Democratic Convention: Dead Wrong on Energy

By Tom Borelli The recent Democratic National Convention included a full-fledged assault on one of the central pillars of the American economy: fossil fuels. The official convention platform calls for completely replacing oil and natural gas with renewables by 2050.

This is a delusional, disastrous position. Renewables can’t meet our country’s energy needs. And squeezing the oil and gas sector with onerous regulations could destroy millions of jobs.

Today, the fossil fuel industry is an indispensable part of the American job market, employing about one out of every twenty workers. That’s 9.8 million jobs. And within the next two decades, it’s expected to generate another two million positions.

Unfortunately, Democrats are opting to sacrifice these jobs to the green agenda. Their convention platform promises to “move beyond the ‘all of the above’ energy approach” and “run entirely on clean energy by midcentury.”

That’s a pipe dream. Despite receiving billions in public support, renewables still only constitute a small fraction of America’s energy economy. A decade ago, they generated about 10 percent of U.S. electricity. Today, they generate 13 percent. That’s a miniscule improvement.

Meanwhile, fossil fuels continue to fulfill the vast majority of our energy needs, with gas and oil generating over 67 percent of the country’s electricity.

The Democrat’s crusade against oil and gas shouldn’t come as a surprise. Two of the members of the convention committee are unapologetic environmental extremists: Bill McKibben, a long-time foe of the fossil fuel industry, and Carol Browner, a former official at the Environmental Protection Agency.

Their extremism does not reflect the will of the public. Four out of five Americans favor increased domestic production of gas and oil.

Democrats’ anti-fossil fuel crusade also represents a betrayal of one of their core constituencies: labor unions. Many of the positions created by oil and gas are blue-collar manufacturing jobs covered by the AFL-CIO, United Steelworkers, and other major unions. These positions are well-paid, skill-intensive, and largely immune to outsourcing -- that is, they’re precisely what the American working class needs.

And yet, Democrats are pushing policies that will squash their growth.

Democrats need to halt their misguided mission against oil and gas companies. These firms are helping millions of Americans earn a living while generating huge environmental benefits. Meanwhile, renewables are nowhere near ready for prime time; they can’t be the backbone of our energy economy. As they move toward the election, Democrats should ditch their harmful energy message and own up to the facts.

The Media’s Responsibility to Our Democracy

By Lee H. Hamilton Politicians spend a good bit of their time complaining about the media. But why should they have all the fun?

I’m going to join in, though I tend to get upset about different things than most sitting politicians do. You see, I don’t actually mind when journalists — whether in print, on television or online — treat what politicians say with skepticism. That means they’re doing their jobs.

But this doesn’t happen nearly as much these days as it should. The media today is less objective, more ideological, and much showier than it once was. What you see can be eye-catching — both the graphics and the personalities — but it is also brash and relentlessly self-promoting. A lot of journalists don’t just want to report the news, they want to be players and affect policy. They see politics as a blood sport, often exaggerating the differences among players.

As one observer said, the media is drawn to “superficiality, sensationalism, scandal, and sleaze.” They’re all too happy to seize on small points of contention and fan them into major points of discord. They make building a consensus — the key task of the democratic process — much harder.

The field has been moving in this direction over decades, and there’s a reason for it: all these changes have been well received by the public. They draw viewers, readers and clicks. And they’ve encouraged consumers to pay attention only to the sources that reflect and broadcast their own viewpoint.

I don’t want to be a fogey here. Yes, I grew up in the days of Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite, and I still think they were solid journalists, but what I miss is not the voice-of-authority-from-on-high that’s so often associated with them. Instead, what I too often find lacking now is the spirit that drove the profession in those days. I think the news media had a sense of responsibility to make representative democracy function. Journalists imbued their work with a palpable sense that they were involved in a public service.

There are still really excellent journalists out there who are doing their best to serve both their profession and the country. Every day they struggle to make sense of enormously complex events. What they understand — and what I wish more of their colleagues believed — is that democracy demands journalism that improves its workings. Properly done, journalism can bridge differences, help consensus emerge, improve the knowledge and judgment of voters, and sharpen the performance of public officials and government as a whole.

In the end, the democratic process is about overcoming disagreement. This is virtually impossible without a solid base of information and analysis.

Governing well is immensely difficult, and good journalism can keep government open and honest — which serves not just the voters, but politicians who are trying to resolve the problems facing the country. Journalists can and should be watchdogs, keeping a watchful eye on politicians — what they do, what they say…and what they don’t do or say. They should serve not just the elites, but the underdogs and have-nots in society.

The independence of our press was hard to win, and it’s vital that we sustain it. People must have sources they can rely on in order to make our system work. Our democracy needs well-informed citizens making decisions based on facts about both policies and politicians.

This means that the model of the journalist that seems to be going out of fashion — reporters who were reasonably objective, independent of outside groups, and even independent of their company’s owners — is actually crucial to representative government. Curious, skeptical journalists who point out inconsistencies, draw attention to mistakes, call out misleading statements, and identify outright lies serve a larger purpose: they provide citizens what they need to know in order to be a good citizen, and public officials what they need in order to do their work well.

This is quite an ideal, especially in this age of economic turmoil within the media universe. But I don’t think it’s too much to hope that as the profession sorts out its future, it takes seriously its leadership role in advancing the public good, and doesn’t sacrifice its part in making representative democracy work properly.

After nearly 3 years of hard work and perseverance, Shari Rightmer is opening Taft’s first aquaculture farm.

On Wednesday, Rightmer got closer to realizing her dream of growing food using a water and fish based aquatic system.

Rightmer’s board of directors and supporters of Up Cycle Aquaponics gathered for a ground breaking ceremony at the city approved site at 610 Kern Street.

Taft Chamber Director Kathy Orrin, Mayor Randy Miller and other local dignitaries were on hand for the ceremony.

When construction is completed, tentatively scheduled in late November, the facility will be open to the public for business.

Aquaponics is a food growing system of water and fish without the use of soil in which the plants roots are nourished by fish waste in a water environment. A filtration system purifies the water throughout the process.

Rightmer is excited to launch her urban and micro farming idea to Taft. She is hopeful that this will bring new opportunities, and a new healthy and sanitary method of farming foods.

Shari’s plants will contain no GMO’s (genetically modified organisms). The solar powered system will use 90 to 95% less water than traditional farming.

“We expect to grow 1,000 to 1,800 fresh plants monthly,” said Rightmer. “Through the Aquaponic system, we will use Koi Fish to supplement the water system and plants.”

“We support Shari’s project which will provide many benefits to Taft,” said Taft Mayor Randy Miller.

Rightmer is the director of the Shar-On Foundation, a community non-profit.

The project is a partnership of several government and private agencies.

Shari wants to give this experience to everyone, and thanks everyone who believes in this concept.

Deadline Nears for Unsecured Property Tax Bills Kern County Treasurer and Tax Collector, Jordan Kaufman announces that the deadline for payment of unsecured property taxes is August 31, 2016. Unsecured (personal) property tax bills are for items such as business equipment, farm equipment, aircraft, boats, and similar assets that are not attached to real estate. Unsecured tax bills were mailed on July 25, 2016, to all unsecured property owners whose addresses are known to the County Assessor-Recorder and who had ownership of the personal property as of January 1, 2016.

Taxpayers may inquire or make payments on their property taxes in person, by mail, or via the Internet. This is a great and EASY dessert to fix in a hurry. I remember fixing it to take to a picnic as it needs no refrigeration.

This is one of the recipes I found somewhere years ago and it sounded to easy to be true. So, I tried it and loved it. You could sift some powdered sugar on top to pretty it up.

During World War II, the government along, with different businesses, published many helpful recipe books to cook cheap and flavorful meals with the products of the time. My mother-in-law, Dorothea Collins had many of these. I inherited these recipe books and they are a wonderful step back into time. So many of these products do not exist today. I will be including some of the old recipes and timely (for that period) household hints.

One of the “helpful hints”: A place at the dinner table is set very much as it is for luncheon, except that there is no bread-and-butter plate, that some extra knives or forks are added and that the napkin is large and matches the cloth.

My dear mother-in-law had so many tablecloths and matching napkins that I am sure she set a beautiful table every day. I know that she had more sets of dishes than I could count.

Dorothea (Dottie) was born in 1901 and was a very proper lady that grew up in Chicago and Ohio. She had two sisters, Mary and Margaret. All three of them went to work

7 for Bell Telephone. Bell Telephone helped their employees with subsidized housing at the Belmont Hotel in downtown Chicago. There was even a doctor provided on staff at the hotel to make sure the employees stayed healthy. We found a beautiful picture of Dottie’s sister, Margart, making a commercial of a telephone lineman repairing a telephone line while she stood along the highway waiting for a ride.

And another photo is of the president of Bell Telephone and several workers, Margaret included, announcing the 2000th telephone to be installed in the city of Chicago.

Imagine the wonderful inventions that she witnessed over her 89 years.?

WACKY CAKE 1 ½ cups sifted flour 1 cup sugar 3 tbsp cocoa 1 tsp soda ¼ tsp salt In 10 inch square glass baking dish: Sift all dry ingredients together. Make 3 wells. In one well place 2 tsp vanilla. In the other well, place 1 tbsp white vinegar. In third well, place 5 tbsp vegetable oil. Pour 1 cup cold water carefully over mixture and mix. Don’t beat. Mix enough to blend ingredients. Bake in moderate oven 350 degrees til done.

Liberty Under Fire Early Hillary Scandals Ignored in the 2016 Presidential Race

By Harold Pease, Ph. D In the vetting procedure of finding a president of the United States both major political parties normally stoop to new lows to find a scoop that paralyzes their opponent. Donald Trump is said to have over 24 agents assigned to him to do just this. Presumably every wrong, or even the appearance of wrong, is usable fodder to destroy. No one normally escapes this scrutiny but one, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Yes, recent scandals, as for example, Benghazi, the violation of the Federal Records Act with respect to preserving national security secrets, the Clinton Foundation Scandal, still under FBI investigation, and the DNC email scandal to derail Bernie Sanders, are well known. Most major presses have faulted her on honesty some few even using the phase “compulsive liar” to describe past behavior but few give new voters any detail on old unresolved scandals as we do in this column.

Basically, the Clinton strategy has been to outlast the scandal until the public grows tired of it and devoted follower’s demand that we move on. With an adoring press, as the Clinton’s have had for forty years, this is possible and party faithful conclude that nothing must have been there in the first place. It is nothing like Richard Nixon’s Watergate where the press was relentless until the corruption exposed was driven from the White House. Some of the 22 scandals attributed to Hillary by WND TV are equal to, or worse than, Watergate. Still, as with Whitewater, everyone else involved traditionally goes to prison and the Clinton’s move upward in power.

We now identify four more of the major Hillary Clinton scandals for those not old enough to have experienced them personally. This could explain why the older generation is not so willing to have this couple back in the White House.

The Taft Independent Cattle Futures and Hillary’s 9,987 percent profit.

In Hillary’s first commodity trade, in 1978, a $1,000 investment in 10 cattle futures, which normally cost $12,000, netted her in 10 months $100,000; some $6,300 the first day. She attributed this “profit miracle” to her having read the Wall Street Journal but it was instead through the help of James B. Blair, counsel to Tyson Foods Inc., and Robert L. Bone of AK Financial Services, who allowed the unusual, and apparently, unlawful trades. Bone was suspended for three years and fined the “largest fine at the time in exchanges history,” but Hillary walked. Insider trading most certainly was involved. Martha Stewart, convicted of something similar years later, served time.

Travelgate: A lucrative job for my friends.

Soon after moving into the White House what became known as Travelgate emerged. Hillary, seeking a financially lucrative place for her friends Harry and Susan Thomases, had Billy Dale, head of the White House Travel Office, fired on trumpt-up income tax fraud charges. This not enough, she had six others (the whole department, all career employees not subject to replacement without cause) fired as well replacing them with her Arkansas political cronies. Hillary used the FBI and IRS and the Attorney Generals Office under Janet Reno to harass Billy Dale for several years.

Dale was subsequently found innocent of all charges.

Hillary was found to have made false statements to investigators (perjury) but still walked free. Her real crime was in trying to send an innocent man to prison.

Filegate: Collecting 900 files on potential political adversaries.

In 1993 and 1994 Craig Livingstone, Director of White House Personnel Security gathered, presumably at the request of his Arkansas friend Hillary Clinton, FBI background files on some 900 potential political enemies most Republican. Hillary is alleged to have viewed some of the files but there is no evidence that these were used on anyone. That they were gathered with the intent to use is serious enough. Hillary called this a, “completely honest bureaucratic snafu,” when this was brought to light by the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee. The Committee also showed that President Clinton “had illegally released Privacy Act protected information from White House files to smear Kathleen Willey, a woman who

August 18 - 24, 2016 was a material witness in the impeachment proceedings, as she was also sexually harassed … while working for him in the White House” (Larry Klayman, Proof Hillary isn’t fit to be president, Renew American, Jan. 26, 2013) The Lincoln Bedroom: What is a sleepover worth to you?

The Clinton’s learned that they could rent the Lincoln Bedroom in the White House for hefty campaign contributions and acquired $5.4 million in 1995 and 1996 alone doing just this. The average contribution for the 800-900 persons who eventually did this was $100,000 each. The biggest donors included Dirk Ziff at $411,000, Steven Spielberg at $336,000, William Rollnick at $235,000 and Lew Wasserman at $225,000 (Lincoln Bedroom Guests Gave $5.4 Million, Allpolitics , CNN Time, Feb. 26, 1997).

Although the funds went to Bill in particular, there is no way that Hillary was not highly involved in this activity. That the use of government property or assets for political purposes was illegal was circumvented because no specific amounts were discussed and no money exchanged at the site.

Someone once said the past is the best predictor of the future.
