This Saturday the Rotary Club is holding a biscuits and gravy breakfast at the TUHS cafeteria from 7am – 11am. Tickets are $5 each and this money goes towards the various local sports and youth groups.

Grandma’s Attic At Taft Branch Library Every Saturday Through April 14th Grandma’s Attic Storytime has resumed at the Taft Branch Library on Saturdays and will continue every Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. through April 14. Aimed at 5 to 8 year-olds, Grandma’s Attic offers an old trunk full of surprises and stories presented by a different volunteer reader each week. Children who participate will receive a form to return to their teacher for credit in their school reading program. Camera Club Kicks Off New Year Saturday, February 8th One of the oldest and longest running camera clubs in the United States kicks off 2012 with a photo shoot on Saturday, February 4, at West Kern Oil Museum. Past, present and prospective members of Taft Camera Club are invited to gather at the museum at 9:30 a.m. with camera gear in hand. No special expertise is required.

Taft Chamber Installation Dinner Wednesday, February 8th The Taft District Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau is having their Annual Installation Dinner on Wednesday, February 8th at the Historic Fort. Maricopa Chamber of Commerce Pancake & Waffle Breakfast Saturday Come out this Saturday, February 4th and bring your Valentine sweetheart for a delightful treat at the Maricopa Chamber of Commerce pancake and waffle breakfast. Big 6 GP Round 1 At Honolulu Hills Round 1 of the District 37 AMA Big6 Grand Prix Series hosted by the Dirt Diggers MC will be held this weekend at the Honolulu Raceway Park in Taft, CA. As always, you can count on the Diggers and their tremendous efforts in making their event one of the best in the series. The Honolulu Hills Raceway is a great facility with a professionally groomed motocross track, ungulating hills, paved sections and of course great spectating and camping. Gate Fees are $10 per person per day or $15 per person for a weekend pass. Kids 5 and under free.

Gates open 12pm to 10pm, overnight camping is ok, camp fires in containers only, no pit riding/bike.

Westside Watcher Remember Trinity, Stop Child Abuse The statistics are alarming: Each day in the U.S., five children die of abuse or neglect, and 3.3 million reports of abuse are made each year, according to Childhelp, a nonprofit organization dedicated to child victims of abuse and neglect.

Each case is unique, as revealed in recent local news reports about the death of Trinity Monique Hanna at the hands of a child abuser.

Signs of child abuse can include: unexplained burns, cuts, bruises or welts; bite marks; anti-social behavior; problems in school; or fear of adults. Also, according to Childhelp, abused children may experience nightmares and bed wetting; drastic changes in appetite; overcompliance or excessive aggression; or fear of a particular person or family member.

Signs of neglect include: unsuitable clothing for weather conditions; a child who is dirty or unbathed; a child who demonstrates extreme hunger; or a child with an apparent lack of adult supervision.

Because the incidence of abuse and neglect is estimated to be three times the number reported, part of being a better citizen is to learn the signs and symptoms of abuse.

Now is the time all of us must protect our children. It should be our community’s No. 1 priority.

Here’s what you can do to help stop child abuse: • •

Donate time, food and used clothing to families in need. This may decrease the financial stress that parents sometimes take out on kids.

Turn off violent TV shows, movies, video games — exposure to violence (especially early in life) reinforces violent behaviors and desensitizes us to the suffering of others.

Take a deep breath; think about what you’re doing. Put yourself in time-out before striking out at a child.

Protect your child. Get out of a violent relationship, stay away from people involved with drugs or crime, don’t let casual acquaintances babysit. A caring, nurturing environment creates caring, loving kids.

Report suspicions of abuse or neglect to police. Timely intervention can make the difference between a child’s life and death.

Taft College Receives Favorable Review By the Accrediting Commission For Community And Junior Colleges Taft College Is Restored To Full Accreditation The West Kern Community College District is pleased to announce Taft College has been removed from Warning and Restored to Full Accreditation status by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC), which accredits associate degree granting institutions in the Western region of the United States. The ACCJC is one of seven regional accrediting commissions authorized to operate by the U.S. Department of Education through the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 In 2009, the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges issued Taft College a warning concerning the college’s ability to meet accreditation standards after a ten-member team visited the campus. As part of this overall review, Taft College also received positive commendations in several areas.

The warning, however, meant the commission had concerns regarding the college’s strategic planning and program review procedures. In addition, the commission also requested that Taft College develop ethics policies and build on efforts to boost student proficiency levels. Barbara Beno, president of the commission, said the warning, though “mild,” is a sign for colleges to “stop and reverse” certain practices. Taft College has strongly responded to the recommendations resulting in restoration to full accreditation.

Taft Residents At Loss Over Local Child’s Death

Ever since the news came last week that 3-year-old Trinity Monique Hanna had been alledgedly killed by her mother’s live-in boyfriend, Eric Foster, Taft residents have been at a loss to express their sadness and incomprehension. By Monday morning blue ribbons had been tied to trees on Center Street, along with signs saying “STOP CHILD ABUSE,” and a candlelight vigil in the child’s memory was planned for Monday evening outside GS Graphics, 306 Center Street.

Several hundred people, mostly parents and their children, attended the vigil Monday night this week to honor the child’s memory. Blue ribbons with Trinity’s name were sold. Jennifer Howard said the money being raised was “for Trinity” and would either be donated to the funeral home in Los Angeles where her body was taken, or to Alpha House. T-shirts with the STOP CHILD ABUSE slogan were also for sale; people

The crowd was unusually quiet for a group this size as people seemed to lack the words to express the sadness and heaviness of heart they felt. They were searching for answers. “It’s a heartbreak,” said Bethany Lytle. “People just aren’t aware of how much of this that goes on.”

Angela Hayden from Hayden’s Hope, a new thrift store on Center Street, said, “This precious baby was taken too soon.”

Her husband Mike said, “It makes me sick.” He vows to put more effort into stopping child abuse. The Haydens have four children. “Everything they do they do for these kids,” said a bystander.

The balloons were released into the night sky, the candles were lit, and a prayer was offered by Ashley Hopkins—that the community be made more aware of the existence of child abuse.

help. An unidentified woman said, “We have to tell children that if someone is mean to them to tell somebody. Please tell someone.”

Five or six women from Alpha House attended the vigil.

They seemed to have the best answers for what to do when abuse occurs. They all agreed that this didn’t need to happen.

Alpha House is a not-for-profit shelter for battered women.

It has been in existence in Taft for ten years. Five or six women manage the house. It offers shelter, food, access to medical attention, and counseling to any women in need and to her children. When a woman is ready to leave the house, after care is given to help her get resituated in a new house or apartment.

There is always someone there 24/7, so a person in need can come any time of the day or night. If transportation is lacking, the person can call 911 and the police will bring her to the house. To call Alpha House, dial 763-4357. Its mailing address is P.O. Box 712, Taft, CA 93268.

Manager Sondra Ryan says that on a given day Alpha House may have from two to nine ladies and their children staying there. In a given month 15 to 20 women may have stayed with them.

Karen DeWitt, Chairman of Alpha House Board, says, “People in trouble think there’s no way out, but there is. Alpha House is just the beginning, the first step.”

Mayor Randy Miller and his wife stood among the mourners.

“It’s sad that this happened,” he said, “and it’s nice that so many people came out. This is an important issue.”

Ashley Hopkins, Sarah Davis, Kim Garrett, Mary Messenger and Micah Helms put up STOP CHILD ABUSE posters and blue ribbons along Center Street this week in memory of 3-year-old Trinity Monique Hanna who died as the result of child abuse. The group organized a candlelight vigil on Monday night where a crowd of several hundred people gathered at G.S. Graphix on Center Street to draw attention to child abuse and remember Trinity. Bows were sold to raise funds for the project by Jacind Martin, as well as cookies by Andrea Kaiser and ribbons by Jennifer Howard.

Taft Oil Technology Academy Helps Prepare Youth For Careers In Oil Industry

Taft ARC Raffling Off Weekend Getaway

By Jane McCabe There are more beneficial activities that go on in our fair town then meet the eye. Take Taft Union High School’s TAFT OIL TECHNOLOGY ACADEMY, a vigorous program that helps prepare selected students for careers in the oil industry.

Ted Pendergrass, coordinator of the program, described it to Chamber of Commerce members at their February 1st meeting.

The program derives matching funds from the state of California and from various oil companies.

Freshmen may apply. Fifty percent of those selected are “at-risk” students. All are required to take college prep English, and an abundance of science and math classes.

This no-nonsense program seeks to give students a thorough introduction to the oil industry—they will study geology, oil exploration, and mineral rights; conduct mock contract negotiations; and go on field trips to the fields. In their junior year they study production and transportation, and in their senior year, refining and environmental issues.

A debate is held during their junior year. Last year is was concerning the Gulf Oil Spill, and this year’s topic will be hydraulic fracturing. Thirteen week summer internships are given in which students will spend eight hours a day—from 6:30 to 2:30 daily—in the fields.

Students are also coached in developing the skills to help gain them employment—the preparation of cover letters and resumes, and “dress for success” interview techniques.

The program is not an end unto to itself. Students are encouraged to go to college before entering a profession in the oil industry. Most students who complete this program are assured of good jobs when they graduate from college.

After 18 Years, San Joaquin Automotive Will Soon Be Messenger Automotive

The Tea Party Debt Commission Found $9.7 Trillion to Cut

By Dr. Harold W. Pease The French philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville in 1840, once prophetically said, “The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the publics’ money.” That day is here!

Both parties have succumbed to the temptation of getting elected by promising ever more goodies from the public coffers, irrespective of constitutional limits, and to the point that they have irresponsibly enslaved our children with 15.25 trillion dollars indebtedness. Both parties are blatantly guilty with democrats far more so the last three years. The national debt has increased at an average of 4 billion dollars a day under President Barack Obama. The seriousness of this led Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to exclaim, “Our national debt is our biggest national security threat.”

Last summer both big government parties, Democrat and Republican, unable to come to any agreement, turned their authority over to what was called a “Super Committee” of six democrats and six republicans and still could not reduce the debt by 1.2 trillion dollars over ten years. Impasse!!

Everything is talked about in the presidential debates except this national security threat. We will just pretend it away.

Why? Because both parties know that the cuts that have to be made to save the terminal cancer patient have to be drastic, career politicians, which they are, do not want the media to blame their party—which it will! So, the ship (the United States) will sink for lack of real leadership, each party blaming the other.

Not so fast! The Tea Party Patriot movement comes to the rescue again. They predicted correctly that neither party really represents limited constitutional government and both are addicted to debt. It is like an addict prescribing his own detox program. Consequently Freedom Works, a Tea Party affiliate, selected 12 of their own members and through the Internet invited 150,000 members to make suggestions on what should be done.

The Tea Party Plan cuts, caps, and balances federal spending. The budget is balanced in four years, without tax hikes, and remains balanced. Federal spending is reduced by $9.7 trillion over the next ten years. The plan shrinks the federal government from 24 % of GDP to about 16 %. Finally it stops the growth of the debt and begins paying it down. Within a generation there would be no national debt. Bold indeed!

These goals are accomplished, their report continues, by repealing ObamaCare, eliminating four unconstitutional, costly, inefficient Cabinet agencies—Energy, Education, Commerce, and HUD—and reducing or privatizing many others, including EPA, TSA, Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac. The report calls for ending farm subsidies, government student loans, and foreign aid to countries that don’t support us—luxuries we can no longer afford. Social Security is saved and improved by shifting ownership and control from government to individuals, through new SMART Accounts, a program successfully tried in Chile. It gives Medicare seniors the right to opt into the special Congressional health care plan. Moreover, it suspends pension contributions and COLAs for Members of Congress, whenever the budget is in deficit.

The new plan offers a rational transition to ownership of our own retirement and more control and choice over our health care. Why did the government fail to accomplish the same thing—even behind closed doors? Remember, Congress, as Alexis de Tocqueville predicted, has learned that it can bribe the public with the publics’ own money. Their first concern is to protect their jobs and party. Outsiders, without a personal stake in the outcome, can see much more and do much more without the inevitable political wrangling. Will your establishment press share this plan with you? Probably not.

I will follow in another column with Tea Party specifics on dealing with unfunded liabilities in Medicare and Social Security which the two big government parties will never talk about.

Fire Extinguisher Scam Fraudulent fire extinguisher technicians and inspectors are enticing businesses into signing documents that are used to bill the owners. These companies are claiming that they have serviced portable fire extinguishers, fire alarm systems and automatic fire protection systems correctly when in many cases they have not. They are also posing as fire department inspectors, intimidating businesses and using hostile tactics to have quarterly and annual services rendered. In all actuality, the fire department has no affiliation with these companies. Many companies are swapping fire extinguishers, which is illegal, and swapping tags while charging for services not rendered.

The fire department has the enforcement authority to regulate Fire Code requirements, which fire protection/detection systems should be in a facility and these service companies have no authority at all. You as a business owner have the right to turn them away and seek other avenues or legitimate service companies.

The Kern County Fire Department would like to give business owners the ability to verify the license and status of a business technician.

1. Contact your local Better Business Bureau at www.bbb.org or (661)322-2074 to verify the reviews of a particular business.

2. Contact your local California State License Board at www.cslb.ca.gov or 1(800)-321-CSLB(2752) and verify a license, work comp, and bonds.

3. Go to the California State Fire Marshal website at www.osfm.ca.gov or call (916)-445-8376. Click on license and training and then click on Certificate of Registration or Fire Extinguisher Companies and owners may verify all fire extinguisher companies and technicians.

4. Try not to pay in cash, use other forms of payment. It is an easier way to track and always get receipts.

California Weekly Gas Price Update and Outlook

Average retail gasoline prices in California have risen 3.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.73/g Monday, January 30th. This compares with the national average that has increased 4.5 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.39/g, according to gasoline price website CaliforniaGasPrices. com.

Including the change in gas prices in California during the past week, prices Monday, January 30th were 39.7 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 13.6 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 13.5 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 30.4 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

“Late last week we saw wholesale gasoline prices rise dramatically on some refinery issues, which leads me to believe that retail gasoline prices will rise in response,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “We continue to also watch how Iran responds to EU sanctionsthere are some concerns that they may cut oil to the European region before the sanctions are to take effect to cause these countries hardship when they can’t find new sources of oil quickly enough. That in itself could draw crude oil prices higher quickly at a moments notice,” DeHaan said.

BLM Seeks Nominations to Central California Resource Advisory Council The Bureau of Land Management in is seeking public nominations for three open positions on its Central California District Resource Advisory Council, which advises the BLM on public land issues. The BLM will consider the nominations until March 12.

The Central California RAC advises BLM officials for the Hollister, Mother Lode, Bakersfield and Bishop field offices.

The three RAC positions open in the Central California District are in the following categories: Category Two (one position) – Representatives of nationally or regionally recognized environmental organizations, archaeological and historical organizations, dispersed recreation activities, and wild horse and burro organizations.

Category Three (two positions) – Representatives of state, county, or local elected office; representatives and employees of a state agency responsible for the management of natural resources; representatives of Indian Tribes within or adjacent to the area for which the RAC is organized; representatives and employees of academic institutions who are involved in natural sciences; and the public-at-large.

Individuals may nominate themselves or others to serve on an advisory council. Nominees should also demonstrate a commitment to consensus building and collaborative decisionmaking. All nominations must be accompanied by letters of reference from any represented interests or organizations; a completed background information nomination form; and any other information that speaks to the nominee’s qualifications.
