Passport, Basic Employee Safety, Forklift Training Begins August 5 The Resource Center is collaborating with WESTEC to have a 3 week certification program in Taft. The classes will start on August 5 - 23 Monday - Friday, 8 - 4:30. These classes will be FREE but the participants MUST attend ALL classes in order to receive their certifications. Classes will include: Passport, Basic Employee Safety, Forklift Training, First Aid/CPR, Confined Space, Defensive Driving, MSHA-Mine Safety, 40 Hours HAZWOPPER, California Commercial Drivers License Permit Preparation. These certifications will not only make you attractive to oil companies but will be impressive to most prospective employers.

West Side Recreation Vendor and Craft Show November 15 and 16, Vendors Sought Westside Recreation District will be hosting a VENDOR & CRAFT SHOW on Friday, November 15 (5:00-8:30 p.m.) and Saturday, November 16 (8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.). By Dr. Kathy Orrin, Executive Director After such a success as the 2013 Fireworks Show . . . what’s next?

The next big thing for the Chamber is not even a Chamber thing. Shannon will remind you of the upcoming events, e.g., car cruise nights, the golf tournament, the fishing derby, and the Christmas parade. But we have a very important task before us at the Chamber: the support of the Greater Taft Economic Development Authority’s submission of the sevenmonth-long ad hoc committee’s findings.

For over six months, various members of our community—at least thirty-five business owners, executives, service providers, upper-level managers, retirees, politicians and contractors--have met to learn what modern-day economic development looks like, to study the current attributes of our community, and to make educated planning suggestions for growth on the West side. Their work has been guided by Mike Dozier, Executive Director of Fresno State University’s Office of Community and Economic Development and Ishmael Herrera, RDC Director, also of Fresno State University. And we have been treated to wonderful dinners from the Taft College Cafeteria, La Salsa, Asian Experience, Black Gold Deli, OT Cookhouse, Willow Ranch (of Buttonwillow), and Albertson’s (4 times!!)—all of whom are Chamber members.

Our dinners were sponsored by Taft College, West Kern Water District, the City of Taft, The Chamber, the West Side

August 2 - 8, 2013 Recreation and Park District, Monarch Fleet Services, the West Side Health Care District, and Albertson’s. We also would like to thank the West Kern Oil Museum and Taft College who made space available to us when necessary.

Many of you may recall “planning studies” or “vision meetings” or may have been involved in gatherings open to the community where folks spoke of their desires for the future of Taft. This ad hoc committee format was very different from those “open forums” of the past. The ad hoc committee participants were treated to the perspectives of many professional specialists who reported to the committee the current status of economic development in Taft and the prospects for Taft’s future. We heard from agriculture, oil, commercial and residential real estate, workforce developers, and financial entities—people who know the West Side and have up-to-the-minute information on what is happening in our area. Much of the committee’s task was to assimilate the information into workable and attainable steps toward economic growth for Taft.

And the report is in. On Saturday, August 10, the Executive Board of the Greater Taft Economic Development Authority (GTEDA) will meet to review, amend and/or approve the suggestions made by the information collected by the facilitators of the project.

The report and the Executive Summary of the GTEDA Board will be presented to the members of the Taft City Council in a regularly-scheduled Council meeting on Tuesday evening, August 20, 6:00 p.m., in City Council Chambers. The public is, of course, invited.

For those of you who cannot attend the Council meeting, we will publish the findings in future editions of the Taft Chamber Newsletter. To all ad hoc committee participants, thank you for your hard work!

Taft Resident Excited About Invitation to X-Games

Nicole Madsen never dreamed building dirt jumps and jumping over bikes as a kid would lead to competing in the X-Games in Los Angeles next month.

After receiving the email invitation last week, she barely found the words to describe her feelings. “I’m really excited and blessed. It’s an awesome opportunity.”

Madsen first started riding when she was eight on a “Big Wheel 65”. Riding with friends in the dirt fields around town, she began racing at twelve practicing at the Taft Arenacross. Competing in a couple of series in northern California, she moved on to the World OffRoad Championship Series (WORCS) traveling to other states such as Nevada and Washington. Going Pro at sixteen she followed with the Men’s Moto-Cross Nationals, competing alongside other professional women racers in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Texas, Colorado, and the East Coast.

Moto-X riders are daredevils of sorts when they’re competing. The bike track propels them around curves and over gaps spanning sixtyfive feet. “There’s a feeling of flying, kind of a stalled feeling at the top,” she told me. “I kind of blank out and ride from muscle memory, not really thinking about what I’m doing.”

I asked her if she was a daredevil as a child. She told me how she used to ride with the boys. “They would stack five bikes together and

When asked about the selection process for the X-Games, she said she submitted videos showcasing her skills and competitive talent back in March, 2013. Then she sent more videos showing her progression of skills. “They wanted to know I had the ability to compete.”

She told me her family is in shock, never thinking she’d make it this far. After all, being selected as one of the world’s best athletes is quite an honor. To prepare for the event Madsen exercises daily at the gym.

Weekends, she lives part-time in Temecula, practicing at the Supercross track.

“I’m living my dream,” she said. “I’ve always watched and always wanted to compete.” When I asked her what winning her event would mean she responded, “Everything. It’s hard to imagine. It would be a turning point in my career.”

Madsen will be competing in the Moto-X series on Saturday, August 3rd, at 9:00pm. Broadcasts will be shown on ESPN with recaps and highlights to be shown on ABC a few weeks later.

This week, Congressman McCarthy launched the bipartisan Congressional Valley Fever Task Force in his effort to bring awareness to the fight against this disease.

The Task Force’s goal is to share information with stakeholders in the medical and scientific fields to foster new advancements in prevention and treatment as well as work with community organizations to help educate individuals on the disease.

“Many if not all of us know a family member, friend, neighbor, or co-worker that has been affected by Valley Fever and our fight against this disease continues,” said McCarthy. “I am honored that my colleagues in Congress are joining our community’s growing effort to raise awareness and eradicate this disease.”

Co-chairing this effort is Congressman David Schweikert who issued this statement: “This task force is a much needed step toward raising awareness for this terrible disease and someday soon finding a cure. Valley Fever has silently affected entire communities in the southwest including our family, friends, and even beloved pets. I am hopeful that this working group will bring awareness, reduce the risk of misdiagnoses, and bring about a cure within the decade.”

Helping our effort is Congressman David Valadao who issued the following statement: “I am proud to join this bipartisan group in the House to address an important issue to my constituents. I look forward to working with members of this caucus to educate the public about this terrible disease and advocate for those most affected by it.”

The Taft is more a lotthan more than just a Theater! It’s a Community Treasure.

The Taft FoxFox is a lot Community just a Theater! Effort to Keep Theater Open Under Way then to the Fox Theatre almost every Saturday Night. I went from sitting next to my parents to being cool and sitting in the row in front of my parents. Then in Lincoln Jr. High, I had to be real cool and sit in the front row.

Now 20 some years later I’m back sitting toward the back of the Theatre with my wife, daughter, and my parents.

The only bad memory that everyone will remember as a kid about the Fox, is going downstairs to the scary Restrooms. I was scared to death to go down there without my Dad. It was even more scary than going upstairs to the Restroom at Jeno’s Restaurant. I have so many great memories as a kid in Taft and I want my daughter to have the same memories as she grows up. Over the years the Fox has had Concerts, Reunions, and much more. During Oildorado 2005 they showed one of the movies that was filmed in Taft and the place was packed.

We try to go to the Fox at least once a week and I see several others doing the same thing. They have done a great job getting family movies this summer. The Fox has come and gone a few times since I was a kid. The Fox has great Admission Prices, Concession Prices, it is very clean, and has great Customer Service. Friday and Saturday Nights they sell Domino’s Pizza for only $1.00 a slice.

We need to give donations and do what we have to do to keep the Fox going. Movies before 6 pm are only $5.00. Go to the Fox tonight and see a great movie. Also any evening you feel like some Popcorn stop in and buy a bag. Even if you do not like to go to the movies please support the Fox. It is not just about the Movie, it is about keeping Downtown alive, it is about the memories our kids will have in the future, and it is about a beautiful building. Please support the Fox!

At the end of the year all 35mm film will no longer be made.

The Fox Theatre must update their equipment or they will have to close. The Fox is trying to raise $40,000.

The $40,000 dollars is only the down payment for the $250,000 dollars total it will need to replace equipment.

The rest of the $250,000 will be paid over the years in monthly payments. At the end of the year all 35mm Film will no longer be made. The Fox Theatre has no choice and must update all their equipment to stay open. With the help of all of us the Fox Theatre will hopefully never close again.

The Fox is going to start a Kickstarter project. The Kickstarter will have several promotions that will have everything from being rewarded popcorn to having an opportunity to have naming rights of the three Theatres.

Like David and Emily my Parents had their first date there and it was a lot longer than 25 years ago. My Mom had her first job at the Fox Theater.

Liberty Under Fire Censoring Eisenhower and religious freedom in the military

If President Eisenhower were alive today, the five-star general may be shocked to know that his own speeches are too offensive to be quoted in the military he used to command.

A military chaplain has been taken to task for fulfilling the job description that most spiritual leaders (until recently) were hired to do: talk about faith. In a harmless post for his online website, “Chaplain’s Corner,” Lt. Col. Kenneth Reyes (USAF) of the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska wrote an inspirational piece called, “No Atheists in Foxholes: Chaplains Gave All in World War II.” The phrase, which President Eisenhower made famous in 1954, dates way back to the Japanese attack at Corregidor.

Reyes had hoped to encourage his troops - believers and nonbelievers - with the brave story of the man who first coined the quote.

Turns out, the story only encouraged the attack of anti-faith zealots. Mikey Weinstein, whose own statements are fairly wellknown (“Christian monsters of human degradation, marginalization, humiliation and tyranny”), organized a letter to Reyes’s commanding officer, Col. Brian Duffy, demanding the chaplain be censored. Weinstein and Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) representative Blake Page blasted Reyes for his “redundant use of the bigoted, religious supremacist phrase, ‘no atheists in foxholes,’” and accused the chaplain of “defil[ing] the dignity of service members.” Of course, anyone who has actually read Reyes’s column would understand how preposterous those charges are. Reyes never suggested that “there are no atheists in foxholes,” he was merely tracing, in a very neutral way, the history of the well-known phrase - a far cry from the “anti-secular diatribe” MRFF calls it. Reyes goes out of his way to include unbelievers in his piece, even suggesting that “faith” can mean different things to different people.

Nonetheless, his superior, Col. Duffy, snapped to attention and within five hours of Mikey’s complaint ordered the article scrubbed from the chaplain’s website. In his profuse apology to MRFF, he promises to keep a vigilant watch over his troops’ speech. “We remain mindful of the governing instructions on this matter and will work to avoid reoccurrence.” Not surprisingly, that didn’t satisfy Weinstein and MRFF, who are demanding a formal punishment for Reyes. “Faith-based hate is hate all the same,” Page wrote. “Lt. Col. Reyes must be appropriately reprimanded.”

For what - doing his job? Engaging in constitutionally-protected speech? Like it or not, a chaplain’s duties, by definition, are to offer prayer, spiritual guidance, and religious instruction.

Whether Duffy punishes Reyes or not, the damage has already been done. As FRC’s executive vice president, Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Jerry Boykin told Fox News’s Todd Starnes, chaplains across the military are already afraid of carrying out the most basic duties of their job. “In this case, a chaplain has been censored for expressing his beliefs about the role of faith in the lives of service members. ... Why do we have chaplains if they aren’t allowed to fulfill that purpose?”

Thankfully the U.S. House of Representatives is on the verge of passing the Defense Department budget with language inserted to protect troops’ conscience and religious rights.

Additionally, over 160,000 Americans have signed a petition to Defense Secretary Hagel, urging him to issue clear policies to protect the religious freedom of our troops. Without such protections, the free speech rights and religious liberties of our nation’s most diligent servants will continue to be trampled.

TCC members are now busily preparing images for the Kern County Fair.
