PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Summer is upon us and it looks like it is a busy one. Based on the traffic backups on Northwoods, numerous members and guests are taking full advantage of our many amenities. Please enjoy your time at Tahoe Donner, however, while doing so, be extremely careful this summer with fire. Remember, the threat of wildfire is particularly high this fire season due to record drought conditions and above normal temperatures. Caution should be used with outdoor fire pits (must have a wire mesh screen; see page 27) and barbecues. Additionally, the single best step to reduce fire risk and damage that any homeowner can take, most firefighters agree, is to maintain your “defensible space” — the 100-foot zone around structures that is free of brush, grass and leaves to prevent or slow the spread of fire. Additionally, Tahoe Donner requires that the area within 100 feet of all property lines be addressed for fuel reduction. If you have any concerns or questions about your defensible space, contact the Tahoe Donner Forestry Department or visit our covenants page at tahoedonner.com/ covenants. As many of you know, the association recently concluded the annual meeting with the election of two board members. Ron Wulff returns after a brief hiatus and Steve Miller was re-elected to a second term. My thanks go out to Dick Gander for his dedication and good service to the association as the outgoing board member. I also wish to thank Tom

Johns for his services as president. I will keep my first presidential message brief. Financially we are making good headway at catching up following a dismal winter. The results of July and August will be very important in replenishing our operating fund. Staff is to be commended for their sacrifices and their continued effort to contain expenses while maintaining high levels of service. As for the Summer Concert on the Green, 2,500 members, guests, and visitors enjoyed the Super Diamond show. It was an outstanding success in many ways. For the remainder of the year, I will keep you informed as to the progress of the new Cross Country and Equestrian facility. The old structure was razed in less than eight hours. The site was graded and about 170 two-foot diameter, twelve-foot deep holes were drilled and filled with crushed stone. Last month, concrete was poured for the foundation. In July, I inspected our contractor’s fabrication facility in Carson City. Our lumber is on site and wall units are being assembled. Steel fabrication is out to subcontractors and when the concrete hardens these assemblies will be trucked to the site and erected. Just a bit of trivia: the bill of materials for the project consists of around 10,000 line items. Please enjoy the rest of the summer and, again, please be very careful with fire.

JIM STANG | BOARD PRESIDENT

If NFL players can do it, so can the Tahoe Donner Golf Course Maintenance Crew! Golf staff members don pink shirts every Tuesday to join in the fight against breast cancer. Tahoe Donner Golf Course Superintendent Kevin Kuehne, back row second from left, came up with the idea to support breast cancer awareness after recently losing a close friend to the disease. The crew will wear the shirts Tuesdays throughout the summer and daily during the month of October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

JENNY KENDRICK

FEATURE

SEARCHING FOR SINGLETRACK AT TAHOE DONNER BY JENNY KENDRICK

Eager to learn where the best singletrack for mountain biking was in Tahoe Donner, my husband and I met up with our mountain bike guide, Dave Walker, at Bikeworks, located at the Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Area. Dave, who is also the ski school director in the winter, runs Tahoe Donner Bikeworks and knows the local trails like the back of his hand. Another Bikeworks employee, Kim, helped us with our equipment selection and we were outfitted with the latest full-suspension mountain bikes and helmets before we headed out. At the Bikeworks shop there is a fleet of new Giant rental bikes including Trance X 27.5-inch full suspension mountain bikes or the Talon 27.5-inch front suspension mountain bike. If you opt to bring your own bike, Bikeworks operates as a full service bike shop with experienced mechanics to tune up your bike and get it in tip-top shape before your ride. Once we were fully equipped, we headed out to hit the trails. We descended down from the Downhill Ski Area to the network of trails that branch off from where the Cross Country Ski Center is located in the winter, which is also the location of the Equestrian Center when it’s in operation during the summer. The trees and wildflowers beamed against the deep blue morning sky and Dave pointed out the mule ears distinguished by their soft fuzzy leaves and bright yellow flowers as we joined up with the first of many singletrack trails that we

6

would ride. As we headed toward Euer Valley we started our climb up a trail called 3 Bridges, aptly named because you cross three bridges, though there is no water flowing under them during this time of year. As we approached Euer Valley, we hopped on Sundance and began a mellow and steady climb up to the Sundance Hut, enjoying sprawling panoramic views of the Sierra Crest with Castle Peak and the Euer Valley to our right. We continued on to Hasting’s Cutoff and made our way toward the new Mother Lode trail and were rewarded with the most stunning views of the Euer Valley and stopped to take in the postcard perfect view. After cutting along the ridgeline deeper into the wilderness, we arrived at the top of the fun part. We had climbed 1,050 feet with a peak elevation of approximately 7,089 feet – according to Strava, a mobile app that tracks your activity via GPS. That’s where we earned access to the flowy downhill combo of Mother Lode to Hidden Gem. This is where you can take a minute to lower your seat and then drop in. Mother Lode, a new singletrack

One of several hairpin turns on our first singletrack descent.

as of last summer, rewarded our efforts with its banked hairpin turns paired with smooth, fast wooded descents and the occasional jaw-dropping view of the expansive backcountry. Things got a little squirrely on the first few turns, but Dave pointed out some tips for improving my technique so I was able to tackle the switchbacks without hesitation. Minutes later, after descending 300 vertical feet, we regrouped with Dave at a dirt road and then descended another 300 vertical feet on the classic downhill singletrack, Hidden Gem. This trail was definitely more worn in, a little narrower and a little more technical, but also provided more of the same exhilaration. At the bottom of Hidden Gem, we arrived in Euer Valley at last and, feeling spent, we opted to head back out with a steady, gradual climb

Hit the trails at Tahoe Donner and take in the expansive views of the Sierra and Euer Valley.

We saved a little energy for the final climb back up to the Downhill Ski Area where we completed the ride and returned our gear. We patted ourselves on the back after enjoying a lovely, scenic, two-hour, ten-mile ride out on some of Tahoe Donner’s finest mountain biking trails. Mission accomplished! After we said goodbye to Dave and Kim at Bikeworks, we decide to refuel and treat ourselves to a quick (because convenience was key since we were famished) lunch from T-9 Grill at the golf course. We called in our order. I selected the Bay Shrimp and Butter Lettuce

via the dirt road versus heading up the singletrack. As we continued on, we were rewarded with a kaleidoscope of colors radiating from an assortment of wildflowers in full bloom. For those who want to explore Euer Valley – definitely worth the time and energy – you could make the loop around it before heading back up. The fun wasn’t over yet. There was still singletrack riding as we headed back out. We eventually returned to the 3 Bridges trail on the way down and enjoyed the mini dropoffs from the bridges as we headed back with speed.

BULLETIN BOARD

CHIPPING BY ROB WEIZER, HEAD GOLF PRO

#2

#1 Hopefully by now you’ve all had a chance to start working on your game and improving those scores! In the last article we talked about the importance of putting and some quick tips to help everyone. In this installment we’ll discuss chipping, the next phase of getting the ball “up and down” to help lower your handicap. No matter what the skill level of player, everyone can benefit from practicing his or her short game. Some players prefer using just one club out of their bag for chipping; I think it helps everyone to have several different clubs to create options in their ball flight around the green. Depending on the lie or the length of the shot, it’s important to choose the right club for the job. One of the keys to consistently chip better is

to first look at the overall shot before making a club selection. Ask yourself these questions: How long does the ball have to be in the air to reach the one-third point of the total shot? Does it have to go over a bunker, or is it just a bit of rough and then the green? These are key questions when determining which club to use for the shot. My suggestion would be to have at least two or three golf clubs that you’re comfortable with to provide for shot variance. For example, the three clubs that I use the most around the greens for chipping are a pitching wedge, a 54-degree wedge, and a 60-degree wedge. By using these clubs I have one shot that is low and rolls, one that lands and settles quickly, and a shot that is high and sits softly. While the club selection around the green varies depending on the circumstances, the technique remains the same: stance open to the target line, a little more weight on the forward foot, and the heel of the club slightly off the ground. Having your stance slightly open to the target line allows you to feel the club travel towards the target (photo #1). Always remember that in golf, alignment is twofold: one for the target line, and a parallel line for your body position. Also, weight distribution plays a critical role in hitting your chip cor-

#3 rectly. As you take your stance, distribute your weight slightly towards your front foot. This allows the club to make impact with a slightly downward angle, which helps ensure a more solid strike on the golf ball. Another key ingredient to successful chipping is the overall length of the stroke. I’m a very big believer in teaching my students that the stroke has to “match.” For example, if the golf club in the backswing goes just underneath your knee (photo #2), then the club should go forward to the same position in the downward or forward part of the swing (photo #3). Not only does this help with solid contact, but it also ensures that the golf club doesn’t slow down or decelerate into the golf ball. Remember that we’re working on a golf swing, not a golf hit. I hope that these tips help you with your chipping and your overall scoring! If you’d like some more individualized instruction, come on out for our short game clinic, every Monday at noon. The session covers short game fundamentals, including chipping, pitching, and putting (instructor’s choice). Or, check out one of our other daily clinics – covering all the basics and offered for any level. Each one-hour clinic is just $20 per student. Sign up in the pro shop or call us at 530-587-9443. See you out here!

ON THE COVER Chris and Christy Beck and their two daughters Kylee (12) and Maci (10) live in Tahoe Donner full time. They frequent the Beach Club Marina often with their two paddleboards and their kayak. A June birthday party at the marina has become a family tradition, along with summer evening BBQs with friends. The Beck family was attracted to Tahoe Donner for the many amenities. “We go to the pools, play tennis, hang out at the lake, go mountain biking and hiking, and I go to the gym every morning before work… everything I need is right here! I’ll never leave!” Christy says.

August brings us a fun event for our members of the men’s and ladies clubs. Aug. 19 we will host our inaugural TD Ryder Cup Mixer. This fun event will consist of two teams of both men and women of various handicaps. The match will begin at 8 a.m. with a BBQ buffet afterwards. This is sure to be a great time, but space is limited to just 60 players, so don’t delay and sign up on either ForeTees or in the Golf Shop. Have you noticed the new T-9 Grill call box near the 9th tee yet? Due to some vandalism we were left no other choice but to replace the British-style phone booth with this phone box. The area is not quite completed, but when it is it will be a nice addition to the 9th tee area. The best part is that the plans and the building of the call box were all done in-house by one of our TD team members, Alex Savitsky. Thanks to Alex, Kevin Kuehne, our golf course superintendent, and their staff for making this possible. ALD

SEAN CONNELLY / TAHOE DONNER

we already have planned for Sept. 13. The Trails Club has de-emphasized trail work in recent seasons, mostly because of the logistical difficulties it incurs. There is good reason, however, to believe those difficulties will diminish in the coming years. Indeed, there should be many opportunities for volunteer trail work in Tahoe Donner once construction of the Donner Lake Rim Trail proceeds through the McGlashan Springs and Bucknam Tract properties. We hope our trail building and repair events will help build a foundation of active volunteers to help with these larger projects in the future. For more information about the Trails Club, our trails and cleanup projects, and opportunities to work on invasive weed control, please visit us at TDTrails.org, or email us at tdtrails@gmail.com.

Invasive Weed Walk, Aug. 2 Join the Friends of Tahoe Donner Trails and the Truckee River Watershed Council’s Weed Warriors for an educational invasive weed walk here in Tahoe Donner. After meeting at the Clubhouse, we’ll visit multiple sites, carpooling from place to place, and walking out short distances to see a variety of infestations. Stops will include sites on Hillside, Alder Creek, Wolfgang, and Pinnacle, as well as a number of common areas. The walk will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 12 p.m. with a lunch provided by the Weed Warriors. For all the details, and to RSVP (required), please visit TDTrails.org.

Sunday’s round will be followed by dinner and awards, and a short business meeting (see below). The field is limited to the first 140 to sign up. Entry forms can be found at our website or on the bulletin board just outside the pro shop. ELECTION OF BOARD MEMBERS The annual Tahoe Donner Men’s Golf Club (TDMGC) meeting will be held during the club championship tournament banquet on Sunday, Aug. 24, where we will conduct the election of new board members. We have several openings this year and would like to gather nominations for interested candidates (either yourself or someone you think would be a good candidate). Board members serve three-year terms with board meetings held once a month during late spring, summer, and early fall. The TDMGC board is responsible for organizing the NCGA and club tournaments, skins/team games on Wednesdays, and twelve-man team competitions as well as miscellaneous fun events like

the Incline Village/Somerset Home and Away tournaments and the TD Cup. Board positions include: president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, tournament chair, membership chair, communications chair, and handicap chair. Becoming a board member is a great way to get to know the club members, bond with your fellow board members, and provide a service to the golfing community. We have a long history of leaders who have volunteered their services for many years – let’s keep this tradition going. If you are interested, please contact our nominating committee: Pat Gemma (patgemma1@att.net), Bruce Watkins (bruce@watkinscentral.com), or Jim Dill (james.l.dill@wellsfargoadvisors.com), or any of the other board members. Visit our website at tdgolfclub.com to see a list of current board members. Coming up in September is the TDMGC Memorial Tournament, Sept. 28. This year we honor George Tibi, see page 28 for more details.

TAHOE DONNER WOMEN’S GOLF CLUB The Tahoe Donner Women’s Golf Club (TDWGC) is enjoying another wonderful season of golf; the course is in fantastic shape and the weather is perfect. What better way to spend a summer day or a spectacular early evening than on the golf course? We currently have seven new active members who have discovered the world of TDWGC. They are attending the play days, enjoying the course, and having fun. Talk about fun. Glenda Bradley sunk an 84-yard chip in for a birdie on 13 during our first play day. And, last month Ingried Sigovich had a chip in on #2 and three birdies (#2, #4, #5). Way to go ladies. Members of the TDWGC are active members of Pacific Women’s Golf Association (PWGA). Last August in Tahoe Donner’s team play qualifier (two gal best ball) the team of Bettye Carmichael and Lisa Foster took first place and Leslie Williams and Shelley McGinity placed second. The four of them played at Morgan Creek in Roseville, Calif. on Tuesday July 7 and placed third in the Sacramento team play qualifier with a two best ball net of 122. Seven out of 19 teams move on to the PWGA team play two-day championship at Sevillano Links in Corning, Calif. on September 9 and 10. Good luck team! What a great way to start the 2014 season.

HAVE YOU HAD A MULLIGAN RECENTLY? No, not for a poorly played shot on the golf course – we’re talking about our delicious new signature sandwich at the T-9 Grill! The Mulligan is a grilled ham and Fontina cheese sandwich with arugula, fresh sliced tomato, and basil mayo, served on toasted Truckee Sourdough Co. artisan bread. There’s a reason this has quickly become a new favorite — it satisfies the hunger you’ve worked up taking those “other” Mulligans on the golf course, and it’s delicious too! If you aren’t that hungry, T-9 Grill also offers smaller menu items. Chips and guacamole, plus our hummus tray with seasonal veggies and pita chips are perfect for sharing (or not!). Of course, beverages and a full bar are available too.

CHECK OUT THE NEW MENU ITEMS AT THE MARINA GRILL Speaking of new favorites, a must-try selection from the Marina Grill is our new Heirloom Tomato Caprese Panini. What’s not to love about summer’s best heirloom tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, house-made basil pesto and balsamic reduction combined into one delicious flavor explosion? There are also great grab-and-go salads, wraps, and on select days, try our Cuban special. Be sure to order our refreshing new frozen fruity rum drink, the TD Slushie. With weekend beach service, you don’t even have to lift a finger!

COOL OFF AT THE MARCO POLO GRILL A new menu item at the Marco Polo Grill this year is the Bay Shrimp and Butter Lettuce Salad, a refreshing and generously-portioned blend of avocado, button mushrooms, and toy box tomatoes, served with a tarragon Dijon vinaigrette. Try a hummus tray or chips and guacamole to satisfy the betweenmeal munchies. Beer, wine and cocktails are now available as well. THE MARCO POLO GRILL WILL BE OPEN DAILY FROM 11:30 A.M. – 3 P.M.

FEATURE

PLAYABILITY BY KEVIN KUEHNE, GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

G

olf course playability and pace of play have been popular topics recently among the golf course community here at Tahoe Donner. Both are closely related and equally important components to having an enjoyable golf experience. In July’s edition of Tahoe Donner News, Rob Weizer, our head golf professional, addressed pace of play. For those of you who haven’t read it, there are some great tips for minimizing time spent on your round. When we speak about playability, we are speaking primarily about golf course conditioning, which is the Golf Maintenance Department’s main focus. As in any operation, we must prioritize our tasks and areas of attention which, in respective order, include: • Greens • Tees • Approaches and green surrounds • Landing areas and fairways • Roughs • Bunkers • Areas outside of playing surfaces Ideally, we would be able to pay equal attention to all areas, but in the short growing season we have here at Tahoe Donner this is often difficult to do. Most of our attention during the season goes toward our playing surfaces. Efforts being made to increase playability include mowing and string trimming drainage ditches that cross many of our fairways and other popular landing areas in the rough, such as left of the fairway bunkers on holes nine and 11. We will continue to attend to such areas as well as target new ones that are currently native. A large part of playability and conditioning is affected by how we irrigate. As property managers, we spend the majority of our time monitoring, adjusting, and repairing our irrigation system. One of our goals that we are committed to, which is also referenced in Tahoe Donner’s Strategic Plan, is to promote efficiencies in energy and water use. To this end, we make sure we are applying water only where we want it. The golf course has both full-circle and adjustable part-circle heads. As part of our startup each year we check our part-circle heads, and make adjustments or replace necessary components. Above-ground components, such as irrigation heads, age more rapidly than those that are below ground, in particular our part-circle drives. Over the past 12 years we have replaced nearly every rotor on the course, and in recent years we have started replacing actual heads due to cost efficiency and performance in water distribution uniformity. This year we are also working with a new irrigation software system, which offers us increased control over our 1,500+ irrigation heads on the course. A few of the new features that aid in our efficiency include: • Management by area rather than by program only.

24

| Tahoe Donner News | August 2014

• Down to the second run-time control on each individual station rather than to the minute. • Increased control on running intervals and soak times.

This new software system also allows us to use wireless sensors in the field. These will help us to even further monitor how we irrigate and will provide us with readings such as moisture levels, soil temperature, and soil salinity. It is our continued intention to provide the best possible playing conditions for our members and guests, while at the same time maintaining ALYSON STETZ / TAHOE DONNE healthy turf using as little water as possible. This is a delicate balance on a course that is over 35 years old, especially one that sees as much play and traffic as Tahoe Donner. It is far easier said than done. Since television started covering PGA Tour events, particularly the Masters Tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club, public perception has been leaning toward the notion that green and lush is better. Aesthetically, this may be true, but relative to plant health and conditioning a drier firmer surface often increases playability, playing faster in terms of ground-game roll. The farther a ball rolls, the fewer shots it takes (hopefully) to reach the green. Fewer shots = shorter rounds = happy golfers. In recent years, golf courses have been trending toward a more natural approach to golf course maintenance, which has in turn given managers the opportunity to commit to sustainability. A recent example of a firm and fast course that was not green and lush was seen at this year’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, which was deliberately redesigned and changed to decrease water usage along with other maintenance inputs. Because of our soil and the amount of rock that exists in it, it is nearly impossible to provide completely green, dry, firm and fast conditions that will hold up to traffic on an everyday basis. The best we can do is monitor course moisture on a regular basis, and use the tools and resources we have available to come as close to this as possible. It is important to remember that brown is not necessarily bad. In our efforts for water use reduction, we will inevitably see brown areas on our golf course. While we do run irrigation heads to water dry areas on the course, the most efficient way for us to manage smaller dry spots is to supplement moisture via hand-watering with a hose. By doing so, we apply water exactly where it is needed, rather than running heads, which has a high potential to overwater surrounding areas, decreasing playability. Other remarkable, and much appreciated, efforts have been made by our membership in recent years. This year, two volunteer days helped to clean up non-turf areas prior to golf course opening, which yielded more than 90 cubic yards of organic waste! In addition, our membership has shown great diligence in filling divots on the course with sand and seed. Many of our golfers go through multiple bottles per round, using our refill stations located near the tee boxes on the first, fifth, 10th and 14th holes. Filling divots helps us keep turf on our playing sur-

ER

faces, which if not done can have a significant adverse effect on course playability. This season, the Tahoe Donner Men’s Club has assigned a specific hole to each member to pay especially close attention to, filling divots and fixing pitch marks on greens on their respective holes (approximately 12 members per hole). At the close of the season a decision will be made as to which hole was best cared for, and the responsible group will be publicly acknowledged. Special thanks from the Golf Maintenance Department to all those involved!

KYLE KELLY / TAHOE DON

EAT + DRINK = HAPPY BY MICHAEL PETERS, DIRECTOR OF FOOD & BEVERAGE

DON’T WORRY, BE HOPPY They are all yellow and bubbly but don’t be mistaken: beer comes in a rainbow of flavors from sweet and soft to crispy and hoppy. You are sure to find something in these light-colored beers of summer. Kolsches, cream ales and blondes are a hybrid style of beer, meaning they are brewed with lager yeast, much like some of the bigger American beers, but at higher temperatures like ales, which can add fruity notes to the finish. If you like a crisper taste, pilsners, both American and German, display grainy and sweet malts that are clean with a touch of bitterness. Today’s American pale ales, one of the most popular choices, can be a bright hop bomb, with robust flavors of grass, pine and grapefruit with just the right amount of caramel sweetness. Or search out a California common (also called a steam beer), its fair complexion hides its foresty, minty hops and firm toasted malt. Everyone loves blondes… heck I even married one! American blondes lean toward bread flavor, think toast or biscuit, with some grassy hops and just a touch of bitterness to give it some kick. Where German blondes are usually stronger than they look, round honey sweetness with soft notes of lemon pair with

crisp bitterness and smooth alcohol in the finish. For some lighter afternoon sippers try a Kolsch. With soft malt and fruity sweetness, these are clean and dry. A Helles lager is hailed for its malt forward grainy taste that isn’t too sweet; noble hops lend a touch of spice. White pepper and lemon are trademarks of Saison, a traditional summer-style beer born in rural Belgium. You can always fall back on a safe and friendly Hefeweizen or wheat beer. These are usually made with a blend of 50-50 malted wheat and barley. They are top fermented and unfiltered so appear cloudy in the glass. They have notes of banana and cloves and can be enjoyed with a slice of lemon, sometimes used to cut the wheat. Too hot for beer? Make yourself a Shandy. This is a 50-50 mix of lemon soda such as Sprite or 7-Up, or lemonade, and a beer of your choice. Feeling kooky? Try it with a Porter. The contrast of coffee and lemon zing create a smoky sensation that will drink like a cordial. If it all sounds too exotic, just grab an old favorite. My wife is happy with a Bud Light, a babysitter and a lake to dip her toes in. Just be sure to enjoy your summer.

INSIDER TIP Are you aware of all the places to get a great beer this summer here at Tahoe Donner? There are more than you may know. Beer and other refreshing summer libations are available at: THE LODGE: Stop by and check out our two new taps, making a total of five beers on tap. We also offer a full bar and an incredible wine list. PIZZA ON THE HILL: Serving beer, wine and low-proof cocktails. Have a nice drink while you relax on one of our outside couches and watch the children play bingo (Monday nights) or enjoy a movie on the big screen (Friday nights). MARCO POLO GRILL: We now have a full license at the Trout Creek Rec Center (pool deck and grassy BBQ area only). Enjoy an icecold beer, a peach Bellini, Mike’s Hard Strawberry Lemonade or a Jose Cuervo margarita while you sit and sip poolside. Available daily from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. during food service for July and August. BEACH CLUB MARINA: Put your toes in the sand and a drink in your hand down at the beach this summer. We offer a full bar plus beer and wine with beach service on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Try our signature TD Slushie, a frozen concoction of rum, strawberry and piña colada. Available every day from 4-5 p.m. TD Slushies are only $5. T-9 GRILL: Serving our golf community downstairs at the Lodge with Bloody Marys, margaritas, iced tea cocktails, wine and beer from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. daily.

FROM THE COVENANTS COMMITTEE Tahoe Donner Association’s Covenants Committee continues to be concerned about the extreme fire danger we are facing in Tahoe Donner and throughout the Sierra forests. The association has been placing fire safety signs as reminders for all of us, and as a part of our information campaign we are asking landlords, rental offices, and staff to be aware. Remember, all tenants do not necessarily receive the Tahoe Donner News magazine and weekly email news blasts. We are all in this together.

FIRE SAFETY FAQS IS IT OK TO HAVE A SMALL FIRE IN THE BACKYARD SO MY CHILDREN CAN ROAST MARSHMALLOWS?

Currently, the Tahoe Donner Covenants rules do not allow “campfires, bonfires, or fireworks of any kind.” A “cooking, ceremonial, or warming fire” is allowed but only if it is enclosed in a commercially manufactured burning device, such as an outdoor fireplace or chiminea, which has screening and/or a spark arrestor with a maximum of a 1/8-inch screen opening, to prevent the escape of sparks and coals. This fire-burning device needs to be positioned in a safe location with good defensible space around it. Please contact the compliance inspector at 530-587-9406 if you have additional questions. If a fire is not enclosed in a device that is mentioned above, and is in a rock fire ring for instance, then the property owner is subject to a covenants violation fine of $1,000 or more.

fires to increase rapidly in size and intensity before first responders can contain them. When a Red Flag warning is in place, it is suggested to avoid any outdoor activity such as target shooting, campfires, or anything that can create a spark near dry vegetation or yard work. THINKING OF BUILDING A FENCE?

Sheryl Walker, ASO Manager

We would like to remind homeowners and contractors that any changes made to the exterior of your home or to your lot must be approved in advance by the Architectural Standards Committee (ASC). We continue to encounter a number of unapproved wire fences, which have been installed without approval of the ASC. If you are considering adding a fence you can obtain the necessary application from the Architectural Standards Office (ASO). The location, primary use and design are of utmost importance since any owners’ fence may be viewed by their neighbors. In reviewing a fence for approval, the ASC considers various interests along with the need for an enclosure. For that reason, all fencing applications go through the neighbor notification process before going to the full committee for review. The following factors will be taken into consideration by the ASC: 1. Whether the fence design should be horizontal or vertical, and whether the lot is flat or sloped. 2. The size of the lot and the area proposed to be fenced. Fences may not be located within any setback area. 3. The architectural style of the fence will be considered. No solid fencing is allowed. 4. The use must serve to protect small children or pets, although low decorative or spot fencing for screening and landscaping may be allowed after review. 5. The height is restricted to a maximum of 6 feet and approved screening may be required. 6. Any wire used must be plastic coated or factory color treated in approved colors. All metal support posts, railings and hardware must be of the same color. If you have any questions regarding the fence application or any proposed exterior project please stop by ASO and we can offer assistance. You may also give us a call at 530-587-9407 or send an email to aso@tahoedonner.com.

“ We have been absentee owners of two residents at Tahoe Donner for 40 + years so feel that we know the area pretty well. We have just sold our larger home and will now look for a smaller condo for our kids to enjoy. Alison Elder did a wonderful job of assisting us in selling that home. We were pleased with the fast movement of the property. Alison and her team were very helpful in getting the house ready to sell.”
