NOW MORE THAN EVER, TRAVELERS ARE CRAVING LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCES. No continent has more to offer than Africa, and no outfitter knows Africa quite like Micato Safaris. Founder Felix Pinto was one of Kenya’s most highly-regarded farmers. In 1966, he and his wife Jane, a former Kenyan table tennis champion, decided to start a little safari company that’s grown into one of the world’s most highly regarded African safari outfitters, voted number one in the world by Travel + Leisure nine times.

Micato has been back on safari since flights to Africa resumed in summer 2020, adding extensive safety protocols for travelers’ peace of mind. Today, there are numerous options to explore with your travel pod via private-use homesteads, exclusive villas, intimate tented camps, and family-specific accommodations that can be reserved on a private basis. Depending on your travel comfort level, you can book a classic safari with pre-set departures and set itineraries, privatize a classic trip, or create your own custom safari, with a bespoke itinerary designed around your travel preferences and interests.

VIP SERVICE AND EXPERIENCES

Share your passions with Micato’s specialists and they’ll curate experiences beyond your wildest dreams, such as helicopter flights to the Turkana basin to look at fossils during exclusive oneon-one time with the first family of paleoanthropology, the Leakeys. Or enjoy front-row seats at a camel derby match in the Namib desert. However you choose to travel, Micato promises access to wildlife conservationists, local artists, and celebrity guests. Known as the “Rolls-Royce of the safari world,” Micato experiences are always executed in style. The team travels with trucks stocked with tables, chairs, linens, china, silver, flowers, and delicious food and drinks for magical al fresco meals. Accommodations are always top of the line, from storied properties such as the Fairmont the Norfolk in Nairobi (pasts guests include Winston Churchill and Teddy Roosevelt) and Richard Branson’s Mahali Mzuri in Kenya’s Maasai Mara.

TRANSFORMATIVE ADVENTURES

You might think your safari is a one-time, bucket-list trip, but after traveling with Micato, you’ll want to return year after year. The depth and breadth of the safari experience is nearly boundless and goes far beyond spotting the Big Five. Come face to face with Silverback Gorillas in Rwanda—close enough to hear each other breathe. Hike in in the Mahale Mountains in Tanzania near Jane Goodall’s Gombe Stream location. Sit in Angel’s Pool, the gurgling natural whirlpool that hovers just inches from the top of the 354-foot roar of Victoria Falls in Zambia.

Clockwise from top left: Gorillas snuggle in Rwanda; heli sightseeing: a child is sent to school for every Micato guest on safari. Opposite: the Great Migration.

And experiences aren’t just about thrills. Micato clients connect deeply with locals throughout their journeys. Guests might have the privilege of being the only outside travelers invited to an annual tribal celebration. In Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, turn your morning workout into an experience you’ll never forget, having a barefooted Maasai warrior join you on the trails. Or have a Maasai host accompany you on a trek through the misty Chyulu Cloud Forest near Mt. Kilimanjaro. These are the moments you’ll go home talking about for years to come.

REGENERATIVE TRAVEL

Beyond exceptional experiences, Micato gives back to the communities it visits in a unique and impactful way. The company believes the most powerful tool for sustainable change in Africa is education. In 1986, Micato employee Lorna Macleod founded AmericaShare, which directs the charitable work of Micato Safaris. Today AmericaShare is dedicated to improving lives through education, focusing on the vulnerable and impoverished women and children in the Mukuru slum of Nairobi, Kenya, whose lives have been impacted by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. In addition, for every safari Micato sells, the company pays the fees required to send an African child to school. And through a school sponsorship program, travelers can contribute to the future of vulnerable children and help them attend boarding school.

Through generous donations from past Micato travelers, the MicatoAmericaShare Harambee Community Centre was built in Mukuru and now serves as an oasis of education. The multi-purpose facility includes the community’s first lending library, now stocked with more than 15,000 books, as well as a computer center. A basketball court was built in part with the help of funds raised by young Micato travelers at their mitzvahs. And Micato Safaris drilled a borehole at Harambee Centre—one of the few places in Mukuru with a regular supply of fresh water—that provides residents more than four million gallons of water each year. When you safari with Micato, the experience is transformational for the guest and the local communities.
