Happy Independence Day There is lots of planning going on now for Oildorado 2015. Oildorado is October 9th- 18th.

Everyone is wondering who will be the Grand Marshall, who will fill Eddie Money’s shoes at the Concert, who will host the big dance, will the War Planes come back, will there be hot air balloons, and so many other questions. The Oildorado Schedule will be announced in October of 2014. People are already trying to plan Reunions, BBQ’s, Dances, and much more. Churches, clubs, schools, and everyone else check with each other so similar events will not be planned at the same time. The good thing about Oildorado is there is so much going on you can’t do it all. Stay up to date on “Oildorado 2015” on Facebook. Post pictures, tell Oildorado stories, and much more on “Oildorado 2015.”

God Bless the USA! I hope you attended Unity Thrift’s Paws in the Park last weekend, it was a great time. I was so impressed with what these dogs did. Make sure you attend next year. Later that day was the movie “Monsters University” at Rails to Trails. If you weren’t at the Pismo Car Show you were probably there. It was great. Thank you to the Westside Rec, Supervisor David Couch, and the City of Taft for putting on this very nice free family event. Make sure you go to the next free movie at A Street Park on August 2nd at 8:15. “Goonies” will be playing so get there early.

If you remember the song from the 80’s- “The Freaks came out at night,” it’s true, especially in the summer. Keep your car and home doors locked and keep your outside lights on. Remember this is our amazing town but to keep it amazing we need to keep an eye out for each other. If you see or hear something call the Police and report it. If you’re driving down Center Street and see something that is not right call and report it. If you do not want to get involved or are afraid of retaliation tell them you do not what to be contacted or involved. Remember just because something is not right it may not be a crime. If you’re unhappy with any contact with Law Enforcement call them for further explanation before blasting it on Social Media. Happy Fourth of July!!

McCarthy Takes to the Field, Makes Pitch at Fenway Park

“These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from service to their country, but he that stands it now deserves the love and thanks of man and women. Tyranny, like hell is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us that, the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value.”

Thomas Paine wrote these words in December of 1776 just six months after the Continental Congress had voted to declare our independence from Great Britain.

As we celebrate our country’s 238th birthday this weekend remember Paine’s words and bear in mind those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedoms, giving thanks for their sacrifice while recalling all those who continue to labor on our behalf to guarantee our freedoms.

Of course the day he thought we should celebrate was July 2, 1776 the day that our Founding Fathers voted to assert our nations independence, not the day John Hancock and one other signed the Declaration.

Or it could have been July 8th when t the Liberty Bell rang out from Independence Hall to summon the crowd to hear the first reading of the Declaration in public, lastly how about August 2nd, when most of the delegates signed the declaration?

Most of us learned in school that our second and third presidents Adams and Jefferson both died on July 4th, 1826 but did you know that the fifth president, James Monroe died on the fourth in 1831? President Calvin Coolidge was born on the 4th as was Ulysses S. Grant(?).

Congressman Kevin McCarthy joined young ball players last Sunday in the inaugural McCarthy cup wiffle ball game at the West Side Recreation and Park District’s new Oil Field, a scaled down replica of the Famed Fenway Park in Boston. McCarthy praised the quality of the District’s facilities during his opening remarks declaring them among the best that he had visited. The Congressman then participated in the game, pitching his team to a victory and hitting a home run over the “Green Monster.”

McCarthy was recently elected House Majority Leader by his Republican Party colleges and will assume his new responsibilities on August 1, 2014. His election makes him the fastest rising majority leader in American history.

Ben Franklin was the oldest signatory, He was 70 and Edward Rutledge was the youngest at 26.

Another country that’s big on the holiday is Denmark.

Extensive Danish emigration to the US prompted the launch of celebrations in 1912. Now, a festival at Rebild National Park near Aalborg calls itself the biggest Fourth party outside the US; Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush have visited. Norway and Sweden also celebrate the fourth.

Confederate General, John Pemberton, surrendered to Union forces at Vicksburg, Missippi on July 4, 1863 and the town of Vicksburg refused to celebrate the Fourth of July for the next 81 years.

It became an unpaid federal holiday in 1870. And a lot of trivia sites say that it became a paid holiday in 1941 but it was actually passed by congress in 1938.

The United States got what may be the country’s largest physical birthday present on July 4, 1884, when the French presented it with the Statue of Liberty. It took four months to assemble the 151-foot-tall statue, which was shipped from Paris in hundreds of pieces. Also in 1884 miners in Swan City, Colo., blew up their local post office on Independence Day because the town did not supply them with fireworks.

It was on the 4th in 1939 that Lou Gehrig appeared at Yankee Stadium and gave his retirement speech, calling himself “the luckiest man on earth.”

The Philippines gained full independence from the United States on July 4, 1946?

And on July 4, 2004, the cornerstone was laid for the Freedom Tower in New York City, a building that would rise from the ashes of the World Trade Center.

Taft Chamber Hosts Cruise Night, Huge Fireworks Show Friday Night

This FRIDAY, JULY 4, the Taft Chamber is hosting the Taft Fireworks Spectacular!

The event starts at 6pm and will last until 11pm. Vendors will be on hand selling snow cones, food, and crafts, as well as face painting, balloons, and bounce houses. The Fireworks will begin at 9pm.

There will be live entertainment on the stage at 6th and Main Street all night. Taft Best Western Plus Hotel Breaks Ground on Rails-to-Trails

By Congressman Kevin McCarthy Every year on the Fourth of July we celebrate the freedoms we enjoy as a nation. This year we stand, as we have for many years, as the greatest nation in the world. This power was neither inherited nor given to us; it was originally won when America was merely a loosely allied collection of colonies with no real army and few resources. But the power of the idea of freedom was so strong that we overcame the world’s greatest army and most powerful nation at the time.

Since that day, we declared our independence as colonies and became a nation. As a nation, we expanded to encompass one end of our continent to the other. We stood for freedoms within our borders and outside of our borders and when the world saw that people could be free, the world itself began to adopt freedom.

The freedoms that we enjoy in our everyday lives and that we celebrate in communities throughout the country on July 4th were borne from our nation’s independence and proclaimed by a single document. This document declared that the people have the freedom to practice their faith, to speak and share different ideas, and freedom to organize their government the way they choose. It said that when government is not bound to the people, it is no longer legitimate or just.

The long awaited ground breaking ceremony for the new Taft Best Western Hotel was held Monday morning. Members of the Taft City Council, Supervisor David Couch, city staff and more that 50 guests were on hand for the event. Construction will begin in July.

The ceremony had been delayed by several months by the hotel developers until all approvals had been secured from the city. Final approval was recently given by city planners and the city council for the 3 story 70 room structure located on the Rails-to-Trails property located on the corner of 6th and Main Streets.

Construction will take approximately 7 to 10 months according to spokesperson Laura Geiger, just in time for Taft Oildorado in October 2015.

Rails-to-Trails developer Geary Coates told the Independent that a 52 space recreational vehicle park will be built in September on the Rails-to-Trails at the former Sunset Antique store property on Supply Row and 2nd Street.

Liberty Under Fire Liberty and Tyranny Symbols Side by Side— in America Harold Pease, Ph. D I awoke on a Sunday morning where I was visiting, a ray of light coming through the window. The window view showed side-by-side symbols; one of liberty, as represented by a small community of multi-colored and multi-shaped living structures with residents going about their business oblivious to the second symbol, represented by large, grey, ugly, windowless government buildings spying on and recording everyone’s communication. The contrast of liberty and totalitarian intent was startling and breathtaking.

To the far left of the window view was a new housing development intruding into largely undeveloped land, like an extending finger, with brown hills above it and a large hay farm in front and below stretching far forward and to the right of my view. Here residents made choices that enhanced the quality and comfort of their lives largely free from total government spying and restriction—or so they thought.

The number of churches to the population seemed unusually high, five church steeples reaching skyward, as if begging for the influence of God in their community, in what looked to be no more than 300 structures, mostly apartments, as seen from my window—all within a mile of where I was. I attended one of the churches and was greeted with the opening song “America the Beautiful,” the classic patriotic tune words written by Katherine Lee Bates and music by Samuel A. Ward. It housed the favorite words “America! America!” followed by four phrases in four verses “God shed his grace on thee,” and, “God mend thine every flaw,” and, “May God thy gold refine,” and again, “God shed his grace on thee.” Obviously, these Christians loved their liberty. A similar tune representing a relationship between God, country and liberty could have been found throughout most of the country the Sunday before the 4th of July.

In stark contrast off in the distance about two miles, but still clearly visible from the left side of the same window, was the most profound symbol of big government ever—the new NSA spy center, the largest in the world, capable of holding a yottabyte of information collected from every person on earth, some say, for generations to come. These enormous, ugly, grey, windowless, buildings perched on a hill with intimidating guard-houses restricting entrance, represented potential total control of the actions and thoughts

of every human. What is different about the Bluffdale, Utah spy center from other such centers in the United States is that the government does not deny that it specifically targets its own citizens.

Much has been published on NSA government spying of its own people and LibertyUnderFire.org has published on this topic two previous articles, so nothing new is found in this one. A project began under George W. Bush and accelerated under Barack Obama, Bluffdale “is the final piece in a complex puzzle assembled over the past decade. Its purpose: to intercept, decipher, analyze, and store vast swaths of the world’s communications as they zap down from satellites and zip through the underground and undersea cables of international, foreign, and domestic networks… Flowing through its servers and routers and stored in near-bottomless databases will be all forms of communication, including the complete contents of private emails, cell phone calls, and Google searches, as well as all sorts of personal data trails— parking receipts, travel itineraries, bookstore purchases, and other digital “pocket litter” (“The NSA Is Building the Country’s Biggest Spy Center. Watch What You Say.”) The project was code named “Stellar Wind.”

Fortunately the secret is out and the public has known about their government spying on them for well over a year, some much longer. Even the ill informed make government surveillance jokes, but still the collection continues. It is as though everyone is in denial. It is as though the revelations of the last two years could not really be real. No one is really being arrested or punished for their thoughts. Yet. The noose is not tight. And what is a yottabyte of information anyway? The size description is incomprehensible adding to brain overload. A yottabyte is 1,000 zettabytes (the number 1 followed by 24 zeros -- 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000). That “318 scientists, computer engineers, and other staff work in secret on the cryptanalytic applications of high-speed computing and other classified projects” (Cryptome, March 16, 2012, “NSA Decryption Multipurpose Research Facility”), making what is now happening possible, merely adds to the incomprehensiveness of the subject.

Monday morning the same light flooded the room. The same symbols of liberty and oppression lay in stark contrast below. The same five church steeples reach for the sky as though to appeal to God for His influence. The same residents drive by, perhaps the greatest symbol of totalitarianism of all time, on their way to work, as though it does not exist. Some may even work at this place to help give the government details on their neighbor. Everything about this ugly, windowless, grey structure violates the Constitution. Chances are those of the community next door that sing of freedom will return to office the same Democrats and Republicans that authorized and funded their surveillance. I closed the window. If I too ignore what it shows, it will go away. Right?

Gail S. Rhoades 06/28/1949 --- 06/25/2014 A woman with a heart that could not be bigger.

She spent her life pursuing education, helping people, training other people to help others and helping animals. With an MSN, she pursued cutting edge medical technology from the latest research to holistic healing practices and received many certificates. She wanted to help as many people as she could. Years were spent training others to help those that needed it. She spent her nursing career in Taft, Bakersfield, Houston and Los Angeles. Her gracious, loving and caring nature will forever be remembered.

She is survived by her brother, Bill Rhoades and wife, Carol. Niece, Aletha Caldwell and husband, Carl, great nieces, Mackenzie, Janelle and Carly. Her youngest brother, Kevin (Casey) Rhoades, nephew, Joseph, niece, Sheri-Ann and great niece, Alexis. Services were held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints at 851 Monica Street, Bakersfield, CA 93306 on Wednesday, July 2nd at 11:00am.
