Get something to eat in Taft The most popular roller coaster from the 80’s, the Colossus is being torn down at Magic Mountain. The Colossus was in several movies and TV shows over the years. Now that I’m older I’m not into getting beat up on roller coasters but I’m sad my daughter will not get to ride it. I know some things get old and things change but I wish they were not going tear it down. I’m sure that with the demolition and the new construction costs of what is replacing it the ticket prices will go even higher.

I heard the other day California wants to raise the tax on each gallon of gasoline sold. Have you seen how many taxes we already pay for each gallon of gas with Federal, State, and Local Tax. It is crazy to think they would even consider another tax like this. I guess they think crazy decisions like this will make people want the Bullet Train, I hope not.

Please vote for the best person in the November Election not just the person in your political party. Lets hope our votes count, so many times it seems voting does not matter.

We have voted and won in the past on Los Angeles Sludge but the Sludge keeps coming to Kern County making our horrible air quality even worse.

Gas Diplomacy

By Chris Faulkner The United States produces more natural gas than any nation in the world. Yet Russia leads the world in natural-gas exports, using energy to advance its domestic repression and its foreign aggression.

It might be tempting to think that as the United States escalates its sanctions on Russia, President Obama should consider penalizing Vladimir Putin’s energy sector.

But such sanctions could backfire, undermining America’s long-term economic opportunities and foreign policy goals.

Obama’s reluctance to tighten the screws on the Kremlin’s oil and gas companies has been widely attributed to concerns about the impact on Europe’s economic recovery. But it’s also worth noting that if the Kremlin can’t peddle its ample energy to Europe, it would likely to pursue alternative markets in Brazil, India and China -- its three peers in the “BRIC” block.

Giving Russia greater incentive to penetrate these markets would be profoundly short-sighted. BRIC countries represent an incredible economic opportunity for whichever country builds export relationships there first. Given its bountiful supply of natural gas, the United States is perfectly positioned to win in these emerging markets.

Forecasts project demand for energy in BRIC nations escalating quickly. In 2005, these countries accounted for 27 percent of the world’s overall demand for primary energy -- but by 2025, that will rise to about 38 percent. In particular, both China and India are already struggling to meet their domestic needs.

In China, the energy situation has already flirted with crisis.

Heavy reliance on coal, as well as a surge in automobile use, have resulted in “airpocalypses” -- days when dense pollution shrouds large regions.

India has also experienced energy catastrophes. In the summer of 2012, short supply of energy resulted in historic blackouts -- the lights went out for more than 700 million people in July 2012.

If the United States began sending its liquefied natural gas (LNG) abroad, it could alleviate the growing problems in both China and India. It would also make the air cleaner, as natural gas produces fewer emissions than coal and oil.

Best of all, American natural gas could offer a solution to the energy problems in China and India without hindering the life-changing economic progress that has lifted millions out of poverty.

The United States must take urgent action to ensure it beats out international competitors. This begins with building the infrastructure to begin large-scale exports of natural gas.

The Department of Energy subjects permit applications to extensive review. In the last three years, though 31 separate proposals for LNG export facilities were submitted to the DOE, only one was green-lighted, while six received merely conditional approval. The rest have languished.

Russian regulators have no qualms about barreling forward.

Already, the Kremlin is trying to negotiate 20-year contracts to supply energy to Europe.

Sanctioning Russian energy may cause some short-term headaches for Putin, but it also ignites the Kremlin’s competitive ire, pushing it to expand into alternative markets. Putin has already used energy to bully Europe. Giving him the opportunity and incentive to wreak chaos elsewhere is a terrible idea.

Energy plays an increasingly critical role in the international order, and LNG makes an adept ambassador for American foreign policy. The United States should look at the big picture, preparing so we can best use our energy as a diplomatic resource.

City Council Honors Pete Gianopulos

Jerry.Taft.Independent@gmail.com The Taft City Council honored Pete Gianopulos Tuesday evening by proclaiming August 23, 2014, his 90th birthday, to be Pete Gianopulos Day Gianopulos was born and raised in Taft and except for his military service during World War II has spent his career as a teacher and guidance counselor in the Taft School system.

The proclamation was in recognition of his many years of service to the Westside community including service as mayor of Taft.

Gianopulos was also recognized as ‘originator, producer and host of ‘Taft Heritage’ a local history program produced in conjunction with Taft Union High School and the West Kern Oil Museum.

Westside Community Receives Law Enforcement Update

By Jerry Livingston J.D. Jerry.Taft.Independent@gmail.com On Thursday August 14th, members of the local public safety community, hosted by Taft Police Chief Ed Whiting, presented updates on their activities in the Taft area for the previous year.

Community members present heard from officers representing the city of Taft Police Department, Kern County Sheriffs Department, County Probation, County Animal Control, County Code Compliance, Taft Federal Corrections Institution, California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation and the California Highway Patrol.

Both Kern County Sherriff ’s Sergeant Marc Huings and Chief Whiting presented calls for service information as well as detailed statistics regarding criminal activities on the Westside in the previous year. All law enforcement representatives present stressed the need for citizen cooperation and assistance in performing their jobs.

Taft Planning Commission Approves Letter to Alcohol Beverage Control Board on Buckolies Request for New Liquor License

By Jerry Livingston J.D. Jerry.Taft.Independent@gmail.com The Taft Planning Commission at its meeting Wednesday evening unanimously approved a letter to the California Alcohol, Beverage Control Board recommending restrictions be placed on the operations of Buckolie’s Bar and Grill.

The letter is a response by the planning commission to the public posting of an Application for Ownership Change that invites public comment on the proposed change of ownership of the liquor license.

City Planning Director Mark Staples told the commission that the letter was not a recommendation by the commission to deny a license to Buckolies, located at 621 Center Street, but that that the intent was to make the restaurant conform to the same standards of operation as other business on Center Street.

Numerous complaints had been made to the city and planning commission members about the operation of the bar and grill, and the letter, drafted by Staples and the city attorney was a way to address the complaints.

Taft Police Chief Ed Whiting adressed the Planning Commission and infomed the commission that he had also written a letter to the ABC about his concerns and past conduct of the restaurant.

According to the ABC, the restaurant had no valid liquor license on the night of Burell’s death, and had been operating without a license since June 16th.

No explanation was given for the closure. No one was charged in the death of Burrell.

According to local law enforcement officials, the ABC is currently investigating prior operations of the restaurant including the purchase of alcohol for resale at Buckolies while the bar had no valid license.

Bars, restaurants and other alcohol resellers are required by law to purchase alcohol products from licensed wholesale distributors.

TUHS FFA Attend Regional Leadership Boot Camp

Taft College Prepares for the Launch of the Fall 2014 Semester Taft College will welcome the fall 2014 semester on Monday, August 25 with students following the new Steps to Success program launched by the college last spring. The program is Taft College’s response to a law passed last year as part of the Student Success Act co-authored by Senator Carol Lui (D – La Canada Flintridge).

The Steps to Success at Taft College includes four components which increase the likelihood that a student will successfully complete their academic goals. These components are Step 1 – Completion of an online orientation; Step 2 - Assessment/Placement in math and English; and Step 3 - Meeting with a counselor or participating in a Counseling Workshop.

Step 4 involves setting educational goals. Students are expected to develop a Comprehensive Educational Plan after completing 15 units. Research indicates that students who set educational goals and enroll in classes which support those goals are more likely to achieve their goals in a timely manner.

By following the Steps to Success, students can reduce the time needed to complete their degree, and also reduce the cost of taking courses which do not support their academic goal.

This past Saturday and Sunday ten students from Taft FFA attended the San Joaquin Region FFA Leadership Boot Camp.

Students participated in a variety of leadership activities targeted at improving their teamwork and communication skills.

Activities also included refection on their personal goals for the year as well as the goals set for the Taft FFA chapter and its membership at the officer team leadership training held earlier in the summer. The event was hosted at Sicon near Springville California and put on by students leaders in this year’s San Joaquin Region FFA Officer Team.

Liberty Under Fire The CIA Spies on the U.S. Senate. Is there nobody safe from spying?

Harold Pease, Ph. D In yet another emerging scary scandal, not well publicized, the CIA recently acknowledged that it “had secretly searched Senate computer files related to an investigation of the agency’s Bush-era harsh interrogation program.” Searched Senate computer files!!! Good grief, that is our own government that they spied on!! Is there nobody safe from spying???

Their admission that they had lied for several months when accused of having done so and their apology to the senators to whom they had spied, does not make such acceptable. They readily placed the blame on three lower level technology staff members who, they said, “demonstrated a lack of candor” when doing so. Is there no punishment?

Left out of their “limp” apology is who directed them to spy on the Senate in the first place? Also minimized by existing coverage is the fact that this wasn’t just any group of U.S. Senators that the CIA decided to spy on, it was the Senate Intelligence Committee, charged with overseeing all spying sponsored by our government. In effect, the CIA was spying on its congressional boss.

The loudest complainant, and the one to take to the Senate floor to blast the unruly organization of lifting material from committee computers, was the Senate Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein. Six months ago, Feinstein insisted that the CIA removed from committee computers information that cast the agency’s post-9/11 interrogation tactics in a harsh and negative light, this presumably to avoid embarrassment and legal entanglements. Meddling with the Oversight Committee’s findings effectively tramples on the constitutional separation of powers between the executive and legislative branches of government and, if not checked, destroys that balance.

What caused the CIA to spy on its own government was that the Senate was investigating them and about to release its incriminating findings. Despite

CIA interference the Committee voted 11-3 to release a 431-page summary of its four-year 6,200 page, $40 million scathing indictment. Just why the complete document will remain classified, and thus secret, has not been disclosed but it can be assumed that the released version is the sanitized version. As a result the extent of the Bush-era CIA torture practice continues into the Obama-era and CIA misdeeds will not come to light fully until those responsible are safely out of danger of prosecution. With respect to the part that remains classified Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein threatened, “If someone distributed any part of this classified report, they broke the law and should be prosecuted.” Perhaps she should be reminded that secrecy and free government are incompatible.

The part released concluded “that the CIA’s use of brutal interrogation measures did not produce valuable intelligence and that the agency repeatedly misled government officials about the severity and success of the program.” Feinstein called the torture practice shocking, “The report exposes brutality that stands in stark contrast to our values as a nation. It chronicles a stain on our history that must never again be allowed to happen,” she said. She was referring to the CIA’s use of water-boarding and other harsh tactics against dozens of terrorism suspects.

Maine Senator Angus King, an independent on the Committee, called the practice torture. “I don’t have any doubts on that fact. It’s a pretty hard read. It’s very disappointing.” But he was especially bothered by the amount of inaccurate statements emanating from the CIA that influenced the president and congress for years. He might have included the mainstream media and the falsehoods that will continue for decades in our history textbooks until everything is declassified and scrutinized by historians.

What appears clear is that the CIA used interrogation methods reportedly not approved by the Justice Department, that the agency evaded congressional oversight, and that the agency self-empowered itself as though independent and accountable to only itself. Also, clear is that the extent of its wrongdoing will remain hidden and classified so that no one is punished. This is the sanitized version.

But back to our original concern, apparently the CIA is so brazen that it spies on, and removes

evidence from, the Senate Intelligence Committee charged with its oversight. Amazingly this to the point that they too, knowing more than any other organization the power and danger of the way-ward child, participated in keeping a part of the organizations wrong doings secret. One wonders if the U.S. Senate is that independent of the CIA, especially when this organization receives little more than a verbal retribution for spying and lifting evidence on it, an activity that should be criminal.
