WELCOME

A MESSAGE FROM GROUP CAPTAIN ROSS JONES Welcome to RAAF Wagga. Whether you are a new recruit, guest of a graduate, trainee, student, staff, guest lecturer, or a reviewing officer, you have a part to play in the dynamic environment that is RAAF Wagga. RAAF Wagga’s motto is “We Prepare” and we have been preparing Air Force personnel for their future military roles since 1940. Through the gates of RAAF Wagga, our graduates serve the Australian Defence Force and our nation with pride, professionalism and distinction. Our sailors, soldiers, airmen and airwomen realise air power through their actions, decisions and leadership. Through quality induction, training and education, we shape tomorrow’s leaders. Australia’s air power starts here in Wiradjuri Country on which RAAF Wagga resides. With every recruit’s journey starting at RAAF Wagga, we are the Home of the Airman. Everyone at RAAF Wagga contributes to their development. Whether we are Defence members, Australian Public Servants, or

contractors, we are preparing our graduates for their future career. We aim to ensure that all our graduates embody the Air Force values of respect, excellence, agility, dedication, integrity and teamwork. How they adopt and model these values will be our legacy. Experiencing the pride of a graduation parade, sharing in the realisation of understanding, or witnessing a moment of professional mastery are privileged encounters. Awareness and acceptance of our role is humbling. Trainees might not remember their first boss, but they will remember their first instructor, the first person that inspired them to embrace their profession and achieve things they previously didn’t think they were capable of. This magazine describes the broad scope of the induction, training and education conducted at RAAF Wagga. Within, you will learn about the beautiful Riverina, the supportive community that is our host, including some information on the original custodians of this land, the Wiradjuri people. This base and our community are the

RAAF BASE WAGGA

Welcome to a team of approximately 1600 ADF (students, reserve and permanent staff), civilians, and contractors, all working towards achieving the highest quality graduate and post-graduate ground training for Air Force, Army and Navy. We also have about 300 families here in locality.

Not only is RAAF Base Wagga committed to tri-Service graduate and post-graduate training for all ranks, the base also welcomes overseas visitors and students, under the Defence Cooperation Program, for courses that are recognised both nationally and internationally for their excellence. Wagga is also the home of Headquarters Ground Training Wing and Headquarters RAAF College, covering induction training and then initial employment training. The combined responsibilities extend to 12 RAAF locations and two Army bases, offering 256 different training courses, with about 4,000 graduates per year. RAAF Base Wagga has been an integral part of the local Wagga Wagga community since 1940. RAAF Wagga delivers technical and non-technical initial employment and postgraduate training that is fundamental to the delivery of military air and space power in support of national objectives. RAAF Wagga supports two key headquarters of Wings from Air Force Training Group; RAAF College and Ground Training Wing; along with four major training units; No 1 Recruit Training Unit (1RTU), School of Postgraduate Studies (SPS), RAAF School of Technical Training (RAAFSTT), and the RAAF School of Administration and Logistics Training (RAAFSALT). Non-training units on the base are: No 31 (City of Wagga Wagga) Squadron, No 1 Security Force Squadron Detachment Wagga (1SECFORSQN Det WAG), Wagga Health Centre (WAGHC) and No 1 Expeditionary Health Squadron detachment Wagga(1EHS Det WAG). Their primary role is to support training conducted by the four major training units on RAAF Wagga.

NO 1 RECRUIT TRAINING UNIT The role of No 1 Recruit Training Unit (1RTU) is to prepare recruits, newly enlisted Air Force men and women, for military service. Recruit training involves the transformation of civilians into airmen and airwomen who have basic military knowledge to become effective members of the Air Force team. This transformation occurs over 12 weeks of training, culminating in a graduation parade.

The Australian defence Force has a workforce composed of commissioned officers and enlisted members. Every Air Force enlisted member begins their career at 1RTU. Indeed, 1RTU is responsible for two-thirds of the Air Force’s initial training. The remainder are is conducted by Officer Training School or the Australian Defence Force Academy, who train commissioned officers. Teamwork, self-discipline, ‘esprit de corps’ and the development of respect for the values of the Air Force play a vital role in the training at 1RTU. Consequently, the instructional staff at 1RTU, which includes Military Skills Instructors (MSIs), Airfield Defence Guards (ADGs) and

Physical Training Instructors (PTIs), as well as other support staff employed at the unit, must embody all the aspects of Air Force values – Respect, Excellence, Agility, Dedication, Integrity and Teamwork. The 1RTU philosophy of training is to take the qualities already possessed by the recruits and build on them through instruction, ‘learning by doing’, coaching and mentoring. Putting in an honest effort, making and learning from mistakes, and doing better next time are essential features of the training process. Importantly, there is a strong emphasis on ‘Airmanship’, which focuses on the moral and ethical behaviour expected of all members of the Royal Australian Air Force.

5

The quality of instructional staff at 1RTU is a key to graduating airmen and airwomen that the Air Force can be proud of. One of the aspects that enhances Air Force training is our MSIs come from a diverse range of backgrounds. Any airman or airwoman may apply to become an MSI and if successful, they are able to apply for a posting to 1RTU as an instructor. As a result, our pool of MSIs has a range of ranks, experience, mustering (trade), age, gender and background. This diversity offers recruits the very best training opportunities and exposure to a wide range of military and personal experience. Although subject to recruiting targets, 1RTU can train up to 1200 recruits per year. Recruits are delivered training in very modern facilities that were built in 2008 incorporating sustainable and aesthetic designs, while retaining a military character. In addition to a classroom environment, recruits are exposed to field conditions in our Ground Defence Training Area and will also undertake live weapon qualifications on a military firing range. Recruit training is really about delivering members to the Air Force who have mastered basic military knowledge and skills. Recruits graduate with the rank of aircraftman or aircraftwomen; however, this is only the start of their training as most 1RTU graduates still need to complete mustering specific training before posting into the wider Air Force.

RAAF GUIDE

1RTU HISTORY AND INFORMATION BRIEF HISTORY OF 1RTU

Prior to the formation of 1RTU, the training of recruits was performed across a number of training units across Australia. With the establishment of 1RTU on 2 August 1954 at RAAF Base Richmond (near Sydney) the training of recruits was centralised to a single unit. The unit then relocated a number of times, firstly to RAAF Base Rathmines (near Newcastle) on 28 April 1958, then to RAAF Base Wagga on 30 November 1960, RAAF Base Edinburgh (near Adelaide) on 27 March 1964 and then back to RAAF Base Wagga in 2008. In 1950 the Women’s Royal Australian Air Force (WRAAF) was established. Training of WRAAF recruits was undertaken separately to male recruits entering the RAAF. Early training of female recruits was undertaken in several locations until a WRAAF Recruit Training Flight was eventually incorporated into 1RTU on 21 July 1965. With the absorption of the WRAAF into the RAAF in 1977 the function of training female recruits was transferred to Women’s Training Unit (WTU) in Tottenham (near Melbourne) on 13 June 1976. After a second move to RAAF Laverton from January 1977 until January 1981 WTU was disbanded and

the responsibility of training both male and female recruits was vested in 1RTU at RAAF Base Edinburgh. In 1975, Her Majesty The Queen approved the unit badge and motto “Across the Threshold” with the two headed Roman god ‘Janus’ the god of gateways and the protector of all beginnings. A motto considered most appropriate to the function of 1RTU. On the 4th October 1989, His Excellency, The Honourable Bill Hayden, AC, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, presented the Governor-Generals Banner to 1 Recruit Training Unit. The presentation of the Governor-Generals Banner is awarded to recognise the achievements and service of non-operational units that are ineligible for Squadron Standards but which have completed 25 years service. The awarding of the Governor Generals Banner to 1RTU was a positive recognition of the contribution of the unit to the effectiveness of one of the worlds finest Air Forces. The 1RTU Governor Generals Banner is now regularly paraded on graduation parades throughout the year. The current 1RTU precinct at RAAF Base Wagga comprises of nine major buildings, each one of them named in the interests of honouring our heritage. The Headquarters building is named after the first Commanding Officer of 1RTU; Squadron Leader T.G. Janes. The recruit recreational facility is named after an Air Force Victoria Cross recipient; FSGT R.H. Middleton. The remaining seven buildings are named after locations that 1RTU and WTU were located since the adoption of centralised recruit training.

AIR POWER BEGINS HERE IN WIRADJURI COUNTRY

RAAF Base Wagga is located on traditional Wiradjuri land. This fact is acknowledged every time an Air Force person takes the care to deliver an Acknowledgement of Country at the start of a significant activity here, such as a graduation or a meeting where people from other places have come to attend. An Acknowledgement is a simple way of showing respect for the local Wiradjuri People and it is deeply appreciated.

From its early beginning in 1940, RAAF Base Wagga has become a very important part of Air Force and the local Wagga Wagga community and it is good to remember that my people have walked and lived and loved these lands for many thousands of years before that time. As the Chief Executive Officer of the Wagga Wagga Local Aboriginal Land Council, I am honoured to be asked to write a few words of introduction for this RAAF Base Wagga Guide. I am encouraged that Air Force people are actively engaging with the local Wiradjuri people, including our Local Aboriginal Land Council, to nurture a strong and healthy relationship. As a local Wiradjuri woman, I feel happy when I see a sign to acknowledge our traditional custodianship of this land at the main parade ground which is the place of ceremonial importance on the Base. The words chosen for the sign are very powerful. “Air Power begins here in Wiradjuri Country.” These seven words communicate so much.

HISTORY The School’s history can be traced back to 26 February 1940 when No 3 School of Technical Training, based at Ultimo in Sydney, offered courses for personnel enlisted as Clerk Pay, a precursor to today’s Personnel Capability Specialist (PCS). In April 1940 No 4 School of Technical Training was formed at Headquarters Southern Area. Amongst the courses at No 4 School of Technical Training were storekeepers, cook, mess steward, and dental orderly.

officers drill refresher courses, administrative officer refresher training and high altitude training. On 30 November 1942 the Equipment Training School (formerly a section of 1 Aircraft Depot), was established at Laverton, Victoria in order to conduct training for officers and selected airmen and airwomen in equipment and stores procedures, equipment administration, and stores accounting. The School had 223 trainees on strength when created and 260 trainees graduated during December 1942, bringing the total number of graduates from the School and its precursor to 559. During the period January 1943 to April 1944, the School had, on average, 100 students under training and graduated 106 trainees each month. On 29 April 1944 the School moved back to Ascot Vale, where it ceased

On 09 August 1940 the School of Administration was established at RAAF Base Laverton. The unit trained prospective officers from the RAAF and (later) Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAFs) of the Administrative and Special Duties Branch, with the first course (No.6) graduating 47 officers on 13 September 1940. On 27 December 1941 the School moved to Ascot Vale, where it remained until February 1942, when its headquarters took up accommodation at Trinity College at Melbourne University, Carlton. The training curricula expanded in March 1943, with the addition of officer cipher courses. From May 1943 unit commanders’ courses were offered and the School also undertook Air Training Corps

RAAF GUIDE

function as a separate unit and became a section of 1 Engineering School. At this time a total of 2067 personnel had graduated from the Equipment Training School. The Medical Training Unit was formed at Laverton on 15 July 1943, with 12 medical officers for instruction and 96 airmen and airwomen under training. The unit moved to ‘Larundel’ at Preston on 12 August 1943. Courses undertaken included those for the instruction of hygiene inspectors, medical officers, medical orderlies, nursing orderlies, RAAF nurses and clerk medical assistants.

In 1956 the Adult Trainee Squadron and the Apprentice and Junior Trainee Squadron formed at RAAF Forest Hill, Wagga Wagga. The courses offered at the squadrons included Clerk Equipment, a precursor to today’s Supply mustering. The Clerical and Supply Trades Squadron of the RAAF School of Technical Training was formed as the RAAF School of Clerical and Supply Training on 01 June 1985. The School was made up of three flights: catering, clerical and supply training. In December 1992 the School absorbed the responsibility of the Supply Training School of 2 Stores Depot due to the planned closure of that unit in June 1993. To reflect this clerical flight was expanded to become ‘administrative and clerical flight’ and an educational support services section was raised. Since its inception the School has offered, at various times, training for physical training instructors, motor transport fitters, stewards, cooks, defence force recruiters, catering officers, dental administrators, driver firemen, driver motor transport operators, supply clerks, dental assistants, administrative clerks, mess supervisors and ground safety officers. On the disbandment of the School in the mid 1990s the role of training the Clerical and Supply trades was returned to RAAFSTT under the banner of Non-Technical Training Flight. In 2003 the Squadron was renamed the Squadron of Clerical and Supply Training with the Squadron’s role now encompassing the training of RAAF Logistics Officers, Administrative Officers, Supply Basic, Clerk Supply Basic, Clerk Basic Course as well as post graduate training in Explosive Storage, Dangerous Goods and Storage Life Management. As of 01 May 2015 a combined total of 12469 personnel have graduated from the various Initial Employment Training and Postgraduate Initial Employment Training courses run by RAAFSALT.

THE BADGE The RAAFSALT badge comprises a torch set in front of a cornucopia and a quill displayed saltirewise, with the motto ‘Training for Support.’ The School’s role in encapsulated by: the torch which is an emblem of enlightenment and training; the quill which is a reference to the administration duties historically conducted with a quill pen and ink; and the cornucopia representing the supply and provisioning functions of logistics. The quill is readily identifiable by its attractive colouring as that of a Galah Cockatoo (Cacatua Roseicapilla). When the original SCST badge was proposed many of these birds were found around Wagga Wagga so this is a reference the location of RAAFSALT.

RAAF SCHOOL OF TECHNICAL TRAINING

RAAFSTT provides initial employment training for aircraft technical trades to meet nationally accredited aeroskills competencies. RAAFSTT also delivers post-graduate education to engineering officers and senior technicians operating in ADF aviation. The Defence Aeroskills Training Academy (DATA), a Defence contractor, works hand-in-hand with uniformed RAAFSTT personnel to deliver technical and engineering training. Both organisations work to foster and develop the right behaviours and attitudes to employment in the ADF maintenance environment.

RAAFSTT is the one of the most diverse training units in the Air Force. The School has an annual throughput of around 1100 trainees and students and is responsible for the conduct of over thirty different technical courses. Graduates of RAAFSTT maintain aircraft, aviation components, armament systems, life support equipment for aircrew and other technical equipment, in addition to managing maintenance processes at all levels. RAAFSTT was originally formed at Wagga as Ground Training School in February 1946, was renamed as the RAAF Technical College in May 1950 and assumed its current name in December 1952. From its inception, the School has focused on delivering capable technical tradespeople to maintain Air Force’s operational edge. In its early years, the School conducted predominantly apprentice training, but was

also involved in instructional and National Service training. In 1993, following the technical trade restructure, the apprentice scheme was disbanded. In 1996 the role of the School expanded significantly following its amalgamation with the RAAF School of Clerical & Supply Training. In 2005 this element of the School was broken away and was formed as the RAAF School of Administration and Logistics Training. In 2013 the Air Force entered a contract with the Defence Aeroskills Training Academy, comprising BAE Systems, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and Pennant International Group, to deliver nationally accredited aeroskills packages in concert with the military contextualisation and mentoring provided by RAAFSTT personnel.

19

OUR MISSION IS:

‘To prepare aviation maintenance and engineering personnel, ready to pursue ongoing technical mastery, in support of Australia’s Defence Force capability’

On 19 November 1971 RAAFSTT took a unique and privileged place in Air Force history by being the first unit to be awarded a Unit Queen’s Colour. Presentation of the Queen’s Colour to RAAFSTT recognised the school’s enviable record of training thousands of servicemen and women in a wide range of specialties. The Colour is honoured as a symbol of the trust the Queen reposes in the School and as an emblem of achievement.

In June 2003 the then Chief of Defence Force, General Peter Cosgrove, recognised the efforts of RAAFSTT by awarding a Unit Commendation to the School. The award recognised the School’s exemplary reputation as a strongly tri-Service-focused training organisation, functioning in a wholly integrated fashion comprised of representatives of all three Services, the Australian Public Service and a contracted training provider.

RAAF COLLEGE - HISTORY RAAF College’s history extends back to the 1st of August 1947 when it was formed at Point Cook as an officer training institution. It was renamed the RAAF Academy in 1961 and commenced a partnership with Melbourne University, offering degree level education to the officer candidates progressing through it. This tradition continued until 1986 when the Australian Defence Force Academy opened in Canberra and took over responsibility for degree level officer entry education. The Academy site and facilities at Point Cook were then used to establish a new RAAF College (RAAFCOL) responsible for initial and postgraduate officer training for Air Force. Schools within the College at the time were Officers’ Training School (OTS) and the School of Applied Management which included responsibility for the Basic Staff Course. In 1998, the role of the College was expanded with the incorporation of airmen recruit

27

training through No. 1 Recruit Training Unit (1RTU) at RAAF Edinburgh and airmen promotion courses at the Airmen Leadership Flight, RAAF Wagga and its two satellite training centres at Richmond and Amberley. In 2000, RAAFCOL was restructured to include all officer and airmen postgraduate residential and distance learning courses under the banner of the School of Postgraduate Studies (SPS) which was formed in Wagga. In 2005, the Central Band and the RAAF Museum became part of RAAFCOL followed in 2006 by the Air Command Band. By the end of 2006, RAAFCOL had overall responsibility for six individual units. In January 2008, a number of RAAFCOL units completed moves to new locations. Of particular note was the relocation of 1RTU to RAAF Wagga and OTS to RAAF East Sale. Additionally, the Central Band and the Air Command Band amalgamated to create the Air Force Band (AFBAND) at RAAF Williams - Laverton. RAAFCOL and Ground Training Wing (GTW) amalgamated on 01 January 2008 to form a much larger RAAFCOL with its headquarters at RAAF Wagga. Following further considerations, RAAFCOL and GTW split into two separate headquarters on 01 December 2009 with both remaining at RAAF Wagga. At the time of the separation, RAAFCOL comprised of 1RTU, AFBAND, Defence International Training Centre (DITC), OTS and SPS, in addition to a small headquarters element. On 1 July 2013 No 31 (City of Wagga Wagga) Squadron transferred to RAAFCOL.

SCHOOL OF POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

The School of Postgraduate Studies (SPS) is responsible for delivery of Professional Military Education and Training (PMET) courses to airmen, airwomen and officers in the Royal Australian Air Force. Additionally, SPS imparts the core skills and knowledge required for personnel who have been selected for command appointments.

Education is the foundation of professional mastery and Air Force PMET is designed to produce people who not only understand the “family business” but who can also consistently apply sound judgement in complex and ambiguous situations. Air Force PMET is a continuum of distance and residential courses undertaken at each rank level and are comprised of five modules: Airpower, Leadership, Values and Ethics, Military Management and Communication. To meet the Air Force PMET responsibility, SPS conducts approximately 70 residential courses annually, of 10 days duration each, and delivers six self-paced distance-learning courses. The distance courses provide students with the underpinning knowledge in the five key areas mentioned above, and the residential courses provide an opportunity to build on this foundation knowledge. On average, SPS interacts with some 2,500-3,000 students per year. This represents a significant proportion of the Air Force population. The leadership training provided in Air Force PMET is fundamental to both shaping the organisation’s culture and developing the potential of those who undertake its courses, and thereby contributes directly to Air Force capability. SPS challenges each student to actively accept the responsibility for their rank and to apply the concepts and ideas learned through PMET, back in their respective workplace.

29

OUR TRAINING PHILOSOPHY SPS uses the principle of ‘method as model’. Everything that we do should model the organisation that Air Force seeks to create. Therefore, SPS strives to model Air Force values; Respect, Excellence, Agility, Dedication, Integrity and Teamwork. SPS encourages self-learning through experiential activities and an open feedback process. Residential course instructors/facilitators contextualise the students learning so that it applies to each individual’s workplace, thereby reinforcing the relevance of the experience. The courses are also designed to challenge the students, providing the opportunity for personal growth and satisfaction from the experience. The Air Force suite of PMET courses require professionalism and commitment from students and SPS staff strive to help each individual derive personal meaning from their experience. Overall, the courses promote personal growth through self-knowledge and professional growth through shared knowledge.

NO 31 SQUADRON

No 31 (City of Wagga Wagga) Squadron (31SQN) is part of Air Force Training Group and reports to Headquarters RAAF College.

31SQN is responsible for the military coordination of RAAF Base Wagga and provides support to training activities for the ADF operating from RAAF Base Wagga. This includes, but is not exclusive to arranging ceremonial functions, the co-ordination and management of daily airbase operations, such as Base Command and Control, Safety, Emergency Response, and Chaplaincy Services. In Feb 2015, the RAAF Wagga Physical and Recreational Training Centre team consisting of six Physical Training Instructors transferred from HQGTW to 31SQN. This team operates in support of RAAFSTT and RAAFSALT trainees and the needs of the broader base population. To summarise, 31SQN manages base-wide support activities to enable other units on the base to effectively and efficiently conduct Induction, Initial Employment Trade and Postgraduate training. The squadron incorporates the role of coordination for Air Force Reserve members in the Riverina region. Reserve staff from 31SQN fill key roles at RAAF Wagga, such as Manager and OIC of the RAAF Wagga Heritage Centre and management of the Static Display Aircraft for the base. 31SQN provides support to deployed

units and interfaces with the local community to promote the ADF and foster good relations. Under the Base Accountabilities Model (BAM) the Commanding Officer of 31SQN is the Air Base Executive Officer (ABXO) and reports to the Senior Australian Defence Force Officer (SADFO) who authorises common base activities and has the lead on interaction with the local community.

HISTORY OF NO 31 SQUADRON No. 31 Squadron was formed at the Forest Hill base near Wagga Wagga, NSW, on 14 August 1942. After equipping with the Bristol Beaufighter and being brought up to strength, it moved to Batchelor in the Northern Territory in October and then to its new home at Coomalie Creek, south of Darwin in November. The squadron’s first combat operation took place on 17 November 1942. Over the next two years, 31 Squadron flew ground attack sorties against the Japanese in Timor and the Netherlands East Indies, as well as antishipping patrols and convoy protection missions. One of its greatest successes was the raid on Penfoei on 2 December 1942, when the Beaufighters caught 40 Japanese aircraft on the ground. Without loss to themselves, they destroyed eighteen and damaged many more. In November 1944, the squadron deployed to Noemfoor, from where it flew two convoy protection missions before moving again, to Morotai,

Setting up on Tarakan in May 1945, 31 Squadron carried out strikes in support of the Australian landings in Borneo and Brunei in June and the operations that followed. After the Japanese surrendered on 15 August, the squadron dropped leaflets over the Halmaheras to inform the garrison of those islands that the war was over. 1 SECURITY FORCES SQUADRON DETACHMENT WAGGA

In 2011, Chief of Air Force outlined his intent for a balanced, integrated and air minded Security Forces capability to prepare for and conduct security measures across the full spectrum of Air Force operations. He directed that SECFOR must protect Air Force personnel, assets and capabilities in domestic, deployed and expeditionary operations that were self-reliant operations, as a coalition partner or as a coalition leader.

tasks – from domestic security through to war fighting. The transition from our current organisation into the new SECFOR structure represents the most significant structural change within the Air Force security and ground defence families since Vietnam.

The establishment of these Squadrons is only part of the development of new Security Forces organisation. The 04 Jul 13 also marked the disbandment of the Security Police Mustering, and subsequent creation of two new musterings, Air Force Security (AFSEC) and Air Force Police (AFPOL). Service Policing has been an element of the Air Force since the original RAAF Provost Service in 1930, and has conducted security and policing roles for the Air Force both domestically and operationally since that time. RAAF Service Police have been an integral part of almost all operational deployments involving the RAAF. The development of the AFSEC and AFPOL musterings is the next step in the Service Police As a result, on 04 Jul 13, security in the RAAF history, recognising the different and unique underwent a significant change, where three contribution that security and policing make to Security Forces Squadrons were established, the Air Force. representing the new security forces organisation within Air Force, which have been RAAF Base Wagga is supported by a designed to meet our airpower needs. This new detachment of 1 Security Forces Squadron structure provides coherency, standardisation, personnel from No 95 Wing, comprising of Air flexibility and responsiveness to deliver the Force Police. The Air Force Police aim to achieve required effect across the range of security a safe and secure environment at RAAF Base

Wagga through active community policing, conducting Service Police patrols and traffic enforcement throughout stand to and stand down hours, and further patrols of recreation and living in areas of base. Active policing patrols of the base are conducted in order to assist Commanders by solving issues through early intervention. Air Force Police can deal with these minor issues on the spot where there is a requirement for simple corrective discipline; where something doesn’t need to be elevated through the disciplinary system, in order to positively affect and modify behaviour. This method of active policing allows Air Force Police to detect any criminal activity a great deal earlier, effectively keeping base policing proactive, enabling Air Force Police to engage in a Service Police Investigation, or to refer an incident to a higher investigative authority earlier and greatly increase our ability to determine the facts of a matter at hand. As a result Air Force Police can effectively assist, and be a resource to, Commanders and their Executives in the maintenance of discipline within their units. Ultimately the purpose of the DFDA is to maintain good order and discipline, and AFPOL play an inherent part in that to assist unit Commanders maintain good order and discipline within their units.

RAAF WAGGA HERITAGE CENTRE

The Heritage Centre at RAAF Base Wagga was originally opened in 1995 as the ‘RAAF Museum - Wagga Annex’ to provide a focus on the RAAF’s involvement in the Riverina and to provide access to the history and memorabilia of military aviation and military training. The facility was closed for building repairs in 2003 and re-opened as the newly named ‘RAAF Wagga Heritage Centre’ in 2010. As the last remaining Riverina World War II Base within a network of bases incorporating Narrandera, Temora, Deniliquin, Tocumwal and Uranquinty; this Heritage Centre represents the only repository for regional specific RAAF memorabilia.

Memorabilia, photographs and documents on display are intended to represent the activities of the wider region during World War II and the subsequent activities at RAAF Base Wagga. The process of collecting and maintaining appropriate history and memorabilia is on going and the Centre strives to maintain pace with modern restorative processes to present the RAAF in a positive light. With the advent of numerous anniversaries of significant military events in recent years, the Centre has become an important adjunct to the promotion of present day RAAF activities and tourism for Wagga. The Heritage Centre supports numerous RAAF Associations and will continue to maintain these strong historical regional specific links. The high standard of the Heritage Centre and surrounds are a tribute to the many personnel who spent countless hours (often in their own time) in establishing and maintaining the Centre. The Wagga community and service clubs and local businesses contributed significant resources into the development of the Centre and surrounds, and donated some of the original memorabilia and displays. The original RAAF Museum - Wagga Annex was a concept proposed by a group of enthusiasts headed by Wing Commander Brian Duddington and progressed through

43

the significant efforts of RAAF Base Wagga personnel, particularly Flight Sergeant Doug Vickers and Mrs Gabi McCormack. Ongoing maintenance and administration of the Centre and exhibits are now the responsibility of a composite team of serving, ex-serving, Defence Civilian and contractor personnel, who willingly volunteer their own time to ensure that this important link with the Riverina is maintained.

FEATURES OF THE HERITAGE CENTRE The housing of the Heritage Centre in the old guardhouse is significant, as this was the first building established at RAAF Base Wagga in 1940. It also represents the most accessible point to the public. The guardhouse itself has an interesting history. Its 50 years of functioning as a guardhouse and telephone switch provided the Base with effective communications and a secure access point. It’s imposing external structure and internal cells also served as a deterrent to thousands of trainees and apprentices who might be tempted to transgress the strict discipline codes of the RAAF. One of the striking features of the Base is the static aircraft at the front gate, next to the Heritage Centre. These aircraft represent over 50 years of RAAF flying history and are accessible for the public to view and photograph. On display are: ´´

Canberra Bomber which saw active service in Vietnam

´´

Meteor which was the first jet engined fighter introduced into RAAF service

´´

Sabre which was a second generation fighter and deployed on stand-by during the Malayan Emergency.

´´

Mirage which was a third generation fighter and was involved in deployments through Asia.

´´

Winjeel which was the post-war initial trainer for the RAAF.

Outside the Heritage Centre, are specially developed gardens and picnic areas. A commemorative section has been developed for No. 31 Squadron Beaufighters formed in Wagga in 1943 and disbanded at the close of WWII , the only operational squadron to be based at RAAF Base Wagga. Inside the Heritage Centre are important photographs and memorabilia to represent over 50 years of service to the RAAF and the local region. Some elements of history have been classified into trade training, catering and supply, ceremonial and the apprentice training for ease of viewing. Other important elements of the history of RAAF Wagga’s functions are spread throughout the display rooms.

RAAF BASE WAGGA HERITAGE CENTRE RAAF Base Wagga Sturt Highway Forest Hill NSW 2651 Open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays 10am to 4pm. Entry is free. In addition to the Heritage Centre, RAAF Base Wagga has a display of static aircraft at the front gate which can be viewed at any time. In May 2011, a refurbishment program was carried out on the aircraft, to improve their condition for the next 10 to 15 years.

RAAF GUIDE

HISTORY OF RAAF BASE WAGGA

»» Construction of the RAAF Base during 1940. Most of these buildings are still standing and utilised on the base.

»» An American B-17 of the briefly lodging 70th Bombardment Squadron 1942

»» Beaufighters of No. 31 SQN over the Riverina 1942

The origins of the Base can be traced back to May 1939 when Prime Minister Robert Menzies announced that Forest Hill outside Wagga Wagga would become the site of the RAAF’s new flying school (No 2 Flying Training School). The Air Board described the area as being suitable in terms of climate, geography and accompanying infrastructure that included a road passing the site to join the main Melbourne-Sydney/Canberra road and a railway siding nearby. RAAF Station Forest Hill became part of the larger Empire Air Flying Training Scheme (EATS) in the Riverina, which in turn was part of a network of flying training across the Commonwealth. The Riverina units comprised of 10EFTS at Temora, 1 Air Observer School at Cootamundra, 5SFTS at Uranquinty, 7SFTS at Deniliquin and 8EFTS at Narrandera. RAAF Base Wagga is the only Base from the impressive Riverina war effort still operational today. In 1942, Headquarters No2 Training Group was established at Romano’s Commercial Hotel in Wagga Wagga to co-ordinate flying training at the RAAF Schools across the Riverina. This site still operates as a hotel today, but there is little evidence of its strategically important past.

The Riverine Club served the Forces by providing exceptional messing facilities for the officers. The Riverine Club still welcomes military officers as honorary members. It was intended from the outset that Forest Hill was to be a permanent base with the main functional areas built of brick (such as the guardhouse - now the Heritage Centre) but with the pressures of war and the rapid expansion of the RAAF many temporary wood structures were built. The Officers Mess is a lasting legacy to the style and type of ‘temporary’ building erected during the war. Building commenced in 1940 and it is a testament to the war effort that by 01 July 1940, the basic infrastructure was in place for No 2 Flying Training School (2FTS) to commence flying operations with Wirraways and Ansons. RAAF Station Forest Hill was symbolically commissioned on 31 July 1940 when Commanding Officer WGCDR F.R.W Scherger hoisted the RAAF Ensign for the first time (later Air Chief Marshal Sir Fredrick Scherger KBE, CB, DSO, and AFC and ultimately rose to Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee from 1961-1966). Another famous Airman to serve with 2FTS was William (Bill) Newton who was awarded a posthumous VC for service with 22SQN in New Guinea in 1943. PLTOFF Newton was posted into 2FTS on 16 Dec 1940 as a flying instructor and departed RAAF Base Wagga as a FLTLT on 5 Nov 1941, for the short trip to the newly established 5SFTS at Uranquinty. The main thoroughfare on the base is named in deference to Newton’s service to the Base and his country. Other renowned

45

graduates of 2FTS were John Gorton who would become Prime Minister in 1968 and Clive Caldwall (later GPCAPT DSO, DFC and Bar) who was the leading Australian air ace of World War 2 with 28.5 enemy aircraft accredited as shot down. 2FTS moved to Tocumwal on 20 Oct 1943, ending the era of intermediate flying training at RAAF Base Wagga. Other flying units were raised and/or rotated through the Base during the war. On 30 Mar 1942 the USAAC 4th Air Depot arrived to provide ground support and prepare for the arrival of 70th Bombardment Squadron on 21 Apr 1942. The impressive four engined B-17 bombers only lodged at the base until 16th May when they hastily departed for the Pacific. The lasting legacy of the Americans was the building of Hangar 84, which is still the largest single structure on the Base and is renowned for the largest expanse of parquetry flooring in the southern hemisphere. More short lived lodgers were No.’s 60 and 61 Reserve Squadrons formed in Jan 1942 to give staff pilots training on operational tactics. No 60 Squadron moved to Cootamundra in Feb 1942 and 61 Squadron was disbanded. In August 1942 No. 31 (Intruder) Squadron Beaufighter pilots formed at the Base under the Command of Squadron Leader Charles Read (later Air Marshall Sir Charles Frederick Read, KBE, CB, DFC, AFC) in order to conduct their pre-deployment flying training. The squadron was transferred to the Northern Territory in November 1942. In deference to the significant war effort of 31 SQN and the close association with the 31 SQN veterans, the Base Support Unit was renamed to 31SQN (City of Wagga Wagga) in July 2010. RAAF Base Wagga is now 31 SQN veterans’ home base as it symbolically represents the roots of the Squadron. In

»» The technical training continuum with jet aircraft to work on

January 1942 No.5 Operational Training Unit was formed at Forest Hill to train bomber pilots and navigators for service in World War 2. 5OTU was transferred to Tocumwal in October 1943 ending the familiar sight of war planes over the skies of Wagga. The enduring legacy for the Base was created with formation of No.5 Aircraft Depot on 23 Mar 1942. 5AD’s role was to repair and service aircraft and receive aircraft from the factories and prepare them for front line duties in the Pacific theatre. The massive resources required for these maintenance and engineering functions precipitated significant expansion of the base. By 1944 the unit had a strength of 59 officers, 1687 airman and 227 airwomen – the largest contingent of any unit over the history of the Base. Significant hospital facilities were established when No 1 RAAF Hospital moved from Laverton VIC in 1942. The original brick building stood the test of time and was only recently demolished.

5AD was disbanded in 1946, but the engineering facilities (including the Bellman Hangars) were an attraction for the engineering training schools which were being disbanded around the country. In March 1946 No.1 Engineering Training School moved to RAAF Base Wagga from Ascot Vale in VIC and was renamed RAAF Ground Training School. This established RAAF Wagga’s new role as the centre for aircraft trade training in the Air Force. The unit was renamed RAAF School of Technical Training (RAAFSTT) in 1952. training unit within the RAAF as it has been continuously graduating aircraft technical personnel to the Australian Defence Force and other nations since 1948. The Air Force Apprentice scheme operated until and 1993 with thousands of young men and women trained at RAAFSTT. Apprentices commenced training at age 15 (later changed to 17) and remained at RAAF Base Wagga for up to three years before graduating as highly regarded tradespeople. Life wasn’t easy for the young men (later women as the first female apprentice graduated in Dec 1987) as they had to contend with separation from family, the military lifestyle and climatic extremities of Wagga. Once they acclimatised, some had the confidence to try and circumvent the system with shenanigans which are still legendary amongst the many intake reunions. Today a different era of technical training takes place with shorter courses more aligned to national training standards delivered by contracted instructors. The success of post-war technical training spurred the Air Force to initiate a variety of other trade and job related training activities on the Base. From March 1956 to July 1957 No.4 National Service Training Unit was established on the Base. The National Service Act provided for compulsory call-up for males 18 years and over for a period of 176 continuous days in response to conflicts in Korea and Suez crisis. The RAAF Wagga Nasho’s mainly undertook trade affiliated trade training within RAAFSTT. From 1954 RAAFSTT was responsible for Junior Equipment and Administration Training (JEAT). This non-technical training role gradually expanded to a point in 1996 which facilitated the formation of an independent unit, RAAF School of Clerical and Supply Training (later School of Administration Logistics Training - RAAFSALT). Instructor training was once embedded within RAAFSTT, but formed an independent unit from 1985 until 2004 which included airmen and promotional training. Instructional training function was then morphed into RAAFSALT when the unit was disbanded. The School of PostGraduate Studies moved from Melbourne to Wagga in 2002 and now conducts all the promotion training for airmen and officers. Base Squadron Wagga was formed in 1956 to support all the Base activities. Today this task is performed jointly by No 31 (City of Wagga Wagga) Squadron and Defence Support. Wagga. No.1 Recruit Training Unit (1RTU) was based at RAAF Wagga from Dec 1960 until May 1964, when it was relocated to RAAF Base EDINBURGH in SA. In a twist of historical fate 1RTU returned to RAAF Wagga in 2007, to occupy a purpose built facility which signified the largest infrastructure development and capital expenditure of the Base in the post war period. The biggest post war challenge for the Base occurred on April 17 1997, when the Minister for Defence announced to the local community his intention to close RAAF Base Wagga as part of a rationalisation of the Australian Defence Force. This announcement precipitated a quick and very vocal reaction by the Wagga community. An almost instant galvanisation of broader support was echoed through all levels of the community and passed onto military officials and the politicians through the ‘Save Our Base Task Force’. By 2000 this decision was rescinded and the Base is now unimpeded in continuing to support the training needs of the Australian Defence Force and reinforcing the social and economic relationships with the local community. This vocal community

galvanisation reflects how RAAF Base Wagga has always had a close association with Wagga, whether assisting at civic events, charity fund raising and disaster relief (most recently the 2012 floods) or the myriad of clubs or associations members participate in. In turn Wagga has equipped, fed, entertained, accommodated and hosted RAAF personnel and families. More recently the community has provided the Base with a viable workforce as more defence functions have been contracted and civilianised. Since 1940 personnel from RAAF Base Wagga have served their country with distinction with impact felt in conflicts ranging from the skies over of Europe and Pacific through to the dust and heat of Afghanistan. RAAF Base Wagga will continue to provide the training and skills that are the foundation on the ADF with its philosophy of ‘Airpower Starts Here’. RAAF Base Wagga is now the largest ground training base in the RAAF servicing not only the training needs of the Air Force, but also the Army and Navy and some regional defence forces. All airmen and officers sometime in their career will attend at least a couple of the courses at RAAF Base Wagga. Wing Commander David Lavicka Base Historian

THE VICTORY MEMORIAL GARDENS

The beautiful Victory Memorial Gardens are a fitting place to remember those who served our country. The establishment of the garden and the erection of the Memorial Arch, which lists over 1000 names of soldiers who served, was largely due to the enthusiasm and persistence of Terence Byrnes, a former Mayor of Wagga Wagga, who had served in France as part of an Artillery Brigade.

Designed in the 1920s by Thomas Kerr, Chief Landscape Gardener of Sydney’s Botanic Gardens, the Victory Memorial Gardens reflect the respect residents have for the military, and acknowledge the long association the defence forces have had with the city through the Army Recruit Training Centre (Kapooka) and RAAF Base Wagga. The original plan of the Victory Memorial Gardens is to be seen in the Museum of the Riverina. A tree planted in the Victory Memorial Gardens on 24th January 1984 honours the 100th birthday of Wagga Wagga born Field Marshal Sir Thomas Albert Blamey, GBE, KCB, CMG, DSO, ED; the only Australian to date to attain the rank of Field Marshall. Also, a small tree and flowerbed was planted in the Victory Memorial Gardens by the then Lieutenant Colonel (later Brigadier) K.P.Outridge, Commanding Officer of Kapooka, together with Group Captain N.F. Lamb, Officer Commanding RAAF Forest Hill, on 24th February 1965 in honour of the late Sir Winston Churchill who had passed away the month before.

55

The Memorial Archway was unveiled by “Fighting Charlie” Major-General C.F.Fox on Anzac Day 1927.

THROUGHOUT THE PARKLANDS ARE MANY OTHER MEMORIALS AND A PATH LINED WITH POPLAR TREES KNOWN AS ANZAC AVENUE.

The Eternal Flame beneath the Main Memorial Arch, projects a larger flare during the day, dimming to a pleasant glow at night. The Eternal Flame was built to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the landing of Australian soldiers at Gallipoli and to honour the men and women who had served and are currently serving in other campaigns.

The Cenotaph, designed by Messrs Pitt & Morrow of Wagga Wagga and unveiled by Brigadier-General Thomas Blamey on 17th Sept. 1922 contains the names of local soldiers who were killed.

Commemorates the 50th Anniversary of RAAF Base Wagga which commenced operations on 1st July 1940.

ARTS PRECINCT From traditional to contemporary, there is something to suit the tastes of all arts and culture enthusiasts in Wagga Wagga. With its two public art galleries, including the world-class National Art Glass Collection, two museums, three theatres and two outdoor amphitheatres, the diversity is unparalleled in regional Australia.

Conveniently located in the same precinct, you’ll find the fabulous Museum of the Riverina inside the Historic Council Chambers. The Museum is housed over two locations and the Historic Council Chambers site was originally the City’s Town Hall and Municipal Offices as well as the seat of Local Government until 1999 when it was converted into the Museum. Now it’s a space for travelling exhibitions and a meeting venue.

Situated in the heart of the city, the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery exhibits an exciting range of touring shows and locally developed exhibitions from the Gallery’s extensive collections, as well as the work of Riverina based artists. It is also the home of the Margaret Carnegie Print Collection and the National Art Glass Collection.

The Museum’s second site, near the Botanic Gardens, hosts the Sporting Hall of Fame, established in 1993, it recognises the outstanding achievements of Wagga Wagga athletes and sports people who have excelled in their field at the national and international level.

The National Art Glass Collection is housed in the National Art Glass Gallery. This prestigious title is due to the national significance of this collection as it reflects contemporary art glass practice from its development in the 1960’s to the present. Acquisitions are made each year and there are approximately 500 works in the collection.

Information on exhibitions can be found at wagga.nsw.gov.au/museum For a cultural journey, try one of Wagga Wagga’s heritage walks. There are two to choose from each winding around significant buildings and sites in the City. Take the opportunity to wander around the Wiradjuri Walking Track, named after Wagga Wagga’s indigenous inhabitants.

Admission to both the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery and Art Glass Gallery is free and you can visit www.waggaartgallery.org to find out more about current exhibitions and opening times.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN WAGGA

WAGGA WAGGA’S FAMOUS “FIVE O’CLOCK WAVE” As with many large cities with a long and proud history, Wagga Wagga has developed its own “urban legends” which seem to have taken a life of their own. One such myth is the legendary “Five o’clock Wave”, said to wash down the Murrumbidgee River near Wagga Wagga Beach at precisely 5 o’clock each day, following upstream releases of water from the Blowering and Burrinjuck dams. Although the timing is fixed, the size and spread of the wave downstream is said to vary due to factors such as water levels. Stories about its international attraction vary, but one such tale is that in 1910 during a brief visit to Australia in the first powered flight to arrive in the country, legendary magician Harry Houdini flew the first plane ever to land in Wagga Wagga with the sole purpose of catching the legendary sight. The story continues that unfortunately, due to the drought condition which was the predicament of most of the country at the time, the Great Houdini left the city disappointed.

WAGGA WAGGA BEACH On the southern bank of the Murrumbidgee, just a five minute walk from the city centre, is Wagga Wagga Beach. The river and more specifically Wagga Wagga Beach have a strong association with the City’s history. Explorer Charles Sturt disembarked at the site on 5th Dec 1829 during his expedition to determine if Australia had an “inland sea”. It’s now a perfect location for a picnic with its undercover seating and free BBQ area. Today, rather than sleeping on the beach beneath up-turned longboats as Sturt and his men did, modern explorers of Wagga Wagga will be pleased to discover an exceptionally well appointed caravan park with cabins is now beautifully positioned to take advantage of the great Murrumbidgee views on offer. You will still see monuments to days gone by – the Wagga Wagga Beach Life Saving Club was started in 1927 and disbanded in 1971 and throughout its long, proud history, not a single person drowned. The Club was at its strongest during the 30s and it was the ambition of many teenage boys to join the Club during this period and there was a long waiting list to be a part of it. Location: Johnson St, Wagga Wagga NSW 2650

WAGGA WAGGA BOTANIC GARDENS Wagga Wagga’s Botanic Gardens have grown to be among the finest in Australia. Lots of different types of spectacular gardens have been lovingly prepared to take advantage of Wagga Wagga’s annual median rainfall of 575mm (26 inches). Whilst many beds include traditional roses, stunning camellias and exotic succulents, this is possibly the only garden in the world where you can enjoy being completely enveloped in a rainforest gully, with a drought-proof model Waterwise Garden right beside it. For families, the children’s adventure playground and open-air

dining facility provides visitors with eight free electric barbecues and comfortable seating for over 100 people. For those wishing to walk off their outdoor lunch, the Botanic Gardens Fitness Trail which commences near the exquisite Tree Chapel and finishes near the Wagga Wagga Music Bowl, is the ideal place to wander. With kiosk, restaurant, a choice of three children’s playgrounds, Wagga Wagga’s magnificent Botanic Gardens is a must see. Location: Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens, Lord Baden Powell Drive, Willans Hill, Wagga Wagga.

WAGGA WAGGA’S MINI ZOO & FREE FLIGHT AVIARY Located in the Botanic Gardens, Wagga Wagga’s Mini Zoo is maintained by Wagga Wagga City Council and is the perfect place for both visitors and local residents to relax. Entry is free and children can buy a small bag of pellets before entering to feed the animals, who very much welcome the attention!

The Mini Zoo’s large paddocks entertain an assorted range of native and domestic animals. Wallabies, kangaroos, emus, donkeys and goats jostle for visitors’ attention alongside wandering peacocks and ducks. The Mini Zoo also houses one of the best collections of birds outside a capital city zoo. Black satin bower birds, stunning parrots, rare pheasants and peacocks live inside the superb Free Flight Enclosure. Some of the walkways are elevated, allowing visitors to look through the tree tops for a bird’s eye view of the canopy.

SUMOSALAD

Then again, if it was possible to find an even more traditional location to enjoy Chinese tucker, generations of Australians from the country and city alike have looked no further than their local RSL. Among several dining options, the Wagga RSL has Pearl Chinese Restaurant which does an unmissable meal. An a la carte assortment of foods from Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam is offered to diners together with the more familiar Chinese menu favourites. Book to avoid disappointment and remember that the take away option is available. Ph 69213624. There’s also the RSL Bistro – open for breakfast, lunch and dinner – where you can find all those traditional and favourite dishes we love including steaks, seafood, chicken, great schnitzels and more. For fresh, tasty snacks and light meals that will impress, try the Club Café. Whether it’s for coffee, a salad, gourmet sandwich or scrumptious cake, the Club Café hits the spot. Delicious, fresh food, served with a smile. Wagga RSL provides the highest level of club service you’d expect from the premier RSL Club in country NSW.

At the other end of the spectrum, SumoSalad is an idea of tailored for today. The creators were a couple of young Sydneysiders who wanted to create a healthy eating alternative for all Australians. The SumoSalad “Design Your Own Salad” concept was the first of its kind in the country and possibly the world, and was a great success. The Sumo Salad menu now includes Sushi pasta salads, wraps, soups and toasties.

THE WILLIAM FARRER HOTEL

Locals and visitors agree that the best pub to get a view of the magnificent Murrumbidgee River is at the Duke of Kent Hotel. Finalist in the BEST STEAK VENUE in 2010 and again this year plus BEST Casual Dining Venue/ BEST Budget Pub-Style Accommodation and Chris Egan is Individual Property Owner of the Year Finalist in the AHA Awards for Excellence. The open air bar and deck area is a fantastic place to have lunch. Traditional pub food or dine in style in the restaurant. Great food and a warm welcome! Large plasma screens beam in live sport and at night, DJs and live bands grace the Duke’s stage until late.

Near Wagga Wagga Railway Station the William Farrer Hotel is all about great food, great rooms and great service. It also has icy cold brews on tap and the heartiest seafood basket in Wagga Wagga, all at reasonable prices. Open for breakfast/lunch and dinner, the warm and friendly atmosphere of the Farrer is also a perfect place to stay the night if you’re travelling. It’s a family run institution run by the Barnhill family of rugby league fame.

CACHE Stepping through the doors and the lime-green modern décor of Cache makes you feel like you’re getting healthier already. Don’t be put off by the healthy stereotype though. There are plenty of taste treats on the menu. A newly opened smoothie bar inside Cache is just as enticing as the menu, which with countless tasty flavour combinations you can invent exactly what you feel like from the freshest of ingredients.

RAAF GUIDE

Some people just can’t orient themselves properly in a new town without knowing exactly where the best steaks are to be had. Baylis Street in the CBD has quite a few restaurants which offer locally raised beef, but there’s always the suspicion when dining somewhere for the first time that the chef won’t nail the sizzle of your steak to absolute mouthwatering perfection the first time around. HOG’S BREATH CAFÉ That’s why when travelling in Australia a Hog’s Breath Café is such a welcome sight. Credited with developing Prime Rib steaks in Australia, there’s not a more tender, mouth-watering steak to be had anywhere. If you’ve always thought of going to a Hog’s Breath Café lately and just haven’t got around to it, now’s the time to give into that urge.

THE MONTEZUMA MEXICAN RESTAURANT The Montezuma Mexican Restaurant offers fully licensed casual relaxed dining for the whole family. Meals are prepared fresh daily using locally grown produce where possible and cooked in convection ovens in what is termed senora style, mild, and perhaps with a little sour cream on the side. But for those who enjoy a hotter taste, that’s where you can step in and order hot or extra hot sauce, Texas style.

IL CORSO’S Further along Baylis Street, reward time spent browsing through the stores with a luscious gourmet pizza from Il Corso’s. Priding itself in creating culinary tastes rich in heritage, if an authentic traditional thinand-crispy base drizzled with mozzarella cheese, olives, market-sought prosciutto and peppers is your thing, their doors are open.

THE RULES CLUB The Rules Club can cater for all your tastebuds, with a choice from our a la carté menu, a self-serve buffet and fantastic daily specials. There is certainly something to suit all tastes. Our friendly staff will make you feel relaxed and welcome with Bistro 2000 open daily. Lunch is served from 12pm - 2pm and dinner, 6pm - 9pm.There is always a salad bar and dessert on offer, along with a great choice of both Chinese & Australian meals. On Fridays, it’s our “all you can eat” buffet, three course meal deal and it wouldn’t be a Sunday without a traditional Sunday roast.

Also in the Fitzmaurice Street end of Wagga Wagga’s city centre, between the Court House and the Murrumbidgee River you’ll find some good pubs within easy walking distance of one another. THE THIRSTY CROW KITCHEN The Thirsty Crow Kitchen specialises in an array of standout meals; from Craft Pizza’s to Charcuterie Boards. All of these are a little bit quirky and pair up perfectly with our brews. Antipasto Platters, Cheese Boards and many other meals are also a great choice to nibble on whilst you’re here.

LA PORCHETTA For great Italian food you cannot miss La Porchetta, half way down Baylis Street, with a full range restaurant menu including pizza, pasta, steak, chicken, fish and salad. La Porchetta has something for everyone. plus a friendly welcoming
