SILVERSEA REDEFINES SUSTAINABILITY AT SEA.

LUXURY TRAVEL IS NO LONGER JUST ABOUT FIVE-STAR SERVICE AND AMENITIES. Today’s discerning traveler wants to book with a brand that’s committed to protecting our planet and is culturally respectful to the local community’s way of life. Americans have identified sustainable discovery as important to them, and many are determined to make sustainable choices when looking to future journeys. Sustainability is the future of luxury travel, and Silver Nova is representative of the incredible innovation of Silversea’s luxury. Silversea is already a leader in environmentally conscious exploration and now, with Silver Nova, they will go even further to meet the expectations of both today and tomorrow.

For more than 30 years, Royal Caribbean Group has been going green and investing in its commitment to adopt a non-carbon-based future. In partnership with World Wildlife Fund in 2016, the company set specific, ambitious, and measurable 2020 sustainability targets to reduce its environmental footprint, increase sustainable tourism, respect coastal communities and cultural heritage, and support WWF’s global ocean conservation work. The group’s luxury brand, Silversea, is now redefining sustainability at sea with its new Evolution-class ships—one of the greenest cruise ships ever built—and slated to debut in Europe in summer 2023.

The new class of ships, the Silver Nova and the Nova Class, are the first hybrid-powered ships free of local emissions while at port, utilizing a fuel cell system, battery technology, and dual-fuel engines using liquefied natural gas as the main fuel. Liquified natural gas emits less CO2 and 97 percent fewer particulates than normal fuel oil used on ships, while a bank of batteries helps save fuel by optimizing the overall ship power system. And the ships will remain emissionsfree while at port—an industry first—thanks to a state-of-the-art fuel cell system that employs hydrogen technology to provide 100-percent power.

This trio of power sources will allow Evolutionclass ships to achieve a 40 percent overall reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions per double occupancy when compared to the brand’s previous class of ships. Other first-of-its-kind eco initiatives include the newly developed Micro Auto Gasification System. With a decreased carbon footprint of ship construction, it reduces onboard waste volume, resulting in lower incineration emissions.

Evolution-class ships will also feature Silversea’s new Otium wellness program, which will debut in spring 2022 on Silver Dawn. A nod to the cruise line’s Italian heritage, Otium takes inspiration from the leisurely Roman times when people philosophized, feasted, and relaxed. Roman baths, a staple of the ancient lifestyle, were the muse for thermal areas intended for socializing in the new spa, as well as the Otium bespoke bathing experience. Every suite category will feature a multi-sensory soak prepared by Silversea’s butlers, complemented by candlelight, music, and haute snacks like caviar and champagne. Indulgences extend to the Otium food experience, which includes an in-suite comfort food menu of gourmet popcorn and lobster rolls, available 24 hours per day.

The delights continue with sthe brand’s culinary program S.A.L.T., which is overseen by James Beard Journalism Award winner and former Saveur magazine editor-in-chief, Adam Sachs. First introduced in 2021 on Silver Moon and rolling out aboard Silver Dawn in 2022, the immersive food experience will be a signature of all Evolutionclass ships, connecting guests to destinations through the lens of

food, people, and culinary traditions. A unique narrative approach brings regional chefs, local historians, cookbook writers, winemakers, and farmers onboard to share their passion and expertise through talks and hands-on cooking lessons in the S.A.L.T. Lab. Local drink specialties dictate the cocktails served at S.A.L.T. Bar, and menus at the modern S.A.L.T. Kitchen restaurant will change based on where the ship is sailing to showcase regional flavors and ingredients.

Evolution-class ships truly speak to the interests and concerns of a new generation of travelers, ushering in a new era of wellness, cultural and culinary immersion, and sustainability initiatives at sea.

NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE’S THE HAVEN BY NORWEGIAN IS IN A CLASS OF ITS OWN.

BY CLARA WOODBRIDGE

ONE OF CRUISING’S MOST BESPOKE EXPERIENCES? The Haven by Norwegian. An exclusive area on Norwegian Cruise Line’s available Epic, Breakaway and Breakaway-Plus class ships, and Prima (coming summer 2022), these discrete ship-within-a-ship experiences are perfectly tucked away on the upper decks and, for many passengers, filled with intrigue. And that’s by design: Consider it a members-only club, where expansive suites, elite amenities, and attentive services are reserved for only a fortunate few. Here’s how to best live The Haven’s ultra-luxury lifestyle.

SUITE LIFE: The Haven suites include eight different accommodations, all spacious and stylish and located at the bow or aft of the ship for sweeping, unobstructed views. The posh and palatial three-bedroom Garden Villa is one of the largest staterooms on any ship, at more than 5,000 square feet. It can sleep eight and features numerous terraces—one with a hot tub —plus an elegant dining room and living room that’s ideal for entertaining. Other luxe options include the Spa Suites—each with its own hot tub and unlimited access to the ship’s thermal spas—and the Deluxe Owners Suite, with floorto-ceiling windows in every room (even the expansive master bathroom.) No matter which of these palatial staterooms you call home, you’ll enjoy ample A-list extras: butler service, plush bathrobes and slippers, espresso and cappuccino machines, and Bulgari toiletrie, to name a few. Garden Villa guests also enjoy private car service at the conclusion of the cruise—to the airport or home if within a 25-mile radius of the

port—and a private escort off the ship, through customs and directly to the awaiting private transport.

THE AMENITIES: The Haven isn’t just an enclave for the best accommodations on the ship; it’s also a private club where members can indulge in luxuries reserved just for them. The Haven Sundeck is an adults-only oasis featuring a pool and hot tub with a retractable roof, making for a quiet retreat with views no matter the weather. Go for cocktails at The Haven Lounge—a plush area with 180-degree ocean views and a library—then on to an elegant dinner at The Haven restaurant. The elite all-day dining room’s menu changes daily, and meals can be delivered to guests’ suites for an al-fresco feast on their balconies. The Haven also has its own private fitness area, and, of course, members can access all of the ship’s other amenities with front-of-theline privileges, including priority reservations at restaurants like Onda at Scarpetta, the first outpostout-sea by New York City’s acclaimed Italian restaurant.

set foot on board. Once at sea, your butler is just a call away (via a mobile phone provided by the ship), and ready to stock your minibar, deliver daily indulgences, and score last-minute reservations at all of the ship’s specialty restaurants. In-port, The Haven passengers also enjoy expedited embarking and disembarking via a private elevator, as well as early access to tender transfers.

ST. JOHN CHAMPAGNE CATAMARAN SAIL & SNORKEL

Board a catamaran and glide along the eastern end of the island before setting sail to the most pristine of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. John. The sail across Pillsbury Sound brings you to a special mooring destination where you can swim, snorkel, or simply relax under the palms.

ESCAPE TO THE BATHS IN TORTOLA

Massive gray boulders of varying sizes rise from the sea’s crystalline waters, making a maze of sorts for travelers to wade or swim through. Once you reach Devil’s Bay, the stunning beach clearing at the end of the rocks, you’ll find shallow clear waters perfect for a little light snorkeling or restful sunbathing.

SNORKEL GREAT STIRRUP CAY

Whether you’re snorkeling for the first time or an expert, discover the underwater sculpture garden on Great Stirrup Cay. Located in the clear blue waters of Bertram’s Cove, you’ll explore statues of mermaids, sea creatures, fountains and urns.
