HONORING TAHOE DONNER’S VETERANS BY ASHLEY QUADROS This November, as our nation celebrates Veterans Day on Nov. 11, Tahoe Donner would like to take this opportunity to recognize several veterans who live or work right here at Tahoe Donner. We appreciate all who have served our country in the past and present, including our very own general manager, Lt. Col. Robb Etnyre, who is a U.S. Marines Corps veteran, along with additional team members and Tahoe Donner residents. Sgt. Ron Neibert, Tahoe Donner’s loss prevention manager, also served in the military. “Veterans Day is very important to those who served in the armed forces,” he said. “It is an opportunity for veterans to take pride in their service and an opportunity for the American people to express their appreciation for those who served and for those who lost their lives in the defense of our nation.” Neibert served in the U.S. Air Force for four years as a security policeman. Tahoe Donner’s field supervisor for general maintenance, Fred Zapponi, shared Niebert’s views. Zapponi was an Airborne Missile Control technician in the U.S. Navy during the final years of the Vietnam War, and explained

his perspective of Veterans Day: “Veterans Day is an important reminder of the service and sacrifice rendered by a few, for the benefit of the many.” Outside of the Tahoe Donner team, our community has many veterans as well as active military. Capt. William Schooler served in the Marine Corps from 1958-1963, and said the military changed his perception of life more than he ever thought possible. “It taught me the strength that comes from being a part of something greater than yourself. No matter how good your skillset may be, it’s of no use unless it contributes to the whole,” he explained. “The Corps helped develop an inner strength I never knew I had. It taught me resilience, the ability to endure and not quit. It taught me what discipline and respect really mean.” What does Veterans Day mean to Schooler? “This day always reminds me of sacrifice. Men and women may join the military to serve God and Country but they do not die for God and Country. They die for each other,” he said. While most servicemen and women say their lives are profoundly impacted by their time in the military, Schooler’s experiences shaped his life perhaps even more than his peers. “The greatest gift the Marine Corps gave me was to meet my wife! After 51 years, I still remain grateful for that gift.” Schooler isn’t the only one grateful for his service and experience. Lt. Col. John Dundas of Tahoe Donner, who served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1992, comes from a military family with his great-great grandfather, father and brother all serving our country. For him, the
Lt. Col. Robb Etnyre, Tahoe Donner Association general manager
army started as a sense of duty and obligation and transformed into “teamwork, camaraderie, patriotism, professionalism, and a sense of serving something larger than myself.” For Dundas, Veterans Day isn’t just a day to remember his own personal sacrifice, but “a day to recall the personal sacrifices of all those service members from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard who served before me, alongside me, and after me. It’s a time for all Americans to remember that freedom is not free.” Sgt. Ralph Schindler, who served in the Marine Corps from 1971 to 1975, summed it up nicely. “Veterans Day is a day when all Americans should be thankful to those who serve,” he said. And thankful we are.
Tahoe Donner would like to treat veterans and active military to a special evening this Veterans Day. We invite you and your family to attend a Veterans Day party on Nov. 11 at the Lodge Restaurant and Pub, honoring all servicemen and servicewomen with free appetizers on The Porch from 5-6:30 p.m. and drink specials in The Pub all night long. Following the party, stay for dinner with your family and enjoy 20 percent off your bill (discount excludes alcohol, but bring in your own bottle of wine and we’ll waive the corkage fee).
BULLETIN BOARD
EAT + DRINK = HAPPY BY MICHAEL PETERS, DIRECTOR OF FOOD & BEVERAGE
THANKFUL FOR THANKSGIVING Most stories of Thanksgiving history start with the harvest celebration of the pilgrims and the Native Americans that took place in the autumn of 1621. They did have a three-day feast in celebration of a good harvest with local natives, but this first Thanksgiving was simply a gathering. There is little evidence that this feast of gratitude led directly to our modern Thanksgiving Day holiday. It wasn’t until 1798 that George Washington proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving, and it was not made popular until Sara Hale (author of “Mary had a Little Lamb”), fascinated by the book “Diary of a Pilgrim,” launched a 30-year campaign to establish it as a holiday. Part of her plan consisted of publishing recipes for stuffing, pumpkin pie and mashed potatoes, which some believe has helped establish them as main staples of every Thanksgiving feast. In 1863, President Lincoln made it a national holiday to be celebrated on the last Thursday of November. FDR later moved it forward one week to assist in Depression era holiday retail sales. This was met with resistance, so in 1941 he signed a law moving it back. Since 1947 the President of the United States has been presented with a live turkey. John F. Kennedy was the first president to reportedly spare the turkey given to him. In 1987, Ronald Reagan was the first to grant the turkey a presidential pardon, which has since become a permanent annual tradition. Pardoned turkeys spend the remainder of their lives—typically only a few months, since most domestic tur-
keys die within two years of birth— in a pen at George Washington’s Mount Vernon in Virginia. When it comes to Thanksgiving dinner, turkey is the star, but it sometimes shares the spotlight with ham. Gravy must flow and potatoes must be mashed, but concerning stuffing, things can get a bit heated. Northerners call it “stuffing,” while those in the south call it by a much more formal name, “dressing,” and some Pennsylvanians enjoy “filling.” The south insists that any dressing be cornbread-based. Some like it moist, some like it crispy, I like it all. I say call it what you like and just make sure there is plenty for me. Let’s not forget, cranberries get their one day of fame every November. Twenty percent of all cranberries consumed are eaten on Thanksgiving. Contrary to popular belief, Native Americans did not eat cranberries; they did, however, find them extremely useful for dying fabric and decorating pottery. Finally, pumpkin pie for dessert! It’s one of my favorites, but when giving thanks, especially involving pie, one should never limit one’s choices. I mean, honestly, is there any way to go wrong with pie? I am thankful for them all. Just make sure there is plenty of whipped cream or ice cream to go around. For some great wine pairings with your feast, if you have a big buttery palate I would
lead you toward a chardonnay, but I would prefer a drier riesling or the more mineral characteristics of a gewürztraminer. If you feel like red, try a medium-bodied pinot noir. Want to go with grains instead of grapes? Keep it simple and choose a nice brown ale (the Swiss army knife of food pairing) as it goes with anything. Or go a little more seasonal with an Oktoberfest or seasonal amber ale. Don’t feel like cooking and doing dishes? Then come join us here at The Lodge Restaurant & Pub for our Thanksgiving buffet. But don’t wait too long to make a reservation because it sells out quickly. Whatever you eat or drink, Tahoe Donner wishes you and your family a happy and safe Thanksgiving. Gobble, gobble!

TAHOE DONNER GIVING FUND COMING SOON The Tahoe Donner Giving Fund (TDGF) will officially launch in 2015. This fund is a new non-profit program designed to allow Tahoe Donner members the opportunity to make charitable contributions to benefit the greater Truckee/Tahoe area. Contributing to the TDGF is on a volunteer basis and is a tax deductible contribution. The TDGF is part of the Tahoe Donner Homeowners Association, but no assessment money will go into the fund and the fund will reimburse the association for any services rendered. The fund is administered by the Tahoe Donner board and assisted by a volunteer committee made up of Tahoe Donner homeowners in good standing who are passionate about giving back to this community. The newly established committee, the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund operations and grant committee, will recommend actions and funding to support the following local areas of interest: • Health and human services • Environment, conservation and animal welfare • Education and youth development • Arts and culture The board appointed the initial committee members to include: Merle Fajans and Dick Gander as co-chairs, Marilyn Disbrow, Jennifer Jordon, Suzanne Sullivan, Joan Woodard, Cam Murphy, Barbara Czerwinski and Janet Zipser Zipkin. There are three open seats on the committee; contact Dick Gander at rwgander@yahoo.com to volunteer. “The board would like to thank the volunteers for the new committee and for their effort over the past few months in creating this important new way for homeowners that live part-time or full-time in Tahoe Donner to support and give back to our local community,” said Jim Stang, Tahoe Donner board president. The Tahoe Donner Giving Fund volunteer operations and grant committee will create a funding and marketing plan over the next few months for fundraising in 2015. The Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation (TTCF) will provide all legal, accounting and investment
services for the TDGF. In addition, TTCF will assist with the grant making process to local non-profit organizations. With over 25,000 Tahoe Donner members, if every member donated just $10 to raise more than $250,000 in local funding, the Tahoe Donner Giving Fund has the potential to make a significant difference in our community. Tahoe Donner and the TDGF team look forward to the endless possibilities coming to the community this 2015 year.

perform a thorough inspection during the summer months. Staff coordinates all buses during the summer and winter months, and safety inspections are done on the buses monthly with frequent servicing. These buses are used during the winter and summer and are being utilized more every year for activities and events, such as Truckee Thursdays, day camps and special event transportation. Our staff manages all of these tasks using software called Manager Plus. This program allows us to manage a large number of assets, creating recurring service schedules, storing information and tasks, tracking maintenance requests, and calculating cost, labor and parts. Our main goal of the summer is to make sure our equipment is in good shape for the season and our lifts are ready and operational for passengers.
Planning and Development Frequently during the summer, we take on small tasks for the capital team to help complete projects. We help around the association during busy periods and events, which includes the summer concert, Fourth of July and Waterpalooza. We also update budgets, procedure manuals and events for the upcoming season, in addition to performing some small maintenance tasks at the Downhill Ski Area. This past summer we purchased a new bus, researched snowmaking options, developed standup paddle racks for the beach, and we did some other odds and ends around the association.

In our cardio room right now, there are two new cardio machines by Matrix Fitness Equipment. We are in a 30-60 day demo agreement with Matrix to give you a chance to try out these machines. Trout Creek currently has one TechnoGym upright bike and one treadmill up for replacement; after much research and test driving of different brands, Matrix was found to be the brand favorite. The Matrix brand best combines the positives of both our existing Precor equipment and the technology features of our TechnoGym equipment into one machine while moving us forward with some new, advanced technology features including the virtual active feature, which allows you to bike, walk, or run at some amazing locations like Yosemite, the Sierra Nevada, Los Angeles, and Utah to name a few.

Silverado Canyon. There we found remnants of the old Silverado Mine and a road that wound up the canyon that was steep and narrow. We ended the day at J’s on the Corner, a small restaurant in Bridgeport that has a special prime rib dinner on Friday nights. Huge and excellent! On Saturday morning we headed out early for the ghost town of Masonic. Along the way we stopped at several abandoned mine sites and saw beautiful landscapes with fall colors coming to life. We eventually arrived at the town of Bodie. In the late 1880s, Bodie was the wildest town in the west, with over 10,000 residents and $35 million in gold and silver production. Bodie is now a state park and you can stroll around the town’s 40-plus buildings to get a feel for what it must have been like to live there. We ended the day with great food and company at a great restaurant just south of Bridgeport called the Virginia Creek Settlement. On Sunday we headed west. The first road we took was called Summer Creek and it took us up to Upper Summers Meadow. It was quite a climb through switchbacks and some narrow places between trees, but it finally opened up to a big meadow on top of a plateau that offered sweeping views of the beautiful Sierra foothills and peaks, including the Minarets in the distance. After another stop at the Virginia Creek Settlement for pizza, we

Tahoe Donner Men’s Golf Club The 2014 golf season at Tahoe Donner has come to a close. What a fun and memorable season it has been! Our Tahoe Donner Golf Course truly deserves the title “Jewel of the Sierra” this season. Congratulations to Dan Degenhart (gross) and Kevin Murphy (net) for winning the club championship and to Rick Andrs and Tom Lovely for earning the top two finishing spots in the overall TD cup standings. See all the results on our website at tdgolfclub.com. Our membership increased to 211, which is notable given that memberships are shrinking at most golf clubs throughout the state.
overwhelmingly enthusiastic to do these events again next year. Our tournaments had a total of 405 players and we awarded prizes in the form of pro shop credit, totaling over $8,000. Now it’s time to think snow!
Tahoe Donner Hiking Club As the 2014 hiking season comes to a close, we would like to thank the coordinators, hike leaders and potluck hosts for their hard work as well as the hikers for their participation. Over 100 of our 321 lifetime members participated in a Monday short hike, and at least 50 challenged themselves with a Thursday long hike. That’s about half of our membership. Wouldn’t it be great if everyone participated in at least one hike together in 2015? The 2014 season began in early May. In addition to the regular weekly hikes, there was the Skyline-to-the-Sea backpack trip and the Mountain Play in Marin during May; the PCT backpack trip between Bucks Summit and Quincy La Porte Road in July; the Sierra High Camps in Yosemite (four different groups got permits) during July and August; a backpack trip from Tuolumne Meadows to Yosemite Valley in August; and a car camping trip at Highland Lakes with hiking on the PCT south of Ebbetts Pass in September. The club invites you to join and/or get involved. Hike leader meetings will be held in April and we’d love for you to volunteer to lead a hike, a backpack trip or an away trip. In September 2015, we’ll be hiking the Dolomites in Italy (already full) and the Julian Alps in Slovenia (we’re taking signups now; contact Robin Reese at rbtahoe@sbcglobal.net if interested).
The Men’s Invitational Golf Tournament kicked off with a pre-party on Sept. 12 that included a pine cone obstacle course and BBQ.
We played a total of 11 tournaments, plus our weekly skins and team games. Four of our tournaments were qualifying events for NCGA-sponsored tournaments in Monterey. Our 12-man team, under the leadership of Bill Brown and Mike Ginsberg, made it to the playoff after winning the regional regular season play against multiple golf clubs in the greater Sacramento and the Foothills area. We experimented with two socially focused events, along with the ladies’ golf clubs. The first was a Ryder Cup format and the second was a Nine and Dine event. Both events had about 40 folks sign up and the feedback was

TIPS FROM THE PRO: OFF-SEASON CONDITIONING BY ROB WEIZER, HEAD GOLF PRO
It may be wintertime, but you don’t have to live in Arizona or Florida to continue working on your game. Staying active and developing an exercise routine during the off-season is important. While spring, summer and fall are devoted to more of the fundamental parts of your game, the inability to play during the winter is a good time to focus on your conditioning. Developing an off-season training program can make a huge difference in your game, even without hitting any golf balls. Here are some basic exercises to keep you fit and ready for the upcoming golf season. Plank: If you choose to focus on one part of the body, make sure it’s the core. Many people think if you want to get stronger, lifting weights is the most effective way. However, you generate most of your power from your core and not your arms. Especially if you are looking to add distance, doing a basic plank exercise will improve your core strength and stability. Begin in the plank position by using your forearms and toes to keep your torso 6-12 inches off the ground. While keeping your body straight and parallel to the ground, hold this position for 30 seconds. Once you repeat the plank enough, you’ll be able to increase to 45 or 60 seconds and rotate your hips to the left and right, briefly touching the ground. Lunges: Doing a basic lunge with a medicine ball is a great way to improve power. While holding the medicine ball, perform a lunge with your right leg while simultaneously rotating the ball to the left. Repeat with the
other side of your body. By doing this, you will strengthen your quadriceps, develop more flexibility, and be able to stay energized throughout the round. Hip Abductor: For this exercise, you will need either a golf club or a body bar. Set up as if you are addressing the ball with the club placed behind your shoulders. Lift your left heel up as if you are beginning your backswing (do the opposite if you’re a lefty player) while simultaneously rotating your shoulders so the butt of the golf club is facing forward. This will transfer 80-90 percent of your weight to your right foot and force your right hip to rotate. Do three sets of 10 repetitions for both legs. If done correctly, you should see increased flexibility and strength because you are rotating your hips, not sliding them, and giving your shoulders the ability to make a larger backswing and thus developing more power when making your golf swing! Lifts: There are many abdominal exercises that can help your game, but lifts are one of the best. Lay on your stomach with your arms and legs fully extended. Begin by lifting your right arm and left leg about 6 inches off the ground and holding it for 10-15 seconds. Repeat with your left arm and right leg. Make sure you are resting for 20-30 seconds between each repetition. Lifts help with your abdominals, forearms and legs. After a while, you should be able to hold the position for longer. If you keep lifts in your workout, come golf season you should see improvements in your posture and swing technique. You may have noticed none of these exercises require a gym membership or a trainer. Regardless of whether you play competitively or just for fun, by setting aside 20 minutes a couple of days per week these exercises will help improve your conditioning and, with it, your overall enjoyment of the game.
