FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK TAG’S BIGGEST EVENT OF THE YEAR For the 4th consecutive year I have had the pleasure of presenting the State of the Industry report at the Georgia Technology Summit. Even in this tough economy, there were some positive signs to point to in respect to how our state is faring. For example, Georgia ranks 10th in the nation when it comes to high-tech employment, boasting nearly 180,000 jobs. Also, 478 new high-tech establishments were created, which should be a strong indicator for employment expansion in future years. Our “Where Georgia Leads” primary research study revealed that Georgia ranks in the top 5 in software, telecom, financial technologies, and security. It’s my hope that our rigorous analysis and findings will encourage private and public stakeholders to assign more resources to areas where our state may hold a competitive advantage. Our second primary research study examined how companies are sustaining growth and profitability. Georgia high-growth companies told us that they remained aggressive by: introducing new products; hiring available talent; diversified into new markets and spent more on marketing and used more off-shore resources. In contrast, companies with slow or no growth implemented strategies of contraction. If you want to learn more about the state of Georgia’s technology industry, you can download the entire 200+ page report by going to http://www.tagonline.org/soir.php.

Paul Terlemezian has over 30 years of

business experience and nearly 20 years of alliances and direct sales experience in the high technology and training industries. He has worked for Digital Equipment Corporation, IBM (Catapult Division), Sterling Software (KnowledgeWare), Achievement Plus and with Sylvan Learning Companies that were focused on eLearning. He has designed, implemented and managed strategic alliances for training, technology and consulting companies.

Paul Terlemezian Founder iFive Alliances, LLC.

He earned his M.S. in Mathematics at Northeastern University in Boston and taught Differential Equations and Calculus to freshman while doing so. Later, he joined DEC as a technical instructor and traveled around the world teaching clients how to use and program computer systems. He also taught a course on Operating System design to undergraduate computer science majors at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He has managed customer training businesses for several companies and founded iFive Alliances in June of 2003. Paul and his wife Sherry are empty-nesters living in Sandy Springs.

What is the most encouraging thing you see for the future of the tech industry in our region? Our region has a tradition of support for the use of technology as an accelerator of learning that stimulates economic development. This is reflected in tax credit programs, public-private alliances and the strength of the professional associations that focus on learning and technology.

How long have you been a member of the Technology Association of Georgia? Since 2003. How has membership in the association been of value to you and your business? 1.

The people I have met have become friends, clients, business partners, sources of information and valued connections. They have been angel investors, CEO’s, job-seekers, sales people, CIO’s, middle managers and people entering the field. The breadth of TAG’s value allows me to benefit from many types of people. The Annual Technology Summit and the Member Only Field Trips have become priority events for my calendar. The exposure to emerging technologies and the opportunity to get behind the scenes in organizations such as Saint Joseph’s Hospital, The Weather Channel, the CDC, Turner, Delta and McKesson have allowed me to see and experience a wide variety of technology applications. This allows me to envision new applications for my business and my clients. TAG has also allowed me to learn about the various components of economic development within our state. I’ve been able to attend meetings where I have learned about the legislative process, the corporate development process and the business issues that motivate investments in technology. My volunteer work as a TAG Ambassador has given me the opportunity to help TAG while continuing to gain personal and professional visibility.

TAG Society of interest?

My society of interest is the one that I founded – The Workplace Learning Society. However, I also try to attend events offered by the TAG Recruiting Society – and not to find a job or business – but to learn! The program content of the TAG Recruiting Society is consistently outstanding. I think it is because recruiters are working to fill jobs that are on the leading edge and therefore the program content needs to appeal to people that are looking to the future and yet are grounded in reality. In any case, I recommend these events to anyone that wants to keep current on practical applications of emerging technologies.

PROFITING FROM CHANGE Amanda Setili, Managing Partner, Setili& Associates

The world is changing fast. Most economic growth is outside the U.S., markets are turbulent, new technologies are created daily, and our culture is becoming more global and interconnected. What can your company do to be "in the right place, at the right time"? Let's review five keys to success: Amanda Setili is managing partner of Setili & Associates, a firm that works with Fortune 500 firms to improve business performance. Her clients include The Home Depot, Delta Air Lines, Wachovia, Cox Communications, Wal-Mart and The Coca-Cola Company, as well as growth companies. As an experienced thought partner, Setili & Associates helps clients leverage their distinct assets and capabilities to produce lasting competitive advantage, zeroing in on key actions that will improve profit, performance and growth. For more information about Setili & Associates, visit www.setili.com, or reach Amanda at Amanda@Setili.com or (404)378-0400.

1. Live in your customers' world 2. Conduct small experiments 3. Collaborate with purpose 4. Rethink "headquarters" and work across geographies 5. Set clear direction, but stay flexible Successful companies are those most adept at understanding how customer needs are likely to change. They choose a clear path, and adjust their course as events unfold. As the explorers who set out to find new trade passages did centuries ago, they plan a route, and refine the map as they go. Let's elaborate on these five keys to success: 1. Live in your customers' world Use your own product or service, and those of your competitors, just as a customer would. Visit customers and watch them buying, using, maintaining and disposing of your product. Talk to customers about the changes they are seeing in their competitive environment and in the economics of their business. When Delta Air Lines wanted to improve the customer experience, they asked top management to “fly like a customer.” Flying like a customer meant buying tickets online, waiting through long security lines and sitting in cramped coach seats. Management experienced some of their customers' frustrations firsthand, and made changes to improve satisfaction. 2. Conduct small experiments More and more, we’re hearing that companies are simply “trying more things” and watching to see which ones work. Intercontinental Hotels created multiple designs for their new Holiday Inn reservations website, put them all online, and found out within a few hours which design customers preferred. In another example, The Coca-Cola Company realized that Christmas season marketing efforts were being duplicated in every market. Though tailoring to local markets is important, they saw that many best practices could be leveraged regionally or globally. Coke experimented by asking a team from Germany to develop a global marketing approach for the season. The team was successful in collecting and employing the best ideas from around the world, and this tactic is being expanded. 3. Collaborate with purpose New electronic media increasingly enable customers to participate in marketing, product development, technical support, sales and more. This process reduces cost (when customers perform work previously done by employees) and allows companies to learn from customers at a far faster rate. Similarly, smart companies are increasingly asking employees to collaborate across geographies and organizational lines. Cisco has adopted a cross-functional "councils and boards" structure. The system enables Cisco to better address emerging markets and to combine technologies to offer the customer a more complete solution. Extensive use of social networking and videoconferencing tools has cut down on executive travel even while increasing innovation and execution speed. Collaboration helps good ideas bubble up from more sources, and accelerates learning. 4. Rethink “headquarters” and work across geographies Take strong steps to stay in touch with what’s happening in dispersed geographic markets. Many companies, such as Halliburton, Accenture, and computer maker Lenovo now have no real headquarters location, spreading top executives among several geographies. For example, Lenovo's top management team is spread between Singapore, North Carolina, Hong Kong, Seattle, and India. The company’s top 20 leaders meet monthly, each time in a different place. These approaches help keep companies from developing "tunnel vision" in a single market. 5. Set a clear direction, but stay flexible Successful companies paint a clear and compelling picture of the future they wish to create for customers, employees, investors, channel partners, and other stakeholders. By painting this picture, they align decision making, and greatly increase the chance that the picture will become reality. At the same time, they stay flexible. They listen continuously, put feedback loops in place, establish and monitor metrics, and adjust their plans as things change.
