Last week after the Taft High Tennis Match, all of the Bakersfield Drillers Tennis Team headed to Pizza Factory. I spoke to several of these great girls on the Drillers Tennis Team, they all said they like the Taft High Tennis Courts, the Taft people, and they Love Pizza Factory. Thank you Pizza Factory for feeding the Wildcat Football Teams last week for their weekly meal. The meal did the Wildcats good because they looked amazing as they beat Golden Valley 47-7. Go Cats!

TUHS Starts School Year With New Administrator, Seven New Teachers

By James Carnal Stacey Stansberry is the director of education, technology and curricular innovation.

She defined that big title as “integrating technology into the way teachers teach and students learn.” That is the job she had been doing at the Kern County Superintendent of Schools for 47 school districts Stacey Stansberry for the past eight years. Before that, she spent 10 years teaching in the Rosedale Union School District. She also teaches at California State University, Bakersfield and an on-line class through Fresno Pacific University in Fresno.

She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in liberal studies and her masters in curriculum, instruction and education technology at CSUB. Born in Bakersfield 44 years ago, she graduated from Bakersfield High, where she was a member of the future leaders club and played clarinet in band. She said her coordination had not caught up with her 6-foot frame so she did not play high school sports.

Her husband, Rod, a landscaper, and she have two daughters: Brittni Garber 23, a neonatal nurse at Mercy Southwest; and, Chantel, a senior at Liberty High.

She came to Taft because “I liked the idea of being able to focus on one school district and to see the results all the way to the end. I have heard great things about the Taft Union High School District and the students.”

For fun, she likes to run, camp, do off-roading, and teach Sunday school.

Steve Parker, the new agriculture teacher, worked his way through two South Sequoia League schools before landing at Taft. Born in Wasco, he graduated from Wasco High School where he played trombone and tuba in the band, golf, and was active in the Future Farmers of America.

He earned his bachelors in agricultural science with a concentration in animal sci Steve Parker

ence and later his teaching credential at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

He taught ag science at Woodlake High School in Tulare County for 14 years, then started the ag program at Bakersfield Christian three years ago. Ex-principal Bernie Valenzuela encouraged Parker to apply for the opening here.

His wife of 21 years, Stephanie, and he are raising three children. The oldest, Andrew, a Taft High freshman is on the water polo team and active in FFA. Parker spends his free time watching his children participate in team sports and occasionally finds time for woodworking.

Parker, 45, said he loves Taft High. “Everybody’s been wonderful. I’m happy to be out here.”

Michelle Lopez is a special education and English teacher. She was born in San Fernando but moved to Taft Michelle Lopez at the age of 9 and graduated from Lincoln Junior High, Maricopa High and Taft College.

At Maricopa High, she was the president of the Associated Student Body, freshman and sophomore classes and the Girls’ Athletic Association. As a 5-foot-8 senior, she was the catcher and team and league MVP in softball, and also played forward on the basketball team.

At 53, she still enjoys sports but finds herself on the sidelines cheering on her three children or many nieces and nephews.

Her 24-year-old daughter, Jazmine, earned a softball scholarship to Cal State Bakersfield where she is studying to be a pharmacist. Her 23-year-old son, Jarrett, is attending Taft College and her 17-year-old daughter, Sable, is a senior at Bakersfield Christian, where she plays volleyball.

Lopez earned her bachelor of arts in English and her teaching credential in English at CSUB; and, credentials in mild/ moderate and moderate/severe special education and her master’s in special education at National University.

She was an administrative coordinator at CSUB from 19992006, then worked as a teacher at the Kern County Superintendent of Schools the past 10 years, primarily in alternative education.

She lives in Bakersfield, which she uses as a base for camping trips and traveling. She lived in Singapore and hopes to return one day to teach for a few years.

Serena Hinojosa is a special education teacher specializing in math.

She was born in Bakersfield 27 years ago and graduated from Highland High School where she played on the JV tennis team, was a softball pitcher and a cheerleader. She earned her bachelor’s of arts in liberal studies, her teaching credential in mild/moderate special education and is working on her master’s in special education, all at Cal State Bakersfield.

Serena Hinojosa She worked as a dean’s secretary in the Kern High School District office. This is her first teaching job.

Her husband, Daniel, works for PG&E and they had a daughter, Isabella, 7, and a baby due near Christmas.

She loves Taft so far, almost as much as she loves Disneyland.

They have been season ticket holders for five years and have visited the happiest place on earth more than 100 times.

The teacher who may be the happiest to land in Taft is Kara Ranney, who teaches six severely handicapped students age 18-22 as they transition to life after high school.

Last year, she was the CTA president at Vineland School where the superintendent publicly criticized his teachers in The Bakersfield Californian. Twice. Fifteen of 40 teachers found jobs elsewhere.

She said her husband told her Kara Ranney it is a “welcome change to have his wife excited about work again.” And she is. “Everybody is welcoming and friendly here.”

She was born in Helena, MT, and graduated from Helena Capital High School, where she played viola in the orchestra.

She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and her teaching credential at Montana State University — Northern. She earned her masters’ in educational technology from National University. She is working on her credentials in mild/moderate and moderate/severe special education through Point Loma University.

Ranney taught elementary school at the Arvin Union School District for two years, the Orange Unified School District for three years and then Vineland for 13 years.

Her happy husband is Eric, who is the facility manager of the Ikea Distribution Center at the base of the Grapevine. They have a 15-year-old son, Kylar, who attends Liberty High School and five-year-old twins, Chloe and Rhett.

They enjoy camping and riding quads, visiting Avila Beach, and summer trips to Montana and Ohio.

She is hoping to find local businesses to place her students so they can learn job skills, even volunteer jobs.

Sydney Dalmaso is an English teacher at Buena Vista.

She has an extensive teaching history.

Born in Eureka, she graduated from La Sierra High School in Sacramento.

She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English at CSU, Stanislaus; her single subject teaching credential in English at Chapman University; and her masters in English composition and rhetoric at CSU, Stanislaus.

She taught at Merced ComSydney Dalmaso munity College for six years; Le Grand High School, south of Merced, for 14 years; the San Diego Unified High School District for two years; and a year at the San Diego Office of Education, where she worked in the court and community school department. Working with the troubled and homeless teenagers made her a much better teacher, she said. In comparison, the students at BV “are very sweet,” she said.

Her youngest son, Zach, 24, transferred to CSUB, and her oldest son, Jeff, 28, entered Bakersfield College after four years in the Air Force. So she began looking for jobs in Kern County and landed in Taft. Her husband of 31 years, Tony, found a job as a physical therapist. “The Central Valley, is home to me,” she said.

She enjoys western pleasure riding her two horses, and staying fit by yoga, Pilates and swimming.

Jesica Grizzle is a math teacher at Buena Vista High School.

The Alton, IL. native, grew up in Hollister, CA, but graduated from Alpine High School in Alpine, TX, where she was a member of Future Farmers of America and the Sheriff ’s

She played volleyball, sang in the choir and played tenor saxophone in the band.

She earned her Bachelor of Science degree and her teaching credential in math at Cal State Bakersfield. She spent the past two years teaching math at Wasco High School.

She teaches about 60 Jesica Grizzle students, each working at their own pace.

The 38-year-old single mom lives in Shafter with her 19-yearold son, Austin, her mother and her sister. She enjoys sci-fi TV, video games and card games.

Juan Ventimiglia has been hired as a long-term substitute for the English department for the fall semester and hopes it will turn into a full-time job.

The 30-year-old native of Bahia Blanca, Argentina, has an unusual back-story.

In a tragic accident, his father was killed by a hit-andrun driver when Juan was just six months old. When he was two, he moved with his mom to Florida where Juan Ventimiglia she finished her master’s degree in English literature. When he was 13, his mother married Stafford Betty and now both parents have Ph.D.s and teach at CSUB. Ventimiglia lived in America nearly all his life but just became a US citizen six months ago.

He graduated from Bakersfield High School, where he was No. 2 on the tennis team as a senior after playing varsity all four years.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in English, with a minor in linguistics at CSUB. He said he will complete his single subject teaching credential in English there in December.

He substitute taught in the Kern High School District for two years.

Single, he lives in Bakersfield, where he enjoys cycling, reading and traveling. He has cycled as many as 12,000 miles in a year and climbed 800,000 vertical feet.

He has traveled extensively in Argentina, including Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego.

Election Season Begins Tuesday City Nears Completion on September Sixth Phase IV of Rails to Trails

Below is listed local, state and federal elections that particularly affect the Westside.

23rd Congressional District: Wendy Reed (D) and Incumbent Kevin McCarthy (R).

34th Assembly District: With Shannon Grove termed out two new candidates will vie for this seat Perrin Swanlund (D) and Vince Fong (R).

Judge Superior Court, Office #34: Tiffany Organ-Bowels and Cory J. Woodward West Kern Community College Board: Kathy Garner Orrin and incumbents Billy D. White and Kal J. Vaughn Once again the Taft Union High School Board will have the largest number of challengers standing for election: John Kopp, Michael T. Eveland and Wendy Berry will take on incumbents Samuel “Tom” White and J. George Harmer.

McKittrick School District Board: Julia Sagaser Morris and Donald Baggs II will square off against incumbent George “Dennis” Murphy.

Midway School District Board: Rachel Dayton and Sharyn Eveland challenging for incumbent Hubbell Self ’s seat.

City of Maricopa: Gary Mock will be running to unseat one of three incumbents, John W. Wilke, III, Johnny Horn and John N. Crump Jr. City Clerk, Dianna Emfinger will have no challenger.

City of Taft: Andrew Wagner will take on incumbents Dave Noerr and Orchel D. Krier while City Clerk, Yvette Mayfield and City Treasurer, Charles “Ben” Mangum will run unopposed.

West Side Cemetary District Announces Service Cost Increase The West Side Cemetary District Board agreed to increase the costs of services. Citing the significant decreases in tax revenues, recent losses to the Bakrsfield National Cemetary in Arvin, Ca, and West Side Cemetary District not having a cost increase in over ten years. In order to maintain the service the community has enjoyed to come and expect, regretfully prices must increase. Therefore, West Side Cemetary District will be increasing all releated burial cost effective November 1, 2016.

Any pre-need contracts paid prior to November 1, 2016 will be honored.

By Jerry Livingston JD Jerry.Taft.Independent@Gmail.com Persons driving down 2nd Street just south of Main Street will notice that construction is almost finished on the fourth phase of the Rails to Trails bike path.

The City is hoping to complete this phase of the project by September 12th according to City Manager Craig Jones.

Through the KernCOG, the City of Taft was allotted $593,985 in Federal funds under the Transportation Enhancement (TE) program.

The Rails to Trails Phase IV project has constructed a mixed used asphalt path along former Sunset Railroad corridor. The project’s location begins at the terminus of the existing Rails to Trails pathway at 2nd St. and ends with a turnaround near State Route 119.

The project crosses a Sandy Creek Tributary, where a prefabricated pedestrian steel bridge is being installed along with some minor channel improvements to accommodate the new bridge.

The total project length is approximately 2,900 ft.

Because of the City’s budget constraints the landscaping work will not be done at this time.

This project is part of a larger bikeway plan called for in the City’s General Plan and ultimately it is hoped that it will connect to a pathway all the way to Bakersfield.

Lack of Challengers Keeps District Elections Off Fall Ballot

Liberty Under Fire The “Black Door” Out of Poverty Harold Pease, Ph. D Ferguson, Detroit, Baltimore, Dallas and now Milwaukee.

Each seemingly has pent up anger directed first at its own race and now at law enforcement. “Black lives matter,” some chant, but most black homicides are by black perpetrators, not white. Blacks, we are told, now do half of all murders in the United States. Four constants in these cities are evident, all: are predominantly black, are on fire, and are driven mostly by young angry black men.

But the constant ignored most by the establishment press is that each of these cities has been governed by the same political party for the last fifty years and, despite promises otherwise, has never delivered anything but poverty, subpar schools, crime and unemployment. In political science these cities may be as close to a controlled experiment as one is likely to get; five inner cities predominantly the same race, widely geographically distributed, ran by one political party during the same five-decade time frame—all with the same results. Theoretically we could impose the same progressive agenda on any inner city and have the same results.

blacks to subservience. Would not peace and a job be the hand up that the black communities need rather than just throwing subsistence government handouts, as has been the solution of the past?

Today unemployment for blacks is nearly twice that of whites and for black youth in the inner cities it has been known to soar to as high as 60 percent. Moreover, the U. S. Census Bureau listed the overall poverty rate in 2011 at 15 percent, but for blacks it was 27.6 percent. Overall household income was $50,054, but for blacks it was $32,229.

The Heritage Foundation found that “only 56 percent of blacks graduate from high school.” The average black man has little to hope for in a world where seemingly all other races appear to have much more.

It didn’t used to be this way. According to black economist, Walter Williams, prior to the progressive socialist policies of the last 50 years, “black unemployment was lower and blacks were more active in the labor market than they are today.” In 1910, for example, “71 percent of blacks over nine years of age were employed, compared to 51 percent for whites.” This trend stayed strong through the 1960’s, “black male labor force participation in every age group was equal to or greater than that of whites,” he says. Although black schools, prior to the 1960s, were characteristically modest in funding and supplies, they “often produced student bodies with high average IQs and graduated scholars of note.”

Enter Donald Trump with his Milwaukee address to first reestablish law and order and then, “To every voter living in the inner-city, I’m running to offer you a much better future and a job.” This may be the “black door” out of poverty.

Black economist Thomas Sowell, in his book “Education: Assumptions Versus History,” agreed, “In short, no stringent ‘elitism’ is necessary to achieve high-quality education. It is only necessary to … exclude the tiny fraction (of students) who are troublemakers.” Black poverty was steadily and noticeable declining.

The War on Poverty is the philosophy that largely led a race into the same type of dependency that they had worked a hundred years to escape after the Civil War and had made notable advancement. A trillion dollars a year now feeds this monster—15 trillion since the program was begun to buy the poverty vote by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964; but unfortunately, with no measurable end to poverty as promised. Statistics show poverty to be proportionally about the same as when the program was begun.

Kurt Williamsen in an article, “Do Progressive Policies Hurt Black Americans?” described how this played out. Welfare “spending contributed to overall black poverty by encouraging single-parent, female-headed households…. Young black women often had children out of wedlock, beginning a cycle of enduring poverty and welfare, wherein they relied on welfare as a main source of income, as did their children.

Welfare provided more money for young women with fatherless children, on average, than the same young women could have made if they were employed.” It also destroyed families. If she got married she would lose the benefits. Today, ”73 percent of black babies are born to unwed mothers” and well over a third of the race is on welfare. Unfortunately, “welfare provided an incentive for young black women to raise fatherless children and collect welfare, leading to the epidemic problems with black crime, black schooling, black unemployment and black poverty.”

So we return to the angry young black man using violence against his own race to obtain what he wants. The progressive Democratic policies of the last fifty years have consistently harmed the black community. A Trump victory may offer him the first and only door out of what clearly did not work in 50 years and never will.
