Taft Homes The big talk around Taft lately is when the new houses are going to start. The answer is, no one really knows. It is not anyone in Taft’s fault. It is way over our head. For now Bob Colston is still building houses on Amber Street. You can contact Colston Construction at 763-3517. If you have a lot he can also build you a beautiful home there. There are still 7 lots available in the Pilgrim Street, Sunset Lane housing tract. You can contact Freedom Homes about those lots at 758-8434.

It is great to see improvements around Taft. Lincoln Jr. High just keeps looking even better. They got a new sign out front last week. A Street Park got a new bench in the middle of the park that was hit by a car driving through the park awhile back. Buckolies is pretty much a brand new old building that looks terrific. Several improvements will start soon to the 5th Street Plaza off of Center Street.

With Oildorado just a year and a half away it is time for everyone to start cleaning up Taft. A Community Clean Up will take place soon. During the last Community Clean Up several local leaders, Taft College Students, Service Clubs, and several volunteers did a great job. Now it is time for some of the local business owners and home owners to start cleaning up. Not every building and landscaping can look as beautiful as Dr. Walkers Office but some buildings need serious TLC and others could just use some paint. Taft is getting excited for Oildorado. Remember, if you want to have an event affiliated with Oildorado it has to be approved by the Oildorado Board. If you have an idea or anything else let them know so it can be addressed. Do not forget Shaw’s has western wear, boots, and Cowboy Hats for all your Oildorado needs.

On a slightly different note, last week there was a large fire in Taft. As usual most of Taft was there. Some people are there just to watch, some people are there because they are concerned, others are friends of the fire victims, and sadly others are there to see what they can steal later. If you remember the fire at the end of 2012 at the 4th Street Condo’s caused horrible damage. The next day some of our Taft Crooks decided to go in and steal items from those Condo’s, nothing like kicking someone when they are down. Some people are worried and concerned during a fire but it is best to stay away and let the great Kern County Fire Department handle it. Wait until the next day to drive by and if you see someone coming out of the window call the police because they probably should not be there.

Speaking of our Taft Crooks, several of them have been going strong again and it will only get worse with warm weather.

A good friend’s garage was broken into and several tools were stolen. I’ve heard lots of other burglary stories lately as well.

Our Law Enforcement does what they can but our Leaders in Sacramento are blind to normal life and crime. Keep your house and cars locked, windows closed, outside lights on, install motion lights, look outside when the dogs bark, get to know your neighbors and watch out for each other, and call the Police if you suspect anything. If you see anyone try to get a description of the person- height, weight, race, hair color, clothing, hat, glasses, backpack, gloves, etc, if you’re able to get a good look. If there is a suspect vehicle try to see the make, model, license plate, color, dents, anything in back of the truck, etc, if possible. Several Home Invasions have taken place recently in Bakersfield. Keep your eyes open and Stay Positive!

When getting to know the neighbors be aware of the 30 year old tweaker Grandson that is draining all of his sweet grandmas money that lives next store. He has nothing but time to watch your daily patterns until the day he finally breaks into your home. Poor sweet grandma will protect her sweet little 30 year old tweaker grandson with all she has. I would say 25% of burglaries are like this. So many bad things in this world are caused by drugs. Just say “No to drugs,” and stay positive Taft!

Taft Rails to Trails Developer Geary Coates Will Join State of City Line-up Dr. Kathy Orrin, Chamber Executive Director of the Taft Chamber, and Sheri Black, President of the Kiwanis Club of Taft, have announced an addition to the speaker line-up for the fourth annual State of the City Luncheon traditionally held during an April meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Taft. The luncheon is scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m., on Thursday, April 10, at the OT Cookhouse banquet room. Tickets are $15, and reservations are appreciated.

“We are excited to know that Geary Coates, the City’s Developer, will be here to share not only his vision, but also the projects currently on the books for our community”, stated Orrin. The line-up of speakers this year includes Taft Mayor Paul Linder, City Manager Craig Jones, Michael Long (President of the Greater Taft Economic Development Authority-GTEDA), and Harry Starkey (General Manager of the West Kern Water District) in addition to Coates.

It is traditional to hear from City leadership, but the Chamber reserves the right to invite representatives from other organizations they deem also timely and newsworthy.

The Mayor and the City Manager are traditional speakers at this event. Michael Long will speak about the economic future of Taft and the vision the GTEDA has for economic growth in Taft. Harry Starkey will speak to the health of the West Kern Water District and the possible effect of the drought on our surrounding area.

“We hope citizens will take advantage of this chance to get up to speed on what is happening in our town,” stated Executive Director Orrin. “And remember,” Orrin emphasized, “you do not have to be a member of Kiwanis or of the Chamber in order to attend this event. We want people interested in their community to feel welcome to join us.”

Reservations may be made by calling the Chamber at 765-2165 by Tuesday, April 8. The cost is $15 per person.

TRUSTEE VACANCY The West Kern Community College District/Taft College invites interested community members to submit letters of interest to fill a recently vacated trustee position. The term of this interim appointment will expire December 2014. TUHS Ag Program Receives Honors

Taft High School Agriculture Program students were awarded several honors at the annual South Valley FFA Sectional Awards Banquet held each March. Chris Fleming, Hunter Perry, Jake Morton, Jason Fuller, and Austin Doty were awarded the California State FFA Degree. Students earning the State FFA Degree must have earned or invested a minimum of $1,000 and spent at least 500 hours working on their Supervised Agriculture Experience Project. Less than 3% of all California FFA Members receive their State FFA Degree each year. In addition, four students received Sectional FFA Proficiency Awards. Proficiency Awards are awarded based on a student’s involvement in their Supervised Agriculture Experience Project. Mary Hazlewood received a Proficiency Award in the area of Veterinary Science, Chris Fleming in the area of Agriculture Mechanics Design and Fabrication, Josh Hawkins in the area of Agriculture Education, and Elisha Terry in the area of Diversified Livestock Production.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month On Tuesday, April 1st, 2014, the Kern County Board of Supervisors proclaimed April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Kern County. During this brief presentation at the Board’s 9:00AM session, the Department of Human Services (DHS), with support from our partners, will unveil its latest outreach campaign, calling on the community to report suspected child abuse.

Interim Director Dena Murphy will be joined by District Attorney Lisa Green, Sheriff Donny Youngblood, and Tom Corson, Executive Director of the Kern County Network for Children as they ask the community to help us in our efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect.

The month’s events will kick off as DHS joins the Child Welfare League of America and Social Service Agencies across our Nation in calling for the immediate cessation of violence against children in America. On Friday, April 4th, a memorial flag will be raised in Kern County to remember the thousands of children lost nationwide, and in the last year, to child abuse.

The flag will be raised at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, April 4, 2014 in front of the Human Services Building at 100 East California Avenue. The community is invited to join us in this Memorial Ceremony. The flag will be flown throughout the entire month of April at our O.C.Sills building.

Friday, April 4th is also National “Wear Blue Day” to raise awareness of Child Abuse and Neglect.

Two additional flag ceremonies are planned in Kern County. On Friday, April 11th, A flag ceremony will take place in Lake Isabella at the County Complex, 7050 Lake Isabella Blvd. A final flag ceremony will take place in Taft on Friday, April 26th at Kern County Fire Station #21, 303 10th Street in Taft.

Our Month of activities will conclude as we call on Kern County Churches to take time to recognize “Blue Sunday” – a day of prayer for the victims of child abuse and for those who rescue them. Blue Sunday is recognized Nationally on the final Sunday in April, this year on April 27th.

Taft College Opens Boxes of Treasure Donated

by John Louis Stotts Family Taft College biology professor Dr. Greg Golling and nearly 30 staff, faculty and family members opened 5 fossil and gem filled boxes last week that were donated to the college by geologist and former Taft resident John Louis Stotts.

The sealed boxes, some dating back to 1964, were donated to the college geology department by members of Stotts’ family who were present at the opening.

Stotts, a retired geologist who recently passed away, was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologist.

Stotts traveled all over the world working for oil companies as an expert petroleum geologist.

The boxes contained various rocks, gems, fossils, stones and crystals that Stotts had collect over the years. The boxes had never been opened, most since the 1960’s.

Taft High School Trap Club Competes in 2nd Annual TSC Sporting Clay Shoot

Los Padres to Host Wilderness Anniversary Event at Figueroa Mountain

The Taft High Trap Club competed in the 2nd Annual Taft Sportsmen’s Club Sporting Clay Shoot on Saturday February 22, 2014. Through fundraising and donations the club was able to field two teams to shoot 100 clays at the sporting clay match at 5 Dogs Range near Woody.

The Taft High Trap Club receives its funding from the NRA Foundation through Friends of NRA dinners held in and around Kern County. Club Advisor Gary Morris started the club two years ago and it is growing stronger every year including the addition of another Club Advisor, Taft High Teacher Sarah Hamblin.

Morris said, “Writing the grant requests are not that difficult and we would be more than willing to help other schools who are interested apply for the funds as well.”

The Taft High Trap Club has received funds from the NRA Foundation to purchase a clay thrower, clay targets, ammunition, and shotguns. They also receive donations from community members too.

The club does not store its firearms or ammunition on campus and they are not a CIF sanctioned sport, but merely a club that meets after school on Tuesdays to practice. Morris said, “One tough part about our club is we have to travel quite a ways to shoot with other high school clubs. This being Kern County, we would like to see some more clubs

Second Installment of Real Property Taxes Due April 10 Kern County Treasurer and Tax Collector, Jackie Denney reminds the public that the second installment of your Kern County property tax is delinquent if not paid by 5:00 p.m., Thursday, April 10, 2014. In order to avoid a 10% late penalty and a $10.00 delinquency fee, property tax payments must be made in person or postmarked on or before April 10, 2014.

The first of these events is April 5 at Figueroa Mountain Fire Station from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Featured activities will include renown naturalist Joe Martin with his insect display and collection equipment along with guided trail hikes for advanced (10:30am), moderate (noon), and beginning hikers (1:00pm). There will also be educational packing demonstrations and visits from Smokey Bear, Woodsy Owl and Frances Steelhead. More fun activities are scheduled including craft projects for kids.

There will be displays by California Fish and Wildlife, Animal Rescue Team, Los Flores Ranch Park, and Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network. This event is free to the public, and is co-sponsored by Los Padres Forest Association. form. Two Taft Union High School freshmen were elected to serve as the Region 8 officers of the Future Homemakers of America at an FHA convention at Kern Valley High School on March 17.

Patricia Olea will serve as district historian and Taylor Fivecoat will be the district reporter during the 2014-15 school year. They will be officially inducted at the state FHA meeting in Riverside on April 12.

Their job duties include planning for and attending state conventions, leadership meetings and leadership trainings.

The FHA has 10 districts in California.

Cheryl McGathey, the new foods teacher, revived the FHA program again after being dormant for many years.

The club has 25 members and she plans to increase those numbers.

The election of the local officers follows on the heels of a commercial foods competition win by Taft seniors Dana Felix and Brian Ortega in Region 8. They cooked a four-course meal that included pork loin, jasmine rice and cabbage soup

Liberty Under Fire Yes, Social Security Can Be Saved and with Better Benefits

By Harold Pease, Ph. D With our national debt growing by $3 billion a day and Congress giving up offering any real solutions, we are a speeding train heading for a cliff. Most pretend the problem is not real or will just go away. Almost no one is ready for the hyperinflation and street crime that could follow if we do not act quickly and responsibly.

The Tea Party Debt Commission was formed some time ago to provide the federal government a solution. Its final report summarized the problem, “Our government is doing too many things it can’t do well, or shouldn’t do at all, with money it doesn’t have. We are borrowing 43 cents of every dollar we spend….”

They note that the “Government Accountability Office counted no fewer than 47 job training programs, 56 financial literacy programs, 80 economic development programs, 18 food assistance programs, 20 programs for the homeless, 82 teacher-quality programs spread across 10 agencies, and more than 2,100 data centers. All told, we have nearly 2,200 federal programs.” Government is bloated, inefficient, and wasteful.

A federal diet is long overdue, but what should we keep? The Commission’s assessment criteria hinged on four basic values: fiscal common sense, Constitutional limits, economic freedom, and personal self-reliance. For a program to remain, they reasoned, it needed to pass two questions: is it constitutionally authorized, and is it best carried out by the federal government, as opposed to states or private entities? Much of what the federal government does, the Commission found, unfortunately, does neither.

Boldly they opened the unfunded liabilities door, the door neither party dares to open as potentially it could destroy career politicians and political parties. They concluded that they could make Social Security “sustainable and actually improve benefits by harnessing the power

April 4 - 10, 2014 of compound interest.” They noted, “Three decades ago, Chile embarked on a bold transformation of its retirement security system. Today, that system [SMART Accounts] is the envy of the world, giving seniors far better benefits than the old, government-run system ever did.”

Shortly thereafter three counties in Texas adopted the SMART Accounts program in favor of personal accounts and thus those retiring today do so “with much more money and have significantly more generous death and disability supplemental benefits than do Social Security participants.” Moreover, they “face no long term unfunded pension liabilities.” The Commission recommends that, “all state and local governments should have the option of opting into the ‘Galveston model.’ ” Learn more about this aspect of the Tea Party Debt Commission’s recommendations by visiting FreedomWorks.org/ the-tea-party-budget.

The Tea Party Debt Commission suggests that “new workers born after 1981… invest one-half of their payroll taxes (7.65%) in a SMART Account, which they can use to fund their retirement and health care costs in retirement. If they prefer, they can give up their account and opt back into traditional Social Security at retirement.”

The result of this modern approach to funding retirement embraced by the Commission, is that, among other things, it: “improves benefits, doesn’t increase the retirement age, doesn’t cut benefits for people in or nearing retirement, and doesn’t touch the existing Social Security Disability insurance program.” It also “reduces federal payroll tax receipts by about $500 billion over the ten-year period.”

The Commission also opened Medicare, the second major Pandora’s box of unfunded liabilities, but Tea Party recommendations giving Medicare seniors the right to opt into the privileged Congressional health care plan will require space not permitted here.

So far, neither party has offered other ideas and the Tea Party solution has been virtually ignored. The speeding train does not have to go over the cliff. There are great thinkers and solutions that can save us because they are not forced to do so within the parameters of self-interest and political parties. Fortunately the Tea Party works successfully outside these restrictions. Please tell your Congressman to seriously explore these recommendations especially in light of the fact that their plans have not worked. This train must get off the track that it is now on while there is yet time.
