Spring Forward: Daylight Saving Time 2012 Begins Sunday Sunday we get to spring ahead by setting clocks forward an hour for daylight saving time. At 2 a.m. on the morning of Sunday, March 11, we’ll be springing forward—and losing an hour of the day, for daylight saving time. The good news: sunset will be an hour later.

You may have noticed the annual tradition of daylight saving time has crept forward a bit. We used to spring forward on the first Sunday in April and fall back on last Sunday in October. But a couple years ago, Congress changed the date—adding more daylight saving time to the calendar. This year, it will run from March 11 until Nov. 4.

Weekly Gas Price Update And Outlook Average retail gasoline prices in California have risen 3.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $4.33/g Monday, March 5th. This compares with the national average that has increased 5.2 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.71/g, according to gasoline price website CaliforniaGasPrices.com.

Including the change in gas prices in California during the past week, prices Monday, March 5th were 45.8 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 57.8 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 27.8 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 24.1 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

“Gasoline prices have spiked considerably higher in virtually every area over the last two weeks, and while I don’t expect the pace of the recent rise in prices to continue for the entire month, a similar jump may again occur closer to April Fools Day, and it won’t be a funny joke, it’ll be disgusting reality,” said GasBuddy. com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “The rise in price is so unbelievable that we may have to revise upward our previous gasoline forecast that had called for a national average of between $3.75 to $4.15 by mid-May, as the national average already stands at nearly $3.72/gallon,” DeHaan said.

California High School Exit Exam Boot Camp Taft Union High School is offering a one-day “boot camp” to prepare sophomores for the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE), which they must pass to earn their high school diploma.

The voluntary class will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 10, and is a preparation course for sophomores about to take the CAHSEE for the first time. Teachers will give instruction in English and math. A free lunch is provided. Parents can call the principal’s office, 763-2336, to inquire if their student has signed up or to sign up their student. Students who sign up will be assigned for both math AND English, not one or the other.

This is the third year the course has been offered and more than 100 students participate.

Lead English teacher Jackie Peavyhouse said, “Students had the opportunity to review skills and concepts they would need to know for the test. They felt better prepared and knew what to expect.”

Math teacher Tom LeClair added, “Investing time prior to the test is a much better investment in time management than taking a remedial class next year!”

Laura Arredondo Addresses Taft Chamber of Commerce

By Jane McCabe According to the 2010 US Census, 49.2% of the total population of Kern County is Hispanic. Of those people Spanish is the first language used by 85%, and 62% are most comfortable speaking Spanish. Seventy per cent use mostly Spanish at home.

With statistics like these any business that does not target the Hispanic Community is losing 50% of its potential buyers.

According to Laura Arredondo, director of Hispanic Media Group, a marketing consulting business, marketing is the most important part of a business. With a Hispanic population of 380,289 the Hispanic Market is no longer just a small portion of the business market. It has significant buying power.

Laura’s agency tailors comprehensive marketing plans in English and Spanish for television, radio, the Internet, and print media.

Since she recommends using Spanish in advertising for the Hispanic population, she has a team of professionals who can translate materials into Spanish.

Laura used to work for Taft Chevrolet when it was Taft Family Automobile and so understands the power of effective advertising.

When it was sold, she formed her own company in Bakersfield. She believes that advertising legitimatize a business. Word of mouth isn’t as effective as it used to be. She thinks Taft could use a Spanish newspaper to reach the Hispanic population.

Taft City Council Report

Taft City Councilmembers saluted an old and a new tradition at their meeting Tuesday.

The council, on behalf of the city, presented a proclamation to Taft Petroleum Club saluting the organization on its 100th birthday.

The club, which was originally know as The Petroleum Club and is open to all who work in the industry, was the first of its kind in the world, Mayor Randy Miller said in reading the proclamation.

It was about 40 years later before a Petroleum Club was added in Bakersfield and it was that request to use the name Petroleum Club that resulted in the Taft organization changing its name to Taft Petroleum Club, Miller said.

On the new end, the council gave approval for street closures and the use of city-owned property for the second annual “Taft Bike Fest,” sponsored by 2 Wheel Productions LLC, of Taft.

The festival will again be held over Labor Day Weekend, beginning on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 30, and running through Monday morning, Sept. 3.

Street closures will be: Main Street from 6th Street 250 feet east to the municipal parking lot; 4th and 6th streets between Main and Supply Row; and Supply between 4th and 10th streets.

City-owned property to be used during the festival will be: Rails to Trails between 2nd and 10th streets; available city-owned lots between 2nd and 10th; 5th Street Plaza; and the municipal parking lot next to 5th Street Plaza.

There will be camping and vendor locations along Rails to Trails, operated by the Taft Chamber of Commerce, according to the information supplied to the council by Craig Jones, interim city manager and the city’s public works manager.

The festival will include live entertainment, a display of many different types of motorcycles and a pro/intermediate flat track race, Jones said.

The 2011 Bike Fest brought in an estimated 5,000 visitors to Taft, said Gene Jones, president of 2 Wheel Productions.

“The board ... (has) received nothing but positive feedback from participants, with the exception of the heat ... and we heard some restaurant establishments ran out of certain food items,” Gene Jones wrote in a letter to the council.

“Since last year’s event we have held weekly meetings to plan and organize this year’s event. ... Our main goal this year is to increase the amount of vendors, entertainment and visitors.”

Proceeds from the festival will be donated to Alpha House in memory of Trinity Hanna, 3, of Taft, who died in January from alleged child abuse, Gene Jones said.

Street paving The council approved appropriating $21,188 from capital reserves as half-payment for the resurfacing of Emmons Park Drive from 6th Street to Taft College. The college has agreed to pay the other 50 percent of the costs – not to exceed $21,188 – to assist with the resurfacing, Craig Jones told the council.

The city received a letter from them college concerning the poor condition of the street, Jones said.

“The letter describes the poor condition of the roadway and how it would be cost effective for the city to consider paving ...

Emmons Park Drive during the resurfacing project that is slated to take place on 6th Street during Easter break,” the interim city manager told the council.

Employee Handbook Lonn Boyer, city director of human resources, presented councilmembers with copies of the new City of Taft Employee Handbook.

The handbook is “a ready reference and summary of the city’s Human Resources (Department) policies, procedures and benefits,” the introduction to the document states.

The handbook “is designed to provide a quick overview for ... employees.”

Approved Other items approved by the council in a consent calendar vote included: * The second reading of an ordinance approving a zone change for uninhabited areas along Cedar and Wood streets that the city is seeking to annex; * A city attorney services agreement; * Appointment of Jones as interim city manager; * A holiday policy for part-time employees; * Continuation of the funding of three extra-help maintenance aide positions for up to six months.

Los Primos Carniceria Now Open In Sunset Plaza

Local businessman and co-owner of La Villa Market Manuel Zuniga has recently opened his new carniceria meat market Los Primos in Sunset Plaza on Finley Drive.

Zuniga, who came to the United States in 1986, has realized his dream of owning his own market by opening Los Primos last month.

“I came to the United States for the opportunity and to raise my family,” said Zuniga.

When he arrived, Zuniga worked in New Mexico in the cement industry, as a strawberry worker in Santa Maria, and as a houseman at a hotel in Utah. He left the hotel business and later became a butcher.

Zuniga came to Taft several years ago when the opportunity came to work as a butcher at La Villa Market on Centert Street, where he is now a partner in the business. Later, he open a meat market inside Nancy’s Bakery next door to Los Primos where he opened his market last month.

Zunigia has plans to open a larger full service market in Taft someday in the future.

“Business is very good, and I get all types of customers who come to buy fresh meat and other products,” Zuniga said. “My prices are low and my service is excellent.”

Zuniga lives in Taft with his wife Maria of 16 years, and his four children Irene, Maria, Leo and Nahaima.

“Taft is a good place for my family,” Zuniga said.

Los Primos is located in the Sunset Plaza across from Goodyear Tire on Finley Drive. It’s open 7 days a week.

“We follow the trends,” said Portenga. “For instance, we’re getting bermudas and capris for the spring.”

Prices range from $49.99 and up for jeans, $15-30 for tops, $7.50 and up for basics and $30 and up for handbags.

Owners Tana Hughes and Portenga opened the store on February 25th, but they have been hosting parties for the shop since last July.

“It’s our first time running a store,” said Hughes. “[We started the business because] we have a lot of daughters and we love to shop!”

Taft has been very supportive of Blue Jeans and Bling and their business has been booming so far.

“The community has taken us under their wing,” said Hughes and Portenga. “We just wanted to thank Taft for supporting us.”

Blue Jeans and Bling is located on 415 Center Street and they are open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Carrizo Picked for New National Historic Landmark Status Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today announced the designation of 13 new National Historic Landmarks in nine different states, including a site associated with the famed Apache scouts, the largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings in the world, and an early 18th-century parish church.

“Each of these landmarks teaches us about the history of our land, our people, and our nation - from pictographs dating back two millennia to a World War II warship,” Secretary Salazar said. “By designating these sites as National Historic Landmarks, we are ensuring that future generations will know these important chapters in our nation’s story and expand opportunities for tourism that generate economic returns for our local communities.”

National Historic Landmarks are nationally significant historic places that possess exceptional value or quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the United States. The program, established in 1935, is administered by the National Park Service on behalf of the Secretary of the Interior.

“These new listings will join approximately 2,500 other sites in the National Historic Landmark Program,” said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis. “These places not only showcase our rich and complex history – from prehistoric time right up to the modern era – but they help drive tourism and boost local economies.”

Dr. Seuss Remembered, The Taft Altar Piece To Be Unveiled Lorax Playing At Taft Fox Theater On March 23rd

By Jane McCabe On March 2nd, last Friday, Dr. Seuss, author and illustrator of many popular children’s books, including The Lorax, an adaptation currently being shown at the Fox Theater, would have been 108 years old. Born on March 2, 1904, Theodor Seuss Geisel died on September 24, 1991, 21 years ago.

During his lifetime he published 46 children’s books, which were often characterized by imaginative characters, rhyme, and frequent use of trisyllabic meter. His most celebrated books include the bestselling Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, Horton Hatches the Egg, Horton Hears a Who!, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

This is the second film adaptation of The Lorax. Its theme continues to be relevant: damage done to the environment by greedy exploitation of natural resources by those interested only in making money.

First published in 1971, it chronicles the plight of the environment and the Lorax, a kindly, orange creature with a large yellow moustache, who speaks for the trees against the greedy Once-ler…

Thneedsville is a place where there are no trees. The people who live there have to buy bottled air because, without trees, there is no photosynthesis and thus the air is polluted and unclean. More than anything a young girl wishes for a tree to grow in her backyard.

Ted, a young boy who is sweet on her, is determined to find her a real, living tree. His grandmother remembers when real trees grew and know to whom he must go if he wishes to learn what brought about the current situation.

Ted rides his scooter out of town, a forbidden thing, and finds the Once-ler living in a tower. Once-ler tells him that he is responsible for the plight of the world because of his greed—ignoring the promise he had made to the Lorax not to chop down trees, he chopped down all of them in order to manufacture a silly garment that he sold a lot of. He became very rich, that is, until there were no more trees to chop down…

Ted is told that the only way the situation can be remedied is if someone cares so much about it that he is willing to start the change. The Once-ler gives Ted a precious thing—a seed—which evil forces, of course, try to wrest from him. Good, however, prevails.

When Ted plants the seed in the center of town, the funny little man who wants things to stay the way they are (because he is able to make money selling bottled air) asks the towns folk if they would like to have real trees, which are dirty and messy, or the clean fake trees which line their streets? The people resoundingly vote for the return of real trees.

This is not my normal choice of movie genres—I sometimes wonder why the manufacturers of things for children insist on painting everything with bright colors, something I find tiresome and exhausting. The effects in modern animated films are very innovative but there is nary a dull moment or color to be found. As usual, I grew restless and eager for the film to end a good half hour before it ended. Who knows what children make of these movies, whether they enjoy the constant panoply of action and color, song and dance? If I have trouble following a story line, I wonder if children follow it.

Last Christmas I actually enjoyed watching a remake of the Rupunzel fairy tale, called Tangled, with my grand-niece on my lap. Watching the wicked step-mother’s efforts to keep Rupunzel locked up in a tower, three-year-old Abbey’s brow crinkled as she commented to no-one in particular, “Kids need to go outside.”

An altarpiece is a piece of artwork, such as a painting or a carving that is placed above or behind an altar. The creation of altarpieces was popular during the Renaissance, particularly in the 15th Century Italy and the Netherlands. The Ghent and the Portinari are well known altarpieces. Altarpieces were named for their location, so the Ghent Altarpiece by Hubert and Jan Van Eyck resides in the city of Ghent in Belgium today and the Portinari in Portinari, Italy.

Therefore, when Jane M McCabe, a resident of Taft and owner of the End of Times Gallery, painted an altarpiece last year, she named it for the city of Taft. The altarpiece took her the entire year to paint. She finished it just a few days before Christmas.

“The subject of much of the art of the Renaissance was religious,” says Jane, “and yet in our modern era artists tend to eschew religious subject matter. When I painted the Altarpiece I felt as though I was tapping into a rich vein of ore, of pure gold.”

The Taft Altarpiece will be unveiled at the gallery, 428 Center Street, on Friday, March 23rd, at 4 p.m. The public is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served.

Jane is looking for a temporary home for the altarpiece—a hall or church with sufficient space—while she seeks a permanent home for it. Its dimensions are approximately 9 ½ x 9 ½ feet. If interested, please speak with her.

Taft Union High School Seeking Prom Dresses The Taft Union High School junior class is asking the public for gently used formal and prom-style dresses, shoes and accessories.

Donations may dropped off at the Principal’s Office until Friday, March 23.

The high school will sell the clothes at Prom Shop in the mirror room by Farlow Gym. Dresses will cost $5, while a dress, shoes and accessories will cost $10. The shop will be open to Taft High students only from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, and to the community form 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 29.

The shop gives students an opportunity to get a good dress at a reasonable price before they shop in the mall, explained junior class adviser Tanya Mauldin.

Local Girl Chosen As Finalist A local girl, LaDuane’a Baida-Shaffer has been chosen as a State Finalist in the Miss American Coed Pageant.

Lala is the daughter of Barbara & Stephen Shaffer of Taft and Celeste Baida of Los Angeles.

This pageant is not a beauty pageant. The pageant places more importance on school activities, involvement with family, community and church, academic achievements, volunteer services, poise and most importantly her own unique personality.

Lala has been very successful in achievements in school work for the last two years, has earned a few certificates for reading, involvement with helping others, and perfect attendance awards.

Lala loves sports: she has been actively involved for the past three years in soccer, basketball, dance, swimming, glee club, t-ball, and loves helping out at the nursing homes, and child-care centers with her mom, Barbara. Lala has received a lot of super reader awards in the past two years from her school. Lala is currently active in all her sports and is looking forward to becoming a Girl Scout next month. Lala needs to raise $700.00 more for her goal of $1,000.00 in sponsorship and advertisement sales from businesses and friends and family pages for the pageant book, and if she meets her goal she will win the State Crown, banner, cash awards, scholarships, and the trip to Disney World in Florida and be eligible for the National Crown, also have a very good chance to earn the Miss American Hostess title for the most ad sales. Members of Soroptimist International of Taft spent the morning working in the dirt at the West Kern Oil Museum this weekend, as part of their annual Saturday of Service event. The event, usually held on the first Saturday in March is part of the club’s effort to participate in the larger organization’s, (Soroptimist International of the Americas) observance of Women’s History Day on March 8th. Members were joined by some industrious young Soroptimists-in-Training and some industrious husbands, affectionately referred to as “Soroptimisters,” who assisted with pulling weeds, raking leaves, and planting new flowers & plants for spring, among other needed projects. In recent years, Soroptimist members have participated in many other community cleanup and beautification projects on their SOS days. The West Kern Oil Museum is set to be the first stop on the Annual Soroptimist Garden Tour and Luncheon, which is scheduled for Saturday of the Labor Day weekend.

Government Spying on Your Social Media

By Dr. Harold Pease Last week a young college student approached me after class with a very disturbing concern.

He had just been interrogated by the FBI for making a video three years ago of him exploding a fire cracker and placing the video on YouTube for others to see. He thought that it would be funny. During the three years since, and unbeknownst to him, the government had been monitoring his every behavior and presented to him, for his perusal, a file an inch thick of every event in his life including his grades from grade school.

If kids are monitored for such normal behavior (I used to set off fire crackers too but I did not put my doing so on the Internet) what can we expect next from our government which now violates the 4th Amendment to the Constitution with impunity? Monitoring our social media 24 hours a day? A new directive suggests that this is now to be common.

The National Operations Center (NOC), a part of The Department of Homeland Security, recently released its Media Monitoring Initiative giving itself permission to “gather, store, analyze, and disseminate” data on millions of users of social media, primarily Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. So far they appear less concerned with the information of the average Joe or Jane, although all is kept just in case, as they do with unmanaged journalists and bloggers. These are defined as “those who use “traditional and/or social media in real time to keep their audience situationally aware and informed,” such as myself. Targeted are those who post articles, comments, or other information to popular Web outlets.

In a recent article entitled “Social Spying,” by Joe Wolverton II, J.D. in the “New American,” Wolverton details the “24hour surveillance” by NOC agents “to track the on-line movements and postings of every level of writer or commentator, from Brian Williams to nearly anonymous bloggers.” The directive is designed “to provide situational awareness and establish a common operating picture” (what ever that means) presumably of targeted audiences. In laymen’s terms it means identifying, isolating, and then potentially silencing opposition, each of which inhibits First Amendment free speech rights.

Of course, the NOC directive denies inappropriate use of the information. All is public, they argue, and gathered through available search engines. That said, they admit looking for “items of potential interest [not defined] to DHS. Once the analysts determine an item or event is of sufficient value [also not defined] to DHS to be reported, they extract only the pertinent [again, not defined], authorized information and put it into a specific web application… to build and format their reports.” Such vagaries allow an unrestrained government to move and operate anywhere it pleases and classify and reclassify citizens as potential enemies even if they have done nothing other than voice opinion in opposition to that of whoever rules.

Are we becoming more like communist China who recently prosecuted Li Tie and two others for essays posted on the Internet demanding greater democracy? They too began with just monitoring. Such postings are considered a threat to China’s political and social stability.

In light of the recently signed National Defense Authorization Act of 2012, this reclassification could eventually get normal citizens classed as threats to political stability, who just wish to preserve their Constitution from a government which chooses to nullify it, placed in Guantanamo Bay and held indefinitely against their will. But I have already written about this new law—the most dangerous piece of legislation in my lifetime.

The Media Monitoring Initiative is a serious violation of the 4th Amendment to the Bill of Rights of the U.S. Constitution which reads: “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searched and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”

Do we care? If a young college student finds it disturbing that the government has been watching what he puts on YouTube, should not older adults be more so? Are you, my reader, going to wait until all the sentinels of liberty are marginalized or are you going to remove your member of Congress that supports either the National Defense Authorization Act or does not use his influence to rescind the Media Monitoring Initiative. At least demand to know where he or she stands on these two important Constitutional issues.

Gusty Winds Prompt Valley-Wide Caution Blowing Dust Raises Particulate Levels Local air officials are issuing a health cautionary statement for blowing dust as a result of gusty winds throughout the Valley air basin on Tuesday, March 6th.

The health caution is in effect for San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, Fresno, Kings, Tulare and the Valley portion of Kern County through this evening. The winds are part of a low pressure system entering the Valley.

Wind-blown dust creates high concentrations of particulate matter (PM), which causes health problems, including aggravating lung disease, triggering asthma attacks and acute bronchitis, and increasing the risk of respiratory infection.

District officials recommend protecting yourself if you are in an area of blowing dust.

Residents in areas of blowing dust are advised to use caution through Tuesday afternoon. People with heart or lung disease should follow their doctor’s advice for dealing with episodes of unhealthy air quality. Additionally, older adults and children should avoid prolonged exposure, strenuous activities or heavy exertion.

Everyone else should reduce prolonged exposure, strenuous activity or heavy exertion.

Robert Irwin Fiscus was born May 2, 1920 to James and Edna (Logue) Fiscus in Sinnamehoning, PA and passed away on February 28, 2012 in Bakersfield, CA. He was one of nine children, seven having survived. Upon leaving high school, after the start of WW II, Robert showed great prowess in mechanics, scholastics and particularly engineering. High AGCT scores landed him the opportunity to attend Yale University, specializing in aircraft engineering and he graduated in the top percentile of his class. He worked his way up the ranks to Second Lt. in charge of B-29 Bomber Service Operations and hundreds of servicemen. After being honorably discharged in 1944, he hitch-hiked his way to California settling in Taft in the late ‘40s. In 1949, Bob took a job at a Mobil Gas Station in Maricopa where he not only became owner/proprietor but met the love of his life, the former Aileen Rowe. The two were married in 1950 and enjoyed 61 years together raising two children and making their home in Maricopa, CA. Bob took employment with Standard Oil Co. of California (now Chevron USA) in 1951, retiring in 1983 as a construction technologist in engineering. Bob was a founding member of Sovale Credit Union (now Chevron Valley.) He was a Maricopa City Councilman from 1968 – 1972. He served on the board of the Local Agency Formation Commission (L.A.F.C.O.) and was a founding member of Kern Co. Council of Governments. Mr. Fiscus also served as Board President of the First Congregational Church of Maricopa from 1975 to the mid ‘90s. He was also responsible for much of the remodeling of that historic building. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Edna Fiscus; his brothers, Jay, Ray and Tracy Fiscus; sisters, Lola Jordan, Celesta Dempsey, Reva Johnson and Verlyn and Charlotte Fiscus. He is survived by his wife, Aileen Fiscus of Maricopa; son, Gary (Eileen) Fiscus of Prospect, VA, son, Michael Fiscus of Emporium, PA, Daughter, Suzy (L.D. Armstrong) Jackson of Taft, and son, Jim Fiscus of Taft; grandchildren, Kevin, David and Mark Fiscus, Emily Maze, Christina Lindsay and Lacy, Kenny and Derik Casparis; 10 loving great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held on Monday, March 5, 2012 , at 1:00 p.m. in the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home Chapel, 501 Lucard St., Taft, CA. Interment followed at the West Side District Cemetery. BLM Invites Public Review of OHV Grant Applications

The public is invited to comment on the Bureau of Land Management’s 2012 grant applications submitted to the California Department of Parks and Recreation Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division. The public review and comment period will run from Tuesday, March, 6 through Monday, April 2, 2012.

The annual OHV grant applications are a key part of the partnership between BLM and the State of California, which issues grants to a variety of entities to improve or mitigate off-highway vehicle recreation. California State Parks’ OHV program will be accepting grant applications from a number of agencies including federal agencies, county and city law enforcement and parks departments, and non-profit organizations. This year, over $27 million is available for allocation. BLM applies for grants from the state each year to help fund and coordinate its OHV program.

Secretary Salazar also announced the acceptance of a boundary clarification and updated documentation for Fort Benton Historic District in Fort Benton, Montana which was designated in 1961.

The National Park Service works with preservation officials and other partners interested in nominating a landmark. Completed applications are reviewed by the National Park System Advisory Board, which makes recommendations for designation to the Secretary of the Interior. If selected, property ownership remains the same but each site receives a designation letter, a plaque, and technical preservation advice.

CDPH Warns Consumers Not to Eat Certain Candies from Pakistan and India Dr. Ron Chapman, director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and state public health officer, today warned consumers not to eat three candies, after tests conducted by CDPH found that all three exceed state standards for lead.

The candies are: Chef ’s Pride Rewadi Candy imported from Pakistan, Shah’s Deer Brand Revdi (Sesame Candy) imported from India, and Shah’s Deer Brand Revdi (Gud) (Sesame Candy) imported from India The companies are voluntarily recalling these products. Consumers in possession of these candies should discard them immediately.

Chef ’s Pride Rewadi Candy was distributed by R&R Importers in Montclair, California. The two Shah’s Deer Brand candies were distributed by Shah Distributors, Inc., in Gardena, California.

Recent chemical analysis by CDPH showed Chef ’s Pride Rewadi Candy, Shah’s Deer Brand Revdi (Sesame Candy) and Shah’s Deer Brand Revdi (Gud) (Sesame Candy) contained as much as 0.12, 0.40, and 0.35 parts per million of lead, respectively. California considers candies with lead levels in excess of 0.10 parts per million to be contaminated.
