BULLETIN BOARD
GPC SOLICITS MEMBER INPUT FOR GENERAL PLAN UPDATE The General Plan Committee (GPC) is seeking your input on how you visualize the present and future lifestyles of Tahoe Donner Association. Starting in September, Tahoe Donner personnel will use iPads to electronically conduct surveys developed by the GPC at all Tahoe Donner amenities to garner feedback from the membership on the vision and capital investment priorities for Tahoe Donner’s future. The survey will also be available online.
WHAT IS A GENERAL PLAN? A general plan provides long-term (20 years) guidelines to assist our staff and board members in making sound decisions on providing services and facilities for the association’s membership. The last general plan document was completed in 2010. Much of that work is still valid and many of the recommendations of that plan have been realized. However, the plan is a living document that is updated every five years to reflect market conditions and updated capital development fund priorities.
WHY CONDUCT A SURVEY? In 2011, the board reviewed the draft 2010 general plan, approving the first five years of the plan and conditionally approving the remain-

ing 15 years. Recognizing that membership views on association policies and procedures may have changed and will need to be incorporated into long-term goals, the GPC has created a survey to encourage member involvement during the general plan update process.
A WIN-WIN SITUATION We’ll be encouraging our membership to participate with great prizes, including our top prize which will give one lucky winner a chance to have your assessment fee covered in 2016! There will be many additional prizes for a variety of Tahoe Donner offerings, and anyone who participates, whether in person or online, will be eligible. For more information on the general plan, see tahoedonner.com/2030-general-plan.

CELL TOWER CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY
The Tahoe Donner board of directors approved American Tower
Company (ATC) to obtain development and agency approvals for utility improvements for a mono-pine cell tower, and to establish lease agreements with interested industry service providers. The cell tower will be located near the top of Eagle Rock Chairlift. Throughout this last year, ATC has successfully obtained approvals from the Town of Truckee Planning Commission, along with necessary building permits, allowing installation of all underground utilities this June. With the actual tower and remaining infrastructure to be placed in early August, we anticipate tower operations will begin this fall. With T-Mobile as the anchor tenant, cell phone users may find direct reception improvements where software compatibility and appropriate roaming plans are in place. Check with your current service provider for more information. A mono-pine cell tower was approved for construction and is anticipated to be completed this fall, with T-Mobile signing a lease agreement.

August has arrived and it has been a great summer of riding. The trails have held up great, and the summer rainstorms have kept the inevitable dust down. I’ve seen more people out enjoying the trails this summer than ever before. Come join us! This month, we get a special treat as the Tahoe Luna Chix mountain bike team will be leading their weekly rides on the trails here at Tahoe Donner. We were going to stay at the outlook until the stars came out, but we had to retreat because a pretty bad thunderstorm came racing in on us. TD 4 Wheelers June was very busy for the TD 4 Wheelers. Besides a great deal of work getting ready for the Sierra 4x4 Trails and Ales event, we had several fun trail runs. As part of the Adopt-A-Campground program through the US Forest Service, we took a run down the Rubicon Trail

to Miller Lake. The campsite we adopted was in pretty bad shape. We replaced a Forest Service sign, dug out the fire pits and cut long weeds and grasses. We also had to cut up some limbs and branches that had fallen in the camping area. It was a fun day of work on the trail. We invite members, guests and public to explore more than 50 miles of trails and fire access service roads, covering approximately 4,000 acres of common land owned and maintained by Tahoe Donner Association. The trail system offers a variety of terrain, from the level meadow trail near Northwoods Clubhouse to scenic vista points above Donner Lake and Euer Valley. The Johnson Canyon overlook at trail marker 22 is over 7,000 feet in elevation and offers spectacular views and challenging terrain. We have updated and improved our summer trail maps. A new feature to our trail map is the addition of the summer and Cross Country ski trail names and wayfinding signs plus color coding for differing ability levels, and we have enlarged some areas of the map with insets for easier reading. Overall, you’ll also find increased accuracy of trail locations. Perhaps the most useful feature of our trail maps is the descriptions of the trails, color coded by ability level. It’s a helpful tool for planning an outdoor outing (see box below). Much more valuable information is included in the trail map, so be sure to pick up your copy today. They are available at Member Services, Bikeworks, the Equestrian Center, Trout Creek, and the main trailhead kiosks, in addition to local bike shops. New this year, we have implemented a public summer trail pass program. This program is a voluntary monetary contribution for public trail users. Its purpose is to recognize the financial commitment and trail maintenance efforts the association and members have made and continues to make on the 50+ miles of multi-use single-track and double-track summer trail system. For those who are not Tahoe Donner members, a suggested donation of $5 for adult and $2 for child daily use, or $30 for adult and $15 for child summer pass is encouraged. Donations may be made at Alder Creek Adventure Center, Bikeworks, and Member Services; online at tahoedonner.com/shop; and at select iron rangers at the major trailheads of Glacier Way, Teton Way and the Euer Valley gateway located at Alder Creek Adventure Center. Trail access for members and guests of members is free. The Tahoe Donner trail system supports the varied membership use and encourages continual exploration and stewardship of the community and recreational space. Get out and explore today!
SUNDANCE: This trail is a mix of singletrack and dirt road, offering great views of the Euer Valley and Carpenter Ridge before turning back east through thinned Jeffrey pines and mules’ ears. (1.6 mile) THREE BRIDGES AND A CINNAMON TWIST: A popluar section of singletrack that winds its way into the Euer Valley. It’s a great option to start or finish your adventure. (1.5 mile) HAWK’S PEAK: A singletrack that climbs over 600 feet up the south face of Hawk’s Peak. This trail is fairly steep with little shade, so remember to bring sunscreen and water. (1.5 mile) HIDDEN GEM: One of Tahoe Donner’s most popular and challenging trails, Hidden Gem braids through fir trees with great viewpoints as it heads down into Euer Valley. (1.3 miles) MOTHER LODE: This mile-long singletrack is fun and flowy as you twist and turn your way between Firewalker and Hasting’s Cutoff. PICKLEBALL
Paces as the Fastest Growing Sport in America BY ASHLEY QUADROS
20
| Tahoe Donner News | August 2015
It’s a newer sensation, but it’s not a new sport. Pickleball is a cross between badminton, tennis and table tennis and it’s winning over the hearts of many athletes today. In 1965, friends Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum were looking to entertain their bored kids. They suggested the kids play badminton, but were unable to locate all of the equipment needed, so they improvised by using ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball.
At first, the net was at badminton height, but after finding the ball bounced well on asphalt, they lowered the net. Their children loved the made-up game and as they hit the ball back and forth, rules came about and the game was born. The game’s quirky name came from Pritchard’s wife, Joan, who was a competitive rower. She referred to the “pickle boat,” the slowest vessel in a race where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats. Later,

the family’s cocker spaniel was named Pickles after the game. He loved to chase the ball and run off with it, believing it to be no one else’s but Pickles’ ball. Originally created as backyard family entertainment, the friends began playing the game with neighbors and the sport eventually spread by word of mouth. By 1972, it had grown in popularity so much that a corporation was formed to protect the creation of the game. While the sport remained modestly well-liked for decades, word-of-mouth advertising prevailed and by 1990, the sport was being played in all 50 states. Today, pickleball courts can be found at many tennis centers around the world, including Tahoe Donner Tennis Center as of this summer, thanks to Director of Tennis Ian Mindell. “I played pickleball for the first time in early June at Granlibakken in Tahoe City,” recalled Mindell. “We were invited to a USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) ambassadors’ retreat, so Doug Kaut, our head pro, and I headed over to check it out.” Within minutes of arriving, the two were whisked out on the courts and started playing. “It was a great time, as some of the elements of my tennis game translated very well to pickleball. I was hooked right away. I hope that others will try it and enjoy it as much as I have,” Mindell added. Mindell enjoyed his introduction to pickleball so much, the decision to add pickleball courts to Tahoe Donner Tennis Center was made within weeks of that first game. The
Tennis Center now has two courts dedicated for pickleball play. “I think everyone should try pickleball, whether you are a die-hard tennis player or have never picked up a racket of any kind,” he said. “It’s fun and easy to get started yet still challenging. Most importantly, it is a great form of exercise.” Unlike tennis, pickleball is played on a smaller court, extending 44 feet long by 20 feet wide, which is about one-fourth the size of a tennis court. Because of this shorter distance, it requires less mobility, giving people of all ages and abilities more opportunities to maintain a rally and react to opponent advances. But for Mindell, the social element is most enjoyable. “Most players of all levels are willing to get out and play with you,” said Mindell. “They encourage you to have fun, keep trying
and help grow the sport.” (See Mindell’s pickle tip on page 23). As testament to the growth of the sport, pickleball courts can now be found at 14 locations in the Lake Tahoe vicinity, and that’s only counting North Lake Tahoe and Truckee. While most folks play for fun, it’s also played competitively by more experienced players; today there is even an International Federation of Pickleball (IFP) with member organizations representing their countries and enforcing the game’s bylaws and international rules. Likewise, the non-profit USAPA is designed to promote all things pickleball, including official rules, tournaments, clinics, rankings and more. The organization relies heavily on ambassadors who have pledged to volunteer their time to help promote pickleball and the USAPA in

their designated area of representation. And right here in Tahoe Donner, we have our own pickleball ambassador, Joel Korelitz. “I like competing in pickleball events, and try to establish competition ladders at various facilities,” said Korelitz, who has lived part-time in Tahoe Donner since 1986. “I am an ambassador for USAPA, and devote a lot of time to promoting the game by organizing demos and clinics
at various community centers and private and public tennis facilities.” When teaching his clinics, Korelitz helps new players learn everything they need to know about pickleball. Even with large groups of 30-40 people, he notes that most people with a tennis background pick up the game within fifteen minutes. But while pickleball does share similarities with tennis, a tennis background

isn’t needed to understand this sport. For those who have never played tennis, the game is still generally learned within an hour’s instruction. In Korelitz’s opinion, the hardest aspect of pickleball is not the physical activity involved, but learning how to keep score. While physical limitations can prevent many athletes from playing the sports they love, for the most part age or limitation does not seem to be a deterrent in being able to play this game. “There are very proficient players in their 80s,” said Korelitz. “It is also an easy way for youngsters to learn to play both tennis and pickleball. The smaller paddle combined with the slower ball allows for their quick satisfaction and successes.” Korelitz has witnessed parents attempting to teach small children tennis on the courts without much success. Tennis rackets tend to be difficult for small children to carry and maneuver, and it’s more challenging for them to hit the balls with enough force to clear the net. Pickleball, on the other hand, is great for small children. “The game is multi-generational,” said Korelitz. “We frequently see grandparents playing pickleball with grandchildren. Most games
“One of the first things I realized when I started to play pickleball was the value of getting to the net after the return of serve,” said Mindell. “In tennis the tendency to stay back after you return serve is a good tactic as the serve tends to be a weapon for most players; however, in pickleball the servers must let the return of serve bounce giving the offensive opportunity to the returners as they now have time to get to the net first. The return doesn’t have to be hit hard; the main focus of that shot should be to get it back deep at the servers feet, giving you time to get to
the net and make the serving team come up with great shots to win the point. Remember, in pickleball you can only score points when you are serving; so as the returning team, don’t stay back and let the servers take the offensive position at the net first. If they do, you are going to be in for a long day at the office trying to come up with one great passing shot after another. Returning the serve and rushing the net is a great way to put pressure on the servers and it gives you your best chance to get a side out so you can then serve and start to score points.”
are played as doubles, so differing abilities are not as big an issue as in tennis.” The paddles are also lightweight, making them easier to carry; the courts are smaller and nets are lower, so the balls don’t need to be hit as far or high; and the balls travel slower, making it easier for people of any age to react. Pickleball truly is an all-ages sport. Like Mindell, Korelitz is also relatively new to pickleball. He was introduced to the game by an 83-year-old friend earlier this year, and is now a pickleball ambassador, which illustrates how easy it is to really learn. “I started in January of 2015, and was instantly hooked,” recalled Korelitz. “It is addictive. Forty-plus years ago, I played three to four sets of tennis a day, but I had to give it up because of physical problems. Golf became my next passion, so now I have golf and pickleball. Pickleball is social, physical, economical and environmental. These are basically the reasons for its popularity.” Interested in learning pickleball at Tahoe Donner Tennis Center? Come on out to see why pickleball is becoming one of the fastest growing sports in America. Every Saturday there is a Pickleball Welcome Center Clinic at 12 p.m. The cost is just $13 for members and $16 for their guests, and includes all equipment needed. Parties may also bring their own equipment or buy pickleball rackets and balls at the Tennis Center if desired. “This clinic will introduce players to the basics of the game including strategy, rules and scoring,” explained Mindell. “The basics of pickleball are easy to pick up so the learning curve to this game is much shorter than traditional sports like golf or tennis.” In addition to Saturday afternoon clinics, the Tennis Center also offers open play days for those who just want to show up and play every Saturday and Sunday afternoon from 1 -3 p.m. and Wednesday nights from 5 – 7 p.m. To learn even more about pickleball, visit usapa.org and pickleballchannel.com. We hope to see you pickling about on the courts soon.

If you are out on the Tahoe Donner trails early on Saturday, August 8 you may be lucky enough to see some of the nation’s most talented ultra runners. As participants in the inaugural Sierra Crest Ultra Run, they will be taking on the challenge of running 30-kilometer or 50-kilometer courses on some of the best single tracks with spectacular scenic views in the area. Both the 30-kilometer (18.64 miles) and the 50-kilometer (30.07 miles) races start at Alder Creek Adventure Center and finish at Auburn Ski Club’s Training Center on Boreal Ridge Road at the top of Donner Summit. The 30-kilometer course climbs up to the Drifter Ridge before joining the Donner Lake Rim Trail past Summit Lake and Castle Peak and crossing under the freeway to finish at Auburn Ski Club’s Training Center — that’s 3,493 feet of climbing. The 50-kilometer race drops into the Euer Valley before climbing up to the Drifter Ridge — a challenging 4,660 feet of climbing. The first overall man and woman of the 50k will each receive “spike runners,” handcrafted sculptures by local artist Pat Blide, using salvaged railroad spikes. Additionally first, second, and third place men and women in both races will receive gift certificates from Tahoe Mountain Sports. All race finishers will receive a commemorative mason jar mug plus raffle tickets for a chance to win some great prizes. Organizers expect this event to grow each year to become a fundraiser to help the junior biathlon programs at Auburn Ski Club, a 501(c)3 committed to encouraging lifetime participation in snowsports. Race sponsors include Tahoe Donner Association, Tahoe Mountain Sports, Salomon, Hammer Nutrition, The Brewing Lair, Truckee Donner Land Trust, and Tahoe National Forest. Registration is open through Thursday, August 6. Volunteers are needed to help with the five aid stations along the course to keep runners fueled and hydrated. Please contact sjones@tahoedonner.com if you can help. For more information see the website sierracrest50k.org. To see more of artist Pat Blide’s work, see riversideartstudios.com.

The event included kids’ games, a shine-and-show contest, a raffle, a bounce house, cornhole, beer tasting, BBQ dinner and a trail ride the following day. culture. In total, $1,945 was raised for the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund. “Words cannot express how appreciative we are to both the Tahoe Donner 4 Wheelers Club and staff at Tahoe Donner,” said Merle Fajans, co-chair of the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund. “The money raised from the Sierra 4x4 Trails and Ales event has exceeded expectations and will help support our local community. We are beyond thankful for their generosity and to all the individuals who came out to support us and the event.” Approximately 300 people were in attendance, 60 of whom entered their vehicle into the shine-and-show contest, in addition to 28 people who participated in the trail ride the following day. One of the shine-and-show contest categories was the “People’s Choice Award.” “Attendees were invited to cast their vote for the 4x4 they liked the best. The voting was so close we had two winners. The first one, as you can imagine, was a totally decked out Jeep,” said Bill Ratcliff, 4 Wheelers Club president. “But the second award was won by a 3-year-old who entered his little electric ride-on toy Jeep. When he won, he wore a grin that lit up the entire venue.”
Of the 60 vehicles in the running, the following individuals were winners in their respective categories: • Cleanest: Don Gerbi - Truckee, Calif. • Dirtiest: Karl Huie - Tiburon, Calif. • Most Rugged Tires: Erika Scyphers Sparks, Nev. • Best Rims: Matt Smith - Gardnerville, Nev. • Most Trail Ready: Pat Sullivan - Washoe Valley, Nev. • Best Stock: Todd Freitas - Truckee, Calif. • Best Classic: John Briggs - Kings Beach, Calif. • People’s Choice (two winners): Russ Liedholm - Truckee, Calif. and Maddox Colombo (3 years old) - Sacramento, Calif. “This event was successful because of all the hard work of the club members and Tahoe Donner employees who devoted so much time and effort in helping to plan and organize the event,” said Ratcliff. “They all are professional, quality folks who grab the bull by the horns and get things done!” Ratcliff added that as a result of the event, his club saw an increase of 20 new club members. Sierra 4x4 Trails and Ales was such a success, the team at Tahoe Donner and the 4 Wheelers Club plan to host the event again next summer. For more information on the club, see td4wheelers.com.

DEFENSIBLE SPACE AND YARD WASTE OPTIONS Owning a home in the mountains comes with the responsibility of creating and maintaining defensible space for wildfire protection. This drought year, as the weather warms and vegetation dries, it will be more important than ever to clear dead wood and brush from your property. To help ensure our community is prepared for a potential wild land forest fire, the Town of Truckee took steps to speed the removal of combustible material from residential properties. With new programs for free yard waste drop-off and a discounted yard-waste dumpster, these options are intended to provide residents a convenient and cost-effective method to dispose of larger amounts of material over a shorter time frame. The discounted yard-waste dumpster program has been extended through the month of August. Additionally, the curbside green bag program is intended for routine maintenance of no more than four bags per week throughout the season. For more information, see http://goo.gl/m7vYkR.

The Social Host Liability Ordinance, which became effective on July 9, aims to reduce underage drinking and substance abuse. In 2014, The Truckee Tahoe Unified School District administered the California Healthy Kids Survey and found that the alcohol and marijuana use rates for our local students were 8-13 percent higher than the California average. The Social Host Liability Ordinance prohibits any person from hosting or allowing a party or gathering to be hosted upon his or her public or private property where any person under the age of 21 is using or consuming alcohol, marijuana, or controlled substances. A violation of the Social Host Liability Ordinance can occur even if the person responsible for the gathering did not intend for minors to possess or consume alcohol, marijuana, or controlled substances but did nothing to stop or try to prevent the use. “The intent of this ordinance is not to punish those in need of police assistance but rather deal with those who show disregard for the safety of Truckee’s youth,” Truckee Police Captain Robert Left-
wich stated. Violations of the Social Host Liability Ordinance are administrative violations and therefore not subject to criminal prosecution or arrest. If a violation occurs, the host will receive an administrative citation and fine as well as information as to how to appeal the citation. It is important to note that anyone who calls the Truckee Police Department seeking assistance from law enforcement to stop or prevent a gathering on his or her property will not be subject to the penalties in this ordinance. “Our priority has and always will be the safety of our citizens, and we will continue to apply solutions that put the health and safety of our local youth first,” said Truckee Police Chief Adam McGill. To report an event where you believe underage drinking is occurring, please contact the Truckee Police Department’s Dispatch at 530-550-2320.
