The Fort Preservation Society is a nonprofit organization depending on memberships, donations, and events to maintain and preserve the structure and grounds. Things change in Taft

By William R. Taft Popeyes Chicken did not get a very good start here in Taft.

Luckily, they know some mistakes were made and they have fixed them. They have a new Manager and Staff and have fixed the problems. Stop by and check out Popeyes.

Make sure you try the Sweet Tea. Ten plus years ago when they started up the Arenacross Races at Franklin Field the place was packed. These days Arenacross is still going strong and still is a blast to watch but the crowd is smaller. The next Summer Series Race is next Saturday, June 13th, in the Franklin Field Arena.

Races start at 6pm and admission is only $5. They also have food and drinks. If you have a motorcycle maybe racing is your calling. Bring all your family and friends out for a great time.

The Kern County Raceway is going through the same thing. It was crazy packed when it opened but the crowd has gotten smaller. They still have a large crowd but it should be bigger. There are lots of things going on Saturday Nights but drive out for a good time. Races start at 7pm this Saturday.

Cruising was the thing to do on the weekends on Center Street back in the day. Vandalism, fighting, alcohol, and high gas prices stopped cruising. The Taft Chamber started 1st Friday Cruise Nights, I believe in 2012. They also included the stores and restaurants on Center Street.

Several Cruise Nights have included bands and beer gardens. Having bands, fencing off areas, and getting people to help out can get expensive and be a lot of work.

Some of the businesses have played 50’s music. There have been some great bands at Dusty and Paul’s Shop across from the Driller. The next 1st Friday Cruise Night is this Friday. The weather is nice, there will be lots of beautiful and not so beautiful cars out, several shops will be open late for shopping, Black Gold Brewery will be several their new menu and have a huge selection of adult beverages, Asian Experience will have Sushi, The Fox Theatre will be showing Spy and 2 other great movies, Pizza Factory will be tossing their amazing pizza, Mi Casita will be serving their famous tacos, Ong’s Café will be serving their great Orange Chicken, Personal Style has a huge clothing selection, several people will be hanging out in the 5th Street Plaza, and A Hint of Class will be serving the best treats in Kern County.

The Friday Night Lights will be on in a few months at Martin Memorial Stadium. Taft is a Football Town. No matter how you feel about the all suspicious changes at Taft High the last few years, we have to support our kids.

For years there was the Kittens, Bobcats, and Wildcats.

Now every team is the Wildcats. You use to have to work your way up to be a Wildcat. No matter what, we have to support our Cats, being a Wildcat or Bobcat is the least of Taft High’s worries.

Taft had a great Fireworks Show for years at Franklin Field, then the Taft High Baseball Fields but we lost it.

Luckily, 3 years ago the Taft Chamber brought it back and it has never been better. This year the Fireworks Show will be on Friday July 3rd on Rails to Trails. If you have not made a donation for the show stop by the Taft Chamber.

Center Street was amazing back in the day but disappeared in the late 90’s. It is back and is getting better every day. Several business owners are working hard to improve Taft. We have to Shop Taft to keep things moving forward.

We all love the old Taft Days but we need to love the Taft we have today, and Taft in the future. Step up and support what we have- our events, our shops, our restaurants, our schools, our Chamber, our City, our Police Department, our Rec, our neighbors, our TAFT. Let’s keep what we have!

Double Divisional Weekend with Time Trials an added feature! June 6th and 7th

Buttonwillow, CA-June 1, 2015 – The California Sports Car Club will be hosting a Double Divisional and Time Trials weekend, Saturday June 6th and Sunday June 7th, as the last event before the traditional summer break at Buttonwillow Raceway Park. There will be 5 different races both Saturday and Sunday plus Time Trials for those who want to try their street cars on the big track.

The Time Trials program provides drivers the opportunity to gain valuable seat time in a non-wheel to wheel format with three 20 minute sessions each day as well as station wagon sessions with instructors. So bring your street car and a helmet to join in the fun. You must be a Cal Club/SCCA member but weekend memberships are available for $15.

Family friendly Buttonwillow Raceway Park has many amenities, grassy picnic and play areas for families and spectators, three story race control building containing a gift shop, restaurant with indoor seating and viewing area on the second story. Spectators are always welcome. This should be a great spectator event and a very special road racing weekend for the Central Valley.

Cal Club is a region of the Sports Car Club of America, the builder of Buttonwillow Raceway Park located adjacent to Interstate 5 in Buttonwillow, California, a few miles west of Bakersfield. The Club in its 65th year has nearly 2,000 members offering competition programs in road racing, solo/autocross, time trials and road rally. The study session was the result of a request for proposal issued by the City in March of this year looking for grant research and writing services.

According to City Manager, Craig Jones, the Stantec proposal was the best of the proposals received by the City.

The proposal showed the broad reach of Stantec with over 15,000 employees across numerous disciplines with office covering most of the United States.

According to Jones one of the strengths of Stantec’s proposal was its willingness to work on grant proposals on a proposal by proposal basis while the current grant writing firm used by the City wanted a monthly contract.

As part of the proposal Stantec representative, Meredith Noble made it clear that her company did not receive any of the proceeds from grants they write but are compensated for their cost for work done on each individual grant. “We don’t make a profit off the grant proposals.” Nobel stated.

Councilmember Hill Calls on Council to hold Workshops Jerry Livingston J.D. Jerry.Taft.Independent@gmail.com While giving her comments at Tuesday nights council meeting Councilmember Renee Hill requested a workshop to explore ways for the City to diversify its sales tax intake.

“We can’t depend on the MCCF for our only major income source” Hill stated.

Drawing on her experience living in the Temecula area she highlighted that community’s success by their emphasis of there downtown.

Hill said that among the concerns she thought needed to be addressed are directional signs and street monuments that would direct traffic to appropriate locations within the community. The City needs to capitalize on existing attractions such as The Fort, the oil museum and the oil workers monument while looking for other opportunities.

Hill also suggested that discussions about appropriate facades should be on the list of things to cover.

Hill said that while she thought it was important to cover the downtown the city should look at its other land zoned for business and make sure that the City’s zoning would encourage business

For 91-year-old Pauline Thornton the secret to life is staying active, and she does that by volunteering.

She should know. She’s been contributing her time to doing things for others much of her life.

Thornton is the initial Volunteer of the Month at the West Kern Oil Museum, where she has been a volunteer for the last 13 years – ever since the town’s only hospital closed.

She was the first hospice volunteer in Taft (1990) and contributed 22,000 hours at the West Side District Hospital where she worked in the gift shop and emergency room.

“I helped close the hospital down,” she said. “I worked seven days a week at the hospital.”

In 2002 she was selected the most outstanding volunteer of all Catholic Health Care hospitals.

At the museum she performs a variety of tasks like preparing items for yard sales, food for special events and, her favorite, doing tours in the “Story of Oil” exhibits.

“I like the tours, and especially like it when they bring the school kids in for tours. I always enjoy spending time with them.”

The worst part of the job?

“We just can’t get the help we need. We need more volunteers because the Museum is a big place and there’s always so much that needs to be done.”

Volunteering, she believes, is a key part of a fulfilling life.

“That’s what keeps you healthy, and it’s important to give back to your community.”

Miller Time

Hi Everyone, Yes, it is the start of yard sale season and the yard sale signs are up on the poles on Kern Street. They are stacking them up. I took down the ones on the stop signs on 6th and 4th Streets. Now we are seeing the bright colored ones, guess folks think that will attract your attention. The big burning question, with all my griping, will these yard sellers come back and take them down ?? Yeah, sure.

I think about these folks making their unreported pocket change tax free, no support of our local newspapers who offer yard sale advertising space, and then the mess they impose on us of having to clean up after them. Sorry, it just bugs me to no end, I’ll try to grin and bear it in future columns.

We recently had the opportunity to travel back east by plane to meet up with a cruise ship that went from Montreal through the Saint Lawrence River to Boston with 5 stops on the way. Very nice cruise; nice to be able to relax and see some sights. We had planned to take a 15 day cruise through the Panama Canal for an anniversary gift to ourselves but it got canceled 6 days before we were schedule to depart. Steering issues; need to have good steering to go through the canal. So, New England/Canada here we came. It was fun, glad we went good weather all the way. My only real gripe on the cruise ship is the cost of wifi, $75 for less than 30 minutes. Every port we went into had free wifi in the terminals, why can’t the cruise ship see this as a service to their passengers rather than as money maker, as most people cruising have a smart phone, tablet, pad, or laptop. It will be a consideration for our next cruise who offers wifi or not.

I really want to talk about the state of travel by airliners.

I have always been fascinated by flying; I was the kid who had about 20 model airplanes hanging from my bedroom ceiling. In the eighties I had the chance to get my single engine pilots license and flew the family Cesena 172 Hawk XP for about 8 years. When I was in the Navy in the sixties, I flew from San Diego to Bakersfield rather than take the bus. It cost twice as much at $36 one way but I got to fly, with a stop at LAX. Ginny and I have flown back east in the past several times on older planes that were comfortable and roomy, with food served and free drinks. Now it is no better than a cattle car. No one dresses up for flying anymore, it is like flying on a Greyhound Bus. Security is awful, the people you see being body scanned or pulled aside, potential terrorists, I don’t think so. I saw an elderly lady on one trip in a wheelchair in Baltimore being hand searched, wow.

The Taft Independent Once you are shoe horned into your seat on the plane, there is just no room, as almost all flights are crammed full of seats and the airlines are flying fewer airplanes. No free food or drinks, but you can get free water or a soda, big deal. It seems the newer planes have smaller windows, and they sit low from your line of sight. Phone use is prohibited, wifi costs are awful as are the cost of an in flight movie.

I opt for the isles seat if I can and try to get as far forward as I can, to get ahead of the engine noise which is pretty excessive; why many people have head phones to help cancel the noise. Don’t think about the cleanliness of the interior of the plane when the plane arrives at the terminal, discharges passengers, and a half hour later you board. Ya really think they wiped everything down, and sanitized the arm rests, service trays, checked the backseat pouches, and the seats in that half hour ?? On the ship, every where you went, there were automatic sanitizer stations on all levels, departing and boarding, and at all the food stations. Never have had my hands so clean for a week’s time in my life. At the airports, nothing, except in the restrooms. I liked it when I got to our destination, but the whole flying experience, pun intended, is for the birds. Can’t wait when we can get teleported like in Star Trek. Beam me up Scottie.

Looks like the hotel is coming along, hopefully they will hit their target date in August. The old Sno White is looking great, anxious for their opening. Through the generosity of Fred Holmes, the Needs Center received some updated new slatted fencing around the center.

Thanks Holmes family for being good neighbors, generous to our community, and for living in Taft not just residing here. Looking around, folks are doing less watering which is a good thing, but leaving your property with old brown weeds is not a good thing. Make sure you do some clean up and sprucing up, it’s going to get hot and Oildorado is just around the corner. We want to have the community looking good, because we’ll all be happy and having fun in October. Let’s be on our best behavior and be a shining example for why we all live in Taft. Vinny certainly liked it here.

Clinton Foundation fundraising in Sweden as Iran sanctions deliberated at Hillary’s State Department

There are lines of defense being offered. Most of the funds raised on Sweden come from two lotteries that are officially private corporations, but are highly regulated by the Swedish government. In a small country like Sweden with a tight establishment, the idea that these state-sanctioned entities had no understanding of what the national interest was in exports growing is laughable. Sweden must export to sustain its large and sophisticated corporations, and Iran was a promising market, especially because other nations were kept out of the market.

A second line of defense is the familiar “wonderful work the Clinton Foundation does” mantra, meaning purported work in Haiti (though nobody seems to think Haiti is exactly a model of effective philanthropy, what with people still living in tents years after the earthquake) and Africa, and not meaning putting Sidney Blumenthal on the payroll to operate a rogue intell service while promoting his own business.

The Clinton Foundation followed Rahm Emanuel’s adage of never letting a crisis go to waste when Swedish companies faced potential blacklisting over sanctions on doing business with Iran. John Solomon ands Julie Riddell of the Washington Times report: Bill Clinton’s foundation set up a fundraising arm in Sweden that collected $26 million in donations at the same time that country was lobbying Hillary Rodham Clinton’s State Department to forgo sanctions that threatened its thriving business with Iran, according to interviews and documents obtained by The Washington Times.

The Swedish entity, called the William J. Clinton Foundation Insamlingsstiftelse, was never disclosed to or cleared by State Department ethics officials, even though one of its largest sources of donations was a Swedish government-sanctioned lottery.

As the money flowed to the foundation from Sweden, Mrs. Clinton’s team in Washington declined to blacklist any Swedish firms despite warnings from career officials at the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm that Sweden was growing its economic ties with Iran and potentially undercutting Western efforts to end Tehran’s rogue nuclear program, diplomatic cables show.

This looks exactly like a shakedown racket. And it was not the foundation alone that profited enormously: Mr. Clinton personally pocketed a record $750,000 speech fee from Ericsson, one of the firms at the center of the sanctions debate.

And the timing is very suspicious: [Ericsson paid] the former president a record $750,000 for a speech in Hong Kong in November 2011, just weeks after Mrs. Clinton released the first sanctions list that excluded Ericsson and other Swedish firms.

Other remarkable coincidences in timing: After the U.S. announced its sanctions list in 2011 and 2012 — which included no Swedish companies — the Clinton Foundation Insamlingsstiftelse saw an uptick in its fundraising, from about $3 million in 2011 to $9 million in 2012 to $14 million in 2013, according to data released by the Swedish Svensk Insamlings Kontroll.

The foundation is not exactly throwing open its records on the matter: The foundation, however, declined repeated requests to identify the names of the specific donors that passed through the Swedish arm.

A spokesman for Mrs. Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign offered no comment or explanation despite two weeks of requests.

At issue was an expansion of sanctions, as Swedish companies, most particularly Volvo and Ericsson, were expanding their exports.

The U.S. is allowed to penalize foreign firms — even if they are incorporated in countries that are U.S. allies -- under the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA). Beginning in 2010, the Obama administration stepped up U.S. efforts to use ISA authorities to discourage investment in Iran and to impose sanctions on companies that insisted on continuing their business with Iran, according to a Congressional Research Service (CRS) report.

The State Department is required to report to Congress on ISA matters, which should be done every six months. The State report typically covers U.S. diplomatic concerns over which companies and countries may be interfering with U.S. policy by continuing their investments in Iran — much like the concerns that were coming out of Stockholm.

However, the State Department was slow in delivering its reports to Congress and placing them in the Federal Register as required by Section 5e of the ISA, which drew the concern of lawmakers that State wasn’t moving fast enough on making its sanction recommendations prior to the 2011-2012 formal announcements.

In February 2010, Mrs. Clinton testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee that the State Department’s ISA preliminary review was completed in early February and that some of the cases reviewed “deserve more consideration” and were undergoing additional scrutiny.

The preliminary review, according to the testimony, was conducted, in part, through State Department officials’ contacts with their counterpart officials abroad and corporation officials.

That preliminary review hasn’t been made public, and the first likereport was posted to the Federal Registrar in 2012 with no company names specifically mentioned.

In other words, the problem just went away with no public footprints.

Oh, and $26 million went to the foundation and three quarters of a million bucks went into Bill Clinton’s pocket.

Mark Randall Shaler 1962 ~ 2015 Mark Randall Shaler, 53, died in Bakersfield, CA, last month. Mark, a native of Taft, CA, lived in Kern County most of his life. He also spent significant time in Los Angeles, CA, and Seattle, WA. A graduate of Taft Union High School, where he lettered in football and golf, and UCLA, where he majored in psychology, Mark worked as a stockbroker and financial advisor. Although his professional life was based primarily in L.A. or Seattle, his work often took him on the road.

Mark, a lover of Grateful Dead music, UCLA football, L.A. Dodgers baseball, theater, travel, golfing, motorcycling, bicycling, swimming, snorkeling, and “stirring things up,” always kept his heart open to new experiences.

One of those was his rescue of a dog, a Samoyed named Lexy. He flew two thousand miles to retrieve her from an abusive situation, and prided himself on being her “daddy.”

Mark is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Ellen Shaler of Oakland, CA, and a large and loving network of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Dorothy P. Shaler of Taft, CA. As per Mark’s stated wishes, there will not be a formal service. It was his desire that his ashes be scattered in the Caribbean.
