IT’S ALL ABOUT MOROCCO
Ultimate Experiences Editor-at-Large Ignacio Maza shares his six favorite destinations in the magical country.
From the architectural wonders of Marrakech to the serene coastal charm of Essaouira, Morocco creates an experience that’s a must for discerning explorers. The North African jewel has long lured travelers with its warm hospitality and captivating sights, making it a destination where adventure feels effortless, and discovery feels safe. Pro tip: Travel with a guide who speaks the language, knows the ropes, and can sort out all the details. Here, Ultimate Experiences Editor-at-Large Ignacio Maza selects a few of his most beloved Moroccan destinations.
MARRAKECH
If you visit one city in Morocco, this is it. In my opinion, the Red City (named for its buildings and defensive walls made from red sandstone) is the most beautiful in the whole country. Get there faster with United Airlines’ new nonstop Newark-Marrakech flights. Don’t miss the Arab Moorish architectural masterpieces, like the Madrasa Ben Youssef, and be sure to spend time in the city’s gardens. My favorite is the photogenic Jardin Majorelle—it’s Instagram ready! Have drinks and dinner at La Mamounia, Morocco’s legendary hotel that’s now celebrating 100 years since it opened.
FEZ
Get lost in the labyrinthine alleys of the city’s ancient Medina of Fez, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which will likely remind you of Jerusalem. One the world’s largest and best-preserved medinas, you’ll discover architectural marvels, centuries-old artisan workshops, and captivating craftwork including wood carvings, zellige tilework, and ornate textiles.
THE SAHARA DESERT
Drive down to the small town of Merzouga, on the edge of the Sahara. Before dawn, go on a camel ride and climb atop one of the massive sand dunes of Erg Chebbi and wait for the sun to rise over the desert—a magical moment that will stick with you forever.
CHEFCHAOUEN
Nestled in the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco, this enchanted place is known as the country’s “Blue City” with its streets and buildings painted in vibrant shades of azure. Wander through the medina’s alleys, visit the historic Kasbah, and hike to the Spanish Bouzafer Mosque at sunset for views of the glowing blue landscape.
ATLAS MOUNTAINS
Adventure seekers should not miss hiking in the snow-covered peaks of Toubkal National Park—home of North Africa’s highest mountains. Rugged trails wind through terraced valleys, Amazigh villages, and dramatic rocky landscapes, with hidden waterfalls, breathtaking vistas, and unusual bird sightings along the way.
ESSAOUIRA
Set on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, this is a historic city where ancient medina walls meet wide, sandy beaches. It’s a picture-perfect place to experience kitesurfing or ride horses and camels along the shores. I also recommend strolling through its vibrant port, browsing local shops, and sampling the freshest seafood.
DID YOU KNOW?
Morocco has attracted the creative set for many decades. In the 1950s and 1960s, writers including Paul Bowles, William S. Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Truman Capote, and Tennessee Williams spent long stints in Tangier (Burroughs wrote Naked Lunch there, while The Sheltering Sky by Bowles is set in the region). And according to local lore, musicians Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Cat Stevens, and Frank Zappa all frequently traveled to Essaouria.
DISCOVERING RABAT
The Fairmont La Marina-Rabat Salé brings a captivating experience to Morocco’s capital city.
About 200 miles north of Marrakech lies the seaside capital of Rabat, an intriguing destination that’s at once coastal and urban. The Fairmont La Marina Rabat-Salé rises here, at a point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Bouregreg River. Opened in 2022, the retreat is a fusion of contemporary design and local craftsmanship with geometric tiled flooring, modern landscape art, and decadent terraces.
THE STAY: The 274 exquisite guest rooms, suites, and long-stay residences boast views of the Bouregreg River, the sparkling Atlantic, or the iconic skyline of Rabat. Many rooms feature balconies with water views, while suites are designed with outdoor terraces. The Ambassador Suite Gold is a wonderful space for families, with three bedrooms, a private balcony and terrace, and butler service.
THE DINING: The hotel is home to three renowned restaurants, as well as a riad-inspired tearoom. Dahlia is the place for reimagined authentic Moroccan cuisine, while L’Ecume Brasserie brings the freshest farm and ocean flavors to the table. Le Deck is the celebrated rooftop space, where creative drinks and small bites are served around the infinity pool with 360-degree views—the perfect sunset spot.
THE WELLNESS: Considered one of the best spas in the city, the marble-clad Fairmont La Marina Wellness Center combines ancient Moroccan rituals with cutting-edge techniques. An outdoor pool, traditional hammam, and state-of-the-art gym are designed to indulge the body, mind, and soul, while signature treatments from Natura Bissé & marocMaroc provide an unparalleled sensory journey.
NOT TO MISS: A short journey across the river leads to Rabat’s Medina, which was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012.

YORK CITY ICON
The Surrey, A Corinthia Hotel is as prestigious as the neighborhood it calls home.
Just as Manhattan’s Upper East Side is an enticing blend of heritage, sophistication, and creativity, so too is The Surrey, A Corinthia Hotel, which just reopened in fall 2024 on the iconic corner of East 76th Street and Madison Avenue.
CELEBRATING HISTORY. The Surrey made its first debut nearly 100 years ago, welcoming many celebrities and politicians through the years, including President Kennedy and actress Bette Davis. After a meticulous rebuild, the new Surrey—and Corinthia’s inaugural venture into North America—draws inspiration from the hotel’s rich history and esteemed neighborhood. The 70 guest rooms and 30 suites boast sublime comfort, elegant interiors, and captivating service. Fun fact: Four signature suites are whimsically designed to celebrate the bridges of Central Park. Along with the hotel’s renovation comes the first New York City location of the famed Casa Tua restaurant and private club, joining its sister properties in Miami, Aspen, and Paris.

Ultra-spacious accommodations and five reimagined dining options (including the award-winning Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa restaurant) are the result of a multi-year renovation. Despite its impressive size, guests can expect the Hawaiian spirit of aloha throughout their stay, including a dedicated 24/7 personal concierge team. A FINE HISTORY
Quebec’s Auberge Saint-Antoine is equal parts exquisite hotel and historical museum.
The Auberge Saint-Antoine is located in the charming Petit Champlain district of Old Quebec, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Renowned for both its elegant quarters and its archaeological wonders, it’s home to more than 5,000 artifacts from the French and English colonial eras integrated throughout the gorgeously designed interiors. A unique museum-hotel, it was recently awarded two Michelin Keys.
METICULOUS RESTORATION. Now a member of the refined Relais & Châteaux portfolio, the Auberge Saint-Antoine comprises three fully restored buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The grounds surrounding the property were once a wharf, then a gun battery manned by the French to fend off the British. During construction of the hotel, many artifacts were unearthed and are now on display throughout the Auberge Saint-Antoine, including brass keys and a French cannon, still embedded with a cannonball. The careful restoration resulted in a five-star hotel that celebrates its past throughout the 95 rooms and suites. For a step back in time, reserve one of the 12 historical suites in the Hunt House wing, complete with era-specific furnishings perfectly blended with modern comforts.
