Taft Chamber 7th Annual Car Show, May 30 with Live Music, Vendors, and Fun Pre-register today for the 7th Annual Rails to Trails Classic, Car, Truck, and Motorcycle Show hosted by Taft District Chamber of Commerce. Join us Saturday, May 30, 2015 at the highly anticipated car and motorcycle show returning to Taft. Day of registration will be at 6th Street and Supply Row from 7am to 9am with judging starting at 10am. Each pre-registered vehicle will receive a goodie bag with a t-shirt. Early registration is due by May 27 for $25 per entry and registration the day of the event will be $30. T-shirts may be ordered for an additional cost.

There are 14 different entry classifications for Cars and Trucks, and 4 categories for Motorcycles, each receiving a dash plaque and a chance for award trophies for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. Craft, Business, and Food vendors will be set up along the trails with a beer garden from the Tumbleweed Cafe, bounce houses, and live music from Fuzzbox Voodoo and Divided Highway.

Remembering Our Fallen Heroes

by William R. Taft In the next several months there will be a lot of Graduation Parties, Weddings, kids coming home and leaving for college, Retirement Parties, and several other events. There are a lot of places on the Westside to have your party or have them cater at your place. Some of the popular Westside Caterers are All American BBQ, Flaco’s Taco’s, Taft Lions Club, Tumbleweed Café, and most of our Restaurants also cater.

Don’t forget several Restaurants have large and small rooms to hold events. Some places also will rent the entire Restaurant out- OT Cookhouse, The Bank Sports Lounge, Hacienda, Jo’s Restaurant, Black Gold Brewery, Paik’s Ranch House, La Salsa, Ong’s Café, Albertson’s, and Oasis. Some other great places to hold events are The Rec, Taft Petroleum Club, Taft Moose Lodge, Masonic Lodge, Taft Veterans Hall, inside or outside at the Fort, West Kern Oil Museum, and the Pioneer Mercantile Building 2nd floor. Some nice outdoor places for events are the A Street Park, Franklin Field, BBQ area next to Oil Field at the Rec, and Veterans Park.

Spend your tax dollars in Taft. If you watch the news you see how much love Bakersfield gives Taft. If something bad happens in Taft we are the front page or top story, if it is good we are the last story or several pages back. Support Taft, not Bakersfield, we have to take care of each other. The Bakersfield love really makes me miss the old days of watching Taft College Football crush Bakersfield. Keep our Pride here in Taft, be Proud of Taft, Taft is what we make of it. I love Taft, don’t you?

The Taft Relay for Life raised over $42,000 last weekend. It was a happy yet emotional event for many. Several people worked very hard, the entertainment was great, the weather was nice, the Red Wagon had huge lines, the food and drinks were yummy, and Taft threw a good punch right at cancer.

Christine Bryan lead the Survivor Lap. Thank you to everyone that pitched in for this fight against cancer. Thank you to Kristy Edwards, Justina Howell, Avengers for a Cure, Fire and Ice Cheer Team, Glor’s Angels, and several others did a great job raising money but this year’s big winner was Edith Patin.

Edith raised the most money for this fight. The Soroptimist Club (SWAK) raised the most as a group.

The Posse and the Wooden Nickel Gang were out at Relay.

They let everyone know they will start attending some events and will be out in full force in September. The Maids of Petroleum were there also. The Maids of Petroleum have already helped out at several local events. Billy Long and Heather Foss did a great job leading the event. The Taft Relay for Life was gigantic the first several years. This year and last there were not near as many teams. Several people said, like they always do in Taft, “I didn’t know it was this weekend.” It was advertised all over Facebook, the Driller, and here in the Taft Independent. People are busy but the fight against cancer is probably more important than whatever else you were doing last weekend. In their defense there are usually several events to raise money for Relay but this year there were only a few. Start making plans now to get your service club, sports team, church, friends, Team Cuyama, Team Fellows, Team Maricopa, Team Tupman, team Oil Workers, or whatever else to be in next year’s Relay for Life. As always thank you Edith for your hard work, not just for Relay but for everything you do for Taft. See if you or your team can take away the Championship from Edith and the Soroptimist Club next year. Think of an event you can do next year to raise money for Relay. If you have ideas for next year’s Relay for Life please get involved and go to the meetings. Rather it be ideas for booths, teams, food, entertainment, special laps, etc, please attend the meetings. There is no “I” in team, so please join this fight.

By Congressman Kevin McCarthy We all know the Gettysburg Address: “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”

But how often do we think about the rest of the speech?

Lincoln ended his address saying: “The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but can never forget what they did here. It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they have, thus far, so nobly carried on. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation shall have a new birth of freedom; and that this government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

On this Memorial Day, we remember our fallen heroes who gave their lives, their “last full measure of devotion,” so that we could remain free, so that the world would not suffer under tyranny, so that our families could remain safe.

On this bittersweet day, we must remember those who fought and died for us, but we also must honor them by committing ourselves to the future.

Let us remember that this great country is unique and that we remain a beacon of freedom and hope for the world.

Let us remember that we stand for human dignity and our inherent moral equality. And let us never forget that we are exceptional precisely because of the principles that so many of our men and women in our history have died for. As a country, we must live each day for those principles.

Today, we enjoy a long weekend. We probably get to spend a little extra time with our families and friends. We can barbecue, sit in the sun, play some baseball and football, and enjoy all of the little things that we have living in a free and independent nation. But throughout this day and throughout our community, we must remember—we must remember those who gave everything in defense of our nation. We are a grateful community and we must never forget.

Our nation—and so many other nations—remain free because of our servicemen and our servicewomen. Today and every other day, we must honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice so we can enjoy our freedoms.

The 2015/2016 school year will begin the week of August 24. The program is for children ages 3-5. Fees vary per class. The 89th Commencement Ceremony Scheduled for Friday, May 22 Taft College will celebrate the success of over 250 students who have earned an Associate Degree or Certificate on Friday, May 22 when it hosts the 89th Commencement Ceremony at Martin Memorial Stadium. Based on Candidacy for Graduations applications received by the College, more than 500 degrees and certificates have been earned in 2014/15 - more than twice the number of graduates nearly ten years ago.

“Student success is the mission of Taft College,” says Dr. Dena P. Maloney, SuperintendentPresident, West Kern Community College District. “Completing a degree or certificate program at Taft College infinitely improves the opportunity for success upon transfer to a four-year school, or out in the workforce. We are thrilled to see the growth in the number of students who are reaching their educational goals and achieving their dreams. “ This year’s graduating class includes a mother and her daughter, and a pair of siblings. Jeannette Rubio and her daughter Kassidy Rubio have earned Associate degrees in Direct Support Education and Liberal Arts and Humanities, respectively. Both started taking classes at Taft College in 2012. They took a number of classes together, shared textbooks, and provided support when the going got tough. “I have a great sense of completion”, noted Jeannette Rubio. “It doesn’t matter how old you are – you can do it if you have the right motivation.” Daughter Kassidy agrees. “We each helped push each other through those moments when one of us was worried about a class. We kept each other on task”. Brother and sister Edwin Juarez and Cristy Mojica shared a similar experience. Both are completing Taft College having earned Associate’s degrees. Notes Cristy, “We took classes together and supported one another. It was a great experience!”

This year’s commencement ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. at the Taft Union High School, Martin Memorial Stadium. Four students have earned the College’s Highest Achievement Award.

Jaron Deacon, who has earned an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts with an emphasis in Math and Science, will address the class of 2015 during the commencement ceremony. He, along with Brynn Eenigenburg (Associated Degree in Business Administration) and Antuanette Garza (Associate Degree in Liberal Arts with an Emphasis in Communications), earned a perfect 4.0. Dana Gradowitz is also being recognized with a Highest Achievement Award by earning a 3.96 GPA in the Career Technical Education curricula (Court Reporting and Criminal Justice Administration). All four students will receive a plaque in recognition of their academic achievement.

The college will host its annual Scholarship Luncheon on Friday May 22 at 11:30 at OT Cookhouse. The luncheon will include the awarding of 44 different scholarships totaling $60,275 to 62 Taft College graduates. In addition, the College has awarded 89 graduating seniors from Taft Union High School and Maricopa High School with Merit Awards totaling $53,400. The Taft College Dental Hygiene Program will hold a separate celebration luncheon for its graduates on Saturday, May 23rd. Seventeen students have successfully earned an Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene and will be qualified to take the Dental Hygiene board certifying exams later this summer.

City Council Salutes Fort’s 75th Year Jerry Livingston J.D. Jerry.Taft.Independent@gmail.com The Fort is a land mark building that has been a part of Taft’s history for 3 quarters of a century.

Designed by architect W. Francis Parsons and built out of adobe brick made on site, construction began on November 11, 1938 and took 83 workman 18 months to complete.

One of the many Works Project Administration buildings constructed during the Roosevelt administration The Fort is actually slightly larger than Sutter’s Fort in Sacramento, CA on which it is patterned.

After its completion in 1940 the building housed federal, state and county offices with the South wing also housing the county hospital until the Westside hospital opened.

World War II saw the housing of the local draft board office and during the Korean War a National Guard Unit was stationed at The Fort.

This historic building also housed the County Health Clinic where thousands of west side children received vaccinations including the newly developed polio vaccines.

Thanks to the efforts of Assemblyman Trice Harvey The Fort was declared a State Historic Landmark on May 8, 1980 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 22, 1981, saving the building from demolition.

Originally placed in the care of the West Kern Oil Museum, The Fort was handed over to the management of the The Fort Preservation Society in December of 1992.

Tuesday night, members of the Society including board President Dr. Loretta Lipscomb and Executive Director Edith Lauren where present as the City Council read and presented a proclamation from the City commemorating The Forts 75th birthday.

Planning Commission Report Wednesday night’s Planning Commission meeting continued a theme begun by the City Council when they heard two proposed changes to Taft’s zoning code.

Earlier this month the Council adopted a new ordinance regulating the sale and use of drug paraphernalia.

At its regularly scheduled meeting the commission addressed an area of the law usually regulated at the state level. Except in certain designated areas smoking is not allowed in business establishments. The state law covers many aspects of tobacco use and sales but does not cover hookahs or hookah lounges which have recently gained in popularity.

At staff ’s recommendation the Commission adopted a Zoning Ordinance revision which defined hookahs and hookah lounges and prohibiting them in Taft’s commercial and industrial zoning districts.

A second amendment to the Zoning Ordinance was put forward by staff addressing the sale and use of smoking lounges and tobacco shops.

All such shops will be required to submit an application for a Conditional Use Permit and must show that they have obtained a State Board of Equalization Cigarette and Tobacco License.

The new regulations will include definitions that will list the sale of e-cigarette and vapor cigarettes as part of the products listed for sale that will require the need for obtaining a CUP. Further requirements of the new code sections will have the standard distance requirements from schools, school’s parks, arcades and other locations likely to be frequented by children.

Tobacco shops and lunges will be allowed in all commercial and industrial zones provide the proper CUP has been obtained.

In both cases the stated interest in recommending these zoning changes to the council is an effort by the city of Taft to promote community health.

Miller Time Hi Everyone, What a great day we had in Taft for Mother’s Day weekend. The Rec District built and dedicated their new wiffle ball field next to last year’s ‘Oil Field’ wiffle ball field at the new recreation complex. The new Dodger field replica was named ‘Scully Field’ in honor of long time Dodger broadcaster Vin Scully. There were lots of hopes and prayer that the Dodger legend himself would show for the dedication. As you know by now, indeed he did show up at the request of his friend and Taft’s friend Congressman Kevin McCarthy. Now Kevin had a dual purpose. He of course was here for last year’s dedication and he wanted to help the Rec District, but also last year he homered over the Green Monster and he wanted to repeat that swing of the bat over the wall of the new Dodger field.

Vin was truly touched by the whole event and sent this note to me; DEAR MAYOR MILLER. PLEASE ACCEPT THIS BRIEF NOTE EXPRESSING MY JOY AND APPRECIATION FOR ALL THE FESTIVITIES SURROUNDING THE NAMING OF SCULLY FIELD. MY WIFE AND I WERE OVERJOYED AND DEEPLY TOUCHED

As an aside, the reason for the VIP passes were due, not to special favors, but due to the Congressman’s security detail that required only so many people inside and they had to be known to Rec staff.

If you were turned away at the door don’t be offended, you had to be on the list. Vin did sign a few autographs, but his handwriting was very slow and deliberate so that he couldn’t fulfill everyone’s request as much as he wanted to. It was great day for Taft, a special day for the Rec District, and the first time in anyone’s memory that a key to the city was given to a dignitary. It was also good to be your Mayor. Well done, everyone, well done.

The City Council just recently signed a proclamation declaring the week of May 10-16, 2015 Law Enforcement Appreciation Week. We are proud of our law enforcement officers on the Westside and I believe we all appreciate their making us feel safe. No one in their normal jobs has to deal with and make critical and sometimes life threatening decisions in an instant. When you think about it, when was your last encounter with the police ?? Was it in a casual setting or were you going a little too fast or texting and driving ?? No big deal, you were probably polite, showed your ID and sent on your way maybe with a ticket you didn’t like. On the other hand what the police generally encounter are folks who resent the police; they have drug, alcohol, or mental issues, and believe they have the right to verbally abuse, resist, and run from the police. They brandish weapons, physically attack, and resist commands to cease and desist, and sometimes make threatening gestures the causes alarm bells to go off which results in the police drawing their weapons. That split second decision to fire is something no officer wants to be put into, but in most cases their training comes into play. In no department are officers trained to wound, shoot them in the leg as some would say, they are trained to hit critical mass which is in the chest area. Where has the disrespect for police authority come from ?? For all the folks who say the police need better sensitivity training, give me a break. There are some really bad people out there, habitual criminals, who have no respect for the law, you, me, their friends or family, but get sympathy when they are shot. Try walking in an officer’s shoes, try and make life and death decisions daily, suffer the worst kind of verbal abuse, no respect for the badge, and then go home and not let it affect you. Almost all do and have excellent law enforcement careers. There is too much second guessing going on, when we should be taking a hard look at people the police encounter. If there is a fault it is squarely on them and who taught them to show no respect for the law. There are two things I think we all want to avoid in this free society, making a cop angry, and going to jail. What is taught in the home by words or actions I believe is the root cause of all that is happening lately and the police are put up as the scapegoats.

When you see our police officers out and about, say hi, give them a wave or a thumbs up, they deserve your support. We appreciate you !!!

Liberty Under Fire Democrats Angry with “sellout” President!!

“We want to take back our Government!!”

Harold Pease, Ph. D Thank goodness for traditional Democrats with wisdom and experience from a previous trade deal that badly hurt the American worker. They are, for the second time in a generation, opposing their own president for selling them out.

Three weeks ago Democratic lawmakers joined union leaders and hundreds of other Democrats in a rally on Capitol Hill to express their outrage with the request of President Barack Obama, to extend fast-track status to what is called the Trans-Pacific Partnership. All speakers were angry, one referring to the White House, “We don’t trust you.” Rep. Alan Grayson called the Administration a “sellout government,” and suggested that it did not seem to matter “who’s in charge, Democrats or Republicans.” He wanted to “take back our government from the political acrobats and the corporate aristocrats.” The crowd cheered. Still others wanted to know what Obama was hiding in the 27 chapter agreement between the Pacific Rim countries, reportedly only five having anything to do with trade itself, since they were asked to approve fast track-status, basically an up or down vote without changes, and without being able to read it. Senator Elizabeth Warren yelled “No more secret trade deals!” And, “No more special deals for multinational corporations!!” Again, these are Democrats accusing Obama of selling them out.

Traditional Democrats feel that they are watching the same movie as provided by President Bill Clinton when he shoved the over 3,755 page North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) (two volume copy of treaty and supporting documentation in my possession) down their throats, similarly on a fast-track approval process, some twenty-two years ago with precisely the same arguments, that it would expand American jobs. It didn’t!! They were then; as now, overwhelmingly opposed to it, but he was their president so enough supported him to get the deal through. Most democrats with union membership understandably felt betrayed.

The process then and now is the up or down vote without debate and a simple majority vote of both houses of Congress—a process not in the Constitution. Constitutionally the House of Representatives has no treaty-making function. Solely the Senate possesses this power. Clinton, realizing that he could not get a two-thirds vote for treaty confirmation in the Senate as required, purposely used the word agreement rather than treaty, thus treating it as a law, which then required only a simple majority of both houses of Congress for confirmation. He used the same unconstitutional technique on his second major treaty of his two terms in office, GATT—General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.

At present Senators are only allowed to read the 800-page document (probably treaty only without supporting documentation) in a room with signs on the door, “No Public Or Media Beyond This Point.” No private copies are allowed to Senators and they are not to disclose its contents—thus the charge secret agreement. Paul plans to oppose it but his Kentucky counterpart, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, promises to run it through as quickly as possible. We soon will know the position of the remaining presidential contenders. Freedom advocates are advised to reject from further office any member voting for fast-tract consideration or any measure without full disclosure, public vetting, and congressional debate.

Obama seeks the same unconstitutional process for his treaty; presenting it to both houses for a simple majority rather than to the Senate for a two-thirds vote as constitutionally required. If not stopped now this will be the trend for future presidents as well. No member of Congress should participate in this constitutional distortion or ever vote affirmatively on any measure that they have not fully read and been thoroughly vetted with colleagues and the public.

Again, thanks to the Democratic Party faithful that have been bold enough to resist the intrigues of their own president to abandon the American worker and instead to protect him. Hopefully constitutionalist will join them in their efforts. It will take more than party to reclaim our liberties and our jobs.

Even Obama in 2009, seeking union votes in Ohio, described NAFTA as having been devastating to the working class. He claimed in the Bloomberg News that it had cost 1 million American jobs and led to “entire cities” being “devastated.” Yet it is he that now betrays his base support as had Clinton in 1993, the father of NAFTA. Last week Democrats courageously prevented an affirmative vote for the hated fast-tracked secret treaty but enough were swayed by personal phone calls from the President to get committee passage. In the Senate it now goes to the full body.

The Republican base is generally supportive minus the Tea Party contingent. Patriots worry not only over the loss of American jobs that will result, but also about expanded corporate international control of every person on earth (formerly referred to as world government). They also view corporate management of the economy as not the free market and they have problems with the distortions to the Constitution to achieve it. They are also troubled by the secrecy surrounding the whole agreement. Secrecy and liberty are rarely compatible.

Thus far Senator Rand Paul is the only prominent presidential candidate from either major party expressing the belief that the treaty should be made public immediately before
