Alpha House The Alpha House has been in the news a lot lately. The Alpha House is in Taft is but it is not just for Taft, it is used for women from all over Kern County. It is something that is needed but is something you hardly ever hear about.

There is a reason you do not hear much about it and that is because of the victims safety. Several people were upset that the Alpha House was on the news and that there were pictures of it. They are right for being upset but if donations are not made it will be gone.

The Alpha House is more than just a women’s shelter.

They also have counseling and much more. While working in Law Enforcement I dealt with Domestic Violence almost every night. I indirectly have worked with the alpha house several times and it truthfully saved these women.

It is extremely hard for a lot of the women to leave for a number of reasons. Some of these women are in fear that their abuser will come after them and their children to hurt or kill them, they might not have any income other than their husbands, she may not have family to help her, they don’t want to break up their family, etc. All of these reasons and many more are very hard on these women.

This is where Alpha House comes in. They provide a safe place to stay, help with finances, provide counseling, and much more. They operate on Grants and Donations. If you would like to donate call the Alpha House hotline at 763-4357.

Everyone has their own opinion about giving money to charities, homeless, needs centers, shelters, etc. The Alpha House is a place where your money will be used to do so many good things for these women. No matter what bad experiences you have had donating to other places, please donate to the Alpha House because that donation will be used to save these women and get their lives back on track.

We do not need to lose another good thing in Taft and it is more than just that, it is a much needed thing for all of Kern County.

On a happy note, the West Hills Church of the Nazarene is presenting a free showing of “God’s Not Dead” the movie at the Taft Fox Theatre on Sunday August 10th.

There will be 100 seats available at each showing free of charge. The showings will be at 2 and 5pm. This is a great movie and shows you how things can change in a second so you had better accepted God in your heart. This is a must see movie so please take advantage of this free showing. There is not much better than a great movie and some Foxcorn at the Fox Theatre. This is just one of the many great free events that the West Hills Church of the Nazarene does for our amazing community. The West Hills church of the Nazarene is located at 300 Lassen Street, their Sunday morning Service is at 10:30.

There are several openings on Local Boards. The Taft City Schools, Taft High, Taft College, Taft City Council, Healthcare District, and West Kern Water Board, all have openings. If you are interested in running for any of the boards you need to get your paperwork in by August 8th.

If you are not registered to vote you need to hurry and register so you’ll be able to vote in the November Election.

The dirt work has started on Sandy Creek Estates west of Hillard Street. Looks like everything is going as expected for the new Best Western. The other motels in Taft like the Sunset and Caprice Motel have recently made several improvements, so have your family and friends check them out when they visit Taft. It is hot so check out the Rec, watch a movie at the Fox Theatre and don’t forget Tuesdays is family night, or relax with a book from Ben’s Books.

Obituary

Mary Frances Garner April 17, 1925 to July 27, 2014 Mary Frances (Argeson) Garner was born in Denver, Colorado, on April 15, 1925, to Samuel Demetrius Argeropulos (Argeson) and Amanda Ermentine Custer (Argeropulos) Argeson. She left this earth to be with our Lord on July 27, 2014, in Bakersfield, California. She is preceded in death by her parents, a half-brother Durwood Crabb and half-sister Jewell, and her beloved husband of (then) forty years, James L. Garner.

Most of Mary’s childhood and young adulthood was spend in Long Beach, California. An accomplished violinist, she played in the Long Beach Women’s Symphony and worked in the downtown Long Beach Humphrey’s Music Store, where she met James Garner, a Chief Warrant Officer in the Army stationed in Long Beach as leader of the 507th Coast Artillery Band.

They married on October 17, 1944, and left for Texas soon after. While Jim was stationed in Japan, Mary came to live in Taft. She got a job working for the County of Kern in offices at the Fort.

When Jim was discharged from the Army, the couple decided to live in Taft temporarily, with Jim taking the position of Supervisor of Music with Taft City School District until other employment in a bigger city could be found. Happily, they never left. Mary continued to work for the County in several positions. She served under County Supervisors A. W. Noon and Vance Webb. She was an eligibility worker for the Kern County Welfare Department (now the Department of Human Services) for many years, retiring from that position, first in 1981, then again a decade later. She came out of retirement to serve as Field Representative on the West Side for County Supervisors Ken Peterson and Ray Watson, before retiring again in 2009.

Mary also worked briefly for Standard Oil in their offices located in Elk Hills.

Mary and Jim Garner were very involved in many aspects of Taft life.

They were active members of the First Baptist Church where Jim served as Church Moderator and Choir Director and Mary served as Sunday School Superintendent. They together taught a “young marrieds” Sunday School class for many years. Mary served as President of the Taft Women’s Improvement Club, located on North Street in what now is the home of Community Christian Fellowship. The Womens’ Club was responsible for bringing guest speakers, fashion shows, and floral and garden shows to Taft. Mary, along with Shirley Calhoun and Mary Poloynis (wife of Gregory Poloynis, local optometrist), formed a trio which played for many local events, including Masonic and Eastern Star installations. Mary and Jim were active in the Taft Community Concert Association, bringing world class talent to the Taft High School stage. Jim served on the West Side Hospital District. In her later years, Mary became very interested in the West Kern Oil Museum, serving as their Board Secretary for many years.

As busy as their lives were, Mary and Jim had time to raise two children, Kathy (Garner) Orrin of Taft and Sam Garner of Fresno. During the time their children were in high school, the Garner family was an American Field Service (AFS) Host Family to Dorle Josten (of Frankfurt, Germany—Taft High’s first exchange student) and Pawan Vermani (of Afghanistan--now a pulmonary specialist in the Pasadena, California area).

Mary was known for her quick wit and her winning sense of humor. She could find the funny side to any situation. Her ability to get into and to recount escapades with her wonderful friend, Pauline Vetrovec, delighted her family and friends. She was kind, hard-working, and loyal. Even through the escalating stages of her illness, she remained sweet and considerate to all who assisted her. It has been a privilege to know her.

Mary is survived by her daughter Kathy Orrin, son-in-law Ron Orrin, Mary’s granddaughter Mary Alice (Orrin) Finn and her husband Brian, (great granddaughters Reagan and Eliza), and son Zackery Garner Orrin; Mary’s son Sam Garner, her grandson Gabriel and Diane DiDonato of New York, and her great grandson Cassius Garner. Also close to Mary were her niece Beverly Peterson and her husband Frank, their children Heidi, Dirk, and Heather, and their spouses and children, all of Minnesota.

The family would like to acknowledge the loving care received at The Hallmark Assisted Living facility in Bakersfield where Mary lived for over three years. They thank Carol Hatton and the staff of Continuum Senior Care Management for their valuable education, support, and kindness to Mary and the family during this difficult journey, and they express their appreciation to the staff of Gentiva Hospice for their care in the last stages of Mary’s life.

A Memorial Service for Mary F. Garner will be held at the West Hills Church of the Nazarene, 300 Lassen Street in Taft, on Friday, August 8, 2014, at 2 p.m., with her Pastor, the Rev. Rodney Wikoff presiding. In lieu of flowers, friends and well-wishers may wish to give to the West Kern Oil Museum, Youth For Christ of Bakersfield, or to Alzheimer’s Disease Association of Kern County (ADAKC) in Mary’s name. Arrangements are under the direction of Erickson and Brown Mortuary. There will be no viewing.

Filing Opens for Local Elected Offices for November Election

By Jerry Livingston, J.D. jerry.taft.independent@gmail.com July 28th began the final one hundred days leading up to elections on November 4, 2014. We can expect to see more campaign ads as Congress starts its summer recess.

For local elections, the season usually kicks off the day after Labor Day. The nomination period for a the cities of Taft and Maricopa, all local school districts and special districts began July 14, 2014 and Nominations Papers must be filed concurrently by 5:00 p.m. on August 8, 2014. Should any current elected official choose not to run, the nomination period will be extended to August 13, 2014 at 5:00 p.m., for that specific seat.

Voters may request Vote by Mail ballots with regular applications October 6, through October 28, 2014.

The last day to register to vote will be October 20, 2014.

Seats currently up for elections locally are: City of Taft Mayor Paul Linder and Councilmembers Ron Waldrop and Randy Miller are all finishing out their current terms with Waldrop and Miller indicating they will be seeking another term and Linder saying he will not run for another term.

City of Maricopa The seats held by Councilmember Cynthia Tonkin and current Mayor Virgil Bell and City Treasurer Dorine Horn are on the ballot this November.

Taft FFA Attends Washington, D.C. Leadership Conference This past week Taft FFA Students Cindy Kendrick, Shane Stubblefield, Jaycee Sharp, Justin Studer, Andrew Moore, and Erika Knowles attended the National FFA’s Washington Leadership Conference held in Washington DC. During the five-day event, students attended thirteen sessions dedicated to teaching them how to become effective leaders by learning their purpose, how to value people, how to take action, and how to serve Taft FFA Students in Washington with Congressman Kevin McCarty others.

American History, the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Over the course of the conference students also visited and Fords Theater. Students also met with Congressmen Arlington National Cemetery, Capitol Hill, the Jefferson and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy and where given a Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the World War II tour of the capital by his staff.

Liberty Under Fire Hamas’s War on Israel

By Harold Pease, Ph. D The relentless missile attacks on Israel now exceed 2600 in the first 20 days of the Hamas/Israeli War. Fortunately only 43 Israeli soldiers have been killed because of Israel’s elaborate missile defense system. Return fire, however, has reportedly left 1,035 Palestinians dead in a war that appears to have no immediate end, despite President Barack Obama’s appeal for a cease-fire. At issue, and a major reason for the Israeli ground offensive in the Gaza Strip, are the million-dollar concrete-lined tunnels from the Strip into Israel designed to launch internal attacks inside heavily populated areas—28 discovered to date.

All this is commonly known.

What isn’t—at least for those under age 35—and the need for this column, is the history behind the conflict.

Those who rush in with traditional answers to such conflicts like cease-fires and peace plans have no hope of ending the hostilities. This is perhaps the single most complex area on the planet and Jerusalem is geographically the home of three of the world’s largest and competing religions: Judaism, Islam and Christianity; the most aggressive being Islam, which has a very low tolerance for any faith other than their own. Hostilities between they and Judaism reach back 4,000 years to Father Abraham and his sons Ishmael and Isaac, each the ethnic father of one of the religions. The “permanent feud” began when Ishmael and his mother Hagar were expelled from Abraham’s family.

Of course we should assist where possible in solving the feud but the reality is, no other powers on earth has been able to do so for 4,000 years and there will be an Israeli/Islamic conflict decades to come. It, as in the past, will be resolved by “might is right” and today, try as they might, the Arabic countries cannot liquidate their unwanted neighbor.

History basically left the Israelis without a homeland during the Middle Ages and they were scattered largely throughout Europe mostly because of Islamic intolerance.

England came to dominate the Middle East after World War I and they clearly favored the creation of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. A constant trickle of Jews flowed into Palestine joining those who had never left. World sympathy for the scattered Jews was amplified during and after World War II when Adolph Hitler annihilated at least 6 million of them and the trickle to Palestine turned into a river.

After the war, in 1947, the United Nations created the State of Israel. The plan was to divide the Holy Land between the Israelis and the Palestinians; each having its own homeland but the plan was rejected by the Palestinians and all Arabic countries, who denied Israel’s right to even exist. So much so that the League of Arab States formed in 1945 (consisting of the six surrounding countries) attacked Israel after it was recognized as a country by the United States. In the resultant war Israel retained its right to exist but the rest of the Palestine area was divided between competing Arabic states: Jordan had the West Bank and Egypt the Gaza Strip. Now, because of their refusal to allow the Jews a homeland, the Palestinians were without one. Arabic states again attacked Israel in 1967, vowing to destroy them, and were soundly defeated in a six-day war.

By this time the West had little interest in the original plan of providing the Palestinians a homeland and as a result of the wars encouraged by them, and the Arabic countries surrounding them, Israel had come to possess

most of the land that would have made up a Palestinian state. Moreover, they were building settlements on it.

The Palestinians longed to remove the Jews from “their” land and during the 1980’s initiated six years of uprisings and again in 2004 under Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

The most contended Palestinian land included the West Bank, next to Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip on the coast.

Israel has been receptive to removing their settlements in these areas but the Arabic community still denies Israel’s right to exist, thus peace is unlikely to come to the region for some time.

Enter Hamas, which began as a Palestinian political party winning a majority of seats in the Palestinian Authority Parliament in 2006. It divided the Palestinian people into moderates and extremists (even terrorists) quite willing to use terroristic tactics such as human shields and suicide bombs to achieve their objectives.

Hamas seized the Gaza Strip from the Palestinian Authority, which controlled the West Bank. It is this faction of the Palestinian people that have attacked Israel and that are responsible for the invasive tunnels into Israel.

Of course, money for the costly tunnels and the missiles almost entirely comes from the Islamic states around the Holy Land.

Hopefully this historical overview will be helpful as we view the horrors of war from this part of the world.

Meanwhile the missiles and death will continue.
