Taft has had some great events lately The Memorial Day Service was great last week. Gary Summers, the Lincoln Jr. High Band, and everyone else did a fantastic job. We forget way too often about all of the great people that have fought for you and I. Our Country is the Best Country in the world because their sacrifices. The cemetery looked beautiful. Flags were placed on the Veterans Graves. It was shocking how many graves had flags on them. God Bless them and the USA. Last Thursday was the West Side Recreation and Park District’s Dance Recital. This was my first year to attend and it was wonderful. It was close to a packed house. All of the dancers did excellent and they should have with great Instructors like Vicky Waugh and Kathy Stacy. I now know Taft has another thing over Bakersfield. I have been to some Dance Recitals in Bakersfield that were not near as good as this one and they charged $17.00 to get in. This Recital was $2 and the money raised all goes to the Rec STOP fund, so it is for a terrific cause. Thank you to Mrs. Vicky, Mrs. Kathy, and the kids for a great show.

Saturday was the Taft Chamber’s Rails to Trails Car Show. Last year was so HOT some missed it but this year the weather was nice and the crowd was huge.

The Car Show was excellent this year. There were several amazing Bikes and Hot Rods. Kathy Orrin and Shannon Jones as always did a great job. People from all over came for the show and it also got all of us Taftians out.

The main event from last week was the Petroleum Industry Appreciation and Educational Event at the Fort.

It was run by our Mayor Paul Linder. Supervisor David Couch came out and spoke in support of our Oil. Every speaker did an excellent job. Fred Holmes and Les Clark Jr. spoke about the facts and how much the USA needs oil. Ed Rodriguez spoke as an oil worker and representing the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce saying they support all of everyone’s efforts.

Another speaker that I did not catch his name spoke about how much we need oil and not all of these restrictions. He said the Oil Industry affects everyone and with all the beautiful homes and new cars being sold every Realtor and Car Salesman should be here in support tonight. He said he is now retired from the Railroad but he understands how important oil is to everyone. He is 100% correct. The crowd was large but it seems like people are just going to keep these ridiculous restrictions in place until everyone is out of work in California. Maybe people will start to care when gas is $10 and they are unemployed. We can’t let Les Clark Jr. and others always protect what is right while we stand back, we need to join them.

Margo Arnold spoke about how everyone needs to get involved NOW. We can’t sit back while everything is being taken away. Les Clark the III spoke in support of everyone else. He said he knows the Rec is here because of our oil and knows without it the Rec and most others things on the Westside will probably be gone.

The movie FrackNation played at the Fox Theatre. It is a must see movie. It showed how one man Josh Fox, came up with unproven information about Fracking.

FrackNation showed how everything is either un-

proven or false about Fracking. All these anti-fracking people got on board with Josh Fox and ruined so many people’s lives. It reminded me of how a rumor ruins lives. A rumor spreads and so many people get hurt just like Josh Fox did about fracking. It is way worse though because lives have been ruined because of false info on Fracking. Please support our Oil Industry before California gets ruined and everyone is sitting in Texas or North Dakota loving life.

I thank all of the people that work so hard to put on all these events. The Oil Appreciation Rally was needed and I hope it wakes people up. I thank Southern Sierra General Engineering for having their crane with the beautiful American Flag at the Car Show and the Oil Appreciation Rally. It was great to walk around the Car Show and look up and see it. Support our Oil Workers and Taft because if you don’t the Westside will disappear to Texas for a better Government. Please read the Taft Calendar every week and attend and support all Taft Events. Stay Positive Taft!

California Primary Election Results

by Jerry Livingston California held its 2014 primary elections this Tuesday.

In districts covering the Westside, Republican candidates Jean Fuller (California 16th Senate district) and Kevin McCarthy (23rd Congressional district) ran unopposed while Shannon Grove will face off against Democrat Virginia “Mari” Goodman in the 34th Assembly district. Grove received 73.41 percent of the vote compared to Goodman’s 26.19.

In County wide elections the only contested race will see Jon Lifquist who received (43.87 %) of the vote face off against Russell Johnson (39.80 %) in the fall. In other county wide elections Mary Bedard (Auditor and Controller), Lisa Green (District Attorney), Donny Youngblood (Sheriff-CoronerPublic Administrator), Jordan Kauffman (Treasurer-Tax Collector) and Christine Frazier (Superintendent of Schools) all unopposed.

Zack Scrivner, Supervisorial District 2 and William Maggard, Supervisorial District 3, ran unopposed as well.

In state wide elections moderate Republican Neel Kashkari (19.1 %) edged pass Tea Party candidate Tim Donnelly (14.8 %) to win the right to face Democratic Governor Jerry Brown (54.4 %) in the fall. The Lieutenant Governors race will have current Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), who took 49.9 % of the vote, against Ron Nerhing (23.2 %). In the Attorney General’s race it appears that Democrat incumbent Kamala Harris (53.0 %) will likely face Republican Ronald Gold (12.7%) but with a difference of less than two percent between Gold and another Republican Phil Wyman (11.5 %) the Secretary of State is waiting for all election officials in the state to finish canvassing the vote and submit their final numbers to declare a victor.

In a close race Secretary of Sate candidate Democrat Alex Padilla (30.1 %) will face Republican Pete Peterson (29.7

%). In the race for Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson (D) with 46.9 percent of the vote will run against Marshall Tuck (R) who captured 28.7 percent of the vote. Dave Jones (D) will face Ted Gains (R) for Insurance Commissioner. In the race for Controller Ashley Swearengin (R) received 24.4 percent of the vote and is waiting to hear whether Democrats John Perez (21.7 %), Betty Yee (21.5 %) or Republican David Evans (21.6 %) will be her opponent in the fall. Finally, John Chiang (D) will oppose Greg Conlon (R) in the race for Treasurer.

This was the first election in which the top two vote getters in elections for statewide, Congressional and Sate Legislative offices regardless of party were to face off against each other in the fall.

Voter turn out for this election was the lowest turn out in state history with only 18.4 percent of eligible voters showing up at the polls, Kern county’s turn out was 16.3 percent with only Los Angeles county (13.1 %) and San Bernardino county (14.8 %) recording lower percentages of voter turn out.

The City Council adopted a resolution Tuesday calling for council elections on November 4, 2014. The nomination period will be from July 14, 2014 through 5:00 p.m. on August 8, 2014 for three council members.

Should any current member of the council choose not to run, the nomination period will be extended to August 13, 2014 at 5:00 p.m., for that specific seat.

Three council members have terms that will expire on December 31, 2014, Mayor Paul Linder, Council Member Randy Miller and Council Member Ron Waldrop.

time to test 10 Juniors and Seniors from the program. Students had the option of testing using the SMAW process with E7018 or FCAW-GS welding process two of the most widely used welding processes locally. Welder performance qualification tests qualify a welder to weld using a given welding process and wire or electrode, in a given position(s), on a range of thicknesses of plate and/or pipe depending on the test given. Passing a Welding Performance Qualification Test requires that the welds must conform to a rigorous set of industry standards. All tests are comprised of several visual inspections of the welders work as well as destructive testing of the welded test coupon. Prior to hiring a welder most companies require welders to pass a welding performance test administered by that company. Of the ten students that tested six passed visual inspection of their welds and two ( Josh Hawkins and Justin Studer) passed bend tests of their welds. Very few high school students in the state are able to demonstrate this level of welding skills.

Los Padres Observes National Trails Day Los Padres National Forest is observing National Trails Day with two volunteer community trail projects Saturday, June 7. This marks the 22nd year Los Padres has helped organize trail projects in conjunction with National Trails Day. On the Santa Barbara Ranger District, volunteers are invited to assist with clearing the trail corridor and repairing water control features on the Jesusita Trail. Members of the public interested in participating should meet at Stevens Park at 8:30 AM. Volunteers are encouraged to bring water, sunscreen, snacks, gloves and a bicycle helmet, and to wear closed-toe shoes or boots and long pants.

Water, tools, instruction, and a limited number of work helmets and gloves will be provided on site.

The Jesusita Trail project is organized by local trail advocacy groups in partnership with the City and County of Santa Barbara.

The event is sponsored by Los Padres Forest Association, the Montecito Trails Foundation, the Santa Barbara County Trails Council, the Multi-Use Trails Coalition, the Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers, REI and the Santa Barbara Chicken Ranch, which will again provide lunch at Stevens Park from 2-3 PM. The Ojai Ranger District will also be hosting a volunteer project June 7 on the Howard Creek Trail. This project will primarily consist of trail brushing and clearing, and require hiking between three to five-and-a-half miles. If you are interested in taking part in this project, meet at the Ojai Ranger Station by 8:30 AM to carpool to the trailhead. The work will conclude by 3:30 PM. Volunteers should bring a lunch, water, sunscreen, gloves, eye protection, a hat, and sturdy footwear. Tools, instruction, and drinks will be provided. The Ojai Ranger Station is located at 1190 E. Volunteers under the age of 18 are welcome to participate, but must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Both events are great opportunities to meet other outdoor enthusiasts and make a positive impact.

“Volunteers are the backbone of our efforts to maintain trails,” said Los Padres Assistant Recreation Officer Jeff Bensen. “The trails need work every year to repair damage and cut back brush that impedes accessibility, and in many cases this work wouldn’t get done without the help of the community.”

Liberty Under Fire Branch Davidian Sacred Soil 21 Years Later

By Harold Pease, PH. D We drove down a quiet country road, trees and green meadows in every direction. Mount Carmel, the famous Branch Davidian Compound, was a sharp turn to the right. Gone was the mailbox at the entrance with Branch Davidian Church clearly written on it in big black letters where the once 100-plus residents of a devout break-off of the Seventh-day Adventist Church received their preferred mail.

Once on the grounds, we were met with two simple memorials each telling us that something very significant and violent had happened here; one to the four ATF agents killed in the February 28, government raid. A few feet away was a shrine of sorts with a name on a plague for each of the 76 Davidians (19 men, 34 women, 23 children) who lost their lives in the fiery furnace in their place of residence 21 years ago, April 19, 1993. Sympathetic visitors had left money on one of the shrines.

A gravel road, less than a fourth of a mile long, lay in front with a couple of buildings to the right. The second was the home of the only actual Branch Davidian a part of the group now available, disaffected at the time of the raid, but now the minister of the sect now renamed The Branch. The road wound down curving to the left and ending in front of a newly built chapel placed on the exact same corner as once stood the chapel part of the Branch Davidian structure; the double entrance door precisely placed where the original double doors once were. Davidians argued that bullet holes in them came from outside and ATF agents that they came from inside.

This would prove the origins of the assault, but the doors have disappeared. The famous structure was gone but cement remnants of a foundation were still clearly visible.

It was hard to imagine Abram tanks encircling the building running over trikes and bikes of the children destroying all in their path where now a freshly planted garden exists. Is this the place where military helicopters at one

time sprayed bullets into it? Dick De Guerin, David Koresh’s lawyer, who spent 30 hours in the compound during the 51-day seize, told Dianne Sawyer of ABC News, of bullet holes in the ceiling—one presumably wounding David Koresh himself (Harold Pease, The Waco Massacre: We Did It For The Children, video, 1994) Was this really the site of loud music being played at night, presumably to frighten the residents, sometimes accompanied with sounds of squealing rabbits being slaughtered? Most chilling was probably Nancy Sinatra’s song, “These boots are made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do. One of these days, these boots will walk all over you.” And, “You keep playin’ where you shouldn’t be playin,’ and you keep thinkin’ that you’ll never get burnt. Ah, I’ve just got me a brand new box of matches, yeah and “ what he knows you ain’t had time to learn.” Really!?!

A Congressional investigation identified incendiary devices on the property suggesting that the government, not the Davidians, as the government and managed media asserted, started the fire. With winds blowing through the structure all life was destroyed within 20 minutes, including the little children, yet today only Branch Davidians have served jail sentences (Waco: Rules of Engagement, Congressional Investigation, video, 1997).

A humble Branch member, obviously serving a caretaker roll over the property, told me of agents returning to the scene to ask for forgiveness, the most recent just two months ago. The agent admitted to having assisted the snipers with a telescope. There will be others.

Video coverage shows tanks with mounted flags attacking its own citizens also flying a U.S. flag on their building. How is this possible? We also see Helicopters with mounted machine guns and the use of Delta Force personnel on the property. How can anyone believe that this happened in America in direct violation of the Posse Comitatus Act forbidding the military any function in law enforcement? Yet the evidence is overwhelming that it did, in this now quiet, serene, and beautifully meadowed environment with birds chirping the sounds of peace? This is indeed sacred soil.

Was this really the place where deadly CS gas was pumped into the complex for two hours? The vast majority breathing the poisonous gas were mothers and children. It hardly seemed possible. Now birds chirp away and the grassy meadow gives the place exquisite serenity.

Is this the place where FBI snipers were shooting Branch Davidians as they tried to escape a certain fiery death, presumably to burn and erase all evidence of their blunderous, even unlawful, conduct, as alleged? In the dinning room of the Davidian complex at least 17 bodies had bullet holes in them. Subsequently empty cartridge shells have been found in one of the three-sniper positions now known to exist in the back of the complex. Is this the place where many of the children were taken into the church’s cement record vault room (referred to as the bunker) to escape the fire, which new evidence reveals was penetrated from above by a military explosive device, probably immediately killing the mothers and children huddled together inside (Video, “Waco: A New Revelation,” 2011)?
