romney Presidency will be managed by the CFR as with his predecessors. In fact, I can almost see the face and voice of George W. Bush as I read through Romney’s 22 foreign policy areas—a comparison that Bush would not find objectionable. No wonder the Tea Party movement, which opposes elitist semi-secret government and Bush, because such too surrounded him, is unenthused.

These Lights Shine In Honor Of Those We Love

A time to honor and remember loved ones and friends who have been a special part of our lives.

Valley Air Quality Deteriorates Conditions prompt health caution, wood-burning prohibitions

Deteriorating air quality throughout the air basin has prompted local air officials to issue a health cautionary statement and wood-burning prohibitions in various counties.

The health caution because of gusty winds is in effect through this evening in San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, western Fresno and Kings counties.

Winds may produce areas of localized blowing dust, which can result in unhealthy concentrations of particulate matter 10 microns and smaller, or PM10.

“Take precautions to protect your health if you are in an area of blowing dust,” said Samir Sheikh, director of the Air District’s Strategies and Incentives Department.

Exposure to particle pollution can cause serious health problems, aggravate lung disease, trigger asthma attacks and acute bronchitis, and increase risk of respiratory infections.

Residents in these areas are advised to use caution through this evening.

People with heart or lung diseases should follow their doctors’ advice for dealing with episodes of unhealthy air quality. Additionally, older adults and children should avoid prolonged exposure, strenuous activities or heavy exertion.

Everyone else should reduce prolonged exposure, strenuous activities or heavy exertion.

Additionally, wood-burning curtailments have been issued for Tulare and the Valley portion of Kern counties for Wed., Nov. 2. The daylong, mandatory curtailment begins at midnight tonight (Nov. 1) and continues through midnight Wednesday. The prohibitions are the first for Tulare County and the second for Kern County in the new Check Before You Burn season that began Nov. 1.

There are two levels of wood-burning forecast: “Wood Burning Prohibited” or “Please Burn Cleanly.” When a prohibition is declared, burning any solid fuel in a residential fireplace or wood-burning device is not permitted. Residences without access to natural gas service or where wood-burning is the sole source of heat are exempt from these prohibitions.

Prohibition violations are subject to fines.
