West Kern Oil Museum Expansion

The Heat is on in Taft After several years without Men’s Fast Pitch Softball it is back. Fast Pitch Softball was very popular in Taft from way before my time until the 80’s. The Taft Buzzards recently started playing and as expected they are a great team and have already won a Tournament that earned them a State Birth. Some of the Buzzards are John Ryan, Rob Davis, Sean Yaws, Ron Mizner, Dan Willingham, Matt Downey, Alan Miller, Austin Kindred, Luke Shelby, Sam Veach, Buddy Owens, Matt Davis, and several other great players.

It is terrific to have this back in Taft but the tough part for the Buzzards is that it is very expensive. If you or your business is interested in being a sponsor for the Buzzards please contact any of the outstanding players. Keep your eyes and ears open because you will hear lots more about this talented team in the future.

It is wonderful seeing old things return to Taft. Slow Pitch Softball is popular once again at Franklin Field. There are several Bowling Leagues at the Rec Bowling Lanes. When I was a kid everyone loved playing Whiffle Ball and now everyone no matter the age can play at Oil Field. Who doesn’t love a BBQ at the park and Taft has some great parks to BBQ at. Racing is back in Kern County and luckily it is only 20 minutes away at the Kern County Raceway. If you remember, probably 7 years back or so Tuesday Night was bargain night at the Taft Fox Theatre. Tuesdays are now Family Night at the Fox, with only $5.00 admission and a Concession Special each week.

More good news, the Verizon Wireless is now open next to Pizza Hut. Some kind of Yogurt Shop has signs on Kern Street just down from Jo’s Restaurant but it is unsure when it will open. Rumors are an Ice Cream parlor is going in one side of the old 332 Club. A new store will be open soon in Jack Jarvis’ old building on the corner of Center and 3rd Street.

I remember as a kid when the new Lucky’s Shopping Center pretty much closed down the Safeway Shopping Center when it opened. I remember how K Mart put the nail in the coffin to downtown Taft and my favorite store Taft Sporting Goods. I also remember the new great homes being built west of Church Street. Lots of ups and downs here in Taft.

I now realize how much K Mart is needed here and Downtown Taft is coming back. The Safeway Shopping Center still has not recovered.

So many projects are in motion right now in Taft and will start any day. Not everyone is happy about these projects, mainly the Hotel in the middle of town. The reason it is going there is to get people to get out in Taft, not just stop along the highway and leave the next morning. I would imagine most of the hotel guests would be here for oilfield jobs, weddings, reunions, and Taft Events. Hopefully this will also bring people that would not stay in our current motels, bring more people to Skydive Taft, The West Kern Oil Museum, The West Side Rec sports and events, and mainly to shop and eat in Taft. This Hotel location will hopefully send people to dinner at Pizza Factory then a movie at the Fox. On their walk there they will notice Dave’s Glass Shop and maybe get that annoying little chip in their windshield fixed there the next day before they leave. Maybe they will get forms made here before leaving at S & S Printing, get an Oil Change at Taft A-1 Lube, get the wife a gift at a Hint of Class, get a haircut at Razors Edge, get a watch at Acme Jewelry, and take the family home cupcakes from Get your Sweet On. These are just a few reasons this Hotel is huge for Taft.

Speaking of Taft being great, a big Thank you to everyone that made the 4th of July Fireworks Show excellent. This show was free because so many great people and businesses stepped up and made it free. Stay Positive Taft.

West Kern Oil Museum is getting a boost from two of its Benefactors.

Dr. G. Barton Heuler and his wife, Margaret, grew up on the Westside, met while attending Taft Junior College, and have a fondness for the town’s No. 1 tourist attraction.

The Heulers, who live in Anaheim Hills and have been successful growing pistachios, almonds and other crops, have donated money to help the Museum pay its bills each month and for restoring the iconic 1937 fire truck and a recently donated 1918 Model T Ford pickup.

Now they’ve thrown down the gauntlet in an effort to raise funds for an ambitious expansion project rolled out by the Museum’s board of directors.

“Dr. Heuler and his wife Margaret are offering matching donations up to a total of $25,000 for donations from anyone,” said Board President Rick Woodson. “It could be one dollar or many dollars, and they will match it – up to $25,000.”

He said donations are encouraged from individuals, service and fraternal organizations, businesses and corporations.

“We will accept contributions from anyone and everyone and the Heulers will match it.”

Museum directors have mapped out a growth plan that includes a new garage for their antique cars and trucks and service station and auto parts exhibits.

Also envisioned are a new gift shop, improved perimeter fencing and parking, a more appealing entryway, a vintage machine shop and pole barns to protect antique equipment and displays.

A 1950s era drilling rig donated by Fred and Barbara Holmes is being restored and soon will be erected on Museum grounds.

Maintenance projects and upgrades to facilities also have been undertaken.

The Museum gets its operating income primarily from memberships and an annual yard sale.

Dr. Heuler was born on the CWOD oil camp in Fellows (his father was the town doctor), attended Midway School, Taft High and Taft JC before earning four degrees from the University of Southern California, including a doctor of dentistry.

He was a practicing dentist for a decade before turning to almond farming in Kern County.

The Heulers now have farming interests in Kern County, Southern California and Arizona that include pistachio and almond orchards, vineyards and row crops.

She was Margaret McCormick before they married 56 years ago.

Dr. Heuler also has been successful in the investment world and is working with a committee of the Museum board to develop a business plan.

The museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10-4 and 1-4 on Sunday. Admission is free.

Miller Time

Hi Everyone, Oildorado is in the air once again.

Won’t be long when October of 2015 will roll around and we’ll have another 10 days of festivities second only to the Kern County Fair. The Executive Board of Oildorado has been meeting the past few months working on hammering out some of the basic details that need to be in place before the celebration begins. The 2010 celebration was a bigger than life event for Taft and was one for the record books as Oildorado’s go. Pres. Paul Linder has been working hard with his exec team of Billy White, Shannon Jones, Eric Cooper, Glenn Black, Dennis McCall, Rusty Risi, and our perennial favorite historian Pete Gianopolus to present a grand show. I have been privileged to be on the executive board since 1980 filling different roles. We just met this week and are planning to get with the 18 member general board of directors soon, trying to set up a convenient date, time, and place. We know there are a lot of folks out there chomping at the bit to want to be involved and after we get the preliminary work done, they will be. Besides all the normal events we are entertaining ideas for something unusual, different, and exciting but related to oil and Taft. We are looking for ideas for a theme and names for a grand marshal for our grand parade. If you know any of these board members, let them know your thoughts.

Lots of news lately that is affecting our nation but none so much as the flow of folks pouring over our border from the south. With all the conflicting rationale, laws, rules of engagement, who goes back, who stays, the one that really bothers me the most is automatic citizenship to anyone born here although their parents are not legal citizens of the United States. If a pregnant woman sneaks across the border and gives birth here, by the way usually on the taxpayer dime, her child is a citizen even though the birth mother is not and may not ever be. How can that be ?? Do other countries have this rule ?? If an American citizen gives birth in another country is that automatic dual citizenship for that American child of American parents ?? Most likely not. I understand Mexico does not allow that to happen. I don’t have all the answers for those that are here or trying to come here, but running the gauntlet of crossing over our border, avoiding capture by Border Patrol, getting beyond the border states, does that mean they are home free and are deserving of the benefits that our naturalized citizens have earned ?? Drivers licenses, voting rights, Social Security Benefits, food stamps, housing allowances, college educations etc, etc, and on and on ?? Just doesn’t seem right. The politics involved is just awful no matter what political persuasion you are drawn to; common sense has gone right out the window with a whole bunch of our tax dollars thrown at a problem that could be eased if we sealed our borders to stop the flow. We’d be better off helping Mexico stop the illegal crossings at their own southern border.

As an example, the crisis in Syria where millions of people have fled their country to cross into neighboring countries but they are stopped and put in large camps.

They are not allowed to roam freely around the host country and are dependent on nations of the world for shelter, food, and basic humanitarian needs. We catch and process our border crossers, ID them, etc, and then let them go with a promise to show up at a immigration hearing a couple of weeks later, and do they show for their hearings, a resounding no. No camps here. Now the government is asking for billions to house these children that have wound up on our shore and for more judges and lawyers to do the processing. No mention of money for more patrol folks; no more money for fences or surveillance; no troops, no turning the crossers away at the border. When we tell people, by our unintended actions, that if they can make it to here, we’ll take care of them like they have never seen before. They will ride trains, dodge drug cartels and thugs, risk rape, torture, and even death; they’ll walk into the hot desert to get that prize. Wouldn’t you if you could get away from a country that doesn’t care about or take care of you ?? How this will play out, we don’t know yet, but it is going to cost each and every one of us a bundle to solve this problem.

We broke ground on our hotel last week to be located at 6th and Main Street. Grading permits have already been granted so more dirt should be moving soon. The owners are really excited to be here as are the folks that are going to build the Taco Bell. They have a vision and their vision has crossed the line of the City’s vision, and progress and a brighter future lie just around the corner. Look for announcements for a RV Park and a new restaurant and another convenience store. Major retail chains are giving Taft another look because of the commitments that have been made and the new housing potential on Hillard Street that will be breaking ground soon.

While we support these efforts, you and I have to remember that our current local businesses deserve your patronage as they have been with us through thick and thin and support our community in many ways. Live here, don’t just reside here; support Taft.

West Side Mosquito District Issues Warning The West Side Mosquito and Vector Control District would like to warn Taft residents of the presence of West Nile Virus in the area. Adult mosquito samples taken from theTaft area have tested positive for the virus. The infected adult mosquitoes were collected from District traps on July 1, 2014. Infected mosquitoes from Taft were collected from the Garratt St. area.

Residents are urged to protect themselves from mosquitoes by limiting outdoor activities after dark. If you must go out at night, be sure to apply a mosquito repellant such as those products that contain DEET or other repellants. Home owners can help prevent mosquitoes by checking their yards for any standing water that may breed mosquitoes. Neglected pools, buckets, barrels, or even flower pots can hold enough water to be used by mosquitoes to rear their young. It is especially important if residents are aware of abandoned houses with pools or leaks with standing water to report the address to the District office (763-3510). There is no charge for us to come out and treat for mosquito breeding.

Most people that contract West Nile Virus never notice any symptoms. Only about 10% of the victims ever have the flu-like symptoms and only about 1% of those require treatment. The aged, very young and those people with compromised immune systems are most susceptible to the disease.

Bar Fight on Center Street Leaves One Dead, One Charged Alcohol Control Board Says No Valid Liquor License Issued for Bar Operation

by Michael Long and Jerry Livingston On Saturday night at approximately 10:30pm, Taft police responded to a report of a fight in front of Buckolie’s Bar at 621 Center Street.

Taft police arrested 24 year old Lyndon Faagau early Sunday Morning for suspicion of murder in the death of 42 year old Billy Joe Burell.

Police found Burell lying in the roadway with a head injury. Burell was transported to Mercy Southwest Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police reported that Burell was involved in a physical altercation in front of the popular Center Steet bar, fell and struck his head on the asphalt roadway, causing his injury.

Faagau was arrested as a suspect in the death.

One witness told the Independent that she had observed Burell and Faagau inside Buckolie’s get into a confrontation and go outside the bar. She later saw Burell laying in the roadway.

In an email to the Taft Independent Sunday, Buckolie’s Bar said that there was no altercation in the bar.

Taft Police Chief Ed Whiting confirmed that the incident was initiated inside of Buckolie’s, located at 612 Center Street in Taft.

Whiting said that a video taken by a witness showed that there were many other witnesses to the incident. Whiting urged witnesses who have not been interviewed by police to contact Taft Police.

“The Taft Police Department is asking if anyone was at Buckolie’s on the night of 7/5/14 and witnessed this incident, you are asked to please contact the Taft Police Department to be interviewed,” read a press release from the Taft Police Department.

“We still have other people to interview,” Whiting said.

“If you were there, please contact the Taft Police Department.”

Whiting said he would not release the video to the media.

At a meeting with local media Monday, Whiting said that homicide suspect Lyndon Faagau had been released from police custody on Sunday and that the investigation into the death of Burell was ongoing.

Whiting said that Faagau is still under investigation in the death of Burell, despite his being released.

“There is no other suspect at this time,” Whiting said.

“The Kern County District Attorney will ultimately make the final charges pending the outcome of the investigation.”

Both Faagau and Burell had criminal records, according to court documents. Faagau was arrested and plead no contest to a hit and run resulting in property damage. Burell was arrested 36 times between 1989 and 2013, and served time

Westside Urgent Care to Expand Hours, Declines Study Proposal by San Joaquin

By Jerry Livingston J.D. The Board of the Westside Health Care District approved the expansion of service hours for Westside Urgent Care to be effective as early as September 1, 2014.

Donna Warnock, the clinics administrator requested the extension of hours of operation as the facility begins its plans to expand to provide occupational medicine services, currently the nearest facilities available to provide these services are in Bakersfield. The expansion will first be used to accommodate the Urgent Care’s flu clinic.

The new hours are 8am to 9pm.

In other actions the Board approved the scheduling of a strategic planning retreat to occur in either August or September were the Board will discuss long range strategic plan for the District as well as receive training on various board and staff legal obligations.

The Board also voted to not accept a proposal made by San Joaquin Health Care to provide a feasibility study for the district at no cost. Concerns were expressed that they needed to better understand the goals of San Joaquin in offering to provide for the study at no cost to the District.

Staff was directed to arrange a follow up meeting between the District and San Joaquin to better understand its goals.

The Board received an update on contract negotiations between the city of Taft and the District for services provided to the Municipal Community Correctional Facility.

The City is currently reviewing the contract and will be responding shortly.

Taft Police responded to a report of gunshots at 229 Warren Street in Taft Wednesday morning and arrested one man in the incident.

Jason Anderson of Taft was arrested for unlawful discharge of a firearm.

Neighbors told the Independent that the man, who they identified as Jason, fired at least 8 gun shots inside his home that morning, and had done so the day before. None of the neighbors said that they saw the individual fire a gun.

After obtaining a search warrent, Taft police conducted a search of the home and confiscated 3 weapons, two pistiols and a rifle. Police also found boxes of ammunition and spent cartridges on the floor of the home, according to Taft Police Chief Ed Whiting.

A witness who identified himself as Dave said that the alleged shooter had pointed his gun at a neighbor the day before the incident.

Contacted by the Independent, the neighbor, who declined to give his name said that the individual had pointed and aimed his handgun at him and made threatening remarks.

Liberty Under Fire Can President Obama Make Law when Congress Chooses not to?

Harold Pease, Ph. D In light of the recent White House Press Secretary’s threat, “We’re not just going to sit around and wait interminably for Congress. We’ve been waiting a year already.” Reportedly, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson has been tasked with finding ways to change immigration law by executive order, thus bypassing Congress. The threat is not idle as President Barack Obama did this once before and promised to do so again in his most recent State of the Union Address.

There is nothing more clear nor basic in the Constitution than the separation of federal power into three branches, one to legislate, another to execute that law, and a third to adjudicate possible violations, when contested, of that law—a division of power held “sacred” until the last few decades. The Constitution reads: “All legislative powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives”(Article I, Sec. I).

The executive branch has NO authority to make law—any law!!!! Executive Orders are constitutional only when they cite a single, recently passed law of Congress, where that law needs a statement of implementation by the executive branch. Originally they were but interdepartmental directives.

For years some in Congress have been working on what is called the Dream Act that would extend amnesty and place illegal immigrants on a course toward full citizenship. Lacking popularity, twice it has failed to get the majority vote of both Houses of Congress required by the Constitution (once, between 2008-2010, when the President’s party controlled everything except the Judicial branch), thus leaving existing immigration law unchanged. A president can only suggest a need for new law in his State of the Union Address, and either sign or veto a law passed by Congress, which then, if vetoed, must be overridden by a vote of 2/3rds of both houses to become law. That is it.
