PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE SUZY KNISLEY | PRESIDENT Book your golf tee times early. This is going to be a great summer golf season and an early start to be out enjoying our gorgeous golf course. For all of you driving up for the weekend, to get the best tee times, remember to book 14 days in advance with the pro shop. For great savings, estimate your planned rounds of golf and purchase the most appropriate pass to meet your needs. There are a lot of activities packed into this summer at Tahoe Donner; at the Marina, at Northwoods Clubhouse, summer barbeques at the Equestrian Center, summer camping programs, swim programs at Trout Creek, a July 21 outdoor concert, and many other special events, so pick up your Summer Fun Guide or check the website for dates and times. The board has been busy reviewing many current projects in the initial design stage, the biggest one being the concept and scope of the Cross Country Ski Lodge. We are looking to stay within a realistic budget and meet the needs of space allocation for the various planned activities, with the great assistance of the General Plan Committee and staff. The board recently walked the area at the Beach Club Marina and viewed initial drawings and demonstration of a greatly needed beach and picnic space expansion to meet the strong summer demand. Staff already has some modifications planned to enhance your beach and waterfront activities this summer. By the time you receive this issue of the Tahoe Donner News, the board will have reviewed plans for improvements of the Grotto at The Lodge. Summer is also the season to keep fire prevention in mind. Early summer yard clean up of downed tree limbs and cutting back any heavy foliage within the new 100-foot space requirement from your home is an important prevention measure. Truckee has a special yard waste promotion the first part of June for free dumping to encourage your participation. June 24 is our Annual Member Meeting and
summer barbeque free to all members at the Northwoods Clubhouse. Representatives at various Tahoe Donner club organizations will have information available and the announcement will be made as to whom you elected to your Board of Directors. It’s great fun for the whole family, so please join us as we celebrate the beginning of summer and provide an opportunity to meet and share your ideas with staff and your Board of Directors. For all of you that don’t already know, I raise specialty breed chickens and 26 one-day old baby chickens are due to arrive by U.S. mail in June to fill up my newly constructed, show stopping chicken coop, and will be keeping me busy this summer. In addition to being president of Tahoe Donner, I am president of the Loomis Chicken Lovers Association. This has been a very productive year for Tahoe Donner, and I congratulate everyone for their tremendous contributions and effort towards making the many improvements and additions to Tahoe Donner. Especially to all the committee members for their tremendous contribution of time, planning and ideas, to my fellow board members - Tom, Jay, Ron and Steve - for their support throughout this year, to our staff for their outstanding effort towards continuous improvements and creative contributions, to our members for their feedback, and especially to Robb Etnyre, our superlative general manager for his outstanding leadership and the many successful efforts and improvements made in and around Tahoe Donner. Our biggest success under his guidance, and on all our parts being the purchase of the Euer Valley, a goal the association has had for many years and I have strongly supported coming to fruition. Thank you, Robb. Thank you all.

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER’S DESK
I’m not quite certain where to start this month, as there are so many great things happening in our active mountain community. Coming off a mild winter, the routine local conversation is all about what a fantastic summer we’re going to have this year. So, in preparation for this, we have spent quite a lot of time this winter and spring reviewing member feedback from last year’s summer seasonal survey along with proposed new or enhanced programs, events, and services. We’ve taken this feedback and prioritized immediate items that can be improved upon in order to deliver a great experience for all our members this summer. You’ll find selected highlights of these improvements in the article by our director of operations, Miguel Sloane, on page 8 of this edition of Tahoe Donner News. Of course, you don’t have to just read about these improvements; you can experi-
ence them firsthand, along with all the fun in store for you at your personal resort this summer. Just pull out your Summer Fun Guide and plan your activities. June will host a number of terrific events and activities right in your own backyard. The month starts off with our annual Truckee Day neighborhood clean-up (June 2) and ends with an enormous Waterpalooza event for kids (young and old) on the driving range. With that as a sampling of June, just imagine all the outstanding activities throughout the remainder of the month - equestrian BBQ, paddle boarding, historic kayak tour, bocce ball, burgers and bratwurst tennis bash, camps, hiking, recreation programs, swimming, bingo night at Pizza on the Hill, the annual meeting and some of the best golf in the region at your own championship course – it’s like your own private resort! In working with our staff, board of directors, and volunteer committees, I’m reminded of the countless hours and energy your fellow members selflessly volunteer to make Tahoe Donner a great mountain community we can all enjoy. Tahoe Donner is privileged to have a committed and engaged five member volunteer board of directors guiding the strategic affairs of the association. We also have five principal volunteer committees - Architectural Standards, Finance, General Plan, Covenants, and the Elections Committee - collectively comprising over 35 key volunteers. The senior management staff and I continually turn to these committees as the backbone of our association in discussing and planning the future of our community to best benefit our 6,500 owners and 25,000 members. Chartered clubs are also critical components of our volunteer membership, representing almost 1,000 members and helping to organize and galvanize common interest and participation within our community. I look forward to developing more in-depth coordination plans to provide even more opportunities for volunteers to engage in activities such as trail development for the benefit of the community. If you have volunteer ideas, please let me know. This leads me to an update on our year-to-date April financial results, before assessed revenue. Following a very mild winter result-

ing in below budgeted expectations, the association’s net operating result is (-$390,000) off budget 2012 – a dramatic improvement to our position in January of this year. This loss continues to improve each week and month as your employee team, at every level, makes small adjustments across the entire organization in an effort to erode this current loss to budget in order to keep the annual operating cost of the association under control while still delivering excellent customer experiences across all of our operations. Additionally, I want to again recognize the outstanding contributions of our winter staff, who delivered truly exceptional customer service and products over the course of one of our most challenging winters in quite a long time. Awesome things are happening (check out Pizza on the Hill’s new game room) and more are in the works (cell tower), as we continue our commitment to the enhancement of this vibrant mountain community. Best wishes,

2012 BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION DON’T FORGET TO VOTE! If you haven’t already, you will shortly be receiving election materials for this year’s Board of Directors election. One 3-year term is being filled, with two property owners running for this position. The election materials will include each Candidate’s Statement. These statements are the sole work of their authors (the association has not edited them in any way), and their purpose is to give our voting members some insight into the perspectives of the individual candidates. In addition, there will be an opportunity on June 9 to listen to each candidate as they present their views and positions for the future of Tahoe Donner. Please read the election materials carefully. If something is confusing, or you have questions, please let us know—we’re here to help. Over the years, California law has made association elections even more technical, and our director election materials require specific and detailed procedures. The process involves sealing your ballot
in one envelope, which is then sealed in another envelope, which then must bear specific information about the voter including their signature. If the steps are not followed exactly, according to California law, the ballot is disqualified.
Please vote in these elections as there is a required level of membership participation, and if not reached — the will of the membership will not be gained, and the election will have been a waste of effort and money. Questions? Contact Bonnie Watkins at (530) 587-9431.

SUMMER OPERATIONS Here comes the sun! With a challenging winter behind us, it is time to look forward to the upcoming summer season. Staff has been working long and hard to get our summer operations up and running for our membership’s pleasure. We are looking forward to a summer of exciting activities and adventures. Last fall, we administered a Summer Operations Survey to solicit feedback from the membership about the season just passed. I am happy to report that we received more than 890 responses to that survey. As is usually the case, the feedback was very helpful and covered the full gamut of topics. In an effort to close the loop on the feedback received, we would like to highlight some of the operational changes for this upcoming summer as a result of your feedback:
Tennis: • We have a comprehensive improvement to our practice court planned for this season to go along with the cosmetic improvements completed last summer. This improvement includes the construction of a new Quick Start court that will be used for our junior programs. • With the support of the Tennis Club, director of tennis Ian Mindell has planned a very busy social calendar with several competitive and non-competitive events scheduled throughout the summer.

• We have more horses available for trail rides, with rides going into the newly acquired Euer Valley property.
Marina:
• We have added a few additional healthier items to the Marina Grill menu this summer, including daily specials. • Beer and a few select specialty adult beverages are available. • A few more tables have been added to the beach and screening has been added to the fence along Donner Pass Road to enhance the separation of our property from vehicle traffic. • The dock and swim line configuration has changed to provide more separation of swimmers and boaters, and we will be adding a few new toys to the swim area. • The large BBQ’s on the beach have been overhauled and the grilling surfaces have been replaced. • In the fall, we are planning a renovation to the deck and lawn area to provide more seating for the snack bar and assist with foot traffic and boat traffic separation.
Trout Creek/Pools/Recreation:
• While we will still enforce a potty break at the top of every hour for the recreation pool, we have shortened the required break time. • Lap pool deck during peak periods to enforce the behavior rules. • We have developed a lap swim sticker program to be sure kids using the lap pool have completed a qualifying exam which will test their skills and teach them lap swim etiquette. • We will post a lifeguard on the lap pool deck during peak periods to enforce the behavior rules.
• More umbrellas will be added to the pool deck to provide more shade opportunities for our guests. • We are working with vendors for a solution to the request for better towels at the facility and will have better towel options in place. • We will add new magazines to the cardio room including Outside and Sports Illustrated. • We have added an additional bocce court for this summer season behind Northwoods Clubhouse. • Pizza on the Hill will offer a lunch menu from the BBQ for Northwoods Pool and playground area throughout the summer. • The game room in Pizza on the Hill has been renovated to include more interactive activities for the kids. • We have enhanced the horseshoe pits at Northwoods Clubhouse and added croquet to the activities available for checkout from the Recreation Hut at Northwoods Pool. • Bikeworks has been relocated to the Equestrian Center with a small selection of bikes still available at the Beach Club Marina.
As you can see, we have many improvements for this upcoming season, so be sure to spend the majority of your summer in Tahoe Donner and take advantage of everything we have to offer. See you at the beach!

Maureen Alan-Ludwig loves Tahoe Donner. In 1991, Maureen started renting ski leases, and ended up building her first home in Tahoe Donner in 1995. After becoming a homeowner, Maureen started coming up to her second home to spend more time in the area and explore activities like skiing in the winter and mountain biking and hiking in the summer. Maureen moved up to Tahoe Donner to live fulltime in 2011. Maureen started golfing five years ago and says it’s one of her favorite things to do in Tahoe Donner, followed by lunch on the deck at The Lodge Restaurant and Pub. She also enjoys hiking, mountain biking, picnics at the Beach Club Marina and summer concerts at the driving range. “Each season at Tahoe Donner offers something that fits well with my lifestyle and the things I enjoy doing,” Maureen says. “I enjoy spending active time outdoors and the mountains offer so many opportunities to do so!”

Dory the loveable – albeit forgetful – sidekick in the movie “Finding Nemo” offered this simple, yet profound advice to her friend, Marlin. “Hey Mr. Grumpy Gills, when life gets you down do you wanna know what you gotta do?” Dory tells her fearful pal. “Just keep swimming. ahoe Donner homeowner Julie Halvorsen, a mother of five children -- ranging in age from 3 months to 14 years -- couldn’t agree more with Dory’s plain-spoken ethos. “For our family, swimming is something we do literally every day during the summer months,” Halvorsen explains. “We enjoy the Tahoe Donner pools and lakes around the area from the first barely warm day until it turns cold again.”
“We enjoy the Tahoe Donner pools... from the first barely warm day until it turns cold again.” Indeed, swimming is a way of life at Tahoe Donner. Swimming’s fun factor is enticing to active families, but keeping the kids safe is paramount for Halvorsen and a host of other parents. Luckily for them, Tahoe Donner offers a roster of swim lessons designed to accommodate all ages - starting at 6 months old all the way up to adults.

JUST ADD WATER
TAHOE DONNER POOL CULTURE:
Ask any Tahoe Donner resident: The pools are the catalysts of summer activity here -- be it a children’s swim class, an Aquatic Zumba session or just some splashing around to blow off steam on a warm day. Both the Trout Creek Recreation Pool and the Northwood Pool have certified lifeguards on duty.
Trout Creek Recreation Center | 12790 Northwoods Blvd. Details: Tahoe Donner’s main pool is located at Trout Creek Recreation Center. It has a capacity of 220 people and includes six lap lanes and a basketball hoop area. The depth ranges from two feet to five feet deep. For wee swimmers, there’s a small one-foot deep pool, right next to the rec pool. The designated lap pool has three lap lanes at a four-foot depth. “Trout Creek is one of the gems of being a member of Tahoe Donner,” adds Amanda Birchenough, Tahoe Donner Marketing Communications Manager. * New! Wibit Night and Float Your Boat | Fridays from 5 – 7 p.m. Check out the new obstacle course and bring your floating pool toys. Sorry, no hard sided flotation devices are allowed. Season: Saturday, May 26- Sunday, Sept. 30 Hours: Monday – Thursday, 11:30 a.m. – 7 p.m. Friday – Sunday, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Marlon Cavassin, Tahoe Donner aquatics coordinator, is a guy who loves everything swimming. Not surprisingly, he thinks learning to swim is an important life lesson. “Many animals are born with the ability to swim,” Cavassin explains. “Humans need to be taught by someone. Some people go their whole lives without ever learning how to swim, causing them to fear water.” “We offer private and group lessons that can cover a wide range of abilities from basics, such as getting comfortable in the water, to advanced and competitive swimming skills,” says Cavassin. Cavassin advises parents to get their children in swim classes as early as possible, as it’s easier to learn at a young age. Still, he’s quick to note that you are never too old to learn this skill that is easy on the joints and great for the heart.
NORTHWOODS POOL | 11509 NORTHWOODS BLVD. Details: Located next to the clubhouse, the Northwoods Pool features a slide at the deep end (eight foot depth) and a shallow area for toddlers. Capacity of this pool is 55 people. CHECK THESE OUT!
NEED MORE REASONS TO LEARN TO SWIM?
1. Personal Safety: The number one reason to learn how to swim is survival. Chances are good that at some time or another, you’ll be near water -- be it a cruise, fishing on a dock or lounging by a pool. If you don’t know how to swim, an unintended slip into a body of water that is deeper than your height could prove fatal. 2. Rescuing Others: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 3,400 people drown in the United States every year. If you know how to swim, you might have a chance of saving someone. 3. Health: Great for building strength, endurance … you name it, swimming’s got it. What’s more, water provides natural resistance when you are swimming, plus it makes it less strenuous on the body. 4. Pleasure: Put simply, swimming feels good! Plus it’s a great way to hang with your friends and family.
Swim Class 101 Want to make your child’s watery adventure the best ever? Here are some great tips from trusted Tahoe Donner parents and instructors.
1. Try to schedule your kids’ lessons at a time that works best for them, i.e. the time of day when their cranky-tired-hungry meter is dialed way down. 2. In the weeks leading up to and after the lessons, start swimming so they can see swimming as a way of life. “If they get to swim with their parents outside of lessons, they will see it as a fun family activity,” says Halvorsen. “They’ll want to improve and be able to swim with their older siblings and/or parents.” 3. Stay dry before the lesson and wear a thermal suit. “Kids get cold fast!” Cavassin reminds parents. 4. Want to get everyone in the mood? Don’t miss Free Swim Class Demo Day on Thursday, June 14, from 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. at the Trout Creek Recreation Center. To make reservations, call (530) 582-9627. 5. Once you’ve signed up, attend a free parent swim lesson orientation on Sunday, June 17, 7 p.m. at the Trout Creek Recreation Center. You’ll get to talk with instructors and learn some fun and useful tools to prep your child for swim class.
Swim Lesson Information For specific swim class info, visit tahoedonner.com. Lessons are available for adults and children – offered in private, semi-private and group formats. Lifeguard training and certification courses are also available, but generally fill up quickly.

Waterpalooza Celebrating its second year at Tahoe Donner, Waterpalooza is the brainchild of Tahoe Donner Recreation Coordinator Mariah McCloskey. Held at the driving range, Waterpalooza has been expanded to a two-day event this year: June 30 and July 1 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The game area features duckies, squirt guns and pirate ships. And additional water fun includes dunk tanks, water balloons, slip ‘n slides, water slides, and more. “I think kids enjoyed this so much last year because there aren’t any water parks up here,” explains McCloskey. “Kids and adults loved that they got to dunk the lifeguards and other Tahoe Donner employees. I think the parents liked it because it was a controlled area for their kids to run around and have some classic summer backyard fun.” This family friendly event has got it all, including live music, carnival snacks, barbeque, and non-alcoholic beverages. The event is $15 for participating kids and includes five food tickets.

Dive-in Movies A watery riff on the gone-but-not-forgotten drive-in movies of yesteryear. Kids splash around and float on inner tubes at the rec pool, while parents chill on the deck in lounge chairs. What’s not to love? “It’s a drive-in movie feel, but you’re in the swimming pool,” McCloskey explains. “The parents enjoyed it, as well, because there is a gorgeous backdrop: the sunset and woods.” Details: Event is free to members and guests with entrance into Trout Creek. Inner tubes and flotation toys are available to rent for $5 each. Movies start about 8 p.m. when the sun sets. July 28 | Lilo and Stitch August 11 | Shark Tale

WRITTEN BY ANN LINDEMANN
The Healthy Water Campaign No one likes it, but here in Aquatics we have to deal with it: pool contaminations. Last summer, we hosted many members and their guests in our pools. During that time, we had to evacuate pools and spas more times than we wished for, due to water contamination. So it is no surprise that these accidents were leaving many patrons angry and disgusted. To prevent and stop these inconvenient accidents, we have implemented potty breaks, which will be happening hourly on the hour for 10 minutes daily. Lifeguards will signal at the beginning and end of these break periods. Staff is asking for your help in seeing that your children make use of this time to use the restroom. An accident in a pool or spa requires that the facility affected be closed for up to a 24-hour period in order to remove water borne pathogens. Pathogens can cause illnesses that can affect the skin, eyes, ears, respiratory, neurologic and gastrointestinal systems. Waterborne pathogens found in fecal matter can potentially cause serious and life-threatening consequences when not treated correctly. Tahoe Donner follows CDC recommendations on our containment procedures for these incidents. Incidents cause a huge inconvenience for everyone wishing to use the facility and also contribute to a loss of revenue for the association. Please be considerate of everyone’s desire to use the pools; have your young swimmers use the restroom each break to prevent accidents. We also require non-potty trained infants to wear a swim diaper or pool diaper. We sell them at the Northwoods Recreation Hut and Trout Creek front desk. A swim diaper is made for infants and toddlers to be worn underneath a bathing suit. Swim diapers serve the purpose of protecting both the bathing suit and the pool water from the child’s excrement. Regular diapers are not allowed in our pools, because they are designed to absorb liquid water and tend to disintegrate in pools. Also, the large amount of water absorbed by those diapers weighs the child down and causes a safety risk. With your help, we hope to prevent these unpleasant situations and keep our pools healthy and open so you and your family can make the best of summer with us at Tahoe Donner.

TAHOE DONNER FACILITIES ABOUT TO GET SOME LOVE
Wayfinding Signs | Select wayfinding signs are to be installed by the end of June, with the remaining signs being installed throughout the summer and fall.
It’s go time. After much planning and discussion regarding Tahoe Donner’s facility needs, a number of projects are kicking off this construction season – and a few more are right around the corner. Here’s a taste:
New Forestry Facility Remodel | Plans have been submitted to the county for review and approval, with interior renovations planned for this summer.
Northwoods Clubhouse | A new bocce ball court is being added for play in June.
Maintenance Facility Remodel | Construction is planned for fall/ winter 2012.
Beach Club Marina Upper and Lower Lawn Improvement A schematic master plan is being prepared for the board of directors. Upon approvals and an amendment to the use permit, construction will proceed this fall.
Trail to Downtown | At the April board of directors meeting, the board approved recommending the use of TSSA-1 funds on the construction of a class 1 trail from Northwoods Boulevard (near the Tahoe Donner entrance, by the power lines) to the intersection with Euer Valley Road south. If approved by the Truckee Town Council, the project may begin construction in 2013. The long-term vision for this trail is to connect Tahoe Donner with Bridge Street in downtown Truckee.
The Lodge Restaurant and Pub | The use permit is being reviewed to allow for additional bar service in the Grotto area. The deck enclosure and expansion is in design. Upon necessary approvals, construction will commence this fall. Downhill Ski Area | Upon necessary approvals, a yurt is planned for the downhill ski area to support growing ski school activities.
Cross Country Ski Lodge | The scope and budget for this new building are being refined by the board of directors and General Plan Committee, with formal design proceedings planned for this summer.
Downhill Ski Area Parking Lot Expansion | The Town of Truckee is in final review, and upon approval construction will commence this summer.

Tahoe Donner Men’s Golf Club The TD Cup Tournament was a great success on a remarkable golf course. The last weekend in April, the top finishing players for The Men’s Golf Club – 16 of us - traveled to Sonoma Golf Club for a two day tournament. Played in a slightly twisted rendition of the Walker Cup format, we were formed into two teams competing for our own version of golf supremacy. Mike Ginsberg led his team to smashing success against Ralph Schindler and his crew. In fact, after the first day, observers were not sure if Ralph’s team even showed up; but by the end of the two days, they made an appearance, and scores were a little more competitive. We were rewarded with spectacular weather.

As a reminder to our club members, every time you play in a tournament this summer you will be awarded TD Cup points, plus you receive additional points for finishing in the top five. As a reward to our top players, the club then sponsors a tournament to our top-finishing players. We hope you do well this summer, and look forward to your participation. We have scheduled our first club tournament of the new season, The Ice Breaker, for June 3. We shouldn’t have any ice to break this season, but we will certainly have a warm reception for you. If you are new to Tahoe Donner Men’s Golf Club, please sign up as this will be your first introduction to our club. We intend to make you feel welcome and comfortable with your new friends. Our second event of the season is Friday, June 8. The NCGA Senior Four-Ball Net Championship Qualifier has an 8 a.m. shotgun start. FORMAT: Four-ball (two-person better ball) with best ball of a two man team. Players must have reached 55th birthday by 9/15/2012. Players with indexes above 18.4 will play as an 18.4. Partner’s course handicaps can’t differ by more than 8 strokes.
On Saturday, June 23, we have the NCGA Four-Ball Net Championship Qualifier with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. FORMAT: Four-ball stroke play (two-person better ball) with best ball of a two man team. Play will be 90 percent of the course handicap using a maximum index of 18.4. Players with indexes above 18.4 will play as an 18.4. If partners’ handicaps differ by more than 8 strokes, an additional 10 percent reduction will be applied to course handicaps. We hope you can join us for these events. Entry forms can be found at tdgolfclub.com or on the bulletin board outside the pro shop. The Men’s Golf Club Board has decided to assign club members to separate holes to maintain each time they play. We will announce which hole is your responsibility for this extra care. We intend that each hole will have about 15 men who will fill the divots and repair the green marks each time they play. Please remember this as you play.
Tahoe Donner Junior Golf Club Attention all Junior Golfers: The Tahoe Donner Junior Golf Club will be starting up for the summer on Thursday, June 21. The Club is open to all juniors, ages 17 and under who have had some on-the-course experience and who have a basic understanding of the rules and etiquette of golf. We meet every Thursday afternoon for clinics, games and a 9 hole round of golf. Activities begin at 2 p.m. with tee times starting at 3 p.m. For more information, please contact Jean Lai at jslai@comcast.net. Look for our newsletter and application in the pro shop in early June if you are new to the program. Members from last year will receive the newsletter via e-mail. Be sure to put Thursday, August 1, on your calendar for the annual TD Junior Golf Tournament. See you then!

r e m m u S o t Swing in WE PULLED IT OFF AGAIN! Thanks to golf course superintendent Kevin Kuehne and his dedicated, hard-working crew, we opened the course on time, which when factoring in the challenges of the past two years, was a minor miracle in itself. To put things in perspective, we opened the course more than four weeks earlier than in 2011, and two weeks earlier than in 2010. I am pleased to announce that the golf course is recovering nicely from the ravages of winter, with conditions improving daily, and that we expect excellent course conditions by the end of the month, much earlier than the past few years. To get you tuned up and excited about your games and our wonderful golf course we encourage you to check out our daily golf clinics, which are posted on tahoedonner.com.

Reminder: Now that spring is here and the snow is gone or melting around your property, please remove your snow protection devices (plywood covering windows, etc.). Before storing them for the summer, please take the time to put a coat of paint or stain on them to keep them looking consistent with the rest of your house when you put them up next year.
