Welcome Back Taft Taxi Service The 1st Friday Cruise Night last weekend had a great crowd. It was cool seeing the people that did dress like the 1950’s. If you had not heard Big Sax, you need too. Thanks to the Businesses that were open, Personal Style, Victoria’s Antiques, Mi Casita, Pizza Factory, Acme Jewelry, Black Gold Deli, Jack’s Flower Shop, Ong’s Café, RS Family Thrift, KC Photo, and Asian Experience. The Taft Lions Club and RS Family Thrift were also serving up amazing food. Get Your Sweet on was serving their great Ice Cream as fast as they could. Black Gold Brewery had a Beer Garden in the 5th Street Plaza and there were lots of people hanging out socializing in the Plaza. The old Dodge Lot and Yates Car Wash lot were both packed with people. Dusty and Paul’s Garage was also a Hot Spot that night. I hope everyone got some breads and jelly’s from Sharon’s Jams and Jelly’s booth inside Personal Style. If you didn’t make sure you stop by next time. The next 1st Friday Cruise Night is October 3rd, so save the date. Bring the entire family down for a fantastic night. The weather should be great. The Wildcats are also at home that night. I’m not sure if this will help or hurt Cruise Night. Either way you cannot say there is nothing to do in Taft.

This year there will be at least two Haunted Houses in Taft for Halloween. The Rec is having theirs in the Lincoln Jr. High Basement. I’m not sure of the days it will run but they had a great Haunted House last year in the old Skate Escape.

Even without setting up a Haunted House that basement is very scary, so this is going to be an amazing Haunted House.

The Taft Lions Club is having their Annual Haunted House at 2nd and Main Street. Their Haunted House will run from October 27th-31st. They hope to have 13 different rooms. They are looking for volunteers to help either build or work at the Haunted House. If you would like to have your own room in the Haunted House you will be responsible for staffing your room all 5 nights. The Lions Haunted House is always outstanding. Contact Jamie Waldrop or Floyd Adams for more info. The Lions Club does so much for Taft but they can’t do anything if we do not support them. When these two Haunted Houses start, grab all the kids in the neighborhood and check them out.

If you have noticed while driving up Harrison Street lately there have been some much needed improvements to Art’s Corner. Art’s Corner is one of the oldest businesses in California. Taft residents Mike and Nichole Jackson are the great new owners of Art’s Corner. They are also in the process of opening T’s Taxi. They are currently getting all of their permits. The Taft Area Transit is an excellent service but does not run at night. T’s Taxi will be very popular in the evenings and nights, especially on the weekends. I thank the Jackson’s for their hard work to make the Westside even better.

This time next year we will be a few weeks or so away from Oildorado 2015. Taft will have a new Best Western open, several of the houses in Sandy Creek Estates should be complete, the dirt work has started for Taco Bell, we will have a Taxi Service, and who knows what else we will get. We already have the best Rec in the State and they keep improving, the best Jr. College, the safest town with the best Law Enforcement, the best Schools with Taft City Schools and Taft High, we have an outstanding City Council, County Fire Department, Hall Ambulance, Service Clubs, The Fort, The Oil Museum, Skydive Taft, Rails to Trails, Historic Downtown Taft, and the best, most caring, supportive people. We need to quit being negative and think positive.

These are just a few of Taft’s great things I mentioned. Shop here, eat here, watch movies here, support our kids. Stay Positive Taft!

Letter to the Editor Taft High School Hazing Incident A Serious Matter

The Taft Union High School District has been thrust in the spotlight due to recent incidents that can be categorized as hazing. It is a serious matter. Given the significance of the incident, and our preliminary information that it involved members of the football team, we believed it was best to cancel a non-league game in the interest of student safety and well-being, which is our priority. We are continuing to gather information and will take additional appropriate steps to address these incidents. As we move forward, it is equally important that we address the broader problem of hazing and the fact that it continues. Perhaps it continues because an unwritten and age-old code of silence exists not only in Taft, but in society in general, that teaches our children this type of conduct is acceptable. Whether one is actively involved in the hazing or is a silent witness, it is not. I have no doubt young men in these situations wrestle with participating in and with exposing hazing. But this code of silence keeps them from talking to adults who could help them put it in the proper perspective and prevent others from being victimized. As an educator, I am dedicated to giving our youth the tools to make the right decisions in these very difficult situations. Our children learn character not because we tell them about it or because they see it on television; they learn character from the actions of the individuals they respect and observe every day. They learn character from the unwritten and unspoken messages they receive from adults about what is important. Athletics, including football, is not just about the physical and technical parts of the sport. It is about leadership, discipline, teamwork and character. So as we move forward, my hope is to help lead our community in furthering the conversation about hazing and working to eliminate it from our schools, our community, and our culture.

Taft Police Investigating Suspicious Death as Homicide On September 10, 2014, at approximately 1:45 hours, Taft Police received a request to Check the Welfare of a family member they had not seen or heard from since Sunday, September 7, 2014.

Taft Police responded to 626 Lucard Street and entered the apartment to check the welfare of the subject. Upon opening the front door to the residence, the officer located the subject (a white male adult in his 40s) lying lifeless on the living room floor.

Due to the statements provided by the family members, a Search Warrant was obtained for the residence to search for evidence to determine the cause of death.

The identity of the subject is being withheld pending the positive identification by the coroner’s and until the cause of death is determined the Taft Police Department is handling this Suspicious Death as a Homicide.

Reservations are now being accepted for party rentals at the bowling alley in the new Recreation Center. Parties may take place on Friday evenings, Saturday or Sunday. Rental fees start at $100 for 2-lane rentals. Rental prices include shoes, balls and use of the party room.

West Side Health Care District Pursuing Ambitious Agenda Jerry Livingston J.D. Jerry.taft.independent@gmail.com When the Catholic Health Services (CHS) assumed control of Taft’s hospital it triggered a long period of redefining the mission and goals of the West Side Health Care District. Sometime after assuming control of the hospital, CHS came to the District requesting it subsidize the hospitals operations, a focus group met in 1998 to discuss the future of the hospital and decided not to comply with the request and CHS eventually closed the hospital’s doors in 2000.

Current Board President Eric Cooper recalled that the District was operating out of a “shoebox in the trunk of Randy Miller’s car” when he was recruited to become a member of the Board. According to Cooper, “one of our goals was to avoid losing the District’s funding source, the Local Area Formation Commission was looking for opportunities to consolidate or disband special districts in Kern County at that time.

Since then he has seen the addition of a strong contingent of Board members who he believes brings a wide variety of skills and talents to the problems and opportunities of providing health care services on the Westside.

Cooper pointed out that as a current Taft City School District employee, Adele Ward brings significant construction and management experience in a public setting, while the District is planning the expansion of the urgent care , Ginny Miller worked for the West Kern Water District bringing considerable experience in the operations of a special district, and Ray Hatch adds his experience from his time on the City Council as well as his time working for Berry Holding, add this talent to Terri Jordan’s experience in nursing and her long service on the Board and this reinvigorated District Board has Eric “embracing” his role as Board President and looking forward to expansion of health care service for communities on the Westside.

The opening of the Urgent Care facilities in 2004 in what were less than ideal conditions was the beginning of the Districts new vision for provision of Health Care services in Taft and the surrounding communities. Cooper recalled “It was a stroke of luck that the current Urgent Care building came with reacquisition of the old hospital site,” and the Urgent Care was able to move into better offices in 2010.

Last year the District took over ownership of the Urgent Care Facility and its expansion is the short term focus of the Board.

In an effort to continue the progress, the District Board met last month in a retreat designed to help them identify next steps.

The retreat was facilitated by Dr. William “Bill” Mathis, Ph.D. a management psychologist who heads the Mathis Group a consulting firm that works with various public sector entities to improve their management.

The Board retreat helped establish an historical timeline as a baseline for discussing future business opportunities for the District. Dr. Mathis stressed the need to establish a firm financial footing and discover other business opportunities that could help the Urgent Care operate in the black or at least at break even, this would allow the District to concentrate on other services to be offered that might require subsidies from the districts funding sources. Opportunities discussed included the

Urgent Care’s expansion into providing onsite medical services to the Municipal Community Correctional Facility and the need to explore providing an occupational medicine specialty for the nearly 20,000 local residents and the 10,000 to 15,000 oil workers working on the Westside. Currently these services are offered in Bakersfield which can take up an entire work day while a program offered in Taft could provide considerable time savings to Westside companies and their contractors.

Among the other matters discussed at the Board retreat were improvements to internal services, the need to replace the Urgent Care’s computer system with a newer, more efficient system, an upgrade to the districts antiquated accounting system so the Board can receive more meaningful reports, a revamp of the District’s web site to improve communications with the community, and to develop a consistent community relations program that connects the District with local health care professionals, the press and the community at large.

The next steps identified at the retreat included: restructuring the Board to be successful which includes the creation of appropriate subcommittees to work with staff on important projects, developing a strategic plan that would allow the district to both fund raise for important community projects and better explain the District’s vision to the communities on the Westside, and begin to identify the qualities needed in an Executive Director, who can remove some of the day to day management burdens from staff and Board members Cooper said.

The Board met Monday night as a follow-up to the retreat to begin implementing this vision.

First up was the approval of a search by staff to find and bring to the Board proposals to replace the current Urgent Care computer systems, this was followed by action to approve a contract to develop an updated web site that will provide up to date District news including agendas, board packets and minutes, as well as updated information on Board members along with links to the Urgent Care facilities web page.

These actions were followed up in closed session were the Board acted to direct Dr. Mathis to begin developing job descriptions for staff, help with identifying appropriate committee roles and assignments for the Board, including what is appropriate remuneration for Board members time, also approved was a search for an Administrative Analyst to assist staff in developing core accounting responsibilities and other management functions.

The Board also acted to hire an attorney familiar with health care district law to help guide their deliberations.

Cooper stressed that they are re-energized for the future and looking forward to developing the strategic plan, in consultation with a consultant hired to assist in that process.

The District has also contracted for the demolition of the old hospital and work will start soon so the District can build a larger Urgent Care facility with plans to develop a medical office facility on property owned by the District. As the owner of such a facility, Cooper believes that the District can provide a place suited to bring in much needed health care services, such as pediatric and geriatric care as well as other specialties the District identifies.

Cooper also stated that there is a need for a skilled nursing facility to serve families on the Westside and he would like to see the District supply this need at some future point.

“We were managing on a month to month basis and reacting to things as they came up,” Cooper said; “we are becoming a proactive organization looking to provide for the future of the Westside.”

Liberty Under Fire Miller Time Solution to the ISIS Beheading Practice on Americans

Pease Shortly after the 9/11 attacks on the United States I came across an article that claimed that our intelligence community had found a document from al-Qaeda arguing that Islamic war with the United States could be successful only by bringing us to them. The largely camel driven society could never win otherwise. As I recall it was called the “fly paper trap.” Once in their land they could bleed us gradually for many years in expensive, “no win” to us, wars. Destruction and death to them would feed recruitment needs as long as we were there. They would be fighting to keep their homeland free from us, everyone killed has brothers seeking vengeance who would join the team against us—doubling and tripling our enemies.

Whether this was intentionally the strategy initiated from the top or not, such has been precisely what happened. It is hard to argue that we won in Iraq when a third of the country is now under the control of ISIS and al-Qaeda is poised to return to Afghanistan after our 14year presence there. We also left behind much weaponry to their benefit. We have been greatly diminished in “blood and treasure.”

Now it seems that we are invited—even enticed—to return. Even the most pacifists of us are enraged by two blood-splattered video portrayals of beheadings of U.S. journalist, tauntingly placed on the Internet to invite our return. First James Foley on August 19, then Steven Joel Sotoff in early September, presumably killed by the same guy with the British accent. After the second beheading the killer then knelt by his next potential victim, David Cawthorne Haines a British citizen, and indicated that other coalition countries with the United States would also be victims if the bombing of ISIS does not stop.

President Barack Obama, with the most intelligence available to him of any person on earth, appears caught off guard, indecisive, even unconcerned with respect to the Caliphate formed during his watch and under his nose by ISIS the last few months. He should have seen it coming. Vice President Joe Biden, minced no words.

He said what the President should have said, and what the people needed to hear, after the second beheading, “They should know we will follow them to the Gates of Hell until they are brought to justice.” Still, the Democrats are not together on this one and rightfully so. This means reentering the Middle East in yet another no win war.

What is more horrifying is that only a year ago Republicans Senators Lindsey Graham and John McCain advocated teaming up with ISIS (what they then called the rebels) to defeat Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. We were secretly providing them with arms. They were the good guys. Now al-Assad, the guy who gassed his own people, has invited the United States to assist him in getting rid of ISIS in Syria and we may become allies. Even now Presently Obama is considering bombing ISIS in Syria. Nothing could be more upside down. The Middle East is a crag mire, a trap full of quicksand, one giant Islamic family feud of which we can never benefit. Outside of supporting Israel we should not again be caught in the flytrap.

Here is what we should do. We must stop the national insulting beheading of our journalists but without a new war. By now our intelligence knows, or soon will, the name of the Islamic murderer. Let us very publically offer a million dollars for proof of his demise. Raise this amount periodically, if need be, until even his friends will

Hi Everyone, It must have been a doosey of a weekend for yard sales this past weekend by the number of yard sale signs that were posted up and down Kern Street. The signs are getting louder in color and size. There was even one that was made out of card board that was three sided about 3 foot tall surrounding the street light at Sixth and Kern. The brightest colored ones were plastered on the wooden stop sign poles on 4th and 6th Streets. I stripped down all the ones that I could get. It is easy to pull down the ones on the stop signs, you just pull up and reach out and yank them off. The reason I do this and I encourage all of you to do the same, is that the people who put them up never come back and take them down. The city has an ordinance about posting signs on public utility poles that most yard sellers ignore. Our police department and code enforcement have bigger fish to fry than to go after these illegal signs, so in my small way I do it. Instead of waiting until the weekend is over to pull them down, as the yard sellers expect, I try to get them down before the weekend starts. I find that they are distracting, ugly, and just plain not acceptable by most people. Don’t get me wrong, I like going to yard sales and I have had a number of them over the years, but I go back out and take my signs down that day. I usually post them around my neighborhood after placing an ad in the Driller and the Independent. Most people who go to yard sales take the paper with them to mark off where they want to go so as to not waste time back tracking. They don’t go down to Kern Street to see what these illegal signs say. If you’re going to do a yard sale, please do, but remember you are making un-taxed cash, advertising is the cost of doing your sale, and be a good neighbor.

Taft has once again been invaded by the news media from Bakersfield. Unfortunately, it is not the kind of news that we like to neither brag about nor want to be talked about. The Superintendent of the City School District received his second DUI in less than a year, came out a couple of weeks ago.

He has now been put on paid administrative leave so that he may address the illness of alcoholism. It is so unfortunate that he has so publically embarrassed himself as well as the rest of the community. Apparently he has had drinking problem for some time; I just hope that it does not come about that he was drinking or drunk on the job. He was not in a school vehicle nor was he on the clock when he got the be tempted to remove him. In the meantime he becomes suspicious of even his closest comrades leading to contention from within. Nothing destroys the effectiveness of a group more than distrust. This also should discourage other would be heinous murders as we would do the same thing to them. If more is needed after this first step we can consider it then.

Give American Islamic groups, who have largely been strangely silent on this issue, an opportunity to show themselves equally horrified by this groups’ “convert or die” philosophy by encouraging them to speak out against and significantly help fund the amounts needed to remove those practicing violence in the name of their religion. This plan saves our “blood and treasure,” creates no new enemies and helps American Islamists show their support for freedom of all religions in this land.

Criminalize, then punish, any U.S. citizen funding or fighting for ISIS. Deny any foreign aid and/or trade preferences to countries supporting ISIS. Encourage free world countries to do the same with respect to their people. Isolate ISIS as we have North Korea. We have allowed ourselves to become the common enemy of the Islamic world. Without our physical presence there, they will return to fighting each other as they have for hundreds of years dissipating their own strength rather than ours.

DUI’s. Shoulda, woulda, coulda have something been done before this, I think it was up to him to have addressed this problem long ago. It is all too sad. Julie Graves an excellent teacher and administrator has taken over as interim and I think very highly of her and know she’ll do a great job for our schools and the children she cares so much for.

The other unwanted publicity is the hazing incident on the high school varsity football team that caused a game to be cancelled, a trip to the Rose Bowl cancelled, and coach to be suspended and again a town that is embarrassed by the actions of a few knot heads that don’t get that bullying is bullying no matter what you name it. I’m sure that the affected players would tell you how sorry they are and they didn’t mean any harm and that they were only trying to build team spirit, but sorry those kinds of tactics are from a bygone era. What they did is called hostile work environment in the adult world, but it holds true at TUHS. I commend the coaches that came forward when they found out, but I condemn the players that saw what was going on and did not stand up and be counted to protect the younger players that were being harassed. When you are on a team, it is one for all and all for one, you all pay the price. Big learning curve for them all. What was probably thought to be innocent horseplay turned out to embarrass themselves, their families, their school and team, and the community at large. Too bad for all of us.

Good news is also in the air. Taft native son and Sheriff ’s Deputy John Swearengin will not have to spend time behind bars for the very unfortunate accident that cost two innocent lives. He lives with this everyday and he has promised that he will be a good man, role model, and a supporter of his community for everyone to follow. He is already been that and more. My Korean War buddy and Purple Heart recipient Howard Minton and I as his guardian, will be flying to Washington DC as part of the Kern County Honor Fight program. The question is will I be able to keep up with him ?? I’m honored that he asked me to go. There have been a number of Taft Veterans that have already gone; we leave Sat Sept 20th at 6:30 am from Bakersfield; if you’re not doing anything come by and see him off.
