RON WULFF | PRESIDENT Summer has finally arrived and our summer amenities are in full swing. If you did not choose to pay the amenity access fee, you should consider loading your Tahoe Donner Member ID Card with Stored Value. It is like a prepaid debit card. You load your Member ID Card with whatever amount you want; then you don’t need to have the cash with you for admittance to the amenities. We now have a new board with two new directors and will shortly announce the officers of the board. It has been a great year to serve as president with all we have accomplished, especially the acquisition of two large parcels of undeveloped land that can be used for recreation. We continue to work on the contract for the cell tower at Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Area, but it looks like it will take more than a year to obtain permits and complete construction. The independent cell tower company will be in charge of obtaining permits and construction. It is not yet known which wireless providers will purchase tower usage. The committees that assist the board are always looking for volunteers to fill their ranks. If you have a little time and would like to get involved with Tahoe Donner, these are the places to start. Participation can be

via teleconference, so you don’t have to live full-time in Tahoe Donner. We are looking for your ideas and especially inolvement from younger families with children. Remember, it is your association, so get involved. If you haven’t read the General Plan, please go to tahoedonner.com/generalplan. html and take a look at what the plan has projected for Tahoe Donner over the next 20 years. The first five years of the plan has been approved by the board and the remaining 15 years were conditionally approved. The General Plan is based on the demographic survey that was compiled in 2009 along with the Town Hall meetings that were held and suggestions that were sent to the General Plan Committee. The board realizes that we can not rely on dated information and has decided to update the demographic survey every two or three years to see if the priorities of the membership has changed or will change during the implementation of the 2030 General Plan. This will assist future boards as they continue down the path of the plan. We have a test bike rental program called Tahoe Donner Bikeworks that started at the Beach Club Marina. Canoes, biking, kayaks, paddle boards and more are also available at the marina for you to try. (see pg. 24) The Golf Course and Tennis Center are open and in full swing, so enjoy your summer and everything that is available to you here at Tahoe Donner. If you have any questions or ideas for Tahoe Donner, you can contact me at rwulff@sbcglobal.net. You can also give me a call at (530) 587-8720. The entire board can be contacted by emailing board@tahoedonner.com. Contact Info: Telephone: (530) 587-8720 Email: rwulff@sbcglobal.net

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER’S DESK

BULLETIN BOARD

Congratulations on a successful Truckee Day in Tahoe Donner in spite of the threatening weather. About 130 folks turned out in Tahoe Donner and collected tons of trash from the streets. Throughout Truckee, 757 volunteers collected 9.71 tons of trash. All participants enjoyed the event (and 725 enjoyed the free BBQ) at the Regional Park! Since this is the beginning of the building season, I would like to take this opportunity to remind our members and contractors of some of the requirements for building in Tahoe Donner.

ROBB ETNYRE | GENERAL MANAGER Happy Birthday America! July is shaping up to be a fun-filled month as we celebrate our independence and shift into the second of our two seasons this year – from winter to summer. Your schedule of events for the summer must be well planned out by now and by the looks of the reservation system for camps and classes across the association, you’re planning to spend a lot of your time at Tahoe Donner. We are excited about that, particularly with all the new and enhanced programs and services available. You will find new paddleboards and a bike rental program at the Beach Club Marina, new menu selections at Pizza on the Hill, newly resurfaced and refurbished tennis courts, great Equestrian Center programs, expanded fitness classes, and a new “Stored Value Program” allowing you to load value on your Tahoe Donner Member and Guest ID Cards, just to name a few things. Several more projects are underway to enhance the overall Tahoe Donner community and customer experience. First, we will hold a series of community meetings to discuss our multi-user trail system in an effort to develop a comprehensive “Trails Master Plan.” This will include a detailed review of the existing trail network, utilization, maintenance and accessibility in order to focus future efforts to build out our trail system to best meet the needs of our membership. Secondly, we will continue to develop our detailed plans to address the 2011-12 projects identified in the 2030 General Plan. Review this summer will mostly include options to locate the Forestry facility outside the Tahoe Donner subdivision, increasing service to The Lodge by installing a permanent bar in The Grotto, and developing a plan to expand and cover a portion of The Lodge deck in order to meet increased customer utilization of that facility. August will quickly follow July, which includes plenty more opportunities to get out and play at Tahoe Donner. The Robert Cray Band will perform on Saturday evening, August 13, 2011, at the Tahoe Donner Driving Range. We will host our famous Cardboard Regatta on August 20, plus plenty of other camp and class opportunities to round out your summer. I hope to see you all around the amenities and special programs this summer. Don’t forget to take time to enjoy the other great local Truckee attractions like our small town Fourth of July Parade and Truckee Thursdays in downtown Truckee.

• Construction start and stop times: Please don’t start too early or work too late. Remember that the rules were changed three years ago regarding start and stop times. Construction hours are limited to 7 a.m. - 7 p.m., Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. - 7 p.m., Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. The upcoming holidays, recognized by this provision, are the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. • Do not park on other people’s property or block the street • Deliveries should be made only to the property under construction • Be considerate of neighbors and reduce loud noises as much as possible • Always keep your dog(s) on leashes or at home • Please play your music at a reasonable level, not loud enough to be heard over the noise of your tools • Keep your construction site tidy • Keep all materials and scrap stored neatly on your property • Make sure the required sanitary facilities are on site prior to construction and that your employees use them If you have concerns about a construction site, please address it directly with the contractor or the owner causing the problem. Most are more than happy to take care of any problems quickly and simply. If your concern is not resolved with this approach, please report concerns to the proper authorities. Loose dogs should be reported to the Town of Truckee Animal Control Department at (530) 582-7830. EQUESTRIAN CENTER – GIDDY UP! The Equestrian Center staff wishes you all a safe and happy Fourth of July holiday! We will celebrate the weekend with a family BBQ on Saturday, July 2. This year’s BBQ is bigger and better than ever! During the evening you can enjoy a 15 minute wagon ride, decorate a bandana or make a western ornament at the arts and crafts table, play a game of horseshoes or try your hand at the roping station. (Sorry, hog-tying family members is not allowed.) This year we have also added a dress-up station. Bring your cameras and get fun pictures of the family in old west or medieval costumes. We hope the activities will help you work up an appetite for our fantastic BBQ dinner. This year’s options include flame-grilled hamburgers and hot dogs with lots of tasty toppings at our burger bar, along with baked beans, salads, apple pie and of course plenty of s’mores. After dinner the kids get a swing at the piñata and we finish off

the evening with a kids treasure hunt and family water balloon toss. Join us from 5 – 7:30 p.m. July and August are great months for trail riding. You can explore our wonderful network of trails from a whole new perspective - on the back of a horse. You can catch glimpses of the local wildlife, admire the wild flowers in the high mountain meadows and view some incredible vistas. We also offer riding lessons for those who would like to hone their equestrian skills, and pony rides are available for children ages 6 and under. We love visitors and encourage them to stop by during normal operating hours. The facility closes at 6 p.m. and only employees or boarders are allowed on-site after that. Please respect the horses’ need for “quiet time.” Just like us, they enjoy and require time to rest and relax! We all know that the horses love treats like carrots and apples, but please never feed a horse without supervision from an employee. Improper feeding can result in a sick horse or a badly bitten finger or hand; always ask before feeding treats. Proper clothing and footwear will help make your visit to the Equestrian Center more enjoyable. All visitors should wear long pants and close-toed shoes. Helmets are recommended for all riders and required for anyone under the age of 18 and are available free of charge. All visitors please check in at the office before going out to see the horses. The Equestrian Center is open Thursday - Monday for trail rides, pony rides and lessons. First ride of the day leaves at 9 a.m. Reservations are required. Call (530) 587-9470 for more information or reservations.

BLAZING NEW TRAILS Developing our Tahoe Donner Trail System

10

D

uring the last 35 years, over 150 fires have burned within a two-mile radius of Tahoe Donner. In 1960, the Donner Ridge Fire burned 44,800 acres including 3,200 acres within the western half of Tahoe Donner. For this reason, the Forestry Department at Tahoe Donner has been working hard, setting aim on a communitywide fire safe environment. To do this, the forestry team has aggressively been examining every lot and common area within Tahoe Donner, working with you, the homeowners, in order to establish a baseline standard for fire safety. So far, as demonstrated in the 2007 Negro Canyon Fire, the forestry team’s efforts for creating a more fire safe community are paying dividends in the form of fire breaks and open space. Tahoe Donner is also working to acquire and manage more land surrounding current borders. In 2010, 240 acres were purchased and half way through 2011 brings on another 160 acres of recently acquired open space. Once the objective described above is complete, slated for 2012, the Forestry Department is planning to shift focus, developing a more progressive and accessible trail system through the creation of a trails master plan and more‌ blazing the way to an improved trail network, all the while making sure that fire safe practices continue at a heightened level. Although focus may shift, placing strong emphasis on progressively developing our trail system, the forestry team will enter into an eight-year cycle devoted to healthy forest, individual lot and common area fire safety examination – endorsed by Cal Safe Fire. All of this in addition to land acquisition and trails. Bravo!

| Tahoe Donner News | July 2011

Sarah Collamer was born for her job Originally from upstate NY, Sarah studied forestry and received her degree from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry with a concentration in recreation. She began her career working in the New York State Park system and then moved to California to work for the US Forest Service in Sierraville. After spending time in timber management and firefighting, Sarah decided to shift gears. “Basically, I realized I did not want to be a logger,” said Sarah. “I decided I wanted to have a positive environmental impact and make a difference.”

“I decided I wanted to have a positive environmental impact and make a difference.” That was five years ago. She has been an important member of the Tahoe Donner Forestry Department ever since. When you speak with her, it is hard not to sense how much she loves her job and how proud she is to be a part of the TD Forestry team. You can tell that this is a woman who has found her calling. Her green eyes light up while describing the forest, like she’s describing her close knit group of friends – Jeffrey Pine, White Fir, Red Fir, Cedar. Friendly and very personable, Sarah has a wealth of knowledge about Tahoe Donner trails. She started on the trails crew doing basic maintenance, clearing brush and deadfall and updating trail signs. She knows the area.

You have been at Tahoe Donner for five years. Tell us a little bit about what you do. This is my dream job. One of the best parts is being a part of the management process. What I do is important to future planning of the trail system at Tahoe Donner. We have great trails here, but they can definitely be improved. Ideally we would like sustainable trails so we won’t have to do the same maintenance work year after year. The idea is to create and improve trails so they can eventually take care of themselves.

What are you currently working on in your new position as the trails steward? Well, we all wear many hats. Right now I am writing the Tahoe Donner Trails Master Plan. I am interviewing stakeholders and researching Master Plans from the Truckee Trails Foundation, the Town of Truckee and Truckee Donner Land Trust. I’m taking a look at their standards and making sure that we incorporate all of the important information in the Tahoe Donner Trails Master Plan. We are orga-

nizing three public comment periods (see pg. 13 for details) and will present the proposed master plan at the end of November. I also consult with homeowners about fire safety and hazardous tree assessment. Our team also works on the common area maintenance including planting small trees and fire safety in areas like the Northwoods Clubhouse and the Tennis Center.

Timing is everything, right? Definitely. Right now it’s a really exciting time to be a part of the Forestry team, especially with the new acquisition of the McGlashan Springs parcel of land. To know that we will be able to look at the 160 acres and have an impact on how the trails are designed for everyone – hikers, bikers and horseback riding - is great. I’m an avid mountain biker and trail user. For me, doing this job is like being a skier who can create their own run at their favorite mountain. Not many people get to do that.

ROBERT CRAY Sad Songs from a Happy Man

TahoeDonner.com |

17

FOR A GUY WHO MAKES HIS LIVING SINGING THE BLUES, ROBERT CRAY SEEMS LIKE A PRETTY CHEERFUL GUY. And for someone just about to turn 59, he looks remarkably like he did a few decades ago. So… is singing the blues some kind of fountain of youth? “It’s therapeutic,” he laughs. “You can sing about the things that ail you. I guess I also got good genes from my parents.” Those parents happened to have a great record collection when Cray was a teenager in Virginia. The Beatles inspired him to start playing the guitar, and pretty soon friends introduced him to blues masters like B.B. King and Buddy Guy. Five Grammy awards later, Robert Cray comes to Tahoe Donner on August 13 as a newly-inducted member of the Blues Hall of Fame. “When you think of all those who’ve been honored there, it’s humbling,” he says with typical modesty. It would be short-sighted to minimize Cray as exclusively a blues artist. His music touches on rhythm and blues, rock, jazz, folk and a

whole stew that can probably be summed up as Americana. “Robert Cray is not only making great music,” says Guitar Player Magazine, “he's making history. With a few exceptions... it used to be that there was the blues and there were the masses and never the twain shall meet. But Cray, who obviously is respected in blues circles, is a press darling and crossover smash.” Indeed, Cray has played alongside both blues titans such as Albert Collins, Muddy Waters, B.B. King and Buddy Guy as well as pop sensations like Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Keith Richards, Chuck Berry and Bonnie Raitt. Cray has been called one of the greatest guitarists of his generation. Let’s put it this way: when Fender offers two signature axes with your name on them, you’re pretty good with a guitar.

“Robert Cray is not only making great music... he’s making history. ”

His tour this summer takes him to a wide variety of venues, ranging from festivals for blues, jazz and folk to the Hollywood Bowl and finally Tahoe Donner. While he’s not sure if he’s ever been in Truckee before, the prospect of playing a driving range doesn’t daunt him. “It sounds like it will be a great venue, he says. “I’m looking forward to it.” Cray says that every show is unique, largely because there is no set list. The band actively encourages the crowd to call out songs they want to hear, and then plays them. Sometimes that means that Cray’s biggest hits like “Smokin’ Gun” and “The Forecast (Calls for Pain)” don’t get played. When the music is great, the crowd doesn’t feel like they’ve missed out by not hearing those songs. “Once we’re on the stage, we’re a unit,” he says. “You’re locked into a zone where your main focus is the song.” After playing for all these years, one of the things keeping it fresh for Cray and his band is listening to a wide variety of music. Hard bop, reggae, Caribbean, soul, gospel and even kids’ music influence them and sometimes show up in a Robert Cray Band show or album. Blues men seem to play well into their golden years. B.B. King, for example, is 85 years old and still has an incredibly busy touring schedule. So how long will Cray keep at it? “As long as it’s fun,” he says. And from the smile on his face when he is performing, we might be blessed with many more years of entertainment from Robert Cray.

TAHOE DONNER INSTRUCTOR RECEIVES NATIONAL LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD One of Tahoe Donner’s ski instructors has been honored with a major award from The Professional Ski Instructors of America – Western Division (PSIA-W). Ernie Gray was this year’s recipient of the Nic Fiore Award, given to “an individual who demonstrates enthusiasm, commitment and a love of winter sports.” The award memorializes a man (Fiore) who is believed to have taught more people to ski than any other person in North America. At 82 and with many years of ski instruction behind him, Gray is no slouch in that department. Gray grew up skiing in Colorado and as a young adult found himself as the director of a ski school at Terry Peak, South Dakota. After accepting another job in San Francisco, he kept his hand in the ski world by forming the Husky Ski Club for junior skiers. He then taught for a couple of years each at Heavenly and Boreal before settling in for 32 years at Alpine Meadows. Eventually he followed Bob Bush to Tahoe Donner, where he has worked for 12 years and founded the Senior Alpine Ski Club. To promote the new club, a mailing was sent to all Tahoe Donner homeowners. “At that first session for the senior program, we had five people,” he remembers. “Now we have 250 people.” Gray is known nationally for

Hurry In! Don’t Miss the Best Prices of the Year!

helping develop the PSIA-W Senior Specialist Accreditation and Senior Education Program. “Ernie is a huge part of the Tahoe Donner Ski School success,” says Robert McClendon, manager of the ski area. “He has helped with training our instructors and helped Tahoe Donner become ‘the best place to begin.’” Gray admits that he’s no longer up for a full day of banging through the moguls and that he doesn’t relate as well to children as he used to. But he is still actively involved with teaching senior skiers, for four hours a day and sometimes more. Maybe your eyes jumped back up the story to double check his age. That’s no misprint. So what’s his secret to staying active for so long? “I’ve been in skiing all my life,” he says. “Right now is my down time and I’m lost. I’m going to ski until I wear out.” Until then, you’ll find Ernie Gray on the slopes at Tahoe Donner, sharing the joy of skiing with one more person.

SPOTLIGHT HOMEOWNER/ TRAIL VOLUNTEER SAY HELLO TO BRUCE

Y

ou’ve heard of him before, perhaps during his tenure on the Board of Directors or out on the trails. This month, we’re featuring Bruce Douglass, our most frequent and enthusiastic trail volunteer.

What is your favorite trail in the area? I thought about this… usually I go up to the Glacier Trail Head and from there I go where the spirit moves me. Sometimes I head to Hawks Peak – which I helped build a few years back because it’s a great trail. Other times I may head up to the Drifter Hut, which I also do during the winter months from the Cross Country Center. It amazes me to see the contrasting views from summer to winter at the Drifter Hut, which looks off to the Pacific Crest with everything in-between.

Do you have a trail tool of choice? The McLeod tool is the best because it has a large headed hoe-like blade on one end and a thin straight blade on the other. It’s versatile and great for trail building.

Where might you find the most dramatic trailside view from within Tahoe Donner? The overlook picnic table that is located at the beginning of the Donner Lake Rim Trail, at intersection 21A, is one of my top picks. If you get out there at the right time you can have it all to yourself. (We couldn’t agree more.)

What makes a good trail crew? The more people the better. Enthusiasm is also a key to success. Everyone takes a part, whether one’s leaning on a shovel, or moving granite in a gung ho way. Most importantly, bring all the enthusiasm you can; it goes a long way.

TAHOE DONNER TRAIL HIGHLIGHTS: • 400 acres of recently purchased open space bordering TD • 35 miles of single track trail/fire roads within TD • Trail connections and gateways to the Donner Lake Rim Trail, Emigrant Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, Hole in the Ground Trail

What trails do you hope to work on this summer? Last summer I took pleasure in helping the Truckee Trails Foundation and the Truckee Donner Land Trust build the Waddle Ranch trail in the Martis Valley. I also helped work on the Donner Lake Rim Trail. This year, I’m not sure, but wherever the trail leads I’ll bring my enthusiasm. Hopefully you’ll join me. Bruce also shared stories of his studies in Hawaii and of reconnecting with a group of friends from 35 years ago from an era in his life spent working abroad. He stated that the internet/email has bridged a gap in communication that now allows many of us to stay connected to individuals who we may have otherwise not.
