Oildorado queen hopefuls announced

To qualify for the Cemeterian of the Year Award a corporate member of the Association must have held an active membership and displayed continued interest in the Association for at least six years, and have meet at least three of the following criteria: • Shown outstanding leadership in the association through committee work.

• Served as a Committee Chairperson.

Bauer started his cemetery career as a Maintenance Worker in February 1998; in 2001 he was promoted to District Forman and then appointed District Manager in 2007.

According to the District Bauer “has worked tirelessly to make the West Side Cemetery one of the most respected in the State.”

Among Bauer’s accomplishments is a total renovation of the Mausoleum, new street signs with solar lighting, new flag pole honoring all branches of the military, replacing most of the equipment, development of the District website and development of the computer program that links his service board to those of his Office manager and District Forman.

Bauer has served on the CAPC Board of Directors fir the past seven years and was elected as the Board’s Vice President for 2015/2016.

Additionally Bauer also serves on the Board of Directors for the California Special Districts Association representing all Special Districts in Central California.

City Council Approves Applica- Taft Chamber seeks donations tion for State CDBG Funding for the Fireworks and hosts Jerry Livingston J.D. “Fund the Fireworks” April 10 Jerry.Taft.Independent@gmail.com The City Council approved filing a grant request to seek $948,330 for public improvement activities which will include an infill curb, gutter and sidewalk project. The project funding will cover $66,163 for general program administration and the balance of $882,167 to be expended on public improvements.

Along with the application the City is seeking approval to expend approximately $433,200 of existing program income. This money is in the City’s Housing Combo Program which includes homebuyer and housing rehabilitation activities.

In other actions the Council declared April 8, 2015, Hall Ambulance Day. Hall Ambulance Service Inc. is celebrating twenty years of service to the city of Taft and the West Side.

Harvey Hall owner of Hall Ambulance Service was present for the declaration along with a number of his West Side Post employees, thanked the Council for his recognition and stressed how much he enjoyed the opportunity he has had to serve the citizens on the West Side.

While receiving the Councils proclamation Hall said he was envious of Mayor Millers opportunity to arrive at the Council Chambers just fifteen minutes before the start of meeting. Hall said as Mayor of Bakersfield he has no such luxury.

The city of Taft as just over $400,000 it needs to expend in its Housing Programs funding. The City is particularly concerned that a failure to expend these funds could result in the State’s requiring the return of this funding to be distributed to other jurisdictions according to City Manager Craig Jones.

Taft is seeking qualified applicants for its First-Time Home Buyer Down Payment Assistance Program and its Housing Rehabilitation Program.

The Home buyer program defines a first time homebuyer as ‘a borrower who has not owned a home during the three-year period prior to the purchase of a home with Program assistance.”

Potential Homebuyers will be required to attend the City’s Homebuyer Education Class in order to participate in the program.

Applicants must meet low income guidelines established by the State as 80% of area median income based on family size.

Maximum assistance is $75,000 and is based on the amount of subsidy necessary to allow the applicant to become a homebuyer while keeping their costs affordable.

These loans become due and payable upon sale or transfer of the title or when the borrower no longer occupies the home

The Housing Rehabilitation Program has a maximum loan amount of $75,000 for rehabilitation or $125,000 for reconstruction projects.

These loans have a 30 year term and interest at 1%.

Program requirements include a qualifying income of 80% of area median income, the property must be located in the city of Taft, the applicant must have sufficient equity to secure the needed program loan amount, any outstanding first mortgage must be fully amortized and a have fixed interest rate.

The Program further has requirements identifying eligible repairs.

Miller Time Hi Everyone, Apparently looking at the past doesn’t always predict the present at least weather wise. As I write this we are expecting a storm to roll through that may dump up to a half inch of rain, we’ll see.

Seems we were preparing ourselves for an early summer, then this cool snap came about. Don’t put away the cold weather gear just yet. As I mentioned before, with the warm weather that we have had recently all those lovely green weeds around town are drying out. With this predicted rain shower there may be a reprieve but it won’t last long. Your City Public Works crews are really stretched thin, so if you could help out, attack those weeds in the alley or out on the strip in front of your residence or business. You’ll feel better and the city will look a whole lot nicer.

Sometimes when you are sitting around and feeling sorry for yourself and the physical maladies that you have, you might think about the passing of a very popular and well respected educator and former high school superintendent from TUHS, Jerry Dragoo. Jerry had always been in tip top shape and was very active with his son in Boy Scouts, going on camping and hiking trips in the Sierra’s. Unfortunately, his son Matt died while driving home on I-5 in a single car traffic accident. In tribute Jerry wanted to leave a momento to their treks in the Sierras by hiking up to their favorite camping spot. Jerry took a turn and tumbled down

an embankment, knocking himself out, and breaking an ankle. He crawled and survived for 6 days alone in a mighty struggle to live when he was finally found. After that ordeal he was on the slopes skiing when he broke his leg. After he recovered from that, he discovered on his walks a shortness of breath and it was discovered he had a heart issues and needed a heart transplant. He was fortunate to receive a new heart and it worked just fine. But, again fate turned cruel again and presented him with a new challenge, cancer. For the last few years he has been in and out of hospitals with all kinds of unimaginable pain and suffering, but he never complained, he never wavered to make his family and friends not baby him. He went and did as much as he could and he was courageous and brave right up to the end last week, when he couldn’t beat this struggle against the mightiest of foes. Fortunately his wife Leslie and daughter Lara and husband and grandkids were there with him as were many of his lifelong friends who were able to bid him farewell. Why this entire life struggle came to him, really one of the very best people you’ll ever know, who can understand it. I know that his story and his life can be used as an example on how to live, how to be a person and a man, how to fight through adversity, how to think of others before self; that was Jerry.

His legacy will long outlive most of the rest of us, rest in peace, finally ole friend, rest in peace.

I’ve been thinking about how people interact recently and how ugly things can get because of what you say or how it is interpreted. As you know there are people who are just plain a** jerks, thinking only of themselves, not caring who they hurt or how they act. When you or I call them out on it, it is because they are doing stupid jerky things. In my mind, a jerk is a jerk, doesn’t matter about their background, creed, color, or religion. But if I’m white and call a black person a jerk or vice a versa what is the reaction by others ??

Why do we in this day and age have to label someone with a tag of race or religion when they are doing jerky things like stealing from us, robbing, us, assaulting us, or acting out in public or saying offensive things. As a white man, am I only allowed to call other white people jerks but not anyone else ?? Why is that ?? Take terrorists, the biggest jerks of all, but if they are not in my race, creed, religion, or color, can’t I call them for what they are, without being labeled insensitive or racist or bias. None of us wants to be hung with that type of label, so we don’t say anything and the jerks of the world take that as a confirmation of what they are doing is acceptable. Seems to me we are heading in the wrong direction and it’s no wonder that kids these days are so confused on what they see and hear. Free speech in America at least is supposed to be a protected right that we all enjoy, but it is being perverted in a way that is changing our culture, and not to the good I might add. If you are going to say something, mean what you say and say what you mean. Don’t say things to provoke, or you might wind up with that label, “Jerk”.

You might think about what a good man like Jerry would say or do, follow his lifelong example.

Spring is in the air, I think, so is spring cleaning time.

Last week, TUHS’s softball team played in the Buchanan Easter tournament and continued their successful season with a 4-2 record. One of the standouts of the tournament was sophomore Olivia Ortlieb. Besides her great defensive play, Ortlieb batted .523 with 3 walks and 3 doubles. That is right on par with her average of .552 this season. With stats like these, we expect many big things from her in the future.

Legalized Plunder—What Happened to the 5-cent Ice Cream Cone?

By Harold Pease, Ph. D When I was a small boy my mother would give each of her kids a nickel to purchase a good-sized ice cream cone at the ice cream parlor near by. Yes, a nickel. Now it would cost $1.50. In 1968, I purchased a new Camaro for $2,700. Today it might cost ten times as much. What happened to our money supply? If I had put the nickel under the mattress to spend today it would not pay for the empty cone. Likewise, had I done the same thing with the $2,700, it may not cover the 7.5% California state sales tax rate on the automobile. This loss of purchasing power some refer to as legalized plunder as central bankers, through the Federal Reserve, decide the value of your money.

The young employee may not notice legalized plunder as, given time and experience, they generally move from one salary grade to one higher. Even then if a salary raise does not exceed the expansion of the money supply it is but a false raise. Those on fixed incomes, and no longer able to climb the economic ladder, feel robbed when their money does not purchase what it once did when they earned it.

The Founding Fathers had experienced the baneful effects of the government’s reducing the value of its citizens money when, during the American Revolution, the value of the dollar had gone down to seven cents. In the Constitution they removed the likelihood of that happening again. In Article I, Section 8, they gave Congress the power to “coin money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign coin…” and in Article IV, Section 10, “No state shall…make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts… .” Congress, not a central bank, would keep a tight reign on the value of the people’s money by authorizing only gold and silver as money.

Thomas Jefferson believed that the “hard (sound) money view”—gold and silver, would be eroded by the creation of a national bank. He wrote: “The incorporation of a bank and the powers assumed have not, in my opinion been delegated to the United States by the Constitution. They are not among the powers specially enumerated.” A Central Bank, he noted, had specifically been opposed in the Constitutional Convention. Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of the Treasury, wanted the federal government to have the power of the elasticity of the money supply believing it to be an appropriate function of government although not specifically enumerated; hence the Bank of the United States was created.

Thus began the battle between the hard (sound) money people, believing it to be immoral for the government, on its say-so alone, to reduce the value of a labor agreement between the employer and the employee just because the employee decided to spend his earnings at a future date, and those that wanted the government to expand or contract the money in one’s pocket at its discretion alone. This encouraged paper money and the resultant expansion and contraction of money, which brought on both the Panic of 1819 and Depression of 1837. Andrew Jackson, and his immediate successor presidents, opposed central banking and removed it.

Jackson saw the national bank as “dangerous to the liberty of the American people because it represented a fantastic centralization of economic and political power under private control.” He wrote: “It is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their selfish purposes….” And, “Many of our rich men have not been content with equal protection and equal benefits, but have besought us to make them richer by act of Congress.” The nation returned to the only constitutionally recognized money as being gold and silver.

The expansion money people arose again with Abraham Lincoln who encouraged the National Currency Acts, which allowed the government to back the Civil War by printing more money, which reduced the value of money not immediately spent. The unsecured money supply ballooned to 137.9% and prices rose by 110.9%.

Grover Cleveland was the last president to insist that, at the very least, paper money had to be backed by Gold—the gold standard. After the turn of the century it seemed that neither party cared. Henceforth, money was what government said that it was worth. In 1913, Woodrow Wilson created the Federal Reserve, largely a private entity, to take-over all money issues. Wilson and his predecessors Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and future president Franklin Roosevelt, were big on creating fiat money. Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon Johnson each heavily inflated the dollar thus participating in legalized plunder. Under Richard Nixon the dollar was no longer redeemable in gold. In just four years Jimmy Carter reduced the value of one’s savings by 8.5 %. George W. Bush too drastically affected the cost of living, as has Barack Obama by $85 billion per month. In the last 14 years prices have at least doubled.

So, should you wonder why ice cream cones are not still five cents and Camaro automobiles $2,700, it is because both parties have opted to ignore constitutional safe guards and fund their spending sprees for welfare or warfare out of the pockets of those who merely choose to delay their spending. This is called legalized plunder.
