DISTRICT-WIDE FIRE BAN
THE TRUCKEE FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT IMPLEMENTED A DISTRICT-WIDE ORDINANCE TO BAN BACKYARD-TYPE CAMPFIRES DURING FIRE SEASON ON MAY 24, 2021 AND IS IN PLACE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE As we’ve all seen, the fire danger in California has continued to increase, and the Truckee area is no exception. Many of the most destructive fires in state history have occurred in recent years. Each year, the Truckee Fire Protection District responds to unattended or improperly extinguished residential campfires that escape the fire ring and start a wildfire. If this happens on a windy day, it can be devastating to our community.
CAUSES OF EXTREME FIRE DANGER
WHAT IS ALLOWED
The buildup of dry fuels
Gas campfires
Significant drought
Gas portable fire pits
Increased human presence
Gas BBQs
Visitors who don’t understand the danger
Pellet-burning devices
Escaped campfires
Wood pellet fuel-based BBQs and smokers that are well contained — all particles must be fully consumed to ash prior to disposal
WHAT IS BANNED Residential campfires/bonfires that burn anything other than gas BBQs that burn solid fuel (like charcoal briquettes, wood or lump charcoal) Big Green Egg BBQs Briquette fuel-based smokers Wood shavings that are generally added for flavor to smokers and gas grills (like applewood and others)

ANNIVERSARY FEATURE
Golf is Back at Tahoe Donner By ALI DICKSON
Set among towering pines, meandering creeks and stunning alpine views, Tahoe Donner Golf Course has been a beloved piece of the community for more than 40 years, repeatedly voted the “Best Golf Course in North Lake Tahoe and Truckee” by Sierra Sun readers. Following the 2019 season, the golf course began to undergo
a $2.2M improvement project focused on replacing each green and improving its playability, pace of play and enjoyment. We are thrilled to help celebrate Tahoe Donner’s 50th anniversary by welcoming our community back to our beautiful alpine golf course.

THE HISTORY Tahoe Donner Golf Course was one of the association’s earliest amenities. Following Tahoe Donner’s opening in 1971, the front nine holes of the golf course opened for play in 1975 along with Tee Dee’s Restaurant. The back nine opened a year later, and Tahoe Donner began operating an 18-hole course in 1976. Not long after opening, Tahoe Donner played host to the PGA tour in 1980, where pros like Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Craig Stadler teed off.
TAHOE DONNER GOLF BY THE NUMBERS
$2.2M
in course renovations in 2020
Over the following years, various updates were made to the course. This included construction of the maintenance building in 1996 to help staff better care for the course as well as the introduction of forward tees during renovations taking place from 2003 to 2007. Forward tees proved to be a popular addition, as they provided greater opportunities for players of various skill levels to enjoy the course.
7,002
EXCITING COURSE IMPROVEMENTS IN 2020 After more than four decades, Tahoe Donner Golf Course needed to improve its greens, tees and fairways. In addition to some poor hole layouts, Tahoe Donner was still utilizing annual bluegrass, or Poa annua, which is now viewed as a weed by turf managers due to its weak rooting capability and poor tolerance to traffic and winter snow.
14
In 2018, the Tahoe Donner General Plan Committee (GPC) received letters and requests for improvement from the men’s and women’s golf clubs. In response to the letters, the GPC formed a Golf Subcommittee to develop a scope of work, refine priorities, analyze costs and generate strategies. The board of directors approved the project and, with a budget of over $2 million, staff could address important repairs to our championship course.
$25
Cary Bickler of Cary Bickler, Inc. was chosen as the architect for the project. An expert in golf course restoration, Bickler has overseen improvements for multiple courses up and down the California coast, including La Jolla Country Club and La Cumbre Country Club in Santa Barbara.

MORE PLAYABILITY + MORE FUN Each element of the course’s expansion and upgrade was designed with increased playability in mind. With a layout that promotes improved shot selection and turf that fares better in the off-seasons, Tahoe Donner’s golf experience is more elevated than ever before. ALL NEW GREENS One of the biggest and most intensive components of the project was the greens replacement. Tahoe Donner’s old Poa annua grasses reduced the overall quality of the course. As part of the renovation project, over 3.5 new acres of resilient creeping bentgrass were laid last fall, proven to withstand Truckee winters. This sturdy sod provides a much better putting surface and will stand strong for decades to come. FORWARD TEE EXPANSION The renovation between 2003-2007 saw the introduction of forward tees to the course. Unfortunately, the small tees and location of many near cart paths created safety hazards and poor shot selection. Thanks to improved placement and increased square footage of tee boxes, golfers will find these tees to be better aligned with the fairways and much more enjoyable to play. In total, 14 tee boxes were either expanded or relocated, including Hole 12, which is a shared tee. COURSE REROUTES FOR BETTER PLAYABILITY + PACE OF PLAY In addition to expanding tee areas, some tees have also been relocated. For example, tees on Holes 2 and 11 were once drastically misaligned and could be awkward to play. Today, players will find the angles down the fairways are in proper alignment with the greens, creating much better shot opportunities. IMPROVED LAYOUT Anyone who regularly played Tahoe Donner Golf Course knows the feeling of hitting a shot down the fairway on Hole 10 only to find your ball lying in a puddle. Thanks to improved drainage, players will now enjoy improved shot selection and playing surfaces throughout the course. Additionally, relocated cart paths in steep areas like Hole 11 have been rebanked and resodded to be gentler and more gradual.
“Hole 11 is a new showcase hole, and it will play wider as a result of a relocated cart path. A steep bank that gave people trouble has also been regraded. I’m looking forward to players getting to experience this hole. Our natural surroundings work in tandem with the course itself, offering challenging yet fun opportunities for strategic playing and thoughtful club selection.” TREE REMOVAL FOR BETTER PLAYABILITY + DEFENSIBLE SPACE One of the most important changes to the course not only for playability and turf health but for safety was strategic tree removal. During the course closure in 2020, Tahoe Donner forestry crews performed dead and hazardous tree removal and thinning in the forested common areas on and around the course. This had been a planned project; however, it was challenged with access and timing constraints due to heavy winter seasons and the timing of golf course operations. This work allows more sunlight to encourage turf health and create wider fairways for better shot selection. It also creates a fire break and defense against possible wildfire.
GET ON THE GREENS
As Tahoe Donner celebrates 50 years of outdoor recreation, we are excited for all to enjoy our newly improved golf course. With the hard work of Tahoe Donner club members, board of directors, staff and construction crews, our community can enjoy this alpine golf treasure like never before. To learn more about weekly clinics, private lessons, tee times and more, visit page 30. For more information on the recent course improvements and features, visit tahoedonner.com/golf.
Tahoe Donner Golf Pro and Manager James Murtagh shared that Hole 11 might be his favorite following the course improvements project.

TRAIL SYSTEM + OPEN SPACE USING AND ENJOYING TAHOE DONNER’S MOST CHERISHED ASSET
By ANNIE ROSENFELD, Director of Risk Management + Real Property
With over 5,000 acres of open space and more than 60 miles of doubletrack and singletrack trails, Tahoe Donner offers its members and guests the opportunity to get out in nature simply by walking out their front door. As an added benefit, the association’s neighbors and working land management partners include the United States Forest Service, National Forest and Truckee Donner Land Trust; these organizations make up hundreds of miles of trails and tens of thousands of acres of the Sierra Nevada that abut the TD trail system. Tahoe Donner also is neighbor to legacy private properties whose ownership spans over 200 years. Members have a commonality to all these landowners as they are an owner of Tahoe Donner Association. We all share a responsibility to these lands and special ecosystems by protecting and enhancing the land for long-term and sustainable recreation. Each time you step outside for exploration, fitness, nature observation, family time and friendly activities, be sure to pause, listen, smile and say hi!
WAYS YOU CAN BE A STEWARD OF THE LAND
The trail system is a better place when we work together to protect it, so commit to fostering the value of our shared responsibility. While we’re hiking, biking or enjoying the trails, help others learn about the delicate nature of our open spaces. Take opportunities to educate and inform with kindness so that others carry on the shared responsibility. Cherish the land and ecosystems by leaving it better than how you found it. Every footprint, snack wrapper, dog bag (please bag up your dog waste) and forgotten water bottle adds up exponentially over time. Leaving no trace when you hike creates a sustainable way to enjoy the outdoors so everyone can safely experience our wonderful natural resources. Additionally, please respect and honor private properties both within the neighborhood and around larger parcels throughout the association.
Take your caring to the next level when you participate in Give Back Opportunities in Tahoe Donner and with local stewardship groups. For more information, visit tahoedonner.com/trails.
GIVE BACK OPPORTUNITIES
VOLUNTEER TRAIL WORKDAYS Participate in trail workdays and encourage others to do the same. Many of these are family-friendly events and a prime way for kids to learn the value of “dirt sweat!” To view volunteer opportunities throughout the summer and fall, visit tahoedonner.com/trails. AMBASSADOR PROGRAM (NEW THIS SUMMER!) Join your fellow members in becoming trail ambassadors. These volunteer positions create days and times to assist the Tahoe Donner trail crews with trail education, route facts, trail use, field surveys of trail users and more. To volunteer as an ambassador, send an email to trails@tahoedonner.com. DONATION While the trails are priceless, Tahoe Donner encourages trail use donations for non-members: ADULTS: $5 per day use CHILDREN: $2 per day use NOTE: A $15 equestrian day pass for non-members is required. To ensure the beauty of the trails, consider making an additional donation for trail upkeep. Donations are graciously accepted at Alder Creek Adventure Center, Bikeworks and Member Services. The trails program is a voluntary monetary contribution for public trail users. Its purpose is to recognize the financial commitment and trail maintenance efforts the association has made and continues to make on the 60+ miles of multi-use singletrack and doubletrack summer trails. Get involved and participate at tahoedonner.com/trails.

FEATURE
PROJECT HIGHLIGHT NATURE LOOP TRAIL PROJECT COMPLETION One of the oldest original Tahoe Donner trails is the Nature Loop Trail. First established by Dart Industries when creating the subdivision, this community connection has been a staple for outdoor family fun for nearly 50 years. The unprecedented winter Tahoe Donner saw in 2016-2017 resulted in permanent damage to the popular Nature Loop Trail, located in the heart of Tahoe Donner. The boardwalk on the south side of the trail broke under the weight of the snow, and other parts of the trail were eroding into the creek because of failed retaining walls. After years of closure and anticipated reopening, the Nature Loop Trail is once again ready to enjoy!
IMPROVEMENTS The project in total focused on the following assets: • One bridge replacement • One boardwalk replacement • 1,500 linear feet of new and rehabilitated work on the existing turnpike • One rock wall retention and tread stabilization improvement • 225 feet of decommissioned and rerouted trail • Four rolling dips (one with a rock dissipater) • One armored swale and a new and improved turnpike
PLANNING Extensive surveying, designing, engineering and permitting have been completed over the last few years, and construction was set into motion at a record rate. Those same years included designs and authorizations, including resource surveys, land surveys, engineering and permitting for all reworkings of the trail. Considering the complexity of the project, staff have moved remarkably quickly through the planning and design for the replacement and repair project. Typical projects of a similar undertaking are usually more than four years in the making.
These improvements were approved to not only restore the trail to what it once was but to improve it in many areas to enhance user experiences, further protect the wetland habitat and prevent accelerated erosion from popular use.
The planning and designing of this project took place between 2018 and 2019 to scope the project and plan for consultant assistance. Various options were considered in the planning process, including rerouting the trail and postponing the project to another year. The financial feasibility and ultimate member satisfaction, however, allowed the trail to be restored as it was with the funding approved by the Tahoe Donner Board of Directors.
COMPLETION In late October 2020, construction was completed, and families were able to enjoy the area before the snow began to fall. This small-but-mighty loop offers an escape for an early morning hike, a quick lunch break lap, an evening stroll or a weekend adventure. We are excited this spring and summer to venture once again through this gateway and into a natural world just steps from home.
CONSTRUCTION Construction for the Nature Loop Trail Repair and Replacement Project began in mid-July last year. As with any sensitive wetland area, numerous features were created to get trail-users out of the mud and provide safer travel without damaging the unique environment it surrounds.

TAHOE DONNER
TRAILS (530) 582-9672 | TAHOEDONNER.COM/TRAILS The Tahoe Donner Trail System is the ultimate playground for hikers, trail runners, mountain bikers and equestrians with more than 60 miles of trails and fire access service roads spanning over 5,000 acres. With thousands of users, horses and dogs included, it is important that we all work together and observe basic trail rules and etiquette to keep the backcountry safe and enjoyable for everyone.
TRAIL CONNECTIVITY The Tahoe Donner Trail System is one of the greatest assets to the association and its members. Accessing the trails is easy when using a Tahoe Donner street connection or one of the many larger facility trailheads like Alder Creek Adventure Center. Whether your passion lies in extended hikes for exploring, a quick run after work, a lunch mountain bike ride or a connection to larger trail systems like the Pacific Crest Trail, Tahoe Donner trails have much to offer. Try a new trail and adventure to the outer loops while enjoying an indelible experience in the Sierra. When out on the trails, remember to share the experience with others you may encounter. Expect to see children, horses, bikes, dogs, bears and more. Take a few moments to reflect on your responsibilities on the trail. When you come upon another person enjoying the wilderness, greet them. If you are on a bike, slow down. A smile goes far beyond the trail. Pick up a Tahoe Donner Trail Map, keep it close and go explore!
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES TRAIL MAP +
WILDFLOWER GUIDE A detailed Summer Trail Map and Tahoe Donner Wildflower Guide are available at major trailheads, Member Services, Alder Creek Adventure Center and tahoedonner.com/trails.
Creating a vibe of patience, appreciation, compassion, stewardship and community is vital to ensuring enjoyment by all who utilize any trail system. The next time you’re out on the trails, observe the following:
• SHARE the trail. Tahoe Donner trails are designed and maintained for multiple users. Expect to see all user types and abilities. • ENGAGE with your surroundings. Stay present and be prepared for wildlife encounters, changing weather and unexpected trail conditions. • OBSERVE yielding etiquette, safe speeds and "Leave No Trace" practices. • GREET fellow trail users, especially when approaching from behind, and communicate kindly with each other. • MANAGE the animal you’re with. Whether it’s a dog or horse, you have a responsibility to the animal and other trail users to maintain control at all times. • REPORT trail issues to the trail manager by calling (530) 582-9672 or emailing trails@tahoedonner.com.
YIELDING ETIQUETTE
Expect to encounter fellow recreationists each time you head out on a trail. Although common sense goes a long way when using busy trails, we ask that all trail users observe the following yielding etiquette: Horseback riders always have the right of way but should be prepared for inexperienced trail users who are unfamiliar with how to act around horses. Horseback riders should avoid high-traffic trails whenever possible.
Bikers must always yield to hikers and horseback riders. Stop and get off the bike, then step downhill and off trail to let them pass. Always announce your presence when approaching people and horses.
When approaching someone on horseback, announce yourself and ask the rider for the best way to pass.
Uphill traffic always has the right of way. Those with dogs must yield to others. Call your dog to your side when passing others, and never let your pet jump on or greet others without their permission.
PROTECT YOURSELF + OUR TRAILS Always be respectful of animals, the environment and others when using the trail. Make busy trails easier to navigate by exhibiting patience and courtesy to others. Check the weather forecast so you know what to expect when you hit the trail, and always bring water, snacks, sun protection and extra layers. Don’t play on muddy trails. Letting them dry out allows them to remain narrow and helps reduce erosion. Stay on designated trails. Don’t cut switchbacks, take shortcuts or create new trails; it is damaging to the fragile ecosystem. Pick up after your pet. Litter bags are available at most trailheads. Please bring them, use them and dispose of them in a trash can. Leaving dog waste bags on trails is littering. Respect our neighbors and stay on Tahoe Donner property at all times. Property boundaries are posted; please observe them. Take and share photos of your hike or adventure to inspire others to enjoy the wilderness of the Tahoe Donner Trail System. Tag us with #exploretahoedonner.
