Maricopa High School Hold 100th Birthday Anniversary Celebration

The city of Maricopa held a 100th Birthday and Anniversary celebration at Maricopa High School on Saturday, June 2nd where more than 500 people, friends and high school alumni turned out for the occasion to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the high school. Classes as far back and 1938 were represented at the huge event which nearly filled the new high school gym.

Jerry.Taft.Independent@gmail.com Responding to a current need in the Taft business community, Wednesday’s Sit’n’Sip at the Chamber offices heard from Bill Holl an architect who is a Certified Access Specialist. A CASp is an individual qualified to inspect and assist business in gaining compliance with both state and federal disabled access laws.

The Federal American with Disabilities Act was adopted in 1992 and requires all buildings to comply with various access laws this includes all existing buildings. There are no grandfathering provisions in this act.

One of the pitfalls business can come across is lack of compliance with current ADA provisions. Most business are unaware of the many traps that could leave them open to lawsuits.

With fines as much as $4,000 plus attorney fees, the costs can mount.

One of the advantages to hiring a CASp according to Holl is the completion of an access inspection and then working with the owner to develop a plan for bringing his business into compliance with current building and ADA codes, This can provide an affirmative defense against lawsuits by showing the business owners compliance or plans for compliance which could lead to the dismissal of the suit.

According to Holl those with historic buildings may be protected in some cases from the required changes by the State’s Historic Building code.

Holl stated another reason to consider an inspection is the development of facts to show that, in some cases, where repairs or upgrades can not be “readily achievable” due to cost or other mitigating factors the business owner can not proceed- with the upgrades.

Oil Museum sets Discovery Days programs The West Kern Oil Museum’s Discovery Days programs for youngsters will feature kite making, the study of Yokuts Indians, life in the oil patch, and blacksmithing.

Volunteer Marlene Mudge organizes and directs the programs with help from the West Side Recreation and Park District, which handles registration.

At Tuesday’s inaugural program youngsters will learn how to make kites.

The July 16 program will feature “Life in the Oil Fields” and include a scavenger hunt in the exhibit buildings and Museum grounds.

Topics are undecided as yet for the July 7 and 14 programs, Mudge said.

“One possibility is a class on drawing program featuring local artist Maggie Blackwell,” she said.

“We’re also looking at doing a program that studies the Yokuts.”

The Yokuts tribe was the Westside area’s first inhabitants. That program will include a video of the Yokuts and Mudge will show youngsters how to make “talking sticks” the tribe used for song and dance.

A date for the blacksmithing program has not as yet been confirmed, Mudge said, but Jacob Hines will show youngsters the lost art of making tools like the pioneers did. Youngsters will get hands-on experience in this program.

The Museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Admission is free.

Yard Sales for Dummies

Reflections of a Yard- Seller

Ah yes! Another day comes to an end ... and as I take down my last “Yard Sale” sign, tally up the day’s earnings and finally set my aching bones to recline, I always reflect on my process of having a sale and how the day went ... In my minds eye I see it as a cast of characters (myself included) exchanging dialog, merchandise and sentiments while passing through each other’s life path.

Yes there’s money involved ... Times are tough, and sadly for some of us a sale can be the only source of income ...so it’s important not to assume that all yard sellers are the same.

Not all of us just want to get rid of our junk to the point of giving it away! We need to keep in mind that the items sold might very well be from a love ones estate. I remember crying when some poor gentleman made me an offer (I knew I couldn’t refuse) on a wrought iron boat. How was this poor guy suppose to know that long ago my father had talked me into buying that boat? All he wanted to do was buy a beautiful boat, and here I left him explaining to his little daughter why I was crying (the big bully)! ... Again sir, so sorry, how’s the boat doing?

4. Greet all customers ... Say hello ... Make sure they know you appreciate them coming.

5. Clean your items before hand ... They will show better and entice people to buy them ... a little spraying, buffing and even painting goes a long way.

For the most part I love yard sales. True for now it’s my only source of income but I enjoy meeting the people that come to them. I also go to sales to see how others do it and buy from them to possibly add some variety to my own. My participation in these events have made me realize a need to suggest some “Yard Sale do’s and don’ts” ... It motivated me to offer up this article of suggestions (based on my personal experiences) in an effort to help us all not step on each other’s toes. Apologies up front to anyone who feels offended by the suggestions ... that is not my intention.

The following is offered as food for thought ... a different perspective ... and to perhaps improve the experience for us all.

Sellers 1. Advertise in The Independent ... Craigslist Bakersfield ... Taft Treasures ... and on signs around town. Marketing in multiple sources will bring customers in from all over !

2. Map out your signs as you put them up, so you can make sure they all come down and are not a forgotten eye sore for the rest of the town to see.

3. Don’t take down someone else’s sign to put your own in its place ... that’s just rude and totally unnecessary ... Taft is full of hard-core-yard sell-buyers that want to see where all the sales are ... as stated before, this is a living for some of us.

6. Machine wash all blankets and clothing ... it’s just the sanitary thing to do ... and items that have been in storage can get bedbugs (it’s been reported to be a problem, so avoid it) 7. Try to start out with at least $20 in one dollar bills for change. A roll of quarters would be good too.

8. Don’t give change for large bills on small items ... buyers should have their own change and there is counterfeit money being passed around the yard sales ... they buy a dollar (or lower) item, give you a counterfeit $20. ... and take your real money as change.

I lost $40. doing this and the bank informed me of the scam. Beware! Hold large bills up to the light and if you don’t see a shadow of the same presidents face to the side, it’s a phony.

9. Try to put the price on all items before the sale. We have some shy people in this town that don’t like having to ask and some of them may not speak your language ...

I find the more items I have priced, the more I sell.

10. When possible, try to have all items on tables ... we have a lot of elderly in this

town, and not all can bend to the floor. I find that a raised piece of plywood works well and has more area to put things on than a table. (cover it with a sheet as a table cloth so no one gets a splinter if they bang into it) 11. If you can, string up a rope from tree to tree or use the closest fence to display your clothing items ... Buyers will quickly see what appeals to them right away, instead of looking at a big blob of material. Be sure to post prices ... I suggest by pants, blouses, dresses, jackets, suits etc.

12. Have an electrical source available to show buyers their electronics are in working condition ... which is something you should have already checked prior to sale.

13. Make sure your DVD, VHS, CD’S work and are rewound. (you don’t want to get a reputation for selling junk).

14. Always say good bye to customers ... even if they rambled through all your stuff and didn’t buy a thing. Like I said, “it’s not just about the money”. Be grateful that they took the time out of their day to stop by ... besides I’ve found out that just word of mouth has been my greatest seller ... and those that might not buy, often bring their friends next time. Smile

6. Buy something ... even if it’s only 25 cents ... it’s the right thing to do and ensures that people will still be willing to put a sale on ...like I said it’s a lot of work. You don’t have to buy something for yourself. When your shopping think of your family members too. I’m surprised at how many children walk away from a quarter toy simply because Mom and Dad didn’t give into their request.

15. Lastly ... but truly most important ... Take down your yard sale signs! 7. If you find something you like but the price is too high for you, make an offer ... what have you got to lose? ... Often times the seller will meet your request or offer you another price. Go ahead don’t be shy ... ask.

8. On the other hand , don’t barter for a lower price on items costing $1.50 or less ... Just because you feel you can get away with something , doesn’t mean you should. Have a heart and always consider the circumstance.

Final note to sellers: In writing this I went to the local Sheriffs Department, The City Hall and all over the internet to be able to quote the Laws about Yard/Garage/Estate sales ... But to no avail, the information at best is very vague. ... The Sheriffs informed me that there has been no citations issued and referred me to the City hall to get the ordinances ... The City Hall had no information on hand but has put in a request for me to get them. They did let me know that the Ordinances may differ between Ford City, Taft City and South Taft. ... And the internet (no matter how you phrase it) sends you to a million different places depending on the words you use. I intend to order the ordinances for Ford city and South Taft at the Bakersfield City Hall and I could only suggest to those interested to do the same. (or come to my yard sale to see if I have them yet).

9. Don’t spit on or scratch at the merchandise ... assume that what you see is what your getting and unless you’ve already bought the item, spitting or scratching is a big no no! Owners are very fussy about spitting on their “Salvador Dali Cookbook” ...(REALLY? Now how did your spit add to the resale value of my book? Gees!)

10. Don’t criticize the merchandise ... You may be telling somebody how awful their deceased husband’s artwork is.

What is the saying? “If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all”. Simply don’t buy it.

11. Watch your children and take into consideration if you break it, you buy it. I want to sell my parents antiques ... But not that way.

2. Don’t just drive by ... get out of the car ... stretch the legs ... be friendly. I have most of my stuff inside the house, so when you just look at my yard, your missing out on that item you might need ... Read the posted signs to understand where the sale really is.

That about sums up my thoughts on the subject of Yard Selling. I hope it was helpful to some if not all. I consider you all a blessing and look forward to seeing you at my next one.

3. Don’t pick the fruit off the trees in the yard ... You have to ask yourself, “How would I feel if someone walked into my house, opened my refrigerator and proceeded to eat my dinner?” As I said before, times are hard and many people ‘can’ what they grow so they’ll have it for later (to eat or sell).

They pay a water bill to make those things grow ... So if you really can’t resist the temptation, pull out a quarter and ask if you can get one for 25 cents.

Why California’s Drought Was Completely Preventable

by Victor Davis Hanson The present four-year California drought is not novel — even if President Barack Obama and California governor Jerry Brown have blamed it on man-made climate change.

The Taft Independent unnecessary in an earlier, much smaller California. But no one denies now that they would have added millions of acrefeet of water for 40 million people.

Lower foothill dams such as the proposed Sites, Los Banos, and Temperance Flat dams in wet years would have banked millions of acre-feet as insurance for dry years. All such reservoirs were also canceled.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, California droughts are both age-old and common. Predictable California dry spells — like those of 1929–34, 1976–77, and 1987–92 — are more likely result from poorly understood but temporary changes in atmospheric pressures and ocean temperatures.

Yet a single 1 million acre-foot reservoir can usually be built as cheaply as a desalinization plant. It requires a fraction of desalinization’s daily energy use, leaves a much smaller carbon footprint, and provides almost 20 times as much water.

California could have built perhaps 40–50 such subsidiary reservoirs for the projected $68 billion cost of the proposed high-speed rail project.

What is new is that the state has never had 40 million residents during a drought — well over 10 million more than during the last dry spell in the early 1990s. Much of the growth is due to massive and recent immigration.

No one knows the exact figures on how many million acrefeet of water have been sent to the ocean since the beginning of the drought.

A record one in four current Californians was not born in the United States, according to the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California. Whatever one’s view on immigration, it is ironic to encourage millions of newcomers to settle in the state without first making commensurately liberal investments for them in water supplies and infrastructure.

Sharp rises in population still would not have mattered much had state authorities just followed their forbearers’ advice to continually increase water storage.

Environmentalists counter that existing dams and reservoirs have already tapped out the state’s potential to transfer water from the wet areas, where 75 percent of the snow and rain fall, to the dry regions, where 75 percent of the population prefers to reside.

But that analysis is incomplete.

After the initial phases of the federal Central Valley Project and state California Water Project were largely finished — and flooding was no longer considered a dire threat in Northern California — environmentalists in the last 40 years canceled most of the major second- and third-stage storage projects. To take a few examples, they stopped the raising of Shasta Dam, the construction of the Peripheral Canal, and gargantuan projects such as the Ah Pah and Dos Rios reservoirs.

Those were certainly massive, disruptive, and controversial projects with plenty of downsides — and once considered

Agriculture is blamed for supposedly using 80 percent of California’s storage water and providing less than 5 percent of the state’s GDP in return. But farming actually uses only about 40 percent of the state’s currently available water.

Agriculture’s contribution to the state’s GDP cannot be calibrated just by the sale value of its crops, but more accurately by thousands of subsidiary and spin-off industries such as fuel, machinery, food markets and restaurants that depend on the state’s safe, reliable and relatively inexpensive food.

The recent rise of Silicon Valley has brought in more billions of dollars in revenue than century-old farming, but so far, no one has discovered how to eat a Facebook page or drink a Google search.

A final irony is that the beneficiaries of these man-made canals and dams neither allowed more water storage for others nor are willing to divert their own privileged water transfers to facilitate their own dreams of fish restoration. Nature may soon get back to normal — but will California?
