The Kern County Fair is partnering with Houchin Community Blood Bank for a second annual Pint for a Pass Blood Drive, August 19 to September 11, 2013. “The passes were wildly successful with donors last year, increasing blood supplies at a time when inventories are traditionally low” said Carola Enriquez, Director of Community Development. “It is great to partner with the blood bank to help them fill their need, and to give people in our community an opportunity to come to the Kern County Fair. Working with the community is important to us,” according to Mike Olcott, CEO of the Kern County Fair.

Blood donors will receive a free pass to the Kern County Fair during the drive, which is expected to reach 4,000 citizens. There will also be a prize drawing for one “Gift Pack” of 4 fair admissions and 4 unlimited carnival wristbands. Free admission passes and drawing slips will be available on most mobile drives scheduled during the drive, as well as at both donor centers: 11515 Bolthouse Drive and 5901 Truxtun Avenue in Bakersfield.

“The opportunity to attend the much loved Great Kern County Fair for free is proving very popular with donors scheduling appointments. As word of the Pint for a Pint partnership spreads we anticipate another excellent turn out for this drive, particularly among new and occasional donors”, added Enriquez.

A fair themed public social event on Monday, August 26 from 4-7 pm will feature two Kern County Fair food favorites for blood donors: Bakersfield DeMolay corn dogs, and Southern Sierra Council - Boy Scouts of America baked potatoes with all the trimmings. Food will be available beginning at 4:00 pm while supplies last, at the Bolthouse Donor Center, 11515 Bolthouse Drive, Bakersfield.

The Truxtun Donor Center is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 am to 6 pm, Thursday from 11 am to 8 pm and Saturday 7 am to 1 pm. The Bolthouse Donor Center is open Monday and Wednesday 11 am to 7 pm, and Tuesday and Thursday from 7 am to 3 pm. It is closed Friday and Saturday. Both centers are closed on Sunday. Corbin Bernsen is currently on “Psych” on the USA Network. Showtimes are 4 and 8pm. Tickets are now on sale for only $8.00. This is one of many great events that will help the Fox get their digital upgrade.

The Taft Fox Theatre Kickstarter program needs to raise the $40,000 for the down payment on the Digital upgrade is still going strong. There are 16 days left to donate to keep the Fox open. If you do want to donate go www.kickstarter.com. You can also follow the program on Facebook group, Taft Fox Theater- Keep Our Legacy Alive!

I have been promoting the Taft Fox Kickstarter program since it has began. I have been contacted by several people with questions and concerns about the Fox. Kickstarter in everyway appears to be a good safe way to raise money. If you do not want to use kickstarter you can drop off checks at the Fox. If there is not enough money to reach the $40,000 your card will not be charged. If you wrote a check it will be returned.

There are several fundraisers in the works to save the Fox. On September 14th the Fox will show the movie 25 Hill. The Filmmaker Corbin Bernsen will be at both showings at 4 and 8pm. Tickets are now on sale for only $8.00. Several parts on the movie 25 Hill were filmed n Taft.

The Taft Fox sold over 16,000 tickets last year. The Fox has nine employees. The Fox is not here to make someone rich. It is here for our entertainment. It is here to get people to go down to historic downtown Taft.

It is one of the nicest buildings in Kern County and I would hate to see it empty.

When people go to Bakersfield, most of them make a day of it. They head over and have lunch, go clothes shopping, maybe get their hair done, go to Home Depot, maybe Bed Bath and Beyond, if they have enough time, eat dinner, watch a movie, maybe have a frozen yogurt then head back to Taft. We need to keep that money here in Taft. Eat lunch at Pizza Factory, shop at Personal Style, get their hair done at Bangs and Tangles, go to True Value, have a snack at Get Your Sweet On , have dinner at Asian Experience, watch a movie at the Fox, and finish the night bowling at West Side lanes. These tax dollars will be used for our Police, Fire, Ambulance, Roads, lights, and much more in TAFT. During the March Cruise Night there were people everywhere. Several hundred of them went to the Fox to see Iron Man 3. You can see several people looking around at Black Gold, Eye Kandi, Olds School, and other downtown businesses before going to the Fox. During several dinners out in Taft I’ve seen the same people at the Fox after dinner.

Personally I love the Fox. I have great memories like everyone else of the Fox. It employs people, helps Taft but in my opinion the # 1 reason we need the Fox is for our kids. Some kids get in trouble when they are bored.

Besides the Fox our kids only have Parks, Bowling Alley, Natatorium in the summer, Rec activities, sports, and Skate Park. Depending on what kids are into the Fox might be the only thing they like to do on the weekends.

I see several of the same kids there every weekend.

Please log on to Kickstarter today and make a donation. Do not let the Fox go. Do not let it be just a great memory like the Skate Escape, old Rec Center, and so many other places. If you cannot afford to make a donation please help with one of the other events that are being planned. Remember the Fox is open 7 days a week.

Shows are only $5.00 before 6pm. Slices of Domino’s Pizza are only $1.00 on Friday and Saturday Nights. Hot Dogs are only $1.25 every night. The Taft Fox Theatre is “The Place to Go!”

By Assemblyman Tim Donnelly Earlier this week, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill into law that will allow, after Jan. 1, 2014, any K-12 student who identifies his or her gender as something opposite of what his actual sex is access to any bathrooms, locker rooms and sports teams.

Allowing teenage boys and girls in the same locker room, showering side by side, is a bad idea. In fact, AB 1266 is a recipe for disaster.

This will take the normal hormonal battles raging inside every teenager and pour gasoline onto those simmering coals.

The right to privacy enjoyed by every student will be replaced by the right to be ogled.

No one seems to be able to explain how this new law helps anyone, and opposition is hitting its pinnacle as many parents are just finding out about it. My 13- and 16-year-old boys were horrified at the idea of sharing a bathroom and locker room with a member of the opposite sex, after having discussed AB 1266 with them.

While trying to address a concern of less than 2 percent of the population, California is now forcibly violating the rights of the other 98 percent. Many of the parents I have heard from within the last few days have literally pulled their kids out of public schools and have enrolled them in homeschool and private school programs. My boys, who went back to the public school after many years away, will not be returning.

And as a result, the decline in attendance and enrollment is likely to negatively impact K-12 public school funding given a good portion of it comes from the ADA federal grant that pays the schools proportionally for attendance.

It is completely unreasonable to expect teenagers, who are uncomfortable with themselves at this age, to accept this level of privacy invasion. After all, in the Capitol building, not only do they not allow men in the women’s bathroom, the women must enter a code to access their restrooms.

A Los Angeles Times article stated recently that, “the Assembly has a bathroom designated as gender-neutral, but it’s inconveniently in the basement of the Capitol.”

Ironically, the same politicians who want to end discrimination have actually discriminated against the majority of people who are uncomfortable with the provisions of AB 1266.

Some of my most pressing questions are: What are the long-term repercussions of this measure? Will some kids be too embarrassed to use the bathroom or locker rooms, knowing that a member of the opposite sex could enter any time?

Could this create unneeded anxiety with students, creating a massive learning distraction? Will creating gender neutral facilities increase the likelihood of a sexual assault on campus?

Every way you analyze this bill, I can only conclude that its provisions are a bad idea. In a state competing for the bottom three spots in educational achievement, this is nothing more than a massive distraction and will only detract from students’ education.

It is likely to hurt the very people it purports to help. Certainly, there is a more sensitive way to address their concerns individually as opposed to turning every other student’s life upside down.

When I was in high school, we had a girl on our varsity soccer team. In every way, she proved she was not only my equal on that team, but my better. She was an amazing person who earned my respect, and we eventually became close friends.

She taught me how to dig deeper, work harder and improve my game and was also the key to my earning the final spot on the highly competitive varsity team the next fall. But she did not shower with the boys or use the boys’ bathroom.

That would have made no sense then, and it makes even less sense now.

Some things should be left to the discretion of the adults on-site to come up with a private accommodations for the few, rather than public humiliation for the many.

Transgender Activist Protests Religion in School on First Day of Classes, But Not Without Opposition Brian McIlroy of East Los Angeles stood at the corner of Warren and 6th Streets in Taft today to protest religion in public schools on the first day of classes following summer vacation.

But he was not the only protester.

McIlroy, a former Taftian who now lives in East Los Angeles, held up a hand lettered sign in front of Roosevelt school that read, “Keep Prayer and ‘god’ out of school, It’s the law. Religion has no place in school. FFRF.com” The (FFRF) Freedom From Religion Foundation website says that FFRF is a non-profit that organization that works to educate the public on matters relating to nontheism, (atheism) and to promote the constitutional principle of separation between church and state.

McIlroy said that he was protesting religion in public schools, and that he supported a new state law signed by the governor last week that allows transgendered children to choose the bathroom that they would feel most comfortable using. Governor Jerry Brown signed the new law on August 12th giving transgender students in public schools the right to use whichever restroom or locker facilities they desire, and to decide whether they will participate in boys or girls sports.

The law will impact an estimated 6.2 million students in the state’s k-12 public schools. The new law’s supporters insist the law is necessary to protect transgender students from confusion, bullying, and discrimination.

Taft parent Becky Sharp joined in the protest with her own sign in opposition to McIlroy and was cheered by drivers that honked their horns.

Sharp was bothered by the protester and his message when she brought her daughter to school. She held her own hand lettered protest sign which read a bible verse, “For where two or three are gathered in my [ Jesus] name, I am there also,” Matthew 18:20.

Sharp said that McIlroy was initially rude to her, but that she was not bothered as she stood about 20 feet from

Taft Police Chief Ed Whiting observed the protestors from a distance and said that there was no problem with the protestors.

Prayer in Public Schools; Yes or No?

By The Rev. Heather Mueller I am an Episcopal Priest serving a church and providing pastoral care for the members of my congregation. I believe most enthusiastically in the power and efficacy of prayer!

Prayer is a very important part of my life and my ministry. In fact, I would even say that when a person lives their life according to God’s will and follows in the footsteps of Jesus their lives can be considered a prayer. Prayer in my way of thinking is like a dance tying together and remaining in balance with the spiritual world and the physical world. It is a constant activity in life when we are in balance and in a loving place with our actions and our energies.

This definition of prayer will affirm the truth that prayer is taking place at all times. When a student lives a life of integrity and honesty they are a living prayer. So in this way there is and always will be prayer in the public schools. It is also true that when a student is about to face a difficult moment it is only natural that they would focus and concentrate so as to meet the challenge with strength and confidence. This in my definition is a prayer.

Another way of looking at the issue could be described in this way. If we think simplistically about human life we can see three important parts to our lives.

We have our physical needs and these are met by parents or guardians as they provide food, clothes, homes and doctor care when needed.

The second part of a student’s life is the educational or mental needs which need to be met. This is the role of schools and families to teach about human life. Our children need to learn about life on this planet, past and present.

They need to be prepared to be productive citizens in this world and trained so that they can support themselves and their families, if that is what lies in their future. The schools are responsible for this part of a student’s life.

I do believe that there is a great need to learn, in school, about the various religions of the world. I believe the Bible should be studied along with the Qur’an, and other sacred texts. It is an important way to bring understanding of other people and cultures into the educational system. It is with a greater understanding that respect and tolerance can come about. In this pluralistic world tolerance is of utmost importance, now, and as we move forward into our future!!

Furthermore, the other literature which is read in school is much more meaningful if a student has an understanding of the religions in the world. How can we read Shakespeare meaningfully without knowing about the Biblical references?

The spiritual needs in a child’s life are meant to be met by families and religious institutions. The principles of religion--prayer, love, peace, justice, faith--are those values which are learned by children as they observe the people around them. They will not learn these values by a prayer/words piped over the intercom. It is not practical either. If there is a prayer with a Christian orientation then there needs to be a Jewish one and then a Muslim one, a Hindu one and perhaps a Buddhist Chant and etc.

I believe in the separation of Church and State. The Founders of our country had seen and experienced the lack of religious freedom in other places. They were very wise to establish the “Wall of Separation.” In the pages of history we read about the results of many abuses of power over people when a religious system is forced. The way a person relates to God and what religious system they want to ascribe to is a choice. He was arrested, beaten and thrown into jail. This is a result of the lack of religious freedom.

I believe that many of our young people are not getting the religious training that they need in these days. It is not the responsibility of the schools to provide this. The culture is more and more secular, and more and more activities required of students conflict with the traditional days of worship.

It is the responsibility of the families and the religious institutions to explore ways to make the messages of faith relevant to the young people today.

We know that God is alive and well and we know that every human is born with a desire to be connected with the spirit of God and be accepted, to love and be loved by others.

It is incumbent on the religious institutions and the families to find ways to meet the spiritual needs of the students in our community and under our care.

Adams Street Demo: Economic Development Starts at Home

By Joan Raymond After months of anticipation, the Economic Development Strategy Report was presented at the Taft City Council Meeting for adoption this past Monday evening.

The Strategy laid out a specific plan bringing everyone together working towards a common goal of developing and implementing policies, programs, and activities, encouraging new businesses, expanding and retaining existing businesses, creating new jobs, and enhancing the quality of life for the residents of Taft.

In January 2012 the Greater Taft Economic Development Authority entered into a contract with The Office of Community and Economic at California State University, Fresno to develop a community-based economic development strategy for the City of Taft. An Advisory Committee representing several groups including students, senior citizens, retail and industrial businesses, Taft College, Kern County, and the Chamber of Commerce, formed and met over the course of eight months.

Experts from around the state comprising of a variety of sectors gave presentations to the Advisory Committee recommending a series of steps with projected completion dates in five different areas. Craig Jones, Taft City Manager, said the steps are like “a simplified road map. A document we can reflect on and use to check our progress.”

Along with others, three main groups will work together on these steps keeping each other accountable on a monthly basis – The City of Taft, the Taft Chamber of Commerce, and Taft Community College. Jones said, “It’s good to see the different groups working together. The plan was put together by an independent party with a projected outcome. We all agreed to follow the plan.”

Dr. Kathy Orrin, Executive Director, of the Taft District Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau echoed Jones’ feeling about everyone working together.

“The City and the Chamber must have the same information,” Orrin said. “For example, people come to both of us asking questions about starting a business. The City handles the legal side – the licensing for instance. Many times the City refers people to the Chamber and we give them information on traffic patterns and habits of the residents.”

When people inquire about vacant buildings for new business sites, this shared information better serves everyone involved, making both the Chamber and the City’s jobs easier, she added.

the coming together of local businesses and private industry.”

She said economic development depends on giving people the skill sets employers are looking for. People need to be qualified beyond entry-level jobs. She mentioned the role of the college was to “build progress to meet those needs.”

Along with partnering with the school district and the community college, another goal is to market Taft to perspective developers, as well as residents, businesses and tourists. Kathy Orrin said Taft has a lot of amenities but not enough people know about them. She added tourists come from “around the world to visit the oil museum because it’s the most complete depiction of the oil industry”. She mentioned although the city is about two hours driving distance to several destination spots like Los Angeles, the coast, and the mountains she wants to see Taft become a destination spot also. “We won’t have a town unless we have economic development.”

Developing a business retention and expansion program is also on the “road map”. Craig Jones mentioned the goal of visiting five businesses each month, asking questions and offering free assistance to business owners. Jones said helping new and established owners create business plans would be part of the program, helping them map out business goals and strategies.

Bart Hill, Vice President/Area Manager of United Security Bank, said “We need to take care of the existing businesses first and then attract new ones.”

As part of the Strategy, Dr. Orrin, Dr. Maloney, and Craig Jones, along with Debra Elliot, Enterprise Zone Manager for the City of Taft, plan to meet face-to-face monthly sharing progress on their assigned tasks. Then, every six months the ad-hoc committee will meet for updates. This assures accountability for everyone, plus gives a chance for individuals to voice questions and/or concerns about the progress.

WEST SIDE URGENT CARE

Contractors take down a condemned two-story apartment complex on Adams Street in Ford City on Friday. The building was condemned and slated for demolition after 4th District Supervisor David Couch sought approval from the Kern County Board of Supervisors. Couch has taken an aggressive stand against unsafe, abandoned and blighted structures in the county portions of Taft. Working with city officials, Couch has set out to assist the city with the clean-up, demolition and redevelopment of the blighted areas surrounding the city, especially the entry ways to Taft. Couch has already helped remove more than a dozen structures in Ford City and South Taft.

When asked about the Strategy and how it will affect Taft in the next two to five years, all of them shared similar responses.

Hill said, “Taft is a wonderful community. Nice, sincere, hardworking people. I see nothing but good from this. This group cares so much – they’re making it happen.”

City Manager, Craig Jones said he sees “…increasing opportunities and new businesses, plus the probability that existing businesses will still be here. The quality of life will improve, along with the tax revenue.”

Dr. Maloney commented “within a couple of years we will see real progress as a result of the Strategy.” She added patience is important and for people to stay hopeful.

Chamber Executive Director, Kathy Orrin summed it up, “This is exciting. Being here, knowing we have good friends [working together] and a good town.” Because of the Strategy, she added, “We are poised to be a great town.”

Meet New Taft High School Teacher Cheryl McGathey

Taft College Receives Approval To Rename Emmons Park To Cougar Court Dr. Dena Maloney, Superintendent/President of Taft College introduces staff and student from Taft College on Tuesday night at the Taft City Council Meeting. The council approved a request from the college to rename Emmons Park Drive to Cougar Court. The council approved the name change after a presentation by Dr. Maloney.

Cheryl McGathey has impeccable timing. The new foods teacher at Taft Union High School moved to Bakersfield in June when her husband, a design engineer, relocated from Ohio. That was when Taft foods teacher Lynn Bramham left the high school to move with her relocating husband.

Mrs. McGathey is the only new teacher hired at Taft High this year. The school did not replace retiring art teacher Bob Peterson or counselor Claude Bradford.

Mrs. McGathey brings 25 years of experience to the job and a strong emphasis on nutrition and consumer education. Besides teaching students how to cook, she will teach them how to shop and introduce them to nutritious, low-calorie foods.

She was born in Ohio and graduated from Highland High School in Granger Township. Her three children also graduated from Highland High. As a student, she worked on the yearbook, and was in the drama club, the Little Sis Club (a spirit and support club for the wrestling team), and the Future Teachers of America. She hopes to one day start a chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America here.

She earned her BS degree in Family and Consumer Sciences at Ohio University and her MA in special education at Ashland University in Ohio.

She has a lifelong teaching credential in Ohio and spent her life teaching there until this year.

She has been married to Paul McGathey for one year in a Brady Bunch empty nest scenario. Her three children and his four children are all grown and living in Ohio or North Carolina.

Liberty Under Fire

“Fast and Furious,” Government Gun Running Scandal Returns

By Dr. Harold Pease Reuters reported last Saturday, August 17, 2013, “Nine men killed in Mexican drug war hotspot.” This is not new news. The day before, “eight people were found killed” and placed in a mass grave. Such happens frequently in a country where drug wars have resulted in the death of more than 70,000 people “between 2006 and 2012, and more than 6,000 have been killed since President Enrique Pena Nieto took office in December.

What is especially disturbing is that our government may have been involved with some of these murders. CBS News reported, August 14, of this month, “That three more weapons from Fast and Furious have turned up at violent crime scenes in Mexico.”

Fast and Furious suspect Uriel Patino purchased two in “May and July of 2010. Sean Steward purchased a third,” all traced to “the Lone Wolf gun shop in Glendale, Arizona.” Just a few weeks ago, Luis Lucio Rosales Astorga, “a Mexican police chief and his bodyguard were killed by cartel members using Fast and Furious guns.”

Some may have forgotten the “Fast and Furious” scandal of 2010 in the flurry of new Barack Obama Administration scandals of late Spring, so a review might be necessary. Imagine being willing to do anything to destroy the Second Amendment to the U. S. Constitution. Since Americans will not willingly do so, imagine someone in power plotting to create the rationale that would turn most reasonable people against these rights.

Evidence of such surfaced two years ago in the form of an email from a Justice Department agent that strongly indicated that the government’s “Operation Fast and Furious” was designed to do just that. Arizona U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke, charged with executing the “Operation Fast and Furious,” boasted to a colleague of the operation’s propaganda value, presumably to vilify gun shows. It read: “Some of these weapons bought by these clowns in Arizona have been directly traced to murders of elected officials in Mexico by the cartels, so Katie-bar-the-door when we unveil this baby” (“Will Holder’s Watergate Become Obama’s Waterloo?” Americas 1st Freedom, April 2012). They knew precisely what they could do with the propaganda value of their sales—destroy the gun shows.

Seemingly the intent was for the government, through the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms Administration (ATF), to secretly sell illegal guns to the Mexican drug cartels, and then blame those sales on U.S. gun shows to discredit them. The administration, especially Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, had argued that 90% of the guns used by Mexican drug cartels had come from gun shows in the United States. The ATF gun sales, if undetected, would provide the government rationale

and support to close down the gun shows making it more difficult for citizens to obtain a firearm. The story appears to be full of government intrigue, lies, conspiracy, and the murder of hundreds of Mexican citizens and an American Border Patrol Agent, Brian Terry.

The transfer of the illegal weapons was done without consulting U.S. law officers outside ATF or the Mexican authorities.

The government would have succeeded with the scheme were not some of the illegal firearms found at the scene of murdered Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, one of which was actually the instrument of his death.

Wayne La Pierre, Executive Vice President of the NRA, best expressed the seriousness of this illegal operation, apart from defrauding Americans of their constitutional gun rights, when he wrote. “In that ‘gun-walking’ operation, Obama administration operatives encouraged, bankrolled, and oversaw repeated felonies at gun stores and at border crossings with criminals smuggling at least 1,700 firearms into Mexican drug-fueled criminal commerce.” Regular citizens, doing the same thing would be serving time.

The e-mail in question was a part of the 6,000 documents received from the 80,000 requested of the Justice Department by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform headed by Darrell Issa. The Justice Department yet refuses to honor a three-year request for the other 74,000 documents requested.

What has been released reportedly proves that U.S. gun shows were not the source of cartel firepower, as this administration had repeatedly contended, the ATF was, and that Holder intentionally lied when he told Congress he had heard about “Fast and Furious” from the media, as did other Americans.

“One Justice Department official has claimed his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination and refused to testify,” elevating anticipation that, so far, we may have seen only the tip of the iceberg.

The Justice Department has acknowledged encouraging gun stores in the U.S. to sell weapons to purchasers who trafficked them to Mexican drug cartels but still refuses to release some 74,000 documents with respect to the scandal. Such refusal led to “a bipartisan vote in June 2012 to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress. The House Oversight Committee is suing for release of the material” so there will be more to come on this story. Meanwhile there will be more killing in Mexico from the 1,400 to 1,700 guns given the drug cartels by our government.

Miller Time Hi Everyone, It is certainly some different times that we are living in.

We are somewhat insulated from some of the events that are happening around our beautiful nation but it affects us all none the less. The Boston tragedy, the West, Texas disaster, Newtown, the flooding on the Mississippi, the tornadoes that roar through the heartland of America, the drought we are going through, the stock market going through the roof, the price of gas, the question of what is a marriage, and the craziness that our elected officials are putting us through.

We are we heading somewhere but from my perspective I’m glad that I am in my golden years, so that I won’t have to put up with it much longer because it seems to be a downward trend to me and I feel that I can’t do much to stop it..

Who among us would have ever guessed that two young men who came to this country under the guise of political persecution and become citizens and enjoyed all the freedoms and opportunities that this great country has to offer; who would think that they would strap on a couple of back packs and blow up innocent victims because of their twisted take on religious ideology. It is like having a sleeper cell living among us waiting to strike; it scares the crap out of me.

Of course, them doing that to us here on the Westside is more than remote; it makes me shiver that our brethren in the larger cities will be their targets. Will terrorism happen again, probably. I just finished watching “Act of Valor” a motion picture about Seal Team missions they take against terrorist groups. The final scene is that of

them stopping a group of suicide bombers with suicide vests from crossing our border to strike deep in America.

With our open borders, nothing is impossible. It is not just farm workers coming here to make a living but we have gang bangers, terrorists, and medical undesirables wanting to live among us and work to destroy everything this nation is about. It seems that we are paralyzed in some ways to act because everyone has their rights accept those that become the victims and for them it is too late.

The is no legislation that could have stopped Newton.

There is no legislation that could have stopped Aurora, Colorado, or the shooting of the congresswoman in Tucson or the young man with a knife who slashed twenty people . All those communities had laws and gun laws in place.

What we couldn’t do was stop the plotting of a deranged individual sitting in their room thinking that the world is so against them that they have to go kill a bunch of people to ease their pain. If not with a pistol, a rifle, or a knife, why not go on the internet and learn how to build a pressure cooker bomb. How do they come up with these horrendous ideas ?? Video games ?? Internet ??

YouTube ?? The media ?? Movies ?? Are they copycats or are they looking for the bigger, better way to create death and destruction ?? How can anyone ever in a million years think that someone would walk into a kindergarten class and slaughter 20 innocent children that had nothing to do with the shooter to get the satisfaction he was looking for ??

Could anyone have perceived that this was coming; maybe going Postal on adults, but 5 yr olds ?? Could legislation have stopped him ?? Taking away all the rights of gun ownership of his mother, would it have stopped him from using some other method to satisfy his madness ?? We’ll never know. I don’t have the answers that you are looking for because it is so far out of the realm of my world, my thinking, my whole being.

I know in my heart that knee jerk reaction is not the answer. Without a calm discourse, we will only divide ourselves and not unite to solve the problems we face. We cannot legislate our way out of all social ills and injustices that come along. Taking away our guns I know is not the

answer because there are far too many of them out there.

All this knee jerk stuff has sold more guns and ammo in the past four months probably at any time in our history.

There is not enough space here for my words to make any difference to stop this madness. It just stuns me that we are the freest nation in the world, with the most opportunities for you to be anyone you want to be. We don’t care about your creed, race, or religion; we are all created equal under God but we have close to a million people incarcerated that choose to rob, kill, maim, and try to destroy our way of life. Where as a nation, a state, a county, and city, where did we go wrong ??

It’s a million little things that happen every day, like spitting on the sidewalk, speeding on the highway, letting you kids watch ‘R’ rated movies, the profanity we hear in music, the rush to legalize drugs, the shabby way people dress for special occasions, the rush to judgment on all things.

But there are the good things, the nice things that people do, the proper way to act and raise kids, the people who volunteer and give back to their communities, the generous giving when we share in the grief of others as they move to rebuild their lives from natural and manmade disasters. It is just that the worst in us gets the headlines while the best in us doesn’t always.

My example of this was an article in a not-our-newspaper that was about the couple who died from the deranged LA killer who was killed in a shootout in Big Bear Lake and they showed the killers picture not theirs. That is what these sickoo’s want in many cases, that people will finally know who they are.

Sorry, but there were some things I needed to say. Taft is still with all our warts a great place to live, work, play, and learn. You never know when events around the world will come here to roost, but we need to be prepared. We had our skirmish with the Taft High shooting, I hope that is close that we will ever get. Say a prayer for your love ones, then say one for the rest of us. It certainly can’t hurt.
