MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT It is an honor to be the new president of the Tahoe Donner Board of Directors. I am looking forward to an exciting year. Welcome to Don Koenes, the new director on the board. Don has a wealth of experience in business and HOA matters – the rest of the board looks forward to working with him. And a fond farewell to Jeff Bonzon, now-former director who has devoted a tremendous amount of time and talent to Tahoe Donner. I am sure Jeff will continue to contribute to the community. Thank you to all of the candidates. Tahoe Donner is lucky to have such qualified people step up and run for election. The 33% voter turnout was higher than in years past. Thank you to the Elections Committee and Marketing Department for improving the outreach to the members. There is an old political saying: “The world is run by those who show up.” The same applies at Tahoe Donner. One of the main goals of my board tenure is to make it easier for all members – on and off the hill – to ”show up” and participate. During this last year, the board made significant progress in creating new ways for TD members to give input to the board and management. While we welcome your physical attendance at board meetings, you no longer have to leave your home to participate. The meetings are broadcast live online so you can monitor them while they’re happening. During meetings you can send in your written comments via Skype. If the staff receives your message while the item is still under consideration, your comment will be conveyed to the board and meeting attendees. New last month, members can call in and verbally provide comments during board meetings. Remember, to keep
the meeting moving, comments are limited to three minutes. If you miss a meeting altogether, you can watch the video of the meeting posted on tahoedonner.com. Watching the videos will be less time-consuming because time-stamps will be provided so you can just watch the topics you are interested in, rather than watching the whole meeting. Speaking for the board, I hope you take advantage of these opportunities. Serving on a committee is also a way of “showing up.” We now have seven committees – the Member Engagement Committee was added last year to the existing Finance, Architectural Standards, General Plan, Elections, Covenants and Giving Fund committees. We are working on improving our telecommunications system to make it easier for off-hill committee members to participate in committee meetings. All committee vacancies will be announced via an e-blast, and they will be advertised on our website – so please consider applying. Also this year, the General Plan Committee has established a task force for each amenity location. If you want to help draft the master plan for an amenity, email the General Plan Committee and join the task force. If you can’t commit that time but have an idea about how to improve an amenity, just submit your comment on the iPad located at every amenity or send an email to the general manager and the board. During the coming year, the board plans to recommend a revised set of TD bylaws and Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions (CC&Rs) to the membership. The CC&Rs are detailed in the hefty 50+ page document you received when you first purchased a lot or home in Tahoe Donner. About a dozen TD members and staff have been hard at (Continued on p. 4)

work drafting amendments to bring TD’s decades-old governing documents up-todate and make them more user-friendly and durable. The revised documents will first be available for member comments. After the board approves a recommended draft, the membership will vote on the revised documents. We need over half of the members to vote on the governing documents, so expect to hear a lot of us urging you to vote. While working on other items, it is safe to say that fire safety and emergency preparedness are two of the board’s top priorities. We have two board members who are uniquely qualified to help. Director Jeff Schwerdtfeger is a retired fire captain and former manager of a FEMA task force. Director Don Koenes is working with Sonoma County to update its Emergency Public Information Plan in response to lessons learned from the tragic fire last year. Our goal is for Tahoe Donner to have the most robust emergency operations plan in
the state. Staff are diligently working along with an advisory committee (which is open to all members) on updating TD’s emergency plan. You can find links to emergency preparedness resources at tahoedonner. com/preparedness. Tahoe Donner has an award-winning forestry staff led by Bill Houdyschell. In June, the board increased the budget for the Forestry Department to accelerate the removal of dead and downed wood in TD’s common areas. Of course, the bulk of the defensible space work needs to be done by individual members on their own property. Thank you for doing your part to help keep TD fire safe! Finally, I hope you are having a fun summer – hiking, biking, swimming or just reading a good book in the peace and quiet of Tahoe Donner.

DON'T WORRY, IT'S JUST LIKE RIDING A BIKE BIKEWORKS OFFERS CONVENIENT RENTALS, GUIDED RIDES, PRIVATE LESSONS AND MORE IN THE HEART OF TAHOE DONNER By JOE LEWANDOWSKI
With more than 60 miles of trails accessible from literally right outside the door, Bikeworks is the most perfectly placed bike shop in Tahoe. But many people – including Tahoe Donner residents – don’t realize the full extent of the shop’s offerings. Read on for a basic Bikeworks primer, and learn more at tahoedonner.com/bikeworks.
BIKE RENTALS “Multiple people have told me that renting a bike from us was one of the worst mistakes they ever made,” Dave Walker, manager of Bikeworks, says with a laugh. “Because as soon as they get on a new bike they know they’ll never want to go back to their old one. The difference is night and day, and suddenly they want a brand new bike.” The rental fleet at Bikeworks is comprised of about 90 bikes in many sizes and models. Full-suspension mountain bikes from Giant and Liv are the most popular, but hardtails, road bikes, cruisers, kids bikes, BMX and fat bikes are available, as are trailers and trail-a-bikes. All rentals are available by the hour, half day or full day, and you can check inventory by calling (530) 582-9694. Members receive a 10 percent discount, and helmets are included with all rentals. Because a third of the fleet is new each year, renters can sample models with the latest tech advancements, including 1x11 drive trains with single front chain rings and dropper posts that can move the seat up and down mid-ride. “Every upgrade makes a big difference,” Walker says. “Having a better bike usually makes people want to ride more, and it always makes them a better rider. And it’s always fun to try new models if you’re looking to buy a bike.”
GUIDED RIDES Rent a bike or bring your own for a guided group mountain bike ride, available daily from Memorial Day until Labor Day then weather-permitting into the fall. Rides cost $25 per person and typically last 1.5-2 hours. Scenic routes on the trail system feature a variety of terrain selected based on the fitness and skill level of the group. “Our guided rides tend to be families and groups of people that just don’t want to have to worry about looking at a map,” Walker says. “They don’t want to worry about getting lost, they don’t want to worry if they get a flat tire. When our guides take riders out, our focus is on having a nice, fun, stress-free ride. “We get a lot of people that haven’t ridden a bike in 10 or 15 years. They love it when we tell them, ‘Don’t worry, it’s just like riding a bike.’ But it really does come right back. “We start people slow. We go over shifting and braking, make sure everybody knows how the bike works before we even get rolling with them. Then the first time we take them down one of the easy trails that’s roller-coastery – a little flowy, with some ups and downs and humps and berms – the smiles are pretty awesome.”
PRIVATE LESSONS “I grew up riding a bike, but the first time I mountain biked was last summer,” says 14-year-old Gideon Shaked. “It’s honestly one of the most fun things I’ve ever done. The sensation of whipping down a trail and flying through the air is amazing.” Shaked and his family live in Miami Beach but spend much of the summer in Tahoe Donner. Through June and July he developed his skills by taking private lessons taught by International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) certified instructors at Bikeworks. By developing specific skills like cornering, braking and maneuvering over obstacles, Shaked was able to see the difference in mere days. “My riding lessons have really taught me to savor every moment and get the most out of every turn and jump,” Shaked says. “And it’s always a great feeling to truly earn your decent.” Private one-on-one lessons last two hours and cost $99 per person. UPCOMING CLINICS + EVENTS For more information or to register, call (530) 582-9694 or visit tahoedonner.com/bikeworks.
WOMEN’S BASIC BIKE MAINTENANCE “Our female instructors teach these clinics, and they’re always a hit,” Walker says. “After this clinic you’ll know how to fix a flat, how to repair a busted chain, and how to wash and lube your bike after riding.”
KIDS CAMPS Throughout the summer Bikeworks offers mountain biking camps for kids ages 10-14. Over the course of two or five days, kids can improve their biking skills, explore the trail system and make new friends. “I’m a full believer in mountain biking camps as a way for kids to learn to ride and gain confidence,” says TD member and full-time resident Courtney Murrell. Her 15-year-old son Gavin and 11-year-old daughter Megan have both taken multiple weeklong mountain biking camps, and their progress is undeniable. “Megan’s only been riding a couple of years, and her skills are improving every time she rides. She’s already tackling Cinnamon Twist and some of the other trails with really curvy, turny ups and downs,” Murrell says. “And my son Gavin’s skills are better than mine at this point. I’m always excited to go out with him because he makes me a better rider and shows me trails I don’t even know about.”
REPAIRS + RETAIL Bikeworks also features a small retail store with clothing, gear and TD souvenirs, as well as a full-service repair shop offering everything from quick flat fixes to custom rebuilds. A basic tune-up – which includes checking and tightening all fasteners, adjusting brakes and shifting, minor wheel true, adjusting hubs and headset, and chain lubrication – is just $69, which other services priced competitively. “There’s a mechanic on duty every day,” Walker says. “We almost always turn bikes around overnight, no matter the issue. There’s nowhere in town that does that except for us.”
FALL FUN There’s plenty going on at Bikeworks for the rest of the summer (see sidebar), but Walker says the best time to ride in Tahoe Donner is yet to come. “As the summer goes on, it gets pretty dusty and hot on the trails,” he says. “In the fall it gets cooler and it starts to rain a bit, and the trail conditions improve dramatically. It firms up, it’s less dusty and it’s faster to ride. Plus, some of the scenery is absolutely amazing. Riding through the aspen grove and seeing it lit up all gold is magical. It’s like a whole new world in the fall.” For summer or fall bike rentals, group rides, lessons and more, call Bikeworks at (530) 582-9694 or visit tahoedonner.com/bikeworks.
WHEN: Thursday, Aug. 16 | 4-6PM COST: Member Free, Non-Member $10
WOMEN’S INTRODUCTION TO MOUNTAIN BIKING “Saturday is skill-based,” Walker says. “It’s about learning shifting, braking, cornering, wheel lifts and other movements on the bike. Then Sunday is all trail riding, applying the stuff we talked about Saturday.” PART 1: Saturday, Aug. 25 PART 2: Sunday, Aug. 26 TIME: 9AM-12PM Cost: $149 per session
FUN-DAMENTAL MOUNTAIN BIKING SERIES FOR KIDS “This series is more skills-focused than our camps, and is closer to what we do in private lessons,” Walker says. “It’s a great way to improve skills and boost confidence in a short amount of time.” AGES 8-10: Saturday, Aug. 25 AGES 11-14: Sunday, Aug. 26 TIME: 9AM-12PM COST: $149 per session
BIKEWORKS USED BIKE SALE “It depends on the bike, but generally we sell used bikes for about 40 percent off from what they would cost new,” Walker says. “We sell about a third of our fleet each year, and the vast majority of the bikes are sold in the first hour.” WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 1 | 9AM

HIKING CLUB
FRIENDS OF TD TRAILS
Eighteen members (and a guest) of the Tahoe Donner Hiking Club recently enjoyed an away trip to Castle Crags State Park near Dunsmuir, California. The trip featured options of car camping or motels, with three days of planned hikes and daily happy hour at camp. In keeping with the club philosophy of choosing suitable-length hikes and hiking at your own pace, participants opted for either the suggested activity or an alternative.
The Trails Club was founded on the principle that hands-on stewardship of our trails and open spaces should be a vital part of our community. We've been busy this season putting that principle into practice.
The first suggested hike was through the park and featured close-up views of Castle Crags.
The second, and longest, hike was from Gumboot Lake toward Castle Crags and featured views, wildflowers, PCT through-hikers and more views. From a couple of locations we could see Mt. Shasta, the entire Castle Crags formation, and Mt. Lassen all at once.
This summer we resumed our work building a new multi-use trail between the Teton Way and Glacier Way trailheads; helped lead a guided hike for Tahoe Donner members into Carpenter Valley with the Truckee Donner Land Trust; and continued teaching our community about the noxious weeds invading our neighborhood. Extending an annual tradition, we will also team up with the Truckee River Watershed Council on September 1 to lead a River Walk, during which you can learn about the Truckee River watershed, the work the Watershed Council is doing elsewhere to restore and protect it, and the ways we can further that work here in Tahoe Donner, starting right in our own yards. Finally, in cooperation with our Trails Department, we will be hosting volunteer trail work days on the third Saturday of the month through September. For more information and to sign up for our events, please visit tdtrails.org.
SENIOR ALPINE SKI CLUB The Senior Alpine Ski Club is gearing up for our summer activities with pickleball, golf and our summer New Member BBQ. August events include the annual New Member BBQ, which is always a hit with club members and historically has had a very large turnout. New members are always welcome. In September will be a pickleball tournament at the Tennis Center, with beer and pizza afterward. If you wish to join one of these events, contract our membership chairperson from the website link below. This coming winter we’re planning a ski trip to Steamboat Springs, CO, as well as trips to nearby Mammoth and Heavenly. Please visit tdski.com for club information and full details and dates for upcoming events.
A second group opted for a wildflower hike at a recommended “hot spot” – and found over 90 different species within less than a mile. The third suggested hike was to a viewpoint of Castle Dome, a distinctive formation in Castle Crags. The weather cooperated admirably, with afternoon heat being the only issue – easily addressed with a visit to the nearby Sacramento River headwaters after the first hike and ice cream after the longest hike. We also started hiking earlier in the morning than originally planned, since the summer solstice timing meant early sunrises. The club hikes every week from snowmelt to snowfall, with three different length hikes each week. Come join us!
WOMEN'S 9-HOLERS GOLF CLUB Meet some of the TD 9-Holers women golfers. This year is the first year in a long time that we have a full roster of golfers. Word has gotten out about how much fun we have together. If you are thinking about wanting to join next year, polish off your clubs and take some lessons with one of TD’s great golf pros. Please direct any questions to our club president, Shellie Poplin, at shelliepoplin@gmail.com.

OWN A PIECE OF TAHOE DONNER HISTORY BIDDING CLOSES AUGUST 22
June’s trail run was up the east end of the Rubicon Trail near Tahoma to do maintenance at the scenic Miller Lake Campground and then explore Richardson Lake and the Sourdough Hill Trail. At Miller Lake the team repaired the damaged campground sign and cleaned up the area before enjoying lunch at Richardson Lake. John Briggs, an experienced Rubicon Jeeper and club member, led the group of 10 vehicles up to 7,923 feet to the top of Sourdough Hill for everyone to take in the breathtaking views. There is a network of Jeep trails in the area – check out theotherrubicon.com/articles/side-trails to learn more.
Club members and their guests enjoyed the TD Summer Concert on the Green show featuring Best Shot and Mustache Harbor – it was a blast! August activities include picking up physically challenged kids, their counselors and gear from Camp Nejedly at Hawley Lake and bringing them back down to Graeagle on August 11. The camp is 11 miles out on a rough dirt road so you need a capable 4x4 with low range. Please join us if you can help, as it is a very rewarding experience. We look forward to having you join us – all you need is a capable 4x4 vehicle (Wrangler, FJ Cruiser, 4x4 Tacoma or similar high-clearance vehicle), a family radio and curiosity to explore the great outdoors from our Tahoe Donner base camp.

THE REPORT
TAHOE DONNER GIVING FUND 2018 SCHOLARSHIPS This June, the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund awarded eight scholarships totaling $12,500 to graduates from Truckee High School, North Tahoe High School and Sierra High School, as well as $8,000 in continuing education scholarships to graduates from 2015 and 2016. Giving Fund members Barbara Ramsey and Suzanne Sullivan participated with other affiliates of the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation (TTCF) in reviewing 118 applications from graduating seniors in the Truckee Tahoe Unified School District and several charter and private schools. Each affiliate came to the table with a list of graduates who met the requirements of the scholarship they applied for, which range from smaller one-time awards to full four-year endowments. To qualify for an award from the Giving Fund, the graduate should: • Be accepted at a post-secondary twoyear or four-year college or university or an accredited institution offering career technical education • Demonstrate the capacity for success by having at least a 3.0 GPA based on a 4-point scale • Demonstrate financial need • Preference is given to students who are the first in their family to seek postsecondary education At the end of the process, the Giving Fund recommended and the board of directors approved the following scholarships: Aubriel Ford Sierra High School, attending Truckee Meadows Community College’s applied tech program, majoring in engineering/ computer science Alondra Leon North Tahoe High School, first in family to go to college, attending Sacramento State University, majoring in criminology/ forensic science
Jose Ponce Prieto Truckee High School, attending Sierra College, majoring in architectural drafting
Conor Pugh Truckee High School, attending UNR, majoring in mechanical engineering with special interest in robotics Jocelyn Ruiz Truckee High School, attending UNR, where her goal is to become a registered nurse practitioner Mariana Sanchez Truckee High School, first in family to go to college, attending CSU Chico, majoring in nursing
Alondra Delgadillo (2016) Alondra graduated from Sierra High in 2016 and received an AA from Sierra College this June. She is matriculating to UNR, where she will major in psychology with an emphasis on mental health. Alondra plans to return to Truckee upon graduation to give back to her community. Adam Alessi (2016) Adam graduated from Forest Charter School in 2016 and is continuing his education at Butte College. He has completed his general education and EMT/paramedic training. This summer he begins the fire academy, and when finished he will be a firefighter paramedic.
Lucy Swanson Truckee High School, attending UC Berkeley, majoring in psychology
These scholarships are what enable many of these students to attend college and move forward with their career goals. Knowing that they have their community’s support bolsters their confidence and encourages them to continue. You, as Tahoe Donner full- and part-time residents, should feel very proud you are playing a vital role in the future of so many deserving local youth.
Sherwood Wilder Truckee High School, attending Sierra College then transferring to Butte Community College’s fire science program next year
Please consider a contribution to the Giving Fund to help us continue this program, and to support area non-profits. We will be joining TTCF’s open competitive grant committee for non-profits this fall, so a contribution today will be put to work before the end of the year! It is easy to contribute from our website: tahoedonner.com/giving-fund
Based on Giving Fund recommendations, the board also approved the following continuing education scholarships: Michaela Ness (2015) Michaela, the Giving Fund’s first scholarship awardee, will be graduating in summer 2019 from UNR with an education degree. She intends to hold both Nevada and California single-subject teaching credentials in English, and hopes to return to Truckee to teach.
The Tahoe Donner Giving Fund is chartered by the TD board of directors. All contributions are voluntary tax-deductible gifts from TD members and friends. THE REPORT
BOARD MEMBER PROFILE: DON KOENES By JAMIE BATE
isn’t a simple proposition. “One person’s suggestion is another person’s criticism,” Koenes says. “Regardless, everyone has the same motivation: making Tahoe Donner better, whatever their position. Perspectives range from personal enjoyment to financial concerns, from member rights to providing good guest experiences, too.” With 25,000 members – not to mention guests – living and recreating on Tahoe Donner’s 7,300 acres, Koenes says it’s impossible to point to a single, highest priority to tackle as a board member. Wildfire safety is paramount, he says, as is the safety at and maintenance of the association’s facilities. “Our amenities must be well maintained to serve our members and guests of members well, including capacity for enjoyment,” Koenes says. “And we must do all of this in a fiscally responsible manner, with broad member input. I was not a singleissue candidate, nor will I be a single-issue board member.”
Sometimes seeing a place from a distance gives you the best perspective. For Don Koenes, recently elected to the five-member Tahoe Donner Board of Directors, that view was from atop Donner Summit. For years, Koenes and his family headed up Interstate 80 from Roseville to spend time in a friend’s cabin at Serene Lakes, even going as far as purchasing a homesite on the Summit. But a family holiday stay in Tahoe Donner years earlier never left their thoughts. “When it came time to build or buy, we took a trip over the Summit to check out Tahoe Donner again,” Koenes reflects. “We never looked back.” A dozen years later, Koenes is now a board member with perspective gained from spending significant time in two adjacent mountain locations. Tahoe Donner “feels like a neighborhood,” he says, “not just a place to have a cabin.”
As he starts his tenure on the board, Koenes is keen on ensuring that Tahoe Donner continues its diverse offerings. “Reality is, no one uses all the amenities, and no amenity is used by everyone,” he says, adding that there is one exception – the community’s vast open space. “It is everywhere. It welcomes us as we drive into Tahoe Donner and envelopes us as we visit any amenity, especially our trail system, our largest amenity.” At the end of the day, Koenes says he and his wife, Denise, want to continue enjoying Tahoe Donner with their children and grandchildren. “Tahoe Donner has something for everyone, no matter what the season of the year or the season of your life,” he says. “For me, it is a place for my family to gather, to enjoy the outdoors, to be happy together. And it is a place to make new friends.”
And then there were the amenities: plenty to do, with something for everyone in the family, he observes. “That first impression has never disappointed us, and every year we discover more to do.” As a “part-timer” who spends about four months of the year at his home in Tahoe Donner, Koenes isn’t a newbie to the association’s governance. He volunteered for multiple General Plan Committee (GPC) Task Forces, then joined the GPC itself, becoming the liason to the Finance Committee, as well as sitting through countless board meetings – all valuable preparation for serving on the board. Congestion at Tahoe Donner amenities during peak seasons spurred his civic involvement, but helping maintain the community’s quality of life, safety, value and family focus is where Koenes wants to make a difference. New Twists ON OLD FAVORITES THE LODGE PUB ELEVATES ITS COCK TAILS WITH HIGH-END, SMALL-BATCH INGREDIENTS By JOE LEWANDOWSKI The spacious deck at The Lodge Restaurant & Pub is the place to be as the sun sets on another gorgeous summer evening in Tahoe Donner. Sunglasses come off, revealing smiling eyes and tan lines at tables of vacationing friends and reuniting families. Celebrating coworkers nibble calamari and watch a curious coyote dart past a young golfer, who laughs when his dad’s putt misses by four feet. And a newly engaged couple gazes into each other’s eyes, oblivious to the happy sports fans cheering on the Giants in The Pub, where all 20 seats are occupied and someone’s bound to know your name. “It’s usually pretty fun and lively in here,” Christen Holland, general manager of The Lodge, says of The Pub. “There’s no other full bar open late in Tahoe Donner, the atmosphere is inviting indoors and out, and there’s a great mix of people, including many locals. Add to that our new summer cocktail menu and you can see why many people tell us The Pub is their favorite bar in Truckee.” The Pub switches its cocktail menu twice a year, and a new approach has made this summer’s the most celebrated by staff and patrons alike. “We’re using a lot more high-end liquors and liqueurs in our cocktails,” Holland says. “We’ve been working harder to find better, less-processed ingredients, including organic and sustainable alcohols when possible. The result is a more wellmade, high-quality product.”
DEREK MOORE
After the first sip, the differences are apparent. Ginger liqueur, less sweet than ginger beer, brightens the New Deal American Mule. Organic blood orange and almond liqueurs class-up the Ohana Mai Tai, no longer just a boozy sugar-juice. Genepy des Alpes, the flowery herbal liqueur, takes Mel’s Martini – and whoever drinks one – to the next level. “Our signature cocktails tend to be a fun new twist on older favorites,” Holland says. “Small changes can make a big difference, and we love presenting a new spin on our regular customers’ favorite drinks.” Those who prefer beer and wine have plenty of options at The Pub, too. There are more than 15 beers, including rotating local taps, nearly 20 wines by the glass and more than 120 wines by the bottle. “Our wine program is focused on local and organic farms,” Holland says. “It’s part of Tahoe Donner’s big push to be more earth-friendly and sustainable, in the restaurants and beyond.” Other examples include compostable straws, bamboo flatware and compostable or recyclable containers for takeout orders. Feeling thirsty? The Lodge Restaurant & Pub is open daily in August, from 11:30AM-3PM for lunch, and 5-9PM for dinner. Enjoy Happy Hour in The Pub Sunday-Thursday from 4-6PM, or Golfers Happy Hour in The Pub from 2-4PM daily during the golf season. For more info about food and drink options in Tahoe Donner, see page 16 or visit tahoedonner.com/dining.
OHANA MAI TAI “Maita’i” is the Tahitian word for “good.” Legend has it Victor J. Bergeron, proprietor of Trader Vic’s in Oakland, created the drink one afternoon in 1944 for friends visiting from Tahiti. After the first sip one exclaimed: “Maita’i roa ae!” which translates to “Out of this world – the best!” These are best served very cold, so add the following ingredients to a shaker of ice: • Smith & Cross Jamaican Rum (2 oz.) • Organic Arancino Blood Orange Liqueur (1 oz.) • Organic Orgeat Almond Liqueur (1/2 oz.) • Fresh Lime Juice (2 oz.) • Simple Syrup (1/4 oz.) • Splash Pineapple Juice Next, fill up a Collins glass with ice and strain the ingredients into the glass. Throw in a sprig of mint or skewered piece of fresh pineapple as a final touch. Enjoy!
NEW DEAL AMERICAN MULE The Moscow Mule, also known as a vodka buck, was invented in Los Angeles and is credited with popularizing vodka in the U.S. throughout the 1940s and 50s. “I just wanted to clean out the basement,” said the drink’s self-proclaimed inventor Wes Price, who helped the vodka/ginger beer concoction catch on by serving it to Hollywood actors. Fill a copper mug with ice and add the following ingredients: • Tito’s Vodka (1.5 oz.) • New Deal Ginger Liqueur (.5 oz.) Next, squeeze one half of a fresh lime in to the mug and fill to the top with ginger beer. Find a spot in the shade and sip away!

FORESTRY DEPARTMENT LEADS WAY IN FOREST HEALTH + DEFENSIBLE SPACE MANAGEMENT
Member Participation Is Essential to Protect Tahoe Donner from Wildfires
Tahoe Donner Association is comprised of approximately 7,620 acres, including 5,016 association-owned acres and 2,604 acres of member-owned private property, utility properties and public roads. The award-winning Forestry Department is dedicated to maintaining the health of the forest within those boundaries while minimizing the threat of forest fires, and the importance of their work can’t be overstated; in the last 40 years, more than 150 fires have burned in or within a two-mile radius of Tahoe Donner, yet defensible space management has ensured that no fires have spread to cause extensive damage to multiple homes or amenities throughout the association. “Forester Bill Houdyschell and his team are nationally regarded as leaders in community forest health and fire hazard mitigation, especially in the HOA world,” says Annie Rosenfeld, director of risk management and real property at Tahoe Donner. “The association has consistently committed resources to reducing the fire hazards in Tahoe Donner, and to forest health management for association-owned property. The investment members are making on their own properties contributes to the overall investment that the association is making.”
• • • •
554 acres of reforestation/fuel breaks 637 acres of fuel reduction zones 1,338 acres of common area with 60% for fuel reduction 2,487 acres of “natural stands”
“We’re trying to grow trees under a managed condition versus leaving a lot of brush fields out there,” says Bill Houdyschell, director of the Forestry Department. “Mature brush burns 32 times faster than managed timber stands. That’s why we’re trying to replace brush fields with fuel-reduction areas. When a fire approaches areas that have been treated…it basically has to burn around it, so the speed of the fire will be reduced.”
CREATING DEFENSIBLE SPACE
Houdyschell’s team has prioritized defensible space on the southern and southwestern edges of Tahoe Donner, as wind patterns suggest they are the most likely directions from which wildfire would spread. The team also provides educational outreach and physical vegetation management services to help members comply with state, local and association fire safety standards as part of the Homeowner Defensible Space Program. Along with treating 100 acres of common areas, they’ve inspected more than 750 individual properties in 2018, three-quarters of which have needed additional work for full compliance. Requirements include:
The Forestry Department removes brush, thins dense stands, maintains roads and plants trees to manage:
• Dead or beetle-infested trees removed • Areas of contiguous brush broken-up
• Pine needles removed from the roof of all structures • Pine needs on ground removed within 10 feet of all structures For more details and a schedule of future defensible space inspections, see tahoedonner.com/defensible.
FORESTRY DEPARTMENT BUDGET + GRANTS The Forestry Department’s operational funding over the last 10 years has exceeded $10 million, or slightly more than $1,500 per property owner assessment over that period. The board approved additional funds totaling $300,000 in both 2017 and 2018 to address environmental pressures including winter storm damage and drought effects from prior years.
Donner has been a certified Firewise Community since 2009, and was named Firewise Community of the Year in 2017 by the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County. An eight-year program is currently underway, but the Forestry Department is looking beyond that. “The defensible space program at Tahoe Donner is always evolving,” Houdyschell says. “For 2019, we’re looking at a more aggressive program around some of the main fuel breaks on the southern and southwestern borders. We can look at trees and have a very good idea of what will happen to them in 10-20 years, so we know what to do, and we’re becoming more aggressive. We’re thrilled at the progress we’ve made, and we’ll do everything we can to ensure that Tahoe Donner and its members stay safe from the ever-present threat of wildfire.”
The department has also secured grants totaling $815,686 since 1991. “We have been very successful with grant awards, not just being awarded grants but actually completing them,” Houdyschell says. “By proving that we can get projects done, we’re able to secure more grant money as time goes on.” Thanks to the budget, grants and member participation, Tahoe

SAFETY INFORMATION FOR FIRE PITS + FIRE SAFETY
ONE LESS SPARK, ONE LESS WILDFIRE Tahoe Donner takes fire safety seriously while at the same time allowing for member enjoyment of appropriately contained warming fires that comply with Tahoe Donner, Truckee Fire Protection District and Town of Truckee rules and regulations. Here’s what you need to know: • Warming fires are allowed in Truckee and Tahoe Donner. A warming fire is a small, low-flame to coal fire contained in an approved fire-burning device. • Consider appropriateness of a warming fire with the current weather forecast. Check for red flag warnings. • Any time a warming fire or barbecue is used, the best practice is to have a 5lb or greater fire extinguisher readily available, along with other fire-extinguishing tools including shovel and hose. • Never leave a fire or barbecue unattended. • Debris pile burning is currently prohibited in Truckee and Tahoe Donner. The Truckee Fire Protection District typically lifts the burn ban in the late fall, and permits are issued through early spring if conditions allow. Tahoe Donner Covenant Rules allow for debris burning late fall through March 31, so long as there is no burn ban in place and California Air Quality Control allows. • If you are renting your home, consider prohibiting outdoor warming fires in your rental agreement.
Below you can reference the Tahoe Donner Covenant Rules on fireworks prohibition, fire pits and other fire safety matters.
GENERAL COMMON AREA AND OTHER TDOWNED PROPERTY FIRE SAFETY FIRES: No fires or fireworks of any kind at any time are allowed except for controlled burns under the supervision of the Tahoe Donner Forester, and campfires in existing steel rings at Tahoe Donner Campground and Beach Club Marina when staff are present. The first violation of these rules will result in a hearing. FIREWORKS, FIREARMS, ARCHERY: Use, including the bearing of, firearms, air guns, archery equipment or fireworks of any kind is prohibited on any Common Area or other Association-owned property, with the exception that archery equipment may be used at the TDA Archery Range.
REPORTING If someone in your neighborhood is using fireworks or you believe there is a fire in your neighborhood uncontained, immediately call 911 for Truckee Fire Protection District response. Additionally, report the use to the Covenants
Committee through the Compliance Complaint Process available to you through: 1. Online complaint submission at onestop.tahoedonner.com 2. Email compliance@tahoedonner.com 3. Call (530) 414-8166 Visit tahoedonner.com/covenants if you would like to read more.
OUTDOOR KITCHENS For individuals interested in building their own outdoor kitchens, please be aware that permits will be required through the Town of Truckee and Tahoe Donner. The Town of Truckee requirements are specific to building, fire safety codes, etc. Tahoe Donner’s Architectural Standards Office reviews and considers approval for any exterior improvements. For more information on Tahoe Donner Architectural Standards permits, rules and procedures please visit tahoedonner.com/aso.
