Just say No! I recently saw on the news that kids at an Elementary School in Colorado are selling Marijuana to other kids.

People talk all of the time about things changing in this world for the worst. Even crazier about that story is the kids took the drugs from their Grandparents. My Grandma did not cuss, drink, or do much of anything else so the last thing I could ever think about her doing is drugs. Lots of people do have a past but most people agree drugs are bad. I knew of a few people in school whose parents let them do drugs and all of them went down the wrong path and I’m pretty sure they still are on the wrong path to this day. It is like the old commercial said, “Parents that use drugs have kids that use drugs.”

Maybe I’m wrong but I blame so many problems in this world, and in Taft on drugs. If you look at the arrest pictures you can see that most of the people arrested for burglary have done a drug or two just by looking at their picture. More than likely you have seen them in the arrest pictures several times in the past. Colorado has also had a rise in accidents since they legalized Marijuana, what a surprise. I’ve said it before but all the bad things the D.A.R.E. Officers taught me when I was a kid I now know is true. Please do not support legalizing any drug down the road. “Just say No to drugs!”

Graduations are coming up and so is summer so kids will have more time on their hands without supervision.

Talk to your kids about drugs. Know where your kids are, know their friends, and know their friends parents, and friends older siblings. Be strict not sorry. The old saying, “kids will be kids,” is true a lot of the time but if your kids know you’re sitting in the chair watching Jimmy Fallon waiting for them to get home and not sleeping with your bedroom door closed they might think twice.

Keep the kids busy this summer. The Natatorium will be open, there is a summer basketball league at the Rec and for the older kids join a gym, see movies at the Fox Theatre, bowl at West Side Lanes, join the Taft Tigersharks Swim Club, join a Youth Group at one of the Churches, join the new Whiffle Ball League, get the family a membership at the Sportsmen’s Club and do family shoots, ride dirt bikes, train for the upcoming football, volleyball and cross country seasons, or hopefully find a part time job. Bored kids can get into trouble.

Changing pace a bit, hopefully you have noticed that Oil has been in the news a lot lately. Mainly because of the Oil Severance Tax and Fracking. Please oppose the Oil Severance Tax. They keep saying California is the only State that does not have an oil tax which I believe is true but look at all of the other taxes, fees, environmental issues, and everything else California has that the others don’t. Now they say Fracking is unsafe but there is no proof. They are using scare tactics without any evidence to support their statements. Fracking is needed to get our oil. Oil is needed for so many things in our everyday life. Taft is an Oil Town. Some people say we do not need oil. This is simply not true. Every one, everywhere needs oil and Kern County really needs it. It does not matter if you’re a Teacher, Doctor, Lawyer, Cop, Garbage Man, Plumbing, etc, without oil in Kern County your job probably would not of ever been here. Oil is the backbone of California. After all, we allow Japan to sell us millions of cars with zero import tax. I know that is a national problem not a California problem. Why would our Government not tax them but tax us so much. So one step we can take that will help America, especially Taft with Sales Tax is to buy a beautiful Chevrolet or Buick at Taft Chevrolet. All of the Oil Companies give

You have taken an eyesore and developed a beautiful asset to Taft City’s downtown business area.

Editors Note: 5th Street Plaza was planned as far back as 30 years ago when Center Street merchants and building owners asked the city to create the plaza. Today, the plaza is a reality. It offers downtown a gathering place for people to relax with friends, enjoy a green outdoor space in the middle of the shopping district, and provides a place for public events. Soon the city will install benches similar to those at the Oilworkers Monument so people may sit and enjoy the park. Businessman Gary Joyce, who restored the old Pioneer Mercantile building and saved it from demolition, drew up new plans for the proposed 5th Street Plaza and encouraged the city to pursue the original idea to make a park on the former 5th Street between Center and North Streets. The downtown is the heart of the city, and the dedication of 5th Street Plaza as a downtown public park is just the beginning of more to come that will reflect the history of Taft and the pride we all have for our community. our schools, the Rec, and everything else on the Westside support, now we need to give them our support and vote against any Oil Severance Tax. On a positive note the 5th Street Plaza is looking great.

Bob Colston is starting the dirt work soon for Sandy Creek Estates. Several other projects are in the works around Taft. I get asked almost everyday where Taco Ball is going to be located. I do not know but at the State of the City Luncheon they said it is approved and work will be started on it by the end of the year. Taft should be looking even better by Oildorado 2015. A quote from a great movie, A Field of Dreams, “If you build it, he will come,” I hope with all the projects being built soon that several great families will move to Taft. Stay positive Taft!

Taft High School Honor Night Has Big Winners May is Foster Care Awareness Month Triston Ginn, Austin Pendergrass and Victoria May were the big winners at the Taft Union High School Honors Night Monday April 28th. To the applause of an auditorium full of their peers, parents and friends, the trio walked off stage with more than $13,000 in college scholarships. Each received $8,000 from the Confidence Foundation, originally Whittier Oil. Ginn received a total of $14,675 including $3,000 from Midway Sunset, and $1,000 each from San Joaquin Refining and Oildorado. Pendergrass received a total of $14,450 including $3,000 from Midway Sunset and $1,000 each from the Class of 1950 and San Joaquin Refining. May received a total of $13,300 including $1,250 from Midway Sunset, and $1,000 each from San Joaquin and Chevron Valley Credit Union.

Altogether, 75 students received 294 scholarships from 63 donors totaling $209,465. The Taft College Merit Scholarship was the biggest donor, chipping in $39,600.

Other big winners were: — Alan Reynoso with $8,250, including $2,500 from the Bob Barrett Class of 1958, $2,000 from Midway Sunset and $1,500 from the Chevron AVID Scholarship.

The West Side Mosquito and Vector Control District Issues Spring Notice The West Side Mosquito and Vector Control District would like to inform local residents that mosquitoes are very active in our area at this time. District personnel have located several mosquito breeding sources in Taft and early trap counts have been high. Despite what some may view as conventional wisdom, the current drought conditions have done little to curtail the presence of mosquitoes in our community. Mosquitoes do not require large bodies of water to maintain their populations and will seek smaller water sources during times of drought. In addition, mosquito species native to the District are perfectly content to seek out man-made sources around our homes and businesses.

Female mosquitoes take a blood meal to produce their eggs, which are deposited in raft-like structures in standing water sources. As such, the most effective way to control mosquitoes is to eliminate sources of standing water. To be specific, water should not be allowed to sit or “stand” for longer than three days. In warm weather a mosquito can easily complete its life cycle in less than a week. Any water left standing for a few days or more may become a breeding source. A female mosquito may deposit 50-200 eggs at a time, so even the smallest source of standing water may become a serious problem.

The District would like to ask for your help to eliminate mosquito breeding sources in our community. Please take time to look for sources of water around your home and property and eliminate any standing water. District personnel have treated many swimming pools that still contain small amounts of rain water. In addition, spas, ornamental ponds and water

The Kern County Department of Human Services, along with all of our community and professional partners serving the needs of Kern County’s foster children, is celebrating May as National Foster Care Awareness Month. This month allows us the opportunity to celebrate foster children and the dedicated individuals & professionals who opentheir hearts and homes to care for the 1,766 Dependent Children of the Court in Kern County.

The Kern County Board of Supervisors will proclaim May as Foster Care Awareness Month on Tuesday, April 29th, 2014, at 9:00AM. We invite all of our community partners to join us at the Board of Supervisors chambers for this important recognition.

Foster Parents and Social Workers will be celebrated on Thursday, May 1st, at Hodel’s beginning at 5:30 P.M. as the Department of Human Services and the Bakersfield College Foster & Kinship Care Education Program host a dinner and training. The topic of this year’s training is “Empowering Resource Families in a Changing World.”

This yearly event works to support our current Resource families, both foster and relative families, through continued training opportunities, while also providing the opportunity for Social Workers to get to know these families in a learning and interactive environment.

Foster Youth will be celebrated on Thursday, May 22nd, 2014, at the annual Independent Living Program Graduation.

Additional details will be provided closer to the event.

We are always in need of loving families willing to open their hearts and homes to Kern County’s foster children, especially those willing to take care of our teens, sibling groups, and children with special medical needs.

Flag Raising in Memory of Abused Children The Kern County Departmemt of Human Services held a flag raising ceremony at the Taft Fire Station last week in honor of child abuse victims.

More than 80 people turned out to hear from Supervisor David Couch and child advocates during Child Abuse Awareness Month.

The prevention of child abuse and neglect is a community responsibility. It can be a matter of life or death.

Child abuse and neglect happens wherever children are, where they live, sleep, learn or play. In 2013, close to 18,000 reports of suspected abuse were filed in Kern County.

Many more cases never get reported. Tragically, during 2013, 4 Kern County children died, 5 nearly died, and 8 suffered severe injuries as a result of child abuse or neglect — 16 of these 17 children were under age 4.

Anything you do to support children and parents in your family and community helps reduce the likelihood of child maltreatment. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and Kern Cares Make A Difference is your opportunity to spread the message that we all can play a part in providing safety and support to children in our community.

Make a difference during by making a pledge to help keep kids safe. Smile at a fussy baby in line at the grocery store. Be a friend to the kids and parents you know. Get involved. Advocate.

Athlete of the Week 5-2-15

One of the features at Saturday’s West Kern Oil Museum Pioneer Days event will be a blacksmithing demonstration by Jacob Hines, who continues the family tradition started by his grandfather, Joseph Fregeau, who donated the forge, equipment and tools to the museum.

The West Kern Oil Museum’s annual Pioneer Days celebration on Saturday will include a book signing.

Bakersfield author Richard Roux, a teacher at South High School, will be on hand to autograph his book, “Bootleggers, Booze and Busts: Prohibition in Kern County, 1919-1933.”

“It has a lot of information pertaining to the Westside, and I was able to use some photos from the Museum,” he said.

Copies will be on sale during the event.

Pioneer Days will feature its traditional antique gas engines, working blacksmith shop, model railroad and a barbecue and plant sale.

Westside area quilters also will be on hand giving demonstrations and displaying and their handmade crafts.

Gates will open at 9 a.m. and activities will run until 4 p.m.

The barbecue will be dished up beginning at 11:30 a.m. tri-tip, chicken, beans, salad, bread and desserts made by Museum volunteers.

Admission is free, but the cost for the barbecue is $10 for adults and $5 for children under the age of 10.

All of the Museum’s buildings and exhibits will be open, and a 50/50 drawing will be held.

Yard sale May 30-31 Museum volunteers remind Westsiders that it’s time to clean out the garage and storage areas.

The Museum’s annual Yard Sale will be May 30-31 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Items for the sale will be accepted Thursday -Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on Sundays from 1-3 p.m.

Sorting and pricing everything takes time, so the volunteers encourage everyone to bring donations to the Museum as soon as possible.

If you can’t bring your donations, pick-up can be arranged by calling the Museum at 765-6664.

The Yard Sale is one of the Museum’s most successful fundraisers, and it is a great way to make space in your garage. Donated items may be tax deductible.

The newly formed Westside Wreck Hers will be hosting their first home bout on Saturday June 7, 2014 There will be food, music, vendors selling merchandise and lots of hard hitting derby action.

Taft’s first roller derby league, The Westside Wreck-Hers, was created to teach women how to skate, along with the FUNdamentals of roller derby. Our mission is to empower women through athleticism, sisterhood, and community involvement. Roller derby is an entirely different world. You can be yourself and be accepted. We are school teachers, homemakers, correctional officers, secretaries, bartenders, tattoo artists. We come from all walks of life. We are all shapes, sizes, and ages. But we share one common goal: DERBY! The league is run by the skaters for the skaters. Westside Wreck Hers was founded by several roller derby players from Kern County who have many years of experience skating and playing roller derby. It is sponsored by the West Side Recreation and Park District, who provides an outdoor facility for the ladies to use for training purposes. The Wreck Hers are also sponsored by Black Gold Coffee and Deli.

Currently, the Wreck Hers have well over 20 women skating with the league. Many have passed their skill evaluations and are now eligible to play. The Wreck Hers are building relationships with other nearby derby teams and have been picking up scrimmages to participate in.

The Wreck Hers have their very first home bout on June 7th at 801 4th Street, gates will open at 4PM and wheels will roll at 5PM. BAKERSFIELD —Taft Union High School presumptive valedictorian Clayton Wikoff was awarded the 23rd Congressional District of California 2014 Merit Award by Congressman Kevin McCarthy on Friday<cq: April 25>.

He was one of 18 Kern County high school seniors to receive the honor after being nominated by their principals.

“This award is not only about outstanding academic achievement; it is also meant to recognize the character and positive values that these students uphold,” McCarthy said.

“We honor the hard work and dedication that these exemplary young men and women have demonstrated in their scholastic and community endeavors.”

Wikoff has a 4.36 grade point average and is the leading candidate for valedictorian at graduation ceremonies on June 4. He said he plans to major in mathematics and engineering at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where he has a full-ride ROTC scholarship worth $60,000 a year. He hopes to be a foreign-exchange student in Germany his sophomore year. His family is hosting Felix WIldberger, an Austrian foreign-exchange student, this year, and Wikoff wants to visit him in Europe.

After graduation, Wikoff will enter the Air Force as a second lieutenant and plans to be a fighter pilot and serve for 20 years. He also plans to earn a master’s degree while in the Air Force in hopes of becoming an engineer.

The Air Force is an appropriate choice. One uncle served in the Air Force; another in the Coast Guard. One grandfather was in the Air Force and another in the Army.

Each of the 18 Kern County and five Tulare County seniors also chose a teacher who inspired them. Wikoff chose long-time English teacher Caroline Schoneweis.

“She helps with whatever questions I have in English, but she also helps with scholarship applications and conversations about college decisions. She is the adviser to the National Honor Society,” Wikoff praised.

It is a two-way street. Schoneweis said, “Clayton has inspired me innumerable times with his creativity and his willingness to strive to do his best so I consider this a great honor.”

The Kiwanis Club of Taft was honored to have, as its guest today, Congressman Kevin McCarthy. About 50 Kiwanis Members and invited guest enjoyed listening to his ideas, concerns and observations about the direction the United States is going. He assured us, it is not as bad as it appears in the news and depending which network you watch, there is differing opinion.

The Congressman spoke to us about his early years, when he bought and sold cars to put himself through college, used some of the money to open a small business, Kevin’Os Deli and his rise through the political arena to his current position as Majority Whip of the House of Representatives.

He also enlightened us on the necessity to see the Keystone Pipeline from Canada to Texas, which could provide the United States with energy independence, be constructed.

The Canadians have the option to sell energy to the USA or to other foreign nations. Typically, the US import fuels from countries such as Venezuela, who is not a true friend of this country, rather than purchasing from our neighbor to the North. It is a safe and viable project with the prospect of thousands of jobs and another step towards energy independence.

He spoke of the recent oil boom going on in our northern states. Because of the demand for workers, it is not uncommon for hotel rooms to be as high as $300 per night and sign on bonuses of $1000 dollars for those applying for employment at fast food restaurants. This is the kind of economy created when private business is allowed to apply its trade without excessive regulation or government intervention.

Congressman McCarthy described his political heroes, including Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan. He is an avid study of both and holds the highest regards for both men. He, in fact, has paintings of both in his office. He continued to speak about how the USA is still the greatest nation in the world and how our reputation in the eyes of the world has diminished. He explained that the current foreign policy has created a condition where our allies have a distrust of us and our enemies do not fear us. This invites those who do not like the US to test our resolve.

The Congressman describe how California, which has a larger economy than most nations, continues to lose good jobs and companies to other states due to increasing taxes and regulations. He discussed education and how the Department of Education takes 25% of all education dollars for its use. This money should be going to the classroom instead of paying for a government department doing nothing for education.

After answering several questions, the Congressman was invited to visit Oil Park, newly built by the West Side Recreation Department and to tour the recently opened MCCF operated by the City of Taft.

Liberty Under Fire Free Speech Zones on Bundy Ranch Violated First Amendment

By Harold Pease Ph. D Perhaps the most offensive display at the Bundy Ranch Standoff was the posting by the BLM representatives of a sign FIRST AMENDMENT AREA for protestors April 1. This coming days before the standoff certainly demonstrated their foreknowledge of impending opposition. An expandable red plastic three-foot-high wall encircled the area. In other words, those verbalizing disagreement with the BLM’s heavy-handed confiscation of Bundy cattle could only express themselves within this restricted area or risk being arrested.

Such was offensive to participants who promptly added to the sign “1st AMENDMENT IS NOT AN AREA” and thereafter refused to do their protesting where allowed by the government. Besides the area was too far away from the action causing the protesting. A sympathizer posted on the Internet a map of the United States with the words FREE SPEECH ZONE written over the length of the nation from California to South Carolina; this was the Founders interpretation and reverenced as so until more recent times.

Dave Bundy was the first to be arrested for taking video footage from a state highway of BLM agents rounding up his family’s cattle refusing to remain in the restricted area.

Video footage now available showed that armed snipers had their guns trained on the family during the incident. Family members were told that they, “had no first amendment rights except for up by the bridge where they had established an area for that.” One does not have to wonder why the Bundy ordeal attracted freedom buffs from as far away as Connecticut.

I first heard of free speech zones during the George W. Bush Administration when there were so many demonstrations against invading Iraq. College campuses initiated the zones in what appeared to be designed to intentionally limit opposition. They were always too small and if more than one zone were allowed they were separated, seem-

ingly to minimize the size of the opposition. A nephew, in San Francisco demonstrating against the war, was arrested because he could not fit within one of the small circles. He and hundreds more, also unable to fit within the approved dissent areas, were taken to warehouses somewhere in the city and housed until all were processed. He was confined for three days. The slow processing he considered intentional punishment for his dissent. I have spoken out against these 1st Amendment areas since. They do not exist in a free country.

The First Amendment clearly states that, “Congress shall make no law… abridging… the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” Since Congress is the only entity that can make law as per Article I, Section 1 of the Constitution and since they have never passed such a law; the Executive Branch has no authority to “pen” dissent.

Unfortunately such has been altered by recent court decisions “stipulating that the government may regulate the time, place, and manner—but not content—of expression,” hence the origin of free speech zones—decidedly a court perversion. “Though free speech zones existed in limited forms prior to the Presidency of George W. Bush; it was during Bush’s presidency that their scope was greatly expanded” (Wikipedia). After September 11, they were common. President Bush used the Secret Service to make certain such were not near where he might speak or pass by, a procedure closely emulated by President Barack Obama.

Dissent is therefore noticeably reduced and less likely to be filmed. If such had been used against Martin Luther King, Jr. the Civil Rights Movement may never have gotten off the ground. Those refusing to dissent only in the government’s “proper” areas are charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, or trespassing. If the approved dissent areas are far from the president (some a half mile away) he may never know that the people are unhappy with him.

For the Bundy friends and neighbors, the governments “First Amendment Area” had the same shape and similarity as a cattle pen where the people would be cordoned off and neutralized. How can this be seen as petitioning the “Government for a redress of grievances?” No government!

This is nothing more than a ploy to reduce dissent and the more regimental that you are, as in the case of the Bundy Standoff, the more you will use it. Court approval or not it is clearly unconstitutional. The Founders would have called it tyranny.

Heritage Park Easter Parade Residents of Heritage Park turned out on Easter weekend to celebrate Easter and deliver Easter eggs to grandchildren and family members. The parade featured several motorized wheel chair entries as well as marching ladies. The parade was judged by a panel of residents. The event is held each year by park residents for family and friends.
