By now, we have elected a new board for 2013/2014. I am sure this new board will be able to carry on the outstanding achievements of the last four or five years, which was one of the busiest and most productive periods in our 40-year history. More on that in a moment. I especially want to thank this year’s outgoing board members for the great contributions they made to the association during their tenure on the board; Suzy Knisley, Jay Lempinen, and Ron Wulff, one of our longest serving board members. Their service, foresight, and dedication to the improvement of Tahoe Donner cannot be questioned. They implemented numerous new programs, approved the 2030 General Plan and began the much-needed process of replacing our 40-year old infrastructure. They did an outstanding job! If you were unable to our attend our 2013 annual membership meeting, where I outlined all the accomplishments of the past few years, allow me to be a little redundant and go over those accomplishments briefly. Adoption of the 2030 General Plan

This is an invaluable long-range plan that outlines our way forward as we modernize our outdated and inadequate facilities and infrastructure in order to meet current and future needs of our membership. Buchman – Sinclair land purchase

Through a unique partnership between the Town of Truckee, Tahoe Donner Association and the Truckee Donner Land Trust, we were successful in protecting this 240-acre greenbelt with its scenic qualities and potential connectivity to the Donner Lake Rim Trail. McGlashan Springs land purchase

This 160-acre parcel of land located on the southern side of Tahoe Donner will greatly benefit members both in providing for recreational purposes, such as allowing for the expansion of the existing 35 miles of recreational trails throughout Tahoe Donner,

and for further protection to homes from the threat of wildfires. Euer Valley purchase

Surely a crowning achievement for our association was the purchase of the Euer Valley 482 acres. This spectacular land adjacent to Tahoe Donner will now be permanently available for many generations of our homeowners for our unique recreational four-season enjoyment. Amenity and wayfinding signage

New signage has been installed at each amenity and major intersection in Tahoe Donner. The new signage was designed with a combination of wood, steel, and aluminum built to withstand snow removal and extreme weather conditions here in the mountains. In addition to the practical use of the signs to successfully navigate to and from each amenity, they also greatly improve the visual aesthetics. Snowplay/driving range improvements

The main impetus behind this project was to improve the extremely popular Snowplay operation which generates a considerable amount of revenue. A gradual berm was created in some areas that allowed for superior Snowplay operations during periods of low moisture. Our professional golf course designer, Cary Bickler, designed the berm, which resulted in a more visually stimulating and better functioning driving range. New forestry facility

Tahoe Donner now owns a 20-acre parcel on the fringe of Tahoe Donner property which contains a large building that houses the needs and operational requirements of the forestry department. Plan on attending the Fourth of July Independence Day parade in your own hometown of Truckee! Full-time, part-time, or guest residency, it does not matter, for you can’t help but enjoy an authentic small town American parade where local bands, floats, sports teams, service organizations and businesses alike all gather with spectators along a two-mile parade route ending in downtown Truckee, followed by an amazing evening fireworks display over Donner Lake. Of course, there are other great events to participate in during the month of July; themed Saturday night BBQs at the Equestrian Center, outdoor movie nights, junior golf school, swim lessons, Water Kids Club, day camps, stand-up paddleboarding, hiking one of the new trails, and our expanded Summer Concert event on Saturday, July 27 with Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers, the Buddy Emmer Blues Band, and Jelly Bread. The list goes on and on. Don’t forget to check your Summer Fun Guide to maximize your fun while at your personal resort. Misplaced your Summer Fun Guide? You can always find an electronic copy and more event details online or pick up a new copy at the member services office in the Northwoods Clubhouse. Also, look for our weekly activity guide, available at the counter of each amenity for timely week-to-week special offerings, or go online to view our daily/ weekly/monthly summer calendar of activities at tahoedonner.com. Does the term “stored value” mean anything to you while you’re at Tahoe Donner? Did you know you can put money on your Tahoe Donner membership ID cards? You no longer have to carry money or your credit card with you when you visit Tahoe Donner’s amenities. Called stored value, it’s very easy to put value (money) on your card. You can come into the member services office with cash or a credit or debit card and our staff can put the money on your card for you. To redeem your stored value, simply tell the staff member that you have stored value on your member or guest ID card. Your receipt will display the balance left on the ID card. Remember to always take your ID card with you to use stored value at the amenities. This will be the third summer of this program and it continues to receive rave reviews and participation. So, don’t worry about carrying your wallet — stored value and your membership ID or guest card is all you need this summer at your personal resort. Membership ID cards are used within Tahoe Donner and each property is entitled to as many as four member ID cards for qualified individuals. Each property may purchase up to four additional member ID cards for qualifying family members. Your member ID card identifies you as a member and affords you access to the private and public

amenities at the member rate, where applicable. Each property is also entitled to a maximum of two transferable guest cards for use by property owner’s guests to gain access to the private amenities, where guest access fees will apply. Up to four guests may gain access on a single transferable guest card. Upon payment of the annual recreation fee, a member and any other eligible members associated with that membership are granted access to the Beach Club Marina, Northwoods Pool, Trout Creek Recreation Center and the Tennis Center without having to pay the daily entrance fee. The 2013-2014 recreation fee remains at $225 and is valid from May 1, 2013 through April 30, 2014; it can be purchased at the member services office at Northwoods Clubhouse. If you have elected not to purchase the recreation fee, then daily entrance fees will apply to your amenity visits. The entrance fee for the private amenities, including Trout Creek Recreation Center, the Tennis Center and the Beach Club Marina, is $6 for members and $8 for guests. This fee provides access to all these amenities for the entire day. The entrance fee for Northwoods Pool is $4 for members and $6 for guests. August will quickly follow July, and will include many more opportunities to get out and play at Tahoe Donner. We will host our second Waterpalooza on August 10 and 11, plus plenty of other camp and class offerings to round out your summer. I hope to see you all around the amenities and at our special programs this summer. Don’t forget to take time to enjoy a round of golf at your own championship course along with the other great local Truckee attractions, like our small town Truckee Thursdays in downtown Truckee – now with a free shuttle from Tahoe Donner and back!

Truckee Thursdays has begun and Tahoe Donner is providing a free shuttle service to and from the event. Downtown Truckee Thursdays is a great community event with live music, great art, Foothills Farmers Market, children’s activities, a beer garden and a variety of vendors. The event takes place in Downtown Truckee for 11 weeks starting June 13 until August 29 from 5 to 9 p.m. The complimentary shuttle will leave from Trout Creek Recreation Center starting at 4 p.m. and will run every half hour, with the last shuttle departing Trout Creek at 9 p.m. Shuttles from downtown returning to Trout Creek will begin at 4:15 p.m. and will run every half hour, until 9:15 p.m. We will adhere to this schedule as best as possible, unforeseen traffic issues may cause delays.

TOP 5 THINGS TO DO THIS FOURTH OF JULY Truckee boasts hometown pride during the Fourth of July week. From the popular Truckee parade to firework celebrations around Lake Tahoe, the Fourth of July is the best time of year to be here!

1. Catch a parade

Truckee Fourth of July parade: Begins at 10 a.m. at the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District parking lot at the West end of town, and progresses one and a half miles down Donner Pass Road into historic Truckee, ending around noon. Be sure to cheer on the Tahoe Donner float as it passes by! Fourth of July Boat Parade: West Shore of Lake Tahoe, 12 p.m. Join the parade of Tahoe Maritime Museum members’ boats, led by boats from the museum’s collection, leaving Commons Beach at noon on a cruise down Tahoe’s West Shore to Obexer’s Marina, in Homewood.

2. Watch the fireworks

Truckee/Donner Lake West End Beach Fireworks: The Truckee Fourth of July Fireworks is scheduled for dusk on July 4 at West End Beach at Donner Lake. Tickets are $6 per person (in advance only) available through the Truckee Donner Recreation and Park District. You must be a Truckee resident or attend with friends. 3. Take in some music

Our first Music on the Porch at the Lodge Restaurant & Pub starts Wednesday, July 3. Every Wednesday through August 28 a different artist will play music from 6 to 9 p.m. on the porch.

4. Get out on the water!

The perfect summer day is calling — come to the Tahoe Donner Beach Club Marina to explore Donner Lake from the water. Whether on a stand-up paddleboard, on a windsurfer, in a kayak, or simply swimming, a Fourth of July weekend simply isn’t complete without a dip in the lake. 5. Go for a run

Auburn Ski Club Firecracker Mile: Run begins at 9:45 a.m. just before the 4th of July parade along Donner Pass Road from US Bank to the train station in old town. As the temperature warms and the kids become more excited, it could mean only one thing: school is over and summer vacation is here! The idea of spending two or more weeks in Tahoe Donner is enough to fill anyone with eager anticipation for all the fun and adventure that lies ahead as you find yourself daydreaming of the mornings playing tennis, warm afternoons lying on the beach at the Beach Club Marina and relaxing evenings sipping your favorite beverage on the new deck at the Lodge Restaurant & Pub. Suddenly reality sets in, and you think, “What are the kids going to do this entire time?” We have the answer: Tahoe Donner Day Camps! Over the last 20 years, Tahoe Donner has developed a rich, fun and safe education-based day camp environment for all members and guests ages 4 to 14. Kids thrive in a worry-free setting, specifically tailored for them. The camp program is split into six age groups, each participating in different age-appropriate activities. For example, the three- and fouryear-old program, known as High Mountain Kids, focuses on creative play with nature education and art and crafts. As the campers mature, so do the activities within their specific camps. Mountain biking, river rafting, ropes courses, and paddleboarding are all on the list of activities to look forward to as the kids get older. Every Wednesday, family members and friends within different camps have the opportunity to see each other as all camps congregate at the Tahoe Donner Beach Club Marina for the weekly Day Camp Beach Barbecue. Tie-dye, paddle boats, and the barbecue lunch are highlights of this fantastic day. New for the summer of 2013, the Tahoe Donner Day Camp program is introducing a program for the 13- and 14-year-olds called Campers in Leadership Training. This program was developed for kids who love the camp setting and the activities that come with it, and who may also want to become camp counselors one day. With a focus on leadership development, participants will learn the importance of teamwork, different roles within a group, and positive and negative leadership styles. The USGA is hosting the 2013 US Junior Amateur Championship from July 22 - 27, and as a club, we have had many members volunteer a few of their days to help make this world-class event run smoothly. This is a great opportunity to help out our local community, and show our club some exposure as well. Tahoe Donner is also participating once again in the NCGA 12 Man Team Competition. Captained by Mike Ginsberg and Bill Brown, this team plays every other Thursday against three opponents. This year our opponents are Turkey Creek, Whitney Oaks, and the Ridge. This is a very significant event in northern California and we anticipate a deep run into the playoffs. Go team! The men’s club is very excited about the upcoming golf season at Tahoe Donner. The golf course is in great shape for this early in the year and we have a fun tournament schedule planned. Some of our marquee events for the season are the club championship and our invitational; also, we plan to rejuvenate our Memorial Tournament. This

here is nothing better than relaxing on the grass on a summer’s afternoon and watching some great live music. Set amongst the tall pines, Tahoe Donner’s driving range provides a beautiful setting for a perfect outdoor summer concert. The 2013 Concert on the Green takes place on Saturday, July 27. Bring the entire family along to enjoy an outdoor picnic and take in the sounds of the summer. In the last two years, Tahoe Donner has hosted fantastic artist performances at our Summer Concert on the Green. Blues legend Robert Cray performed here in 2011 and newgrass pioneer Sam Bush thrilled the audience last year with his inimitable style. This year at Tahoe Donner’s summer concert there will be three great bands gracing the outdoor stage. The headline act for the show is Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers. There is one designated smoking area. Pets, Frisbees and professional photo or video recording equipment are not allowed at the venue.

Ticketing: Will-call and the box office are located at the concert entrance, at the edge of the driving range parking area. Please take your ticket to the venue entrance located next to the box office. You will need to present the ticket to receive a wristband to enter the venue. Once you receive your wristband, you may enter and exit as you please. You will need to present your wristband for re-entry.

Children: There are no age restrictions on who can attend this show. Parents are advised to supervise their children at all times. Event staff may remove any person from the concert venue for any reason. Guests are asked to consider the experience of others at the show. Every person attending the show must have a ticket. A limited number of spots are available for our Kid’s Night Out event for children ages 4 to 11.

Refunds: No refunds are available for this performance. We will do our best to ensure that the performance will occur, but inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances may warrant cancellation of the event. Because of the costs associated with even a cancelled event, refunds will not be offered.

Seating: Low-back chairs are welcome at this venue, as are blankets. In some areas closer to the stage, we may ask that guests pack up these items at show time. Please consider your neighbor’s ability to easily see the show. Zydeco originated in Southern Louisiana, near the band’s hometown, and blends Cajun sounds with the blues and rhythm and blues styles. The band features a washboard player, a saxophonist, two guitarists, a drummer and of course the accordionist and lead singer Dwayne (Dopsie) Rubin. Dwayne is a gifted player who has been voted “America’s Hottest Accordionist,” beating 3,000 contestants from around the country. He has played the accordion since the age of 7. “This is my calling — zydeco music is in my blood and it is my heart and soul,” Dopsie says. His brand of accordion playing merges delta blues and rock, with a healthy infusion of zydeco. The zydeco musical style came about from a blending of different genres in the early twentieth century, although its roots go deeper than that and date back to the Creole influences of the early Louisiana settlers. It has a unique sound combining many early dance music styles such as the two-step, waltz and shuffle, with blues, rhythm and blues and jazz. With a fast tempo that is dominated by the accordion and rub-board (frottoir), the zydeco sound is infectious. Becoming ever more popular over the last fifty years, zydeco now has its own separate category in the Grammy awards. Among the names synonymous with the genre are Queen Ida, Rockin’ Sidney and Clifton Chenier, an early pioneer of the style, known as “the king of zydeco.” Dwayne Dopsie’s father, Rockin’ Dopsie, was also a popular zydeco performer. During the 1980s he recorded songs with mainstream

Tahoe Donner WELCOMES SEAN CONNELLY AS NEW TRAILS MANAGER

The Tahoe Donner trail system is an expansive 40-mile system comprised of single-track and multi-use fire roads which take you through high alpine meadows and aspen groves, over craggy ridge tops, and to breathtaking vistas of Castle Peak, Donner Lake and the Sierra Crest ridgeline. Join us this summer to explore your back yard, refresh in the serenity of the mountains and be inspired by the natural surroundings of Tahoe Donner.

Euer Valley Shuttle Days

This spring marked the completion of the Trails master plan validation project. Two of the recommendations in the plan centered on human resource needs, including volunteer involvement and development and operational focus by hiring a Trails Manager. The new manager will lead the maintenance, development and sustainment of the summer trail system while assisting in summer maintenance efforts on the cross country and downhill ski area trails. After spring recruiting efforts, Tahoe Donner has hired Sean Connelly as the trail manager. Sean Connelly originally hails from upstate New York where his passion for the outdoors was fostered during summer trail volunteer work with Americorp. He migrated west to Montana where he finished his schooling at University of Montana, Missoula in Recreation Resource Management. His studies included conservation of wildlands, rivers and parks, ecology, and recreation administration. Sean continued his summer trail construction work throughout college with the Montana Conservation Corps and subsequently with the United States Forest Service (USFS) in the Tongass National Forest. Sean moved on to greener pastures when he discovered a trails and recreation mecca in Bend, Ore. Sean has dedicated the past six years to the USFS Deschutes National Forest working on trail design and construction. As

his supervisor stated, Sean played an integral part in the trails that forest holds. This trail system maintenance and new construction is largely supported by volunteer efforts which have at least 800 willing volunteers who are led by USFS trail leaders like Sean. For the last three years, Sean led a high profile trail and river access project on the Metolius River, where the focus was on access retention and river bank restoration. As if his work on the Bend USFS trails was not enough during the week, he also worked and collaborated with the Central Oregon Trails Alliance on trail construction and maintenance efforts to benefit the community and large user groups which includes equestrian riders, hikers, bikers, and OHV users. We are excited to have Sean on board. Look for Sean on the trail; he is always smiling and happy to talk about the great outdoors and the Tahoe Donner trail system. For those who are unable to hike, bike, or horseback ride into Euer Valley, but would still like to see this beautiful property, Tahoe Donner Association will be offering a shuttle service into the valley on select weekends during the summer. On these dates, the shuttle is scheduled to leave from the Equestrian Center on the top of every hour from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will leave the valley floor at the bottom of every hour from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Hop on the bus for the ride down at 11 a.m., hike around the valley for a few hours, then catch a ride back up. Congratulations on a successful Truckee Day in Tahoe Donner! Thank you to all who participated, especially SnowTech! Statistics are not yet available but will be updated soon. Since this is the beginning of the building season, the Architectural Standards Office would like to take this opportunity to remind our members and contractors of some of the requirements for building in Tahoe Donner. • Construction start and stop times: Please don’t start too early or work too late. Construction hours are limited to 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. The upcoming holidays, recognized by this provision, are Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day (September 2), Thanksgiving (November 28), and Christmas (December 25). • Do not park on other people’s property or block the street. • Deliveries should be made only to the property under construction. • Be considerate of neighbors and reduce loud noises as much as possible. • Always keep your dog(s) on leashes or at home. • Please play your music at a reasonable level, not loud enough to be heard over the noise of tools. • Keep construction sites tidy.

• Keep all materials and scrap stored neatly on your property. • Make sure the required sanitary facilities are on site prior to construction and that your employees use them. If you have concerns about a construction site, please address it directly to the contractor or the owner causing the problem. Most are more than happy to take care of any problems quickly and simply. If your concern is not resolved with this approach, please report concerns to the proper authorities. Loose dogs should be reported to the Town of Truckee animal control department at 530-582-7830. All other issues such as garbage, litter, loud radios, and more should be referred to the Architectural Standards Office compliance officer at 530-587-9406. If the issue is something we cannot address, we will direct you to the appropriate agency. Instead of a brand new maintenance facility, the board of directors supported a comprehensive remodel of this operation that included the following: • Forestry building removal for additional parking stalls • New vehicle storage building (2,400 sq. ft.) • Maintenance building remodel (5,800 square ft.) • Vehicle carport (1,500 square ft.) • Maintenance yard and drainage improvements The Lodge expansion improvements

• The old deck of The Lodge Restaurant & Pub is now an enclosed porch equipped with operable windows and a fireplace for comfortable year-round dining. A new 1,200 square-foot sundeck was added along the perimeter of the enclosed porch, which includes a relocated stairway for improved access. • The golf pro shop was expanded by 500 square feet, offering a new layout and much needed office, storage, and staff work space. • The Lodge kitchen was remodeled to include new equipment and food preparation areas for expanded menu offerings.

Beach Club Marina project

An expansion of the existing upper picnic lawn, deck area and beach is planned for this amenity. These improvements are designed to better accommodate the utilization of the Beach Club Marina by our membership, while also solving disability access concerns for the deck and upper lawn picnic area. Tennis Center improvements

The lawn and backboard area were removed for the installation of Quickstart courts, and we have successfully implemented a progressive USTA youth learning program. The tennis facility also received new exterior paint and many courts received necessary crack repair and resurfacing. Additionally, there are many projects in the implementation or planning phase, which include: • The completion of a new cross country ski center in 2014 • Organizing a new equestrian center • Constructing a class one trail from Tahoe

Donner to Downtown Truckee • The Lodge grotto improvements and bar installation • Adoption of a land use plan • The expansion of Trout Creek Recreation Center • Plans for the restoration and protection of Euer Valley • The replacement of the 40-year-old downhill ski area building • Finalization of the next five years of the 2030 General Plan I thought I was retired, and that golfing, hiking, fishing, skiing, and spending more time with the grandchildren was in the offing. I hope this illustrates to you that the last four or five years have been one of the most active and important periods in Tahoe Donner history. My fellow board members and I pledge to you to do our best to keep this progress going for the next four or five years. Thank you for your continued support.
