President’s Message It is with sincere regret I announce that, for personal and family reasons, Suzy Knisley, the association’s current vice president, has submitted her resignation effective at the end of December. Over the last five and a half years, Suzy has served the association more than ably, two terms as president. The accomplishments achieved by the association during those two terms are remarkable and have changed the face of Tahoe Donner; accomplishments such as the implementation of the 2030 General Plan and especially Suzy’s involvement in purchasing the Euer Valley property. Her positive impact on Tahoe Donner is evident and she will be missed. Personally, it has been both a privilege and a pleasure working with Suzy toward the continued betterment of Tahoe Donner. Thank you, Suzy, for your hard work and dedication to keeping Tahoe Donner a first class place to live for all of our families. Even as we wish Suzy the best, we need to fill the open board position created by her resignation. Tahoe Donner homeowners and the board are looking for hard working candidates for this opening who want to step up and be involved in the future of Tahoe Donner. All homeowners in good standing are eligible to run for the board. The board will consider all applicants and hope to make a final decision in December. Included with this issue of Tahoe Donner News, you will find the 2013 Annual Budget
Report. If you haven’t already, you will also soon be receiving an invoice for the 2013 Annual Assessment. To many members, the most important aspect of these two communications is whether the amount of Annual Assessment is going up for 2013. After an exhaustive effort of identifying where costs could be cut, and where revenues other than the assessment could be increased, the short answer to that question is yes. Your board of directors and staff, with the invaluable assistance of the Finance Committee, thoroughly explored everything from efficiencies at the operations to prudent contribution amounts for our Capital Funds in developing the 2013 Budget. Unfortunately, after a budget killing winter and four years of holding the Operating Fund without an increase, we are faced with a need to increase the Annual Assessment. Reduced revenue compared to budget expectations for our downhill ski area and cross country ski center depleted our Operating Contingency Reserves and it needs to be replenished. Additionally, after four years of increasing fixed costs associated with utilities, insurance, and fuel, et cetera, holding the Operating Fund static another year is just not possible. The 2013 Annual Assessment established by the board is $1,505; an increase over 2012 of $130 or 9.5% percent, with $96 going to the Operating Fund and $34 to the Replacement Reserve Fund. In reviewing the financial performance of our private amenities that benefit from the Recreation Fee (Trout Creek Recreation Center, Beach Club Marina, Tennis Center and Northwoods Pool), the

FROM THE GENERAL MANager’s Desk
As we again enter the last month of the year, I thought it would be useful to reflect on Tahoe Donner’s accomplishments for 2012, as we continue to focus on achieving our Strategic Vision: Tahoe Donner is a vibrant and desirable mountain community, with modern recreational facilities, events, programs, and leading customer service, surrounded by accessible and healthy natural resources. Developing a vibrant and desirable mountain community can be a subjective formula; however, our board approved strategic plan, goals, and annual budget process provides for focused initiatives to continue improving this great community. This past year we have concentrated our efforts in four principal areas as identified in our strategic vision; modernize our recreational facilities, improve our events and programs, enhance our customer service, and improve our natural resources. Modern Recreational Facilities Our 2030 General Plan and Reserve Replacement Plan are integral documents to our strategic plan, as they outline a specific strategy to reinvest in our capital infrastructure in order to modernize, improve, and in some cases completely replace our outdated and inadequate facilities. The details of the 2012 capital project achievements can be viewed on page 8 in this month’s magazine. Some of the immediately obvious results include the new wayfinding signs, replacement of the stone wall capping at Trout Creek Recreation Center, an additional bocce ball court, resurfaced tennis courts, new downhill ski lodge carpet and furniture, and new downhill and cross country groomers. Events & Programs Events and programs were again at the forefront throughout the summer and fall. From our first place showing at the Truckee July 4th parade, our massively expanded two-day Waterpalooza event on the driving range, Euer Valley BBQ, and the well-attended Fall Harvest Festival. Additionally, we have our ever-expanding day camp registrants, youth tennis and golf programs, paddle board rentals, mountain bike rentals, and new Wibit water toys at the marina and pool, events and programs are being embraced by our membership in greater and greater numbers every season!

Customer Service In a customer focused economy, customer service is often something you immediately notice. This year we made very deliberate efforts to raise the bar of excellence in customer service. From the post summer season survey, which directly influenced countless areas for infrastructure improvements, to our daily review of customer service comment card feedback, this is an area the entire Tahoe Donner team is committed to. We value your feedback and I would encourage all our members to take a moment and drop us a note, or fill out a customer comment card at any one of the resort facilities you frequent. Good, bad, or indifferent, your feedback is gold and directly drives action in this organization. This summer we reviewed a new record number of customer comment cards – Thank You! Accessible & Healthy Natural Resources Ensuring the association is surrounded by accessible and healthy natural resources continued to be a focus this year, resulting in the final acquisition of the 482 acre Euer Valley. In addition, a series of community meetings were held to develop a comprehensive trails master plan, which focused on quantifying and developing a long-term program for improving the 35 miles of trails within the association’s 7,000 acre boundary, while also connecting to other regional trail networks. Also, Tahoe Donner’s Forestry Department treated over 120 acres of common area for fire safety and planted in excess of 500 new conifers. 2013 Budget As noted in the annual budget report the 2013 annual assessment will increase $130. This is a result of driving fiscal conservatism into operating revenue expectations, which reduced budgeted revenues by $658,000 or $102 per property. This provides an important safeguard against further erosion of operating fund members’ equity balance from a winter as this past year presented. On the outflow side, operating costs are up 2% or $46 per property. These two combine for $146 per property, while the operating fund increase was $96 per property. The $50 reduction was achieved through favorable operating plan changes, with no decreases in service levels. The remaining $34 increase in the annual assessment went entirely to the long-term replacement reserve fund, which address the long-term replacement of over 1,500 capital components across the spectrum of the resort operations. Year-over-year utilization growth percentages across our amenities continue to reflect the value that members, member guest, and the public place in Tahoe Donner. Following 2008, utilization of our resort offerings increased 15%, with the vast majority of that utilization coming from the membership! Striking the right balance between these two revenue sources presents a perennial challenge. I encourage you to spend some time reviewing the enclosed Annual Budget Report and hope that you find it informative. As I write this letter, we are in our third day of snow for the season. Be sure and purchase your season ski passes and be ready for the downhill ski area to open. We were actually able to open the cross country ski center on October 22 with 10 kilometers of trails; the earliest ever! As long as we have snow, we will try to keep operations going. If you haven’t tried a day at the cross country ski center, either cross country skiing or snowshoeing, I encourage you to do so; it is truly a wonderful experience at a wonderful facility. In closing, please allow me to wish you all a very bright holiday season followed by a new year that brings much happiness. Make your reservations early for New Year’s Eve at The Lodge. Chef Lew kicks up a gourmet menu for the occasion, including such specials as surf and turf. I hope to see you there and on the slopes.

A letter of farewell To date, I have had the pleasure and responsibility of serving as your representative on the Tahoe Donner Board of Directors for five and a half years and as your board president twice. It has been a rewarding experience, both because of the part I have been able to play in contributing to ongoing improvements these past few years, and more importantly, the relationships I have established with our excellent staff and fellow board and committee members. It has been a difficult decision to announce my resignation from the board, as it is entirely due to personal reasons, and not anything related to the excellent experience I have enjoyed in working with our staff and fellow board and committee members. When you, the members gave me your vote of confidence in the past two elections, selecting me to represent you on your board of directors, I made a commitment to fulfill the goals I promised in my candidates’ statement. I have enjoyed the reward of seeing them come to completion, or well into the process: to protect our open space and secure the Euer Valley, fiscal responsibility to understand and improve on the budget process; address our aging infrastructure; initiating a training program for members of the board in order to
develop a strong business and marketing program; and supporting the importance of strong leadership this association now requires to administrate an $18 million dollar a year corporation. We are no longer primarily a homeowners association that began in the early years of the 1970’s, the Board of Directors is responsible for overseeing a medium sized corporation, including several businesses and restaurants, and approving the design and construction of new buildings and demolition the of old buildings that no longer meet our needs and/or require more funds to repair, remodel or expand due to the 40+ year old failing original construction. Of the 30 years that I have enjoyed membership in Tahoe Donner Association, these past few years have been the very best and - due to the excellent leadership of our general manager, Robb Etnyre and our current professional staff, without which, none of the improvements that have taken place would been realized. The association is being run more professionally and efficiently today than all the years I can remember since I first bought my parcel in 1981. I want to assure the members that I am leaving the association in excellent hands and that I have every confidence the current Board of Directors, committee members and staff will be serving the members in the very best way possible. I encourage our members to support them in the positive direction Tahoe Donner Association is heading. I would like to point out that we have just recently been named as one of the two top family friendly ski resorts for the entire Tahoe Basin in Family Travel Magazine. It is impossible to mention all of the people I have had the great pleasure to work with, both staff and members, but I want to extend a special thanks to those I have had the privilege to work with closely and whom have contributed much to my experience in Tahoe Donner; Tom Johns, Ron Wulff, Jim Stang, Miguel Sloane, Annie Rosenfeld, Robby McClendon, Forrest Huisman, Bill Houdyschell, Mike Peters, and especially Robb Etnyre, Mike Salmon and Bonnie Watkins. 2012 capital projects and facility imporvements update With recent and future capital investments being made at our amenities and adjacent land acquisitions during 2012, which are funded by a combination of development and reserve replacement funds, we’ve planned for and implemented the following amenity improvements as approved by the board of directors and defined by the Strategic Plan and 2030 General Plan. As a result, we continue receiving support and positive comments regarding these diverse investments, as they’re improving member experiences and overall pride of ownership within our diverse family of homeowners and their guests.
Cell Tower at the top of Eagle Rock Ski Lift Upon successfully fulfilling the necessary contractual agreements required by the Tahoe Donner Board of Directors, American Tower (the general contractor awarded to install the cell tower and acquire interested service providers) is now working with local agencies for necessary construction permits and approvals. Aiming to start construction in 2013, the tower will be modeled as a pine tree and will be strategically located west of Eagle Rock, to include a larger area of improved coverage beyond Skislope Way.

Storage Loft addition in Marina Boat House With increased popularity in programs and equipment rentals at the Beach Club Marina, additional storage needs have been met by adding a storage loft and staircase, increasing operational storage by nearly 70%.
Bocce Court remodel at Northwoods Due to growing popularity and demand for the game of Bocce within the membership and their guests, the Bocce area was remodeled and an additional court was added.
Downhill Ski Area Parking Lot Improvement By adding a new parking lot at the downhill ski area, Tahoe Donner now offers an additional 65 parking stalls available for guest use which is a 33% increase in parking capacity. We now have a total capacity of 260 vehicles spaces on-site, an additional shuttle stop, and on-street overflow parking available during peak season. This enables us to offer our guests additional convenience and services throughout the ski season.

Tennis Facility Remodel and new Quickstart Courts With the objective of removing the underutilized lawn and backboard area for the installation of Quickstart courts, we have successfully implemented a progressive USTA youth learning program at the Tahoe Donner Tennis Center. Additionally, the tennis facility received new exterior paint and many courts received necessary crack repair and resurfacing.
New Amenity Signage and Wayfinding

The new signage is built to withstand snow removal and extreme weather conditions and designed with a combination of wood, steel and aluminum. The signage program was developed to unify one of the largest homeowner associations in the country and have the signage be a reflection of the culture and beliefs of the residents. At a cost of less than $700,000, each amenity and major intersection has been branded with signage that improves visual aesthetics, providing homeowners with increased pride, translating to sustainable property values, while also helping visitors successfully navigate to and from each amenity. spring at locations such as the Alder Creek Campground, Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Center, Beach Club Marina, Alder Creek and Schussing Sub-monuments, and boat storage area.
Snowplay and Driving Range improvements With increased Snowplay visitation and subsequent necessary accessible upgrades, a remodeled ticket kiosk, staircase, ramp, and driving range berming have been completed to improve summer events and winter activities.
Forestry Facility Upon acquiring the new forestry facility, located at the top of Teton Way, remodel efforts are now underway to provide accessible entrances, offices and restrooms, improve utility enclosures, update lighting and insulation, separate vehicle bays from upper storage areas as required, upgrade vehicle bays with necessary storage and support systems, and remove carpet and prepare upper rooms for secure lockable association files and storage.
Storage Barn at The Lodge With increasing homeowner popularity for special events held at The Lodge, equipment and furniture is now properly stored in an onsite and secure location. Upon approval by the board of directors as part of the 2030 General Plan, this storage barn and future storage solutions are designed to facilitate increased aesthetic and service levels to our homeowners and their guests throughout the association.
Dining and Pro Shop Improvements at The Lodge Upon direction from the board of directors and recent approvals from the Truckee Planning Commission, our general contractor and architect are working to start constructing the covered pub deck, new sun deck, pro shop and snack bar expansion, kitchen improvements, and permanent grotto bar through the winter months and into the spring of 2013 as the operation’s schedule allows.

Maintenance Facility Remodel In an effort to reduce construction costs on a new maintenance facility, construction and remodel efforts are underway to update the offices with proper waterproofing, sufficient accessibility, and updated operation’s needs, while also relocating the forestry department, replacing perimeter fencing, and adding a vehicle carport and vehicle storage building.

Alder Creek Nordic Center The beginning phases of facility space needs began during 2011. Management and the General Plan committee reviewed the preliminary space needs and program requirements, and have begun to engage in membership discussion through the board of director lead monthly board meetings. In late 2012 and upon board approval, the architect and general contractor shall commence with additional Town Hall meetings to further develop schematic design and construction cost updates for a project completion date in late 2014.

Beach Club Marina As conceived in the 2030 General Plan and approved by the board of directors, the project and improvements are designed to better accommodate the utilization of the Beach Club Marina by our membership, while also solving disability access concerns for the marina deck and upper lawn picnic area. Expansion of the upper picnic area will involve thinning the existing trees on the upper lawn in keeping with the project design and healthy forest management practices. Upon necessary approvals from the board and Town agencies, expansion of the existing upper picnic area lawn, deck area outside the snack bar and beach is scheduled to start during the spring of 2013.

You may have noticed the new buzz and friendly energy at Tahoe Donner’s Pizza on the Hill restaurant lately. A few changes including hiring Jamie Sedgwick as the manager and changing up the menu are just some of the recent improvements we hope will enhance your dining experience.
Who is the new manager? Jamie Sedgwick grew up in San Jose and started his restaurant career as a dishwasher at pizza/sports bar named Jake’s of Saratoga. Over a ten year time span, Jamie worked every position at the restaurant from the kitchen to the front of the house. While gaining valuable skills in customer service, cooking and managing staff, he eventually rose up the ranks and became the night manager. About six years ago Sedgwick moved to Truckee and branched out and learned to provide resort-style service as well as fine dining expertise. He worked as the assistant manager of TC’s Pub at the Village at Northstar, California, managed the bar at Gold Coast Lodge in Squaw Valley, USA and has been the floor supervisor and bartender at The Lodge Restaurant & Pub for the past four years. “Living in beautiful Truckee and working for a great company like Tahoe Donner is a dream come true,” said Sedgwick. “I plan on staying here for a long time and will strive to make Pizza on the Hill the best pizza restaurant in town!”
As a father of a seven-year-old daughter, Sedgwick has a close connection with family-oriented dining. Coupled with over a decade of pizza restaurant skills under his belt, hiring Sedgwick to run Pizza on the Hill was a natural fit. But I am sure most of you are interested in the long answer… You may or may not be aware of the recent management change at the cross country ski center. JoJo Toeppner has moved on from our center to another opportunity. We thank JoJo for her many years of service to Tahoe Donner and wish her the best of luck. We do intend to fill JoJo’s role very soon, but our primary concern is to find the right individual who will be able to execute and further evolve our vision of the cross country ski center in the years to come. With fall flying by we have been busy with preparations for the upcoming season. Following you will find an few of the goals and programs that we will be focusing on as we head into 2013.

Grooming Critical to the Nordic experience is the quality of surface on which to ski. We are committed to refocus energy and resources to ensure the best available surface on the largest amount of trail as possible. This means a grooming plan that is consistent for the significant categories of conditions so users know what to expect on any given day. Integral to this effort is resources, and Tahoe Donner is clearly ready to commit the necessary resources to provide the best possible surface for our customers. The Ginzu groomer and roller we procured this fall has already reaped dividends with a week of groomed trail for our season pass holders in October on 16 inches of snow. When we do finally receive

Sally Jones brings passion and experience to Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Center Sally Jones comes to Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Center from her most recent position as Nordic Program Director for Auburn Ski Club Associates. Sally is a PSIA Level 3 instructor in cross country and downhill skiing and is a current board member of the Far West Nordic Ski Association. Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Outdoor Recreation from Bedford College in England. At Auburn Ski Club, Sally was responsible for all aspects of Nordic programs and events including visioning, budgeting, fundraising, and implementing programs and events. Uniquely, this is not Sally’s first time as a Tahoe Donner Cross County Center employee. She worked as the Ski School Director from 1991-1995 where she was responsible for employing, training and managing instructors as well as coordinating lessons and clinics. Sally looks forward to the season ahead and is excited to elevate the Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Center to the highest standards of service and offer an excellent ski experience.

the traditional huge Sierra snow storm, we will be grooming trails with our brand new Pisten Bully Nordic 400 groomer. This machine is the latest and greatest equipment for creating a ski surface and includes a completely integrated, factory built track setting system that is not an aftermarket add-on. Of course the machine alone does not guarantee a perfect surface, therefore we will be instituting a feedback system so our operators can continually improve their technique in changeable conditions in an effort for maximum consistency.
Programs We are extremely excited to develop several new program opportunities. Concepts that we are working on include more skill specific clinics, free introductory clinics, expanded youth ski team programs, improved support of our local middle school and high school teams, and expanded night skiing to name a few. Of course to develop and introduce these program will take time and resources so we will be hiring a Ski School Director who will not only oversee the development and execution of these concepts, but will also bring their own concepts to the table.

2013 is quickly approaching and likely you are beginning to think about your goals for the coming New Year! Well, Trout Creek Recreation Center wants to be a part of helping our members reach those goals. In 2013 we will be offering some exciting new programs and incentives to keep you active, healthy, and on track to make 2013 your best year ever. Join us this year and together we can make it happen!

Some of us tell ourselves every year… “this will be the year that I achieve my healthy weight”. Well, together let’s make 2013 that year! The 2013 Trout Creek Weight Loss Challenge will be a FREE opportunity for you to join others in a friendly competition to reach your weight loss goals. The program will begin February 1, 2013 and last for 12 weeks. If you are interested in participating we will have a kick-off, sign-up, weigh-in, and before picture party on Wednesday, January 30, at 5:30 p.m. We will have a guest lecture on the 12-Steps of Weight Loss Success and introduce participants to the many opportunities that Trout Creek Recreation Center has to contribute to your success. Events The event calendar has always been filled with special events and activities, and these will continue, however, we will take advantage of new and exciting events as they present themselves. New this season will be our participation in Winter Trails Day. Winter Trails Day is a national event designed to introduce people to winter trail activities such as snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Center will be teaming up with REI on January 12 to host a day of demos, clinics, educational outreach, music, food and fun. This activity is anticipated to introduce 200–300+ new participants to our winter sports. The event will begin at 11 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. and all demos and clinics during this time are free – some will even be taught by members of the Victorian Junior Cross Country Ski Team from Australia. In addition, trail passes for the day will be sold for the optional donation of $5 with all proceeds benefitting the high school and middle school cross country ski teams. Be sure to put this event on your calendar as it will be an absolute blast.

“The passion for our winter trails is what we want to share with you this winter.” Another major event for this season will be the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association 2013 SuperTour Finals and Distance National Championships, scheduled for April 2 – 11, 2013. Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Center is proud to be working with Far West Nordic to bring this event to our region, and we will be hosting five of the six races, including the National Finals for the 30k/50k. Be sure to come out and check out the top national and potentially international skiers compete on the same trails you skied all season. More details for this event will be posted on the website as soon as they become available.
With several returning staff members, and a few new ones, you can count on the same great food and excellent service from the cross country ski center staff. The passion for our winter trails is what we want to share with you this winter, so please be sure to schedule a trip or two to the Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Center to spend the day in the fresh air with amazing scenery. winter is for everyone The Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Area has long been known as “The Best Place to Begin.” This winter, we’re actively taking steps to include a few new people in the fun. Tahoe Donner will be offering lessons specifically tailored to students with cognitive disabilities. There are more and more students in these adaptive ski lessons throughout the nation every year. Through a partnership with PSIA-W, the Professional Ski Instructors of America, Western Division, we are providing specialized training to six of our best instructors in teaching adaptive ski lessons. This way, we will be providing the most current teaching methods to our adaptive students. Utilizing special training and equipment, we can more effectively teach students diagnosed with autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Down syndrome, developmental delays, critical illnesses, and many other situations. The training will be provided by a clinician from the PSIA-W Adaptive Committee who specializes in these unique, but very important lessons. Both on-snow and indoor training will be provided to give our instructors a wide knowledge base to better meet the needs of our guests at the resort. The main topics of the training will include: • • • • • •
Modifying lessons and teaching styles for students with cognitive disabilities Practicing assists for your students Studying various types of cognitive disabilities Assessing your student’s abilities Example lessons on the snow Safety in the lessons
At the Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Center, we also cater to adaptive students. We have two Nordic Sit-Skis which allow us to offer adaptive lessons in Nordic skiing to some physically disabled students. These special skis allow someone who cannot stand on traditional cross country skis to get out and enjoy the trails we have at our resort. While some adaptive students stay near the lodge, we’ve had others get all the way out into the Euer Valley. Private lessons are available at both the downhill and cross country ski areas for disabled students. The instructor will work one-on-one with their student, occasionally using a second instructor to assist if needed. As an early reminder, Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal Company will pick up Christmas trees in front of your house on January 15, 2013. All trees and branches must be cut into pieces that are a maximum of three-feet long and all ornaments, lights, stands, garland, tinsel, flocking, and other material must be removed. If you miss that date, put the tree in your back yard and in the spring take advantage of the Forestry Department’s Chipping Program. Trees will not be picked up from the corner of Slalom Way and Northwoods Boulevard. If you have any questions about the program, please call the Forestry Department at (530)587-9432. If you are doing exterior insurance work on your home due to winter damage from last season, please call our office and give us a description of the work to be done. Oftentimes the work is “like-for-like” and a quick call can help us update your file with these notes. If the work changes the exterior with material or color changes, please contact our office to see if a permit is required from Tahoe Donner. Remind your contractor that all new exterior work requires permits from both Tahoe Donner and the Town of Truckee.
