Exploring Napa Valley’s vineyards.

Onward & Upward

NO ONE COULD HAVE PREDICTED THE TURBELENT RIDE WE’VE EMBARKED ON THIS YEAR. But

while uncertainty remains, one aspect of travel remains steadfast: It’s an essential desire. Exploring physical terrain and new communities manifests our collective hope to be connected emotionally. And that’s where travel shines.

When I first ventured out post pandemic, to the Florida Keys, I was witness to what a longtime local described as “One of the top 10 sunsets in my lifetime.” Yes, there were masks, and while we social distanced, watching the sun cast a candy-orange curtsy across the sky, the gratitude felt while experienced nature’s brilliant performance was all the more profound. As you navigate this issue, I hope you find inspiration in nature and community, as seen via Ignacio Maza’s compelling stories on Where to Go Next (page 44) and Istanbul, Turkey (page 50).

Exploring is in our DNA. Let’s continue to safely journey, with gratitude, together.

Enjoy the issue!

MY COVID-19 SILVER

LINING: Early morning walks in New York’s Central Park and counting my blessings.

BIGGEST SURPRISE WHILE

VISITING TURKEY: Cappadocia. The rock churches blew me away, as did the unique and otherworldly landscapes. CURRENT OBSESSION: Getting to a beach resort in the Caribbean soon.

WHERE TO NEXT: Uzbekistan. I want to explore the famous cities of the Silk Road—Samarkand, Khiva, and Bukhara, and follow in the footsteps of Marco Polo.
