MESSAGE FROM THE
GENERAL MANAGER Welcome to Summer at your personal mountain resort! As a member, you and your guests are about to enjoy a complete Tahoe-lifestyle mountain summer as it was originally envisioned when this community was founded in 1971. Our summer started with the annual membership meeting and board of director election, this year with a record breaking 44.2% eligible voter participation turnout! Please join me in welcoming our two new board members, Charles C. Wu and Jim Roth. I’d also like to thank Michael Fajans and Suzy Knisely for volunteering to step in and fill an unexpected director vacancy this past year. Their dedication, professionalism and service to our community is widely recognized and has set the example for others. As you relax this summer in your mountain recreational community, there are a few things you should know about the association: • Tahoe Donner, considered one of the largest common interest communities in the United States, covers over 7,300 acres and is comprised of 6,473 assessed units with approximately 25,000 members. Tahoe Donner is an IRS 501(c)(4) Social Welfare Organization and California NonProfit Mutual Benefit Corporation. • Stay informed about Tahoe Donner summer amenities, activities and events in our weekly activity guides, available at each amenity, at the Member Services office, on tahoedonner.com, and via other communication channels. Sign up for our weekly email blasts (at tahoedonner.com/subscribe) that provide real-time information on events, promotions and important association news. Information can also be found in this issue of Tahoe Donner News that was sent to your primary address.
• Membership cards are now available for digital download, just talk with our Member Services office at Northwoods Clubhouse. • The 2019 annual assessment of $1,965 is comprised of both an operating ($880) and capital ($1,085) component and is adjusted annually to meet requirements approved by the board of directors to operate and maintain the wide variety of amenities available to the community. The operating component of the assessment only funds approximately 29% of the annual operating cost in our user-based amenity system, with 71% funded by users. Users of each amenity, program or activity offered by the association are expected to pay for their use. Some amenities are only open to members and guests, while many are also open to the general public. The combination of these elements is extremely important in keeping the annual operating assessment low by asking individuals to pay for their use of the amenities and selling our excess capacity to the general public to subsidize our year-round fun. Various daily, multi-day and annual access options to our private and public amenities are available in order to provide our large and diverse membership a variety of purchase options. The capital component of the assessment serves several functions and is 100% funded by owners. These include requirements to replace aging facilities and equipment components, purchasing new equipment, and maintaining modern recreational and support service offerings for the entire community. The annual and future projected (Continued on p. 4)

cost of this is distributed evenly across the entire assessed population. Maintaining adequate reserves and saving for future projects, so as not to require special assessments, continues to be an important value of the association. • The primary optional product Tahoe Donner offers to the membership only is the annual Recreation Pass, which is valid from May 1 through April 30 of the following year. For 2019, the cost is $290 and provides unlimited access to our private amenities and is considered an alternative to paying daily entrance fees. Annually, approximately 55% of our owners purchase this project, with the other half choosing to pay daily entrance fees. The Recreation Pass is valid for unlimited annual access to Trout Creek Recreation Center, Beach Club Marina and Tahoe Donner Tennis Center for all membership cards associated with each property. If you do not purchase a Recreation Pass, the cost per entry is $8 per member. Your
guests pay (regardless of your rec pass) a fee of $10 if accompanied by a member or $15 if unaccompanied by a member but with a guest pass. A daily fee will only be required to be paid once per individual per day, allowing access to all private amenities for the day. • Management welcomes feedback at the association and there are several methods to facilitate this. Approach any of our team members, use member feedback screens at select amenities or via our website at tahoedonner.com/likemoji. We are here to help make your experience at Tahoe Donner extraordinary. Please don’t hesitate to give us a call, email us, visit support.tahoedonner.com or stop by our Member Services office, which is open daily from 8AM to 5PM.

Reducing
Wildfire Threat
TAHOE DONNER IS A FIREWISE COMMUNITY® Tahoe Donner Association received the Firewise Community® recognition in 2010 and has retained the distinction annually since then, making it the first eastern Nevada community to do so. In 2017, Tahoe Donner was awarded Firewise Community® of the year. The Tahoe Donner Forestry Department continues to provide educational outreach and physical vegetation management services that enable homeowners to achieve and maintain a Firewise condition around their homes. Wildfire prevention is a way of life for Tahoe Donner homeowners and the area’s healthy forests are an example of the legacy these efforts will leave for generations to come.
FOREST HEALTH + FIRE HAZARD MITIGATION IN TAHOE DONNER Tahoe Donner is dedicated to maintaining a healthy forest within the association while minimizing the threat of forest fires. Of the 7,670 acres within Tahoe Donner, the association owns 5,080 acres while the other 2,622 acres are comprised of private properties, utility properties and public roads. Registered Professional Forester (RPF) Bill Houdyschell and his team are nationally regarded as leaders in their field and manage a variety of land management and fire prevention programs for the association and its property owners. The Tahoe Donner Forestry Department works to create a healthy forest on the common areas of Tahoe Donner. This is done by: • Creating and maintaining fuel reduction zones in strategic areas • Removing brush and planting trees to establish a forest on the landscape • Masticating (mowing) brush from around trees to increase the growth of the forest, changing the arrangement of fuels and removing ladder fuels, which decreases the vertical continuity that allows fire to spread up into tree crowns • Creating a mosaic of practices to lessen visual disruption and encourage the propagation of wildlife species • Thinning dense forest stands through commercial logging operations or by hand crews • Maintaining the seasonal road system in the western portion of Tahoe Donner to lessen erosion and allow access for firefighting crews

FIRE MITIGATION PROGRAMS AVAILABLE TO HOMEOWNERS DEFENSIBLE SPACE INSPECTION PROGRAM
The forestry department helps homeowners bring their properties into compliance with state, local and association fire-safety standards to keep Tahoe Donner safe from wildfires. The programs consists of a 6-inspection cycle, with 1,000 properties being inspected each year.
DEAD TREE PROGRAM
Includes the removal of about 730 trees from association grounds annually
CHIPPING PROGRAM
Includes the removal of over 900 tons of green waste per year.
EXPERT CONSULTATIONS
Consultation on forest health and fire hazard mitigation is available to homeowners. Consultations result in an increase of 1,696 properties inspected per year, in addition to the 1,000 inspected as part of the defensible space program.
LOCAL FIRE PROTECTION Tahoe Donner exists within the Truckee Fire Protection District which is comprised of specialists in various areas of emergency, including structural firefighting, airport rescue firefighting, hazardous materials response and wildland firefighting.
NEW REGULATIONS FOR FIRE HAZARD MITIGATION
Truckee Fire Protection District has recently adopted several new Nevada County ordinances to further fire hazard mitigation in the area including: • Nevada County Ordinance 02-2019 – Defensible Space compliance at the time of property sale transactions • Nevada County Ordinance 03-2019 – Open Burning and Recreational Fire Ban that bans the use of woodburning and charcoal fires and barbeques during high fire season and conditions – NOW IN EFFECT Learn more about the Truckee Fire Protection District at truckeefire.org.

FEATURE JAN ROGERS
BLAZING TRAILS
VOLUNTEERS ARE INTEGRAL IN MAINTAINING TAHOE DONNER'S MOST POPULAR AMENITY By TIFFANY CONNOLLY
Wild, beautiful, rugged and in your backyard, the Tahoe Donner trail system is a portal to the splendor of the High Sierra. From the impressionable to the retired, exploring the great outdoors is an experience to be enjoyed by everyone. But trails don’t appear or remain free from overgrowth on their own. They must be created, maintained and restored. One of the most loved Tahoe Donner Amenities wouldn’t exist without the hard work of the Trails Department and the sweat of dedicated volunteers. The folks who donate their time and energy to the TD trail system maintain trail borders, restore water bars, sweep, reroute, blaze and retire trails, remove vegetation and fill holes. They level-out trails, create switchbacks and rock wall reinforcements and find tune what the Trails Department scratches out. Teams are focused on sustainable practices and meeting trail guidelines for slope and width. It’s hard but rewarding work. The next time you step outside and onto the Tahoe Donner Trail System, give a silent thank-you to your neighbors who spend their days off raking, shoveling and moving rocks for everyone’s enjoyment. These are just a few of the many volunteers who create and maintain Tahoe Donner’s backyard.
Jan Rogers enjoys working on the trails with her two children. An IT professional, she has been a Tahoe Donner homeowner for 14 years and is looking forward to spending her first full year here this coming winter. Along with her two kids, she was integral to the development of the new Teewinot Trail. What Piqued Your Interest in the Trails Club? I was looking for volunteer opportunities for my 14-year-old and learned about the Trails Club through a Google search – it actually came up on Eventbrite. I thought it would be a great thing for the entire family, so my 10 year old got to join in as well. What Has Your Volunteerism Entailed? Trail maintenance and trail blazing! Last year, a new trail [Teewinot] was being installed from Teton heading up to Glacier. We spent time leveling the trail to make it easier on the feet and to ensure it met trail guidelines. We also back-cut into the slope to help with water run-off. The aim was to still have a trail after it rained. The younger kids spent a morning camouflaging a previous trail that wasn’t to be used any longer. Oh, and we swept the trails – mighty good they looked after it too! What is the Best Part About Doing Trail Work? The physical labor and getting dirty – very dirty. Between school and working in the office, our weeks are somewhat sedentary. This volunteer effort is a far cry from our day-to-day lives and its reward is seeing a job well done. Comparing the trail, or lack of trail, from when you walked up to it first thing in the morning to the finished item is so rewarding. There is a huge amount of satisfaction in seeing your efforts make a difference. The TD trails department has a very small staff and a lot of trails to maintain. Without upkeep, nature will win, and we won't have these amazing trails"
TRUE GRIT Access a variety of loops above Alder Creek Adventure Center on this intermediate and flowy trail with a few short, steep sections and optional playful rock features. It’s a fun single-track alternative for access to trails near Sundance Hut and Hawk’s Peak. Length: 1.7 miles Who it's for: Bikers and hikers Starting Point: True Grit starts across from the Moondance hut just before the road drops into the Euer Valley. True Grit ends at the intersection with the Upper Mother Lode trail on the northeast flank of Hawk’s Peak. Do it: For intermediate to advanced trail users, take the trail from Moondance Hut to intersect with Mother Lode. Take Mother Lode down into the Euer Valley to ascend back up to Alder Creek Adventure Center via Cinnamon Twist. For easier rides, take True Grit from the Moondance Hut to intersect with Sundance Connector. Take Sundance Connector to loop back to Alder Creek Adventure Center via Cinnamon Twist.
GUY JOAQUIN
CHURCHILL + SUE GRIMES
JOIN THE TRAILS CLUB
Guy lives in the Bay Area and shares property with his family. His job as a project manager in IT allows him to work remotely and spend most of his summers in Tahoe Donner.
Churchill and Sue have been Tahoe Donner homeowners since 2004. The retired couple visits Truckee mostly in the summer and a few times in the winter. They spent some of their summer days working hard on the Teewinot Trail.
Friends of Tahoe Donner Trails is a chartered club dedicated to advancing the use and enjoyment of Tahoe Donner’s trails and open spaces. All Tahoe Donner members who enjoy the trails, whether on foot, on a bike, or on horseback, are encouraged to join.
What Piqued Your Interest in the Trails Club? I spent a couple of years using the trails on my own. It’s the TD amenity that I use most often. In 2015 I came across a listing of volunteer days in TD News and I thought it would be a great opportunity to meet others who love the trails as much as I do. It was also a way for me to get involved and learn more about my favorite amenity. What Are You Most Proud of? I spent the last two years working on the Teewinot Trail. I’m very proud of it because it was all done by volunteers in conjunction with the TD Trails Department. We built it from scratch, so it was something we could all see the progression of, from start to finish, rather than just maintenance. What is the Best Part About Doing Trail Work? Contributing in a hands-on way. Meeting other TD members, connecting with the community and not feeling like so much of a part-timer. Seeing how all the organizations work together to make Truckee and Lake Tahoe the great place it is. I now have a deep appreciation for the TD trails and beyond. I have learned so much about sustainable and best practices and volunteering has given me a new level of education and understanding of trail systems.
What Piqued Your Interest in the Trails Club? Two years ago, we met some members of the Trails Club during an Invasive Weed Walk and joined the group soon after. We are enthusiastic hikers and liked the idea of working with the club to improve the trails, get some exercise and meet people with similar interests. What is the Best Part About Doing Trail Work? Exercising, socializing with like-minded people, and making a contribution to the trails system. A sense of satisfaction in improving a heavily used TD amenity – it’s the one we appreciate and enjoy the most. We are so impressed by the parents who bring their children with them to work on the trails in an effort to help them develop an appreciation for nature and public service."
Volunteer Trail Work Day Get dirty, give back and feel the satisfaction of a job well done. When: July 20, August 17, September 21 Time: 9AM Location: Varies Invasive Weed Walk with the Weed Warriors Visit a variety of weed infestations across the association, focusing particularly on the noxious weeds you're most likely to find infesting your yards. TEEWINOT Enjoy the southern side of Tahoe Donner on an intermediate to advanced trail through a variety of vegetation and very rocky tread. Marked by steep slopes through old growth trees, Teewinot winds its way to views of Donner Pass. Technical sections of rock provide challenging terrain for more advanced hikers and bikers. Length: 2.3 miles Who it's for: Hikers and bikers Starting Point: Teewinot starts on Skislope Way at the Teton Way Trailhead, just up from the green gate. The trail ends at the picnic area located at the Glacier Way trailhead. Do it: Right now, the trail is best used as an out and back coming from either direction. Once the Donner Lake Rim Trail is completed this summer, there will be improved access to scenic trails on Tahoe Donner’s southern border. TAHOE DONNER NEWS |

TDPUD is also working with Curtis & Sons Construction to install fiber optic cable to various southern and eastern sites in Tahoe Donner. This project includes a small portion of Northwoods between Lamplighter Way and Lausanne Way and requires trenching and a short period of traffic control. MEET THE TAHOE DONNER 4 WHEELERS “ARE YOU SCARED?” INQUIRED BILL RATCLIFF, PRESIDENT OF THE TAHOE DONNER 4 WHEELERS CLUB, AS HE LOOKED AT ME FROM THE DRIVERS SEAT OF HIS LIFTED JEEP. WE REGARDED THE OBSTACLES ON THE STEEP HILL IN FRONT OF US, APTLY NAMED “WINCH #2” AS MANY VEHICLES NEED TO BE PULLED UP AND OVER BOULDERS BY ANOTHER VEHICLE’S WINCH. I HAD TO ADMIT, I WAS A LITTLE NERVOUS, BUT FELT CONFIDENT IN BILL’S SKILLS. “Safety is our #1 priority. We are a little more mellow than other clubs,” Coleen told me before we left Northwoods parking lot on a sunny Monday morning. Coleen Liedholm and her husband Russ were two of the five members of the Tahoe Donner 4 Wheelers Club who agreed to take me out on a run of Bear Valley, along with Bill Ratcliff, Dennis Austin and Don Schellenberg. They all agreed that the best aspect of having a 4 wheelers club is that there is safety in numbers. As we navigated the trail through deep puddles, ruts and boulders, a pattern began to emerge in the conversation I had with each driver. It soon became clear to me that this group is focused on more than just getting their vehicles over obstacles. Everyone I rode with that day put a high emphasis on the various wilderness experiences that the rides bring. There was a LOT of talk about wildflowers. “The reason I wanted to start the club is that I can’t hike anymore, but I love seeing the beauty of the backcountry and the amazing landscapes that I would not be able to access otherwise,” Bill told me as we crested a ridge with views of the deep valley below. History is also a very important facet to their expeditions. They enjoy visiting old mines and frequent places of historical interest. Dennis always does his research before a run so that he can inform the members of a site’s history when they are out in the field. Each vehicle houses its own walkie talkie for communication between drivers. Warnings about tree branches up ahead that may slap a driver in the face and advice on which route to take on a difficult section were the topics on the airwaves. And when the trail mellowed out, jokes and laughter filled the air as they took friendly shots at each other. “We don’t talk politics in our club,” Bill explained. “We have become more than just good friends. We are like family, helping each other out when someone is sick or in the hospital, checking in on one another, and showing respect for each person’s individuality.” “The folks in the club are incredible – I’m not sure how we got so lucky,” Don reflected. “I’ve been with the club for five years and I’ve never heard anyone say anything negative about anyone.”

DOING THEIR PART
JOIN A CLUB
The TD 4 Wheelers Club is heavily involved in the local community. Bill and Don both got misty-eyed when they explained the club’s role in helping handicapped youth access the wilderness at Camp Nejedly. Don illustrated the experience, “These kids are severely disabled. Some can’t talk, and many can’t even walk. This camp allows them to experience the outdoors, something they aren’t normally able to do. The only way to access the camp is by 4 wheel drive. We get them out there and bring them back, and the joy on their faces is indescribable.”
Tahoe Donner clubs bring the community together with common interests. Here are some of the active clubs that were started by Tahoe Donner members. Learn more about them by visiting tahoedonner.com/clubs.
Trail maintenance is also an important aspect of the group’s volunteerism. They work closely with the Forestry Department to maintain and open up various OHV trails in the area. They are also known for initiating rescues for drivers who venture out alone and end up getting stuck. Keeping the landscape pristine is also a high priority for them; they always stick to the trail.

• SENIOR ALPINE SKI CLUB
The club is open to everyone who has 4 wheel drive, beginners included. They always scout the trails before an outing is scheduled and inform members of exactly what to expect and what type of 4 wheel drive vehicle will be successful on a route. Families are welcome – Don’s 8-year-old little girl loves going on runs with the club. And there are plenty of female drivers too, including Coleen with whom I had the pleasure of riding with. In fact, Coleen crushed it on getting up and over “Winch 2” in her Jeep on our Bear Valley run, with advice from the crew and some strategically placed rocks.

THE
BUZZ: CLUBS EQUESTRIAN CLUB
TD 4 WHEELERS CLUB
This summer the Tahoe Donner Equestrian Club is sponsoring two of the Friday night family movies. Bring the kids and join us on July 12 and August 2 at Northwoods Clubhouse for a short horse-themed movie. There will even be a raffle with kid’s prizes! See you there!
We had an exciting run in Nevada last month, visiting the historic Donovan Stamp Mill in Silver City which is being restored by the Comstock Historical Society. We then took on El Dorado Canyon, south of Dayton. El Dorado is a very scenic canyon but us drivers were busy concentrating on getting over boulders in the stream bed and negotiating steep drops and side hills from washouts, which often prevented us from enjoying the scenery.
SENIOR ALPINE SKI CLUB Mother Nature decided she was NOT done with winter. She teased us with a few nice days in April and then reared up her ugly side and brought winter back to Tahoe this May. We did, however, enjoy a handful of club spring skiing days in April at Northstar, Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley, and a few of us diehards even skied powder (chowder?) at Alpine and Squaw in mid to late May. I think we are finally transitioning into summer and can look forward to our summer club activities. Coming up on July 4 we have a club ski day planned at Squaw Valley.
We had 14 vehicles and it was slow going – it took nearly six hours to get through. Carl Hayden took his Toyota Tacoma and demonstrated great driving but still ended up with some exhaust system dents and bumper damage – but he made it through and has good stories to tell. Luckily, he wanted an excuse to get a steel rear bumper and a Reno shop was able to repair the exhaust system inexpensively. The run was definitely more challenging than I remember.
The Tahoe Donner Quilt Club is making lap quilts and pillows for Veterans. There are 60 residents in the Veterans Home, and we plan to have something for everyone and delivered in time for 4th of July. The TD Quilt Club is very active with community projects and we welcome any donations of fabric for the Truckee Healthy babies program in which we create and provide baby quilts, placemats for Meals on wheels and pillows for the Cancer Center. If you have questions please contact Marilyn Dundas at md11792@outlook.com.
WOMEN'S 9-HOLERS GOLF CLUB Welcome summer! Now that golf weather is here we’ve been enjoying social rounds along with weekly club play on Thursdays. Our event directors have some tournaments and clinics in the works for us this summer as well.
On the afternoon/evening of July 5 we have a get together planned at the Tahoe Donner Concert on the Green. Look for our ski club banner, come join our group and meet some great people who love skiing.
TREVOR CLARK
Future summer activities for our club include kayaking on Lake Tahoe, a summer potluck and BBQ in August, and a pickleball/tennis party at our own Tahoe Donner tennis center. Please visit our website at tdski.com for club information and details about upcoming events throughout the year. Contact one of the board members or click on the tab to sign up if you would like to join our club or need more information. We always welcome enthusiastic new members who enjoy downhill skiing and the incredible outdoor activities the Tahoe region has to offer.
Some club members are driving their Jeeps in the Truckee 4th of July parade, so please cheer them on. We’re also attending Concert on the Green on July 6, so stop by to meet club members. Additionally, we have two great runs scheduled in July - Saddleback Fire Lookout on through Poker Flat to La Porte on July 20. On July 27 we’re doing the Pole Creek OHV Trail maintenance day with the Forest Service. Pole Creek is beautiful! Check out td4wheelers.org and join us on any run that fits your interest and experience level.
One of the great things about our club is that it provides opportunities to improve our game at every level while having fun! We have a friendly, supportive group of golfers in the club this year, and as a bonus, we have our TD pros as a resource. WANT TO JOIN THE FUN? If you have questions about our club or would like to learn how the group fits your golf style please contact our president, Shellie Poplin, at shelliepoplin@gmail.com.

IT TAKES A VILLAGE TAHOE DONNER MEMBERS CONTRIBUTE TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY By TIFFANY CONNOLLY
To visit Truckee is to escape from the stresses of city life, traffic and noise. It’s a place to unwind, unplug, and recharge. And behind the scenes exists a community of families, professionals, business owners and labourers who keep Truckee running by cleaning houses and yards, preparing and serving food, and maintaining recreational facilities. Living and working in Truckee has undeniable advantages, but with rising home prices and low wages, some members of the community struggle to stay afloat. Tahoe Donner homeowners and philanthropists took notice of this and founded The Giving Fund as a way of alleviating some of the financial burden local non-profits and individuals shoulder.
GIVING BACK “The Giving Fund is a way for Tahoe Donner residents to pool their resources in order to be part of the local community and not just ‘those people on the hill,’” explained Suzanne Sullivan, Giving Fund founding member and chair. “It’s a way of saying thank you to the people who create and maintain the Truckee region and environment that we all love.” By securing donations from Tahoe Donner members, the Giving Fund is able to provide significant scholarships for deserving students as well as grants for local non-profits in the areas of education, the environment, human services, and arts and culture. “It means giving back. The local students and the effect that our giving has on the community is what drives me. It’s tedious work, but when I read the scholarship applications and read these kids’ stories and see the need, I just can’t turn my back on that. It’s the opportunity to change a life and improve a situation,” says Barbara Ramsey, Giving Fund Committee Member. For some scholarship recipients, the gift sets the course for educational and career opportunities that wouldn’t be obtainable otherwise.
PHILANTHROPY FOR SCHOLARS Arturo Colmenares, a recent graduate of Truckee High School is one of the most recent recipients of The Giving Fund’s Impact Scholarship, a 4- to 5-year award of up to $10,000 per year. He reflects on his freshman year, “I was being raised in an extremely unhealthy environment. My teacher realized that I was smart but not able to complete my work because of the way things were at home. She stepped in and decided to help. I was able to turn my life around from being the bad kid to being a focused student,” explained Arturo.
Together, Arturo and his teacher filed for a change in guardianship that allowed him to move out of his unsupportive home. Arturo thrived from then on. In his senior year, upon learning that he was accepted to the University of Reno, Nevada, he began applying for financial aid and scholarships. “I’ve worked at The Boys & Girls club for three years, and I love working with kids. I want to keep doing that for the rest of my life.” With the scholarship money that Arturo received through The Giving Fund’s generous donors, he plans to become a teacher and hopes to serve children in need. And there are plenty of families in Truckee that are in need. “Following a school break like ski/skate week or spring break, there are some kids who take really amazing trips. However, there are a number of kids who are not going on vacation. They are staying at home alone and unsupervised because their parents, who can’t afford daycare, are working in the service industry, cleaning homes or working multiple jobs,” explained Diane Welch, a Truckee teacher and Tahoe Donner homeowner.
COMMUNITY IMPACT It’s not only students that benefit from the philanthropy of Giving Fund donors. Since 2015, The Giving Fund has given out over $89,000 in grants to community programs. Some of the recipients of these grants include The Boys and Girls Club, Sierra Senior Services, Arts for the Schools, Truckee Community Theatre, Sugar Pine Foundation, the Family Resource Center, Truckee Donner Land Trust, Tahoe-Pyramid Trail, Give Back Tahoe, and many, many more. “The Giving Fund has done so much great work, but there is so much more we can do. Awareness is a key issue. Second homeowners buy in our amazing Sierras to have a place to rest and recreate. We honor that but want our TD neighbors to also be aware of the needs within Truckee, of the people that make it possible for them to enjoy their homes here. We hope greater awareness will result in more contributions. If every homeowner gave just $100, think of what we could accomplish in the community,” reminds Suzanne.

MARTIS WILDLIFE AREA
WE CAN'T AFFORD TO LET IT GO Submitted by THE TRUCKEE RIVER WATERSHED COUNCIL
The Truckee River Watershed Council is excited to tell you about a big habitat effort happening in Truckee. It’s called the Martis Wildlife Area Restoration Project.
the meadow’s ability to perform its natural hydrological function. Which is exactly why the time is now – this summer – for a major restoration project.
As many know, this beautiful span of alpine meadow is one of the most treasured spots in the Sierra. What many don’t know is that this beloved spot is gravely endangered. Streams are drying up, banks are rapidly eroding, and habitats are being threatened.
The need to protect the meadow dovetails perfectly with a statewide push to manage water in California. This large-scale effort is set to restore:
What healthy meadows do: • • • •
store and filter drinking water prevent run-off and erosion mitigate drought, fire and flooding provide habitats for wildlife
Martis Creek Wildlife Area could be a perfect example of the ideal meadow; unfortunately, it’s not. The meadow is starting to do what deserts do (repel water) instead of what meadows do (hold water).
BALANCE HYDROLOGICS
Decades of misuse from mining, grazing, logging and development has degraded
• • • •
70 acres of wet meadow 2 miles of streams habitats for fish, birds and mammals revegetation of native wetland and riparian species
Accomplishing all this will take most of the summer and patient cooperation from area locals, like yourself. Look for big yellow earthmovers in the meadow and please respect signage regarding trail usage and parking. Over the next few years, the meadow will emerge wetter, wilder and greener, as we create a more sustainable future for generations to come.
Please join us in protecting this precious resource. We can’t afford to let it go. For more information visit truckeeriverwc.org, meadowsforever.org or email aholmes@truckeeriverwc.org.
WHERE TO GET YOUR MEADOW FIX WHILE THE MEADOW IS BEING FIXED Many favorite spots on the Tomkins Memorial Trail (TMT) surrounding the meadow will still be accessible. Consider revisiting former favorites or discovering new trails throughout the breathtakingly beautiful Truckee/Tahoe area. For information about trail access and parking visit: northstarcsd.org/tompkins-memorial-trail Please remember to respect all signage, trail closings and rules for pets. It’s all for the good of our meadow.
It takes a dedicated team to do what we do. Thank you to our partners, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Northstar California Resort and the Northstar Community Services District. Thank you to the funders who are making this work possible – donors to the Truckee River Watershed Council, Bella Vista Foundation, California Department of Fish and Wildlife via Prop 1, The Martis Fund and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.

California has seen 9 of the 20 most destructive fires in California’s history, just in the last 5 years. If this happens on a windy day, it can be devastating to our community.
